Wife guilty of murdering husband Judge finds Leah Florence was not too drunk to realize her actions; Andrew Milne died after being stabbed 14 times by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter A Maple Ridge woman who killed her husband during a drunken domestic dispute two years ago has been found guilty of second degree murder. Madam Justice Jeanne Watchuk ruled Tuesday that although Leah Marie Florence was drinking that night, she was not too intoxicated
to form the intent to murder her husband, Andrew Lynn Milne. “I find that Ms. Florence was not intoxicated and angry to such a degree that prevented her from intending to cause Mr. Milne bodily harm or seeing that the multiple stab wounds and cuts would cause his death,” said Watchuk. Florence, who is aboriginal, has been in custody since November 2009, when she was arrested at her home on Ospring Street in Ham-
mond for stabbing her husband 14 times during a fight. The 911 call to police came from her aunt Patricia Burt, who owned the house and lived a floor above the couple. Burt had taken the couple in two months earlier because they were homeless. Burt’s ground rules for providing a roof over their heads included no drinking, fighting or smoking inside her house. Police found 50-year-old Milne lying on the floor in a pool of his blood. He died later in hospital. Florence suffered a gash to her arm during the altercation
and needed stitches, but Justice Watchuk pointed out Florence told police and a doctor the wound was not bothering her. In a statement to police, Florence said she and Milne had three two-litre bottles of cider to drink on the night in question. Florence did not take the stand in her defence during the trial in New Westminster Supreme Court, so Watchuk was left to determine her level of intoxication by hearing testimony from police, paramedics and firefighters who dealt with her. Canadian Pacific rail and its Teamsters are working out their differences without holding big-city commuters hostage in the process. So it will be business as usual Wednesday at West Coast Express commuter rail stations in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The federal government met with both sides Tuesday to ensure that commuter trains will keep running, even if the Teamsters walk off the job Wednesday, following an earlier strike vote. Canadian Pacific crews operate West Coast Express in Metro Vancouver for TransLink, as well as commuter rail services in Toronto and Montreal. “We’re hoping that the announcement will include something along the lines, ‘that impacts will not be on the commuter rail service,’” TransLink’s Fred Cummings said Tuesday. “We do remain hopeful. Let’s wait until the announcement comes out and let’s see what happens.” That announcement came later in the day, said Jennifer Siddon of Coast Mountain Bus Co. See Strike, p3

Glenwood elementary, ‘a hidden gem’ To celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary, students at Glenwood elementary have documented each decade of the school’s existence in colourful displays adorning the school’s hallways. The school is also holding a 50th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, May 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the event. Joanna Soolaman attended Glenwood from 1990 to 1997 and is helping to organize the festivities next week.
Amalgamation revitalizes 50-year-old school by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter
T
here’s very little about Glenwood elementary that resembles the school that opened on the site 50 years ago. In September 1961, the school had just three classrooms, with split classes covering Grades 1 to 6 and fewer than a hundred students. Glenwood soon outgrew those three humble rooms. More were added, as was a gym, then a library. In all, the school has seen close a half dozen major renovations in the past half century, resulting in a school with more than triple its original capacity. However, what has remained the same, says principal Jovo Bikic, is the sense of community within the school. “It’s really like a big family here,” he says. “You talk to anyone who has gone here, and they’ll tell you that.” Ann Morcom was one of the original students at Glenwood, and has nothing but fond memories of her time there. A Grade 6 student in 1961, Morcom’s teacher that year was principal Larry Davies. One day, Davies and the teachers at the school challenged the students to a baseball game. To make things interesting and give the kids a fighting chance, Davies dressed up as Snow White, while the teachers dressed as the seven dwarfs.

Former Glenwood students Ann Morcom and Joanna Soolaman, along with and principal Jovo Bikic look at a 1960s-thembed mural created by current students to mark the school’s 50th anniversary. See video @ mapleridgenews.com. “He had a lot of spirit and really helped to make it a great school,” says Morcom. “Glenwood was lucky to have him.” Glenwood was originally built to deal with overcrowding at nearby Mt. Crescent and Fairview elementary schools. Two years ago, Glenwood took in 100 students from Mt. Crescent after declining enrollment and budget constraints forced the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District to close that school. “It’s really rejuvenated and energized the school,” Bikic says of the
amalgamation. After years of declining enrollment and empty classes, Glenwood was given a second life. “Kindergarten enrollment is the highest it has been in 10 years,” he says. The school now houses a StrongStart early education centre, a preschool, and a daycare. With children as young as newborns taking part in the school’s StrongStart program, the school offers a 0 to age 13 experience, says Bikic. “It’s a hidden gem.”
Hidden may be an understatement. The school is tucked behind subdivisions and townhomes near Dewdney Trunk Road and 216th Street without any frontage. If you didn’t know it was there, you might never find it. “People don’t even realize we’re here,” says Bikic. However, in 1961, the school was surrounded by empty lots and orchards, according Morcom. “It’s totally different now,” she says. “But it’s still a great little school.”
“I was more than happy to volunteer my time,” she says. “[Glenwood] has been a part of so many peoples lives in the community. It’s where I met some of my best friends, learned to play the guitar, and the amazing teachers and programs there greatly influenced my life and who I am today.”
Drive one Glenwood is also hosting a Ford Drive One Event, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The school gets $20 for every test drive, with funds going towards field trips and learning resources.
Garibaldi mourning loss of beloved ‘Mr. H’ Pensions at issue by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Garibaldi secondary is mourning the loss of beloved teacher Gord Hausknecht as the longtime social studies instructor passed away Wednesday from heart failure. He was 58. Having taught at Garibaldi for 30 years, Hausknecht was an integral part of the school. “He had a real connection with his students, and a real passion for teaching,” said principal Grant Frend. “Everyone here is just so thankful for having known him, and the impact he had on their lives.” Hausknecht was responsible for a number of annual events and traditions at the school,
including the annual Grade 8 hike, leadership retreats, student government, and the 40 Hour Famine fundraiser. Frend said the events will continue, and this year’s grad dance will be dedicated to him. For Garibaldi teacher Steve Moore, Hausknecht was more than just a colleague, he was one of the reasons Moore decided to become a teacher in the first place. “I first had him as my teacher when I was in the eighth grade at Garibaldi,” said Moore. That was back in the 1980s, when Hausknecht was still starting out on his teaching career. “He always impressed students with his humour and mischievousness,” said Moore. “He had so much joy for what
Hausknecht never he did. As teachers, we complained about his all hope we have that health. gift.” “That’s the kind Hausknecht had no of guy he was,” said children of his own, Moore. “He never and was deeply devotcomplained about anyed to the kids at Garibthing, never shared aldi, often keeping in his problems. Strike from front There will be no disruption of commuter rail service after both sides agreed to maintain the service. “We’re very relieved and we look forward to business as usual tomorrow,” Siddon said. TransLink had planned to offer a shuttle service from Port Haney and Maple Meadows stations to Coquitlam Centre. TrainBus coaches and other extra buses would have picked up people at both stations in the morning, taken them to Coquitlam Centre, then to buses to Braid SkyTrain station. According to the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, the major labour issues are work rules, fatigue management, and pensions, which the union says the employer wants to cut by 40 per cent. If the walkout takes place, involving about 4,800 engineers, conductors and rail traffic controllers, freight service across Canada could be disrupted.

