Four Merritt RCMP officers are being recognized by the BCAA Road Safety Foundation for their efforts in removing 76 impaired drivers from roads in 2011. Cpl. Doug Hardy, Const. Victoria Taylor, Const. Justin Mosher and Const. Brock Hedrick were all honoured as members of Alexa’s Team 2011 early this month in Kelowna. “Having four from here is

really good because there were a lot of drunk drivers taken off the road by just those four,” said Merritt RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore. She said a “fairly high” number of drunk drivers are on Merritt streets. “We either get calls from the public about possible impaired drivers, or our officers are driving around at night and they find them,” she said. Alexa’s Team, formed in 2008, has expanded from 26 RCMP and municipal police officers to

355 today. Alexa’s Team started after the death of four-year-old Alexa Middelaer, who died when a drunk driver hit her while she was feeding a horse at the side of a road. Laura Middelaer, Alexa’s mother said: “These are the men and women who are fundamentally responsible for making our roads safe. They have delivered on their promise in an exceptional and meaningful way, and we are proud to be recognizing their excellence today, in honour

of our daughter, Alexa.” The team processed 32,743 drivers since its creation. “The story of Alexa has inspired police officers to join Alexa’s Team,” stated Allan Lamb, president and Chief Operating Officer of the BCAA Road Safety Foundation. “We are proud to be able to celebrate their diligence and commitment to enforcing impaired driving laws.” Officers needed to remove at least 12 impaired drivers over the previous year to be honoured. The officers laid crimi-

nal charges, issued the new Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and issued administrative driving prohibitions, IRP fails and IRP refusals. ICBC joined Alexa’s Team this year. “We’re proud to be a part of this remarkable initiative that helps get impaired drivers off the road,” said Fiona Temple, ICBC’s director of road safety. “We’re committed to road safety to help prevent such tragedies. We want everyone to get to where they’re going and return home safely.”

Ryan Bigelow, 5, and his parents, Dan and Kay-dee, welcome newborn Mikayla to the family after she was born at the side of the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Kamloops, May 7. Phillip Woolgar/Herald

‘Coquihalla Baby’ home safe and sound Parents manage roadside birth en route to delivery room in Kamloops hospital By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

A mother and father are happily at home after the newest member of their family was delivered at the side of the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Kamloops last week. Merritt resident Dan Bigelow delivered his daughter, Mikayla, en route to a delivery room in Kamloops. He and his wife, Kay-dee, thought they had enough time to reach the hospital when they left Merritt shortly after 2 a.m. on Monday, May 7. “It was pretty terrifying at first, but I just had to do it,” Dan said. “Adrenaline kind of took over and I

didn’t really think about the terrifying aspect again until after.” Dan didn’t have a lot of time to respond, as Mikayla was born about 10 minutes after Kay-dee’s water broke, about 40 kilometres outside Merritt. Before the delivery, Dan called 9-1-1, where he reached Emergency Medical Dispatcher Corey de Deller. “This is the first time I have ever had a full child delivery en route to the hospital,” de Deller said. “I’m so amazed I had such a great, calm caller. If you’re going to have a dad, you want Dan Bigelow as your dad.” He said emergency callers are often extremely panicked and incoherent, but Dan was calm throughout

the process. de Deller received a stork pin, which is given to dispatchers who help deliver a baby. “You know, other dispatchers have come up to me and said, ‘I have been here for 18 years and I still haven’t gotten my stork pin yet,” de Deller said, noting he began his employment in October 2011. “In this situation, it was a matter of time and circumstance and we were able to end up having to do it on the side of the road.” He said he bought the couple a teddy bear that he intends to present to them. He is also planning to give them the stork pin. “I think he deserves [the pin]

more than myself,” he said. “I basically just guided him through it but he was able to make it happen.” Dan and de Deller were the ideal baby delivery match. “We couldn’t have done any of that without [de Deller],” Dan said. “He’s a hero.” Now that the family is settling in with their new baby girl, and the frenzy of events is over, Dan has a chance to reflect on last week’s drama. “It’s pretty much etched into my brain now,” he said. “I remember most of it, but there are parts — after listening to the 9-1-1 tapes — that I didn’t remember saying. But for the most part it’s pretty clear.”

