The newly-launched Basin-Boundary Employment Lands Inventory Project will directly address an issue faced by many communities: access to land to accommodate existing business expansion and future investment and economic growth. “This project will provide several important deliverables,â€? says Rob Gay, General Manager of Community Futures East Kootenay, the lead organization on the project. “The Âżrst of these is a comprehensive inventory of employment lands.â€? The project deÂżnes employment lands as lands that generate economic wealth, including: agricultural lands; lands zoned or designated for heavy industry, light industry and commercial (non-retail); First Nations designated employment lands; brown and greyÂżeld sites; and Crown lands available for development. “A better understanding of the availability and type of employment lands will help the region to retain and attract businesses and investment,â€? says Gay. “This information is a key tool to ensuring economic growth, and helping to see Accessing page 3

the results and identify collaborative regional solutions. We will look closely at the question: What is our region’s ability to accommodate economic growth?” In addition to providing a comprehensive inventory of employment

It’ll be cool to see how our team does and where we go with it all.” The 6’2, 220 lb. forward just completed his ¿fth season with the Western Hockey League’s Ice. Premier bitten by pest problem by Tom Fletcher Premier Christy Clark has a new political problem buzzing around her of¿ce. A year ago, the newly appointed premier was looking to change the channel for an unpopular government grappling with the fallout of the harmonized sales tax. Newly appointed NDP leader Adrian Dix was touting an idea that is all the rage with urban folks, a ban on “cosmetic pesticides.” All the better B.C. communities already have one, starting with Clark’s old stomping ground of Port Moody in 2003. So she ¿gured she’d better run to the front of this parade, swipe a popular policy from the opposition and do something to rede¿ne the B.C. Liberal Party after the tax-cutting, regulation-repealing decade of Gordon Campbell. But ¿rst an all-party committee would hold hearings around the province, chaired by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Bennett presented the committee’s report last week, and one could see what was coming. Bennett is the riÀe-toting outdoorsman who recently called on his government to abandon the carbon tax, saying it’s silly to keep pretending B.C. can change the world’s climate. He was recently appointed by Clark to co-chair the B.C. Liberal Party policy committee for next year’s election,
a strong signal of the party’s rightward shift in response to the B.C. Conservative threat. Bennett concluded after 10 months of hearings that the public aversion to common lawn and garden herbicides is based on “chemophobia” that Àourishes due to scienti¿c illiteracy. That statement is both politically dangerous and absolutely correct. I ¿rst covered this issue in the Okanagan 25 years ago, when environmentalists fought the use of Roundup by the forests ministry to knock down brush and promote new trees. The evidence boils down to this: these complex organic compounds break down in a short period to simpler, common components that pose no threat. Thus, with buffer zones around watercourses and temporary entry restrictions, they are safe. Unfortunately, most people know little or nothing about chemistry and refuse to believe this. It’s part of the scienti¿c nonsense trend that has grown in B.C. society for decades. We have parents turning their backs on routine immunization because of superstitions about vaccines. We have people panicked about imaginary health effects of smart meters, egged on by shoddy, sensationalist media reporting. The parallels between local government responses to smart meter hysteria and this scienti¿cally ignorant push
against “pesticides” is telling. As Bennett put it, when someone becomes convinced her child is at risk, “that mum is pretty darn compelling when she goes to council.” Few have the courage to stand up to that. The committee sought advice from Health Canada, whose scientists approve conditions of use for chemicals. Health Canada representative Lindsay Hansen said B.C. was the ¿rst province to ask for its advice, despite the fact that most provinces have imposed bans. These bans are political, not public safety measures, University of Guelph toxicologist Keith Solomon told MLAs. The committee also learned that “cosmetic” use accounts for only ¿ve per cent of pesticide use. Most of it is in agriculture, forestry and commercial pest control, with no ban proposed. MLAs in farming areas signalled their concern over the effect of this urban gesture politics. Backyard fruit trees go unsprayed and pests spread to orchards and ¿elds. We have large areas of agricultural land reserve, but 85 per cent of the people who live in those areas don’t farm. The NDP is content to fan public fear and ignore evidence, as with smart meters and oil pipelines. The premier has a choice here. She can do the popular thing, or the right thing.