Gov’t backs away from pesticide ban Not enough evidence: Bennett by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
to use pesticides or herbicides has to apply for a permit. Many B.C. municipalities have now banned cosmetic pesticides, she said, adding the initiative is coming form the grass roots up. “These corporations have so much influence they’re just about dictating everything.” Barbara Kaminsky, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. and Yukon, opposed the decision against a ban. “We waited years for the B.C. government to follow the lead of other provinces and B.C. municipalities, and this is the result? The report was slow in coming and is weak in content. It is disappointing overall,” she said in a release. The groups – which include the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, the Lung Association, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Public Health Association of B.C. – had requested strong legislation banning the sale and use of all pesticides for lawns, gardens and non-agricultural landscaping.
The joint release from the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment said during the two public consultations the B.C. government has conducted (in 2010 and 2011), most of the 8,000 people who responded wanted a ban. But Kamloops MLA Bill Bennett said in a release there wasn’t enough evidence to warrant a ban and that Health Canada didn’t recommend it. “The majority of the committee concluded that we could not justify second guessing the 350 scientists who work at Health Canada,” he added. “There simply is not enough evidence that justifies an outright ban on cosmetic pesticide use. We are not prepared to tell homeowners that they cannot purchase federally-approved domestic-class pesticides or hire a qualified contractor to apply these federally-approved weed and bug control products to their lawn.” Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia have all banned cosmetic pesticides.

MLA Michael Sather can’t figure it out. When a committee formed last year to look at banning cosmetic pesticides on lawns and gardens, he thought Premier Christy Clark favoured the idea. But Thursday, the Liberal-dominated committee nixed the idea, instead deciding that lawn pesticides should be treated like tobacco, kept out of sight, and available at retail counters only by request. “I’m mystified by the whole process – unless it was part of Liberals trying to be more Conservative,” said Sather, who sat on the legislative committee that studied the issue. Perhaps the decision has to do with internal division – “just not doing what the premier directed them to do.” Maple Ridge resident Maria Raynolds, who led the Campaign for Pesticide Reduction, leading
to a Maple Ridge ban in 2007, doesn’t understand, either. “It’s just incomprehensible to me after all those submissions … that all they could come up with is that the government is doing enough … When the evidence all points to the opposite.” Raynolds said it doesn’t take much common sense to know there’s a connection between the poisons put into the environment and people’s health. But even if a link has not been proven, there’s no need to use cosmetic pesticides. “Everything grows beautifully without them.” The decision was “devastating” for her, but added there are “rays of hope.” Pitt Meadows, on March 1, banned lawn and garden pesticides, while Abbotsford is considering the same. Maple Ridge’s ban has been place for five years and seems to be working well, Raynolds said. The ban doesn’t prohibit selling pesticides, but many garden shops and home supply stores no longer carry them, she added. Under Maple Ridge’s bylaw, anyone who wants

Quiet around MP Maple Ridge council seems to abandon its electorate in the presence of senior politicians. Conservative MP Randy Kamp (Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission) was at council recently, to address Fisheries Act, medical marijuana and cellphone towers. Good that council invited him, but it should be more than just Coun. Cheryl Ashlie who speaks when the MP reports on what he’s done. Recently, only Ashlie asked Kamp questions about a federal housing policy, and asked for some follow-up information. Only Ashlie ask questions about changes to the Fisheries Act and said habitat protection should remain in it. She did so respecfully and politely. Coun. Judy Dueck was brave enough to disagree with Kamp when he told council it should create its own bylaw for cell tower locations. But the others, mostly as timid and quiet as church mice, said little. If they support the MP, they should say so. If they don’t, they should also speak up. Other points could have been raised: what about the MP doing some pro-active work with CP Rail and laying the groundwork for more track time for West Coast Express? Kamp got a free pass on that, as he did on the impact of federal tough-on-crime laws will have Fraser Regional Correctional Centre. Will there be any federal assistance to help with that? Questions don’t have to be confrontational or political, but council needs to show that it represents local interests when dealing with senior government, not sit on its collective hands. – The News Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Premier bitten by pest problem VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark has a new political problem buzzing around her office. A year ago, the newly appointed premier was looking to change the channel for an unpopular government grappling with the fallout B.C. Views of the harmonized Tom Fletcher sales tax. Newly appointed NDP leader Adrian Dix was touting an idea that is all the rage with urban folks, a ban on “cosmetic pesticides.” All the better B.C. communities already have one, starting with Clark’s old stomping ground of Port Moody in 2003. So she figured she’d better run to the front of this parade, swipe a popular policy from the opposition and do something to redefine the B.C. Liberal Party after the tax-cutting, regulationrepealing decade of Gordon Campbell. But first an all-party committee would hold hearings around the province, chaired by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Bennett presented the committee’s report last week, and one could see what was coming. Bennett is the rifle-toting outdoorsman who recently called on his government to abandon the carbon tax, saying it’s silly to keep pretending B.C. can change the world’s climate. He was recently appointed by Clark to co-chair the B.C. Liberal Party policy committee for next year’s election, a strong signal
of the party’s rightward shift in response to the B.C. Conservative threat. Bennett concluded after 10 months of hearings that the public aversion to common lawn and garden herbicides is based on “chemophobia” that flourishes due to scientific illiteracy. That statement is both politically dangerous and absolutely correct. I first covered this issue in the Okanagan 25 years ago, when environmentalists fought the use of Roundup by the forests ministry to knock down brush and promote new trees. The evidence boils down to this: these complex organic compounds break down in a short period to simpler, common components that pose no threat. Thus, with buffer zones around watercourses and temporary entry restrictions, they are safe. Unfortunately, most people know little or nothing about chemistry and refuse to believe this. It’s part of the scientific nonsense trend that has grown in B.C. society for decades. We have parents turning their backs on routine immunization because of superstitions about vaccines. We have people panicked about imaginary health effects of smart meters, egged on by shoddy, sensationalist media reporting. The parallels between local government responses to smart meter hysteria and this scientifically ignorant push against “pesticides” is telling. As Bennett put it, when someone becomes convinced her child is at risk, “that mum is pretty darn compelling when she goes to council.” Few have the courage to stand up to that. The committee sought advice from Health Canada, whose scientists approve conditions of use for chemicals.
Health Canada representative Lindsay Hansen said B.C. was the first province to ask for its advice, despite the fact that most provinces have imposed bans. These bans are political, not public safety measures, University of Guelph toxicologist Keith Solomon told MLAs. The committee also learned that “cosmetic” use accounts for only five per cent of pesticide use. Most of it is in agriculture, forestry and commercial pest control, with no ban proposed.
“MLAs in farming areas signalled their concern over the effect of this urban gesture politics.” MLAs in farming areas signalled their concern over the effect of this urban gesture politics. Backyard fruit trees go unsprayed and pests spread to orchards and fields. We have large areas of agricultural land reserve, but 85 per cent of the people who live in those areas don’t farm. The NDP is content to fan public fear and ignore evidence, as with smart meters and oil pipelines. The premier has a choice here. She can do the popular thing, or the right thing. EDITOR, THE NEWS:
The picture in this ad of a woman pulling down her panties is completely inappropriate for a family community paper. You seriously crossed the line of decency when you approved the publication of this image. No, I am not a prude, but there is a time and a place for such concepts and I am sure the patronage of The New Caddy Shack is aware of the services provided and it does not need to be so blatantly shown to the youth of the community who might be reading your paper to be informed of community events or working on school projects. Yet another example of the downward spiral of our society. Very disappointed. LEAH PILLET MAPLE RIDGE

