COUNCIL

Thapar calls for Sjostrom’s resignation AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After hearing of departing city manager John Stecyk’s severance package of more than $170,000, Coun. Sushil Thapar is asking for Mayor Mary Sjostrom’s resignation. “If that’s the way she’s mismanaging the city, she should step down, he said. After last week’s press release, stating city manager John Stecyk was “resigning, Thapar questioned the release calling it “misleading and false. He then filed a Freedom of Information request surrounding any severance Stecyk was receiving upon departure. “If there are financial implications, the public should know, he said. This Monday, at an in-camera (private) meeting, city councillors Ed Coleman, Laurey-Anne Roodenburg, Scott Elliott, John Brisco and acting mayor Mike Cave (Mayor Mary Sjostrom is away in China) passed a motion of censure. It states: “WHEREAS members of council have a legal duty to maintain confidentiality; AND WHEREAS improper disclosure of confidential information, particularly involving personal information, may expose the City to liability; AND WHEREAS Councillor Thapar has disclosed to the media confidential information in clear breach of confidentiality rules and a specific agreement; NOW THEREFORE COUNCIL censures Councilor Thapar for his failure to comply with the Community Charter with respect to

rules of confidentiality related to closed Council meeting matters. The release says the motion is based on “improper disclosure by Coun. Sushil Thapar. It then cites several sections of the Community Charter that “were of concern, most notably: Section 90, which outlines what issues municipalities may or must discuss in-camera, issues mostly related to labour, land or legal. Thapar is fighting censure, stating he did nothing to violate his oath. “All I did was ask a question, he said. “Taxpayers deserved to know how much this was costing them. I did not disclose any information, I asked questions. Thapar says city council is making decisions in-camera, decisions that are costing taxpayers money. “And they don’t want people to know about it, he added. Thapar also pointed to the recruitment of a fourth city manager during Sjostrom’s reign as mayor. “Her mismanagement is costing the taxpayers money, he said. “All I’m doing is being honest. Thapar said if the severance package figure would have been available from the beginning, he would not have had to file an FOI. “I just wanted the truth, he said. “I’m not the liability here, she [Sjostrom] is. Her actions are costing taxpayers money, not mine. Thapar says the next step is to call a public meeting. No date has yet been set. Stecyk’s final remuneration payment from the city was $170,469.13; he was hired Jan. 4, 2011.

Quesnel man sustains minor injuries in collision A Quesnel man is lucky to be alive after a three-vehicle collision claimed two lives. The collision occurred on Highway 1 just North of Spences Bridge, when a commercial “B train” tractor unit overturned and slid into the oncoming lane. Around 11:30 a.m. May 7, the Ashcroft RCMP, along with fire and ambulance services, attended to the collision at the Kingsway corner area of Hwy 1, between Spences Bridge and Ashcroft. Traffic investigators and the local fire department closed the highway until approximately 7:30 p.m,, as a result. Initial findings indicate a southbound “Super B” commercial truck loaded with hay lost control in a moderate curve, tipped onto its side and slid across the centerline. The cargo and trailers

severely impacted two northbound passenger vehicles, pushing them into the roadside concrete no post barrier. A “B train” tractor unit refers to a truck pulling two trailers in tandem. The driver of the 1997 Blue Peterbilt truck is a 30-yearold man from Quesnel, who sustained only minor injuries to his knee. The first northbound vehicle struck was driven by 31-yearold Clifton Noiles, from Delta. Noiles was the sole occupant in his gray 2005 GMC Jimmy SUV and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second vehicle impacted, a brown 2003 Chevrolet Impala was driven by 53-yearold male Glen Joynt of Terrace. Joynt was also pronounced deceased at the scene. Joynt was travelling with his two

teenage sons ages 14 and 18-years-old, who sustained minor injuries. The boys were able to extricate themselves prior to their vehicle being engulfed in the fire however were unable to remove their father, who lay unconscious and trapped in the vehicle. BC Air Ambulance attended and air lifted the injured parties. Weather and road conditions at the time of the crash were reported to be dry and warm with partially cloudy skies. Driver action and speed are suspected to be possible causal factors in the collision. The RCMP Central Interior Traffic Services and BC Coroners Services are continuing their investigations and are awaiting the completion of the mechanical inspection report for the tractor unit.

Drugs trends and exploitation RCMP are hosting a presentation about drug trends and exploitation. The event, hosted by School District 28, takes place May 17, 6:30 p.m. at Correlieu

Secondary. The presentation is aimed at parents, teenage youth and any concerned community members interested in learning more about local drug trends, the

impact drugs have on our community and what the public can do to help police eradicate drug activity from their neighbourhoods. The presentation is free.

Work has begun on the hazardous materials abatement of Baker Lodge. Baker Lodge is being decommissioned and the first step is hazardous materials abatement which will be followed by a full demolition of the building once that work has been completed. The Baker Lodge beds were replaced by the expansion and construction at Dunrovin Park Lodge. That new space opened in 2010. Thorough assessments of Baker Lodge were undertaken to assess the condition of the building and potential future use. These reviews determined that the building is unusable for any public purpose and the cost to begin to bring it up to code and meet compliance standards would be significant. “We have done a number of assessments and all the information leads us to the same conclusion,” Health Service Administrator for Northern Health, Margaret Sadlon said. “We continue to explore new opportunities to meet the demands for safe and appropriate residential living in the community.” Northern Health is committed to working with all community representatives and the Ministry of Health on sustainable long-term solutions to the challenges in the community and across the region related to the needs for residential care facilities. The tender for the full demolition will be posted in the near future and the work will not affect operations at GR Baker Hospital.

