Mountainfest organizers announced the 2012 festival has been cancelled due to low ticket sales. Music festival cancelled again Active Mountain calls off Mountainfest 2012 because of low ticket sales By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

With two months to go before country musicians were set to take the stage, the Merritt Mountain Music Festival has been cancelled due to low ticket sales, announced Active Mountain Entertainment on Tuesday. “It is with deep regret that the management of the Merritt Mountain Music Festival has come to the sad decision to cancel the 2012 edition of Mountainfest,” read an announcement posted on the festival website. The announcement cited slow ticket sales as the reason for the cancellation. “Although ticket sales had shown the promise of a solid attendance

number when going on sale back in October of 2011, sales slowed down considerably from then on and have not rebounded thereafter,” it read. Despite a revival in 2011, this is the second time in three years organizers have cancelled the festival. Mountainfest, which drew as many as 140,000 people over five days at its peak, was halted after 17 years in 2010 because of financial concerns caused by a decline in attendance coupled with the high cost of performers. After a comeback last year, festival co-founder Claude Lelievre remained optimistic despite low attendance and said the festival was ready to grow. In October 2011, Lelievre told the Herald festival plans for 2012 were three months

ahead of schedule. The company also posted the cancellation notice to the Merritt Mountain Music Festival Facebook page, and while many fans were supportive, others suggested a “poor line-up” was to blame for the low ticket sales. The line-up included Gary Allen and Gord Bamford, but many of the performers were relatively unknown. Lelievre responded to criticism on Facebook and said since September he has tried to secure a “huge name” headliner for the festival by making offers on Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Reba McIntire and Sheryl Crow among others, but was unable to close any of them. “This has been the most challenging year that I have experi-

enced in the past 35 years of my being in the entertainment business,” he wrote, adding that though he was not disappointed with the roster, he had no other option but to cancel the festival. “This festival simply cannot be produced with only a few hundred fans wishing for it to continue.” The cancellation notice thanks patrons, volunteers and sponsors who “historically made what Mountainfest meant to hundreds of thousands of country music fans over the past 18 years.” The notice says nothing of the future, but concludes with “good bye to all.” The company said those who already purchased tickets for the festival should call their credit card provider and request a refund.

B.C. municipalities can’t keep up with the constant downloading of expenses brought on by cost-cutting provincial and federal governments, Merritt Mayor Susan Roline says. The elected head of Merritt and 85 other mayors met in Penticton from Wednesday to Friday last week for the inaugural BC Mayors’ Caucus to discuss the challenges B.C. municipalities face. “We are all seeing the crunch of the constant downloading of the other two orders of government and I think we need to address it because we can’t keep going the way it is,” she said. “We can’t just keep raising taxes every time they download something onto us that they’re actually collecting the taxes for.” These include issues that should be funded provincially such as health care, mental illness, cold-weather shelter and water testing, said Roline. Open dialogue with B.C. Premier Christy Clark and ministers is needed before the crunch becomes unmanageable, she said. The mayors are scheduled to attend the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference in Victoria this fall. Caucus Steering Committee member Mayor Shari Green of Prince George said the meetings helped communicate a clear message. “This was an incredibly beneficial meeting where it became evident that B.C. mayors have, for the first time, come together as peers with a single voice. Nicola-Similkameen School District 58 is moving ahead with the implementation of an iPad pilot project. The district will decide in the next several weeks which school will be given the devices at the beginning of next school year in September. Trustees and administration have discussed the possibility of having one iPad for every two students at Central Elementary School. The devices are gradually being used by schools throughout North America instead of laptops. “I saw one teacher use the iPads to teach an entire geometry lesson,” said Superintendent Bob Peacock at a regular school board meeting on Wednesday. “These aren’t replacing teachers, they are a tool.” District Computer Support Co-ordinator Jason McAllister showed school trustees and administration an iPad-projected novel that reads along with

The device reads to students and the class is able to highlight a word, rather than stopping reading, finding a dictionary, looking the word up and then continuing reading. The technology can also test students at-large and send the results to the teacher who can then see which students understand the lesson. Approximately $60,000 is earmarked for the cost of the iPads, which is what SD 58 spent on laptops last year. McAllister and his team have been in discussions with Apple Inc. for several months. Various schools and teachers

have also contributed to conversations. “There is a lot of excitement from teachers and administrators,” he said. “People are in line.” But SD 58 could have some difficulty satisfying the requests of every school. Peacock said some schools will be left out, but the program may be extended next year. Many of the iPads arrived last Wednesday afternoon. Now it’s a matter of educating the teachers so they can easily instruct students about how to use the devices. “Teachers have come up with some suggestions and willingness to put in extra time to learn about iPads,” McAllister said. “You have to make sure your teachers will be able to use them.”

