Ramada Hotel, Ricky’s now open BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

There were smiles all around when the ribbon was cut at the official opening of Ricky’s All Day Grill on Thursday evening. The restaurant, part of the new Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre complex, is expected to provide a significant boost to Creston Valley tourism. “This is a great day for Creston and our valley,” Creston Mayor Ron Toyota said on Thursday from a mayors’ caucus in Pentiction. “I wish I could be there to congratulate the people at AB-BC Recreation and Resources for having the confidence to invest in our community.” The Thursday night opening culminated two days of practice for restaurant employees, who served complimentary meals to invited guests in a trial run for the Creston Valley Blossom Festival weekend opening. Ricky’s, a national restaurant chain, holds 128 guests in the restaurant, 30 in the soon-to-open lounge and also offers outdoor dining on two patios, which will open in mid-June. See HOTEL, page 5

Thomas named citizen of the year BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Creston Golf Club. Creston Valley Community Radio. Relay for Life. Creston and District Community Complex referendum. Just mention any of those, and one name quickly comes to mind: Phil Thomas. And while he may have been named Creston’s 2012 citizen of the year, Thomas

is quick to place the credit directly where it’s due — with his wife, Barb. “She holds the fort while I go out and do my thing,” said Thomas. “I never would have been anything close to it without her.” She, too, has been an active volunteer in the 42 years that couple has been together, “from Brownie leader when Cathy (their daughter) was young to being queen of the library volunteers after she retired as chief librarian.” They came to Canada from the U.K.

Touring pianist filming concerts BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Lovers of piano music who attend a June 3 concert will enjoy more than just a concert — they will also have a chance to be part of a film, On the Shore of Dreams, which will star Nelson concert pianist-filmmaker, Dharel Verville. He and director Gary Ramsbottom are travelling throughout the region, capturing footage for a sequence showing several concerts, all performed by a character with a serious multiple personality disorder. Verville will show film clips as part of the performance, and play in character to allow the audience to react appropriately. “They certainly get impacted by some of emotional message,” Verville said. “They get introduced to the whole thing and get a little taste.” Originally from Edmonton, the 55-year-old, whose mother taught piano, has been playing piano since he was a child, and he began studying with a university professor when he was 15. In the concert, Verville will perform Franz Liszt's monumental piano transcription of Beethoven's fifth symphony, and the first and second movements of his ninth symphony, which he said is considered one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. And he will take his performance a step further, by extemporizing during the concert. “When you extemporize, you start just playing off the top. You start playing something in the moment. Beethoven was considered one of greatest. He didn’t even necessarily like playing his own compositions, because he liked playing in the moment.” To prepare for the role, he studied Beethoven extensively, trained his shoulders and arms, and studied Jungian psychology and more — the film delves into civil disobedience, political corruption, conspiracy theories and Judeo-Christian myths. The process of creating On the Shore of Dreams is nothing new to Verville, who has performed as actor and pianist in five multimedia plays. His most recent accomplishment is the feature documentary film, The Naked Queen. “Production is really the fun part,” he said. “You’re actively engaged in executing the creative stream that’s going on.” The concert runs at 2:30 p.m. at Prince Charles Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, available at the door and Black Bear Books.

Artists turn the old into the new Who: Bart and Alison Bjorkman What: Old stuff made into something new and useful Where: Their Erickson home, Northwest Boulevard studio and online When: For the last couple of years Why: Because old is not the same as useless BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Alison Bjorkman came to Creston as an established, accomplished potter. Her husband, Bart, has never thought of himself as an artist, or even having artistic talent. But the two have found a perfect way to match their skills and creativity by “repurposing” old items and creating unique home decor items.

Looking around the Bjorkman residence in Erickson, a surprising number of Puffin Design creations come into focus. A movie tripod floodlight standing in the corner is pretty much unchanged, except for new wiring that allows it to accept a fluorescent light bulb and not emit a jillion degrees of heat. A coffee table features a lovely concrete (more about that later) top that rests on a railway depot baggage cart, complete with heavy steel wheels. An old wooden sugar mold holds coloured glass tumblers, each housing a votive candle. Old steel funnels rewired with retro cloth electrical cord to accommodate light sockets can be raised and lowered by tugging on the cord, which runs through well-worn wooden pulleys or hollow steel brackets. Each of the one-of-a-kind items is the result of creative shopping (they haunt junk shops whenever they travel), creative — very creative — minds and skilled hands. “We have this unique combination of skills,” Bart says, which might be the understatement of all time. The one-time armed forces specialist is a commercial and salvage diver, a search and rescue tracker and trainer, the author of a post-911 manual on weapons that can elude traditional security screening and a guy who several years ago became obsessed with making concrete sinks and table- and countertops. Alison is a rare artist who has a diploma in business administration and who for many years operated Black Bear Books, the popular book, music and coffee hangout on Canyon Street. Bart points to a large bowl, explaining that Alison recently made it. Nothing unusual there, until he adds that she used concrete.

