Beaver Valley Citizen of the Year earns recognition the people,” said Horsland. “Volunteer committees build the community from within.” Horsland’s name will be familiar to many thanks to the 30 years he spent teaching in the Beaver Valley. Now he serves as an art instructor for the UBC West Kootenay Teacher Education Program offered through Selkirk College. It’s that dedication to teaching that has kept him connected

to the people and community. “It keeps me in touch and it keeps me active,” said Horsland. “You can’t teach what you don’t know, I just try to give (students) a good grounding so that they’re confident.” Away from the classroom setting, Horsland devotes any spare time to working with senior citizens and restoration projects. Previously, he volunteered as a summer camp counselor for the United Church and contributed to several specialty art projects. “I think that having a background in art made it easier to set up museum exhibitions,” said Horsland. “Museums are for telling stories, it’s the memory of the community.” Although his passion is art, Horsland organizes and maintains heritage kiosks at the Fruitvale Kootenay Credit Union

A trade token from the Boundary ghost town of Phoenix sold for $131 US last week. The brass token issued by the Royal Billiard Parlor was good for 6¼ cents in trade. According to Leslie C. Hill’s token bible, British Columbia Numismatica, fewer than 10 examples of this token were known to exist as of 1980. (Two slightly different variations exist.) However, there may be more out there, for three others turned up on eBay in the space of five months in 2006. The first was listed for $222 but didn’t sell. It found a

Renee Salsiccioli, coach, said it’s very exciting for her students. “It is exciting, especially from this area, there is a lot of arts here, but it’s not a city where you can go to the theatre every night with ballet and the opera, it’s more sports,” Salsiccioli said. “It’s good to have people realize that kids in this area actually have that opportunity.”
Scam to avoid SUBMITTED
Nelson RCMP have received a report from a Nelsonarea resident about a money-wiring scam. A fraudulent cheque is sent (in this case, $3,996.68), the recipient is advised in writing from a company that they have been selected to participate in a paid consumer research program as a Consumer Service Evaluator. They are instructed to send a money-gram ($3,206) to a pair of mystery shoppers.
The scam advises that this is all part of their training on the way to becoming a full time Consumer Service Evaluator. The RCMP would like to remind you to remain guarded when instructed to send money to unknown sources, no matter the circumstances or how appealing the financial proposition may be. Fraudulent scams of this nature can be reported to your local Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-4958501.

Lehbauer honoured by hospice association
The Castlegar Hospice Society is proud to announce that Executive Director Suzanne Lehbauer is the recipient of the prestigious BC Hospice Palliative Care Association & Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem Award Recognizing End-ofLife Care for British Columbians. The award is being given for an Advanced Care Planning Community Engagement Project that Suzanne developed. She will be given the award, along with $5000.00 to go towards the project at the BCHPCA Conference in Vancouver on May 25. This is the second time Suzanne has received the award. The first was in 2009 and made Castlegar the first small rural community to win. “I found out yesterday,” said Lehbauer of the major kudo on May 22. “I was planning to go to the conference anyway, I do every year. But this (award and money for Castlegar’s Hospice effort) is just icing on the cake.” Grand Forks Bikes to shine After a one-year hiatus, a motorcycle show is set to return to Grand Forks. With May being Motorcycle Awareness month, the Show and Shine is returning to the Overwaitea parking lot in Grand Forks on Saturday, May 26, beginning at 10 a.m. “What we do is we try to do this on an annual basis and raise awareness for motorcycle safety – for vehicles to share the road with motorcycles, explained organizer Diane Muscroft.
Bikers will be displaying their motorcycles and there will be an Awareness Ride, which will go to Rock Creek leaving at around 1 p.m. By donation. Grand Forks considering MFLNRO fuel management proposal
The City of Grand Forks is considering a proposal from the Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) to remove fire hazardous material near Angus MacDonald Park. The plan would consist mostly of pruning and thinning of trees and removing of debris that could serve as fuel (i.e. ponderosa pine needles) on cityowned land behind Extra Foods and adjacent to the park. Trail No cash coming The province giveth and the province taketh away. With only 80 per cent of the money saved when teachers embarked on their three-day job action in March being released by the province to local school districts, School District 20 (Kootenay-Columbia) is now asking for the remaining 20 per cent. The SD20 board of trustees has sent a letter to the Ministry of Education asking for the entire sum — $282,265 — to be returned. The province only agreed to fork over $228,265 to SD20 through the Learning Improvement Fund, opting to keep the rest. With school districts across the province tightening their belts, and SD20 hav-

