Changes to the family fishing program at McGuire Lake are designed to protect the painted turtles that share the habitat. As well as providing basking areas, extending the dock farther from shore and posting signs with regulations and educational material, a monitor will be hired to keep an eye on the program. fishery biologist with the Fish and Wildlife Branch of the Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations, says several steps have been taken to prevent painted turtles from being hooked. Last year’s program, the first family fishing program in McGuire Lake, ended in controversy with charges that many of the resident painted turtles had been hooked. Maricle, who oversees some 20 to 30 popular fish-

ing lakes in the province – including White Lake, says he has never heard of the turtles being hooked before. “It was close to the end of the year that we heard the complaints, and we never got a clear idea about the number of hookings or severity,” Maricle says. “We agreed we needed to take a closer look to address the issue and we wanted to have a clear understanding if mitigative efforts would eliminate turtle hookings.”

Maricle met with the other local Family Fishing partners, including the City of Salmon Arm, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and local Fish and Game clubs, to discuss the issue and find solutions. To that end, the city agreed to post signs listing fishing regulations and educational information on the ecology of the painted turtle. Added to last year’s rule that only barbless hooks be used is a ban on using bait

to make sure the omnivorous turtles are not attracted to the hooks. Maricle says the city talked about setting out basking platforms near the inlet. “I think it’s an important part of their ecology, especially when the water is cold,” he says. “It’s nice to get out of the cold water and get the sun. They’re cold-blooded so digestion is entirely dependent on temperature.” See Changes on page 2

Continued from front Not only will the dock be extended farther away from the shoreline, an area turtles prefer, the shore end of the dock will be marked as a no-fishing area. “The turtles tend to gravitate to the shoreline especially when there’s floating stuff,” Maricle says, noting officials had no data to show how many turtles were harmed last year. “We don’t know how many were hooked or what the mortality was.” What they do know is that tests taken in February revealed good levels of oxygen and that trout survived the winter. Between the ministry and the city, $6,000 has been secured to hire a monitor who will sit at the dock and watch the fishery. The monitor will be on-site four hours per day, three days per week, as early as the

A teenager remains in hospital after apparently slipping off a trail above Gleneden Falls and plunging approximately 60 feet to land on rocks underneath the falls. The unnamed girl, who appeared to be about 18 years old, was walking along an upper trail with a friend at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 11 when she fell.

“It appears she just lost her footing and went over the edge,” says Cpl. Luiz Sardinha of the Salmon Arm RCMP. “She ended up on the rocks under the falls with the water landing on her. It was fortunate there were some rock climbers and hikers with first-aid training right there.” BC Ambulance confirms the call and says due to the obvious seriousness of the teen’s condition, a medi-vac

helicopter from Kamloops was dispatched immediately. Shuswap Search and Rescue were also called in to assist. “It was great to see how everyone came to help. The climbers, neighbours from the area, search and rescue. And the helicopter was so fast. By the time the paramedics had her halfway down the trail, the helicopter was waiting in the parking lot,” says Sardinha.

Fire escapes slash piles Deyhydration Regulations: Compliance with act being investigated. By Barb Brouwer MARKET NEWS STAFF

Natural resource officers with the Wildfire Management Branch of the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources are investigating whether an escaped slash burn met the conditions required under the province’s Wildfire Act. Ranchero firefighters and Rapattack responded to an escaped fire at the top of Black Road near Lidstone Road early Tuesday afternoon. Embers from two large slash piles sparked other spot fires within an area being cleared for development. “They are required to have a burning reference number and it’s questionable,” says Wildfire Management Branch fire protection officer Kirk Hughes, noting that while the operator of the slash burn did have a reference nuber it was not neccessarily valid for this particular time of year. Structural firefighters from the Ranchero Firehall did a great job knocking the fire down and prevented it from spreading farther, says Hughes, who brought

