An unexpected difference-maker Emily de Boer found inspiration from Rick Hansen; now she and her sister are medal bearers in 25th anniversary relay

Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay •More than 7,000 medal-bearers are helping trace the original Man In Motion Tour across Canada. It winds its way through Richmond Sunday May 20, stopping at a number of community centres and other locations, including Fisherman’s Wharf in Steveston.

t was the biggest stage Audrey de Boer had faced. But after a few voice lessons she sang a heartfelt song to her sister Emily, whose life had just been turned upside down. Emily had taken strength from a necklace engraved with a simple word—believe—to be in Garry Point Park that night, her first major outing since an operation four months earlier left her paralyzed in hospital. Tears were shed that night when Audrey, 10, sang “The Climb,” a Miley Cyrus song about staying strong through life’s struggles—and Emily was doing just that. It was Emily, after all, who organized much of the event from her hospital bed: a fundraiser with music, food and dancing that raised $17,000 for the Rick Hansen Foundation. It was something she wanted to do for other kids in her situation, after the bright, athletic 12-year-old lost the use of her legs following a surgical attempt to correct a spine curvature in February 2011. Emily was captain of her soccer team and co-captain of her hockey team. She’s now in a wheelchair after spending a year in hospitals and rehabilitation centres. But she’s not hiding on the sidelines. Emily and Audrey are both medal-bearers in the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay. The sisters will stay together as each takes a turn Sunday bearing a silver medal that’s made its way across Canada, carrying the spirit of Hansen, Canada’s Man In Motion. Hansen inspired Emily early on. He visited in hospital, telling her to be strong—that he would be right by her side. It was then he suggested the young girl be a part of the 12,000-kilometre relay. Vignettes make Sockeye Special sparkle Author Ron Hyde digs up some fascinating nuggets about Richmond’s history by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter Some fascinating vignettes about Richmond’s colourful history highlight author Ron Hyde’s new book, The Sockeye Special. While much of the book is about the Steveston interurban tram, and the different way of life a century ago, there are also other pearls. But first, the meat of the 82-page book that includes 82 historical photographs and images. Between 1905 and 1958, the Steveston tram brought thousands of people to Steveston from Vancouver, mostly workers heading for the waterfront canneries. But the tram also brought people to the Minoru racetrack, which aside from exciting horse races and entertainment, chalked up a number of historical firsts in the aeronautical field. Ever wondered who the first passenger was aboard an airplane in B.C.? Well, that would be reporter James Hewitt from The Province newspaper, who in April of 1912 gave new meaning to the term “intrepid reporting.” After pilot Billy M. Stark made a solo exhibition flight in his bi-plane over Minoru Park on April 24, 1912, Hewitt asked Stark if he’d ever taken a passenger up with him. The following day, Stark fashioned a seat for Hewitt using a wooden board attached next to the engine, and Hewitt hung on to the rigging of the plane as it soared 600 feet above Minoru Park, flying almost 6 miles. Stories like this were sourced from transcribed interviews conducted in the 1960s by local students, who volunteered to speak to “old timers” of the day, said Hyde, who himself has lived in Richmond

for more than half a century. The tram was a vital link for more than just the transportation of people. It served to shuttle cargo as well, including milk from Richmond farmers, who shipped milk in giant cans to dairies in the Marpole area of Vancouver. With Richmond residents relying on collected rain for their water supply, farmers sought a means to supplement that by striking a deal with these Vancouver dairies, who would clean out these large cans, fill them to the brim with fresh drinking water, and return them to Richmond. For those who lived in Richmond back in the 1960s and 1970s, they might recall the massive white sand dunes that covered much of what is now known as Garry Point Park. Turns out that white sand was hardly local and had a distinctly international origin. Hyde wrote about the European tall ships that would come to Steveston to load up on the prized sockeye salmon, and their connection to the white sand. “These vessels originated in Great Britain and Europe and as they unloaded their cargo at the many ports on the South Seas and Caribbean Islands, they took on ballast at the islands by loading up with sand from the beaches for their trip up the Pacific Coast to Steveston. On arrival at the canneries, the sand was dumped in the Fraser River.” That white sand was eventually dredged from the Fraser River and deposited on Garry Point and Shady Island, giving Garry Point those unique eight-to-ten-foot high sand dunes. “The kids who played on “The Dunes” never realized that the lovely white sand had originated in Bermuda, Barbados, Jamaica and elsewhere,” Hyde wrote. In partnership with the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and the Richmond Museum, Hyde’s book has been added to the library collection of all local public and independent elementary and secondary schools. The Sockeye Special sells for $15 and is available at the Steveston Bookstore, Black Bond Books, and in the gift shops at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Britannia Heritage Shipyards and London Heritage Farm, as well as the Richmond Cultural Centre’s information desk.

From Page 1 Others lifted her spirit. A hockey teammate organized the “believe” necklace campaign. Another set up a trust fund to help with wheelchair and therapy costs. While Hansen personally invited Emily to be a part of the relay, McDonald’s owner Christine Campbell invited Audrey, who’s made a significant impact to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Audrey was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age six. So she formed a team for the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes and within a few years raised $28,000 for the charity. But days have been hard; the family is in the midst of moving to a new home and facing a major renovation to make it wheelchair accessible. Nonetheless mom Charmis de Boer—who will be with her girls, along with dad Grant, at the relay Sunday—is extremely proud. “Emily, instead of crawling into a deep dark hole...she’s decided that she’s going to go out there and do what she can,” said Charmis. “I feel so proud of both of them.” Next Tuesday, Emily will join the relay again. This time with Hansen for the relay’s final metres from Robson Square to the Terry Fox Memorial in downtown Vancouver. “It’s kind of like a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” said Emily, who called Hansen “super nice” and “generous.” Emily herself is proving to be an inspiration. A woman— whose depression had sent her spiraling downward—recently approached the family. Seeing Emily leave hospital for that fundraising event in Garry Point Park last June gave her strength—and, she said, saved her life. Emily, a Grade 6 student, has returned to the pool for para-swimming and on Wednesday spoke to two classes at her school, Lord Byng Elementary. She told students about the relay and what it means to be a differencemaker. Said Emily: “A lot of my friends know I’m in it. They just don’t know why.”

