◆ COVER STORY

Alberni artist’s quilts go national CHARMEAD SCHELLA SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

A

lberni Valley quilter Patti Dance has come a long way since learning to quilt via paper piecing some 10 years ago. This month three of her quilts will go stitch-to-stitch with the country’s best at the Canadian National Juried Quilt Show in Halifax. Dance is as excited by the show as she is surprised that her quilts made it in with the nation’s top contenders. This is the first quilting competition she has entered. There are prizes awarded at the show, in the guise of both money and rosettes. Dance is uninterested in both. “The fact that my quilts made it into the show is enough for me,” Dance says. “Getting selected was the best.” Dance stumbled upon quilting over a decade ago almost by accident. She had been looking for a hobby, something in which to lose herself during free time away from her lengthy career as a lab technician. She tried many outlets, but none of them tweaked her passion or held her interest for long. Dance has tried her hand at batik, sewing, and stained glass. Quilting won her over. “My husband is a birder,” Dance says. “And I wanted something in my life that I could see myself doing well past retirement like his hobby for him. Quilting was the first thing that I got really passionate about and stuck with. ” Dance says that the methodical, mathematical, and exacting nature of quilting helped to hook her early on. She likes that it is an art in which one can follow other people’s patterns when learning. Although the Canadian National Juried Quilt Show is Dance’s first real competition, she is no stranger to displaying her art. Last year, Dance’s quilt ‘Lone Wolf ’ was one of 28 pieces to form a national collective called ‘O Canada’ that was a traveling exhibit. ‘O Canada’ traveled to three states in America (Ohio, California, and Texas), exhibiting 28 artists’ work for 11 months. Dance also exhibited her quilts at Rollin Art Centre in 2008 in a solo show. Dance’s three entries to the Canadian National Juried Quilt Show are: ‘Bear Country’, ‘Jack and the Pulpit’, and ‘It Really Is Your Grandmother’s Quilt’. The Canadian National Juried Quilt Show runs May 29 – June 2 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Winning quilts will appear in a national quilting magazine that is published and distributed countrywide.

Smart meter swap-out sparks fire Inbrief WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Human error, not electrical malfunction sparked an electrical fire during a smart meter swap-out at a Port Alberni residence on Tuesday, Port Alberni Fire Chief Tim Pley said. Fire crews responded to a call about an ‘electrical problem’ at a house in the 3200 block of Ninth Avenue just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Upon arrival, firemen saw smoke coming out of the basement door adjacent to the electrical meter base. “They heard sounds of fire crackling inside the door,” Pley said. Firemen forced their way in the basement of the house where they found a small fire burning near

the electrical panel. Because it’s electrical they doused the fire with chemical extinguishers instead of water, Pley said. Flames were making their way up the

inside of the wall so firemen forced their way into the main floor of the house and stopped the fire before it went any further, Pley said. Firemen found

signs of melted electrical wire and charred wood around the meter area, but human error caused the flare-up, he said. “One of the meter technicians caused

a short in the meter base when he used a tool inside it,” Pley said. “The smart meter never even got installed yet — there’s no evidence I’ve seen that they cause fires.” Pley said he’s heard of other fires involving smart meter swap-outs. “In those cases the meter bases were old and brittle but that’s not the cause here,” Pley said. Hydro has been cut from the home, which has now been turned back over to the owner. “He’s going to have to get an electrician to repair the wiring and get it inspected before power can be restored,” Pley said. “He’s insured but it’s going to be a pretty big job.” Corix Utilities has been contracted by BC Hydro to install 1.8 million smart meters throughout

B.C. — 17,800 meters in Port Alberni. Corix employees and a vehicle were present at the incident on Ninth Avenue. Corix officials couldn’t be reached for comment. BC Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk confirmed that there was a problem during an installation of a smart meter in Port Alberni. “The work was done by a qualified electrician with over 15 years of experience,” Olynyk said. Olynyk said he would reserve further comment about the matter until he speaks with Corix officials. Hydro and Corix have put the homeowner up in a hotel for now. “We want to make right by the customer just as quick as we can,” Olynyk said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Letter prompts crossing review A letter from a city resident about pedestrian crossings has turned into a review of them. City engineer Guy Cicon will be reviewing the request for crossing beacons at crosswalks across the Valley and report back to city council about them at their next meeting. Quoting Transport Canada, the letter notes that 26 per cent of fatalities occurred at crosswalks with no traffic control. And 362 pedestrians and 60 cyclists are killed each year in traffic crashes.