HERALD OPINION Premier bitten by pest problems Premier Christy Clark has a new political problem buzzing around her office. A year ago, the newly appointed premier was looking to change the channel for an unpopular government grappling with the fallout of the harmonized sales tax. Newly appointed NDP leader Adrian Dix was touting an idea that is all the rage with urban folks, a ban on “cosmetic pesticides.” All the better B.C. communities already have one, starting with Clark’s old stomping ground of Port Moody in 2003. So she figured she’d better run to the front of this parade, swipe a popular policy from the opposition and do something to redefine the B.C. Liberal Party after the taxcutting, regulation-repealing decade of Gordon Campbell. But first an all-party committee would hold hearings around the province, chaired by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Bennett presented the committee’s report last week, and one could see what was coming. Bennett is the rifle-toting outdoorsman who recently called on his government to abandon the carbon tax, saying it’s silly to keep pretending B.C. can change the world’s climate. He was recently appointed by Clark to cochair the B.C. Liberal Party policy committee for next year’s election, a strong signal of the party’s rightward shift in response to the B.C. Conservative threat. Bennett concluded after 10 months of hearings that the public aversion to common lawn and garden herbicides is based on “chemophobia” that flourishes due to scientific illiteracy. That statement is both politically dangerous and absolutely correct. I first covered this issue in the Okanagan 25 years ago, when environmentalists fought the use of Roundup by the forests ministry to knock down brush and promote new trees. The evidence boils down

Community gardening efforts commendable

JADE SWARTZBERG Merritt HERALD A few weeks after arriving in Merritt back in 2010, I participated in a local “Harvest Feast.” With other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I used my hands to pick corn and dig up potatoes, carrots, onions and other

vegetables. Immediately after that, we proceeded to the kitchen where we washed the vegetables, cooked them and enjoyed them. It couldn’t have been much longer than an hour from the time they were in the ground to the time they were in my stomach. This was a novel experience for me, but it was so much fun, and I imagine the food tastes even better when you plant the crops yourself and tend to them before harvesting and cooking them. Though the April showers seem to be confused and have arrived

with the May flowers, many people are turning their thoughts to gardening. And listening to the talk, it makes me wish I had a little garden of my own. (For now I’ll have to be content with my two little potted plants that sit on my window sill.) As someone who has very little experience gardening and very limited knowledge, I’ve been impressed by the community support that is available. For one thing, this Saturday the Baillie House is hosting a Spring Garden Festival in conjunction with Communities in

Bloom and the Lilac Conspiracy. From what I understand, there will be all sorts of new ideas for the green thumbs as well as the beginners. The event will even include a square-foot gardening demonstration to show people that with a little creativity, it is still possible to enjoy homegrown fruits and vegetables, even if there is very little space to work with. Besides the garden festival, there are several community garden initiatives. Plans for a Merritt community garden are still in the works, and members of the Lower Nicola

Indian Band have already been preparing their new community garden for planting at the end of May. There is something really attractive about getting back to the basics — growing your own food and preserving it. It’s satisfying to enjoy the fruits of your labours and it feels good knowing from where your food comes. I applaud the efforts of those involved in the local programs. For those not interested in doing the work, you can still enjoy local food by shopping at the Nicola Valley Farmers’ Market.

YOUR OPINION B.C.’s scientific nonsense trend

Speak up You can comment on any story you read @ merrittherald.com

?