in a three-person initial attack crew from the Rapattack centre near the Salmon Arm Airport. “Ranchero firefighters took the threat out of it and the three-person initial attack crew stayed to make sure the fire was extinguished.” Hughes says Ranchero firefighters responded because the property in question is within the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s fire protection area. However, he says, the situation is complicated by the fact the regional district does not have a bylaw that regulates open burning, so open burning of this nature is legislated under the province’s Wildfire Act and regulations. Whether the operator of the slash burn met the regulations is also part of the current investigation. “They had one piece of heavy equipment and one operator so we’re investigating,” he says of the two slash piles that measured greater than five metres by five metres and are considered to be Category 3 fires under the act. “The piles were ignited and got beyond

the area of where they were supposed to burn, but didn’t burn any forest lands,” says Hughes, who notes the 2012 wildfire season has begun and people need to take the necessary precautions. “Things are noticeably starting to dry out,” he says. “When people are gonna burn, they need to understand the requirements of the law and be prepared in the event they have a fire escape.” Hughes reminds residents there is the potential for “administrative penalties,” including fines, under the Wildfire Management Act. As well, he notes, changes in regulations

mean the Wildfire Management Branch no longer bases fire prohibitions on weather. “We have defaulted to a date-driven scenario,” he says, pointing out that as of June 15, category two and three pile burning, fireworks and burn barrels will be prohibited. The only fires permitted after June 15 will be campfires that are no bigger than half a metre by half a metre. And they too could be curtailed by the Wildfire Management Branch if conditions warrant it. For information on wildfires in the province, visit www. bcwildfire.ca.

For a suggested donation of $75, you could have a fabulous day on the water and ease the burden on a young man and his mother. Fifteen-year-old King’s Christian student Richard Smith has been unable to attend classes since November 2011 when he was diagnosed with langerhans cell hystiocytosis, a cancer-like disease that affects pituitary glands, ribs, hormones and all other glands in his body. He is on 12 different medications and is undergoing 52 weeks of chemotherapy. “His daily life has been affected drastically because he is unable to enjoy any regular activity,” says his mom Jayne, a single mother who is struggling financially to meet the needs of her son and a daughter. Residents can help the Smiths by taking a Sunday cruise May 27

on a houseboat provided by Georgina Kyllo of Twin Anchors. For a suggested minimum donation of $75, cruisers are asked to meet at the Salmon Arm dock/wharf no later than 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. departure. The boat will cruise across the lake to Reinecker Creek, where participants will hike the Reinecker Creek short loop. Yoga will follow either on the houseboat or at Herald Park. Breakfast, snacks and lunch will be provided by the Shuswap Pie Company. Live music will be provided by Jordan Dick and fellow musicians. This is a one-way sail only with participants needing to arrange a ride back to Salmon Arm (unless organizers can find someone to donate a bus ride back to town.) Organizers will use a small portion of the funds raised to cover some food costs. The

What’s in a name anyway? Marc Dalton, Maple Ridge-Mission MLA, thinks his party, the B.C. Liberals, should change its name. He says the name – in place since the provincial Liberals formed in 1991 (and the one voters have elected to govern three consecutive terms) – is confusing to some centre-right voters, now that the B.C. Conservatives have surged to solid third-party status. He says those who are federal Conservatives will have a hard time voting B.C. Liberal next time. Last month, the NDP won two B.C. byelections, in Chilliwack-Hope and Port Moody-Coquitlam. The Liberals came second in both, the Conservatives third. The Liberals fear more vote splitting in the May 2013 provincial election. But changing the party’s name won’t prevent that. Doing so would seem even more confusing to voters, which may be the point. It’s easy to see why the Liberals would want to rebrand the party, distance itself from past scandals and failures, and try to reverse falling popularity. But whatever the Liberals come up with – the B.C. Alliance Party is being floated about – it’s still the same cast of characters who brought you the B.C. Rail and HST fiascoes. Whether or not Kevin Falcon and other cabinet ministers run again isn’t going to change that. And changing the party’s name, to something more progressive, won’t erase the past, or fool many. B.C. doesn’t need a new centre-right party – it already has two. The B.C. Conservatives beat the Liberals to the punch. Trying to decide between the two is what’s confusing. Are the Liberals about families or business? A tiger can’t change its stripes. Changing the party’s name is just painting over them. As long as the B.C. Conservatives are around, the right will be split. And that’s what the NDP is counting on. – Black Press