Putting Locks on anything that these kids play at would be a good idea. They do it at Maple Ridge Secondary School on the tennis court. It’s an inexpensive way to keep these kids safe. I’m a mother of a two-year-old in Maple Ridge and the needles are popping up more and more, to the point where I do not want to take my kid or anyone’s kid to the parks for that reason. It’s unsafe. So please, please do something. It would give a lot of parents peace of mind.

like’ unions were recognized and granted the same legal status as those stodgy couples who bothered to marry in a church or before a justice of the peace. Now we have progressed even further in our understanding of what a marriage can be. As the editor points out, the union of two men or two women is legal in Canada, as well as in many other enlightened, progressive countries. What would have been considered inconceivable, not so long ago, is now recognized as a legitimate “marriage.” I can’t wait to see how the definition will continue to progress. The combinations and possibilities are quite breathtaking. If two humans can match up, why not three
Re; Simple position (News Views, May 11). Well, marriage certainly has “progressed” from the bad old centuries when it meant the lifelong union of a man and a woman, for better or worse, richer or poorer, with all those misguided humans thinking that was the only way to live with your ‘significant other.’ Thankfully that definition changed when divorce became legal and you could easily exit marriage to go on to greener pastures and (hopefully) happier marriages. Then we decided that the concept of a formal agreement between a man and woman to live together was not necessary and ‘marriage-

And don’t forget the ultimate union, the one that I think will finally complete the progression; yes, don’t laugh, marriage to self. Tracking devices help recover four laptop computers that had been stolen from local schools. The tracking devices were installed by the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District’s computer systems analysts, allowing them to monitor any computer stolen from a school in the district. This system is similar to a bait car, whereby it can be monitored once it has been stolen with real time capture of information. When a computer is stolen, the School District liaises with Ridge Meadows RCMP and provides detailed information that is reported by the computer. This allows police to obtain grounds to obtain a search warrant of where the computer is located. The Ridge Meadows RCMP Street Enforcement Unit, with help from the school district, recently recovered and returned four laptop computers after executing search warrants. “Ridge Meadows RCMP fully

MLA wants washrooms unlocked by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter Go to bathroom before visiting the income assistance office on Lougheed Highway in downtown Maple Ridge because the public washrooms in that building are locked. That bothers MLA Michael Sather. “It’s totally ridiculous. I can’t believe it,” Sather said last week. “It’s a human rights kind of issue.” Sather, MLA for Maple RidgePitt Meadows, said he’s received a few complaints, though not as many as he’d expect, after the department closed the bathroom to the public about a year ago. That can mean people waiting in line lose their place if they have to leave the building and find a bathroom elsewhere. He said he can only conclude that lack of resources means staff
just can’t supervise well enough to prevent the facility from being used for drug use. Instead, known trouble-makers could be barred from the washroom. “But to make everybody else suffers doesn’t seem right.” For him, it’s a sign of an under-funded department that can’t afford the staff to adequately supervise the office where people Sather apply for income assistance. One complaint came from a mom with two young children, Sather said. He raised the issue in the legislature last week, asking Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux why the office closed the bathroom. “The B.C. Building Code requires that public service buildings provide washrooms, yet the
washrooms at the Maple Ridge office have been closed to the clients for a year,” he said in the legislature. It’s only under “exceptional circumstances” when bathrooms aren’t available, said the ministry. In the Maple Ridge office, the bathroom is locked, but the key is available by asking the security guard or staff. “This practice was put into place due to safety concerns, as well as due to frequent vandalismrelated repairs and cleaning that was required to maintain the washroom,” said the ministry. Security guards or staff can also keep the person’s place in line. The department also said one complaint was made while the washroom was closed for renovations. Clients also are sometimes to directed to other washrooms.

Sherry Stewart. It’s the fourth such project the Alouette River Management Society has done on the Stewart’s property. The family owns the river bed and restricts access so it can serve as a conservation area. The project actually involves digging out a side channel adjacent to the South Alouette. “If you have one big main stream of water, there’s really nowhere for the fish to go and rest,” said Stewart, former MLA and Maple Ridge councillor. There also are areas for the coho, chinook, chum, pink salmon and cutthroat trout to hide from predators. The three other locations already built are doing well, he added. “ARMS goes and gets the funding. We just provide the land for free to use.” Stewart points out that because it’s not open to the public, fish and wildlife habitat isn’t disturbed by dogs or people disrupting their space. The money, $10,545, comes from B.C. Hydro’s Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, although ARMS will oversee the project. Other partners involved are Katzie First Nations, the provincial government and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The South Alouette River runs through about 1.5 kilometres of the Stewarts’ property, known as Coniagas Ranch. More than 90 acres of the property have been left natural for wildlife habitat.

Odyssey of repatriation in northern B.C. B ringing our ancestors home: that is the title of a talk Donald Luxton will present Thursday, May 24to the members of the Maple Ridge Histor- Looking Back ical Society, Fred Braches their guests, and anyone else interested. The talk will be at 7:30 p.m. at the old St. Andrew’s Church building at 22279 – 116th Avenue. The sub-title of Luxton’s talk is “The Nisga’a Museum and an Odyssey of Repatriation in Northern British Columbia.” The subject may come as a surprise to all who see Luxton as a specialist on the subject of heritage, in general, and historic buildings, in particular. We in Maple Ridge owe a debt of gratitude to him for his work on producing the first inventory of Maple Ridge’s heritage resources on behalf of the Community Heritage Commission. His book The Heritage Resources of Maple Ridge, published by the CHC in 1996 in conjunction with the District of Maple Ridge, is the enduring outcome of his work in Maple Ridge. The book, accessible on the