HEAL Northern Health has partnered with the community in Quesnel to provide programs that are the envy of many communities in the North.

From Men’s Health, to HEAL, to a number of healthy lifestyle advocacy groups, Northern Health has strong relationships with a community that takes the lead in the region. The men’s health screenings at Cariboo Pulp and Paper in Quesnel is an example of Northern Health engaging men in Northern BC. Men’s health screenings have been hosted throughout the North, at venues such as sporting events, industry expos and shopping malls. The unique partnership with industry in Quesnel provided employees of the mill an advanced screening session which included blood glucose testing, cholesterol, blood pressure and healthy lifestyle planning. The health improvement screenings at the

Cariboo Pulp and Paper shows the commitment of the Quesnel community, including local industry and residents, to ensure they are on the right track to a healthy lifestyle. “We know that men in Northern BC are not accessing health services in a proactive manner,” Men’s Health Lead for Northern Health, Brandon Grant said. “Going to where the men are was identified as a critical strategy and Quesnel was the first on board in the first step of that journey of outreach.” In addition, the HEAL program has been working in Quesnel which boasts one of the strongest networks building local food security. Through FARMED’s Junior Famer program, for example, children grow herbs and vegetables and

learn the importance of locally grown food. “We want to encourage people to pay attention to food security in their communities’” HEAL Network Coordinator for Northern Health,” Christine GlennieVisser, said. “We can’t do that without strong community leaders and advocates to do the work on the ground.” Northern Health also values the relationships that have been established that have led to a strong air quality advocacy group, a minimum housing standards group, and a group that is working hard on scenic walk ways and infrastructure to support healthy and active lifestyles. Much attention is being paid to the federal budget bill and the limited time MPs have to debate that massive piece of legislation with its embedded changes to Canada’s environmental laws, but the same issues of time-limited debate and the undermining of the legislative process are playing out in BC. With eight days left to go in this spring session, we have over 20 pieces of legislation still requiring substantive debate. The flood of new bills over the past few days has been overwhelming, and it includes legislation for coordinating police forces, managing animal health, re-establishing provincial park boundaries, and changing the school calendar. Legislation to get rid of the HST and to restore the PST also needs to be waded through before we wind up at the end of May. Simply put, the amount of late legislation is either gross incompetence on the part of the government or a deliberate attempt to avoid scrutiny of these bills, especially the HST/PST legislation. There is no conceivable way MLAs of any stripe can give enough attention to the bills before us to vote on them in an informed way. The legislation before us has been so hastily drafted that some of the bills are full of spelling and grammatical errors and have obviously been cut and pasted from other jurisdictions. That suggests that the civil servants who wrote the bills haven’t been given time to do their due diligence, putting even more onus on MLAs to pay close attention to the language, content, and intent of these bills. The Finance Minister has publicly stated that the PST and HST legislation is complex and was still being drafted right up to its introduction in the House, clearly signaling that every MLA will have to pay very close attention to how the government is going to unwind their own HST nightmare. Unfortunately, the Premier says she won’t extend the session to fully debate these bills; however, we owe it to British Columbians to give due diligence to this legislation. I believe the NDP could help by committing to stop the over-the-top speechifying that has become the norm for them and by committing to move bills quickly to committee stage debate (clause by clause), where the real scrutinizing work is done. With this promise, the Premier should then extend the session for as long as is necessary for all MLAs to do the primary job they were elected to do: to read, analyze, debate and ask questions about the government’s proposed legislation, make amendments where necessary, and vote on each bill in an informed manner with the interests of all British Columbians in mind.

Integris, supporting your girls Each year, 1,500 women come to GR Baker Memorial Hospital to have screening mammograms done. A screening mammogram is an x-ray exam of the breast on a woman who has no symptoms. Another 300 women have diagnostic mammograms performed here. A diagnostic mammogram is an x-ray exam of the breast of a woman who either has a breast problem (for example, a breast lump), or has had a change show up on a screening mammogram. One of the most recent advances in x-ray mammography is digital mammography. Digital (computerized) mammography is similar to

standard mammography, in that x-rays are used to produce detailed images of the breast. Digital mammography uses essentially the same mammography equipment as conventional mammography, but the system is equipped with a digital receptor and a computer instead of a film cassette. The digital receptor is what captures the image (similar to the memory card for digital cameras). The efficiency of the digital receptor allows us to receive the images faster, which results in a shorter exam time (approximately half that of film-based mammography) and fewer repeats done as a

result of images that are too dark or too light. With digital, we can also transmit images over phone lines or a network for remote consultation with other physicians. We are grateful for the fundraising efforts of Integris Credit Union with their 2nd Annual Support Your Girls pub night. Events like these help raise awareness and support within our community and for this we are appreciative. To date the Quesnel Integris Credit Union has donated $33,000 towards the purchase of a digital mammography. Call 1-800-663-9203 to book your screening mammogram today.

