KITIMAT - Shell Canada this morning has announced a partnership with three Asian companies to build a large liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant at Kitimat. Shell will own 40 per cent of what’s being called LNG Canada with Korea Gas Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation and PetroChina Company Ltd. each owning 20 per cent. “LNG Canada would connect the abundant supply of Canadian natural gas to growing markets around the world. This also begins the formal consultation process with First Nations and local community residents regarding the project,” a press release this morning states. This would be the third LNG
plant for the Kitimat area, increasing its importance in the world export market for the commodity. “Our combined expertise, and our focus on technological innovation in delivering safe and environmentally sound LNG projects around the globe, ensures that our LNG Canada project would be well-suited to deliver long-term value for British Columbia and increase access to new export markets for Canada,” says Jose-Alberto Lima, Vice President LNG Americas, Shell Energy Resources Company. The proposed LNG Canada project includes the design, construction and operation of a gas liquefaction plant and facilities for the storage and export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), including marine off-loading facilities
and shipping. LNG Canada will initially consist of two LNG processing units referred to as “trains,” each with the capacity to produce six million tonnes of LNG annually, with an option to expand the project in the future, the press release states. “LNG Canada can create significant economic benefit for the province, First Nations, local communities and the region. Such a project can create thousands of jobs during construction and hundreds of full-time, permanent jobs during operations. Such a significant energy project can also bring indirect economic development opportunities to the region,” the press release adds. A website set up to provide information on the project indicates the partnership will fill a
project description later this year as a step toward undertaking a regulatory review. Kitimat mayor Joanne Monaghan said she was extremely happy with the announcement because of its potential economic impact on her municipality. “What this does is move the project along,” said Monaghan. “They don’t say this in the release, but they would need between 5,000 to 7,000 [construction] workers, 600 or more to oversee construction and there would be hundreds and hundreds of permanent jobs,” she said. Shell has already purchased the old Methanex site as a plant location. That’s within the boundaries of Kitimat, meaning the municipality stands to benefit from a revitalized tax base.

Government seizes suspected drug money in Terrace, BC TERRACE - The provincial government has been the recipient of $40,980 in suspected drug money arising from two incidents in Terrace. On July 8, 2011, a company with offices in Terrace and Kamloops reported that a suspicious package had been intercepted at their Kamloops office through their internal mail from Terrace, a press release from the Terrace RCMP stated last week. Police say the package was opened and contained what they termed
to be $30,090 in suspected drug money. The company turned the money over to the Kamloops RCMP. “An individual known to police to have drug histories and gang affiliations came to the company in Kamloops to inquire about the package. They didn’t pursue it any further after learning the police had seized the money,” the release continued. “Terrace RCMP spoke with the 31-year-old man who had sent the money from Terrace. He was uncooperative with police in providing a statement as to his ownership
of the money,” said the release. The provincial government’s Civil Forfeiture Office was called in and the money was forfeited on April 24, 2012. In the second incident, RCMP officers stopped a blue 2009 Ford Focus on Dec. 21, 2011. The police release said they had earlier been stopped on the road with emergency lights

TERRACE - In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers. Ever since she was a little girl, 17-year-old Casey, knew she wanted to play professional golf, but her family’s budget was stretched with a busy household of seven young children. “We knew that Casey had extraordinary talent, but we could not afford the expensive membership and green fees,” said Casey’s mom, Julie MacNeil. Kids who are able to participate in organized sport and recreation, outside of school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased selfesteem, greater selfconfidence, leadership skills, and better grades. “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives, not just their childhood years,” said Dan Thompson, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Programs like Canadian Tire Jumpstart are dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can participate in orga-

Man stopped before he could jump off bridge flying fish By Staff Reporter
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
HAZELTON - Hazelton RCMP responded to 68 calls during the week of May 7-13. In one incident, on May 9th, police responded to a suicidal male who was standing in the middle of Highway 16 in the village of Gitsegukla. The male then attempted to jump off the bridge but was restrained by the First Responders. The male was transported to the hospital for an assessment. On May 10th a driver lost control of his vehicle on Highway 37 and
drove down a steep embankment. The vehicle then caught on fire. The male was located outside of his car with a head injury. The Kitwanga First responders were at the scene immediately and did an excellent job of attending to the driver and were able to safely get the driver out of the ditch. The driver was then transported to the hospital. On May 11, police responded to a Break and Enter where a 1999 Green Yamaha 600 Quad was stolen. The complainant stated he also was missing a number of tools from inside his home.