Customer service stars honoured at Tourism Richmond Service Awards Richmond’s customer service professionals were honoured at the fourth annual Tourism Richmond Service Awards held Wednesday at River Rock Show Theatre. The “rock star” themed event celebrated “star” employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to provide exceptional customer service. “The Tourism Richmond Service Awards recognize the achievements of our incredible front-line staff and highlight their vital importance in fulfilling Tourism Richmond’s mandate,” said Ed Gavsie, director of visitor and partner services at Tourism Richmond. Among those attending was Shelley Civkin, Richmond Public Library’s communications officer and Richmond Review book columnist. Civkin was driving home from on Oct. 27, 2011 when a small plane crashed right in front of her on Sea Island. Her car missed the burning jet fuel on the road by five feet. Traumatized by what she saw, she made her way to the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel, where staff went above board in helping Civkin recover. She was even offered a room at no charge. Also at the hotel was Jan Hylke from KLM. He spent two hours sitting with Civkin, listening to her recall her story over and over again. Hylke flew all the way from The Netherlands to be at Wednesday’s awards night, where he received a certificate of appreciation from Civkin on behalf of Tourism Richmond. Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel staff received a Tourism Spirit Award for their efforts. The arrival of the Vancouver Biennale sculptures, especially Miss Mao trying to Evelina Halsey-Brandt poise herself Councillor on the head of Lenin, created a catalyst for dialogue on the role of art in our city. It made you think, feel and talk passionately about it. The point of art is to stimulate, and Miss Mao and Lenin certainly did that! The arts are a vital part of Richmond’s social fabric and play a significant role in contributing to the health and vibrancy of our community. The arts are composed of a variety of creative disciplines and activities – places, spaces, people and programs. Richmond City Council, staff, community groups, industry and volunteers have been dedicated in strategically building the arts into every facet of the community. Since 2004, the City has been making an investment to increase the capacity of arts organizations, to enhance current programs and foster new high-quality arts festivals and activities, identify and showcase Richmond’s artistic talent, and leverage partnerships, grants and sponsorship opportunities. We’ve had longstanding favourites such as the Gateway Theatre, Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond Cultural Centre, and The Lulu Series: Art in the City. All have brought international perspectives to Richmond and built regular audiences spanning well outside our Richmond borders. And for the past decade, the City has strategically built new

opportunities within the arts to complement what we already offer, as well as to include every facet of our community. We have grown the Richmond Public Art Program which now comprises over 70 artworks in the public realm, and expanded the Cultural Centre and Arts Centre to address trending interests (the Media Lab, Rooftop Garden and Youth Dance Company). We also expanded a summertime favourite, the Maritime Festival, in 2011 to include a substantial arts theme which proved hugely popular – doubling attendance. This year’s Maritime Festival runs August 10-12. We’ve worked hard to create opportunities for local artists, both senior and emerging artists – the annual Canada-wide Culture Days celebration every fall, the Annual Arts Awards that took place last week, and the Art at Work series of professional development workshops taking place right now are all great examples. The arts also contribute to the City’s economic well being. A city with a thriving arts scene attracts citizens, corporate head offices and visitors. The arts can be significant job creators both directly and indirectly. In addition, cultural tourism is one of the fastest-growing worldwide tourism markets and contributes significantly to the economy. Cultural tourists spend more time and money in a community than other tourists. For many reasons, the arts in Richmond give people a sense of pride and belonging, a different way to look at life, to ask questions, and to communicate across multicultural, generational and other perceived boundaries. Step out, and step into Richmond’s arts world and see for yourself.

EDITORIAL: The return of the PST

T

he provincial government is bringing back the provincial sales tax (PST). It had no choice — it was told to do so by voters last summer in the HST referendum. The harmonized tax, and most specifically, the way it came about, was so reviled that a majority of voters were quite prepared to bring back the PST. This despite the fact that the PST is not nearly as efficient a tax, and does not come with the tax credits that the HST does. Voters weren’t even swayed by a provincial promise to reduce the HST to 10 per cent, which would be two per cent lower than the combined GST and PST. The provincial Liberal government had no one to blame but itself, although that hasn’t stopped it from blaming leaders of the Fight HST campaign, the media, rebellious citizens and the NDP. But it has now done what it had to do, and the new PST looks like it will be at least a little simpler for businesses to deal with. Payments can be made online and timelines will be more harmonized with the GST remittance schedule. While the government’s new PST bill does not specify what goods and services will be exempt from PST, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said the

Tom Fletcher/Black Press Finance Minister Kevin Falcon says the new version of the PST will be cheaper for government to administer, but will collect less revenue for the province when it takes effect next spring.

exemptions will be similar to those under the old PST. The list of goods and services to be exempted will be published as a regulation, making it easier for the government to add and take away from the list of exempt items. While this naturally has raised some suspicions, as the Liberals’ record on

the HST has been one of a long series of broken promises (remember the promise that the price of goods would come down because of the HST?), it will probably be more efficient. It will be up to the media, opposition politicians and the public to publicize PST exemptions and any changes to them.