Pesticide committee report labelled weak by cancer society Submitted
BC’s top health organizations are expressing disappointment after a BC legislative committee on cosmetic pesticides released a report today calling for weak restrictions on lawn and garden pesticides. “If these recommendations become law, they will not protect all British Columbian children from being exposed to unnecessary chemicals and possible carcinogens, said Barbara Kaminsky, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon. “We waited years for the BC government to follow the lead of other provinces and BC municipalities, and this is the result? The report was slow in coming and is weak in content. It is disappointing overall. The health groups – which include the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), the Lung Association, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Public Health Association of BC – had requested strong legislation banning the sale and use of all pesticides for lawns, gardens and non-agricultural landscaping. “Doctors are displeased that, given all we know about pesticides and illness, the committee would offer something so weak said CAPE Executive Director Gideon Forman. There is broad public support for cosmetic pesticide legislation in BC. Over 70% of British Columbians support provincial legislation to restrict pesticide use, according to polling commissioned by the Canadian Cancer Society in 2010. More than 35 BC municipalities have already adopted bylaws restricting the cosmetic use of pesticides, and delegates at the 2008 and 2009 Union of BC Municipalities Conventions voted in favour of resolutions calling on the BC government to ban the use and sale of cosmetic pesticides province-wide. During the two public consultations that the BC government has conducted (in 2010 and 2011), some 8,000 British Columbians responded to each consultation and the vast majority of respondents were in support of province-wide legislation. Most recently, health and environmental organizations succeeded
in making pesticides an issue in the Port MoodyCoquitlam by-election. “To say that a lot of people are afraid of chemicals because they don’t understand the science is insulting to
the majority of British Columbians in support of legislation and those who responded to the committee’s consultation, says Forman. Considerable evidence supports a link between
pesticides and cancer incidence, reproductive problems and neurological diseases. A deÂżnitive cause and effect relationship between cosmetic pesticide use and cancer is unlikely
to be Âżrmly established, but enough is known to be prudent and prevent exposure to children, especially when the use of these chemicals is unnecessary. “We’ve conducted
polling and an awareness campaign and in response thousands of citizens contacted the BC government in support of a ban, says Forman. “Both the Premier and the Health Minister
supported eliminating the use of cosmetic pesticides during the Liberal Party leadership race and we hope that they will continue to do so, says Forman.

What’s new in hearing aid technology? As with most other technological devices, digital signal processing technology in hearing aids improves every year allowing users to enjoy greater clarity, hearing in background noise, and an improved quality of life. Technology in hearing aids has moved from an era of basic analog to fully digital, with literally thousands of possible adjustments and changes that can be made throughout the life of the hearing aids. Hearing aids are hundreds of times more flexible than ever before, and Audiologists are better able to precision match the output of the hearing aids with the patient’s specific hearing loss. The end result is a more natural sound quality and much better hearing in background noise. As with all technology however, there are limitations, and success is often dependent on a number of factors including consistent use and ensuring that the right level of technology is selected based on an individual’s specific needs. There are several levels of technology available in hearing aids, each with different features and benefits. If you think you may benefit from hearing aids, it is important to have your hearing evaluated by a certified and registered Audiologist and determine what options are best for you and your specific needs.
Technology that helps for background noise The biggest concern that most people have with or without hearing aids, is interfering background noise. Background noise can make it difficult to understand speech, such as you may find in a restaurant, group of people, or driving in a car. New technology uses two means of reducing background noise relative to speech: directional microphones and multiple dimension signal processing. Directional microphones on hearing aids help to boost sound coming from in front and reduce sound coming from the sides and behind. This directional benefit assumes that we want to hear what is coming from in front, such as a person talking at a table across from us, and reduce what is coming from behind or from the sides. This would be a common situation in a restaurant, or at the grocery store hearing a clerk. New digital technology is capable of reducing unwanted noise by analyzing sound signals in multiple dimensions. This allows for sound to be categorized or weighted as either noise or desired sounds (speech). A program within the hearing aid is then able to reduce unwanted noise with minimal impact on desired sound, such as speech and music. This level of sophistication has only been made possible through advanced digital signal processing. Essentially, hearing speech is improved, even when there is unwanted background noise.
Multi-band technology for improved clarity of speech and sound comfort New technology can now divide sound into different channels or bands from low pitches to high pitches. Hearing aids with an increased number of bands can greatly improve the prescription fit and allow for more natural sound quality and greater clarity, particularly for speech. Further, loud uncomfortable sounds and soft pleasant sounds can be controlled separately in each band, allowing for greater comfort and ease of hearing. With advanced digital processing with multiple bands, birds chirping and soft spoken children can be heard plainly, while sharp noises like dishes and paper rattling will be not be uncomfortably loud.
Automatic vs manual control With today’s advanced digital processing, hearing aids can be programmed to be fully automatic. That is to say, hearing aids can self-adjust depending on the specific environment. For instance, going from home, to a coffee group, to driving in a car, to a medical appointment, the hearing aids will change how they respond to the incoming sound and optimize speech, while filtering out unwanted noise. However, some patients prefer a level of manual control, and hearing aids can come with volume controls and program options either on the hearing aids or through separate wireless remote controls that are paired to the hearing aids. For the majority of patients, automatic is the best option as it reduces the work that an individual has to do.