Long wait for Rupert building By Alan S. Hale THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - If plans for a new emergency building in Prince Rupert were approved today, it still wouldn’t be ready for the RCMP or the fire department to actually move in for almost two-and-ahalf years. That’s according to Witmar Abele, the architect the City of Prince Rupert hired to guide them through the pre-planning phase of constructing a new emergency building. Abele - who is experienced in the designing of emergency buildings - estimates that the process of designing the actual building to meet the RCMP’s needs, the City’s needs and possibly the fire department’s needs and standards would take the better part of a year. “Of course, that process can vary wildly in the time required, but 34 weeks is not uncommon. It’s three-quarters of a year to get from the earliest schematic design to the point where we could actually put the project out to bidding,” Abele told council at the third meeting on the emergency building issue held last Monday. Once the project is ready to be bid on by the contractors who want to build it, Abele estimates that it would still be almost 90 weeks before the building is ready to be occupied. “Once the construction phase has begun, a yearand-a-half is again not uncommon. There are many factors that influence the time required for the construction phase, such as whether or not the contractor gets into winter construction or other things that might slow it down,” said Abele. Abele was asked by a member of the public if this time line took into account Prince Rupert’s notoriously rainy weather. He said it did. Councillor Anna Ashley asked Abele why it would take 34 weeks just to put a design together. “Designing a building such as an RCMP station, Fire Hall or possibly both of them together is a highly complex process,” said Abele in explaining that design nowadays includes consultation.

KITIMAT - With the current contract set to expire in just over two months time, Rio Tinto Alcan and its unionized CAW 2301 workers are preparing for their first face-to-face sessions. RTA vice president Paul Henning, while not a member of the company’s negotiating team, offered his thoughts to the Northern Sentinel on a new contract. Saying negotiations are always a tense time “because at the end of the day we have to be competitive, he added, “I fully understand the union wants to secure its employment base. Henning also pointed out this set of negotiations, because the time span of the resulting contract - assuming it is again for five years - will cover both the existing plant and transition to the new one which is expected to be up and running in 2014. “Its tough for everybody concerned because you’re trying to have a contract that’s fair in both worlds, Henning said. That’s exactly what the 2007 contract was designed to do, on the assumption that by now the Kitimat Modernisation Project would have been completed. Unfortunately, the world recession put paid
PAUL HENNING to that plan and KMP did not get the full go-ahead until last December. The 2007 contract therefore included such things as transition language and how employee issues would be handled through that change, things Henning said would have to be “hard-wired into any new deal. Returning to the idea of a five-year contract, he said RTA saw that as desirable since it didn’t want to be going into another set of negotiations in the middle of start up of the new smelter. “That’s the last thing we want for anybody. Asked about just rolling the existing contract over until KMP was complete, Henning said that was a discussion option. “There’s pros and cons to that, he said, but pointed out that left the question of just when you rolled it over to. And in his opinion a roll-over agreement

would involve 90 per cent of the negotiating that a new one would. He suggested one thing that will be different from 2007 is this time people can visualise the new plant so there was a lot more certainty on that score. As for what changes are coming for the workforce in terms of the tasks they perform, Henning said they would be significant. For example, the paste plant would now be forming a paste anode. “Nobody’s dealt with a formed anode before. They’re all new jobs that we’ve not had here before. And while on the face of it the DC4 casting area would not see a lot of change, there will be an additional new casting plant so there would have to be training done there. One of the biggest changes will be new technology meant new equipment which in turn meant a sea change for maintenance crews. Noting they knew all the quirks of the old plant, Henning said they would now have to learn all the quirks of the new one. And while maintenance now made up about 25 per cent of the total operational workforce, he estimated that percentage would double in the new plant. In the end, Henning said the bottom line was

both the company and the union would like a contract. And pointed out, “Our history is that we get contracts...some prettier than others. CAW 2301 President Rick Belmont told the Northern Sentinel newspaper in Kitimat that he had no comment at this time. The union has, however, posted to their website an update to their negotiations which criticize the company for changing the anticipated post-modernization workforce. “The new number of bargaining unit employees planned for the modernized smelter is 699, said the union’s release, noting that previously it was thought to only go as low as 850, and anticipated to go as high as 1,000. The union’s discovery came about during an April 20th meeting with Rio Tinto Alcan management. They continue that there are plans for a number of positions which the company will contract out in hopes of finding other workers to do the job. “The examples given take contractors right inside our day-to-day activities. This was never contemplated when we reached agreement with the company and it represents a major break in credibility as we enter into 2012 negotiations.