The entire HST exercise was beneficial in several respects. It showed that citizens have the power to put limits on governments that exceed their mandates. There was no promise of an HST in the 2009 election. Two months later, it was government policy. B.C. referendum law

allowed citizens to overthrow this reversal in policy. The HST debacle caused one premier to leave office and may yet cause the defeat of the government. Future governments will be much more cautious in going against public will, and refusing to listen to reasonable concerns.

Celebrating the people behind the food

Shades of Green Arzeena Hamir

R

ecently, Tourism Richmond announced a contest to hirex a blogger to eat at a different Richmond restaurant for a year.

As you can imagine, thousands of people applied. The finalists are just being interviewed and I’m sure 365 restaurants

will get some fabulous coverage from the blogger. There are more than 800 restaurants in Richmond so not all of them will make it. Obviously, the well known ones will get a review and others will be added based on food recommendations. However, food isn’t the only thing that draws people to a certain locale. It’s important, but I want to highlight how the people behind the food are what really make for return customers. And here in Richmond, we have no shortage of characters who own or work in our food establishments. Let me take you through some of my favourites. It’s not secret that I love a good cup of coffee in the morning. One of my favourite

coffee hangouts is the one closest to my house – Blenz at Garden City and Blundell. Now normally, I’d stick to independent coffee houses but this Blenz has a couple of bonuses. It’s within walking distance, the staff are extremely friendly and, especially in the morning, there’s a cast of regulars that come by and socialize. Of course, it helps that they serve organic coffee too. When I need to head over to Steveston, I make a point of stopping in at Bean & Beyond, near the corner of No. 1 Road and Moncton. Yummy organic coffee, a fabulous poached egg breakfast, and the fact that Dawood knows practically every customer’s name makes it a very special place. And, if you’ve ever been

around during World Cup Soccer time, the coffee shop transforms itself into soccer central. If readers are familiar with the TV show, Seinfeld, the term “Soup Nazi” may ring a bell. Well, Richmond has its very own “Coffee Nazi” and I use the term in the most affectionate way possible. Artie, the owner of Viva Java on Cambie near Shell Rd has been roasting and serving organic coffee for over a decade. He just serves coffee, both drip and espresso-based, but it’s probably the best in Richmond. If you come in asking for a no-foam, skinny, extra hot latte with a muffin, you may just be shown the door! But the restaurant that probably epitomizes Richmond is a small, take away place in my

neighbourhood. When I moved back to Richmond 10 years ago, it was a fish and chip shop. It was soon purchased by a Turkish family who kept the fish & chips but then renamed it Kebab Grill and added a whole menu of kebabs, donairs, and felafel. The food was really tasty and very inexpensive. A couple of years ago, the place was bought by a Filipino family who kept the fish & chips, all the Turkish & Mediterranean food, but have now added a whole menu of Filipino dishes, included the famous “Taho” dessert. All three very different cuisines live side-by-side in relative harmony. It may not make it to Tourism Richmond’s website but it truly represents what Richmond’s all about.

A Celebration of Life memorial service has now been scheduled for later this month for two Richmond brothers who died May 12 in a tragic car crash on No. 4 Road. Shane Moses, 19, and his 16-year-old brother Jess, died instantly when the BMW 325i they were riding in swerved out of control and struck a tree alongside the road. The 20-year-old driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital on the same day he was admitted. The memorial will be held on Saturday, May 26 at 1 p.m. at Richmond Pentecostal Church, 9300 Westminster Hwy., just east of Garden City Road. Derrick Lim, stepfather to Shane and Jess, said in lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the 2013 Matthew McNair dry grad celebrations. Arrangements for collecting the donations haven’t yet been finalized, but Lim said that information will be released as soon as possible. —by Martin van den Hemel

Two young men suffered stab wounds during a violent altercation at an apartment party on the 9000 block of Odlin Road on Monday. Police were called when a fight broke out at the party, and discovered two men in their 20s suffering non-life threatening stab wounds. Investigators believe there was no motive behind the stabbing, other than the fact it resulted from an argument. There was no suspect description provided to investigators. Both victims, who are expected to make full recoveries, are known to police. Investigators don’t suspect the stabbing was gang related.

The B.C. Liberal majority on a legislative committee has recommended against a province-wide ban on cosmetic pesticide use, after a year of hearing from farmers, foresters, environmental organizations and interested citizens. Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett chaired the committee whose four B.C. Liberal members outvoted three NDP members calling for a province-wide ban on common household herbicides, insecticides and fungicides used for visual effect. The majority recommended that retail sales should be treated similar to tobacco, kept out of sight and available only by request from someone with training in how to use the chemicals. NDP environment critic Rob Fleming noted that Premier Christy Clark formed the committee after publicly agreeing with NDP leader Adrian Dix that the cosmetic pesticide ban should be enacted. A province-wide ban would equalize a patchwork of municipal restrictions around the province and stop retail sales the public, he said. The committee’s recommendations go against up to 80 per cent of public opinion, and would leave B.C. “dead last” in provincial regulations, Fleming said. Bennett said he discussed the recommendations with Clark before she left on a trade mission to Asia, and she offered no objections. Cabinet could still overrule the committee and impose a ban, which he acknowledged would be much more politically popular.