Crown and council had little to say about why Staff Sgt. Stuart Seib’s appearance was bumped, other than they had received that instruction. Crown spokesman Neil MacKenzie said after the initial Feb. 21 court appearance was delayed that his office was still reviewing the RCMP investigative report. However, he wasn’t available for comment about the latest delay before press time. Charges are expected to be

He said teachers may be able to take the iPads over the summer to become experts. Administration is reviewing schools’ current equipment and determining what might be compatible with the devices. The district will also need to purchase Apple TVs, which would help teachers project lessons. Eight projectors from Coquihalla Middle School — which closes on June 30 — could be used to assist in the process.

Budget Approved Trustees approved the SD 58 2012-13 school year budget. Staff are forecasting a $567,000 shortfall in funding next year. However, the district has a contingency reserve that can be used. Swan Elected to Board of Directors SD 58 Trustee Gordon Swan was elected in April to the BC Schools Trustee Association’s Board of Directors. This is his fifth term and fifth year as a director. He

Additional charges are pending.

From Page 1 the benefit of all of our residents.” The mayors released a joint statement: “The BC Mayors’ Caucus requests an immediate discussion on the efficient use of existing resources to better address the challenges our residents face.” Municipalities receive approximately eight per cent of total taxes, but deliver transportation, police and fire services, sewerage and garbage, water, culture and recreation, public health and animal control, and landuse planning. The province receives 42 per cent and the federal government tallies 50 per cent. The meeting was held at the Penticton Lakeside Resort. The Mayors developed 11 areas that they said need to be addressed: • Create a premier’s roundtable with the BC Mayors’ Caucus to discuss policy changes that affect local governments and service delivery; • Eliminate the ad hoc granting process in favour of one that is sustainable, accountable, quantifiable and allows for long-term local government planning; • Expand the mandate of the Municipal Auditor General to include an examination of the financial impacts of downloading on local government; • Develop a roundtable on aging infrastructure that includes federal, provincial and local government participation; • Affirm the core service delivery of each order of government; • Redesign the cost sharing formula for significant infrastructure projects to reflect the tax revenue distribution; • If services are devolved to local governments, a sustainable revenue source for those services must be identified; • Develop a co-ordinated approach to how social services are delivered into a community; • Call for a full review of ambulance service delivery; • Establish flexibility around the federal gas tax to be goal-oriented to the priorities of the specific communities; • Expand the application of the fair share principles province-wide and to include other industry sectors.

Seventy-three local Nicola Valley Institute of Technology students donned caps and gowns, and walked across the stage to celebrate their graduation on May 17. The graduation recognized the students’ completion of a variety of locally-offered programs including Aboriginal Early Childhood Education, Business Administration, Health Care, Chemical Addictions, Law Enforcement and the Bachelor of Social Work program. The ceremony took place at the Merritt Civic Centre, following a luncheon and group photos, and included speeches

from local government representatives, alumni and NVIT President Ken Tourand. Tourand recognized the institute’s five founding bands and announced that this year marked the largest number of students enrolled at NVIT in the school’s history. A week earlier, on May 10, the NVIT’s Vancouver Campus held their graduation ceremonies honouring over 70 students graduating in various programs including Chemical Addictions, First Nations Speech and Language, Social Work and Associate of Arts. NVIT Board Chair Angela Wesley called NVIT the “home of Aboriginal Education in the province,” and said the growth of the school

represents the progress First Nations people are making. “We’ve lived in a time of constant change and as a people we are not only surviving, but we’re continuing to thrive once again,” she said. Tourand said NVIT has partnerships with 25 First Nations communities and said 70 per cent of the province’s Aboriginal bands are represented at NVIT. Tourand also said the administration is working to establish more partnerships with other post secondary schools in the province to make it easier for NVIT students to transfer their credits. “Students should be able to go to any other post secondary school in the province and we’re

working on that,” he said. According to NVIT’s website, the school has successfully negotiated transferability of many of its courses with most of the colleges, institutes and universities in B.C. Additionally, Tourand mentioned existing partnerships with Thompson Rivers University, Simon Fraser University and Vancouver Community College. Many of the speakers also reminded students that their graduation from NVIT represents a chance to make a difference in their communities. “Graduation is a time of year to celebrate new beginnings; it is a time when you re-emerge and show the world your new found knowledge,” said Wesley.

What is a Zoning Bylaw? • The Zoning Bylaw contains provisions that regulate the use, size, height, density and location of buildings on properties within the city as well as parking and landscaping requirements. • The basic purpose of a Zoning Bylaw is to regulate what can be built and how big buildings can be on a property. • The Zoning Bylaw also includes maps that clearly identify “zones” to facilitate land use management and protect the community from conÁicting land uses. • Zoning Bylaws help planners, developers, real estate agents and members of the public make informed decisions about where and what to build in Merritt. • The Zoning Bylaw regulates the community’s vision and provides guidelines that direct future development within the City. Why are we reviewing the Zoning Bylaw? • The City of Merritt’s OfÀcial Community Plan (OCP) was adopted in 2011. The OCP provides the vision and guidance for the Zoning Bylaw. • Updating the Zoning Bylaw ensures that the regulatory tools are consistent with the OCP’s goals and objectives. Next Steps • Complete Community Open House • Review and update existing Zoning Bylaw • Adopt new City of Merritt Zoning Bylaw For more information See the City of Merritt’s website at www.merritt.ca