Simpson requests safety report B.C.’s Independent MLAs are calling on the government to immediately release its health and safety public engagement report responding to oil and gas development in Northeastern B.C. Bob Simpson (Cariboo North) and Vicki Huntington (Delta South) hope to hear what health and safety concerns the government has identified in Northeastern B.C. – the centre of natural gas development in the province. “The minister of health received the public engagement report on March 31,” Huntington said. “It’s been over a month now, and we would like to see what health and safety concerns were identified. “While the government has the document, it shouldn’t be withheld from people directly impacted by natural gas frack-

ing. They deserve to hear about the health and safety concerns affecting their families and communities.” In January, the Fraser Basin Council was commissioned to undertake the public engagement – the first phase of the Ministry of Health’s threephase human health risk assessment of oil and gas development in the North. Hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) technology has tapped vast underground shale gas reserves and is a controversial process linked to manmade earthquakes, significant water usage, and incidents of environmental contamination and poisonous sour gas leaks. In question period Tuesday, Huntington called on the government to release the report, noting groups including the Northern Health Authority, the Peace River Regional District,

various First Nations, the BC Grain Producers Association, and the Peace Environment and Safety Trustees Society have all “demanded action.” In February 2011, citizens, labour, health groups, and other organizations called for a public inquiry into whether the current regulation of oil and gas adequately protects public health. The MLAs visited the Peace River region in March to explore some of these issues firsthand and listen to local concerns. “The premier promised this project to people over a year ago,” Simpson said. “The report represents the first stage of the process and it’s been sitting on the Minister’s desk for over a month. People in the Peace want to know when it will be released and when the next phase will begin.”

OPINIONS Steady as she goes

T

he Conservative government last Wednesday marked one year since it won a majority of seats in the House of Commons. Prime Minister Stephen Harper pledged to MPs to continue working on the issues the party campaigned on — reducing and eventually eliminating the deficit, making Canada competitive in the world economy, getting tougher on crime and managing the federal government more efficiently. The Conservatives have now been in power for close to six and onehalf years. The first five and one-half were as a minority government and that taught Harper and his MPs some valuable lessons. One of the most important is to keep the rhetoric to a minimum and concentrate on getting the job done. It is always better to outperform what is expected, rather than trumpet loudly about what you hope to do and then not achieve it. Harper recently put a toe across the line by claiming that a former NDP leader had opposed the Second World War. While he was correct that CCF leader J.S. Woodsworth opposed the war in 1939 (and immediately lost his post as leader), the NDP itself was not formed out of the CCF until 1961 – 22 years later. Politicians are far better to keep expectations low and make comments that are non-provocative and deliver more than the public expects. One way to do so is to avoid rhetoric and concentrate on the job at hand. For the most part, the Conservatives have done that. The deficit is steadily getting lower, there is some effort to reduce the size of government, taxes are not being raised and Canada continues to be in a stronger economic position than most countries. A steady and careful approach to government is the best way to continue to achieve results. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

Motherhood has its moments T

he most magical moment of my life was holding my first child right after he was born. The only other moment that can match that happened three years later when I was blessed with my second child, a beautiful baby girl. Would I want to repeat that experience and have a third? No thanks, I’m thrilled with two and my husband is as well. Our children, on the other hand, want more. “I don’t see why we can’t have another baby,” our eight-year-old daughter pleaded recently. “Yeah,” her 11-year-old brother agreed. “We’ll do all the work, we promise!” Right. I’m pretty sure I heard them singing that tune a couple of years back when they were begging for dogs. That time, I caved. This time, I won’t. I loved the baby stage and every time I see a baby,

On A Brighter Note precious memories come flooding back. Yet I never have that longing desire to have more because my family already feels complete. I also don’t want to be outnumbered. “Why don’t you babysit instead?” I suggested to the kids. “I have friends who have babies. “While I visit with the mommies you two could play with their little ones.” Thinking that was a grand idea, Daisy handed me the phone so I could make instant arrangements. If only I could have been this clever when they were asking for puppies.

On that day I’m likely to receive wonderful homemade gifts and be showered with love and affection. If I’m really lucky, the kids will pick up their stuff lying all over the house, figure out where it goes and put it away. In honour of my inspiring grandmothers, my loving mother-in-law and my beautiful mother who brought me into this world when she was still just a child herself, I thank all the mothers out there who are also doing their best. Whether we’re rich or poor, working or not, married or single, all good moms want the same thing: to raise healthy, happy people who feel loved and love life. Isn’t that what we wished for them the first time we held them in our arms? To watch my son interviewing kids for Mother’s Day, please visit LoriWelbourne.com. One of my best friends has a BBB rating for her current mood in motherhood and I’ll never forget when she first told me about it. “I find myself feeling either blessed, burdened or buzzed,” she said sipping her glass of wine after dinner. Slurping back a Baileys and coffee at the time, I completely agreed. Being a mom is the most glorious, rewarding and joyful gift imaginable. It can also be the most challenging, frustrating and overwhelming job ever. Alternating between these mindsets is just part of the gig. If you’re a mom and this never happens to you, you must be a saint. I am not. I’m just a typical busy mom trying to strike a balance that works well for me and my family while doing my best to feel blessed way more often than burdened or buzzed. Some days are easier than others, but Mother’s Day should be a breeze.