celebrities. Hu is celebrating the grand opening of Eye Luxury Boutique at Aberdeen Centre this Friday, his third business venture in Richmond. He owns another eyewear store, Eye Gallery Optical just down the road at Continental Square, which specializes in fashion eyewear, such as Gucci and Prada, as well as a high-end car customization garage, AVEX Auto. Hu’s new optical store is “much more high end” and his goal is to become the “most exclusive store” in the Lower Mainland. Early retail returns suggest he’s heading in the right direction, as in just a few months, he’s become among the top North American retailers of Chrome Hearts eyewear, an American luxury brand founded in the 1980s. Chrome Hearts is to eyewear what Bugatti is to automobiles. The regular line of Chrome Hearts ranges from $800 to $2,500, and is handmade in Japan, with sterling silver joints, quality materials—from snake leather to buffalo horn—and fantastic craftsmanship, Hu said. But it’s Chrome Hearts jewelled line that’s the cat’s meow. Hu donned one diamond-encrusted pair that will set you back north of $20,000. While Hu hasn’t done any marketing, he’s discovered that news about his story is spreading quickly thanks to word of mouth.

Martin van den Hemel photo Exclusive eyewear at Aberdeen Centre’s newly opened Eye Luxury Boutique, such as those worn by celebrities, cost as little as $200, and up to $20,000 for Chrome Hearts’ diamond-studded and hand-crafted line.

Sparkling diamonds, sterling silver, fine leather and gleaming wood aren’t traditionally materials you’d associate with eyewear. But Dennis Hu is banking on the concept that luxurious exclusive eyewear will draw out Richmond’s well-heeled as well as those eager to copy the latest fashion accessories sported by

Birdie nets Keel Tour victory Battling wrist injury, fellow amateur Christine Wong of Richmond ties for 38th by Don Fennell Sports Editor They came from far and wide, among them Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., the reigning two-time player of the year; LPGA Tour rookie Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John; and twotime CN Canadian Women’s Golf Tour event winner Ashi Bunch of Morristown, Tenn. But it was Jisoo Keel, a 16-year-old amateur from nearby Coquitlam, who topped the field at the first CN Canadian Women’s Tour event of the 2012 season Wednesday at the Richmond Country Club. Keel pumped her fist in the air with delight as she drained a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to card an even par 72 on the final round of the 36hole event. It was one of three birdies on the last five holes and gave her a twoday total of 1-under 143. Vancouver’s So Yeon Park and Renee Skidmore of Ev-

erett, Wash., both pros, tied for second, a single shot back at even par 144. The victory earned Keel an exemption into the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open which will be held at her home club, The Vancouver Golf Club, in Coquitlam Aug. 20 to 26. “I’m really honoured to (be able to) play in my hometown in front of friends and family,” said Keel, who wasn’t overjoyed with the final round but happy with the result

and proud of the many par saves. Richmond’s Christine Wong, also an amateur and Team Canada member, fought off a bothersome wrist injury to finish in a five-way tie for 38th in the 89-player field. After carding an opening-round 1-over par, she shot 80 Wednesday to finish with a two-day total 153. Attending San Diego State University on a golf scholarship, Wong is coming off winning the NCAA

Bruin Wave Invitational at El Caballero, Calif. Mach 6 after tying for 16th at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in February. “The (college) season was pretty strong for me, but this is probably my ninth or 10th tournament this spring already,” said Wong. “I’m looking forward to taking a few weeks off and hopefully starting my summer strong.”

One of the most colourful coaches on the local basketball scene is doubling up his duties—again. Paul Eberhardt has accepted the opportunity to coach the Langara Falcons college men’s team next season, but will retain the same role with the R.C. Palmer Griffins high school

senior boys’ team. “I’m still a bit surprised by it myself,” laughed Eberhardt. “When I left (coaching at) McNair and went to Capilano College I figured I probably wouldn’t do high school again. But then I went to Palmer and high school became real big for me and while I enjoyed my 10 years at Cap, I thought I won’t be going back to that league. It’s weird, but

Langara is a perfect fit for me.” Eberhardt said he feels he can comfortably manage both jobs “because I have good people helping me at both spots.” “The bottom line is I love to coach,” he said. “And Langara is an established program and I would expect to go there and have the team be competitive right away.”

Langara is expected to have a significant Richmond presence, led by J.N. Burnett grad Elliott Mason. •Eberhardt is planning a unique pre-season high school invitational at Palmer prior to the start of the 2012-13 campaign. He’s calling it the All-Tier Challenge in which the top teams from the single-A, double-A and triple-A tiers will compete.

Chuckers will test mettle at long weekend classic Richmond City Baseball’s Bantam AAA Chuckers will learn a lot about themselves when they host many of the province’s topranked teams at their annual long weekend invitational at Blundell Park. “The experience is impor-

tant. Playing with pressure and against good teams is a valuable learning tool,” said manager Alex Klenman. “Although we desire a particular outcome, we try to remember the experience is what builds the player.”