Council OK’s Weed and Feed

Council approved a permit for the pesticide Weed and Feed by Parks and Rec staff. The chemical will be used at Bob Dailey Stadium, Black Sheep Rugby Field and Echo Park fields. Other less stringent options aren’t strong enough, or require several applications totalling thousands of dollars. Parks and Recreation director Scott Kenny warned that pending provincial standards could drive up city costs for weed control by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Gaffe cuts mill budget maintaining existing funding or approve the new request and take the money from a contingency fund. There was no misunderstanding about the budget, Coun. The budget was approved for $235,000,” he said. “It’s a mistake to give $70,000 because we missed something — I didn’t miss anything.” Industrial Heritage Society member Hugh Grist addressed council, saying that he included the $70,000 when he made the request. “It’s not an error on our part,” Grist said. “Any error is between council and city finance.” The budget has been signed and sealed, Coun. Dan Washington said. The budget is $235,000 and they have to survive on that.” The group can apply next year.

Whoops. A gaffe during the city budget process has resulted in a $70,000 shortfall for McLean Mill and the likely spiking of a marketing professional before the job is posted. Councillors voted to maintain the mill’s $235,600 budget at Monday’s meeting. According to city finance manager Cathy Rothwell, the issue arose when council adopted the mill’s budget. But there was a gap in communication, Rothwell said. In February, the Industrial Heritage Society requested an additional $70,000 for insurance, track usage, utilities, and alarm monitoring. Rothwell recommended two options: either

A long list of repairs to be done and limited resources to do them marks the doling out of School District 70’s annual facilities grant. SD 70 maintenance operations manager Ernie Inglehart gave an update to trustees about the $968,000 AFG at their meeting on May 8. “We’re fortunate to have the dollars to deal with infrastructure issues,” Inglehart said. The district has had more time to plan and prepare for infrastructure issues this year. “We can attack issues globally in the district now,” Inglehart said.

Electoral change has swept through the Tseshaht First Nation. Nine council seats were up for grabs, and after the ballots were counted Tseshaht members elected six new faces and

three incumbents in the tribe’s election, which wrapped up on Saturday. New to the council are Hugh Braker, Janice Johnson, John Gomez, Debra Foxcroft, Eunice Joe, and Gina Pearson. Returning to council are Les Sam, Dennis Bill and Boyd Gallic.

Schools in the district were paid a visit by Inglehart this year, and he had conversations with administrators about repairs. After the discussions, Inglehart narrowed the repairs into three categories: boilers, classroom heating and the Bamfield Community School. Some $500,000 is going to be spent on boiler work at John Howitt and Maquinna Elementary Schools. Extensive exterior work is also planned for Gill Elementary School and Bamfield. At Gill, $50,000 has been earmarked for work in the back of the school including painting, as well as replacing rotting cladding and windows. Continued / 8

Incumbents Willard Gallic, Richard Sam, Luke George, Erma Robinson and Mike Watts weren’t elected. According to an official election results notice, 338 out of 700 Tseshaht eligible voters cast their ballots for a slate of 29 candidates. Hugh Braker garnered the most votes at 209. Janice Johnson earned the next highest at 150. Eunice Joe tallied 142 ballots while John Gomez notched 132. One hundred and twenty nine votes were cast for Boyd Gallic, 122 for Les Sam. Gina Pearson won her bid with 117 votes, Deb Foxcroft with 115. Dennis Bill rounded out the group with 114 votes. There may be new faces on the council but they’re not inexperienced. A Queen’s Counsel lawyer, Braker opened his own practice in Alberni after working as in-house counsel for the Nuuchah-nulth Tribal Council for 10 years. He’s president of the Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of B.C. and an appointee to the New Relationship Trust.