FEEDBACK Why? Editor: Why is there so much controversy over the city manager “resigning”? Is this council so afraid to take responsibility for an error in judgment? Is council’s action going to mean a large impact on our tax dollar that is not been budgeted for? Why is everything held in camera? Is the taxpaying public not allowed to know how those we elected are governing our city? There is an old saying if one protest too much, there is definitely something they’re hiding. In this case, I believe it is a lot and council should come out and do the right thing; surely there is someone other than Councillor Thapar that has enough gumption to stand up and be honest and open about city happenings. It is time that we taxpayers get more answers than questions from those people we elected. R. Campbell Quesnel

Exploring priorities for seniors Editor: Your readers should know that a lot is happening with a new group promoting action, as opposed to talk, on issues affecting local seniors. Voices for North Cariboo Seniors (the title of which was borne from an Observer headline!) attracted nearly 70 seniors at its second monthly meeting in late April. Issues centred on hospital care, residential and inhome care, transportation, accessibility and the controversial Drive Able program. We understand that some headway is being made on this driver’s license testing program, which intimidates some with confusing and alien forms of testing for license renewals. A petition

expressing concern about the program’s testing process and calling on the provincial legislature to respect and consult with seniors in future testing procedures is being widely circulated by MLA Bob Simpson. Our president, Peter Nielsen, has written a letter to Northern Health calling for immediate action on several fronts, including a halt or better yet, reversal of the steady erosion of local hospital beds from 100 down to 31 at present, steady decline in home care services for seniors, untrained family and friends of ailing seniors being expected to deliver care instead of health care workers, the need to commute to Prince George for dialysis treatments and the need

for new long-term care beds in our community. Because many seniors are not connected by email and internet, we have made a commitment to communicate by nonelectronic means, such as this letter to the editor, news releases, posters, etc. We will also keep in touch with the Quesnel and District seniors’ Society and the local OAPO group at the Golden Centre. In fact, we encourage all seniors to join one or both of those groups to help stay informed and to give the groups more political clout through strength in numbers. We are also working with the Seniors Advocacy Service to keep everyone informed. Stay tuned for news about their Seniors’ Info Day

at the Legion, June 15. Also, thanks are due to our Quesnel Legion for caring and donating the use of their hall for these meetings. Our next meeting will be held at 2 PM, this coming Thursday, May 17th at the Legion. We have invited a representative of Northern Health to attend and provide information about seniors housing, whether it be residential care, both private and public assisted living availability, as well as in-home care. We will be exploring priorities for new seniors housing. We will discuss the need for improved and expanded in-home care. We intend to prepare an inventory of home care availability for seniors and a ‘wish list’ for future home care.

We are developing an ongoing calendar of events of interest to seniors in the North Cariboo. Why am I involved in Voices for North Cariboo Seniors? I am hearing too many horror stories; and I have ailing parents in need of services that I feel are lacking or perhaps threatened in our community. And my main reason? Maybe a little selfish... but I want to work to ensure that there is quality care available for us rapidly aging baby boomers who wish to retire here in Quesnel and will need the care that we are now providing to our aged loved ones. Ron Paull Vice President, Voices for North Cariboo Seniors

Fuseables™ take the guesswork out of colour choices

P

lant breeders must not get much sleep, they seem to be spending their time dreaming up new ideas for the gardening world. One of the latest developments is called Fuseables ™. It is a great concept for us, the growers and you, the gardener. The Pan American Seed Company have taken two different varieties of seeds and fused them together into a pellet. The pellets produce a well-balanced variety, plus the pelletized seed is easier for growers to sow. Often when you have a seed mix the colours are not in an even proportion so this takes away the risk and produces a more desirable blend.

Depending on the variety of the combination of seeds, the gardener benefits in two ways. Either, they have been chosen to provide a longer blooming time or they simply make a great colour combination. A good example of this is lobelia. This annual has been around a long time providing light airy colour in baskets and window boxes. But, it does tend to die out later on in the season and so disappears from your basket. But now they have fused seeds of an early flowering lobelia Riviera White and a late flowering White Lady lobelia together in a pellet. They call this mix White Knights lobelia. There is also a cheerful blue combination called

Blues Brother which combines Riviera Midnight Blue and Crystal Palace. Fuseables™ take out the guess work on what colours look good together. Take Pink Dream petunia for instance, it combines Debonair Dusty Rose and Dreams Pink. It results in an even balance of both colours which results in a stunning, easy-togrow hanging basket. You’ll save the time

humming and hawing over what looks good together, the guess work has already been done for you. The same also goes for the Under the Sun coleus. The maroon and gold of Versa Crimson Gold and chartreuse Versa Lime is an eye-catching combination. The two varieties have been fused together and pelletized. Under the Sun can be grown in

HOT TUB SALE EVENT! Rooted Gallery show celebrates life and beauty ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Friends for many years, Cathie Allen and Jim Savage are now collaborative artists, sharing the newest show at the Quesnel Art Gallery: Rooted. With several different media and a wide range of subject matter, Rooted reflects the people, homes and landscapes in their lives. For Cathie, her work flows from her love of the land, of gardening and the beautiful vegetables she pulls from the ground. “The underground beauty of root vegetables is often overlooked, but that beauty then becomes sustenance on our tables,” she said. She admitted there’s not a vegetable she doesn’t like, but some handling leaves much to be desired. “Vegetables need to be prepared and presented properly,” she added. In the translation of her passion for vegetables to the canvas, Cathie said visualizing a subject then putting it on paper is very exciting. However, creating her mental musings is a challenge but very

rewarding. “I love working from the bottom up, starting with the foundation colours, then working with the shading. I love the whole process of watercolour painting,” she said. With more than 20 years of creative experience, Cathie said one of the biggest obstacles to producing work is finding the time to get at it. “Art takes energy and my focus for many years was gardening,” she said. “But the last couple of years I’ve made time in winter.” And with the gallery deadline looming, both Cathie and Jim said they used this as incentive to finish their pieces. “Jim and I needed a reason to get painting,” she said with a smile. Art is a relatively recent pursuit for Jim Savage. Although he was an avid artist as a youth, his life led him in different directions and he left art behind. “It happens,” he said of the long hiatus. However, about 10 years ago, Jim connected with an older artist in Kelowna. One of her goals was to break down barriers to artistic expression. see PAGE A15