Cloverdale Black Spurs and Vancouver Mounties are ranked one-two. Cloverdale boasts nine returning AAA players and experienced coaching. “Vancouver has top-shelf talent and their coaching staff plays an aggressive, relentless style making them hard to play against,” said Klenman. “We’ve had some great battles over the years, but the truth is we haven’t been able to compete with them since

2008. We look forward to playing them.” Abbotsford Angels and Ridge Meadows Royals are the No. 3 and 4-ranked teams in the standings and also tough to beat. “I think it’s safe to say the eventual provincial champion is one of these teams, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the eventual national champion is here as well,” said Klenman. –by Don Fennell

MINI keeps rolling out the fun by Jim Robinson

Classic car show at public works open house

Special to Black Press

E

very automaker talks about making its cars fun to drive but few ever make it happen. Of the handful I can think of, MINI is certainly the most prolific in terms of models available. You’d think there isn’t a lot you can do with a shape that is basically a square and one that shouldn’t be tampered with at that, because it is truly iconic. There is the basic MINI threedoor hatch followed by the Coupe, Convertible, Clubman (wagon), Countryman (minivan/CUV) and now the Roadster and that doesn’t include Special Editions (Bayswater, Highgate and Baker Street). And, MINI just keeps on rolling out new wrinkles seemingly with no end in sight. This year expect to see the Paceman, a Range Rover Evoquesque wagon and the racetuned GP2. MINI doesn’t market its products as practical, utilitarian or ideal for the growing family. They sell the MINI as fun, fun, fun and cheeky fun at that. Two perfect examples are the 2012 JCW (John Cooper Works) Hatchback and the brand new Roadster.

The John Cooper Works Hatchback (left) and Roadster Cooper S (right) add to the growing pantheon of MINI models for 2012 with two more in the pipeline. MINI Canada expects to sell its 40,000th car this spring.

And while they may be based on the same car, the personalities are totally different. The John Cooper Works trim level takes the MINI Cooper S to the next level. Power is increased to 208 hp and 192 ft/lb of torque. The only transmission is a sixspeed manual with a combined fuel rating of 6.7L/100 km.

FYI, all three trim levels are named Cooper and if you’re wondering where the Cooper part comes from, it’s a charming story. John Cooper and his father, Charles, were racecar constructors in the 1950s and created what were the first successful rear-engined cars. They won the FI title in 1959 and 1960. But

where they made their greatest impact was souping up Minis that, with a surprising power-toweight ratio, beat up on everything they came across and, on the way, garnered multiple wins in the Monte Carlo Rally when winning was like winning at Indy or LeMans today. See Page 19

CUPE 394 is holding a Classic Car Show at the City of Richmond’s annual Engineering and Public Works Open House on Saturday, June 2. A host of classic cars will be on display from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane. Besides cars, there will be other activities for people of all ages. Gardeners can grab some free topsoil, while future Bob the Builders can get up close and personal by going on and inside dump trucks, graders, excavators, and other real-life, real-size heavy equipment. Kids of all ages can win free prizes, purchase delicious hot dogs and other food choices or go for a hay ride tour of the works yard. Other activities include live music, face painting, hands-on cement display, Community Safety display, plant and bulb sale by the Parks Department and many more attractions.

From Page 17 In 1994 BMW Group stepped in to buy what was then known as Rover Group that also included the Mini and tried to turn it around. It didn’t stop the rot and BMW sold the business but kept Mini. When production ceased in 2000, BMW announced it had a successor ready in the form of the new MINI (with letters now all in upper case). Through it all, BMW kept on the Cooper name and that included John’s son, Mike and the Cooper factory known in English slang as the Works, thus the name. Available in Cooper ($28,900), Cooper S ($32,900) and JCW ($39,900) forms, the new Roadster comes standard with a manual soft top that can be swung up or down with one hand. A power top is a $750 option and takes up no more trunk space than the cloth version. Trunk space is 250 litres. Inside it is the same mix of function and whimsy that helps set the MINI apart. There is the dinner plate sized speedo and secondary readouts smack in the middle of the dash with retro style rocker switches for everything. Attached on the left side of the steering wheel shaft mounted tach is a gauge that counts the hours and minutes the top is down. Despite the need for premium fuel, covering close to 300 kilometres at mostly highway speeds in the Roadster resulted in an average fuel consumption of 8.8L/100 km, which was a nice surprise. Yes, it’s true. Good things really do come in small packages.

Subaru BRZ is fun made simple by Jim Robinson

TODAY’S

Special to Black Press

BIG

T

here’s something to be said for keeping things simple. Subaru has managed to hit the affordable sportscar sweet spot with the 2013 BRZ by doing just that. The well-equipped entry model with sixspeed manual transmission starts at $27,295 and $28,495 for the six-speed automatic version while the pushstart ignition with smart key also adds to the convenience of the Subaru BRZ Sport-tech Package that has a starting price of $29,295 for the manual and $30,495 for automatic. And that’s about it, one basic car with two transmissions—simple. BRZ stands for Boxer, Rear-engine, Zenith. Renown for their allwheel-drive cars and CUVs, the BRZ is the first front-engine, rearwheel-drive vehicle ever produced by Subaru. It probably never would have come about except for Toyota investing (currently 16 per cent) in Subaru and its exceptional engineering prowess. As proof, Canadian Residual Value Awards from automotive insights company ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values, had Subaru winning bestin-class honours for the 2012 Impreza, Outback and WRX/STI as well as being named Best Mainstream Brand for the third year in a row. Subaru is the only firm that offers a 500,000 km maintenance plan (that’s right, 500,000 km) because their cars stay on the road so long. Collaborative work started just over two years ago. Toyota has long wanted an affordable sportscar but they are in the business of building hundreds of thousands of models. But Subaru is in the business of producing tens of thousands of cars, perfect for both their purposes. In Canada we will be get the BRZ and Toyota’s Scion division will sell their version called the FR-S. There is also a Toyota model called the GT 86 sold elsewhere in the world.

4"7& #*( DEAL!

The 2013 Subaru BRZ is Subaru’s first ever front-engined, rear-drive vehicle and a sportscar at that.