“We had just finished a concrete counter and there was leftover material. ‘Why don’t you make a bowl?’ I asked her. ‘You’re a potter.’ ” Alison set to work and her wide-eyed husband watched in amazement. “You shouldn’t be able to make concrete into a bowl that’s a quarter-inch thick, but she did,” he laughs. “Bart tries not to tell me what I can and can’t do in concrete,” she explains. “I haven’t taken all the courses he has, so I just go ahead and start into something.” With their Puffin Design business, the primary goal is to become a supplier to designers all over the continent. “These people are always looking for unique items that they can design a room around,” Bart says. “They are amazing people to work with.”

Alison Bjorkman of Puffin Design.

To fulfill the needs demanded by a highend market, Puffin Design utilizes the talents of others, too. The Bjorkmans have partnered with First Nations carver Michael Price, master welder and blacksmith Andrew Bibby and Kris Balde at Kriskraft Industries to create special bases for tabletops and other pieces that need a “special something” to complete a project. “Each partner adds their own special twist to a piece,” Bart says. Because they operate Legend Rock, which makes all the concrete pieces, and Puffin Design, which is intended as the marketing arm for everything they create, Alison says things sometimes get complicated. “It’s hard to resist adding concrete to everything we make,” she laughs. That might be something that would suit Bart quite nicely, but he admits their differences in skills and personality are a distinct advantage. “We each approach things in a different way,” he says. “She sees an old item and says, ‘Well we could do this with that,’ and explains what ‘this’ might be. I tend to design things on paper.” “He looks for parts to make his design

and I look for things that we can make into something else,” Alison elaborates. Sourcing for their unique pieces has become an enjoyable part of the business. “We have junk store owners that are actually looking for things that we might be able to use,” Bart says. “I went to one recently and the owner had a whole collection of stuff piled together for us to check out. We bought almost everything.” If Bart has to be held back from putting concrete into everything they make, Alison has her own weakness. “I have a thing for boxes on wheels,” she laughs. “I love being able to move things around easily.” Alison has recently taken up upholstery, another skill that allows her to add beauty and utility to Puffin Design creations. And the artist in her makes the hunt for high quality fabrics another thrill. “I don’t want to play with plain fabric — I want to use great fabrics to make great pieces.” She points to an old side chair that she cleaned up — without refinishing — then upholstered with a dazzlingly, rich peacock fabric. Bart flips up the lid of a repurposed Bell and Howell camera box — now on wheels, of course — and reveals a matching fabric lining. It’s one the unexpected, quirky details that sets their work apart, raising it to an entirely new, and often unexpected, level. Using old, sometimes battered, items also means using a great deal of discretion. “I just bought a new sandblaster and now I’m tempted to sandblast everything in sight,” he laughs. “But you can’t replace a hundred-year-old patina, so you have to think ahead about how something might look in the end.” The pair takes delight in showing off their new acquisitions. Alison pulls out a pair of big old fishing reels that she envisions becoming lamp parts. In his Alice Siding workshop, Bart points out two old barbershop chairs. “I don’t know what they are going to be, but they are just so cool!” Like the showroom quality sinks and countertops that Bart fashions from Fiberglas-strengthened concrete, the Bjorkmans insist they don’t want to just make things that are decorative. “If we have one similarity in our approaches, it that whatever we make has to be functional,” Alison says. “We don’t do much that is just to be looked at.” Using old items resonates with the repurposers. “The whole process is very humbling to me,” Alison says. “It’s like there is a three-generation story. These items were used by our grandparents’ generation, then maybe they went outside to become things we played with. Now I’m seeing that same stuff in antique stores.” “Each piece has it’s own history,” Bart adds. “It’s nice to become part of that story.” For more information, visit Puffin Design at puffindesign.ca or phone 250-402-9257. Some Puffin Design creations are displayed at Creative Fix on 10th Avenue North. The Legend Rock studio and showroom is at Bay 6, 1204 Northwest Blvd. or phone 250-428-5076.