Deb Foxcroft returns to the Tseshaht First Nation council.

Foxcroft served with council previously, and has worked as an assistant deputy minister with the B.C. Ministry of Children and Families since. A swearing in ceremony will be held for the new council at a later date. A chief councillor will be appointed by councillors through an internal process. A mood of change permeated the weeks leading up to the election, Tseshaht member Valentine Gomez, whose bid for council fell short, said. People were concerned about cutbacks, budgetary matters, and especially concerned about a lack of

communication to members about matters that impacted them. “Things would go on and the people would find out later about it,” Gomez said. “There was definitely a hunger for change.” The former council was nearly swept and the writing was on the wall a long time ago, he added. “Some said the wrong thing and were turfed, or said nothing, which meant they didn’t fight for or against anything and that killed them.” Employment, communication, and capacity building are some of the critical issues facing the tribe, Gomez said. “We need room to grow and we need infrastructure and a stable economy to accommodate it,” he said. “All those numbers we lost to small pox are coming back now and we’re growing so fast,” he said.

Youth questions role in global aid FIRST NATION — THIRD WORLD Brendan Hamilton...in Uganda Brendan Hamilton is in Jinja, Uganda to perform aid work with Videa, an NGO based out of Victoria. Never did I expect that this journey would already be past the halfway point. During our predeparture training we were told that we would all more than likely experience culture shock. Looking back at all my notes from the workshops in Victoria before we departed it seems that I haven’t experienced culture shock, nor do I show any symptoms. However, the simple thought that we are at the halfway point is really a dejecting thought in the back of my mind. Lately I’ve been playing tug-of-war with myself in my

head. One side is excited to go back home, have that little sense of nostalgia and just tell everybody that is interested in my excursion here. Now the other side simply does not want to leave Uganda. As I explained in my other post, there is so much to do here, which is a major contributing factor. As much as a miss home, I’ve already seen it all. My beloved parents raised me and always said that this world is much bigger then our little valley, but it’s also contradicting at the same time because the world is bigger than Uganda. I’ve got a feeling that I’m going to be doing a lot of travelling in what I have in my youthful years. Of course what better way to see

the world when you’re young and adventurous? I believe that my mind likes to wander too much, and often in my spare time I’m usually at a cafÊ, thinking about anything. There are so many options for myself at this time in my life that it’s no wonder that the majority of the time I just anticipate what I could do, and what I can do. I hope that makes sense. But knowing that this a great experience for a 19-year-old stepping out into reality of life, I often don’t know what I could do with this kind of experience. Many, many options I have thought about, but none related to this kind of work. I do have another two months here, plenty of time to really hunker down and plan out a future of many options. For now it’s a matter of focusing on my work and doing the best job I can. Speaking of work, what a joy it has been, sorry if I keep anybody on their toes, but I will have a full post on what I do, where I work, and

what kind of projects I’m currently involved and working on. Work is another subject that often crosses my mind here and there. Because Uganda is a developing country, and seeing for myself that poverty is on a biblical scale, I feel a sense of helplessness, uselessness, and sometimes (it) really makes me think: is all the work here really worth it? The reason I bring this up is because it’s a good contribution, sometimes even a major one. Giving an individual an opportunity, even if it’s as simple as teaching them basic computer lessons, or hosting a soccer game once a week, shows that there are chances in life that someone just has to make the effort to pursue it. There always has to be an opposition, at the same time, doing all my work at WomenFirst, then going home, or on the weekend when I see poverty in Jinja or near my residence. It shows that no matter how much work I do, it seems that I’m not helping on a very big scale.