ing to absorb a $1.55 million shortfall due to decreased funding in their 2012/13 budget — it was only fair to return the extra funds, said board chair Darrell Ganzert, since it was destined for the district in the first place. “We would prefer it be returned to us so we could apply it to (this year’s) budget,” he said. Second access gets second life
A second access road to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital is getting a second life as Trail city council has resurrected the issue and placed it back on the regional district table. On May 9 council reaffirmed its commitment for construction of a second access route to the hospital — an issue in the city for nearly a decade — with a letter of support. In mid April the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board of directors made a call for letters of support from all municipalities and electoral areas to see if the project had any appeal, either regionally or just locally. Trail was the first municipality to sign back on to the proposed $2-million project, but it still has plenty of hurdles and commitments to obtain, as well as de-
termining the city’s annual cost for the venture, said councilor Robert Cacchioni. He said if the entire region elected to contribute to the undertaking, it would cost Trail $34,583 (23.5 per cent) over the 20-year lifespan of the borrowing, but $64,943 (44.13 per cent) per year if only the seven East End communities — including Rossland, Warfield, Montrose, Fruitvale, and electoral areas A and B — signed on.

This year’s market was up in the air because of the construction going on in downtown Rossland, where the market is usually held. The market committee is still working with the city to find a suitable location, but they said that so far the most likely spot would be on Queen Street, near the Old Fire Hall. To find out more about the market or to become a vendor, visit www.rosslandfood. com.

Entertainment Maybe comic will find the castle this time CRAIG LINDSAY Weest Kootenay Advertiser
The last time Ivan Decker was in Castlegar he couldn’t find any castles. This time out may not prove any more fruitful in terms of finding any castles in Castlegar, but rest assured, he will once again bring the laughs. “I was a little disappointed the first time I came given that there were zero castles,” he said. “I thought there would be at least one. I don’t know how many constitute a ‘gar’.” Decker was here in October as part of the Yuk Yuk’s Tour at the Fireside Inn with fellow comedians Marcus Beaubier and Garrett Clark. This time, the youthful jokester will be the headliner for Stand up for Charity at the Element Club Bar and Grill in Castlegar and at the Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail. Opening for Decker will be Sunni Dhaliwal. The event is hosted by the Kin Club of Trail and goes May 31

treal Just for Laughs festival and has had numerous TV and radio appearances including his own halfhour comedy special on CTV. “I just finished recording a DVD two nights ago,” he said. “I’m currently on tour in Victoria. Right now it’s fun being a comedian. I’m at the point now where I’m flirt-
ing with the idea of quitting my day job. I’m on the cusp.” He’s excited about his upcoming visit. “I’m thrilled to be coming to Castlegar and Trail,” he said. “I always like it there. It’s fun.” Decker describes his comedy as observational, much like Jerry Seinfeld or Brian Regan. “It’s generally pretty clean,” he said. “It’s more silly than it is dirty. I try to make it fun. I’m not trying to alienate anyone. I want everyone to enjoy the show. “The style I do - I try to make the jokes relatable for anyone. Old people, young people, anyone can come out and have a good time.” Decker’s family is from Saskatchewan but he grew up in Vancouver. “I grew up in the suburbs,” he said. “I moved into the big city at 19 and started to do comedy then. I’ve been doing comedy pretty steadily since then. I’ve been on Just for Laughs.