What takes a sporty car and turns it into a sportscar is the handling and performance. Subaru, like Porsche, uses horizontally opposed or “boxer” engine architecture. Because all the valves and pistons are on the same level as the crankshaft, it has a much lower centre of gravity. If you don’t know how

to drive manual, learn and this car will reward you for it. There are always those who will want more power. Subaru, like Porsche, needs no lessons on how to turbocharge a Boxer engine but how they can shoehorn a turbo into that cramped engine bay is beyond me.

But Subaru being Subaru, I just know they are working on one as you read this. The BRZ was a surprise to me. Frankly, I was not expecting this car to live up to all the hype we heard at the auto shows over winter. When it comes to the 2013 Subaru BRZ, simplicity is very much a virtue.

Ask the Experts Q: What is BYOD? A:

Q: What is the value of a Depreciation Report for our STRATA?

A:

Many strata owners ask me the value of obtaining a Depreciation Report. See summary of reasons below: • major replacements and repairs are anticipated and funded on a timely basis, which maximizes the life cycle of building components, • avoids excessive wear and tear caused by not funding major repairs and replacements when required, and the increased cost of funding for remedial work when it is ultimately undertaken, • prevents potentially unsafe conditions resulting from deferred maintenance, • maintains a stable capital funding plan to avoid or minimize unexpected “cash calls” from owners, which can create financial hardship, • limits on-going conflict between those owners who have the financial resources to fund “cash calls”, and those who do not, • avoids a decision by owners to defer necessary capital repairs/ replacements, • enables owners to assess the adequacy of their existing Contingency Reserve Fund, • enhances the personal enjoyment of living in a well-maintained property, • protects property values by ensuring that the property is well-maintained; • maximizes re-sale values by having a Depreciation Report in place, with a well-funded capital repair/ replacement plan. • enables owners and buyers to satisfy any mortgage lender requirement for a Depreciation Report

Stands for “Bring Your Own Device” and it is bad news for both employees and employers. Many companies are allowing employees to use their own laptops and smart phone devices within the company network confines. From a security perspective this is a nightmare as such uncontrolled and un-monitored devices are a real threat to company networks. From a privacy perspective, possibly worse as many companies monitor and log all incoming and outgoing network traffic and this may expose personal communication, passwords, etc. to company IT personnel. Liability issues are another can of worms because if your device takes down the company servers, or bankrupts the company through loss of intellectual property or financial data, then who’s to blame? Never mix company and personal devices, never use company mail for personal business, keep both worlds firmly separate and you will be safer for it. To you company managers - BYOD is not a savings but an exercise in poor risk management.

Yes! Yes! Yes! The newer models of low flow toilets now work better than the older high-flow toilet models. There are now many different types and brands of low flow toilets. These are toilets that not only work well, but also get government ratings that may get you a credit on your water and sewer taxes. These kinds of toilets are engineered and manufactured by companies like Kohler, Toto, and many others. Toto, for example, is a model company for low flush toilets. They make gravity fed flushing toilets and siphon models (which add an extra boost of water as needed), in a variety of styles from standard two piece designs to one piece low profile toilets. Part of the technology developed and engineered that makes low flow toilets functional is the pressure assist. The pressure assist is a combination of compressed air that forces the small amount of water used during a flush to compel waste down the trap way with an improved amount of strength. So in effect, the new breeds of low flush toilets work even better than the original high volume flush toilets. While the original low flush toilets may get easily clogged, the new and improved low flow toilets actually work much better than their predecessors. Need more information, just give Ashton a call, we can help you decide on the best toilet for you.

Q: Do you want to list your home for ®

way to burn fat and put on a little muscle?

A:

A:

Your Realtor has analyzed the market sales and has based the suggested listing price on real numbers, and the current market conditions. If you list too high and happen to find a Buyer that is willing to pay the price, the bank is unlikely to approve the mortgage because their appraiser will probably arrive at the same value/conclusion that your Realtor® did, and value your home much lower than the agreed upon price. The deal will die the Buyer will move on, and you will not be sold. ): Buyers are well educated these days, and with their Realtors help, they are able to establish market value on a home. If they come across yours, and the listing price is too high, they will either walk away or offer just lower than the ‘market value’ is. After losing one or more Buyers that way, you might realize that you are asking too much, and adjust your price, but you have lost time and the most serious Buyers. An educated Buyer will most likely not want to waste their time negotiating on a home that is not priced fairly. The end result is that you have scared away knowledgeable Buyers who would have paid you market price, and now you are dealing with newbie Buyers who want to pay less because they aren’t educated about the true value of your home. Who wins here? Take a long hard look at the Comparative Market Analysis that your Realtor provides. With the guidance of your Real Estate Consultant, make an informed decision on the market value of your home and then list your home at a reasonable asking price. Then negotiate any offers to the best price and terms that you can. That will produce a winner! YOU!

Q: Are low flow toilets any good? A:

A:

Diabetes mellitus is classified into type I and II. In type I, there is failure of insulin production by the islet cells of the pancreas. This is why it presents itself very early in life and there is not anything that can be done to prevent this. In type II, there is impaired insulin production and/or insulin resistance. The insulin present in the blood is unable to do its function. There are various risk factors for this type of diabetes which, if modified, can lead to prevention or delay of development of this illness or at least help control it much better. Some of these risk factors cannot be modified such as family history of diabetes, ethnicity, aging and let’s just say pregnancy as well. Women developing diabetes in pregnancy are at higher risk of having diabetes later on in life. Other risk factors such as impaired glucose metabolism, increased triglycerides and decreased HDL chlesterol levels in the blood, obesity, lack of activity, cigarrette smoking and alcohol abuse can certainly be modified. To prevent diabetes type II, exercise regularly, eat healthier, stay slim and trim, have a pear shaped body rather than an apple shaped one, stop smoking and work on your alcohol consumption. If you are 45 and older, ask your family doctor to check your cholesterols and glucose metabolism if it hasn’t been done already. Until next time, this is your local family doctor. Until next time, this is your local family doctor, Dr. Satnam Gandham MD.