I just have to remember that every little bit helps. Keeping in mind that not only has it almost been two months, I also have another month here. So, is the glass half full or half empty? I’ve really forgotten how far away home really is, and what it’s like, aside from the rain year-round of course. In no time I’ll be home from my globetrotting journey. I’m just grateful at this point that my parents and education have armed me to the teeth with the knowledge and mental capacity to take care of myself when in doubt, especially overseas. Victims tally losses in vandalism spree Port Alberni RCMP are on the hunt for those responsible a weekend vandalism spree, Cpl. Jen Allan said. Several residents awoke Sunday morning to discover smashed home and vehicle windows, trashed lawn ornaments, and thefts of property contained within the vehicles. In all, police received 11 vandalism complaints from a variety of locations in the Valley, Allan noted in a press release. The estimated cost of the damage is approximately $2,000, which will be shouldered by the victims and/or their insurance companies, Allan noted. Specifically, the vandalism occurred in the Fifth, Sixth, Eighth and 11th

Avenue areas, as well as on Morton and Montrose streets. The incident is similar to a vandalism spree in central Port Alberni several weeks ago. In the majority of those incidents windows were smashed by rocks. “These senseless acts of vandalism are extremely problematic for the victims and ultimately every community member as the costs are often absorbed and converted into elevated insurance premiums, Allan said. “The random pattern of the damage suggests that the culprits were on a malicious crime spree damaging everything in their paths, and this is obviously very concerning.

A fourth man said to have been involved in the incident wasn’t charged. All the men are Port Alberni residents, Allan said. The men were apprehended as a result of a number of investigative leads, as well as from video from the Petrocan station where the incident happened, she added. The men have been released from custody on a promise to appear in court on June 21, as well as a no-contact with the victim, Bert McCarthy. The information hasn’t been sworn yet, therefore the name of the adult that has been charged can’t be released, Allan said. On May 12, McCarthy , 41, — a Hupacasath tribe member — was assaulted by four men outside of the Petrocan station on River Road. McCarthy suffered a severely broken leg in the incident and was in Nanaimo General Hospital but recently

released. McCarthy was earlier traveling by boat up the Alberni canal when he encountered two jet skiers. “The assault stems from that incident, Allan said. McCarthy traveled to Alberni where he docked his boat before making his way to Petrocan. There, he found two vehicles with jet skis on trailers. “There was an argument and the fight broke out, Allan said. An off-duty police officer driving along River Road found McCarthy being attacked by four individuals. The officer stopped to help McCarthy and the suspects fled. Hupacasath chief councillor Steven Tatoosh said that he doesn’t know what all the facts are yet so he is reserving comment. “I’m going to see Berto today and will be speaking to police. Hupacasath fisherman Tom Tatoosh said it’s fishing season and aboriginal fishermen — including himself — are often sworn at by people along the road. “I don’t know all the facts yet so I don’t want to say too much, Tatoosh said. “But I really hope that this has nothing to do with race. Anyone with any information about the incident can call police at 250-723-2424 or Port Alberni Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Officials from the Transportation Safety Board scoured the wreck of the prawn boat Jessie G on Tuesday in Port Alberni to find out what made her sink on May 4. Officials surveyed the 71-year-old boat in dry dock at Alberni Engineering and conducted interviews as part of their investigation on Tuesday. No specific cause has been determined yet, TSB marine investigator Glen Budden said. “We’ll take it back to our office now to piece together the sequence of events and look at the contributing factors around what happened, he said. The Coast Guard at Tofino received a distress call from the 42-foot vessel Jesse G just before 5:30 p.m. on May 4 after it capsized

Helicopter parents must give up hovering DANIELLE RENAUD Family Therapy

Dear Dr. Renaud: I heard the term “helicopter parent” for the first time yesterday and now I am wondering if I am one of those too. I try to protect my daughter from bad things. That’s my job, isn’t it? I don’t want any harm to come to her and this is a bad world we live in so that’s what I do. Good Mom