EXPLORING THE PIPING TRADES
CONTRIBUTED / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - Terrace’s Relay for Life held May 12 was greatly assisted by the donations made by various corporate supporters. At top, Mr. Mike’s in Terrace provided $2000 of gift cards as prizes and volunteer recognition for this year’s Relay For Life. Here are Kara Charron and Danvis Dorrett of Mr. Mikes, and Lori Neid of the Canadian Cancer Society. Mr. Mikes once again provided Mr. Mikes burgers at the relay with proceeds going to the event. Firefighters spray down the area the fire was located.
Fire starts under downtown sidewalk By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Fire Department and the RCMP responded to a fire at the corner of 6th Street and Fulton in the downtown core. The fire, which caused the evacuation of the Prince Rupert Community Enrichment Society, was actually located under the sidewalk on the corner of the streets. Upon arrival late this afternoon, firefighters found a sofa, mattress and other personal affects aflame. Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Beckwith says the fire was contained before any damage could be done to the sidewalk area, and notes that the cause of the fire is undetermined.
Basketball class to be offered By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Basketball is undoubtedly the most popular sport in Prince Rupert, and starting next school year Grade 11 and Grade 12 students attending Charles Hays Secondary School will have the opportunity to take basketball as a course. “Basketball is of huge interest to students in this community. We’re very pleased to see this particular course being developed that has the rigger and the requirements that are necessary for a board authorized course,” said Superintendent Lynn Hauptman after the board of education approved the class at last week’s monthly school board meeting. Students taking Basketball 11/12 will have eight units to complete that will require 120 hours of instruction. The units will consist of team building strategies, rules of the game, footwork, passing and dribbling, and pivoting, offense and defense, individual skills/team concepts, rebounding, physical fitness training, care and prevention of injuries, and a community project. Students who are successful in the course will earn four of the 28 credits of electives needed to graduate. This course will not count towards the 16 grade 12 level credits mandatory for graduation. Students will be graded on their demonstration and application of the skills and rules of the game, on their fitness conditioning, technique and improvement, their community or middle school involvement, coaching assignments, and written and oral tests.

Kitimat councillor wants push on to promote recycling there By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - Councillor Mary Murphy wants to see the District of Kitimat promote recycling by supporting Kitimat Understanding the Environment (KUTE) by whatever cost is necessary. That was the thrust of her motion at the last council meeting where suggestions such as pitching in for a $9,000 upgrade of KUTE’s power system and donating the use of District trucks to collect paper waste was talked about. “If we’re serious about changing our carbon footprint we can’t use excuses like it’s too expensive or it’s not cost effective, she said. She spoke to the challenges for residents to recycle. For instance KUTE discontinued their truck paper pick-up and many people have no way to store paper or cardboard before bringing it to KUTE’s depot in the Service Centre; KUTE will refuse wet and damp paper recycling. Another portion of the motion asks the District to look at grants which may be available for recycling in Kitimat. Councillor Mario Feldhoff supported encouraging recycling but sought to have the motion
tabled to a committee of the whole meeting. “I think that the issues that councillor Murphy raises tonight, they should be put in context of a broader discussion, he said, noting there are many open motions from council on recycling subjects. Phil Germuth said he could support the tabling but only if a timeline was set to get the conversation started. “We keep tabling things and saying we’re going to do another Committee of the Whole and wait and wait and wait, he said. He said even if it meant having a special meeting, he wants to see progress.

Results from Drag Racing opener By Ed Evans THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - The “Season Opener” at the Terrace/Kitimat Regional Airport went off without a hitch, even with the weather threatening on Sunday. Several new cars were there with Prince Rupert’s Gord Hidber running his Chevy II to a respectible 6.4 second run. Pierre Amado brought out his new ride, a Duster. Pierre even beat his brother Paul in his Demon in a heads up race in time trials. “The only time he ran fast is when he raced me” said Paul jokingly after the run. It was a Daum Saturday as Tanner Daum took home “JR King of the YXT” and his father, Bruce Daum took “King of The YXT”. Wade Barnett in
his yellow Altered took “Gamblers” Sunday started out with rain sprinkling, threating to turn to rain, however it cleared up in the afternoon during eliminations, turning to hot and sunny. Delany Ribero won “Jr Dragster” cutting a perfect light (.500). Lou Ribero won 2nd place and Tanner Daum won his second podium position of the weekend with a third place in “Jr. Dragster” “Sportsman” was won by yours truly, Ed Evans. After making it to the semi finals I had to race last years defending champion Dana Amado. Dana lost by a fender and took home 3rd place, setting up the finals with Doug Ribero. Ribero took home 2nd Place. “Pro” had Craig Baker take out Brandon Roth in the finals and