(speaker) that is placed close to the eardrum. This style of hearing aid not only reduces feedback (whistling) but is also able to amplify sounds more effectively and naturally because the sound source is close to the eardrum. This style is also the most comfortable available with most wearers reporting that they are not able to feel anything occluding the ear and that it feels as though they are not even wearing a hearing aid. For the majority of patients, this type of hearing aid in the best option available.

Completely in the canal ‘invisible’ technology Completely in the canal (CIC) hearing aids are often promoted as the best option available mainly because they are the most discreet virtually invisible hearing aids on the market. However, the disadvantages greatly outweigh the advantages as compared to other styles of hearing aids. Because the hearing aid is deep in the ear canal, it is more prone to wax and moisture, resulting in a decreased lifespan and an increase in maintenance issues over time. Further, the CIC style fully plugs the ear canal making it less comfortable than other models. In addition, the vent diameter size on the hearing aid is often very limited resulting in an ‘echo’ sound quality in a person’s own voice while talking or chewing. CIC hearing aids also lack the room to fit directional microphones, resulting in background noise being more of an issue than with other styles.
Wireless Bluetooth technology A recent advance in technology utilizes Bluetooth or ‘wireless’ connectivity to other devices such as cell phones and the TV. The advantage with this technology is that cell phone/TV sound quality is corrected for the hearing loss, hands-free, and can be channelled to both hearing aids, creating a stereo sound quality in both ears. For the TV, the sound quality can be dramatically improved, as the sound from the TV is directly received in the hearing aids. In addition, the wireless technology can allow the hearing aids to communicate with separate external microphones devices. This separate microphone can be placed on the table in a restaurant, or given to the minister or priest at church or other services, and can dramatically improve the speech to noise ratio, thus allowing for better clarity of speech even at significant distances. Importantly, this technology is very user friendly and your Audiologist can set up the system to function automatically. The wireless technology is also compatible for home phones that have compatible wireless features.

If finances are the most important issue consider the following: a house situated in a downtown area may be twice the price of one in the suburbs. However, the extra travelling time will cost more. What to do? Generally speaking, a practical house should
be situated close to the workplace or at least to public transportation, schools and hospitals, grocery stores, leisure centres, gyms and a shopping centre. The neighbourhood should also be agreeable, clean and safe. To know this, check with city hall if there are Neighbourhood Watch programs in the area. In the country, if you are a freelance worker, does the area have cable and access to highspeed Internet?
No matter what kind of environment you seek, it must be remembered that neighbourhoods and populations evolve over time. Everything could change with the arrival
of a bar or other type of business. Take the time to find out about municipal policies regarding development and changes in zoning laws.

Cancer does not stop for nighttime Relay for Life
“
“I chose to volunteer for the Relay for Life because ultimately, I want to put an end to Cancer. It’s a fun time to celebrate life, make friends and catch up with the old ones. It gives me hope to be around survivors. Last year, the amount of support from the community was touching and I wanted to be a part of it” C.G.
Submitted Relay For Life starts at dusk and ends at the next day’s morning. The light and darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while undergoing treatment. The Relay begins when the sun is setting. This symbolizes the time that the person has been diagnosed with cancer. The day is getting darker and this represents the cancer patient’s state of mind as they feel that their life is coming to an end. As the evening goes on
it gets colder and darker, just as the emotions of the cancer patient do. 1:00 to 2:00 a.m. represents the time when the cancer patients start treatments. They become exhausted, some sick, not wanting to go on, possibly wanting to give up. As a participant, you have been walking and feel much the same way. You are tired, want to sleep, maybe even want to go home, but you cannot. You cannot stop or give up, just as the cancer patient cannot stop or give up. 4:00 to 5:00 a.m. symbolizes the coming of the end of treatment for the cancer patient. Once

again they are tired, but they know they will make it. The sun rising represents the end of treatment for the cancer patient. They see the light at the end of the tunnel and know that life will go on. The morning light brings on a new day full of life and excitement for new beginnings for the cancer patient. As a participant, you will feel the brightness of the morning and know that the end of the Relay is close at hand. When you leave the Relay, think of the cancer patient leaving their last treatment. Just as you are exhausted and weak, so is that person after treatment. But there is hope in the new day! The money raised at Relay will support patient services, lifesaving research, prevention education, and advocacy
efforts…and that is why we Relay!