Artists follow their creative passion from A14 Jim took the challenge and after several courses with that artist he was excited to explore his artistic side. “But I found it hard to maintain that initial excitement. Life gets in the way,” he said. “Something had to give.” In his work world, Jim was always working to strict deadlines. So, after much discussion, the artistic duo decided to apply for a show at the Art Gallery and were accepted. “We created an artistic deadline for this show,” Jim said. “It’s been intense but fun. I couldn’t have done it though without the support of my wife Martha and my friends.” He especially appreciates the support from Cathie saying she’s a constant source of inspiration. “I really admire her work.” Jim says he’s still exploring different styles and media and his work in the show reflects that wide subject matter. One of his favourite

pieces, and admittedly one of the show stoppers, is a mixed media on canvas work labeled Near Churchill, Manitoba, 1957. This is a work based on a self-portrait by the artist’s father while hunting in the 1950s. “It resonates with the viewer and evokes strong emotion,” Jim said. Although a little intimidated by the public display of his creations, Jim says life is too short and it’s been his dream for many years to explore his artistic side. “I’ve never spent so much time painting,

but I really enjoyed it,” he said. Both artists have also included in the show prints of some of their work. Jim said he went the distance to produce his prints on high quality, archival fine art paper, with top of the line archival-grade inks. “This way, they are an accurate representation of my work and will last,” he said. Rooted hangs in the gallery until May 26. The show is sponsored by Cariboo Pulp and Paper. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Last minute gift ideas to make Mother’s Day special Consider the following list of last-minute gift ideas and surprise mom with your thoughtfulness. • Magazine Subscription There are magazines for every interest, from river rafting to raising rodents. • Online Gift Cards Don’t have time to run to the store, or perhaps Mom’s favorite place to shop is online? Just about every major merchant offers online gift cards that you can have emailed to her within 24 hours and sometimes instantly. • A Phone Call If Mom lives at a distance, a long phone call is one of the best gifts you can give. Set aside a chunk of time, think about the stuff going on in your life and questions you’d like to ask her, then dial away. If it’s an option, make the call even more special by using Skype video chat or iPhone FaceTime. • Club Memberships You can order special monthly club subscriptions for everything from fruit and wine to movies and massages. • Flowers It’s never too late to send flowers for Mother’s Day. Search online for last-minute deals from merchants like FTD or 1-800-Flowers. Otherwise, call a few local florists to see what they can offer for under $30. If Mom’s local, hit up your supermarket’s floral department for a nice bouquet or find a garden plant for the mom with a green thumb. • Financial Advice This one definitely falls within the “unique” category, but the gift of financial advice is invaluable for most people. This is especially true for anyone nearing retirement age. • Brunch Mother’s Day brunch deals abound in cities across the country. Call Mom’s favorite restaurants to find the best specials. If reservations are booked up, consider preparing an at-home brunch. Present your

mother with a menu of her preferred breakfast dishes like banana pancakes, veggie omelette or french toast. Don’t forget to buy a bottle of inexpensive cham-

pagne and orange juice for a special toast. • Her Own Domain This may not work if your mother’s name is Mary Smith or Susan Jones, but

otherwise you might just have a chance of securing an Internet domain in her own name. If you’re handy with the computer, you might whip up a silly website focus-

ing on something she loves. • Slideshow Every mother loves to relive family moments and photos are sure to bring a smile to her face.

R

elay For Life is the culmination of hundreds of hours of hard work by a legion of volunteers. The event is designed to honour those who are battling cancer, survived cancer and those who succumbed to the disease. Throughout the day the stage is filled with local entertainers who help made the day special for participants and spectators. Sharon MacDonald, who organizes this important element of Relay, said it’s never a problem filling the schedule and is happy with this year’s lineup. “We begin with those who have performed for Relay before and are committed to the event,” she said. “We start with morning entertainers who appeal to the survivors, easy-going music, then build to high-energy acts as we enter the evening portion of the day.” This year, MacDonald said, they’re thrilled to add such acts as Tim and Jemma Reeves, the bands Five Point with John Pinel, Orange Years, Correlieu Jazz Band and a special treat, Gold Pan City Dancers.

She also mentioned how privileged Relay is to have Barry McKillican again managing all the sound along with his various family members. With about 16 different groups performing on the Friendship stage, MacDonald said it was very important to co-ordinate with McKillican on transitioning from one act to another. “We have dancers, musicians and different groups with different requirements and they all have to transition smoothly on and off the stage,” she said. MacDonald is MCing the event and requests each group to provide a biography. This way, she can provide background and promotion for anything the performers might have new to their group, or just letting the crowd know a little about each performance. MacDonald said they had considered bringing in a big name group but everyone was committed to the homegrown aspect of Relay. “It’s about those people on the track, the entertainment supports them and we’re proud of our local talent; we don’t need to look anywhere else,” she said.