But Luxton’s vision and expertise is not limited to this kind of heritage. Donald Luxton and Associates call themselves the foremost cultural and heritage firm in western Canada, and they took a leading role in the creation of a stunningly beautiful and unique museum for the Nisga’a Nation in the Nass Valley. It was Luxton who assembled a team of experts to bid for the Nisga’a Museum project, and who for three years worked with

the project team that saw the project through to its completion. The Nisga’a Museum is a unique institution that is a direct result of the Nisga’a Treaty signed in 2000. This was the first time that First Nations cultural property was repatriated as part of the treaty process in British Columbia and a landmark event in Nisga’a history. The repatriation occurred on September 15, 2010, and the museum opened on May 11, 2011. The Nisga’a Museum is a remarkable accomplishment – a stunning 10,000 square foot museum built in the remote Nass Valley to display 330 repatriated artifacts. It was also conceived as the cultural heart and soul of the Nisga’a Nation, and as a living embodiment of the Nisga’a culture. As Simon Calder, a Nisga’a youth representative, expressed it at the opening ceremony of the museum: “We need to embrace our culture. There is nothing better than this right here, seeing our people together, happy. There is no longer darkness above us, there is nothing but light now.” Luxton’s illustrated talk will highlight the museum’s vision, architecture, artifacts and displays.

ensure you have the right safety locks on windows and doors, especially if you have young children,” says B.C. Ambulance service superintendent Julien Ponsioen. While it might be tempting to leave a window open a crack to let in some fresh air, remember that young children are innately curious and natural climbers and may not understand the risk of their actions. They can be strong enough to widen an unlocked window enough to fall out of it. Safety tips to prevent falls from windows: • Window screens will not

Top tips to get active, from Pacific Blue Cross: • Take a walk: after lunch or get off one bus stop early on your way to work. Alternatively, park farther away from the entrance to the mall or take the stairs instead of the elevator. • Make a play for it: you might have flown a kite or thrown a Frisbee as a kid, why not now? • Start a family health club: gather your family together one evening or weekend and make up a list of activities that everyone enjoys. Put your list on the fridge and plan evenings when you will try a new activity.

• Support the sports: most sports activities increase your physical fitness, contribute to heart and bone health, and help you maintain a healthy body weight, so join a club or team. Give dancing, kick-boxing, yoga, running or tennis a go? • Just the basics: scientific evidence suggests that even low-intensity lifestyle activities have health benefits. This is important to those who may have limited abilities to exercise – such as arthritis sufferers. Casual activities that can contribute to greater health: • gardening and yard work; • housework;
prevent children from falling through. • Don’t underestimate a child’s mobility; children begin climbing before they can walk, so move household furniture away from windows. • Install window guards on windows above the ground level. Or, fasten the windows, so that they cannot open more than 10 centimetres (four inches). Don’t leave children unattended on balconies or decks. And talk to your children about the dangers of opening and playing near windows.
• dancing; • walking up stairs; • water exercise. • Have fun – find something active you enjoy and stick with it. If you’re genuinely going to develop an active life then you need to find a way of making exercise fun. That way, it won’t feel like hard-work! • Get virtually motivated: take advantage of some of the mobile applications and online portals that provide guidance and information on healthy living. My Good Health (https://caresnet. pac.bluecross.ca/CARESnet/) is a free resource for Pacific Blue Cross plan members that provides a personalized health report identifying individual health risks and assistance on making a positive change.

Healthy Living Spring time for tetanus booster Spring is the season when many Canadians get outside and get their hands dirty – gardening, outdoor renovations or just playing around. So this throughout the spring and summer, the Canadian Coalition for Immunization Awareness and Promotion reminds Canadians of the risk of contracting tetanus – an acute and often fatal disease caused
by an extremely strong toxin found in soil and dirt that affects the nerves. Most Canadians associate tetanus with rusty nails, but infection usually occurs when an individual is exposed to the toxin through a cut or puncture – a scratch from a rose bush or a cut from home maintenance or gardening tools used outdoors.
Symptoms associated with tetanus infection include stiffness of the jaw, known as lockjaw, and severe muscle spasms which usually appear approximately eight days after infection. CCIAP asks Canadians to check their immunization records to make sure they are up to date with their tetanus immunizations.

Poetry and two cups of tea Gordon Baird has published his first collection of poems, with a little help from writer Christine Logan by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter
G
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Gordon Baird has just published his first collection of poems called Special Tribute to Mothers Everywhere, with help from Christine Logan. The book is available at the Little Cricket Gift Gallery and Black Bond Books in Maple Ridge.
ordon Baird has a memory that’s like a sponge. Without much effort, Baird can recall all the games he played as a child, the places he visited and exactly when he moved to Maple Ridge. He remembers fondly each cup of tea he drank with his mother, Nellie Gale Baird. “It’s mainly attributable to my mother’s 90th birthday,” says Baird, contemplating the inspiration for his first book of poetry while sitting on a bench in the sunshine at the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living Office in downtown Maple Ridge. The 30-poem oeuvre, penned by Baird with help from Christine Logan, is full of short, catchy rhymes and verse that capture snippets of his life. Just as its title says, the book is a “Special Tribute to Mothers Everywhere.” It’s a salute to mothers and all the nice things they do for you, whether it’s baking cookies, kissing away nightmares or tying your shoes. It’s Baird’s legacy to his best friend and mom. “I loved her very much,” he says. Stirred by clouds and drinking tea, Baird chose to write about all the things he cares about – his friends and family. He threw in a little ditty about a rubber ducky, just to lighten the mood. Rubber Ducky is probably one of the favourite poems in the book, although choosing just one poem from 30 is a daunting task. See Poetry, p23
Celebrate spring with song Enjoy an afternoon of song in Maple Ridge on Sunday at a spring concert presented by The Maple Ridge Choral Society. The event will feature a wonderful collection of songs and harmony sung by a choir of 40 people. The Maple Ridge Choral Society has been a part of the community for over 50 years and sings an eclectic mix of music ranging from classical and folk to sacred, with popular tunes thrown in for good measure. The choir sings in four-part harmony: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Andrew Wilhelm-Boyle has been the choir’s music director and conductor since 2006. A conductor with 30 years experience, WilhelmBoyle has a rich background in both church and community choral activity: he served as music director at Christ Church Cathedral, Whitehorse; St. Paul’s Cathedral, Regina; and St. Agnes’ Anglican Church in North Vancouver; and of the Whitehorse Community
Choir; the Riverwood Singers, a Winnipeg women’s chamber choir; and the BC Tel Choir. Wilhelm-Boyle has also served as musical director for several musicals including Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music and The Pirates of Penzance. A highlight was his appointment to recruit and conduct the Sing for Canada Chorus of singers from around the Lower Mainland for Canada Day 1996 celebrations at Canada Place. Aimee Oliveria is the choir’s pianist.
Showtime The spring concert take places Sunday, May 27 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 12145 Laity Street in Maple Ridge at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10. For tickets, call Dennis at 604-465-8038 or Jerry at 604-463-0760.

If you love food and grow a garden or are thinking about starting one, you might want to check out Gardens of Destiny, a free documentary screening on Thursday in Maple Ridge. The event is being hosted by the Society for Organic Urban Land Care (SOUL). Gardens of Destiny follows Dan Jason of Salt Spring Seeds around his amazingly diverse farm. It explores the seemingly unsustainable agriculture system, which most of us rely on, while inspiring solutions such as organically grown food and saving your own seeds.
Genevieve Beaupre with SOULRidge Meadows says the idea behind screening this film is to raise awareness about where our food is coming from and all the fun things that can be done to prevent our natural diversity from being lost forever. Seed saving is a big part of this, so SOUL Ridge Meadows plans on teaching people how to properly save seeds in fall. The group is also involved with the operation of Gaia College, which runs several courses in Maple Ridge ncluding one for organic master gardeners. • Gardens of Destiny screens at Maple Ridge municipal hall,11995 Haney Place on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. To learn more about SOUL, email ridgemeadows@organiclandcare.org.