Understanding the writer’s itch A few weeks ago I was in a used book store on Vancouver Island and found a book written by someone that I considered both a friend and a mentor. Bob Jones wrote about fishing and the outdoors. He passed away several years ago. Somewhere along the line, he once said that if he ever won it big in the lottery, he would still keep writing because, as he put it, “writing is a compulsion, a subconscious itch scratched only by putting words onto paper. However, with the sudden disappearance of that annoying necessity called ‘having to earn a living’ there would be an immediate reversal in the amount of time I would spend working versus fishing.” In his story entitled If I Were A Rich Man, Jones admitted that “whenever a few dollars accumulates in my bank account, it is hastily converted into something useful – most often a new addition to my angling library, a fly line, a rod or on the off-chance that enough dollars were ever to accumulate, perhaps a pair of

THE GREAT OUTDOORS James Murray waders to replace the patched-on-patches pair that cause me so much embarrassment whenever I have wear to them.” He also once said that, should he receive such a windfall, he would surely fulfill a lifelong dream of fishing from one side of Canada to the other, “thereby ensuring the even distribution of his wealth among deserving tackle-shop operators, guiding services and fishing lodges.” That particular dream was, indeed, fulfilled with the publishing of his book Fly Fishing Canada _ From Coast to Coast to Coast, which Jones edited for Outdoor Writers of Canada. He continues to share that dream with the many people

who have read his 528-page anthology. I know I have spent many a winter evening sitting by the fireplace reading his book. I remember sitting with Jones one time in a pub near the Vedder River and talking about the possibility of him putting together a similar anthology of short anecdotal/humorous stories written by a number of outdoor writers and storytellers. I should, perhaps, mention that it was Bob Jones who sponsored me into the Outdoor Writers of Canada. For some reason, as he put it, he liked my style. I was honoured. I still am. I know I always liked his style. In one of his books, entitled Warped Rods and Squeaky Reels, Jones recalls the time he met an outdoor writer by the name of Homer Circle, who just so happened to be the resident fishing guru of Sports Afield magazine, at an Outdoor Writers Association annual convention. Jones wrote that Circle glanced at his name tag, smiled, and stuck out his hand. “I assumed he remem-

bered me from the two previous conventions we had both attended. As he clasped my hand he said that he was a real fan of my work. Flabbergasted doesn’t begin to describe my feeling. One of North America’s best known outdoor writers a fan of my work. Wow. Thank you, I said.” “I haven’t had a chance yet to get downstairs to see the display” commented Circle. “Are you showing some of your paintings?” “Paintings,” I said. “Oh, aren’t you Bob Jones the painter from Delaware?” “No, I’m Bob Jones the outdoor writer from Vancouver Island.” “Oh, I’m sorry. What sort of stuff do you write?” I for one know what kind of stuff he wrote. To this day, Jones continues to influence my writing. He was a true wordsmith with an impeccable sense of timing. He knew just when and how to set the hook – in more ways than one. I guess you could say that Bob Jones gave me a subconscious itch that can only be scratched by putting words on paper.