Nowadays, it seems everyone is on more of a time constraint with work and family commitments but that doesn’t mean that you still can’t achieve your fitness goals with efficient and effective workouts. The first step is to workout in a circuit fashion by performing 2-4 exercises in succession with minimal rest in between each exercise. This will help to increase overall workout intensity, elevate your metabolism, and strengthen your cardiovascular system all at the same time. The second step is to use compound exercises (exercises that use multiple muscle groups) as this better increases caloric expenditure, strength, and muscle mass versus isolation exercises that use only one muscle group at a time. Overall, the key to getting in shape is to not only work hard but also work smart by getting more done in less time. Make every minute count and you’ll be surprised at what kind of results you could achieve. Yours in health, Isaac Payne

A:

A:

I’ve recently seen mortgage rate advertisements in the newspaper on and the internet offering a ‘No Frills’ mortgage. The rates are usually a little lower than what anyone else is offering, but there has to be a catch, right? Absolutely! ‘No Frills’ mortgage products essentially offer only one benefit - a lower rate than standard mortgage - while they come with plenty of drawbacks. Limited pre-payment privileges - which limit your ability to pay off your mortgage faster; No Portability - which won’t let you take the mortgage with you if you purchase another property; And even Sales Clauses - which state the only way to pay out your mortgage during the term is by way of a bona fide sale (no refinancing with another lender for more money and a difference rate). - Also in most cases, the no-frills mortgages aren’t that much lower of a rate. It’s human nature to want the best rate as that equals the lowest payment. However, consider that each persons financial situation is different, assessing your options is key to determining what is the best route to take. Talking with your mortgage broker to come up with a plan is always your best bet. Especially in a case of a ‘No Frills’ mortgage, it could end up saving you thousands in the end.

When looking at sunscreens, I generally separate them into two categories. There are sunscreens which use chemical active ingredients and those which use mineral ingredients. Chemical ingredients include homosalate, octisalate, oxybenzone, avobenzone, octoocrylene, and more. These chemical sunscreens generally have to use multiple active ingredients because each chemical ingredient blocks only a small part of the UV spectrum. This means unless it uses multiple ingredients, the sunscreen would not be effective in blocking all of UV-A and UV-B. Mineral ingredients however, are much better at blocking all of UV-A and UV-B. This means that mineral sunscreens can contain as little as one active ingredient - usually zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They are also much more hypoallergenic than chemical sunscreens. As a result, I recommend always having one mineral ingredient in your sunscreen and for those with sensitive skin, including children 2 or younger, to use the 100% mineral sunscreens as they are completely chemical-free. I personally recommend the Avene SPF 50 mineral cream. Ask your local skin-care pharmacist about this product or visit me at Pharmasave Steveston Village for more information on treating sensitive skin!

Q: What does a chiropractor do? A:

Chiropractor strives to keep the body healthy by working with the spine. A chiropractor assesses the spine for misalignment (subluxations) and nerve interference by checking posture, range of motion palpation of the spine and x-rays if required. If misalignments are detected, a chiropractor uses a variety of approaches to realign the spine and therefore restore the normal nerve function. The spine is a self-healing, selfregulating organism, but nerve interference can inhibit these functions, affecting not only muscle and ligaments but also the organs in the body.

Fleas are the most common external parasite of companion animals. In Richmond, fleas are a problem year round despite myths of this infestation being seasonal. Fleas are adaptive and can find a way to populate during all seasons in our lower mainland climate. Flea control is a challenge especially since the adult fleas cause clinical signs yet the majority of the flea population are found off the pet and around the home (eggs, larvae and pupae). Once you find even a single flea on your pet, it is highly likely your home has been colonized fall, winter, spring or summer. The culprit is Ctenocephalides felis which finds its way on to cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets and various other companion animals. A heavy flea burden can be lethal, especially to smaller or younger animals so prevention and treatment is very important. You cannot expect to see fleas as many animals lick them away. Please discuss specific flea treatment with your family veterinarian.

Life is full of minor and major traumas that occur daily and also much stress. Right from birth, children have numerous falls and tumbles and as they age, get involved in various sports which can cause misalignments in the spine. As we get older, we may be involved in car accidents, have poor posture, fatigue or repetitive strains from working. These can all negatively affect the spine and the nervous system and prevent us from achieving optimal health and wellness. That is why is it so important to have your spine checked throughout your life. Call Minoru Chiropractic today for a consultation and examination—we always accept new patients.

Ask the Experts Q: What is this ringing in my ears?

Q: I am planning a new Outdoor Space for my back yard, I know you sell fireplaces but can you help me with other aspects of my project?

A:

A:

Absolutely! By understanding the purpose of the space, together we can determine what may be needed. For example: a 10’ x 20’ patio may be broken down to three spaces: a 10’ x 12’ space for seating, a 3’ wide corridor for traffic to and from of the house, and the final 5’ space for your outdoor cooking/BBQ area. Adding a gas fire feature to the seating area plus supplementing it with either electric or gas heaters will allow you and your guests to enjoy your time together longer into the evening. Of course, the cook can have a free-standing grill or a fully customized outdoor kitchen ready for him/her including built-in accessories making the space ready for any event. Above the grill can also have heating so they aren’t left in the cold while their guests are enjoying themselves. Stop by the Richmond Firebox with ideas in hand and we will be happy to show you the available options.