1-2. This year, Bridger is joined by local painters Susan Parr, Mari-
lyn McCombe and Tea Preville. All work will be on sale for up to 70 per cent off original prices. “It’s a great opportunity for us to clear out our studios and make room for new work,” says Bridger, “it’s an amazing opportunity for art lovers and patrons to pick up work by their favourite artists at unbelievable prices.” Bridger is an awardwinning artist, known for her intricate work and realism in all subjects from landscapes and house portraits to rusty old cars and abstracts. Parr, who participated in the last Fantastic Art Sale, is largely self-taught and favours acrylics. She usually paints in her studio referring
to sketches she has produced in the field. She is not shy about colour, creating abstracts and vibrant landscapes with equal aplomb. Also an accomplished acrylic painter, McCombe boldly applies colour and dramatic form to her work. She is inspired by the beauty of her surroundings and strives to evoke specific moods and responses from those who enjoy her work. “The last time I put on such a sale was in 2009 and it was a great success, remarks Bridger. The two-day event opens in the Emporium Room at the Hume Hotel on Friday, June 1 and runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Great Caesar’s ghost! ... a production called... ‘Shazam!’ CASSANDRA CHIN West Kootenay Advertiser
Superheroes united in the auditorium at Grand Forks Secondary School during the 11th Street Kids Theatre’s production of “Shazam!” on May 17. An original play written by writer and director Jean Pinto, it was inspired by classic super heroes and villains, and an old army uniform. Pianist and musical director Liz Mason
performed the music. “I told everybody that we were doing a show on superheroes because I knew that I had heard about a show about superheroes called Shazam,” Pinto said. “I looked and looked and there was nothing. There was no show that I could find.” Pinto jokes that she is around the same age as Superman and grew up when superheroes were really big, during the golden age of comics

in the 1950s. “So cell phones weren’t in their
realm,” she said. “The other thing about superheroes was that
they had day jobs.” Pinto decided to create a play with
superheroes called “Shazam!”mostly because she liked the word. After finding her aunt’s Second World War uniform in her basement, which is similar to what Wonder Woman would have worn, she created the play. The story is about a little girl’s pointed determination that Wonder Woman was her grandmother and her family’s reluctance to believe her. Sloan MacDonald
(Erika Burroughs) pairs up with friends to bring superheroes back from another dimension but instead of superheroes, out come the villains. The final play ever by the 11th Street Kids Theatre will be “Shrek,” a musical comedy about a grouchy, selfish green ogre who enjoys living in peaceful solitude in his swamp, until it is disrupted by fairy-tale beings. The date is to be announced.

Two-tone dogwood a visual treat This blooming floral beauty was noticed and admired on May 17. The tree is in the yard of Frances Vanderpol in Robson - a dogwood tree with pink and white blossoms. It may not be un-heard of to come across a pink and white Dogwood, but someone in the business, Linda from the Castlegar branch of Columbia Greenhouses, says the Eddie’s White Wonder is the most common, and as far as she is aware the two-colour variety is relatively rare. The well-known Pacific Dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) was adopted in 1956 as British Columbia’s floral emblem, but this pictured variant of the flowering dogwood (Cornus Florida) in native to the eastern part of the continent. In an area and a season full of great sights, this one proved to be attention-grabbing. Jim Sinclair photo

I recently had a very interesting meeting with a representative of Teck Trail Operations and learned something that I am not sure many people are aware of. Teck has been at the forefront of metals recycling since they developed the first lead-acid battery recycling program in Canada over 20 years ago. Today, battery waste is received from all over North America and the recycled lead from these vehicle batteries composes up to 20 percent of the total refined lead produced at Trail Operations.

orescent light bulbs. Teck has the technology and knowledge to recycle fluorescent lighting in a way that recovers the contained mercury. This both prevents the mercury in light bulbs from contaminating the environment and returns it to a commodity state. It is very heartening to see that our major economic driver is also striving to be part of the solution to reduce post consumer waste going to landfills. For more information on Teck’s electronic recycling program visit www.teck. com/recycling or call their office at: 250364-1048.