Poetry from p21 “Because it’s funny,” Baird says, noting he doesn’t want people to feel sad all the time. Baird asked Logan to write the book with him last year after attending a book signing for her first collection of poetry, titled To Touch Your Heart. Logan, who was working as one of Baird’s support workers at the time, didn’t hesitate when asked. When she sat down with Baird, the words flowed rather quickly. She only collaborated or prompted Baird when needed. “The first poem we did we succeeded within minutes,” says Logan. “I was surprised by how easy it was with our thoughts combining with one and another. I can really see Gord when I read these poems.” In four months, Baird had penned 30 poems and was eager to publish the book by Christmas to gift to his family. “They are really thrilled that he’s got this accomplishment under his belt,” says Logan. She just completed her third collection of poems in the span of a year. Logan began writing poetry again after reading three poems she wrote in high school, which she had held onto for years. Her short, beautiful poems are meant to inspire.

Coquitlam special teams too much for Burrards Maple Ridge falls 7-5 in home opener by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Coquitlam Adanacs scored four powerplay goals and two shorthanded markers as the Maple Ridge Burrards fell 7-5 in front of a packed house at Planet Ice in their home opener. The local senior A men’s lacrosse club was without top scorers Jarrett Davis, Curtis Dickson, Riley Loewen and Simon Giourmetakis, and managed just a single powerplay goal in their absence, despite 12 opportunities. However, head coach Daren Fridge he wasn’t disappointed in the loss given the strong defensive effort his team put forth. “The defence did their job,” he said. “We knew going into this game goals would be an issue. Having [Dickson, Davis, Loewen, and Giourmetakis] back would obviously alleviate the pressure on Aaron Pascas and Randy Daly. “I’m optimistic the scoring chances will open up when they get back. We won’t be the same team
the next time we see [the Adanacs].” Goalie Chris Seidel made 33 saves on 40 shots, while at the other end of the rink, Daly led Burrards scorers with a goal and three assists. “He was the oldest guy on the floor and he was putting out the best effort,” said Fridge of Daly. While the Burrards only allowed a single evenstrength goal, the squad’s play on special teams was cause for concern for Fridge. “When we’re giving up goals like we were on special teams, that shouldn’t be happening,” he said. Part of the reason, he believes, was due to the Burrards not playing any exhibition games this season, and not being able to have a full scrimmage until last Thursday. There was a packed house at Planet Ice Sunday night to see the Burrards in action for the first time this season, with the local senior A club offering free admission, as well as a pregame barbecue, for local minor lacrosse players and their families. The Burrards opened the scoring midway through the first period thanks to a shorthanded goal from

the stick Derek Lowe. The Adanacs responded with two goals in the following two and a half minutes to take their first lead of the game. Tyler Miotto tied things up for Maple Ridge with the Burrards only pow-
erplay goal of the game, before Coquitlam’s Jaxson Lee restored the Adanacs one-goal lead before the first intermission. Coquitlam stretched their lead to two early in the second period only to have the Burrards answer
back with two of their own to tie the game at 4-4. Daly scored in the 10th minute, while rookie Brandon Bertoia, playing in his firstever game in a Burrards uniform, scored shorthanded with four minutes left in the period.
However, Coquitlam again scored a goal late in the period to take a onegoal lead into the third. The Adanacs scored two powerplay goals early in the third to jump ahead of the Burrards by three. See Burrards, p25

Burrards face Burnaby this Sunday Burrards from p24 Rookie Blake Mattinson scored with just over six minutes to play to bring the Burrards within two, but that was as close as the home team would get, falling 7-5. Fridge said he was impressed with the play of his rookies, with both Mattinson and Bertoia getting on to the scoresheet. “David Joyce had a good game on defence, so did [Richard] Cambrey,” he said. The Burrards head to Vancouver Island to take on the Victoria Shamrocks on Friday before re-
turning home to host the Burnaby Lakers on Sunday at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. Fridge said he is hopeful he will have Tyler Codron, Daniel Amesbury, Dickson, and Giourmetakis back in the lineup for this weekend’s games.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Charles on May 18th, 2012. His life ended peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 90. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Cecile and the children he has always been so proud of; Lawrence Brochu (Madelaine), Elise Potyondi (Don Sutherland), Yvette Leroux (Pierre), Philip Brochu (Suzanne), Emily Malaka (Dan), Diane Severinski (Rick) and Lorraine Veldhuis (Ken). Family meant everything to him and he leaves behind 24 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Jeanne Lalonde of Edmonton and was predeceased by his brothers Joe and Maurice Brochu. Charles was born in Port Alfred, Chicoutimi, Quebec on December 17th, 1921. He met the love of his life Cecile in Spirit River, Alberta in 1942 and married her on December 27th, 1945. He started out in the trucking industry and was involved in building the Alaska Highway during WWII. He later worked in the lumber industry as a faller. In 1962 he moved to Hammond with his family and resided in the Ridge Meadows area since then. From 1963 to his retirement in 1986, he worked at the Hammond Cedar Mill. He enjoyed fishing, RVing and family reunions; loved dancing and had a passion for violin music. He will be remembered for his beautiful smile and joyous laughter. He was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Prayers are Thursday, May 24th at 5:30pm and the Funeral Service will be Friday, May 25th at 11:00am. Both will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, 22589 121 Ave. Maple Ridge, BC. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca

Renovating on a budget With a modest budget and a lot of determination, Laura Lee and Jacqueline turned their drafty little pre-war bungalow into a warm and cosy retreat. They learned how to insulate and make other energy efficiency upgrades. And, they’ve proven you don’t have to spend a lot to save a lot. “You can spend less than $50 on a tube of window caulk, a roll of weatherstripping and a window film kit and significantly change the comfort of your home, says Jacqueline. Meet Michele. She’s a FortisBC customer who believes in conservation and reducing greenhouse gases. She drives a fuel-efficient car, grows her own vegetables, and turns down the heat whenever she can. And now, she’s a FortisBC renewable natural gas customer.
“It’s an easy thing I can do to be a little bit more green. I’m helping to reduce greenhouse gases, and it’s terrific to get a reward for it too. Michele, Mission, renewable natural gas customer
Renewable natural gas is natural gas‌but better Instead of coming from the ground, methane gas comes from organic waste found at local landfills and farms. Before it escapes into the atmosphere as a harmful greenhouse gas, it’s captured and cleaned up. Then, FortisBC adds it into their pipelines, giving British Columbians renewable energy.
How it works
Carbon neutral
For about $5 a month, you can designate 10 per cent of your natural gas usage as renewable. FortisBC will then inject an equivalent amount of renewable natural gas into their system.
FortisBC’s renewable natural gas has been designated as carbon neutral in B.C. by Offsetters (Canada’s leading provider of carbon management solutions). Customers who sign up receive a 10 per cent credit on the B.C. carbon tax.

