3 Facts You Need To Know About... More jobs in BC in April 1.
2.
3.
More British Columbians benefited from jobs in April, as BC’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.2 per from seven per cent in March. That’s an increase of 19,700 jobs – 16,700 of which are full time positions. Strong gains were recorded in forestry, fishing, mining and gas extraction, manufacturing, trade and transportation and warehousing. April’s gains have more than made up for March’s losses in these same industries. Since February 2011, BC has added 57,900 jobs to the economy, benefiting families all across the province. Compared to this time last year, BC’s unemployment rate is 1.6 % lower placing BC as the 4th lowest unemployment rate in Canada. Our government made a commitment to create jobs for families under the BC Jobs Plan and that commitment is paying off!

address the concerns of business owners. “As you know, Cranbrook has had a rash of break and enters throughout the city within the last few months. Police are aware of the concerns you as business owners have and I can assure you that we are doing what we can to try and prevent future break and enters. To date, it appears that there is more than one person is responsible for the break and enters. The methods of entering the businesses have varied, but the consistent target has been cash. Our of¿ce has conducted surveillance on persons of interest, made patrols in unmarked police vehicles, and have had bike patrols in order to catch the person(s) responsible in the act. Citizens on Patrol are aware of the increase of the break and enters and always keep an eye out for suspicious activity when conducting patrols of the city. There has been blood seized, ¿ngerprints found, and foot impressions have been left behind at various businesses. The evidence seized is analyzed in order to identify the suspects. There are a few businesses that have caught a suspect on video, however the suspect has been covered which makes identifying them harder. The Cranbrook RCMP has dedicated the resources of the General Investigation Section (GIS) to identify and charge the person or persons responsible. You can direct any questions or concerns you may have regarding the break and enters to me, Cst. Renee Dzilums, at (250)4893471.” It is believed that there is knowledge in the community as to who the perpetrators(s) are in these crimes and ask that they call the Cranbrook RCMP or Crimestoppers. Crimestoppers offers cash rewards for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of these persons. Cranbrook RCMP (250)489-3471 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477). You can also Google “Cranbrook Crimestoppers” and leave a webtip.

Letters to future selves Dear future self. I think DARE is one amazing subject thanks to it I know all about drugs and what they do to your body. They say smoking can make you look cool but if you really know what was in store for you you wouldn’t even think of them so it is very important to stay drug free. DARE has taught me to be con¿dent and sure of myself. When people are smoking it smells awful and they don’t look so good either. Being drug free is important because more than 45,000 die in Canada from smoking. I don’t think I will be on drugs by the time I get this letter because I only want to work with horses and if smoking makes it hard to be active then I could never accomplish my dream. I have learned to say “NO: during peer pressure. I pledge to not do drugs no matter what! by Victoria O.
kills nearly 45,000 Canadians each year. Drugs can also make you go crazy and don’t forget marijuana is illegal in Canada. Drugs and smokes can kill you. Now I don’t want to die young do I? So Curtis don’t do anything bad. In the future I would like to be a hockey player and not live on the streets begging for money that would ruin my chance of being a
hockey player. I pledge I will never do anything bad like smoke cigarettes or smoke marijuana or even do drugs. I will always remember constable Lisa and how she has taught me to say no to drugs and to just walk away if I’m ever asked to do drugs I will always remember to say no life is to precious to be ruined by drugs. For most Canadians, the Victoria Day long weekend marks the beginning of the summer season. This means camping, BBQs and outdoor fun. For gardeners, this is the unofficial start to the outdoor growing season as this is the time when one can be fairly certain that frost will not return until the fall. Of course, Victoria Day is the day to commemorate the birthday of Queen Victoria and the official birthday for Canada’s current sovereign, Victoria’s great-great-granddaughter Elizabeth II. Many plants are in fact named in honour of members of royalty. Most of the current members of the British royal family have a rose named in their honour. There is the ‘Queen Elizabeth Rose’, a beautiful grandiflora variety introduced in 1954 that has earned many awards over the years. It is still one of the top ten roses and a favourite with rose breeders all over the world. The ‘Queen Elizabeth Rose’ sports large-sized, pink double blooms with dark-green, glossy foliage. Newer additions to the royal rose family are ‘Royal William’ and ‘Royal Kate’ - both are being introduced this year. They are extremely disease-resistant and hardy to Zone 5. ‘Royal Kate’ boasts masses of fragrant, pink blooms. They are perched on