Putting organics in their place is a year-round activity that not only helps feed plants, lawns and hedges throughout British Columbia, but it also reduces greenhouse gas (GHG). We can all do our part to move those organics out of landfills and back to the earth where they belong. Organics left in landfill break down to create methane, a GHG that is 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Reduce organics in landfills: • Garden composts
have limits. Send hard-tobreakdown scraps like meat, bones and eggshells to the local organic composting facility. • Be mindful that bears are out looking for food, so do not add meat products or uncooked food to compost. Turn it regularly and keep it covered. • Warm weather means the kitchen bin can heat up and cause odours. Stifle the stink by placing organics in the freezer or wrap wet food waste in paper. • The heat of the summer

Capture those flies with bowls of vinegar covered with plastic wrap or spritz a disinfectant spray around the bin. • Compostable liners keep green bins clean and make disposal very easy. • If a liner is not used, rinse regularly to reduce the organics left in the bin.

Discourage rodents by sealing the bin while it generates the brown gold for the garden. • Ensure that whatever is tossed in the green bin or on the compost heap is free of pesticides or chemicals. • Every region reduces its landfill in its own way. Students enjoy cultural fishing day South Cariboo Theatre By Stephan Theodore-Jenson Elder Liz Pete is smoking fish in the Elder’s Smoke House from the Canim Lake Band’s cultural fishing day. The Elders, the Eliza Archie Memorial School students and a couple dozen of the band members went to Gustafsen Creek for the spring run of trout. A gift of tobacco for letting us catch the fish was put in the creek. Some of the students fell in the creek, while netting their fish and got wet and cold with the splash of cold creek water. They didn’t mind getting wet. The current would push the net while you were dip netting, and you would feel the fish flopping around in your net while it was trying to escape. You would lift the

There were small fish and big ones; the small ones got put back in to grow some more. It was a tiring and wet day, but it was

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet, or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy... until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard. • Horror • Rating: PG • Parents: Violence • Length 1:53

Business should be excellent for you at the moment if you work in sales. You’re a great negotiator and can close a sale to your advantage. TAURUS
You will need to define your feelings more precisely if you’re in a new relationship. Emotions aren’t always easy to cope with in a working environment. GEMINI
You’ll spend part of this week coordinating family matters. Perhaps a bit of discipline will also be necessary for the younger ones. You feel the need for a lasting peace. CANCER
You don’t feel at a loss for words this week. As you tend to say everything you think, you will help make certain situations more equitable. LEO
Even though you like a bit of luxury, you are also capable of controlling any impulsive shopping. You could decide to organize a very profitable garage sale. VIRGO
You will be faced with a situation that will require a swift reaction. If this happens at work, your response will be noted and a good promotion or bonus will result. LIBRA
Mars has been in Virgo for some time now, so it’s possible that your vitality is dwindling. Don’t allow yourself to neglect your need for sleep, and take care to eat a healthier diet.

Fields Stores flourish in Western Canada For some communities, the local Fields Store is their lifeline, and until recently, many towns were facing difficult days ahead with the news their Fields stores would be closing. However, communities like 100 Mile House can breathe a little easier these days, as FHC Holdings Ltd. has purchased 57 Fields stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, and plans to remain a strong member of each of these communities for many years to come. “Fields has been an integral part of many communities across Western Canada for many years,” says FHC president Jason McDougall. “Our team is very excited at the prospect of serving the 57 communities in which it has acquired stores, and will work to ensure people continue to be able to get what they need in their local communities.” Fields has been part of the landscape of Western Canada for more than 60 years, with the first store opened in Vancouver in 1950. A fixture in small towns for decades, Fields will continue to proudly serve the small communities that have been acquired by FHC, and will work with each of them to further ensure they

are meeting and exceeding the needs of its customers. “Our focus always goes back to how we can best serve the customer in our communities,” adds McDougall. “The goal is to bring in the merchandise that makes the most sense for each community
we serve, and we’re looking forward to bringing in a selection of great products and merchandise to communities across the West. “Our stores will be focused on more everyday low prices, providing more value through deals on a regular basis and
will continue to provide an assortment of those everyday items customers have always expected as well.” McDougall says he is eager to get to know the store managers and people in the communities, and will be travelling around to each store
in the near future to ensure the company is truly engaged at every level. As a further demonstration of Fields commitment to the communities, a percentage of profits will go to support various initiatives and charities within each community.