Merritt competes as Ultimate Fishing Town THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

Pull out the rod and drag a hook through a lake — Merritt is in the running as Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town. The World Fishing Network (WFN) is once again taking submissions for the destination fishing location in the nation, with a $25,000 cheque for the winner. Local fishing guru Mharie Sinclaire suggested Merritt as the Ultimate Fishing Town to the WFN. “There is so much variety of fishing here,” she said. “You get low lakes, high lakes, small lakes, big lakes, you can use float tubes, you can use speed boats, it doesn’t matter. You’ve got everything... Plus, we have a big variety of fish, ya know.” Sinclaire has been fishing the Nicola

Valley for the past 25 years or so. She said Merritt could use the $25,000 prize to develop a lake to make it more accessible to seniors. “I would make it only accessible for seniors and kids,” she said, noting the lake would be wheelchair accessible and the roads would be relatively flat. Merritt Mayor Susan Roline credited Sinclaire as being among the top women flyfishers. “I think having her in Merritt bodes well for our reputation as a great place for fishing,” she said. “She actually relocated here just for that reason.” The prize amount could go to fishing classes, which Sinclaire already offers, Roline added. “I think to encourage young people to

get involved in the sport would be a good thing.” According to Sandy Curnow, manager at the Merritt Baillie House Information Booth, many people visit the Valley to try their angling luck. “Fishing and camping is one of the more popular things people ask about when they come here,” she said, noting she often hands out information related to Nicola Valley lakes. “We’re close to Vancouver, so this is the first place people hit when they leave the coast.” But it will take a lot of voting to beat the 48,000 vote lead firstplaced Hastings, Ont., has over Merritt’s 250 votes, and 37th placement as of press time. Spences Bridge is the top B.C. community, ranked 5th with nearly 8,000 votes.

The World Fishing Network website describes Merritt as the “home to prized rainbow and steelhead trout.” The site credits Nicola Lake as having more than 20 fish species. “The famous Douglas Lake Ranch has trophy rainbow lakes, and those of

Stump Lake are not far.” Along with the cash prize, the winning community will be featured on WFN. Second place wins $5,000, while third nets $2,500. To vote for Merritt, visit http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/ uft/town/merritt-bc. Voting ends May 31.

HERALD OPINION Provincial sales tax set to return The provincial government is bringing back the provincial sales tax (PST). It had no choice — it was told to do so by voters last summer in the HST referendum. The harmonized tax, and most specifically, the way it came about, was so reviled that a majority of voters were prepared to bring back the PST. This despite the fact that the PST is not as efficient a tax, and does not come with the tax credits that the HST does. Voters weren’t even swayed by a provincial promise to reduce the HST to 10 per cent, which would be two per cent lower than the GST and PST. The provincial Liberal government had no one to blame but itself. But it has now done what it had to do, and the new PST looks like it will be at least a little simpler for businesses to deal with. Payments can be made online and timelines will be more harmonized with the GST remittance schedule. While the government’s new PST bill does not specify what goods and services will be exempt from PST, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said the exemptions will be similar to those under the old PST. The list of goods and services to be exempted will be published as a regulation, making it easier for the government to add and take away from the list of exempt items. While this naturally has raised some suspicions, as the Liberals’ record on the HST has been one of a long series of broken promises, it will probably be more efficient. It will be up to the media, opposition politicians and the public to publicize PST exemptions and any changes to them. The entire HST exercise was beneficial in several respects. It showed that citizens have the power to put limits on governments that exceed their mandates. There was no promise of an HST in the 2009 election. Two months later, it was government policy. B.C. referendum law allowed citizens to overthrow this reversal in policy. The HST debacle caused one premier to leave office and may yet cause the defeat of the government. Future governments will be much more cautious in going against public will, and refusing to listen to reasonable concerns. – Langley Times

During any given week, there are more interesting things happening in Merritt than we have space to include in the paper. Unfortunately, we are also limited by the number of hours in a workday. With three people contributing stories in our newsroom, there are only so many stories that we can write. There are, however, a few ways you can be

confident your story will make the cut. First, the only way to absolutely guarantee a place in the newspaper is to pay for an ad. Pay for an ad and you determine what information appears in the paper and how much space you get. If you aren’t as willing to fork over the cash, but would like to see your name in print, here are a few more options: • Run for city council. With Norm Brigden resigning from council, the city will be holding a byelection Sept. 15 to fill the vacant seat at the council table. Not only

If you feel you would be unsatisfied with local coverage and want to make sure your story is picked up by news outlets across the nation, then take the lead from Merritt’s former RCMP detachment commander, Staff Sgt. To the Editor, We would like to thank the community for participating in the 11th Annual Worldwide Free Comic Book Day. It was wonderful to see so many people get excited, show up in costume and line up outside our door at opening. We gave away over 1500 free comics to promote literacy for youth, spreading the word that comics are terrific reading. We had face painting, a special effects demonstration, customizable card game demonstrations, a showcase of the latest 3D computer gaming, for all to try and it was a lot of fun. Hope to see you all next year! Thank you everyone for supporting our local businesses. Country Bug Books & Gifts Merritt, BC