strong stems, making them ideal for bouquets. The blooms of the ‘Royal William’ are deep red and classically formed. The rose that is named in his father’s honour is also a deep, vibrant red. The ‘Prince Charles Rose’ has loosely-formed double blooms with a strong fragrance. There is also a juniper ‘Prince of Wales’ that you might say is well matched to Charles’ more robust personality. This is a dependable groundcover shrub, noted for its winter foliage which turns a bronzy purple, a welcome seasonal variation. This juniper is especially graceful when draped off retaining walls or along streets, driveways, sidewalks or paths. Whereas her status as a member of the royal family was questionable in the end, Lady Diana Spencer also has two plants named after her. The ‘Lady Diana Rose’ is a soft, dreamy pink with a mild fragrance. It blooms in flushes throughout the season in small clusters and it also produces very decorative hips in the fall. The ‘Princess Diana Clematis’ demands attention with classy, tulip-shaped blooms that are a rich pink with blush pink edges. It is a steady bloomer from mid-summer into early fall. Whereas there is no plant directly named for Queen Victoria herself, it is said she fancied the Geranium ‘Apple Blossom’ with its soft, palepink flowers and prominent dark pink veins. The violet with its sweet scent is also reported to have been a favourite. Her wedding bouquet consisted only of snowdrops which were the favourite flower of her husband, Prince Albert. Whichever royal favour you have picked out for your yard, enjoy the Victoria Day long weekend. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Tara

Residents are encouraged to exercise both caution and common sense this spring, as the fawning season approaches for deer, according to the City of Cranbrook. Late May through June is historically the time of year does give birth to their fawns. Does will drive away their offspring from the previous year and look for a secluded place to give birth. Deer have one or two fawns per year and triplets do occur once in a while. The white-spotted fawn relies on its colouration, lack of scent and silence for protection. It is quite common for does to leave fawns hidden while they forage in the area, returning occasionally to nurse. If you come across a fawn, it is best to leave it alone. It is also important for residents to remember that does with fawns can be quite aggressive. “Please do not approach deer or their fawns,” says Mayor Wayne Stetski. “Does may have their fawns in secluded backyards, so property owners should be vigilant. If your presence creates a response from the deer, like a change in stance, ear position or physical movement, you are too close.” Give the deer plenty of space to either move or leave the area. Do not walk closer to the deer, choose another route. Be sure to walk your dog on a leash and be ready to let go of the leash if a deer attacks. The City of Cranbrook has an information brochure, “Living with Urban Deer”, which is available for pick up at City Hall or by downloading a copy from the City’s website – www. cranbrook.ca. Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. The campaign is part of the Liquor Distribution Branch’s corporate social responsibility program to promote the responsible use of alcohol beverages – a program that includes the prevention of underage drinking and promotion of zero consumption for minors. These funds will help local high school Dry Grad committees plan alcohol-free graduation events and activities such as boat cruises, ski trips and dances. The contributions by liquor store customers supplement funds raised by parents, students and teachers who volunteer year-round to raise funds for dry grads. From February 25 to March 31, BC Liquor Store customers throughout the province were asked if they would like to support dry grad celebrations in their communities by donating one dollar. This year, 55 school districts participated in the campaign. One hundred per cent of the donations collected are distributed to high schools hosting dry grad events. compete in the Alberta Volleyball Association league against other club programs from Alberta. The Servathon idea was created by EKVC President Steve Kamps. “With the size of our club and the community support we have received we felt it was time to give back to a special cause” commented Kamps. Each registered EKVC athlete had the opportunity to collect pledges for completed serves (25 attempts) at the Ser-
vathon event. Half of the proceeds were donated to the Clear View Campaign and the other half was used to cover the travel expenses for the athlete’s attending the Alberta Provincial Championships. On behalf of the EKVC I would like to thank the community for the pledges to support this fundraising campaign. A special thanks also to the EKVC’s major sponsors, Teck Cominco and East Kootenay Credit Union whose support provides a reduction in fees for the athletes.
East Kootenay Foundation for Health is privileged to receive support from the East Kootenay Volleyball Club and is ecstatic with the results. The next time your door bell rings and there is an athlete or student doing fundraising at your door, take a second to learn the dedication they are putting back into their community. Sincere thanks to Steve Kamps for bringing this fun and different fundraiser in support of the digital mammography campaign.

