A Cloverdale classic turns 65
Our ‘community theatre’ celebrates a milestone
By Jennifer Lang Saturday marks a special date in Cloverdale. It’s the Clova Cinema’s 65th anniversary, a date that will be quietly observed at the family-owned, single screen movie house. It was a grander occasion on May 26, 1947, when the spanking new Clova Theatre, as it was then called, showed its first film – Dead Reckoning, a black and white film-noir starring Humphrey Bogart and Lizabeth Scott. Patrons paid $1 a ticket for the show, a fundraiser for the Surrey Memorial Hospital Society. Regular admission was 35 cents for adults, 20 cents for kids. From its earliest days, the Clova was billed as a community theatre, reflecting the co-operation it took to make it a reality. (Even its name was chosen in a democratic fashion – “Clova” was the winning entry submitted by three separate hopefuls.) Back in 1938, local businessmen
– recognizing the important role a movie theatre played in a well-rounded community – tried to convince the owner of New Westminster’s Columbian to build a theatre in Cloverdale. He wasn’t interested, but promised to put the word out. Eight years later, when U.S. businessmen Lester B. Toffey and Owen Bird promised locals their own theatre, Cloverdalians snapped up $1,000 bonds to pay for construction. The movie house was built, and the bonds were repaid within two years, notes current owner Craig Burghardt, who’s assembled a dossier of historic documents outlining the movie house’s six-plus decades. Someone once gave him a faded black and white photograph taken during construction. There’s a handwritten note on the back. “Dear Mal,” it reads, in blue ink. FILE PHOTO

By Jennifer Lang Last Wednesday marked a sad anniversary for the daughter of a man killed in Cloverdale three years ago. Lexus Whitmee, 12, made an emotional plea to the public to help solve the murder of Christopher Whitmee. “I just wish that everyone would know that I think of him every single day. I miss him every day,” Lexus said, speaking at a press conference at the Surrey RCMP May 16 – three years to the day after her father’s death. The investigation remains open, but Surrey RCMP say it’s been difficult to move the case forward because it’s gangrelated.

Whitmee, a 34-year-old father of two, was in the wrong place at the wrong time, police say. A second shooting victim, a 28-yearold Surrey man, was known to police. At about 11 p.m. May 16, 2009 Whitmee was shot to death in the bathroom of the Legacy Show Lounge in Cloverdale. The establishment has since been shut down. Last year, family and friends staged a flyer campaign, hoping to elicit clues from the public. “Whoever did this to my dad and to my family is out there somewhere, just living their life like everyone else,” Lexus said. “Maybe even having fun times and

By Jennifer Lang Good weather brought out the crowds for the first full day of the 66th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and 142th Country Fair on Saturday, making it one of the best attended days in the past decade. Sunday’s good weather: Not so much. “We were especially delighted to have a sold-out Saturday afternoon Rodeo and had strong attendance at the Sunday afternoon Rodeo despite the weather,” said Shannon Claypool, president of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association. The Cloverdale Rodeo is one of B.C.’s biggest attractions, drawing tens of thousands visitors to the fairgrounds over the May long weekend, including 14,000 rodeo
spectators this year. The invitation-only competition attracts the world’s top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls, who participate in bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding and ladies’ barrel racing events. The Rodeo and Country Fair also saw the first annual Cowboy Cookoff BBQ competition, the World Round-up Freestyle Skateboarding competition and a vintage car show, along with the return of roller derby, monster truck rides, the West Coast Lumberjack Show, the agri-zone and the ever popular midway with rides and other attractions. Saturday morning’s 66th annual Cloverdale Rodeo Parade was also a big hit with the crowds, who turned out in full force.

Old time country
Too much fun? As if there’s any such thing. The Versatiles are at it again, with director Susie Francis and some new blood in the form of the Amazing Kevin (Luti), a very funny guy who just happens to be a talented magician. The Versatiles are presenting Happy Trails, an afternoon of old time cowboy music and fun, along with the music of Gracey and the Guys, at the Cloverdale Legion, Sunday, May 27. Tickets are $5, and get you a seat, a chance to win prizes or get thrown in jail, laugh until you hurt, and to dance the afternoon away. The troupe is having a lot of fun just rehearsing and laughing at all the songs and silliness, bringing back memories of the old performers like Roy, Dale and Gabby. Doors open at noon, and the show begins at 2 p.m. Come early and have lunch, and get the best seat in the house.

Belly flop relatives sought
A writer based in Summerside, P.E.I., is hoping Reporter readers can help him locate the family of a belly flop and cannonball diving competitor. The man, Dale Henderson, is thought to have passed away a number of years ago. But Tom Butler believes Henderson may have family members still living in the Cloverdale area. He’d like to talk to them about the book he’s writing. He’s hoping to get permission to use a photograph of Henderson mid-cannonball dive that once ran in the National Enquirer. Butler, formerly of Vancouver, is writing his forthcoming memoirs, tentatively titled P.R. Man, detailing his 40 fun-filled years in public relations on the West Coast. It should be a fascinating read. Butler is legendary for his inventive stunts, such as the time he took a live beaver to New York City and other major U.S. cities to promote British Columbia’s tourism sector. “That got a lot of press,” he said on the line from P.E.I. But his greatest claim to fame is the World Belly Flop and Cannonball Diving Championships, which he ran and promoted for 12 years. Thousands of spectators turned out to watch the competition at the Bayshore and Coach House Inn. It was a zany spectacle that was picked up by U.S. TV networks and noted for attracting celebrity divers like pro wrestlers Andre the Giant and Gene Kiniski – and Billy Carter, the colourful, beer-brewing brother of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, whom Butler convinced to serve as a judge, twice. If you are a relative of Dale Henderson, please contact the Cloverdale Reporter by calling 604-5752400, or by email at editor@CloverdaleReporter.com and we will forward your contact information. – Cloverdale Reporter