With the recent news that Merritt’s famous country music festival got the axe this year, this creates an opening for someone else to try their hand at festival organizing and make a name for themselves. WorkBC launches downtown Merritt office By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

WorkBC formally launched their new Merritt Employment Services Centre on Friday with the goal of executing programs similar to those formerly offered by Community Futures Nicola Valley at the same location. The program will essentially be identical to what was formerly offered at the Quilchena Avenue location, but instead of block funding from the government, the province will allocate funding on a case-bycase basis, which could make the application process stricter. “This will change how clients are accessing the services,”

said Brian Sims, executive director for Community Futures Thompson Country, noting WorkBC took over on April 1. “There will now be a more comprehensive application process for each service. [The government] is trying to be more accountable with taxpayers’ dollars.” The transition essentially has the same staff performing the same job in their former positions. NDP MLA for Fraser-Nicola Harry Lali said the program is an essential service to the community. “We always approve of provincial or federal dollars that can support our community, which has high unemployment and lots of suffering

Tax notices to arrive soon Tax mail-out has info about home owner grants By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

Merritt property owners can expect to receive their tax notices soon, said Merritt Deputy Financial Services Manager Ben Currie. Notices were mailed out on May 17, and owners will have until July 3 to pay their taxes. Individual property tax notices also contain a flyer reminding owners of the home owner grants available through the provincial government. “We’re putting an extra push for home owner grants to be submitted online through the City of Merritt website,” said Currie. Home owner grants are available to Canadian citizens or those with permanent residency status in Canada, who live

in B.C. Owners can only claim the grant for their primary residence. According to the B.C. government website, the purpose of the grant is to help reduce the amount of residential property tax British Columbians pay. Owners need to apply for the grant each year. Property owners can claim their grants at www.merritt.ca. In order to submit an online claim, owners will need the roll number and access code included on the front of individual tax notices. Merritt tax notices also contain a breakdown of the 2012 tax rates, and an explanation that Merritt is responsible for collecting taxes on behalf of other authorities including the Thompson Nicola Regional District.

businesses,” he told the media. “Employment services are needed so that people can get information about their job search. This helps people who have a hard time finding work.” Minister of Social Development Stephanie Cadieux sent a written speech that Lali read: “The services

you offer will help unemployed people access the supports they need to get back to work quickly and provide for their families,” she stated. “Getting back to work is good for individuals and their families, and it’s good for communities and the province as a whole.” WorkBC is located at 2099 Quilchena Ave.

Start thinking about a different kind of home insurance

DAVID L. BROWN Managing YOUR MONEY Mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, are some of the affectionate ways we describe family members who are unique and irreplaceable. If an accident or illness, a disability or even death claimed one of the unique and irreplaceable people in your life, what would you do? Certainly there would be unavoidable consequences to your personal and family life but there are some financial consequences that you could alleviate with the right insurance coverage. Life insurance could provide tax-free funds at a critical time to pay your mortgage or other household debts or as a source of investment income to replace the income from an irreplaceable other. • Term life insurance can be a good starter option for younger

couples but gets more expensive over time and does not allow you to renew after age 75 or 80. • Permanent life insurance stays in force for a lifetime and the premiums are set at the time of purchase and depending on the policy acquired may never change. If the family member is a business-owner, life insurance could be used to repay business debt or a co-owner could obtain key person insurance on the family member and use it to buy out their interest in the business. Mortgage insurance will cover your mortgage debt. You can get mortgage insurance from your lender but the more flexible option is renewable term insurance that allows your named beneficiaries to use the proceeds to pay off some or all of the mortgage or other pressing expenses. Disability insurance can provide a source of income should a key family member become unable to earn a living or manage your household for an extended period. Critical illness

Merritt gives generously By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

Local organizers of the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Campaign are thanking community members for their generous donations last year. “Our generous little town sent off 363 giftfilled shoe boxes to poor children and youth living in countries in Central and South America,” said Sue Peachey, Merritt co-ordinator. These numbers are slightly lower than the previous year when Merritt managed to contribute a total of 403 boxes, however, numbers were up in the province as a whole from 97,434 in 2010 to 102,247 in 2011. These numbers put B.C. as the third largest contributor in Canada followed by Alberta and Ontario.

The Canada-wide total reached 672,274, while the global total was tallied at 8.6 million shoe boxes sent to children in impoverished and wartorn countries, reported Peachey. “Merritt did great for a small town,” she said. “I did have 440 boxes distributed, so if anyone has any boxes that they didn’t use, please do not throw them out as we can use them for the upcoming season, which will start again in October.” Peachey said each box costs Samaritan’s Purse money to make, so empties should be dropped off at the Evangelical Free Church by Rotary Park on Monday to Thursday between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who weren’t able to fill a shoe box can still make a donation at www.samaritanspurse.ca.

insurance provides a lump-sum of money that can be used to pay for the replacement of valuable services and/or the costs of medical care. Long term care insurance pays the costs of medical and

home care including respite care that allows a caregiver to take a break. It protects your family’s existing financial assets and helps ensure a surviving spouse or children will receive an undepleted estate.