John Simms in his bike took home 3rd place. “Super Pro” saw Paul Amado take out Kris Barnett in his Altered for 1st place and Russ Gutnechkt and his 50’s pickup winning 3rd place. There were not enough bikes/sleds this year for thier own class, so they have been rolled into the regular classes depending on how fast they run. A good weekend of racing was had by all. PRINCE RUPERT - Several staff at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre have been informed their hours are being cut back, and the future of their jobs is unclear. The reduction in hours came in the form of a letter stating that their hours would be cut – some from 40 hours per week to 25 hours per week and some seeing drastic cuts from 40 hours per week to eight hours per week – during the summer months “due to budget constraints”. The letter also indicated that a review of their positions would be done to determine how the workers’ jobs would look in terms of hours in September, with a decision expected in the first week of August. The affected employees were told they would have five days to indicate if they wanted to move to another position in the union, which could bump someone else from that position. “Where did this come from? The union wasn’t aware this was going on and is now scrambling to find out what’s happening. There was just no consultation at all and if they had tried to work together with the workers we could have looked at other options,” said one of the affected workers, who has been with the City for over two decades and doesn’t recall cuts this deep in the past. “The uncertainty is that we don’t know if we’re going to have our regular job in September. This is a total sideswipe...All it does is make people nervous. I’m high on the list of seniority and could bump to another job, so others are wondering what this could mean for them.” Director of recreation and community services Rudy Kelly, the reduction in hours is something done every year, although it has been expanded. “We do layoffs every summer, and at the pool we do a shutdown for three weeks to a month, which requires lay-offs for lifeguards and front desk workers. Because the Civic Centre traffic is a lot slower in the summer, we’re essentially down to kids camps, we reduce staff...This year we did reduce hours on some people we wouldn’t normally reduce hours for, like custodial staff, because we saw other opportunities to save money in the operations,” he said. “This was letting them know that during the summer we’ll be reviewing how we do things in terms of staffing and services. In the fall, when they come back they may not get up to the full hours that they had this fall.”