Dear Good Mom: Yes, your job is to protect your children from harm, but – and this is a big BUT – your job is also to teach them. Parents now make the mistake of confusing protection with education. Your job as a parent is to teach your kids how to be independent. You are supposed to prepare them for life; not protect them from everything. Unfortunately, wellmeaning parents are

smothering their kids and raising a generation of marshmallows – they look like they have substance but they melt at the slightest heat. I am seeing more and more of this in my practice and it concerns me. Beyond “helicopter” is “cockpit parent” – that is where the parent is not just hovering over everything the child does but actually drives everything. The child has no autonomy at all and is not allowed to

do anything as the parent is doing it all for them. The poor kid is just along for the ride. For the sake of your child’s development and self-esteem, please stop hovering and smothering. You know if you are doing that. Let them experience disappointment and failure. That is the only way they are going to develop self-confidence and resilience. I am not advocating letting them get run over by a car or anything

extreme, but they do have to learn about consequences of their choices. Experience is a good teacher and if you don’t allow them to have some unpleasant experiences they won’t learn and won’t be prepared for life. Remember, your job as a parent is to prepare them for life. Dr. Danielle Renaud helps parents deal with parenting and family issues. She can be reached at 778-421-1925 or drdrenaud@yahoo.ca.

Drastic ferry change vital Province’s ferry fleet sails into storm It’s going to take some time to turn the ship around, but at least there is recognition that B.C Ferries needs a major adjustment to how it does business. The reality is that the quasi-private corporation simply can’t continue on its current course, and it will take co-operation between coastal communities, the provincial government, and B.C. Ferries to chart a more sustainable future for the service from which coastal residents all demand a lot. B.C. Ferries has worked within its contract with the province to provide a service with little success over the past decade. Now the ferry commissioner has a new mandate and more leeway in deciding how B.C. Ferries will look in the future. Some of those ideas will come from coastal communities and it will be up to those communities to make some extremely difficult decisions. As Transport and Infrastructure Minister Blair Lekstrom said, everything is on the table. In other words, the status quo can’t continue and communities will have to choose between reduced service levels or paying to keep current service levels. All other ideas, such as bridges or cable ferries, will be considered. At the same time, B.C. Ferries will have to dig deep to find $45 million in efficiencies, all in an effort to keep fare rate increases down and promote better ridership numbers. Whatever the process determines, B.C. Ferries is eventually going to look much different than it has over its previous 52-year history. It’s going to take all hands on deck working together to mend it. — Nanaimo News Bulletin

ICTORIA – The B.C. government has rolled out its plan to reform BC Ferries, continuing the structural and cultural shift that started when the Crown corporation was quasiprivatized in the early years of B.C. Liberal rule. Politically, there is a lot at stake here. Premier Christy Clark’s year-long “families first” routine boils down to two projects, reining in rate increases at BC Hydro and BC Ferries. For weeks, Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom has been signaling there is bad news to come. Sparring with the NDP in question period, he has bluntly and repeatedly said the days of fully staffed vessels sailing with a third (or less) of their capacity are coming to an end. Tabling legislation to give the ferry

commissioner new powers over service levels as well as fares, Lekstrom revealed $80 million worth of sugar to help the tough medicine go down over the next four years. That’s on top of the $150 million annual subsidy. Quadra Island politician Jim Abram was first out with the predictable view of the Gulf Islands elite, dismissing this sum as paltry. It’s difficult to capture how self-centred and insulting this is, but I’ll try. Consider that the B.C. transportation ministry spent $460 million last year on highway operations. That’s for the province’s entire vast, weather-battered road network. This year’s operating subsidy to coastal ferries is approaching $200 million, nearly half of that. And increasingly, it goes to subsidize getaways for