Blossom Fest ‘surprisingly quiet’ for RCMP BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

“Surprisingly quiet” is how Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan describes the Creston Valley Blossom Festival weekend. “I had extra staff on because of all the events going on,” he said. “But we didn’t even get a single call about Kootenanny, which was to be held at Holbrook Falls on Highway 3A. I know they didn’t have the necessary permits from the RDCK in place on Saturday morning, but I really couldn’t say whether it actually happened.” Of greater concern, Gollan said, was a string of five break and entries to businesses last week. However, he reported that the suspect has been arrested in Cranbrook. Break and entries were reported last week at Dairy Queen, A Break in Time Caffé, 7-Eleven, Mane and Nails, and ABC Country Restaurant.

Police Beat RCMP responded to 80 calls for service from May 14-20, Gollan said. May 14 •Two 911 calls were made from a Seventh Avenue North residence, where a male was refusing to leave a house party. He was gone when police arrived. “Obviously this is not the purpose of the 911 service, which should only be used for genuine emergencies,” Gollan said. •A local resident reported the possible fraudulent access to a bank account. The bank is work-

Simon Lazarchuk wins gentlemen’s challenge BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The competition was fierce, but Simon Lazarchuk walked away the winner of the 50-Plus Gentlemen’s Challenge sponsored by Creston’s GoGo Grannies yesterday afternoon. “I love competition, “ he said. “I think it’s fun to just go out there. And I love the roar of the crowd.” And roar they did, particularly after seeing his talent, an Eastern European folk dance. “I come from folk dancing roots, Ukrainian and Russian folk dancers,” he said. “And I do have Gypsy blood in me. It was a good opportunity to live the fantasy.”

The challenge was a followup to last year’s 70-Plus Queen Pageant, also sponsored by the GoGo Grannies, which donates the proceeds to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which helps African grandmothers raising children orphaned by AIDS. Mary Underhill hosted the event, with music by Monte Anderson, and a luncheon and goodies by the Grannies. The stage and sound equipment were donated by House of Rock, which used the room for events the previous night and last night. Iain Bell, Poul Christensen, Ron Hurry, Doug Thompson and Chuck Truscott joined Lazarchuk in the competition. Each was introduced by Underhill, and paraded down the runway dressed

in what they wanted to be when they grew up, which included Kenya native Bell as a game ranger, Truscott as a farmer, Copenhagen-born Christensen as a mariachi band member, Lazarchuk as a Gypsy dancer and Thompson in his clan’s tartan. Hurry wanted to be tall when he grew up — which didn’t happen — so he wore an apron decorated with pins of the organizations he’s volunteered with. The talent portion followed, with Bell telling a joke, Christensen playing Amazing Grace on the trumpet, Hurry telling a touching story of his goldsmithing business, Lazarchuk dancing, Thompson telling a story and joke, and Truscott telling stories proving he could still remember the 1940s and 1950s.

Impromptu questions followed, with contestants asked random questions, from, “If you were a food, what would you be?” to “If you succeed at failure, have you succeeded or failed?” Judges Martin Stanley, Donna McCready and Gary Deatherage decided quickly that Lazarchuk was the winner, with Hurry taking second place and Thompson earning third. Last year’s queen, Dolly Kaetler, knighted the winners.

From page 1 Guests at the opening were also offered a sneak preview of the Ramada Hotel rooms, but hotel and restaurant general manager Cary Hobbs admitted she was surprised that 20 rooms were already booked for that night. “We haven’t done any advertising whatsoever,” she said on Friday. “But we’ve been very pleased to accommodate people who want to stay.” The hotel features 71 rooms, with conference facilities for up to 100 guests and a fitness centre to add an extra level of service. “It seems that the local population is very pleased with what they have seen, judging by their comments,” Hobbs said. The official ribbon cutting at Ricky’s All Day Grill was conducted by acting mayor Judy Gadicke, Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director and chair John Kettle and Area C director Larry Binks. Hobbs also presented cheques in the amount of $750 to representatives of the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society (PAWS) and the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS). The money was collected from restaurant guests in lieu of tips or meal charges, and was topped up by AB-BC Recreation and Resources. A grand opening for the Ramada Hotel is expected to be scheduled for July, Hobbs said.