“The bigger variety on stage means more variety of people in the park.” Relay For Life includes many respectful ceremonies honouring those touched by cancer such as the survivors lap, the Fight Back Team and the lighting of the luminaries.

After the Legion Pipe Band brings the survivors into the park and onto the track, one tradition always touches MacDonald’s heart. “Three survivors in their yellow shirts, Carol Sisson, Cora Koyama and Marion Cooper, sing Oh Canada. It’s so moving,” she said. “Relay For Life touches everyone and it’s so emotional for so many.” MacDonald is looking forward to this year’s Relay, May 26 in LeBourdais Park, and knows the entertainment will again pump up the crowd, but the people in the park also energize the entertainers. “The crowd is so appreciative. It’s very relaxing but the on stage performers are also very professional. It’s a great show, all day long, right up to 11 p.m.,” she said with a wide grin. “All the elements are there for a perfect performance from start to finish.” There’s still time to form a team for the May 26 Relay For Life. For information, answers to questions or how to become involved with Relay, contact Michelle Godfrey, 250-983-8815.

Geraldine Sill’s happy to have the weekly bus option for her trips to town from her home in Nazko.

Go to website

Contributed photo

Sill’s worry-free commute Geraldine Sill comes to town from Nazko by the community bus. The band provides community members this option every Wednesday. It comes in at 10 a.m. and leaves for home at 4 p.m. This is a Godsend for the 10 – 20 people who take the bus each week. “Before there was the bus, and I had to come to town for a doctor’s appointment, I would have to hire someone to bring me. It would cost between $60 and $80 each trip,” she said. It could often mean that all of Geraldine’s money would go for this expense. “Everything is expensive out in Nazko. There are limited groceries available and even the gas is expensive.” So the bus is a huge savings for Geraldine. If Geraldine can’t get a medical appointment on a Wednesday, she can sometimes take the medical van to town

now although it isn’t running at the moment. When asked about the experience of riding the bus to town, there doesn’t seem to be too much exciting about the trip, “I sleep on the way in!” Geraldine has a heart problem that limits her ability to walk far. She can walk to visit neighbours but she isn’t able to take part in the walking program in Nazko in which people clock their steps on pedometers and collectively compete with other bands. So using the bus and walking are Geraldine’s lowimpact modes of transportation. They mostly work well for her. “We really want to encourage people to think before they get in their cars to drive somewhere. We are putting carbon into the air each time we start up and drive. In

addition, we know that cheap, easily obtained, relatively cleanly produced gasoline is becoming a thing of the past and we need to consider other ways we can adapt to these coming changes,” Quesnel Climate Action Group’s Maureen Trotter said. In the run up to Clean Air Day, June 6, Quesnel Climate Action Group, in partnership

with Baker Creek Enhancement Society, City of Quesnel, Quesnel Air Quality Roundtable and the Observer, present just a few of the many people who chose alternate ways to move around the city. If you have made this choice or know someone who has, contact 250-9925833 and let the community hear the story. – submitted by Maureen Trotter

Obituary Tribute

Justine Kozuchar July 12, 1921 ~ April 23, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our mother, Justine Kozuchar on April 23, 2012 at the Dunrovin Hospice House in Quesnel, BC. Justine’s loving family were with her during her short illness and end of life. Justine’s life was celebrated by her family and many friends at a service held at Clayton’s Funeral Chapel on Friday, April 27, 2012 with internment at the Quesnel Municipal Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. Justine was predeceased by her son David in November 1970 and her loving husband Steve in November 1984. Justine, born on July 12, 1921, in Endeavour, Saskatchewan was the first-born child of Pentley and Annie Wiwcharuk. She was raised in Regina, Saskatchewan and in 1942 enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a stenographer. In 1943 she met and married Steve Kozuchar. Justine and Steve left Regina and went to Cedarvale, BC where Steve worked road construction, building the Terrace/Prince Rupert Highway. In the years following 1944 they travelled to where the jobs were. Their journey took them across the western provinces to Prince George where Steve worked building the Prince George Airport and to Davidson and Carlyle, Saskatchewan, where Steve worked in the farming industry. On July 12, 1953, they moved to the homestead in Ethelbert, Manitoba to farm and raise their growing family of eight children: five sons and three daughters. In 1965 Justine heard on CBC radio that BC was like “the land of milk and honey” and she convinced Steve to make the big move from Ethelbert, Manitoba to Quesnel, British Columbia where Steve built the family a new home. Justine continued to raise the family and support Steve while he built his excavating business. During this time she worked for the BC Ministry of Forests in the Silviculture department for many years. With the family growing up, marrying and leaving home, Justine found time to make significant contributions to her community in Barlow Creek: she was prominent in organizing and mentoring the women of Barlow Creek Rainbow Club, she was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Quesnel Writers’ Guild and the Kersley Womens’ Institute,