Fisheries changes make waves SHUSWAP PASSION Jim Cooperman The list of those speaking out to oppose the current plan by the federal government to weaken the Fisheries Act through its massive omnibus budget bill grows daily. In addition to the fishing community, conservationists, former Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) directors and hundreds of scientists, the former conservative Minister of Fisheries, Tom Siddon, has now spoken out for the need to scrap the plans to gut this important law that helps protect fish habitat. If the bill is passed, the changes will have huge consequences throughout Canada, including the Shuswap. Within the bill are amendments that will change the focus of a section of the Fisheries Act from habitat protection to fisheries protection. The changes will

occur in two steps. Once the bill is passed, the prohibition against works that pose harm to fish habitat will be weakened to only apply to permanent alteration or destruction through an order of cabinet. As well, the amendments will expand the government’s ability to authorize harm to fish habitat or allow for pollution to occur and DFO staff will no longer be required to review proposed works. Essentially, it will be open season for industry to do whatever they want regardless of the impacts to fish habitat. There are DFO staff stationed in Salmon Arm and Kamloops that have played a key role in protecting and restoring salmon habitat through a wide variety of activities. Perhaps the greatest benefit to the community has been the efforts that DFO staff have made to help bring groups together to achieve significant results. For example, the Salmon River Roundtable has made great strides in rehabilitating riparian vegetation and improving farm practices, as well as improving understanding of the need to protect

fish habitat. Much of the work that the Salmon Arm DFO staff do is behind the scenes, including reviewing development plans, helping groups apply for funding to do restoration and mapping and restoring the foreshore of Shuswap and Mara Lakes. For situations where development has caused significant harm, such as the riparian clearing alongside the Eagle River near Old Town Bay, DFO was able to prosecute the offending developer. As a result, the developer was fined and had to fund the reclamation efforts. Another example of where DFO has protected key habitat is in the North Shuswap near Roderick HaigBrown Park where a developer began to fill in a lagoon that floods in the spring. Because this seasonal body of water provides habitat for salmon fry and other species, the developer had to remove the fill and now this area is protected, although the adjacent RV park residents remove the riparian trees and bushes to get a view of the lake. The federal government claims that under the existing legislation that was established in

1977, DFO has caused unnecessary delays to developers and has prevented development in floodplains and ditches, which they claim is not important habitat. However, in most cases the proponents, who have not provided the information needed in a timely manner, have caused the delays. And, for many parts of

Canada, especially the Shuswap, ditches and floodplains provide key rearing habitat for salmon. In addition to the legislative changes, DFO faced significant budget cuts last year and deeper cuts are planned for this year. Most of these cuts are to staff that work on habitat protection. It is entirely possible, that the local office of DFO could be closed and most of the jobs lost. The federal government’s primary

concern is to ease the restrictions on industrial development, particularly the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline that would cross over 800 streams and rivers. Most Shuswap residents support efforts to protect habitat for our iconic salmon. If we lose DFO, we will see threats to the viability of salmon increase. Environmental protection has long been the cornerstone of our democratic society, as most of us know that a healthy economy is dependent on a healthy environment. The plan to gut the fisheries act and weaken the environmental assessment process threatens our democracy and will, in the long term, weaken our economy.

Sorrento bunker hides grow op By Martha Wickett MARKET NEWS STAFF

Patrick Evanishen, Salmon Arm RCMP executed a search warrant in the 1400 block of Taylor where they seized 448 marijuana plants in various stages of growth.

Shuswap firefighters show their mettle With a time of three minutes, 24 seconds, the Shuswap Volunteer Fire Department broke the provincial course record on the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) challenge at the annual Spring Fire Training Seminar in Oliver. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re proud of them. It just goes to show how good the training is. Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation, the Shuswap Revelstoke branch of the Canadian Mental Health Associations is offering a free eight-week course called Living Life to the Full (LLTTF). “LLTTF is a skills-enhancing course based on cognitive behavioural principles (CBT) and is suitable for people who want to maximize their ability to deal with life’s challenges in a 12-hour, eight-week course,” says a CMHA press release. Two trained staff facilitators lead the licensed course, which is offered in a group format in onehour sessions and normally costs $150 per person. Activities are designed to engage participants at their comfort level, and inspire them to shift how they respond to stresses in their lives. People from all walks of life benefit from LLTTF: Parents, employers, people experiencing stress and change in their lives, individuals living with mental health issues, etc. For employers, this is a great wellness program for your staff. Whatever the reason, the skills covered in LLTTF can provide you with useful tools to enhance how you tackle life’s challenges. Get ready for a broncbusting good time. The 94th annual Falkland Stampede bursts out of the gate Saturday, with the action continuing until Victoria Day Monday. “It’s going to be one of our best ones ever,” said Ozzie Leaf, a longtime volunteer. “It’s a real family atmosphere and some people have been coming for 40 years.” There are 357 entries — the largest in a decade. “We’ve got a lot of Americans coming in and the bare back and bronc riding entries are up,” said Jason Churchill, stampede manager. “That’s really good for the rodeo fans.” Cowboys participate for a total prize purse of more than $45,000. The event generally draws upwards of 5,000 people over three days.