Shared services are important

Last week, I promised to offer some opinions on why co-operation among the Town of Creston and local Regional District of Central Kootenay directors benefits the entire Creston Valley. The town and RDCK have numerous shared services. Among them are water treatment and distribution, fire protection (Creston Fire Rescue covers Erickson residents, under contract, and all fire departments participate in a mutual aid program to help each other when necessary), road rescue (often, but not accurately, referred to as Jaws of Life), Creston and District Public Library, Creston Museum, Creston and District Community Complex, economic development (which includes the physician recruitment program) and the town’s cemetery in Erickson. These are the ones that come to the top of my head and there are probably others. The services are shared in different ways — some are funded by a tax assessment to property and others are funded by “contributions from defined areas, which mean they don’t come directly out of a specifically defined property tax (dollars might come, for instance, from gas tax proceeds to each area). Economic development, at least the regional district portion, and which includes physician recruitment is an example. Some of these shared services appear to have no controversy attached to them, like the library, museum and community complex. Others have become particular bones of contention. Last week I talked about the desire expressed by Area B director John Kettle to create a fire depart-

ment that would cover Erickson, Arrow Creek, Lakeview and Kitchener. So what might things look like if this happens? Well, Creston Fire Rescue would shrink,

I also mentioned last week that the four local chiefs had presented a plan to meld fire protection into a single service last year. That plan was dismissed out of hand by the RDCK fire chief and there has been no indication since that the RDCK stance is about to change. While the water issue is dramatically different, there are similarities. In addition to the Arrow Creek system, Creston Valley residents get their water from a number Lorne Eckersley of small systems and all are under increasing pressures because its responsibilities would be as provincial and health regulations reduced. Our economy may suffer similar fate

To the Editor: (Re: This is the Life: “Joining forces not good for all”, May 16 Advance, page 6) I wish to commend Lorne Eckersley on his recent column regarding the financial woes in Spain and Greece. His analysis is insightful, clear and, for an employee of the popular press, courageous. I would challenge you to find the described problems in the European Common Market so clearly elucidated in the Vancouver Sun or the Toronto Sun, whose reporters seem to rarely get beyond printing the press releases of the corporate elite or their cohorts among the elected governments. The eulogization of austerity, interpreted as the elimination of the few remaining government services, barring the military, as a solution to the self-inflicted economic woes rampant in the global economy should be transparent to all except the most naive and uninformed. That reducing employment and concomitantly purchasing power is going to improve the economy is ridiculous in the extreme. It also follows that the endless pursuit of free trade by our own govern-

ment is playing into the same hands as those being dealt out in the ECM presently. Is it not time to recognize that our country should recognize we still have a few resources left that could be managed by our own country and used to provide some benefit to our own populace, rather than pipelining them out of the country and into the pockets of the one per cent? came to the rescue, and a volunteer even took me downstairs and helped me look for one. There are so many low-income families in this Valley, in similar situations (well, maybe not with a six foot nine inch son), but with a growing family, where would they be without Gleaners? Where would our drama groups be without Gleaners? I love the atmosphere there, and the wonderful, friendly volunteers. Please do not change anything. Gleaners models generosity, sharing, community and care. Please no two-tier systems, and no condemning anyone that maybe someone thinks does not need to use Gleaners. We don’t know people’s personal life circumstances. Thank you to the people that volunteer and keep Gleaners alive and well. Rhonda Barter Creston

Gleaners good for all in valley

To the Editor: Creston’s Gleaners is just fine thanks. It is a simple operation: Generous people donate goods to Gleaners and the goods are resold to the public (that means all of us). Gleaners, inCLOSED turn, takes cash and gives it to local charities so they can assist SATURDAY, the less fortunate. In addition Gleaners provides food to members of the comMAY 19 munity in need. Gleaners is aEnjoy charity, not a governBlossom Festival! ment welfare agency. Leave it alone and it will continue doing what it has done for many years: Help the less fortunate in our community. Don Tyndall Creston

To the Editor: There has been a bit of a flurry of letters about Gleaners. I love Gleaners! Personally, I think Gleaners is one of the best things this valley has going for it. I have probably given to Gleaners more than I have purchased, but it is a close call. Having always been on a rather low income, and being a good frugal Scot, it was such a blessing to have Gleaners around to cope with my children’s ever-increasing height. With my son coming in just under six feet nine inches, there was no suit jacket to be found for prom and grad (not that I could really afford one anyway). Gleaners