those who choose isolation for its own sake. Basic financial information also exposes the falsity of NDP ferry critic Garry Coons’ onenote critique. It’s part of the highway system, he constantly says, comparing empty ferries with empty roads while ignoring the mandatory ferry staff and other costs. This fiscalfantasy policy implies another huge increase in subsidy, much of it a transfer from working people to the idle rich who can afford Gulf Islands real estate. Coons can’t say how much, probably because he has no idea. A key legislative change will allow BC Ferries to use revenues from its profitable main routes to subsidize little-used runs. This would be even more important if those revenues hadn’t been

squandered. And no, I’m not talking about the “fast ferries.” The story is detailed in Head On!, a 2004 book by former B.C. deputy highways minister R.G. Harvey. He describes how the Mike Harcourt government completed the “gross error” of building a new terminal at Duke Point, near Nanaimo. This run was to take truck and other traffic from congested Horseshoe Bay to the mid-Island from Tsawwassen. An alternative route from Richmond to Gabriola Island, with bridges to Vancouver Island, had been quietly scuttled after the W.A.C. Bennett government was defeated by the NDP in 1972. On a map, it’s clear this would have been the shortest route. Harvey says it would have cut travel time by half, and likely replaced the congested Horseshoe Bay dock. But Barrett would have had to tell his Nanaimo ferry union supporters that they were losing half their hours. Continued / 11

Mailbag: Feedback on budgets; both provincial and federal

!

Budget ‘steals’ from students To the Editor, I have read, even an editorial, that the school board must file a balanced budget. There is fear and expectation that a failure will result in the firing of the board and replacement by an appointee. That was done once, decades ago. The appointee as I recall worked to a budget not all that different to the one that cited for the dismissals. What I find shameful, is that our community did not challenge that minister, for violating our sovereign district right. In our Westminster model of democracy

Short shrift? Not on shifts From / 10 Tsawwassen to Duke Point is 65 km, compared to 54 km from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay. A ferry worker’s shift includes two round trips and loading time. On the Duke Point run this meant at least eight and a half hours, “thus ensuring the crew at least one hour at double time

an elected member can only be removed by that member’s electoral district’s electorate. Our common laws hold sacred elected representatives. Only a trial, conviction, and incarceration for a crime keeps one from elected duties. If the School Act demands a balanced budget it is only correct that the minister fund the local trustees with the reasonable funds that are requisitioned. Recall that a past minister removed the taxation powers from our local elected trustees. There must be negotiating room left within the minister’s care to accommodate

all the local needs across the province. If that is not the case then it is the criminal negligence, or a deliberate ideological intention of the minister to short change our children’s educational need. I see it as a tax theft from our collective B.C. communitiess’ needs. A theft that appears to be applied to corporation’s profits exchanged for nothing to our population’s benefit. Why is not the minister in jail? Dee Shoolingin, Duncan

Hidden agenda in fed budget To the Editor, This week MP

James Lunney voted in favour of a 400page budget bill that amends more than 70 different acts and devotes an astonishing 150 pages to weakening laws to protect our environment. The Conservatives claim that this “streamlining” of environmental legislation is so important that it has to be passed right away. So why didn’t we hear about it until now? Why didn’t they campaign on it in the last election? And why are the Conservatives ramming all these changes through Parliament and refusing to break up the mammoth bill so

that all its parts can be properly studied? The Conservatives are trying to avoid public scrutiny by cramming major environmental changes into a sweeping “kitchen sink” bill. All of this comes on top of 900 cuts at Environment Canada. Mr. Lunney and the Conservatives didn’t campaign on gutting environmental regulations, yet they are trying to pass them under the radar. Mr. Lunney needs to come clean to his constituents about this hidden agenda of environmental destruction. Kirsty Duncan, Liberal Critic for the Environment

Auditorium has always been gathering place To the Editor, The proponents of the idea of buying the Alberni Valley Bulldogs junior hockey team suggest that the AV Multiplex is a vital community centre, a gathering place. However, that function for decades has been fulfilled by the Alberni District