Many changes in rooďŹ ng “ from page.1 each individual roof. Andrew McDowell of 21st Century Roofers Ltd. is a second generation roofer; you might say it’s in his blood. The company, started by his dad in 1978 and taken over by McDowell four years ago, has grown from a small four-person business to twelve highly trained professionals. “There have been lots of changes over the years; for instance on a low-slope roof we used to build it up with felt, tar and a gravel finish. Today we can provide a modern high-performance alternative,â€? McDowell says. “We are very careful about using new products, some of which haven’t been around very long. Our company will only use proven materials and technology and which has a good warranty behind them. Some of the new materials have been around for ten years or less so we don’t know how they will perform over the expected life of the roof. Another thing to understand is some of the new materials don’t have CSA approval from the Canadian government.â€? He cites the example of a wood fibre product that definitely didn’t work. “In the 1990s there was a new roofing product
PRODUCTS â?ąâ?ą QUALIFIED TRADES â?ąâ?ą EXPERT ADVICE â?ąâ?ą
made of wood fibre in cement; it failed miserably. As we know cement is porous, as is wood fibre. This product may have been fine in Arizona but not in our climate and a lot of home owners suffered with roofs that caved in from the weight. Metal roofs are growing in popularity. There are different types: metal shingles, metal cladding and barn profile. 21st Century uses steel metal cladding because McDowell feels the hidden system makes it much more water-tight. For most of us he says, a new roof is not a rewarding purchase that you can look at like a new television or sofa; it’s utilitarian. But not much else matters if on a dark and stormy night you hear the sound of water dripping onto your dining room table. Do your due diligence, check references, check to see if there is a string of complaints filed against the company and make sure you get the proper warranties. It also pays to check that the company is a member of an association like the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association which requires members to carry a minimum of $5 million in liability insurance, and is current with WorkSafe BC. Also, check to see if the company you hire subcontracts out. If they do you just don’t know who you are getting.
Andrew McDowell of 21st Century Roofers urges homeowners to do their due diligence before choosing a contractor, since there’s nothing more heartstopping than hearing water dripping onto your table during a rain storm.

Tending to the neglected areas of the home By Maggie Calloway After what seems like a long fall and winter with its wood fires, mud and dust, the pull to shrug off the heavy burden of cold weather by throwing open doors and windows is irresistible. The problem is the winter takes a toll on your home, both inside and out. It may be old-fashioned to schedule a spring cleaning but it can be quite cathartic to scrub down windows, wash curtains and hang them back up fresh and clean, and generally give the whole house a deep clean. Like anything else worth doing, there is a method to doing a thorough job cleaning a house so it was time to turn to the experts, Molly Maid. The good folks at Molly Maid have refined cleaning to a fine art and that is certainly true of Vancouver’s Michele Yonge. “There are a couple of things we advise people do before they deep clean; one is getting into closets and packing away winter stuff and hanging spring and summer clothes ... not forgetting to wipe down shelves as you go,” Yonge says. “Next, cleaning windows and washing or drycleaning drapes and curtains makes a huge difference. We recommend people wash the outside (of the) windows first because if you wash the inside first you don’t get the same bang! Don’t forget to clean the curtain tracks and window frames as you go. Use the tools that help get the job done; a dry, clean paint brush for instance is terrific for getting dust out of corners. One of the handiest things to use is microfibre cloths, (which are) great to clean wooden blinds ... plus can be thrown in the washer. Feeling the sun
shining through clean windows gives you great incentive to keep going.” A big thing is to declutter the whole house. Look at everything on counters, dressers and any surface where things tend to land. Sometimes we are so used to something cluttering the house we cease to see it. If you are not using or wearing something, get rid of it. You deserve to live in a space where you can breathe, with sun pouring through windows and clean surfaces. “We recommend people do three or four deep cleanings a year depending on your home and family,” Yonge says. “Laundry rooms are another place to get organized this time of year. Instead of soiled laundry piled together, get (a basket) for whites (and) one for darks ... it makes it so much easier. Once the clothes are washed placing them in a designated colourcoded basket for each family member keeps the room organized. Master bedrooms are great to dig into this time of year because they are often the place where things are dropped (and are) probably the most neglected room in the house. A final hint would be to put together a cleaning caddy with all the tools you need at hand; it really helps motivation when you don’t have to go digging around under the sink.”
The folks at Molly Maid have some tips for doing a thorough spring cleaning, including drycleaning the drapes, de-cluttering every flat surface and tidying up the kitchen. Submitted photos

Scott Fleenor of TerraTek Energy Solutions specializes in renewable energy systems, such as solar power and wind turbines. Submitted photo
Finding an alternative energy source There are many different types of alternative energy, so it’s no longer a one-size-fits all approach to heating and cooling your home. By Maggie Calloway Alternative energy for the home comes in various forms. They include solar, both hot water and solar photovoltaics (full on solar collectors for the whole house), wind turbine, Geothermal and GeoExchange. Those last two terms are often used interchangeably but are actually different; Geothermal is the direct use of heat generated at great depths below the Earth’s surface and GeoExchange is a central heat pump-based heating and cooling system which pumps heat into or out of the ground or body of water. Scott Fleenor, a principal with TerraTek Energy Solutions Inc., specializes in renewable energy systems, with a primary focus on solar thermal, photovoltaic, smallscale wind and micro-hydro energy production. In-house capabilities include design, specification, system supply and installation. Throughout southwestern British Columbia, TerraTek has successfully designed, supplied and installed hundreds of systems for residential, multi-
S
residential and commercial. “All these technologies cost money but it depends on how you define cost. Essentially with all these systems you are buying your energy up front,” says Fleenor. “Over the life of the systems, they will pay for themselves. For instance, a single collector for domestic hot water we are talking approximately $6,700. Keeping in mind every situation is unique, for a system to service three to six people it would be around $8,800. For a photovoltaic, a solar electric system, it would be $4 to $7 a watt, fully installed. This would be a system tied to the grid with no batteries meaning you can pull from the grid when needed and sell back to the grid when you are producing more energy than you are using.” With the introduction of BC Hydro’s SmartMeters, alternative energy might be a good option. “The new SmartMeters have a secondary screen which shows the revenue stream to and from Hydro. Reasons to shop at Sears Maple Ridge
What do you use your garden shed for? Is it a spot to store the lawnmower and garden stuff? Have you converted it into a home office at the bottom of the garden for your dream spot for writing your first novel? Maybe it’s your new chicken house if you live in a spot where urban chickens are permitted. Whatever you use it for, garden sheds have always held a special spot in our hearts; we have always thought of new possibilities for the small space. If you are an avid watcher of British home and garden shows, as I am, we have probably had a good laugh at the same time when a realtor, showing a client a property complete with a broken-down shed with the roof caving in, points out the potential of converting the relic into a pool cabana. Did you know in the U.K. a person over-fixated on building sheds and hanging out in same (I leave the interpretation of that to you), is referred to as a “Sheddie?” And in New Zealand there is a bi-monthly magazine called, what else, The Shed, directed mostly at ‘blokes’ who do DIY projects in same. Obviously there is a world-wide culture surrounding sheds, and something about them that fires the imagination. I first thought about writing about sheds when I came across a team building a new chicken coop at SAINTS, an animal sanctuary where I volunteer. Father and son John and
Mike Hynes have teamed up and created Rainforest Sheds to build not just chicken coops but a variety of garden sheds, horse barns and dog houses, among other projects. John says there is a growing interest in sheds of all sorts. “If it’s feasible to build we can build it; almost every job is unique,” John says. I must say I am very impressed with the quality of their work. I even found, in my research, a Northern Territories government fact sheet called “When is a shed not a shed” which lists the difference between a house and a shed. Who would have thought there needed to be clarification? There is a whole new world out there! Sheds have even moved into the music world. To woodshed, or ‘shed,’ in jazz jargon, is “to shut oneself up, away from the world, and practice long and hard, as in ‘going to the woodshed’.”
Garden sheds aren’t just used for storing the lawnmower anymore. From horse shelters, above left, to mini-sheds, right, there’s something for every use. Submitted photos