“It’s one of the oldest rodeos in Canada and it’s what people do on the May long weekend,” said Churchill. “The other attraction is we’re also a professional rodeo with topend cowboys. We put everything we can into the rodeo.” That means bringing in Northcott rodeo stock, the Crazy Cowgirls trick riders, announcer Les McIntyre and Dennis Halstead, the 2011 rodeo entertainer of the year. “Without the support of our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to do it,” said Churchill. Also critical is the army of volunteers behind the scenes, with most residents in the town of 500 lending a hand. “It’s a huge community effort,” said Churchill, adding that non-profit groups also run concession stands and other activities to fundraise. “Everything in the

town is basically funded by the rodeo.” The theme for this year’s stampede is a tribute to native cowboys. Rodeo action begins at 1 p.m. at the Highway 97 stampede grounds, while it starts at 2 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, there is a heavy horse pull at 10 a.m. and the rodeo at 1 p.m. There will also be a

kids’ calf scramble all three days and a cowboy church at 11 a.m. Sunday. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students and children under six are free. SPORTS Most parents great, a few not For the past few weeks I’ve written about the 99 per cent of parents who, most without being asked, will help out at their daughter or son’s game or practice without thinking twice about it. Anything for the children is how most feel. As our children become older the option for a more competitive and a higher commitment level begins. First the parent decides if they can drive all over the region to selected tournaments, which is usually expected during the soccer season. This Development or Select play usually ends up being for children who have an all-round high level of athleticism, or show a drive for a higher competitive level or, my favourite child, the one who may not be the most skilled but works hard at every practice and game to try to make the cut. Overall, most children still compete for the love of a game. There is then the unfortunate child who is asked to try and live out a dream of one or both of the parents without compromise or thought

Life is all about choices and parents always want the best for their children, but some at times may steer the child to an activity, hobby or sport that they once or still enjoy and assume their child must feel the same way. The other part of the ‘one per cent’ parent raised its ugly head this past weekend at the Little Mountain Sports Fields during a 12-yearold boy’s developmental jamboree. senior youth and adult referees, to begin to experience refereeing. Some of these children do it for the money, others the enjoyment of the game, but certainly none of them sign up to be verbally assaulted by unhappy parents who feel it’s their right to belittle and destroy the confidence of these young referees who may

have made a wrong call. I would like to think that our Shuswap parents, when travelling to their child’s game, would respect the younger referees from other associations as they also grow as referees. Perhaps try to picture these young referees as your own child. I encourage you to not attempt to talk to

Rock slide shuts down Trans-Canada The Trans-Canada Highway was closed on Friday, May 11, when a minor rock slide occurred in the eastbound lane of the highway at the intersection with

Shuswap Avenue in Chase. Chase RCMP were quickly on scene, determined there were no vehicles or persons involved, and re-routed highway traffic through

the village. The Ministry of Highways and Argo Road Maintenance removed the rock and the highway reopened within a few hours.