Lojong slogan 42: Whichever of the two occurs, be patient

What happens to your spiritual practice when you are extremely happy? And what happens to your spiritual practice when things are going horribly, and you are extremely unhappy? Do you hold your practice at the centre of your life, or do you let your happiness or misery dominate your reality? That is what this slogan is about. It advises us to be patient under all conditions. It is hard to maintain a steady spiritual practice. In conditions of extreme happiness or misery, it is much easier to come up with excuses to avoid practice. At times of intense pain or pleasure, sadness or happiness, we allow the intensity and drama of the moment to take us over, and lose our bearings and motivation for diligent spiritual practice. On the one hand, if we are feeling joyful, we think we don’t need practice. We get caught up in pleasure and our wish to maintain it, so we focus on enjoying ourselves and we forget to work for the happiness of others. Or we may think that our spiritual training is complete, that we have “graduated”. Spiritual practice and the cultivation of lovingkindness are thrown out the window. The danger of “the good times” is that

Q

we might step away from a practice that can carry us all the way to death with a joy that depends on no conditions. On the other hand, if we are feeling miserable, we might think there is no

point to practice, that practice isn’t helping. We turn inward and think, “Why me?” We get caught up in whining and complaining. We forget that life inevitably brings both pleasure and pain. We are too miserable to make practice a part of daily life. We make the excuse that we don’t have good conditions for practice and need to wait for conditions to improve. So, once again, spiritual practice is ditched due to preoccupation with ourselves, in this case, with our misery. Instead of waiting for the “right conditions” the idea of this slogan is to engage spiritual practice steadily and consistent-

ly. In fact, every condition is a right condition to turn to our spiritual practice. This slogan recommends patience. Patience is not a form of passivity where we have no power over what life might throw at us. Patience is not an invitation to helplessness. Patience allows us to face whatever arises in our lives in a creative and beneficial way. It affords us courage and dignity under all conditions. In spiritual practice, we are training to transform ourselves into better people as a direct result of our experiences. When we practice patience, we are showing that we understand that whatever is happening in our lives, it is sure to change. This is the truth of transience. Today’s practice: Notice the waxing and waning of your inspiration for spiritual practice. What patterns do you see? What would be threatened if your practice were more steady and continuous? This column is a long series of short essays exploring the meaning of the Lojong Slogans. It is inspired by the work of Judy Lief. Your favourite places can be revisited

Many of you and others have started the season off with some hiking and others are planning on outings and hiking for later on. Well, if you run out of things to do or places to go out there,

have since lost count of the times I have revisited this place that is just a 10-minute walk from the cabin. A few days ago, I chanced another exploration of the meadow. Spring buttercups, mountain bluebells and yellow bell flowers were gone, replaced by a new set of dainties. On inspecting one spot, I discovered a rubber boa intertwined in some loose rock and sticks, apparently trying to absorbed some of the sun’s heat via the warm rocks on this cool but sunny day. Rubber boas, in a group of Ed McMackin snakes called constrictors, are seldom seen. In fact, I haven’t knowingly crossed one’s path anywhere in the past three years. Now, if I hadn’t have revisited the meadow I would, perhaps, have never become privy to one of the many well-kept secrets of this sunny slope. That kind of encounter keeps happening as I revisit spots of former times. You have probably heard me say before that, when at any specific place out there, it’s never a case, at least with me, of been there, done that. Each return to a place presents something different to be experienced and appreciated. A friend recently sent me a quote. It said something like, “It is better to climb one mountain 100 times than to climb 100 mountains one time each.” That can be taken different ways. But let’s say one could really get to know a specific walk, trail, pond, creekside, The caption with the photo in the marsh, swamp, lakeshore, grove, park, May 10 instalment of Out There field, hillside, valley or mountain by should have identified the above visiting it 100 times, and yet still not flower as Dutchman’s breeches, not exhaust its secrets. Warm rocks and sticks conceal a rubber boa.