Living off the grid a good option for some owners for the foreseeable future the payback makes sense. ... We are also finding houses with some alternative energy sources are very attractive to home buyers.” Wind power has some limitations in the land of tall trees. Fleenor says that in our climate you would want to use a heavy, slow revolutions-perminute turbine, but they are not cheap to install at a starting price of around $20,000. Much of the cost is due to the tower. The rule of thumb is the turbine needs to be at least 20 feet above the highest object within 300 feet of the building in order get into the good laminate wind. “Right now your best cost per watt is solar hot water then photovoltaic because once installed they are pretty much maintenance-free because there are no moving parts. Wind has ongoing costs because the turbine should be tilted down There are many different types of alternative energy once a year to make sure everything is where collectors available, including photovoltaic systems, wind it should be; if you have a high tower it can get turbines and geothermal heating and cooling systems. expensive,” Fleenor says. “If you live in a remote Submitted photos location where there is a cost benefit because bringing hydro to the property is extremely expensive, these different applications are perfect. Most people use a combination in these circumstances, using different systems depending on the weather.” Fleenor says living off-grid is a lifestyle choice. You use the resource when it’s there and modify your life when it’s not. I am familiar with these choices after living with a well; you can’t have a shower while running the dishwasher and putting in a load of laundry. It becomes automatic to space things out, make sure the dishwasher is full and only wash clothes when it’s necessary. I predict there will be more alternative energy sources built into residences which in turn will bring the price down.

Retaining the natural beauty of a stone wall By Maggie Calloway Here’s a skill testing question for you: what was built starting in AD 122 by the Romans as a defensive fortification, is 122 kilometres long, and still has a significant portion existing today? Hadrian’s Wall, which was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. It was made of stones and is built entirely in England, not on the border with Scotland as is frequently stated. The wall was the most heavily fortified border in the Roman Empire, and is now the most popular tourist destination in northern Europe. It’s been described as the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain by England’s heritage association. What other building material would still be standing almost 2,000 years other than the most natural of material? As Ronald Hernandez, owner of Cabana Masonry, says, “Building with masonry is a timeless art form that goes back to the great Egyptian pyramids, Greek temples There are many reasons to install a stone retaining wall, from and Roman cities. Dedicating a room to the art of washing clothes not unusual By Maggie Calloway Remember when the washer and dryer were automatically banished to a dark corner of the basement? Well, no more! Laundry rooms are now not just any room, but a designed room. Doing laundry is now an experience, with top-end appliances, drying racks, linen storage, granite counters and marble backsplashes. I must admit I approve of this metamorphosis; doing laundry was always such a grim but necessary chore. Having the right tools to do a great job applies to this job as well as any other, and a dedicated room fully kitted out is a wonderful thing. So what makes not just a stylish room but one that works well? Looks are important but not as important as workability. Think through the process: where are the soiled clothes stored? If you have side-by-side appliances make sure the doors open the right way; you don’t want to be loading the dryer over the door of the washer. Each should open in the opposite direction so a clear inner space is formed. Shelving for laundry soap, bleach and such should be above the washer and dryer but high enough to allow you to use the top of each appliance as counter space if you are in a small room. And let’s not forget the ironing board; you need enough space to comfortably put up the board and an installed rod to hang up finished items. This rod is also great for drying hand-washed delicates. Interior designer Marlene Bourque of High Design works with John Friswell of CCI Renovations on many of his projects including laundry rooms. “This last laundry room we worked on was originally an office on the main floor of the home. We had room here to put the washer, dryer and sink, etc. on one side of the room
Laundry rooms are no longer hidden corners of the house where you dread visiting. Now, thanks to new innovations in design, it’s easy to drop in a load of laundry and get on with your day. Submitted photos
and a linen closet on the other which left lots of room for an ironing board,” says Bourque. “This is a family with young children so having the laundry room on the main floor made great sense. Having lots of storage in a laundry room is a great luxury.” If your laundry room is small, installing closed upper cabinets could feel confining. Think about open shelving with attractive baskets. Old-time ceiling drying racks are back, somewhat sleeker in design but still doing the same job of drying clothes in an
environmental way. Steal an idea from the garage and install a wall-mounted storage system; it gets everything up off the floor and, done properly, can look quite chic. One thing I love in a laundry room is a very deep sink, again just like the old days, in which you can do many things, from leaving items to soak to washing the dog. This is one room in the house where you can go a little wild with great coloured walls, maybe some wallpaper and let’s not forget a T.V. to help with the ironing. Why not?

Pushing a mower could be an exercise regimen in itself “ from page.1 carburetion systems so they are much easier to start. You can now push a button to prime and the fuel is available immediately to the combustion chamber, no more pulling and pulling hoping the engine will catch, he says. “In my opinion they have designed the system so they will start almost immediately and are much cleaner burning. If you have a larger property or a property that has a sloping lawn, a self-propelled gas mower is the way to go unless you want to fold pushing a lawnmower into your exercise program. Like all things in life, as Chrzanecki says, there is good, better and best and the world of lawnmowers is no different. “You have your basic steel deck push mower; a little better unit would still be a gas mower, still with a steel deck but may be self-propelled and mulch, which is a good thing; mulching is good for your lawn. As you get up the scale you get to a Toro model which they call a super mulcher. It’s an aluminum deck so the deck will not rot; it’s a 25-year machine if looked after. Once you have sorted out what you need in the way of a mower, you need to take care of it if you want it to last and perform at the top of its game. Dana Nicholson, the fulltime mechanic at Foreshore, has 25 years experience with lawnmowers of every stripe. “My advice to everyone with a mower is to really watch which fuel they use and how they use it. The fuel we have from the pump has a very short shelf life; just a few weeks before it starts to break down. I recommend, as most people will have to buy fuel from a gas station, (buying) premium fuel with no ethanol and only buy a gallon at a time, says Nicholson. “I know it’s inconvenient but unlike fuel in our cars which gets used up quickly, gas sits in a lawnmower for weeks and sometimes months. If possible, buy Aspen fuel from a store specializing in lawnmowers or power tools; this fuel is refined down so far it is very clean burning with a long shelf life. The other piece of advice is to keep the blades sharp and clean. Look after the mower and it will do a good job for you.
Al Chrzanecki, above, of Foreshore Equipment and Supply is a fan of the new gas mowers. Dana Nicholson, right, has been fixing lawnmowers for 25 years, and says his top tip is to watch what kind of fuel you use. Martin Knowles photos