From Page 4 to this: these complex organic compounds break down in a short period to simpler, common components that pose no threat. Thus, with buffer zones around watercourses and temporary entry restrictions, they are safe. Unfortunately, most people know little or nothing about chemistry and refuse to believe this. It’s part of the scientific nonsense trend that has grown in B.C. society for decades. We have parents turning their backs on routine immunization because of superstitions about vaccines. We have people panicked about imaginary health effects of smart meters, egged on by shoddy, sensationalist media reporting. The parallels between local government responses to smart meter hysteria and this scientifically ignorant push against “pesticides” is telling. As Bennett put it, when someone becomes convinced her child is at risk, “that mum is pretty darn compelling when she goes to council.” Few have the courage to stand up to that. The committee sought advice from Health Canada, whose scientists approve conditions of use for chemicals. Health Canada representative Lindsay Hansen said B.C. was the first province to ask for its advice, despite the fact that most provinces have imposed bans. These bans are political, not public safety measures, University of Guelph toxicologist Keith Solomon told MLAs. The committee also learned that “cosmetic” use accounts for only five per cent of pesticide use. Most of it is in agriculture, forestry and commercial pest control, with no ban proposed. MLAs in farming areas signalled their concern over the effect of this urban gesture politics. Backyard fruit trees go unsprayed and pests spread to orchards and fields. We have large areas of agricultural land reserve, but 85 per cent of the people who live in those areas don’t farm. The NDP is content to fan public fear and ignore evidence, as with smart meters and oil pipelines. The premier has a choice here. She can do the popular thing, or the right thing. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press.

The ongoing debate about debate

DAN ALBAS View from the HILL This past week was a very raucous one on Parliament Hill with much of the discussion centered around the subject of debate. At times over the past few weeks there has been more debate about the process of debating than there has been legitimate debate and discussion over proposed bills and related legislation. For example, during the initial debate on the budget, an individual NDP MP used three entire days of the debate time. In doing so, literally dozens of other MP’s from all across Canada didn’t have

the opportunity to speak either for or against various aspects of the budget. It was more alarming when the NDP MP in question began to read anonymous twitter feed into the record to take up time. While it may be an allowable tactic to monopolize debate time, in doing so MP’s from other parts of the country are denied an opportunity to also speak out on the budget. It is difficult to understand how this political tactic enhances a healthy debate. Moving on to the actual debate on the Budget Implementation Act, the Opposition Liberal party initially suggested that there were potentially two different versions of the same bill and used this self-created confusion to further delay the debate. Ultimately the Clerk’s office confirmed there was only one copy of the bill and the speaker ruled that debate must continue. Unfortunately debate

that is delayed in this case means debate that could have occurred did not. Members of the opposition have also accused our government of denying debate at committee meetings by using the practice of going in-camera. Using information provided by the non-partisan Library of Parliament, the Canadian Press actually revealed that the government to most often use this tactic was the Liberals under Paul Martin with runner-up honours going to the Liberal Government under Jean Chrétien. As you may have also heard recently, the actual debate time at second reading allocated to the Budget Implementation Act is the longest in the past twenty years. That being said, that does not necessarily mean the debate time is being used for the purposes intended. More commonly debate time seems consumed about the debating process

and how some members of the opposition would prefer a different format. If I come across as sounding frustrated with these current tactics, it is fair to say I am mindful that some of our most recent debates are not serving the interest of Canadians. If the opposition believes that our Economic Action Plan is not the right direction for the country, then let them propose rather than simply oppose. Ultimately the ongoing disruption tactics should not be used instead of bringing ideas forward and defending them. Canadians deserve nothing less. This is obviously a somewhat partisan point of view admittedly from an MP who is still very new to Parliament Hill. I certainly welcome your views on this or any other subject. Dan Albas is the Member of Parliament for OkanaganCoquihalla and can be reached at dan.albas@parl.gc.ca.