where she enjoyed the fellowship of likeminded women. In 1984 she experienced the loss of her husband Steve. In 1991 she relocated to Victoria for a time and then returned “back home” to Quesnel in 1993 where she continued to live among many of her children and their families. She happily greeted grandchild after grandchild, and nurtured the growing family circle with dinners and happy times. Justine loved the simple things: the beauty in nature, whether it was the clouds, birds singing, sunsets, storms, butterflies, rocks, or scenery. She was informed, current and knowledgeable about the world around her and the universe beyond her. Her gardening talents were truly awesome! Justine loved music - from Bluegrass to Vivaldi and everything in between. She sang, danced, read and painted, leaving a treasured collection of her paintings over the years. She loved cooking, teaching cultural culinary skills to her grandchildren, and everyone else wanting to learn. She nurtured our family values and traditions and mentored everyone who came into the family. Justine will forever be remembered for her motto: “Families stick together no matter what...if anything happens to me, keep the family together”. We thank Justine for her love, support, guidance, courage and for the beautiful legacy of Family she gave us. Justine is survived and lovingly remembered by her Children: Shirlee, Donnajune, Joyce, Ray, Barry, Don and Ken; the wonderful partners they chose; the many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren; Nieces and Nephews - that make her family so special. She will be dearly missed by her brothers Connie and David, and sisters Evelyn, Jean and Elsie. “ May the Circle Be Unbroken “

Thinking of things to do – for those of you, young and old, who have read or are reading the Twilight Series, come down to the Museum and see our very own haunted doll. Mandy awaits your arrival with anticipation. Her soulful eyes follow you as you move in and around the artifacts. Mandy truly is a Cariboo treasure and if you didn’t believe in hauntings before you came in, you will at least have cause for thought before you leave. Do you happen to have...a picture of Wild Bill? That would be Bill Amsbaugh, a well-known person in

the forestry industry – well-known in the 40’s and 50’s. Wild Bill’s Lightning Still is set up at the Museum and we want a picture of him to place with the exhibit. While you are shopping at West Park Mall, make sure you stop and see the Museum’s Time Traveller. And, at the same time, take time to enter our contest! Find all the artifacts from A to Z; fill out the form; sign it and drop it off at the museum. There will be a draw for the winners with all the correct answers. The winning entry wins a membership for the Friends of the Museum, which includes an annual Pass to Quesnel Museum and Archives. As the tourist season goes into full swing, the museum has begun to“Caribooize” its Gift Shop. If you are a Cariboo artist with a product that characterizes the Cariboo, consider taking your wares to the Museum Gift Shop. Items are left on consignment and include a specific time frame for your merchandise. With tourists from all over looking for something unique, perhaps you have

PAST TIME that perfect something they

can take home as a souvenir. Contact Elizabeth to discuss specifics. Hoping to see you as you “pass time” at the museum. Life is measured not by accumulation but by outlay; not by how much saved, but by

how much expended; not by distance travelled, but by the road taken. Honey Affleck is chair of the Museum and Heritage Commission with the Quesnel and District Museum and Archives.

Air Miles to help raise funds for multi-centre The North Cariboo Multi-Centre Fundraising Committee is trying a new program in order to raise funds and prizes for the fundraising campaign. “We feel that establishing an Air Miles account for the fundraising campaign will provide us the opportunity to collect air miles on any purchasing that the fundraising campaign does, Eric Wickham, Chair of the Fundraising Committee explained. “More importantly, it provides the opportunity for local community members and local businesses to donate their air miles to the fundraising campaign through the transfer process that Air Miles has established. The committee plans on using air miles to purchase items that can be used as prizes for different community events and activities. “Through the fundraising process we frequently ask community members and businesses to provide financial support, Wickham added. “This program provides another means by which businesses and individuals can support the efforts of the fundraising committee. The North Cariboo Multi-Centre Fundraising Campaign Air Miles number is 8008 639 1070. Community members are encouraged to use this number when shopping at a business that supports the Air Miles program. Cards can also be provided to those individuals and businesses that would use one. The North Cariboo Multi-Centre will be a modern facility designed to replace aging infrastructure. It features a 1,600-seat NHL-sized arena, a 450-seat performing arts theatre and accompanying event and assembly space.

WEEK

NURSES

MAY 6 - 12 2012

Rapidly changing profession T

he healthcare industry is changing rapidly and nurses, the largest group of healthcare professionals in the nation, are at the forefront of these changes. Despite the difficult economic conditions of recent years, nursing as a profession has thrived -particularly when compared to other professions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that job growth for nurses will continue to be more rapid than the national average, making the profession among the best career choices available today. So what can nurses and those considering entering the field expect over the next decade? The demand for nurses will continue. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be nearly 712,000 new nursing positions by 2020, making this profession the fastest

growing occupation. One of the factors fueling the growth is the aging population and there will be great demand for nurses who are trained in geriatrics and who are able to work in ambulatory (i.e., outpatient) settings. More nurses will work in outpatient settings, home healthcare and nursing homes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also projects that hospital nursing jobs will grow much more slowly than jobs in outpatient facilities and home health care. This is due both to the growth of the aging population and the increase in the number of medical procedures done on an outpatient basis or in homes. Hospitals will increasingly require RNs to have four-year degrees. Many hospitals have begun hiring only those nurses with BSN (Bachelor of Science

in Nursing) degrees or providing incentives for their employees with twoyear associate degrees to return to school to earn their BSNs. Similarly, many nurses with BSNs are heading back to the classroom to become master’s degree-level nurse practitioners. Nurses are getting younger and older. During the last decade, a variety of efforts were made to make nursing more attractive to younger people. As a result, the number of younger nurses (ages 23 to 26) has grown significantly. This is expected to help offset the mass retirement of nurses that is expected to occur between now and 2020. At the same time, more people are entering the profession later in their careers as a result of the proliferation of two-year and accelerated nursing programs that were

developed largely to attract people from other fields. Nursing educators will be in demand as well. Nursing program faculty will be among the retirees who will leave the profession over the next decade and there is expected to be a shortage of nurse educators to take their places. Technology will continue to alter how nurses operate and learn. Come 2014, all medical records will be electronic, so nurses will be saying a final good-bye to their black pens and a big hello to keyboards and tablets. In hospitals, nurses will continue to rely on texting to relay messages or provide information to doctors. Technology, in the form of digital textbooks, mobile phone applications that access drug information and simulated online clinics, will continue to alter how nursing students learn.