Spring Light Wellness fair attended by many Heather Nelson Free Press
The Spring Light Wellness fair at the Valley Room in 100 Mile House on May 5 was well attended, spokesperson Kaye Castleman says, adding it was a “very auspicious day with the closest and largest full moon of 2012 coming that evening.” More than 70 people signed our guest book, she notes. “We were all very pleased with the turnout, especially since what we offer is not mainstream.” There were 12 presenters, offering information and demonstrations from reiki, tai chi, channelling, healing touch
practice, information on medicinal herbs and more. There were many positive comments and requests from folks wanting to be involved next time the group holds a fair, Castleman says. “I was so pleased to see all the teenagers at the fair; they were very interested in all of the presenters. When John Archie spoke, the whole room was quieted down.” She says Archie heals through sharing his story, which gives people permission to open up. The informal group is considering the option of expanding the fair next year, with the possibility of having an indoor/

Bring the family and your pots! Join Horse Lake Garden Centre, Cariboo Plant Ranch and community members in planting pots and window planters for your home or your business. Potting soil, pots, tools and everything you will need to kick-start your planters will be available. The plant sale will coincide with the Flea’s Knees market. Stop in and pick up your plants and other items and enjoy a delicious organic espresso or iced coffee drink and a naturally raised locally produced hot dog from Retro Dog. What a great way to spend a Sunday! This year there will be something new for the kids. Each garden centre will have a sunflower available to purchase for the kids to grow and nurture to show off at the upcoming fall fair. This contest will be an exciting way to help encourage children to plant and care for a flower to perhaps win a ribbon at the fair. It’s gymkhana time again at the 100 Mile & District Outriders Club and its 2012 series kicks off on May 27 with the first of four monthly events to be held at the Outriders’ outdoor arena behind the South Cariboo Rec. Centre. The day of games on horseback starts at 10 a.m. and offers categories for all ages, from tots on lead line to the Jack Benny division for those 39 and holding, says co-ordinator Jen Szigety. Events include pole bending, stake
race, barrels, keyhole, baton relay and scurry race and the entry fee for each will be $4. Day prizes are $5, $3 and $1 for first, second and third respectively. Day aggregate winners will receive horserelated merchandise prizes. Szigety says participants must have a current B.C. Horse Council membership to fulfill insurance requirements. Folks who aren’t Outriders club members will also be charged $10 to participate in each gymkhana, but memberships can be purchased for $25 an individual and $35

BUY A GARAGE SALE PACKAGE AT THE 100 MILE FREE PRESS AND WE’LL HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT SALE! 10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! Good show by local soccer players
Ken Alexander Free Press
The Cariboo Youth Soccer League got underway in Quesnel on May 6 and 100 Mile House squads put on a good show. The U14 girls lost 3-0 to Williams Lake and 7-2 to Quesnel. However, team manager Pam Easton says the girls showed good teamwork, but just
ran out of steam in their games. The U16 girls won their first game against Williams Lake B team, with goals from Tiffany Keating, Katelyn Raimundo, including an amazing marker by Shian Remanente. However, they lost their second game 1-0 to Williams Lake A team. Manager Jeannie Capnerhurst says Taylor Blades was in
goal both games and did an outstanding job. The U12 girls had a great day, as they won their first game a 7-3 against Prince George, with Rachel Cross and Courtney Cave sharing the net-minder duties. “They had excellent field position, great teamwork and they came out ready to play, coach Lianne Heales says, adding it was a true team effort.
Goal scorers included Sydni Poggenpohl, Olivia Poggenpohl and Ashley Holyk with a hat trick. They tied their second game 1-1 against Williams Lake U11 team. Heales says it was a very even match with Allison Carr and Ashley Holyk in goal, and S. Poggenpohl was the 100 Mile goal scorer. “Lydia Kinasewich and Avery Collinson
were both outstanding, as they played with a lot of determination.” The U12 Boys registered a win against Prince George and a loss against Williams Lake. Both were hardfought games with a lot of back-and-forth action. Overall, a very successful day with good weather and great representation from our community, says Heales.

Humming along... Pausing for a sweet sip at 108 Mile Ranch, this hummingbird was captured on camera as it hovered briefly for an all-important energy drink. The warm weather has heightened sightings of avian activity at feeders.