Port outlines plans for Cow Bay development at open house By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The meeting room at the Crest was filled last night as the Prince Rupert Port Authority hosted an open house to show the proposed development plan for the Cow Bay area. “We estimate there were about 75 people in attendance last night, which we were very pleased about,” said Prince Rupert Port Authority spokesperson Michael Gurney. The plan includes new buildings for shops located across from Atlin Terminal, where the parking lot is currently located, and on the grassy area located at the corner of 1st Avenue East and Cow Bay Road. Beside Atlin Terminal, where the old fish plant was located, plans call for another new building and a large covered area accommodate community gatherings, cruise passengers and other functions. The road through Cow Bay itself is also being redesigned to allow more of a pedestrian focus. The plan is for thinner, curbless
streets with planted trees separating the road from the pedestrian sidewalk. But the major changes proposed aren’t just on land, but on the water as well. Off of Atlin dock is, which currently houses boats from West Coast Launch and some larger boats that call on Prince Rupert, plans call for a significant number of new moorage spaces that would allow more personal watercraft to call on Prince Rupert as well as an extension of the dock itself to the far end of Northland Cruise dock. Acting as a breakwater to protect the new spaces, the proposal calls for a publicly accessible pier stretching into the harbour. According to Gurney, response to the proposed development was positive and well informed. “Some of the comments we received were about waterfront access, and people recognized that as more terminals develop there is a need to ensure public waterfront access...One resident said this was ‘a huge step in the right direction,” he said. “Other comments were about pedestrian access. One person said
they loved the public spaces with more pedestrian walkability, which they felt was important and we obviously agree with based on the boards...Others commented that it was attractive to tourists and resident alike. So it would be good for the economy as we try to attract people to come spend time and money in Prince Rupert, but would benefit resident as well. We had some people say it would be a nice place to go and have coffee while watching the sunset.” With the open house now complete Gurney said the port authority will be launching the environmental assessment for the project, though a date when that get underway has yet to be determined. “We’re very excited to see where this all leads because it is a community inspired vision,” he said. “Our team was really pleased to hear that the vision reflects the unique character of Prince Rupert. PRINCE RUPERT - On May 8 at 9:44 p.m. members of the Prince Rupert RCMP Detachment responded to a suspicious occurrence in the area of Hays Cove Avenue, in Prince Rupert, BC. Upon arrival to the scene police were advised that a young female had been approached by a older man in a van in the late afternoon. During a brief conversation with the driver he indicated that he knew the females mother and offered her a ride
home as she appeared to be cold. As this person was a stranger to the girl, she fled the area and ran to a nearby family members residence. The witness described the vehicle and driver as the following; - Silver van (unknown licence plate) - Caucasian male - 30’s - Short brown hair (possibly balding) “At this point in time we are looking to identify the driver and vehicle,” stated Cst. Ericson, spokesman with the Prince Rupert RCMP.
“We are also appealing to the public for any information that may assist us in furthering this investigation”. As this investigation is ongoing, the Prince Rupert RCMP is asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Prince Rupert RCMP Detachment at 250-6270700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-TIPS (8477). Please remember that Crime Stoppers pays cash for information that leads to an arrest. We don’t want your name, just your information.
PRINCE RUPERT - On May 4, the season’s first and largest cruise ship, the Holland America Zaandam, docked in Prince Rupert for about 10 hours with approximately 1,400 passengers getting of the ship and adventuring the community, and seeing what it has to offer. The Prince Rupert Port Authority recently announced that feedback from the Holland America Zaandam passengers and crew were overwhelmingly positive, which supports the port’s strategy to attract additional cruise visits to Prince Rupert. “We learned that Prince Rupert’s unique offering of worldclass excursions and community hospitality resonated powerfully with passengers aboard the Holland America Zaandam,” said Shaun Stevenson, Vice President of Trade Development for the Prince Rupert Port Authority. “This adds significant strength to our efforts to attract regular cruise visits within the next few years.” Cruise ship passengers were greeted by Grade 1 students from Annunciation, who welcomed passengers by singing “Oh Canada” to them as they left the ship. Mayor Jack Mussallem and two Mounties greeted passengers before they moved on to either go on an excursion tour, check out the small market and booths that were set up or check out the various shopping in the community. The Cruise Task Force organized a number of things to entertain passengers, as well as many volunteers serving as ambassadors and interpreters throughout the day, including Seamus McConville, a Grade 11 student from Charles Hays Secondary
School. “I liked meeting the passengers and sharing stuff I know about my hometown. All the appreciative things they said to us made us feel really good. My friends and I will definitely be volunteering again.” Many visitors from the cruise ship were given guest satisfaction surveys to fill out before they left. Even though the weather was rainy with low temperatures, passenger responses were almost exclusively positive. One couple reported, “Of 101 countries visited in 32 years, we’ve never had such a warm welcome. This is one of the most organized, best stops on our cruise.” Some passengers even indicated that they would be writing the cruise line to urge that Prince Rupert be included as a permanent port of call for future Holland America cruises. Cruise ship passengers rated the community on categories including friendliness, service, shopping, cleanliness, tour variety and signage. All of these categories scored over 80 per cent, with nearly 50 per cent of guests citing the welcoming of the community as their most memorable experience. Later in the season, Prince Rupert will be welcoming vessels from Regent Seven Seas and Silversea Cruises. Since the new terminal was opened in 2004, Prince Rupert has hosted over half a million-cruise ship passengers generating money for the community. The new terminal is located strategically for Alaska cruise itineraries on the Inside Passage, while being perched on the edge of the Great Bear Rainforest.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of David, loving husband, father, son, son-inlaw, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Dave leaves behind his loving wife Elaine of 27 years, daughter Jessica (Chelcy) and son Jared. Dave is also survived by Gerry and Bonnie Flann, Norman Flann, Blake Flann, Garret, Brenda, Megan and Chase Woelders, his many aunts, uncles and cousins in both Canada and Denmark. Robert Griffiths Hutchings
1921 - 2012 On behalf of Alice and all of “Hutch’s” family, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the people of Stewart for their continued support over the years and especially during the last days of his life. He expressed, gratefully, how the snow removal just happened whenever it was needed, how the sand appeared in his walkway so that they wouldn’t slip on the ice, and when he couldn’t drive any longer how there was always a ride to pick him up to take him to the King Ed for coffee or out of town for a medical appointment - these are just a few of the many things his friends in Stewart did to show their support and we, as a family, are also grateful! When he could no longer make it out of the house he had many visitors and as far as he was concerned “the more the merrier” - he smiled every time someone came through the door. A huge thank you as well to the Dr’s, Nurses and staff from the Stewart Hospital who always gave him the very best care, for all the delicious food that was delivered to us (either at home or for his Memorial), to the King Ed for providing the venue and many other services, Netonia for all the photo’s and to each and every one of you who made a difference in Hutch’s life - there are so many I can’t name you all. We will always remember your love and kindness. The Hutchings Family.
Mabel Emes
July 24, 1919 - May 10, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Mabel Emes of Kitimat (formerly of Prince Rupert). She was pre-deceased by our Father, Mike after 60 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her 6 brothers and sisters and her son-in-law Pat Bell. Left behind to mourn are her four children: sons Arthur (Jo), Arnold (Sheila), and Micheal (Carol), and her only daughter Gloria Dielschneider (Gene Sr.). She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, her daughters-in-law Ruth and Reta, her sister-in-law Lillian Emes, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. We would like to extend a special Thank You to Dr. Wahl, the nurses and staff of The Mountainview Lodge, and the family and friends that have helped us through this time. To honour Mabel, a tea in celebration of her life will be held on May 26, 2012 at 1:00 at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. She will be laid to rest in Two Hills, Alberta at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mabel’s name to The Mountainview Lodge Activation Program.