Secondary School Auditorium, a fact underlined to me by the last Timbre concert of the season. In addition to an assembly hall for students, their drama and musical events, the auditorium has been the site of Remembrance Day occasions, town hall

meetings on a variety of issues, appearances of international figures such as Stephen Lewis, and performances by the Vancouver Symphony, Chinese acrobats, the Vancouver Arts Club, Andre Phllipe Gagnon, Moe Kaufman, Peter Appleyard, Liona

Boyd, Frank Mills and the list goes on and on. It would be sheer madness to tear down such a fine multimillion dollar facility. Indeed if the “buy the Bulldogs” campaign fails to reach its financial target, perhaps the money raised could

go toward putting in a new heating system for the auditorium and making other necessary improvements. If it goes, this community will never be the same and much will have been lost forever. Richard Berg, Port Alberni

What is truth? How can we know the way that leads to eternal life? “These are the most important questions that mankind has ever asked. A disciple asked Jesus, “How can we know the way?” Jesus answer to him was, “I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE.” Jesus didn’t just teach the truth, He was the truth. He said, “This is life eternal that they might know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” We were reminded last Easter weekend that very religious people, who knew the scriptures and thought they knew God, rejected “the way, the truth, and the life” even as He stood right before their eyes. This is a serious warning to all of us. We must never be satisfied with knowing about Jesus, but we must personally respond to Him, draw close to Him, and truly learn to know Him.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

New hockey tourney honours fallen player

PHOTO SUBMITTED

The Alberni Valley Minor Hockey Association is promoting the Bryan Mason Memorial Cup (Mason Cup), which will be held for the first time during the 2012-13 season at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. Mason was an avid minor hockey player who was killed in a crash in Victoria in March 2011 when the vehicle he was driving hit a power pole on Gorge Road. Mason was 20 years old. The tournament is the concept of Marc Duquette, whose son Chase was a close friend and teammate of Mason’s throughout most of

AVMHA their AVMHA seasons. League president Al McCulloch as well as Mason’s parents is supporting this tourney. The intention of the tourney is to promote sportsmanship and safe play on and off the ice, Duquette said in a press release. Any AVMHA recreational team, atom through midget levels, can request to hold the Mason Cup for the upcoming season. Only one Mason Cup can be held each season. The successful applicant will receive at least $250 to offset

the cost of hosting the tournament. Duquette’s business, TECworks Information Systems, will fund the tournament. Both the hosting and winning teams will have an engraved plaque on the perpetual Mason Cup trophy, which will be displayed in the AVMHA showcase at the Multiplex. The winning team will also receive a smaller keeper trophy of their own. For more information on the tournament, please co online to masoncup.ca or contact Duquette at 250-730-1641 or info@ masoncup.ca.

Sleepy bears awaken CHRISTINA BRACK SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Warmer weather has arrived and is a welcome change from the chilly damp days of winter. While this change in temperature and longer days brings on the growing season, springtime also signals the end of hibernation for bears and a marked increase in their activity. Upon waking and exiting its den, a bear’s body mass is significantly lower than when it entered hibernation in the winter, but not as low as you may think. During hibernation bears do not eat or drink, nor do they pass any wastes. Their heart rate drops dramatically and kidney function stops all together. Muscle and fat provide

sustenance while waste by-products are recycled into new protein—hence why bears are not emaciated when they emerge. However, this is not to say that they are not hungry. In the wild, bears will seek winter-killed carrion and new shoots on spring plants. Unfortunately, they will also follow their noses to particularly tempting urban areas. This is a crucial time of year to deter and prevent bears from becoming conditioned to nonnatural food sources. One accessible garbage can, bird feeder or barbecue could spell continued problems for the rest of the year for humans and bears. Consideration must also be taken for future generations of

bears. Females will most likely be exiting their dens with cubs that will be learning all of their mother’s behaviours and habits including where and how to forage for food. These young bears will learn quickly and natural, wild behaviour is the goal rather than generations of urban food-conditioned bears. We all carry a responsibility to ensure healthy, wild populations of bears for years to come. Pro-active measures now will be reflected in fewer humanbear conflicts in the months ahead including reduced property damage, increase to public safety and a decrease destruction of bears. These measures include properly managing attractants on your