Fact: Elections Canada confirmed that 200 ridings were targeted by illegal robocalls that falsely directed voters to the wrong polling station in the last federal election. Fact: Elections Canada confirmed that it traced the account that paid for the robocalls to a computer from the Conservative campaign in Guelph, Ont. Agreed, the “whodunit” could prove isolated to a few Conservative individuals, but that is secondary (although important). I’d also like to state for the record that in no way do I believe that this riding was targeted. However, here is my point: it is entirely possible that voter wishes

Youth park potential What amenities do you think Cloverdale’s new youth park should have? Skateboarding? BMX, ball hockey and basketball play surfaces – or will it need something else? It’s time to stand up and be counted. The City of Surrey is asking for input on what a new Youth Park for Cloverdale should be like. The city wants to build on the success of the covered, all-weather youth park at Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre, which raised the bar for youth park design. City council and staff are holding a public input session at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre May 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Residents are invited to come by to learn more about “Cloverdale’s exciting new action sports facility” and to provide input on what should be included in the design, organizers say. The city hopes to have a working concept design by July, when the public will once again be invited to offer feedback and comments. The working concept will be unveiled July 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., during the Canada Day festival, at the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre at 64 Avenue and 176 Street. For more information, visit www.Surrey.ca/plansstrategies/11283.aspx. The new youth park will be located at the northeast corner of 176 Street and 62 Avenue – across from the Cloverdale Recreation Centre. The site was chosen because it’s centrally located, close to residential neighbourhoods, near an existing rec centre, and connected to bike and walking paths and near a bus stop.

The Surrey Museum is hosting a celebration in honour of Asian Heritage Month. This Saturday, May 26, drop by the Surrey Museum from 1-3 p.m. for informative displays, crafts, dance, and music performances from China, Korea, and Sri Lanka. Visitors will be able to try their hand at origami, Taiwanese paper ‘Lego’ and watch films at the museum’s theatre. Local author Rebecca Kool, who penned the children’s book Fly Catcher Boy, will also be on hand. She’ll read her story, and use kamishibai storycards, an Asian tradition that originated in Japan involving beautifully-illustrated cards and text, with an English translation on one side. Furoshiki is a Japanese gift wrapping tradition that’s still used today to wrap gifts, pack lunches and create makeshift containers. Visitors will learn how to quickly wrap presents without paper, tape or scissors, thanks to Hop Frog Pond’s Doris Jetz, who will be guiding people in this green-friendly art. The Surrey Museum is located at 17710 56A Avenue, in Cloverdale. For more information, call 604592-6956 or visit www.surrey.ca/heritage.

who have something different about them, such as people who are engaged or people who bring in a “Woody” doll, as they did last August. The art deco-inspired theatre has played host to special events over the years, from weddings and concerts to plays, a gala and a celebration of life. Nearly every week, someone rents it for a kid’s birthday party or a charity screening. Ensuring the theatre can be used for charity fundraisers is an operational mandate and guiding principle for Burghardt, a father, a former baseball coach and volunteer who dreams of launching his own charity one day. As owner for the past 16 years, he’s met thousands of people, and many of them know him by name. “I feel a lot of love from the community. A lot of people say, ‘You’ve got to keep it open. I love this place.” He feels like he’s on a mission

The Cloverdale
By Jennifer Lang The competition was fierce and friendly at the 15th Annual Cloverdale Chili Cook-off at Clover Square Village, Friday May 18 during Rodeo Week in Cloverdale. The crowds who turned out were rewarded with a tantalizing array of chili to sample, from Smokin’ Chipotle Chili to Kev and Steph’s Rockin’ Rodeo Chili – some 16 entries in all, many non-professional. If folks came out for the free chili samples, they certainly stayed for the party, which featured live entertainment by B.C. Junior Talent Search contestants, plus kid-friendly activities like face painting and a colouring contest. The winners are decided by the discerning voting public.
JENNIFER LANG PHOTO
Fraser Downs’ chili included lean beef strips and cilantro, a recipe that earned best themed chili entry.
There were long lines, particularly for the Bettina Reid Group’s chili, which was edged out of the top three. In the end, the voters went with Rusty’s Special Chili, by Rusty’s Neighbourhood Pub, naming their recipe best overall in the 2012 Cloverdale Chili Cook-off. MLAs Kevin Falcon, Stephanie Cadieux and staff failed to reclaim their title, despite having plenty of their secret ingredient on hand – chocolate shavings instead of the more traditional cheddar cheese. Voter Isabella Charon, a past volunteer for the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair, liked Quality Wine Cellar’s Chateau du Vino chili the best. She was looking forward to another spectacular rodeo weekend.

World Round-up Freestyle Skateboard competitors dazzled.
By Jennifer Lang Pucker up, Team Vault. For the third year running, Turkey’s Party Makers has won the Cloverdale Bed Races, besting rival Vault Restaurant in the hotly-contested men’s division, and claiming the coveted bedpan trophy. The win earns Rob ‘Turkey’ Kielesinski a kiss on the cheek from Vault owner Aron Hotell, along with bragging rights. Some 28 teams in three categories took part in the 35th annual races, held May 17. Lord Tweedsmuir Girls Soccer won the ladies’ division, Pacific Community Church claimed the hospitality division, and Fraser Downs was crowned best dressed. Earlier, lots of kids turned out for the Decorated Bike Parade. Pirates, princesses, and Spidey themes were popular. But the best surprise, hands down, were the amazing stunts by competitors from the World Roundup Skateboard championships, who rolled by for a demonstration before heading off to the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. (Afterwards, they were swarmed by autograph-seekers.)
Entrants put their best wheels forward in the kid’s decorated bike contest.