Action-packed couple of days on West Kootenay area golf links SUBMITTED
It was a busy weekend for Junior Golf with a two day event that doubled as the regular Junior Circuit as well as the qualification tournament for the BC Junior. All the juniors played 18 holes Saturday in Castlegar and then 18 holes Sunday at Birchbank. The Browell brothers, Trevor, Aiden and Jesse, from Champion Lakes made their first start and played
well considering it was their first event in a two day tournament with the added pressure of Junior Scoreboard ranking points. It was good to see James Booth playing after taking time off to recover from shoulder surgery, and finally Amber Arnold from Castlegar posted her best tournament round of the year with a 78 on Saturday in Castlegar. In the competition for the four automatic exempt spots into the
BC Junior, Tyler McKay from RTCC took medalist honors with a two day total of 149. Brenan Moroney also from the RTCC and Jordan Hoodikoff from Christina Lake tied for second at 150 and Braden McKay earned the fourth spot with a total of 163. Tyler and Brenan both held a share of the lead at the end of the day on Saturday with identical rounds of 74. Braden and Jordan were tied
at 78 after Day 1 and Ryan Fullerton was five back of the fourth spot with an 83 and Alex Rugg was six shots behind with an 84. Early Sunday it became a three player battle for first. The lead changed hands four times between Brenan, Tyler and Jordan. It came down to the 18th hole where Brenan missed a four foot par putt, and Jordan a 12 foot eagle putt that would have sent the kids to extra holes.
In the race for the fourth Braden, who had started the day with a five shot lead, struggled early in his final round and both Ryan Fullerton and Alex Rugg from Champion Lakes made an early run for the fourth spot. After nine holes Braden’s lead had shrunk to two shots, but a birdie on the par five 10th then a run of four pars in a row was enough for him to hold on. Garrett Underwood and Nolan
Renwick struggled on Saturday in Castlegar but both kids posted much better results on Sunday and Garrett ended up finishing a three way tie for fifth with Ryan Fullerton and Alex Rugg and Nolan finished alone in eight. Two more Zone 1 spots will still be awarded for the BC Junior. These spots will be selected based on a PBE (Performance Based Entry) and consideration will be given for kids
that have had a prior commitment to provincial high performance camps. For any player who does not get into the BC Junior Championship they can apply to Monday qualify at the site. Applications can be made on line at the BCGA web site. There is also the BC Juvenile Championship, for kids 16 and under that any player can register to compete in. Applications for this can also be made on line.
Perfectly Predictable
Buying a used car was once an unpredictable experience. That’s no longer the case at Castlegar Hyundai. With Hyundai’s Certified Pre-Owned Program, you’ll enjoy complete confidence that only the best vehicles are chosen to meet the manufacturer’s strict certification standards.
Perhaps just as importantly, Hyundai extends preferred finance rates to qualified buyers, making cost of ownership predictably lower. To learn more, contact one of our product advisors about vehicle selection and eligibility. One thing we can’t predict is which pre-owned Hyundai you’ll fall in love with.
Brilliant. CASTLEGAR Our factory-trained technicians perform an exhaustive 120-point inspection, and a comprehensive warranty is included in the unlikely event that something should arise.