What services should I expect with new hearing aids? For most people, the experience of getting hearing aids for the first time can be very stressful. Finding the right hearing professional is the single most important step. A hearing evaluation from a certified and registered Audiologist will confirm whether you are a candidate for hearing aids. A qualified professional can provide the foundation for the transition to being a successful hearing aid wearer. A hearing aid is an investment that will not only improve your quality of life but will improve the lives of people that are close to you. A hearing aid that is properly programmed and precision fit by an experienced Audiologist can increase communication and decrease frustration in your life. Importantly, with any new hearing aid purchase there should be a level of service that is included. As is common in the hearing aid industry, this added service ‘package’ will typically include a trial period, a repair and loss and damage warranty, and unlimited follow up appointments as required. The service package can vary from region to region, so it is important to ensure that you are getting a wide range of services and the best value for your investment. Dynamic Hearing Solutions (DHS) offers the best service and value guarantee in the industry. DHS’ Service Value Promise focuses on ensuring long term benefit and 100% satisfaction with hearing aids. DHS professional and front staff work hard to deliver this promise and to ensure our patients’ specific needs are met. What is included in Dynamic Hearing Solutions Service Value Promise? Complete hearing evaluations Using state of the art equipment, our professional staff perform diagnostic testing to determine your exact hearing levels, and explain the results in an easy to understand manner. Results are explained in the context of where a person is having difficulty. Recommendations are made based on both the test results and the needs of the individual. The net result is a tailor made hearing solution based on the individual’s specific needs. Our diagnostic test fee is waived for folks over the age of 65. Precision fit Hearing aids & assistive devices Our goal is to ensure that hearing aids are comfortable and perform optimally based on your individual hearing needs. For this reason, our state of the art facility uses only the most advanced equipment available to properly fit and assess hearing aids and other assistive listening devices. Dynamic Hearing Solutions approved technology To ensure high quality standards and optimal hearing solutions, we have carefully selected a wide range of high quality manufacturers and products that will cover the range of hearing difficulties experienced. This allows us to have greater flexibility in the recommendation and selection process, and to more precisely custom fit the hearing system that is right for you and your individual needs. 90 day risk free trial period Our 90 day risk free evaluation/trial period is one of the longest in the industry. Our goal during this period is to work hard to ensure that you are satisfied with your new hearing aids. If during this time, you are not completely satisfied with the hearing aids, or any aspect of our service value promise, then you can return the hearing aids for a refund. It is important for you to be involved during this period and that is why we ask for your perseverance, patience and to let us know when you are having problems. Our commitment during this time and beyond, is to see you back as often as is necessary to make sure that the hearing aids are meeting your needs. 2 year repair & 1 year loss warranty Our comprehensive warranty will cover you for any manufacturer repair costs that may be incurred during the first two years and for loss in the first year. This gives you solid peace of mind as you acclimatize to wearing new hearing aids. Further, our onsite repair lab ensures that the majority of repairs can be done onsite the same day, at no additional cost to you. Our professionals can service all major makes and models of hearing aids available. Unlimited programming adjustments and follow up Following the fitting of new hearing aids, we will schedule regular follow
up appointments based on your individual needs. This will ensure that any concerns that arise in the first few weeks are addressed and will help to reduce the stress and anxiety that may be involved in adjusting to new hearing aids. Often issues arise in the first few hours or days following the initial fitting. In order to address immediate concerns that arise prior to your first follow up appointment, we will follow up with you by phone within 24 hours of a new fitting. As an integral part of our service and value promise, Dynamic Hearing Solutions includes an unlimited number of visits for the life of the hearing aids beyond the initial fitting and trial period. This includes, all clean and checks, reprogramming, fit adjustments, and retesting of your hearing at no additional cost. Appointments within 4 days of contact One of our main goals is to ensure that you do not experience a lengthy wait for services. We want to see you as soon as possible, whether for new bookings or for regular follow up. At all of our locations, we strive to see patients within 4 days of calling in for an appointment. This component of our service value promise is critical, as lengthy wait times can add to frustration and stress, particularly if your hearing is diminished and communication with loved ones is affected. Once in the clinic, our goal is to ensure that you are seen on time for your appointment and that your wait time no longer than 5 minutes. Comfortable & relaxed environment, easy convenient accessibility. All of our locations are conveniently located at ground level with easy access. All locations are close to pharmacies and are located near or within medical centres. In addition, our warm comfortable clinic environments and exceptional front staff make the experience more pleasant and relaxing. Whether on the phone or in person, our Kootenay born and raised senior care coordinator Renee Phillips is there to make sure your needs are met. WCB & Veterans Authorized provider As a regulated provider, we are proud to serve the needs of clients with WCB (Worksafe) and Veteran’s affairs Canada. We are authorized to accept new claims, and work with patients who have existing claims. We are able to provide assistance in the generation of new claims and can advise you as to whether you are a candidate for a claim based on a history of industrial or military noise exposure. 