Today’s families and extended families come in many shapes and sizes and each member plays many important roles with a high emotional and life value that can and should be protected by insurance. Your pro-

fessional advisor can help you make the right insurance choices for your family. This column, written and published by Investors Group Financial Services Inc., and Investors Group Securities Inc. presents general information

National magazine features Country Run

Friends & Neighbours

By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

Only two years after its inaugural event, the Merritt County Run has been featured in Canadian Running Magazine, and race director Mary Jorgensen is getting inquiries from as far away as Calgary. As of last week, Jorgensen reported over 200 individual registrations, more than the number of runners who competed last year. “This is going to be our best year so far — I know it,” said Jorgensen. “We’re moving forward.” Exactly 18 days remain until this year’s race on June 10, which will feature a challenging half marathon course (21 kilometres) for the first time. Organizers expect this option, in addition to the 5K and 10K courses, will draw more people from out of town to participate in race. “Coming into Merritt for a half marathon makes it more worth a runner’s while,” said Jorgensen. Another new feature of this year’s run is the option to register as a team. Nine teams, ranging from seven to 34 runners, have registered for the race. “Allowing team registration is the best thing we did this year — it brings out more community involvement,” said Jorgensen. “Running with a team, it becomes a fun event, and individual team members could still run any distance they wanted.” As always, all proceeds from the Merritt Country Run will go towards the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program, which helps children in the community participate in organized sports. And, for the first time, the

local Canadian Tire has offered to match all the proceeds from the race. While the race is organized to suit runners of all skill levels, with a flat 5K race, a 10K race and the challenging 21K course, Jorgensen said the event will be fun for spectators as well. On race day, John Allison will be providing the music and there will be various food vendors at Voght Park including Starbucks and

M&M Meats. Local massage therapists Tim Kroeker and Jamara Joyal will also be offering $10 massages with half of the proceeds going to Jumpstart. Because she is organizing the event, Jorgensen won’t be running herself, but it is a sport she is passionate about. “We were born with the ability to run — if I were an eagle, I would love to fly,” she said. “Running gives me quality alone time but it also gives me the chance to work towards a goal.” People still interested in registering for the race should visit www.merrittcountryrun. ca. Those interested in volunteering can contact Charlotte Hepner at 315-2506.

Jumpstart Day this Saturday at Canadian Tire By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

Merritt Canadian Tire customers will have the opportunity to help local children participate in organized sports and recreation, by making a donation during Saturday’s Jumpstart Day festivities. The day-long fundraising event will celebrate the culmination of the Jumpstart program’s One Million Red Balls campaign, which encourages customers to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball — a

symbol for child’s play. Canadian Tire representatives hope the red balls will give customers a tangible reminder of their contribution to helping children get involved in sports and recreation. Jumpstart, which aims to help families that cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sports and recreation, has helped 439,383 children across Canada since 2005. To date, 468 children in Merritt have been able to participate in sports through community donations.

This Saturday marks the fourth annual Jumpstart Day hosted by Canadian Tire stores across Canada. Merritt’s local celebrations will include a GoGreen car wash, a balloon pop and other table top games, which will be by donation. All money raised locally will stay in the community. Canadian Tire will also be matching the proceeds from the Merritt Country Run on June 10, which is raising money for the Jumpstart Charity. The Merritt Canadian Tire is located at 2761 Forksdale Ave.

As Courthouse Art Gallery Director/Curator Kathi DahlquistGray prepared the current exhibit Whet Your Palette, she contemplated whether to show her work at the show. After all, Merritt’s very own gallery director has a piece displayed at the Chicago Museum of Fine Art. She was also a key artist in the “We Are the World” kiosk that travelled the globe for African famine relief and she illustrated the original angioplasty, which are inserts in documents that show doctors how to complete an angioplasty, she explained. Not to mention, she drew the lab books for the Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine while in art school to help her pay for tuition. Dahlquist-Gray also created Barbara Streisand’s promotional material for a campaign, and she helped promote John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the “Milk and Honey” tour. “I still have the tour jacket from them,” she recalled. However, the Nicola Valley is

MA

full of skilled artists, DahlquistGray explained, and the Whet Your Palette exhibit will feature the work of Fame Mackney, Coquihalla Middle School’s art teacher. More on that is to come. But first, let’s take a closer look at the journey on which DahlquistGray ventured to arrive at the Courthouse Art Gallery. It was from age three that she started her art, before working for celebrities and having her work displayed in major exhibits. “My first sketchbook was completed when I was three,” she said. “I sold my first piece, ‘Eggs and Ham,’ when I was eight.” That cubist piece is the work on display in Chicago. Dahlquist-Gray was brought up in the southwest United States, in New Mexico and southern California, before moving to Merritt. She attended art school in Boston and studied with famous artist Georgia O’Keefe. It was there she owned an advertising agency that focused on high-tech medical advertising and packaging.