By Tricia Hedrick My name is Tricia Hedrick, and I’ve been participating in Relay For Life for 3 years. This year I’m walking with the FirstOnSite Team. I started out doing Relay to remember the family members that we’ve lost to Cancer and honour the Survivors… In memory of grandma - Olive Mother of 16, grandmother to more than 40, with countless greatgrandchildren. She was truly an angel to us all. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1979, fought this disease and lost. She passed away in June 1986 when I was 10 years old – Forever leaving a hole in our hearts. I miss her every day. In memory of auntie Helen Loving mother, devoted wife and beloved
grandmother. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1996, battled hard for her life, only to pass away in 1998. She initiated her own genetic testing that, after her death, showed she had a BRCA2 gene. This has given our family the opportunity for early screening, preventative surgery, and genetic counseling. This resulting genetic testing on our family found that 80% of those tested, including myself, have the BRCA2 gene. With this gene, lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer is hugely greater than the normal population risk, substantially more than double - and that is simply terrifying. In memory of auntie Carol Born on Christmas, died on Easter in my mom’s arms on the way
We strongly support "Relay for Life" “A Tradition of Trust... The volunteers, ...Guaranteed” attendees and all whom help
to the hospital. She was 20 yrs old. I believe she is my guardian angel and always feel her near. Her cancer went undiagnosed. In memory of uncle Ron Uncle Ron died from esophageal cancer in 2004. I will always remember him as a gentle man, playing his guitar and singing at Deka
Lake. In honour of auntie Barb Diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2010 and is winning this ¿ght!! May God bless her and keep her healthy. The Canadian Cancer Society was such a huge support to her and Ron during their times of need. But this year’s for

my mom, Susie. Last May at Relay For Life, my mom was crazy enough to shave her head and donate her hair for this cause. One month later, she was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL). She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments this year and is now well on the road to recovery. She is the bravest woman I know… This year she’s walking the survivors lap!!! I am so grateful to the Canadian Cancer Society for driving her to her appointments when I couldn’t be there for her. Please support Relay for Life! Please help ¿ght for a cure! I believe there is hope!