Early in the morning, late in the day, early in the season and late in the season, revisit the historic Mount Thompson Pack Trail, the Balancing Rock Trail and upwards on Mount Creston, the Fern Forest Trail, the Lady Slipper Trail, the Mount Thompson Rim Trail, the Dewdney Trail and trails at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. And, just a little farther away are the Sanca Creek and Boulder Creek trails, and also trails just south in Idaho. And still farther afield, Haystack, Sphinx and Akokli mountains challenge one to a day hike or an overnighter. There are many areas to snoop while enjoying fresh air and exercise without having to pay big bucks or beat the pavement and breath exhaust fumes for several hours. So, having said that, I will say so long till autumn with an invitation to check out the Creston community hiking and the Boswell hiking schedules, both of which are available at the Creston and District Public Library. Remember to go out there equipped to be comfortable as well as safe. Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

Angels

By Tim Troughton The Cross Church

A young lady was returning home one evening when a stranger jumped out of the bushes and started to attack her. For some reason, she found herself calling out, “Lord of Hosts!” only to witness another young man come to her rescue and push her assailant back into the hedge. Taking her by the hand and saying, “Come on, Helen!” he proceeded to lead her safely home. She turned the key in her door lock and looked around to thank her rescuer only to see no one there. Stories like these, though unusual in substance, are far from uncommon. Most, of course, go unreported in the media as they are often dependent on just one witness and lack any material evidence. Angelic beings are described in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, their visitations associated with direct communion between God and mankind for a specific purpose. When they appear on Earth, they usually adopt an unremarkable human appearance, attired in simple human clothes. When described in heaven, their appearance is in their original glorified state. As the famous Christmas story tells, they also invade dreams and appear in visions. Three angels are named in scripture. One is the notorious Lucifer, who coveted God’s unique position and was expelled from heaven and thrown down to the Earth. The others, Michael and Gabriel, have special status, the former assigned with the task of protecting the nation of Israel, the latter as a messenger who appeared to the prophet Daniel and centuries later both to the priest Zechariah and later to a young unmarried Jewish girl, bringing her the news of the Messiah to be carried within her. Scripture offers tidbits about angels’ characteristics. They are both masculine and feminine but do not intermarry, some have multiple pairs of wings and faces with eyes positioned in strange places, and they exist in different ranks and have defined roles, are involved in both worship and warfare, harvest souls and protect scripture, speak a variety of languages, are too many to number and, like the stars, vary in glory. Though immortal, their origins and destinies remain shrouded in mystery. However, scripture is clear that while we are to both recognize and appreciate their presence and function, we are never to worship them, as they are created beings just like ourselves. See ANGELS, page 11

for all of their volunteer time and dedication to the students. The club also appreciates all of the many parents who spend sev-

eral of their nights and weekends driving to and from the Dojo so that their children have the opportunity to participate in this

Angels

The contrast with Jesus could not be more stark. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews goes to great pains to point out how much greater than angels Jesus is, quoting from no less than four Old Testament books from all three major divisions of the Hebrew scriptures to make his case. Like Paul to the Colossian church, he begins with the same startling assertion that before Jesus was born He was responsible for creating the universe, and goes on to explain that He is the one whom by His powerful word literally carries its existence along. The writer points out how Old Testament authors such as Moses exhorted all angels to worship Jesus, how the sons of Korah called him “God” and the suffering King David called him “Lord”. The writer reminds his readers of the incident when Jesus stumped the Pharisees who were itching to know who exactly He was, when He asked them the tantalizing question: If the Messiah is David’s “son” (descendant) why did David refer to him using one of the titles also used for God? They were unable to answer Him, not at that time fully appreciating just who exactly Jesus was claiming to be. The writer concludes that all angels are serving spirits sent to help those who will inherit salvation. Jesus himself was ministered to by angels at two of the lowest points of his earthly life, both at the beginning and end of His ministry, modelling how their presence and service are also available to us.

Members of the Creston Judo Club recently earned medals at a Salmo tournament.

Like Paul to the Roman church, the Hebrew writer also exhorts the believers to be hospitable to each other, pointing out how some have unwittingly entertained angels as a result, something that Abraham and Sarah had experienced many years before. While we are understandably fascinated by their existence as beings with more power, intelligence and beauty than us, Peter informs us that they themselves have set their hearts on understanding the far greater mystery of the salvation Jesus brought. Jesus said when just one person chooses to repent, it causes the angels in heaven to become overjoyed. Fallen angels, who unlike us were not tempted to sin, had no such rescue mission launched in their favour. Jesus told Nathaniel that Jacob’s dream at Bethel of the stairway allowing heavenly messengers to easily travel to and from earth was fulfilled in himself, that He himself was the stairway to Heaven. When heaven opened at His baptism, in partial fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, this special connection had already been visibly and publicly demonstrated. Later, when John the disciple attempted to bow in worship before an angel near the close of his future vision on the island of Patmos, he was sharply rebuked; the memory of the ancient rebellion in heaven and its terrible consequences remained so acute in the angel’s mind. The book of Revelation shows us how the chief fallen