She then moved back to the west after her father became sick. “I sold my company in ‘89, closed it out in ‘91, but I moved to Tacoma [Wash.] in ‘90,” she explained. “Then I moved up to Merritt when I met Mary. She came here to handle her father’s affairs when he was dying in 2003.” The art culture in Merritt was slow at first, but it is “waking up.” She said the local art community is now pushing for more involvement. “I was surprised that Merritt wasn’t more into the arts, because there are several well-known artists living here.” Since arriving, she has helped build the arts community and she started the local bus system. At the gallery, Dahlquist-Gray

said she chooses what type of art to display based on whether it has been shown at the gallery before. But she also receives a lot of input from the community about which of the Nicola Valley’s vibrant community of artists should be featured. Mackney, the featured artist at Whet Your Palette, focuses on paintings of the metaphysical arts, nature and love between people. “She had some exciting new pieces, so I asked her to show,” Dahlquist-Gray said. The exhibit can be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and on Friday and Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. The show, which opened on May 11, ends on June 9. The Courthouse Art Gallery is located at 1840 Nicola Ave. Dahlquist-Gray is available to give lessons to those who call the gallery at 250-378-6515.

The role of salt: Part 2 NARAYAN MITRA You Gotta Have FAITH In Mathew 5:13, Jesus said something very powerful that is sometimes lost in familiarity: “You are the salt of the earth.” Christians have been hearing that since they were children, but I am not sure we really take it seriously. An escapism mentality. This type of mentality says, “Jesus is going to come back before we can change things anyway. So let’s just let things get worse, so He can return quickly.” In other words, this teaching of basic dispensationalism would have the physical world operate on its own and get all the salt together and put it in a saltshaker. Then, as soon as the world rots, Jesus will take the ‘salt’ out of here. That doesn’t make a great deal of sense, does it?

The church has bought a lie when it bought into this escapism mentality that says we are to sit back in our own little conclaves and let the world go to hell. This is not what God sent His Son to do or put the church here to do. This mentality has produced a generation that does not know how to raise kids, handle money, or affect society. They just wait for Jesus to come back. It hasn’t been a very smart way to look at things. Overcoming the obstacles We can never become the salt of the earth until we overcome the obstacles and become true disciples. And we must help each other reach that goal. To truly disciple you, I must first help you hear God. I cannot give you the ability to hear God, that’s something God has already done. He said, “My sheep hear my voice.” If you are a Christian, you can hear Him. There may be some obstacles and I may be able to coach you in different ways to help you hear Him.

After we learn to hear God, we can find out what to do on our own. We are not supposed to go to church to hear some pastor tell us what God said for us to do. We’re supposed to hear God for ourselves. The church is to help one another hear God. Individually and corporately, we need to renounce the victimization mentality forever. We are not here to survive, we are here to preserve. Jesus said to occupy till He returns. Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. Get involved where you are. Sometimes we get these big grandiose ideas. But if we just start where we are and talk to one person, it won`t stop there. That`s the Kingdom principle. God has already dropped a blueprint in our heart. What rotting piece of society is bothering you? Get involved right there and become the salt of the earth. Narayan Mitra is pastor of the Merritt Baptist Church and Chaplain at TRU.

If you are unfortunate enough to experience an acute bout of low back pain, you should see your chiropractor immediately. The sooner a diagnosis is made and treatment commences, the faster you will recover. Once treatment has begun, there will inevitably be a period of time that your body will require to heal itself. There is no magical drug that can do this for you. While the symptoms should gradually lessen over a period of days, you should be careful not to further aggravate your condition. To avoid this, keep the following items in mind: Lifting Objects • Try to avoid lifting objects, if possible. • If you must lift objects, do not try to lift objects that are awkward or are heavier than 30 pounds. • Before you lift a heavy object, make sure you have firm footing. • To pick up an object that is lower than the level of your waist, keep your back straight and bend at your knees and hips. Do not bend forward at the waist with your knees straight. • Stand with a wide stance close to the object you are trying to pick up

and keep your feet firm on the ground. Tighten your stomach and lift the object using your leg muscles. Straighten your knees in a steady motion. Don’t jerk the object up to your body. • Stand completely upright without twisting. Always move your feet forward when lifting an object. • If you are lifting an object from a table, slide it to the edge of the table so that you can hold it close to your body. Bend your knees so that you are close to the object. Use your legs to lift the object and come to a standing position. • Avoid lifting heavy objects above waist level. • Hold packages close to your body with your arms bent. Keep your

stomach muscles tight. Take small steps and go slowly. • To lower the object, place your feet as you did to lift, tighten stomach muscles and bend your hips and knees. Reaching Overhead • Use a footstool or chair to bring yourself up to the level of what you are reaching. • Get your body as close as possible to the object you need. • Make sure you have a good idea of how heavy the object is you are going to lift. • Use two hands to lift. Sleeping and Lying Down • Select a firm mattress