You thought you knew Relay for Life by Lori Stevenson “I Relay because I ran out of ¿ngers and toes counting up the family, friends and relatives who have had their lives touched by some form of cancer. My dad died of lung cancer, an uncle has had prostate cancer, right now a cousin is having a bone marrow transplant, a friend has just been diagnosed with throat cancer - the list is long. Prevention, improved treatments and support services - we need it all. It will provide hope instead of fear!” L.M. “My mom never got to see me enter high school, graduate, or go to college, and she’ll never get to see me get married, buy my ¿rst home, or have children. Cancer stole these memories from me, and they stole her life from her. Words cannot describe the severe hurt and suffocating pain attributed with a loved one battling and having their life stolen by cancer, yet too many people can relate to this feeling. The Canadian Cancer Society is making a difference by funding leading cancer research which leads to new treatments, by supporting those battling with support programs, information and
personal assistance, and by leading change in health promotion and lobbying government in an effort to prevent cancer. No family should ever have to experience what mine did; no family should be torn apart by cancer. This is why I volunteer. This is why I Relay.” J.B. The Canadian Cancer Society is the largest national charitable funder of cancer research in Canada. We fund the best researchers in BC and across the country on all cancers. We are so much more than just research however - we offer practical and emotional support programs when you need us. But you know, I hope you never need us. I hope you never need to take advantage of our ¿nancial support programs to subsidize expenses incurred as you travel out of area to undergo your cancer treatment. I hope you never ¿nd yourself a guest at one of our economical and welcoming patient lodges while away from home for your medical care. I pray that the summer never comes where you will send your child or grandchild for an action packed, fun ¿lled week for kids with cancer at
Camp Goodtimes. It is my sincere wish that you will never have to call your volunteer support peer -matched to you through Cancer Connection - in the middle of the night. To talk about your diagnosis, treatment, side effects, prognosis; or simply your hopes and fears. And though I hope you never have to call our Cancer Information Service for information on your or a loved one’s cancer diagnosis or treatment; I hope you will call them with any cancer related questions you may have. These highly trained specialists provide the most up to date information in a way that is easy to understand, in more than 100 languages, helping you to make informed decisions about your health. While I hope you never need us, I ask you to hear us when we say that about half of cancers are preventable, and initiatives to reduce the risk of cancer have the greatest potential to save lives. The Canadian Cancer Society uses public education, health promotion, community action, and advocacy to government to advance cancer prevention – because by preventing cancer in the ¿rst place, we all win. I truly hope you never need us - but if you do, I want you to know that we are there. We are
able to offer services and supports such as these only through the hard work of our fundraisers and the generosity of our donors. For ten years the Creston Valley has played host to the Canadian Cancer Society’s largest fundraising event, the Relay For Life. We want to enter into our second decade stronger, bigger, and better than the Relay that you have come to appreciate. Our goal is elevate Relay from an event to an experience – for all who take part. We want more teams, more survivors, more caregivers, more participants – including families and children. We are reinventing and refreshing ourselves with more ceremony, more activities, more storytelling, more of what you have come to expect from Relay For Life! The Canadian Cancer Society invites all Creston residents to get involved: • volunteer to assist with event organization • volunteer to help out the day of the event • organize a group of friends/family to participate as a team • sponsor someone who is participating…. absolutely no experience necessary! Annie’s Angels is a team of dynamic young ladies who lead very busy lives, but somehow ¿nd time to support the cause of cancer which has touched all their lives. The team, lead by ace fundraiser Betty Martin, has already raised over $5,825 with a goal of $8,000. Another really young lady from Amanda Kerr’s team of the “Rack Pack” is Rayann Stuart, who has
already raised $275. Rayann watched as her sister Shaylee donated her beautiful long hair at last year’s relay to the Locks of Love. Now Rayann promises:“If my sister can do it, so can I!” These youngsters clearly represent the spirit of renewal for this year’s event. Many thanks to those who have volunteered countless hours over the past 10 years to make Relay happen in Creston. The battle against
this terrible disease has made great progress, but still 60 people from BC and the Yukon are diagnosed with the disease every day. The event has consistently provided the community with an opportunity to come together and support those who are battling cancer as well as to show support to the people who have lost loved ones to the disease. This year the event returns to the Alex
Nilsson Field at the Community Complex on Saturday, June 2nd, from 10 am to 10 pm. Please help us continue the tradition of caring in the Creston Valley. Let’s kick cancer out of our community. For further information or to register , check our website www.relaybc.ca/creston2012 – it’s a mine of interesting and complete information.

Jen loved children and found a career, helping and supporting, as a youth counsellor. She always had a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews. She made time to help and listen to anyone. Along her journey she had a gift that made many friends and connections in her life. Jen was a very creative and a fantastic artist. She expressed herself through drawing and painting, decorating, cooking and a flair for life. She loved camping, rafting, golfing, skiing and loved to do any recreation that involved her family. Gardening and cooking became true loves that she excelled at. During her final years of health struggles Jen was gifted from her angel Hali. Both Hali and Denise spent endless hours sharing and providing support. The exceptional care Jen received at Joseph Creek made her final years very comfortable. Along the way she developed many meaningful relationships with staff and residents. They will miss her. Jen is survived by her husband Bill, her son Ryan, her mom Denise, Nana Shaw, her brothers Steven (Debbie), James Ashley, David (Coleen), Lindsay, Tianna, Jennelle, Brad (Janice), Emma and many aunts and uncles. A memorial service for Jen was held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 11:00 am at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook. Her Interment followed in Westlawn Cemetery. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Jen may do so to the: Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9. The family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care Jen received from Dr. MacDonald, as his care went far beyond just a patient. We're all thankful she's now reunited with her twin sister Tanya. We will miss you. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

For those looking to drive the Stylish and made to be driven, the 2012 Taurus doesn’t disappoint absolute cream of the crop