Making over a North Vancouver house to turn it into a modern, family-friendly paradise By Maggie Calloway As we so often find, here is a family who loves their North Shore neighbourhood but the house, approximately fifty years old with one partial renovation in the 1990s, was tired. Enter Kennedy Crawford Design of North Vancouver who designed the project, specifically Catherine Brown, who worked with the family very closely during both the design and building process. David Adair of Blackfish Homes and Construction, also based in North Vancouver, was brought into the project to do the actual build. “This is a family of four who enjoyed their home but the whole main floor needed a major renovation to bring it up to today’s standards,” says Adair. “We virtually pulled apart the whole main floor. The original main floor consisted of much the same rooms in the same place. They had a pretty big garage with a small flex space; they weren’t really using this space so we took over a section of the garage and extended it to make a mudroom entry. In the family room we pushed the back wall, the TV wall, back right to the exterior wall to create the space we needed.” The original flooring was a mixture of tile, vinyl and carpet; this was unified throughout most of the rooms with hardwood, which made a huge difference. Vinyl tile was used in the new powder room and mudroom. “In the formal living room the floor was leveled to match of the rest of the area. The fireplace is original but the hearth and pedestal had to be adjusted to the new level of the floor,” Adair says. “The rest of it was just freshening up with new wall colour, addition of wallpaper, new ceiling fan and lighting. The dining room had a French door from the hallway so we opened everything up to make the flow better. We brought the new flooring through and again just freshened everything up with new wall colour, wallpaper, lighting.” The powder room is a good size, but it was gutted and the flooring once again brought through. The new modern vanity and toilet match the new style; there are no jarring accents just a smooth flow to all the rooms including this one. The kitchen and family room is perfect for this family. This is definitely the heart of the home where everyone spends their time. “We really enjoyed this whole project. The family was excellent to work with,” Brown says. “Our client had a very good handle on what she wanted to achieve, particularly regarding the kitchen. She knew very clearly how she wanted to function in that space and how she wanted it to work for her family, then left it to us to bring it to life, giving feedback as the project proceeded.” This kitchen is one of Brown’s favourites. “This is a very large space. You can make spaces look too modern so we like to bring in pieces to soften them, give them more warmth; the barn door was part of bringing in interest,” Brown says. “We really like to find unique pieces; the island is an example of this. We had the design in our mind then had to go and find the right piece with a little bit of the traditional about it. The beautiful stone on the island is a real stand out with the distinctive lines. The funny thing is we had that exact pattern in our original drawings so it was great to find the exact match. We used Caesarstone on the surrounding counters and the backsplash above the stove is a mosaic white marble which adds a bit of an interesting accent. The stove is Fisher & Pykel, the jewel of the kitchen.” Brown says the client was good about communicating her master plan for the kitchen and how she wanted to use the space, which made her job easier. “Every bit of the kitchen and family room, from the wall of storage cupboards with so much detail in the cabinetry, to the fabric chosen, to the colour of the stone, it all had to work together. We have an eye for detail right down to the hardware on the barn door to the faucets, the tile, every single detail is gone through so there are no jarring notes and everything flows,” she says. I must say I love the barn door in the kitchen. I’ve seen them used before but often the room just can’t carry the size and heft but in this instance, with such a large space, it makes sense and looks spectacular. There is no doubt the success of this project is in how the family uses the whole space.
The new kitchen, above, features a mosaic white marble tile backsplash and Caesarstone countertops. The homeowners were intimately involved in the whole process of choosing a design for their home, from deciding on storage spaces to choosing the colour of the stone. The bathroom, left, now includes a modern vanity and toilet, in addition to new flooring and a sleek, modern sink. Martin Knowles photos
The new living room includes the original fireplace, above. The hearth and pedestal were adjusted to match the new height of the flooring, and wallpaper was added to freshen up the room. The new eating area in the kitchen, below, features a beautiful view outside and complements the new backsplash and countertops. Martin Knowles photos
The family room is perfect for relaxing or entertaining. Directly off the kitchen, the back wall was pushed back to open up the space and allow for more room. The television is now mounted on the wall and smart storage solutions appear all over the house. Martin Knowles photo

Brightening up your life with heritage paint By Maggie Calloway There is no getting around it, painting the exterior of your home is a big job whether you decide to tackle it yourself or hire a contractor. We have all heard of curb appeal, and the quality of the paint job, the colours you choose and where you put each colour can make the difference between a stunning exterior and one that just doesn’t work. If you decide to paint it yourself, know that preparation is 80 per cent of the job. Tedious as it may be, taking the time to prep means your house will look great and the job will last. Make sure the wood is dry. In our climate it pays to wait until we have enjoyed a long string of sunny days, as painting over wet wood creates a world of problems, not the least of which is the new paint forming blisters. If you are painting over old paint, scrape off flakes with a wire brush and clean the surface. If there are bare patches, prime before painting. Check to see what kind of paint was used previously then take advice from the paint store about which paint to use. Buy the best paint you can afford; this is not the time to be frugal. You want your home to look fantastic now and for years to come. Is there an art in picking paint colours? Heidi Nyline of Warline Painting certainly believes so. “We have been fortunate to be hired to paint the exteriors of the ‘Painted Ladies’, the four heritage houses on West 10th (in Vancouver) and you can imagine how jarring it would be to get the colour balance wrong,” she says. “The colours are very bright and different on each house; they really make a statement.” We have all agonized over paint colours, especially for the exterior. It’s not like making a colour mistake in the dining room which can be remedied in a day. Nyline says the problem is people are trying to make colour choices from a two- by two-inch paint chip,
which is impossible. “You stand in a paint store and stare at thousands of colours, how are you supposed to put colours together?” Nyline says. “First, take note of everything you can’t change; the roof colour and the colour of the stonework, the colour or your window trim if they are vinyl, etc. Next, (look at) the natural surroundings. If you have a ton of trees around the house that green foliage will impact how colour looks on your house. For instance, if you use paint with a red undertone on a north-facing house with lots of trees, in a certain light the house will have a slightly pink look to it. You have to paint large five-feet by five-feet samples of your preferred colour range on (a) board to get the proper impact of that colour on your house.” The moral of this story is take time. Time to do proper prep work, time to properly chose appropriate colours, time to do the best job possible, or hire someone who cares enough to do the same.
Heidi Nyline of Warline Painting believes that there is an art to choosing paint colours, whether they’re for Vancouver’s “Painted Ladies”, left and below, or for a suburban home in need of a new look, below left. Submitted photos