and box spring set that does not sag. If necessary, place a board under your mattress. You can also place the mattress on the floor temporarily if necessary. • If you’ve always slept on a soft surface, it may be more painful to change to a hard surface. Try to do what’s most comfortable for you. • Use a back support (lumbar support) at night to make you more comfortable. A rolled sheet or towel tied around your waist may be helpful. • Try to sleep in a position that helps you maintain the curve in your back (such as on your back with a lumbar roll or on your side with your knees slightly bent). Do not sleep on your side with your knees drawn

up to your chest. • When standing up from the lying position, turn on your side, draw up both knees and swing your legs on the side of the bed. Sit up by pushing yourself up with your hands. Avoid bending forward at your waist. Other Helpful Tips • Avoid activities that require bending forward at the waist or stooping. • When coughing or sneezing, try to stand up, bend slightly backwards to increase the curve in your spine when you cough or sneeze. Logan Lake is a busy place BARRIE OGDEN BARRIE’S BANTER On Friday, May 25, the students who assisted at the Logan Lake Business Association’s Home Show will be treated to a Volunteer Appreciation Lunch in recognition of their hard work and enthusiasm. The Business Association’s executive can’t say enough good things about these young people who are such great role models for other students. Last week I told you to mark your calendars because there’s so much happening this weekend. But, I gave you the wrong times for the TNRD’s Household/ Hazardous Waste Roundup May 26 at the Rec Centre parking lot. Fortunately, you’ll have even more time

to gather the materials lurking in your house or garage because this free event runs from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Please, everyone, this is a unique opportunity to get rid of a host of products such as anti-freeze, paint thinners, oil and oil filters, furnace filters, light bulbs, fertilizers and electronic waste including: computers, monitors, stereo equipment, telephones and answering machines. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by and please don’t let me hear you say on Monday that you didn’t know this event was happening. Also, don’t forget to come out on Saturday at 9 a.m. to support and cheer on everyone participating in the W.H.Y.’s Walk for a Reason. It’s hoped that the money raised will be sufficient to enable the W.H.Y. to both buy new equipment and repair the old. Funds are drastically needed to be able to provide ongoing training for both staff and volun-

REAL ESTATE MADE SIMPLE

Solar Lighting For Your Yard One of the simplest, most economical and also ecofriendly ways to provide lighting in your yard is to use solar lights. There are a wide variety of solar lighting options on the market that can help you to create the right ambience. LIGHTING YOUR YARD AND PATIO The most commonly used solar yard lights are the classic stake lights. They can be placed at the interval of your choice, and are great for lining Áower beds, placing around the patio, or illuminating the path up to your house. These versatile lights are perfect for just about any situation. They give a very classic look that works in both the front and back yard and will Àt in with most landscaping or architecture. To add mood lighting to your patio, solar powered Tiki torches are a great choice. Unlike traditional torches, there is no risk of Àre and no messy oil. Many even Áicker just like a candle to create the same ambience that you would expect from traditional Tiki torches. LIGHTING YOUR DRIVEWAY Another option you might want to consider is driveway solar lights. These Áat lights are designed to light the edges of the driveway to make parking easier at night. Especially for long or curving driveways, these are a great way to illuminate the way at night. There are two main types of driveway lights; the Àrst type sits on top of the surface, while the second type is actually embedded in the driveway surface, leaving it level. Either type illuminates very well. Solar lights give your home a warm glow at night and require virtually no maintenance. Install them, let the sun do the work, and then enjoy them when the sun goes down!

Taekwon-Do club shines at Western Canadians

GETTIN’ THEIR KICKS Coquihalla Taekwon-Do School instructor Ed Nedokus ((top left) with the four students that he took to the Western Canadian Championships in Coquitlam on May 12. They are (from left to right) Jade Duncan, 9, Savannah Joe , 15, Brianne Duncan, 13, and Lennon Antoine, 12. Phillip Woolgar/Herald

Four members of the Coquihalla Taekwon-Do School in Merritt did extremely well at the 2012 Western Canadian Championships, held on May 12 in Vancouver. Savannah Joe, Lennon Antoine and Brianne and Jade Duncan, along with their instructor, Ed Nedokus, joined close to 300 other competitors from 26 clubs and schools at the Pinetree Community Centre in Coquitlam. The youngest Merritt

competitor, nine-year-old Jade Duncan, won silver in her green belt sparring event and a great effort commendation in her girls 7-9 patterns class. Jade’s sister Brianne, 13, and also a green belt, also won a silver medal in sparring as well as a bronze in patterns. The Coquihalla School’s third green belt competitor, 12-year-old Lennon, won his silver medal in patterns, and added a bronze in sparring.

Savannah, 15, won a silver in girls’ 14-16 red belt sparring and a bronze in patterns. The Coquihalla Taekwon-Do School operates from September to June each year, with classes in Merritt on Mondays and Thursdays, and in Lower Nicola on Tuesdays. For more information, contact Ed at 3782186.