Some are calling the mid-sized Elantra the best car Hyundai ever built–they may be right. Overall: Mid-sized sedan just might be best car Hyundai has ever built, and in light of what Hyundai is building these days, that’s saying a lot. Drivetrain: The 1.8-litre engine is standard across the line; how does 4.9 l/100 km on the highway sound? What’s hotter looking than a Hyundai Sonata and pulls down better fuel economy? The Hyundai Elantra, of course. Hyundai’s California design studio gets the credit for creating the Elantra’s silhouette that was brought to market for the 2011 model year. The stylists were obviously pretty satis¿ed with their work on the 2011 Sonata since they clearly stuck to the same basic pattern, albeit in a somewhat smaller scale. The swoops and swirls theme that’s visible along the Elantra’s Àanks and rear end also show up on the ultra-modern dashboard: it’s a genuine work of art. From
a technical standpoint, the Elantra is a mid-sized car, even though overall interior volume has decreased ever so slightly when compared to the previous model. In its defense, Hyundai can point to a slightly larger trunk that was already considered voluminous. What has also increased is the output. The Elantra’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine is smaller than the previous 2.0-litre unit, but the 1.8 puts out 148 horsepower a gain of 10 over the 2.0. It’s also about 34 kilograms lighter and is rated at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission (6.9/4.9 with optional six-speed automatic). New for the 2012 model year is an ActiveECO systerm for automatic-equipped cars that basically updates the transmission shift programming and engine fuel mapping for claimed gains in fuel econ-
omy in the seven per cent range. Base Elantra L models include the usual poweroperated assortment plus a six-speaker audio system. Stepping up to GL edition adds air conditioning, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free communications. Atop the lineup, the Limited provides a nearly unlimited amount of content, such as leather seats (heated front and back), power sunroof and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Limited is also the way to go if you wish to dial in a touch-screen navigation system. For 2012, the Elantra’s electrically (as opposed to belt-) powered steering rack has been adjusted for a more natural feel. In case you were wondering, the Elantra wagon, called the Touring, is still around on the older platform with its 138-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.

With all-wheel-drive as part of the package, the muscular 2012 Taurus gets you there in style and comfort. Overall: With a facelifted Taurus coming next year, other than a new paint hue, the company is leaving well enough alone for 2012. Drivetrain: Ubiquitous would describe the widely used 263-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine that drives the front wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmission; the “raging bull” SHO adds twin turbochargers and other performance upgrades to the V6, causing 365 horses to enervate all four wheels. It’s amazing what a little sexy sheetmetal and some modern technology can do to a car. The Ford Taurus that rolled out in 2010 is based on the boring, forgettable, rental-Àeet fodder that occupied most of the last the decade in Five Hundred then Taurus form. The 2012 Taurus gets motivation from the familiar 263-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 found in a host of Ford products. Base models get the
standard six-speed automatic transmission with a system that prevents the car from rolling backward on an incline. Mid-level and upscale editions are upgraded with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles and a rev-matching program for smoother downshifts while all-wheel-drive is as an option on the latter. However, all-wheel-drive is a standard part of the fullblooded SHO package. This raging bull is ¿tted with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 that generates 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The basic chassis architecture gets signi¿cant stiffening and retuning to improve driving precision and ride comfort. Other highlights include a unique grille, rear-deck spoiler, sport-tuned suspension, 19- or optional 20-inch wheels, leather-coated interior, 10-way adjustable front seat and push-button start. Interior highlights in-
clude a Mustang-inspired dashboard and control-panel layout that smoothly Àows into a sizable Àoor console. The extensive list of available add-ons includes an exterior keyless-entry keypad and adaptive cruise control that maintains a safe distance from vehicles traveling in front. Also available is blindspot warning, an alert system that indicates when other vehicles are approaching from the sides while you’re backing up, and multi-contour massaging front seats. As a parental-control program, Ford’s MyKey mutes the audio system until the seat belts are buckled (and restricts audio volume thereafter), keeps the traction- and stability-control functions engaged and limits top speed to 80 mph.

AUCTION
This year the radio auction will begin with the first 8 articles and operate on a rotation basis, such as No. 1 auctioned, No. 9 on board; No. 2 auctioned, No. 10 on board; No. 3 auctioned, No. 11 on board; and so on. There will be an item auctioned every 1.5 minutes. This means any given articles will be on the board for 10 -12 minutes before being auctioned off. By using this rotation system, we feel there will be a continual interest in the auction items. The announcer will give you a warning on the next item to be auctioned. High bids and bidders will be continually announced over the air. When the auction is underway, the items will be sold to the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer. In the event 2 or more people are bidding on an item at the time of closing, it is suggested you stay on the phone until bidding is completed. The phone bidder will have the last chance to bid. When placing your bid by phone, please advise us of your name and phone number. If you are the highest bidder, you will be contacted. Items can be picked up at the Tamarack Centre during the auction times or on Friday, May 25 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm and Saturday, May 26 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.