by another angel, the final insult. In 2008, a 14-year-old disabled girl in a North Carolina hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit was hours from death suffering from pneumonia when the difficult decision was finally made to switch off her ventilator. Her mother had been praying for a miracle for her daughter for some years. Around this time, one of the nurses noticed a man in the girl’s room every time she entered, but when she turned around to greet him, no one was there. Just prior to the girl’s sudden and inexplicable recovery, one of the pediatricians witnessed an intensely bright light in the corridor outside the unit’s door. At the same time, her mother and other hospital staff gathered round the security camera monitor to see the startling image of an angelic being in the same corridor. Her mother’s second attempt at photographing the luminous image with her cellphone camera was successful, which, along with the story of her daughter’s remarkable recovery, led to national television news coverage. No natural explanation was found to explain either the image (which caused its own light reflex on the hospital floor) or the subsequent healing. Versions of the hospital angel video story, complete with the captured image, can be seen on YouTube. Jesus said, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. On May 11, Jane Gray and Herman Koehoorn attended the BC Principals and Vice Principals Association banquet in Richmond to receive a Community Partnership Award. Gray and Koehoorn represented the New Life Christian Church, which has provided a weekly hot lunch for eight years, and were accompanied by Prince Charles Secondary School principal Sharen Popoff. The group received one of six awards given out across B.C. to organizations/individuals

In her application letter, Popoff wrote, “The lunch is cooked in the church basement and approximately 400 of our students choose to visit and enjoy the food. The lunch is served ‘without conditions’ so no religious component is included; all students are welcome regardless. Students are greeted with warm welcomes, smiles, and hugs and given a hearty, homemade lunch each week. “The effect on the school environment is considerable. … The afternoon classes on Fridays are calm and positive. Students return from lunch smiling and happy. The students feel cared for by their community and loved by people who are ‘not related’ and, in the students’ eyes, ‘not required’ to care for them. Behavior at the church is positive and students are polite, clean up after themselves and ensure their language and actions are respectful. The cooks and servers learn student names and say hello to them in the community. … “Creston is a community heavily dominated by retired seniors. Eyes on screen, hand on mouse I am looking at a Monster. Why does It take pleasure in Harming, humiliating, hating me Yet I am glued to It’s ugly face. It barks orders and threats, It pushes me to the ground, Then I retaliate. I say mean things about others. Fear and hate chase me in a maze I cannot flee. I am bound to the works I say and to my insecurities, Then the Monster forces me onto an edge. I teeter and waver back and forth, It nudges me closer every day, with everything It says, Convincing me that I am worthless. My self-assurance disappears, My balance is lost, and The Monster laughs.

Yahk event raises $8,000 for EKFH campaign EAST KOOTENAY FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH

It is sometimes said that little towns often have the biggest hearts and nothing could be truer for the community of Yahk. Last month, members of the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society hosted the Breast Fest for A Clear View — a chicken breast dinner with no squash and desserts in cups of all sizes — and what an event it was! The community hall was dressed in its finest pink with balloons, fresh roses and tables full of donated auction items all in support of East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s digital stereotactic mammography campaign. With smooth sounds of classic favourites serenading the crowd and enticing people to dance, the Creston Community Band was

just one of the many highlights of the evening. Judy Dickson, the event coordinator, was all smiles greeting guests but it was her poise and gentleness that stood out when making the presentation to EKFH’s Donna Grainger and Cindy Yates. Dickson, also one of the faces of the campaign for Creston, and her team of creative organizers set out to prove that no matter where you live in the East Kootenay, breast cancer affects us all. With a mantra of “Yahk is the little town that could,” the group set a strong fundraising goal of $5,000 and by the end of the weekend their efforts realized an amazing $8,000 for A Clear View. “When EKFH decided to undertake this campaign we could never have realized that the biggest impact isn’t the money we will

raise for the equipment; it is about the people, the communities and

the gift of giving of themselves that is really the true story,” said

Grainger, the EKFH executive director. “I am absolutely humbled beyond words.” This latest gift from YKRS helped move the two-year, $1 million campaign to just over $750,000 in pledges and donations in just over six months. If you would like to bring leading edge technology in breast cancer care to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital please consider making a donation today by visiting EKFH’s secured website www.aclearview.ca. The EKFH expresses appreciation to all the individuals and businesses who donated items for the Breast Fest, to the organizing committee for such a fun and entertaining event and to every person who came out and supported the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society. Yahk the little town that could, certainly did.