It does not matter which coin shop you go to in the Lower Mainland… you will likely get better offers than what these companies buying from shows at the hotels will offer you.

Continuing our discussion of tinnitus or ringing in the ears. These sounds are heard inside the head of the person experiencing it, but not to anyone outside of us. There are different sounds for the tinnitus. One is a high pitched ringing which may be resultant from whiplash, head injury, jaw problems or medications. There may also be roaring or hissing sounds from pressure imbalances in the middle ear. There can be pulsing sounds like our heart beat which usually is the blood flow along the ear canal. There are buzzing sounds or rustling sounds, that may be causes by something against the ear drum. There may be clicking sounds or pitch changing sounds which may be also jaw related. And even some unusual sounds like songs or music called hearing hallucinations can be present and which sound very real (but only heard by us). An article on tinnitus treatment published in November 2011 found the most efficient methods for helping to reduce the effects were; 34% hearing aids, 30% music and 10% relaxation techniques. At this time there is no medical ‘cure’ for tinnitus, so visiting a hearing professional can be a very good starting point.

Q: I see advertisements in the paper for companies I have seen those advertisements as well and have been less than impressed. The high prices listed are what the rarest date in the highest known condition fetched in auction. That is not what they are paying. We had a reporter bring two ladies who were at one of those “road shows” to us for a comparison offer. They had both coins and gold jewelry. Our offer was three hundred percent more than what the road show was offering! We have had many other people come in to sell us their coins after being offered very low valuations at these “hotel” shops.

Q: Are you an expert in your field or

Q: Are cavities contagious? A:

Actually, yes they are! Just as your kids can catch your cold when you are sick, they can also catch your cavities. The reason is bacteria called streptococcus sobrinus mutans which causes dental decay are contagious. And yes they are from the same family of strep bacteria which can cause strep throat and the like. Research has shown that this bacteria is passed from adult to child through saliva contact kissing, sharing utensils, cups etc. Although all children are susceptible there is a “window of infectivity” which is critical for children from 6 months to 3 years. When the bacteria is contacted it colonizes in the child’s mouth. The bacteria themselves require a food source to thrive, ideally simple sugars and carbohydrates (candy and you-name-it) which if left in the mouth provides a smorgasbord for them and they multiply like crazy. They produce lactic acid which becomes concentrated and will dissolve/damage tooth structures. The presence of other factors in a person’s mouth like your saliva chemistry, level of hygiene, eating choices etc., influence the level of strep bacteria present. Hence some people seem more or less prone to dental cavities than others. Other research has been done to find a vaccine to eliminate strep mutans but it has not been totally effective yet. Only a prescription rinse called chlorhexidine can reduce strep levels in the mouth effectively although xylitol containing chewing gum shows some promise too. Unfortunately there isn’t enough concentration of xylitol in gum products approved for use yet but many companies are working on it. For now the good old tooth brush used properly is still your best bet for preventing problems in kids along with a healthy diet.

‘There’s not a lot to compare to it’

A Majestic addition to Main Street It can be tough to find a bit of peace in Vancouver, but Trafalgar Enterprises has managed to do it with their new development, Majestic on Main Street. With gorgeous views, great floorplans and amazing details, the development really lives up to its high-end name. “This is the only brand-new development on Main Street,” says Trafalgar’s Rattan Bagga. “There’s not a lot to compare to it, price-wise.” With two townhomes and 22 condominiums in a variety of one- and two-bedroom layouts, Majestic on Main is far from a cookie-cutter development. Each suite offers stunning views of Main Street, Vancouver or Burnaby.

“This is the highest point on Main Street,” Bagga says. “The top floor views are amazing.” Inside, the engineered hardwood floors are perfectly complemented by the custom wood cabinets and elegant composite stone countertops in the kitchen. The glass-tile backsplash is a great little touch that adds another gorgeous detail to the homes. Stainless-steel appliances is another modern touch. “We are putting in appliances that we would put in our home,” says Bagga. Homes start at $399,900. My Love, it is now 6 unbearable long, lonely years without you, We were always one, So happy & content. I am lost , my heart is so broken, I miss and need the comfort of you, We where never supposed to be apart, We knew this when we met all those years ago. As I stuggle in this painful, lonely hell I fear: You have the memories, would not trade one single one, Good or bad But those memories cannot hold you, Love you, and receive love back, Nor take away your pain with a hug, You can’t hear their voice, Or see their handsome face morning and night Nobody knows how we were My only hope as I ask you every day for, Is for you to come “Home” And take me with you Where I belong That you will hold me and take away, This pain and loneliness, That you still Love me and have not Forgotten me. Forever with me.

Ongoing Kids Programs Available

KidSport Richmond members Sean Davies and Leslie Matheson received a donation of $1,000 from Nations Cup Soccer Society members Jeff Wilson and Doug Wootton. The funds received will go directly to benefit children and families, in financial need, and to offer them the opportunity to participate in the sport of their choice – So All Kids Can Play.

During the month of April, Richmond Animal Hospital offered nail trims by donation to the BC SPCA Education and Adoption Centre in Richmond. Through the generosity of its clients, $1500 was raised. In May, Richmond Animal Hospital will be doing nail trims by donation to the Richmond Food Bank, The Sharing Farm and Minoru Residence Garden, in honour of the passing of Mary Gazetas, who was a client. Those interested are asked to call the hospital first to book an appointment.