Downtown stores prepare for cash mob By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

A flash mob is defined as a group of people who assemble in public and perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act. On the other hand, a cash mob (a group of people who assemble to spend money at a store) is organized with a very specific purpose – to stimulate the local economy. A group of Merritt shoppers hope to do just that when they assemble on June 8 and “mob” Davis Leathers and More by purchasing as many items from the business as possible. Anthony Abraria said he and his wife Christine were partially inspired to organize the Merritt Cash Mobs by news of a cash mob in Salmon Arm at a stationary store. “The Salmon Arm cash mob was more reactive after the [City of Salmon Arm awarded a contract] to a web development firm from the United States and local web development agencies were upset about it,” said Abraria. “We thought a cash mob

was a cool idea for the community to get involved and support local business.” The Abraria’s say they hope the cash mobs will have a positive affect on locallyowned businesses in Merritt, especially after controversy over new franchises moving in and increased crime in the downtown core. “We are not criticizing franchises, as they create a lot of jobs in our community; rather, it is our intention to remind local consumers about some of the great things they can find in our locallyowned stores and businesses,” reads a promotional flyer. The public reaction has been positive so far, said Abraria, explaining that the Davis Leathers cash mob will be the first of many. “At first we were going to randomly draw the first business, but when we read in the newspaper about the problems [Davis Leathers] has had with vandalism, we thought it would be cool for the community to lend a hand to these business owners,” he said. “After that, we have a poll on our Facebook

page so people can have a voice and decide where they want to go next.” Facebook and word of mouth are the primary marketing methods for the Merritt Cash Mobs since organizers want to keep the effort “as grass roots as possible.” Typically, cash mobbers arrive at a store expecting to spend $20, but Abraria said he and his wife are hoping people will support the community in any way they can. “Given the frequency of the mobs and the local economy, we don’t want to put too much pressure on people who would like to participate,” he said. “We’re suggesting a $5 minimum so that it [makes an impact].” Abraria said he encourages those who choose not to participate to take time to shop downtown through the eyes of a tourist. The Abrarias say their secondary purpose is to show people that their efforts can make a difference. “Often people have really good intentions, but they don’t necessarily act on it,” said Abraria.

TNRD funds $35,000 for Smith Pioneer Park By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

Plans for a new Smith Pioneer Park in Lower Nicola could look even snazzier after a ThompsonNicola Regional District funding announcement of $35,000. The Federal Gas Tax Community Works Fund money is earmarked for the addition of an underground sprinkler system. The provin-

cial government in March already dedicated $214,000 from the $30-million Community Recreation Program. “This upgrade to the sprinkler system is largely thanks to Electoral Area ‘N’ Director Herb Graham,” said TNRD Chair Randy Murray. “His commitment of the Federal Gas Tax Fund money was instrumental in ensuring that a revitalized and verdant Smith Pioneer Park in Lower

Nicola will serve all the people in our area for years to come.” The Lower Nicola Community Association contributed $40,000 of leveraged funding to help come up with the provincial amount. Plans include a new soccer field, a playground, a 430metre perimeter walking track, a retaining wall, new lighting and refurbished tennis courts. Smith Pioneer Park is over 1.5 hectares

and was constructed into a park in 1986. The park has since deteriorated and use has dropped. In the estimated 46,000-kilometre TNRD zone, only four communities received funding and Lower Nicola was the lone rural area. The TNRD estimated nearly 10,000 people from Lower Nicola, Canford, Sunshine Valley and Merritt will use the new Smith Pioneer Park.

Smith Pioneer Park will likely have a few more children playing after the recent announcement of funding from the province and Thompson-Nicola Regional District. Phillip Woolgar/Herald

Merritt prepares for Communities in Bloom judges By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

Merritt will have a chance to showcase its best qualities mid-July when two Communities in Bloom (CIB) judges arrive to evaluate the city’s efforts. With this in mind, local CIB committee members are asking local citizens to keep the community’s efforts in mind. “We encourage all residents to actively support Communities in Bloom by keeping their yards and surrounding spaces clean and wellmaintained,” said Shelley Sanders, a CIB committee member. CIB is a program aimed at inspiring communities to enhance and sustain the visual appeal of neighbourhoods and public spaces, with attention to environmental stewardship and preserving heritage cultural assets Communities participating in the program are judged in several categories including community involvement, tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry,

landscaped areas and floral displays. Each community participating in the CIB program will receive an evaluation report that provides feedback, and a bloom rating that is promoted as a symbol of excellence, within the province and across Canada. Last year, Merritt residents’ efforts paid

off when the local committee took home two awards at the CIB annual convention without even officially participating in the community judging program. Committee members Lorraine MacDonald and Lois Ward accepted the awards, which included a Heritage Conservation award

and Four Blooms recognition.