TERRACE – Above, the Caledonia Bears boys rugby team trounced the Prince Rupert Rainmakers 43-0 at zones here at the Northwest Community College field May 11. Cal then beat Smithers 14-10 to clinch a spot at its first rugby provincials, to be held at the end of the month in Abbotsford.
KITIMAT - Twenty Swimmers from the Kitimat Marlins attended the Prince George long Course (50 meter pool) Invitational Swim Meet this past weekend. It was the Marlins’ first long course swim meet of the year and many of the swimmers first long course experience ever. Competition was tough as Prince George Swim Club is one of the strongest in BC. As well teams from Williams Lake, Quesnel, Chetwyn, Prince Rupert, Terrace and Smithers were in attendance. Three Marlin swimmers reached new qualifying standards. All three had never raced in a long course pool before making the feat extra special. First year swimmer Brander Pacheco (13) reached his first AAA Provincial standard in the 13 year old boy 100 meter butterfly. “It’s very rare to have a first year competitive swimmer reach the AAA standard in their first year of swimming. I have been coaching for 15 years, 9 as a head coach and have only had two other swimmers reach AAA in their first season. He has worked hard for it,” commented head coach Jason Cathers. Pacheco a medalist at the AA short course (25 meter pool) Provincial Championship in Chilliwack earlier this year will now have the opportunity to compete in the AAA long course Provincial Championships early July in Rich-
mond. Coming off a one season break from swim club Zachary Dumas (12) hit his first AA Provincial qualifying time standard in the 12 year old boy 200 meter backstroke. Dumas had a great meet with big personal best times in all of his races narrowly missing the AA standard in other events. The 200 backstroke was his last event of the weekend and he decided it his time and swam an inspired race to reach the standard. Dumas will now have the opportunity to compete at the AA Provincial Championships in Victoria in late June. Raychel Davies (11) in her last swim meet as an 11 year old girl achieved her first AA Provincial time standard in the 50 meter freestyle. Unfortunately Davies will be 12 when the AA champs roll around in late June so will need to re qualify with the faster 12 year old girl time standard to attend in Victoria. Making the largest one swim improvement for the swim meet was Nicholas Cordeiro (13). Cordeiro was very nervous before his 200 meter freestyle. He turned those nerves into speed though as he took off 42 seconds in the event. Cordeiro was also one of seven swimmers from the Marlins that swam 100 % personal best times in all 8 races. Other Marlins that accomplished this feat were Amanda Craft (15), Katherine Ocsovai (13), Alivia Salema (11), Zachary Dumas (12), Madison Szmata (11) and Makenna Fisk (12).