Water upgrade runs into temporary dam Public Works supervisor Pat Regush is more than ready to get the ‘water flowing’ with improvements to the Chase Water Treatment Plant. Regush has been working on plans for the project for six years. Interior Health has approved the plan for a two-pronged approach, with intake from the river, with a groundwater source as a backup. The village is receiving funding from both the federal and provincial governments for the multi-million dollar improvement to the water treatment plant. According to chief administration officer

Joni Heinrich, the federal government requires several reviews be done in relation to the project before the federal portion of funding can be approved and disbursed to the village. Particularly, they required a screening level environmental assessment be done and reviewed due to the fact that the plant will not only draw water from the river but also from below the land surface (groundwater – from an aquifer). The funding agency for the federal government in relation to this project is Western Economic Diversification. While the federal agency predicted

the review of the environmental assessment document that the village’s engineers prepared would take about three months, six months now appears

more feasible. The Village of Chase has requested assistance from the office of MP Colin Mayes in helping to move the approval process along.

The ThompsonNicola Regional District currently operates the Nuisance Mosquito Control Program in the Chase area. Program operations are run by BWP Consulting Inc. The majority of the Nuisance Mosquito Control Program is focused on floodwaters of the North and South Thompson rivers and early spring snowmelt pools in the grasslands around Pritchard. Control of nuisance mosquitoes is accomplished by treating them in their larval stages with a larvicide containing a metabolite of the bacterium: Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis (Bti). The larvicide is harmless to non-target organisms, including amphibians, birds, fish, reptiles, mammals and even other insects. Grow your own gardener WELL Do your kids think peas come from a bag in the freezer? Do they know potatoes grow underground? Could they recognize a carrot growing if they saw the green tops poking out of the soil? A lot of parents and grandparents are realizing many of today’s children are growing up without an understanding of where their food really comes from. Perhaps you are a seasoned gardener or someone who has just started thinking about getting your hands dirty. I don’t have a lot of gardening experience myself, but I do try to grow a few things each year so my kids can appreciate how food is grown. Whatever your gardening experience may be, spring has sprung and now is the perfect time to think about

planting and growing with your children. Young children have a natural curiosity about the world around them and gardening is a perfect way to tie in valuable lessons like patience – as they wait for vegetables to grow, responsibility – as they take over watering duties and the value of healthy eating – as children are often more enthusiastic about trying vegetables they have grown themselves. Gardening doesn’t necessarily require a plot of land or hours of weeding. In fact, many garden plants such as herbs, lettuce, radishes, and tomatoes do very well in containers. Raised beds can eliminate the need for weeding and are great for compact spaces. Watching a plant grow from a seed is like magic for young children, but slow germination rates can be trying for even the most patient child. Plant a mix-

ture of seeds and potted plants to help keep their interest. Sunflowers and beans are fast growing plants from seed. My son started a sunflower from a seed at preschool last year and was absolutely amazed at how tall it grew; he was so proud to share the seeds with all of his little friends. If you have a child in school, ask if there is interest in starting a school garden. Planning for a school garden can