Judges also made special mention of Merritt’s Sunshine Valley Good Earth Composting Company. The Merritt group originally asked judges to visit to review how the community could prepare for full participation this year. CIB values co-operation between individuals, businesses, service clubs and local government to make visible community improvements. According to a press release from B.C. CIB, the program helps communities achieve goals such as increasing tourism and economic development. CIB will be on hand at the Spring Garden Festival this Saturday at the Baillie House, with new ideas to incorporate into gardening and some tips for beginners. The festival will begin at 10 a.m.

Beverley competes in Oregon Trail car rally By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

Merritt’s Nicki Beverley, and her codriver Jeff Tooth from Calgary, finished 18th on day 1 and 22nd on day 2 (out of 40 cars) in the Oregon Trail Rally on the May 5-6 weekend. Driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES, the pair completed 11 stages of the regional rally on Saturday and another 16 stages on Sunday to finish second in their class both days. “The roads were incredibly rough on Saturday and many cars broke down or limped back to service,” stated Beverley who is a nurse when she isn’t rally car racing. “Jeff drove amazingly.” Beverley conceded that their first racing experience south of

the border had a steep learning curve. “It was the first time that we’ve used Jemba notes, which are quite common in the States. They are designed by a computer that tracks the road during the pre-run and creates standardized notes which are then purchased by the competitors.” The BeverleyTooth car sustained only minimal damage despite the rough going on the Oregon Rally. They dented three rims, incurred one flat tire, and ripped off the front

control arm underbody protection while negotiating a significant ‘water splash’. On the May 11-13 weekend, Beverley was in Vernon working as the route master for a Targa Canada West event being run by the Kelowna Porsche Club. Beverley and Tooth return to behind-thewheel action themselves on the May 24-26 weekend in Kananaskis, Alberta at the Rocky Mountain Rally. The event represents round 2 in the Canadian Association of Rallysport Series and in the West Coast Rally Car Series. Locals can see Beverley and Tooth in real time on the June 15-16 weekend when the Mountain Trials Rally once again returns to Merritt and the Nicola Valley. MAKING A SPLASH! SPURS & STROKES The Merritt Secondary School rodeo team is right in the middle of their busy spring schedule of competitions. Last weekend, the 11-member squad was in action at the local rodeo grounds in Collettville. They achieved a total of 27 top-10 finishes. (Top left) Grade 9 student Brooke Gabara was one of 64 girls competing in the ladies barrel racing event on Saturday and Sunday. Merritt’s Fallon Fosbery won both days. Kynoch picked up a second and a third in the event on the weekend. Photo by Darlene Gellrich The Merritt Otters Swim Club has started up another season of competitive swimming. Over 40 youngsters have already signed up. (Right) Otters’ coach Gia Bogetti instructs a group of youngsters on the finer points of the backstroke at the Nicola Valley Aquatic Centre. This workshop will be held at the Florentine at 2 p.m. and is open to the public. The workshop is called Personal Planning. The workshop will be addressing documents that people should have in place if they are not able to attend their own affairs or make their own decisions about health care and financial matters. This workshop concentrates on before-death decisionmaking. The workshop also deals with Advance Care Planning which is an initiative of the provincial Health Authorities and encourages people to have conversations with their family and friends to express their personal values and wishes so that people will make appropriate decisions should an individual be unable to speak for themselves. Information is given about what happens legally when advance care planning hasn’t taken place and health care providers must decide about who to consult. Handouts will be provided at the workshop.