Exciting midget lacrosse action this weekend Fast-paced midget lacrosse competition takes centre stage this weekend with the 4th annual Thunder in the Valley tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Shulus arena. A total of eight teams from around B.C. will be taking part in the event. In addition to the host Nicola Valley Thunder, they include the North Okanagan Legends and Kamloops Jr. Rattlers from the Interior, along with Coquitlam, Surrey, Chilliwack and two teams from Ridge Meadows. The tournament begins on Friday at 3:30

pm and runs through until the conclusion of the gold-medal game at 3:30 pm on Sunday. There will be a skills competition on Saturday from 2 - 3 pm. The local Thunder midgets are coached by Q101.1 radio personality Graham Turnbull, a former goaltender in the ThompsonOkanagan Junior B league. Assistant coach is Will Clinging. The Thunder are in tough this weekend with quite a young lineup and a rather short bench. They will need to rely on strong team defense and a lot of hustle and discipline.

SPORTS MERRITT YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 5 GRADE 2/3

Youth soccer resumes this Saturday

After a one-week hiatus on the May long weekend, the second half of the Merritt Youth Soccer Association’s 2012 schedule kicks off this Saturday with a full slate of games at Diamond Vale Elementary School and at Coquihalla Middle School. In the grade 2/3 division, the Blue Bombers remain undefeated with a perfect 5-0-0 record and a maximum 15 points. Close behind are the White Vipers with 12 points courtesy of a 4-1-0 record. In all three other MYSA divisions, the leading team also sports a 4-1-0 record. In the grade 4/5 division, the L.A. Galaxy hold a three-point lead over the Whitecaps, while in the grade 6/7 division, it’s the Impact with a two-point edge over another Whitecaps team. Finally, in the grade 8+ division, the Sounders are clinging to a two-point lead over Dynamo. The two sides clash this weekend. All MYSA players are reminded that picture day for the 4/5, 6/7 and 8+ divisions is this Saturday at CMS, while the K/1 and 2/3 divisions are slated for June 2 at Diamond Vale School.

SPORTS

Minor baseball still a big hit The numbers may not be what they once were when minor baseball was in its heyday in the 1960s and 70s, but the local ball scene continues to carry on, thanks to a small but dedicated group of volunteers. According to MMBA president Marlene Stewart there are a total of nine youth teams in the Nicola Valley this year.

“We have three T-ball teams and three mighty mite teams,” said Stewart. “They practise and play games on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Merritt Secondary School.” Stewart coaches a peewee girls’ team while Cliff Colter heads up a peewee boys’ program. The boys have set their sights on attending Provincials this year.

Bob Simpson and Don Chenier are coaching a single bantam girls’ team that has represented Merritt at the Provincials for the past three seasons. The bantam girls, who were supposed to have played Kamloops last week but were rained out, are scheduled to attend a tournament in Vernon on the June 2-3 weekend.

FIELDS OF DREAMS There was lots of minor baseball happening at the MSS diamonds on Tuesday night of this week. (Left) Tyrese Basil, 5, makes solid contact with the T-ball. (Top right) Coach Cathy Mortimer instructs sevenyear-old Jayden Weigel on some of the finer points of backcatching. (Near right) Tyson Jarvis, 7, keeps his eye on the ball. (Far right) Cayden Bergstrom, 4, and Mack Klassen, 7, share first base. Ian Webster/Herald

Sloan to compete once again in Kamloops Merritt professional golfer Roger Sloan, 25, will be playing ‘close to home’ again his year. The second-year Canadian Professional Golf Tour member will be taking part in the Home Hardware Pro Am at the Sun Rivers Golf Course in Kamloops from June 13-15. Last summer, Sloan won the inaugural CPGT Western Championship at the Rivershore Golf Links outside Kamloops. The event has been dropped this

year from the Canadian Tour schedule due to a lack of sponsors. This year’s Canadian Tour opens in Victoria with the Times-Colonist Island Savings Open from June 7-10. In 2011, Sloan shot a course-record final round 61 to finish in a tie for fourth overall at this event. Merritt’s Roger Sloan holds the trophy after winning last year’s Western Open at the Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops. Kamloops This Week

MERRITT FUNERAL CHAPEL

Help Wanted

He was predeceased by Helen, his loving wife of 45 years. He will be sadly missed by his family Barb (Paul) Dodding, Russell (Cathy) Reid, and Cheryl Ozero; his grandchildren Jennifer (Eric) Clarke, Shawn Reid, Paula Dodding (Herbie Scherrer), Blaine Alexandre, Dayna (Reeve) Harrison, Vannessa (Ray) Cameron and Jason Reid; and his 15 great grandchildren; and many loved family and friends across Canada. He was born in Bancroft, Ontario, one of 14 children. He started working at a very young age as a logger and then trucking and Ă€nally as a miner. In 1951 he married his loving wife Helen and together they raised 3 children. In 1965 he moved his family to Lower Nicola where he worked at Craigmont Mine until its closure and then ventured onto Lornex Mine. He spent many hours hunting, Ă€shing and camping. Russ & Helen loved to travel with their trailer wherever the road would take them, hence the C-B handle “Tumbleweedâ€?. By request, there will be no service

Always loved and remembered! A heart of gold stopped beating Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. The leaves and flowers may wither The golden sun may set. But the hearts that loved so dearly Are the ones who won’t forget.