100% locally owned and operated. Dynamic Hearing Solutions was established to serve the needs of people in the local region. Our locations in Nelson, Cranbrook, and Fernie are owned and operated exclusively in the Kootenays. We believe in supporting local businesses and keeping our local economy vibrant. As a ‘mom and pop’ business, we have worked hard to provide an unsurpassed level of personalized service with access to the widest range of hearing aid technology with the best service value available. Because we are locally owned and focused on just the Kootenay region, our operating costs are lower and we are proud to pass these savings on to our patients. For more information on our value promise and our 90 day risk free trial period, please visit our website at www. dynamichearingsolutions.ca. To determine how hearing aids can improve your quality of life and learn more about new options available, call Dynamic Hearing solutions at 1-877-426-0079 or visit us at one of our locations in Nelson, Cranbrook, or Fernie. Ministry declares open fire prohibition for Victoria Day weekend Submitted
Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources staff will team up with RCMP of¿cers and other provincial of¿cials in the Lake Koocanusa area May 17-21, to enforce an Open Fire Prohibition Order and help residents and visitors enjoy a safe and peaceful long weekend. The Lake Koocanusa shoreline and nearby areas in the East Kootenay region attract many B.C. and Alberta visitors each year. The number of campers over the 2011 Victoria Day long weekend was estimated at 3,000 to 5,000. “Communities in the East Kootenay region welcome visitors from all over the world, and those tourists play an important role in the area’s economy. The enforcement efforts planned for the May long weekend will help discourage unruly behaviour and promote a fun and safe atmosphere for residents and visitors alike,” said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. The stepped-up enforcement campaign is partly in response to disorderly activity that
occurred in the popular recreational area during the 2011 Victoria
Day long weekend, when public and private property was dam-
aged and several people were seriously injured. An Open Fire Pro-
hibition - restricting camp¿res and Category 2 and Category 3 open
¿res - will be in effect from noon on Thursday, May 17, 2012 to noon
on Monday, May 21, see Prohibition page 18

Submitted With bears seeking out non-natural food sources, Environment Minister Terry Lake is spreading the word to British Columbians to do what they can to control bear attractants and reduce conÀicts with bears. The main cause of human-wildlife conÀicts in B.C. is access to nonnatural food sources. Bears that learn how to get at exposed pet food, ripe fruit, improperly stored garbage, dirty barbecues or composts become conditioned and will continue to return to the area. British Columbians are encouraged to prevent human-bear conÀicts by adopting the following practices: * Keep garbage secured in a bear-resistant container or in the house, garage or shed until pick-up day and return the containers to the secure site once they are emptied. * Pick ripe and fallen fruit daily and remove any unused fruit trees. * Use bird feeders only in winter. * Keep the ground free of seeds and nuts. * Clean the barbecue grill after each use, and store it in a secure area. * Bring pet food dishes inside and store the pet food inside. * Do not add meat products or uncooked food to compost. Turn it regularly and keep it covered. * If residents spot a bear, they are advised to remain calm, keep away from the bear and bring children and pets indoors, if possible. * People should never approach a bear and should not run from it, as bears can move very quickly. * Once a bear has left the area, residents should check their yards to ensure no attractants are available. The public is encouraged to report humanwildlife conÀicts that threaten public safety or result in signi¿cant property damage by calling the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line, tollfree at 1 877 952-7277 (RAPP), or visit the RAPP website at: www. rapp.bc.ca More information about how to be Bear Aware can be found at: www.bearaware.bc.ca.
COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES
COTR Awards Ceremony The College of the Rockies Awards Ceremony was held on April 11, and provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our students. Recipients received 105 scholarships, bursaries and awards valued at more than $100,000. This is, in part, thanks to Columbia Basin Trust who have renewed their commitment of 10 awards worth $2,000 each (or $20,000), for the next 3 years, to students with extraordinary community service or volunteerism. We would also like to recognize the Rotary Club of Cranbrook who have donated an additional $8,000 for 4 awards this year to Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Human Service Worker and Education Assistant students. We’re also introducing some new awards this year. The Isaiah Otieno Memorial Bursary, which is being awarded to an international student, the Brian Pagnucco Computer Technology Award for a top student in the Computer and Web Specialist or Network Support Technician program, and the Velma McKay Memorial Bursary for a student enrolled at College of the Rockies and continuing their education in the fall at College of the Rockies. Both Brian and Velma were long-term employees at College of the Rockies, while Isaiah was a student here. Unfortunately, they all passed away during their time at the College. These three new awards were primarily funded by donations from staff, students and the College itself. We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Salviulo Family who have raised more than $50,000 to create a scholarship in memory of their son Brandon, who wanted to take the Fire Services Training program. The Salviulo family has created this award to help a Fire Training student in need to enter the program. We will be offering a $1,000 entrance award for the fall program.