property, reporting neighbourhood bear sightings to the Conservation Officer Service, alerting neighbours to bear activity and maintaining a healthy attitude that these are wild animals that deserve our respect. To report any wildlife-human interactions where public safety may be at risk, call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952RAPP (7277). For more info, questions, concerns or to volunteer please call Dawn Boyce at 250-723-2187 or Christina Brack at 250-723-9200. Information provided by Christina Brack, director of communications and Crystal McMillan, executive director of Bear Smart BC.

ARTS DISTRICT: | Char’s Landing joins Door Jam project with double dose of colour.

SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Char’s Landing has unveiled the second Rotary Arts District Door Jam offering. Owner Charlene Patterson ripped down the covering on the double doors at the former church’s entrance on Tuesday afternoon. The Door Jam is part of the Rotary Arts District Street Task Force’s mission to beautify Argyle Street from the Rollin Art Centre at Eighth Avenue down to Harbour Quay. Gale Cyr, a member of the Alberni Valley Wednesday Painters, who meet at Char’s Landing, painted the doors for Char’s Landing. The bright coloured doors represent an amalgamation of Patterson’s vision and Cyr’s non-objective painting style, Cyr said. “Char’s vision was bright colours and something that could be seen from a distance and invite people, Cyr

explained. Char’s Landing is a multi-purpose venue that celebrates arts, music, meetings and physical fitness, and Cyr said the painted doors were a good fit. Cyr was able to take the doors home to her own studio, where her husband Joe scraped, filled and sanded the doors before helping her apply two coats of primer to make it easier to paint. Sixteen businesses

have signed on for the R.A.D. Door Jam, R.A.D. volunteer and artist Dorothy Jarvis said. They will be paired with local artists for their own Door Jams. The first door was unveiled at a home on Fifth Avenue, within sight of Char’s Landing. Eventually, the work of 25 artists will be featured in the arts district, Jarvis said. Each door will have a plaque proclaiming

the artist whose work is displayed. Jarvis and the rest of the R.A.D. street task force hope the painted doors and banners will attract more people to the arts district. Gayle StephenPlayer, president of Historic Southport merchants’ group, was on hand for the unveiling. “This is something positive for Port, she said. editor@albernivalleynews.com

West coast goes ‘Wild!’ AMYAH LABRĂˆCHE SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

From her soon-to-bepublished fifth book My Secret Sasquatch (& other possibilities) to her Wild! exhibit of photographs at the Rollin Arts Centre (May 11 to June 9), Jacqueline Windh is an JACQUELINE excepWINDH tional woman who lives two passions. Sciences and arts both fascinated Windh in her childhood. Sciences first won as she received her B.Sc. (Honours) in geology from McGill University in 1987, and her Ph.D. from the University of Western Australia in 1992. For more than a decade, Windh worked as a geological consultant to the mining industry in Canada, Australia, Chile, Argentina and Peru. But her second passion, latent in her heart, popped out in 2000. She left the

In 2004 she published her first book, The Wild Edge, filled with breathtaking photos of the West Coast. The Wild Edge soon became a Canadian bestseller. Since then, she has written or co-written three more books:

The Wild Side Guide to Vancouver Island’s Pacific Rim; First Nations of the Pacific Northwest: Change and Tradition and Hai kur mamashu shis (a collection of traditional tales from the Yagan people of Patagonia). My Secret Sasquatch (& other possibilities), a compilation of stories and essays, will be on the market hopefully in spring 2013. Besides her books, Windh has been exhibiting her photographic work

in galleries and museums from Tofino to Vancouver to Muenster in Germany and her photos appear in magazines and newspapers around the world. One of her stories, The Night the Floor Jumped, is on the short list for the Vanderbilt-Exile Short Fiction 2012 Competition.