More men seeking nursing jobs

M

ale nurses haven’t always been such a minority. Although men comprise only about 6 percent of today’s total nursing population in the United States, nursing schools for men were actually quite common and about half of the nation’s paid nurses were male during the early 1900s. By 1930, however, the percentage of male nurses dropped to a meager 1 percent, as men fled the profession for more lucrative occupations. That was the case for several decades, until the late 1980s, when inflation, nursing shortages, a rise in nursing salaries and shifting attitudes about gender

combined to attract new generations of men to the profession. Research indicates that men and women enter the profession for the same reasons. Both men and women are interested in working with sick and injured people and they are seeking careers that offer challenges, reasonable job security and good salaries. And with many parts of the United States and other western nations facing nursing shortages that are expected to peak in the mid-2020s, when much of the current generation of nurses will retire, men will have a vital role to play in filling those gaps. Some researchers have even predicted that the nation’s

ability to handle the projected shortage of nurses hinges on strong increases in the number of males entering the profession. While the number of men in nursing programs is growing, the public perception of male nurses, which has unfairly carried a negative connotation through the years, persists and continues to keep them away from the field. Many male nurses also recount stories of patients assuming they are doctors or asking why they had decided against attending medical school – as if being a nurse was a fallback position rather than a first choice. Others note that the scarcity of male role models, instructors and mentors, has

made it more difficult not only to enter the profession but also to advance their careers. At the same time nursing schools and organizations have launched initiatives aimed at recruiting men and these efforts are paying off, albeit slowly. The population of male nurses is increasing by roughly 2 to 3 per cent each year and it has been predicted that by 2020 males nurses will make up about 25 per cent of the total nursing workforce. Another factor that may spur the increase in male nurses is age. On average, male nurses tend to enter nursing at a younger age than female nurses and therefore have the potential for longer careers.

Lacrosse festivites JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

Minor lacrosse opened with a splash last weekend, May 5 – 6. The local lacrosse association invited teams from Prince George, Williams Lake and Mackenzie to play in Quesnel and had a two-day festival to celebrate their opening weekend. The league brought in L.A. Promotions to set up a mini festival outside the twin arenas. Kids were crawling through the muscle man gym, jumping on the velcro wall and lining up for the U.F.O. laser tag for the entire weekend of beautiful spring weather. The league also had a con-

cession set up, selling burgers, homemade cupcakes and everything in between. The festival was set up, from concession to laser tag, in an effort to raise funds for the league’s costs. But, despite the beautiful weather, the festival and concession didn’t meet expectations. “Everyone had a great time, but unfortunately it wasn’t a great fundraiser,” president of the local league, Lisa Scott said. Inside the arenas, the weekend was more succesful as kids fought to come out on top for the first weekend of league play. Each city was represented by a novice, peewee, bantam and midget team, except for

Mackenzie which did not have enough kids to field a novice team. The novice team split the weekend, with a win over WIlliams Lake and a loss to Prince George. The peewee Wildfire finished the weekend with a loss and a win, losing 11-2 to Prince George and winning 12-1 over Williams Lake. The bantam team fairly bulldozed their opponents, finishing the weekend with two wins. They beat Prince George 16-0 and Williams Lake 11-2. The midget Wildfire had the hardest time, finishing the weekend without a win, going down to Williams Lake 10-4 and Prince George 7-4.

Cariboo youth league kicks off season in Quesnel JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Cariboo Youth Soccer League came together last Sunday, May 6, for the season's first meet. A total of 28 teams, coming from as far north as Prince George to as far south as 100 Mile, congregated at the soccer fields. "The games went well," one of the directors of the QYSA, Gilbert Schotel, said. "For the most part the competition was pretty close." Quesnel fielded five teams: a girls and boys U12; a girls

and boys U 14; and a girls U16. The boys U16, however, weren't able to participate in the tournament. The U16 and U14 Quesnel Denny's Strikers came together well in the first games of the season, while the boys and the younger girls hit a few teething problems trying to mesh players who were unaccustomed to playing with each other. The U16 girls settled in quickly, playing well for both their games. The girls came out of the gate with a 3-1 win over a Prince George team then played to a 0-0 draw against the

The Quesnel Technics gymnastic gym doubled their competitions for the year last weekend, May 5 – 6, in Prince George. Kids from Williams Lake, Prince George and Fort St. James came out, along with the Quesnel troupe, for the Zone 8 2012 Championships, with the addition of Smithers, Kitimat and Terrace adding competition in the Prince George Invitational the same weekend. It was the second competition of the year for the club and coach Peggy Wilcox was satisfied with the results. "The kids did fabulous for their second competition," Wilcox said. The club fielded six girls in the Zone 8 championship, three Level One Argos, age 9 and 10, a Level One Tyro, between 11 and 12, along with two Level Twos, who were combined, Tyro and Argo.