LEE, VIOLA VERONICA (nee Behan) September 21, 1913 - May 6, 2012 Viola died at Hillside Village in her 99th year. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Kenneth Lee and an infant, Gloria Dawn, as well as all her 9 siblings. Born near the Ottawa River in Quyon, Quebec, Viola was the 7th child of descendants of large Irish immigrant families. Her father transported the family across Canada in search of work, after the death of her Mother, in childbirth. The remote Desolation Sound area became her playground where logging employed her Father and many of her siblings and their offspring over the following years. Her family name (Behan) is still widely known in Powell River where her late brothers and sisters raised their families. She is survived by many nieces and nephews in Powell River as well as her special friend and niece, Pat Materi of Vancouver. Viola moved to Salmon Arm in the mid 70’s and prided herself on being a hard-working, independent lady. She attended daily Mass as she was able and enjoyed preparing family dinners, gardening, knitting, and planning her next Halloween costume to amuse the family. Her devotion and love to her entire family and those who knew her will be her legacy. Left with many fond memories of her fun and laughter are son and wife, Ron and Catherine Lee, Armstrong, BC, daughter(s) and husband(s), Phyllis and Andre Bouchard, Pembroke, Ontario, and Cynde and Robin Russell, Tappen, BC. She will also be fondly remembered as “GG” to her nine grandchildren and their children. The staff at Hillside Village, Cottage # 6, gave Viola extraordinary care these past 4 years, as did her long time family physician, Dr. Cindy Malinowski. Viola’s family appreciate all the love and care she has received at Hillside, the many volunteer hours from the Shuswap Hospice Program and the weekly visits from the ladies of St. Joseph’s CWL, Salmon Arm. SKOTNITSKY, JEFFREY (JEFF) LEE OCTOBER 21, 1964 – APRIL 24, 2012 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Jeffrey (Jeff) Lee Skotnitsky after suffering a seizure on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at the age of 47 years. Born in Wetaskiwin, AB, he moved with his family to Sicamous, BC in 1970 and attended school there. He worked and resided in Calgary until his passing. Jeff loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. Clara Johanna Spall was born in Kelowna on March 13, 1926, the daughter of James and Johanna Spall (nee Knippel). She went to school there and at UBC for a year and at the University of Toronto after the war where she was studying occupational therapy and I was attending library school. In 1948 we married in Kelowna, B.C. Clara worked as a therapist at the Royal Jubilee hospital in Victoria, at the Tranquille sanatorium on Kamloops Lake and, later, at the prison in Abbotsford-Matsqui. Wherever we lived she raised our young family very well; they went on to live their own lives with satisfaction and honour. She was accomplished not only in her career and as a mother but as a student – she made the Dean’s list at Fraser Valley College in Abbotsford – and as a woodworker and gardener. Clara was an engaging, outgoing person who has left us with a lifetime of memories. Whither I would go, Clara would go. We lived in Abbotsford, in London, in Cranbrook, and then in Dawson Creek for 14 years where Clara worked as a weather observer at the airport and became intensely interested in speed skating when our four children joined the local speed skating club. She became its coach, formed a club in Fort St. John and began rising through administrative ranks in provincial and national speed skating, serving as president of the national body from 1977 to 1981. In this capacity she represented her sport at the winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria in 1976, at Lake Placid, NY in 1980, and at world and international events in Milan, Los Angeles, Montreal and Quebec City. Clara formed clubs in Mission, Abbotsford, Matsqui, Sardis and Surrey, and in Whitehorse and Haines Junction when we lived in the Yukon. She is a member of the speed skating Hall of Fame. Clara’s wide circle of family including her surviving sibling, Beth Weick of Penticton, mourn her passing as do our immediate family and friends. We know how much we have lost. We humbly tender our thanks to the very helpful and understanding staff at Bastion Place and to doctors McCallum, Gow, Goldberg and Connor. Cremation has taken place. The family will enjoy the company of Clara’s friends in the common room at McIntosh Grove on May 10, and in Kelowna later in August. PHILLIP L. DARBYSHIRE Aug. 21, 1938 - May 4, 2012 Phillip L. Darbyshire, 73, passed away May 4 with his loving wife, Marlene, at his side, at Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos. Phillip was born Aug. 21, 1938, in Ridgedale, SK to parents Edgar and Nina Rose. In 1942 the family moved across the country to Salmon Arm, where Phillip lived most of his life before retiring to Oliver and then Osoyoos. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers John and George. He is survived by wife Marlene and twin sister Phyllis, as well as sisters Bernice and Betty, sons Ralf and Peter, grandchildren Ryan and Amanda, great-grandchildren Alden and Owen, and numerous nephews and nieces. Phillip worked for many years as a truck driver, but his real passion was woodworking. He had his own shop and built much of the family’s furniture. He was a tireless worker who faced every challenge in life with strength, determination, endurance and faith in a better tomorrow. He was an inspiration to all those close to him and will continue to be an inspiration. A memorial service was held at 2:30 P.M. Friday May 11, 2012 at the Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Chapel in Oliver.