Obituaries Walter Thomas Findell February 29, 1928 ~ April 30, 2012

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Walter Thomas Findell announces his passing on Monday, April 30, 2012 in Cranbrook, BC at 84 years of age. Walter was born on February 29, 1928 in Lewisville, NB. He was raised in and around Moncton, NB. It was in Moncton also, that he met and married Violet, the love of his life. He was a dedicated father and they cherished the privilege of raising their three children. Walter had a varied work experience that included working in the round-house for Canadian National Railroad. Later, as a big rig truck driver he covered many highway miles in nearly every province of Canada. Walter was a natural with anything mechanical – this trait served him well when he became a logger and mill owner. He enjoyed the great out of doors, and pursued his hobby of placer mining whenever possible. Walter will be remembered for his great sense of humour, and zest for life. He enjoyed his Bible reading, but in the last few years, as his vision deteriorated, you would often see him struggling as he tried to read it with his magnifying glass. He remained a committed Christian to the end. He was predeceased by his parents Sanford and Clara Findell, and his sisters Muriel Robertson and Evelyn Paisley. Walter is survived by Violet, his loving and committed wife of 52 years; his daughter Merlo (Clyde) Franklin, granddaughter Kayla (Jeremy) Geisinger, grandson Tyler Franklin; his son Mel Findell, granddaughter Jazmine Findell, grandson Jake Findell; and his daughter Mryna (Chris) Everett. A Celebration of his Life was held at Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday May 19, 2012 with Pastor Molina ofciating. A private interment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations in honour of Walter may be made to: A.D.R.A Canada, 1148 King Street East, Oshawa, Ontario, L1H 1H8 or the charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Thomas

From page 1 With the Creston Golf Club, Thomas has served as club captain, coach for junior and beginner golfers, and co-founded the Rick Clark Memorial Tournament, which has provided scholarships to Creston youth for over 20 years. As the Creston course was expanding from nine to 18 holes, Thomas researched and wrote a book on the club’s history — then had it published at his own expense and donated the proceeds to the club. His sports involvement didn’t end with golf. Thomas also promoted the local swim team and coached minor hockey. “I was coaching hockey when I couldn’t skate. But I know how to run a practice.” And when it came time for the 2006 referendum on the community complex

upgrades and indoor pool, Thomas was a strong supporter, setting up a booth at the home and garden show to educate the public. He was elated when the referendum passed.

Phil Thomas in Saturday’s Blossom Festival parade.

“It’s a great community and we have everything we want here now,” he said. Having lost an uncle and nephew to cancer, getting involved with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life was an easy

decision for Thomas. For the last 10 years, he’s taken on the selling of luminaries, arranged for participants to spell the word “hope” and have it photographed from the air, and organized choirs to sing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s You’ll Never Walk Alone. Local history is also important to Thomas, and as a self-proclaimed lover of interviewing and the art of conversation, he has collected written and oral histories of Creston Valley seniors, which have been run in the Advance and on CIDO 97.7 FM. Portions of his audio interview with Jack Wigen were played at Wigen’s funeral. “So often we don’t record what our life is about,” he said. And if that weren’t enough, he’s quietly made personal donations to the Creston and District Public Library, New Life Furniture, the Creston-Kootenay Foundation and the community complex. “One of the biggest impacts Phil has had is on our local youth,” said the letter nomi-

nating him for citizen of the year. “He never misses an opportunity to involve and encourage them to become good citizens. He often puts the focus on the young members of his relay team, assisting them with fundraising, as well as getting them to think of the difference their efforts can make in the lives of others.” Thomas hopes that they will be encouraged to carry on their elders’ legacy of volunteering; the “internalizing” that has come with the digital age and technology make it more difficult for them to reach out. “They’re the future,” said Thomas, a father of two, with four grandchildren. But anyone of any age who volunteers can feel the sense of accomplishment Thomas has enjoyed for many years. “I heard an expression one time: ‘It’s like rent for living on the planet.’ It’s a selfless thing, and I always find the people I’m doing it with are people I like to spend time with. It’s very fulfilling.”