Horoscope
Michael O’Connor
Week
ffor th the
M a 25, 2012 May
Tip of the Week: A Solar Eclipse is considered a super charged New Moon in Astrology. As a feature of prediction, Astrologers look at the pattern of New Moons over the course of about 12-18 months, sometimes looking back to the previous Solar Eclipse, to gain a rhythmic overview, and especially to current and upcoming eclipses to determine future events, trends and themes. Specifically, the exact degree of the New Moons, Solar and Lunar Eclipses determines their impact in relation to the exact degrees of the planets and angles in a ‘person’s chart. The recent Solar Eclipse occurred at 0 Gemini 21 in the Tropical Zodiac. So, anyone with planets or angles ranging from about 28 to 2 degrees of any sign will especially feel the impact most strongly, as an evolutionary theme over the course of the next six months. The key to knowing how to tune-in is to know the facts and to pay attention. This week’s Horoscope offers a general interpretation of this Solar Eclipse for each sign. Since Venus is also in Gemini and retrograde, its themes will be woven into the interpretations and guidance offered. Such influences can go either way and it is ideal to be aware in order to consciously choose and co-create in alignment with the themes implied. This is a core feature of responsible Astrology.
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
The Solar Eclipse in Gemini for you will activate your perceptions. Many new thoughts, ideas and ways of perceiving reality are already being established. This will impact the harmony and flow of your relationships as well. Be careful of projected expectations and stubborn and controlling tendencies. Intend to listen better and pay attention to others.
Last week’s Solar Eclipse is destined to increase your self-esteem. Ego inflation is the possible downside. If this occurs, your regard for others will diminish so be your own witness. Genuine self-acknowledgement, self-acceptance and self love are the implied ideal modes of attunement. Aim for security that transcends material possessions and positions of power.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
The Solar eclipse in your sign is activating new initiatives and perhaps a new quality and style of self-expression. It will have a strong impact on your relationships and public and professional status. At best you will shine brighter than ever. At worst, you will feel hungry for attention and no amount of it will satisfy. Do take new leads and express more genuine gratitude for best results.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
Your subconscious mind will be activated by this eclipse cycle. Deciphering the differences between dreams, visions, goals, intentions and fantasies is an ideal approach. At best, you will feel extra inspired, imaginative and creative. While reflecting upon the past can bring joy and prove interesting and fruitful, be careful not to get lost in yesterday.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
New philosophies will flow into your life over the next several months due to the current eclipses. You will also feel the desire for more freedom. This can be from certain relationships and/or beliefs. You will be happier ‘not to feel you have to’ do anything you do not feel like doing. Enjoy more time on your own and take time to reflect on the bigger picture.
A rich mix of perspectives, emotions, desires and ambitions are being activated by the current eclipse cycle. You may feel as though your thoughts and emotions are all over the map. At best, you will experience a rising sense of power and determination. This stands to be an important breakthrough period and you will make decisions ‘letting the cards fall where they may’.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
Some of your most important relationships will undergo significant change in the wake of this eclipse cycle. These stand to produce extremes of thoughts, perception, attitude and emotion. Your willingness and ability to exercise a healthy degree of acceptance and/or detachment and to see yourself and others with added measures of objectivity will help a lot.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
Your usual rhythms and routines in your lifestyle are scheduled for change. The current eclipse cycles will activate you to be healthier somehow. Overcoming any insecurities and replacing them with new levels of confidence stands to be a core goal. Beware of expecting and demanding more of others than they can or should realistically deliver.
New friendships and group associations are being stimulated by the recent Solar Eclipse. Dreams of what could be are floating in your mind. Striking a balance between current realities and future aims will prove important. You may yearn for more recognition than you are receiving. If it is not forthcoming reactive indifference and cynicism may result. Focus your creative energies deliberately.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
Your public, social and professional spheres and your overall mode of expression in these are being activated by this Solar Eclipse. Reviewing all you have achieved thus far in your life in these all-important arenas is the call. Acknowledge your achievements, forgive your mistakes and intend to present a cleaner, more mature and healthier image to the world.

A fresh wave of creative inspiration, leadership and confidence is being activated by the recent eclipse. This has perhaps been a long time coming. However, be careful of going to the opposite extreme. Intend to integrate the positive influences and focus on creative thinking and activity. Within six months your perspectives stand to be changed in very significant ways, for the better.
Changes close to home will be activated by this eclipse. Most simply you will feel inspired to create more beauty and comfort. Getting too comfortable and escaping into your home and/or comfort zones is the basic issue. Moves or other noticeable changes in your family are also quite likely. Expect more visits and communications with your family of origin.
