Classic trend or
Judy, Lillian, Germaine, Sherri One of the best kept secrets in the North Okanagan, Enderby Jewellers offers their customers a unique shopping experience.
70s style?
Being in the jewellery business for over 30 years and owning Enderby Jewellers for the past 21 years, Judy feels the most exciting development in the industry has been the discovery of the Canadian diamond. Their quality is exceptional and Judy and her staff will help you pick the one that is right for you. Other product lines featured in the store are Pandora, Q-Ray, Kameleon, gold & silver jewellery, watches and clocks.
If you’re fed up with the 80s-style retro fashions that have been on the street for a while now — especially those little Peter Pan ankle boots — you’ll be pleased to know that the softer 70s look has begun a return and is not likely to disappear any time soon. That’s right, straight from Woodstock, the 70s style is all the rage. Get ready to be groovy again!
Not only do they carry a full selection of jewellery, they also offer a complete line of giftware and collectables including Speed Freaks, Willowtree, Bunnykins, Noritake, ESPE and Derek Alexander. They also do engraving, from wine glasses for the head table, to a personal message on your party or grad gift, to signage and name badges for your office, to awards for your sports team, wood, glass, plastic, acrylic, jewellery & inside rings they can engrave “just about” anything. They pride themselves on helping you find the perfect diamond or gift for any occasion. Their store has lots to see - so they invite you to come browse and discover for yourself why they are called “The Secret Store”.

The 70s style is an easy trend to follow. Just take your inspiration from the flower power folk singers of that era, with their highwaisted bell bottom pants and full colour spectrum. For a touch of hippy chic, emphasize the waist by combining pants with a tieneck blouse, tucked into the pants and worn with an attractive leather belt and unique belt buckle.

Maxi dresses are also making a comeback this season. To compliment a pretty floor-brushing dress, choose a pair of platform-soled shoes. Musts for the season are accessories such as wide-brimmed hats, in felt or wool, or floral headbands worn down around the forehead — a classic hippy look.
Are you going to follow the hippy chic trend ? (Photos www.annie50.com)
If your inclination is to ignore the more flamboyant 70s-influenced trends, the classic look will do just fine this season. Both these styles were seen during a recent fashion show held by Annie 50, where Eastern European folklore influences brought a soft and homey look to the runway. But no matter which decade sways you, a style worn elegantly will always be in fashion!

Separating business, home and personal identity can be difficult for entrepreneurs. You have so much of yourself wrapped up in what you do for a living. Running a business tends to be all-consuming and it can be hard to tell where you stop and your business begins and, not just in terms of your emotional investment. Your personal and company finances can also get mixed together if you’re not careful. There are benefits to keeping your business and personal finances separate. First and foremost, it legitimizes what you’re doing, not only in your eyes but in the eyes of other interested parties, including bankers and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Legitimate business expenses can be deducted from your business revenues to reduce taxable income. This means that if you keep detailed accounting records, and track the expenses you incur over the course of the year, you will never pay more tax than you have to. Of course, your expenses have to be legitimate and they have to be backed up with the necessary receipts and/or other documentation. The second important benefit for making a clear distinction between your business and personal finances is that, you get an accurate and objective view of your business’ viability. You’ll never know if it can support both you and your goals in the short and long term if you don’t have an uncompromised picture of its finances. It can be challenging to keep your business and personal finances separated, the following tips can help you.
I
f you operate from your home, try to confine your work to one room or one area and keep that space exclusively for your business. This way, you can easily determine
the percentage of housing costs to apply to the business. As much as possible, find ways to clearly distinguish what belongs to the business and what doesn’t. For example, if you can, set up a separate business phone line or at least track your business telephone usage.

et up a company credit card and use it for business expenses. Remember, though, that the card is a tracking tool, not a source of financing. Interest on credit cards is too high to be using one to float your business.
Establish a filing systemDon’tfor your business receipts. throw them all in a shoebox and hand them to an accountant at the end of the year. The shoebox provides you with virtually no ongoing financial information. The least you should do is figure out the major expense categories that you have and, as your costs are incurred, file the invoices and receipts accordingly. Then, once a month, enter the information into your revenue/expense and cash flow statements.
I
f you use your car for business purposes, keep a log of the kilometers you travel for the business. You’ll be able to apply a percentage of your vehicle expenses against your business revenues at year end. Don’t think you need to do it all. Consult with your accountant to set up a system that makes sense for you. However, it is critical to have enough financial understanding to tell if you’re making a profit, how your cash flow is doing, and how each area of your business is doing.” Women’s Enterprise Centre is the go-to place for BC women business owners for business loans, skills training, business advisory services, resources, publications and referrals. Transforming life’s challenges “Problems cannot be solved at the
same level of awareness that created them.” – Albert Einstein’s words of genius. How true they are! Luckily, we can all get to a higher level of awareness. Once there we can access our own internal wisdom and solutions. We really do have the answers to our problems. Breathing When stressed or anxious, we take fast, shallow breaths. Our ‘fight or flight’ response is in high gear, keeping us stuck at a survival level of thinking. Deep, slow breaths calm us, which helps us think more clearly. We can’t be anxious if we’re breathing slowly and deeply. So breathe! Words Our words have a powerful impact on us. Guilt, failure, and low self esteem are induced by words and beliefs such as ‘should have’‘ought to have’ and ‘must.’ As psychologist Albert Ellis said, “Stop ‘shoulding’ all over yourself !” Emotions our emotions create our thoughts which create our actions. So, if we want to access new levels of thinking, one of the first places to begin is with our emotions. It’s important to come from positive emotions -- love, gratitude, joy, passion, excitement, enthusiasm, satisfaction, rather than disappointment, worry, criticism, anger, hate, envy, guilt, despair, fear. If we are experiencing the negative emotions, it’s important to acknowl-
edge and heal them. Psychotherapy/Counselling – Our beliefs and emotions may be buried so deeply in our subconscious that we’ve no idea we even have them. Imagine we’re surrounded by walls and we can’t see past them. Others, especially those trained in the field, have the ability to help us create windows from which we’re able to see and interpret the world differently. Also, a breath of fresh air can come through those windows to clear out and heal the negative thoughts and emotions. These insights and ‘spring’ cleaning give us an opportunity to access our inner wisdom. Hypnosis – is deep relaxation with focused concentration. It’s a wonderful tool for working directly with the subconscious mind to change and heal unwanted, unhealthy beliefs and to access our inner wisdom. There are many other techniques that help us access higher levels of awareness including positive affirmations, EFT (emotional freedom technique), biofeedback, meditating, exercise, yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, progressive muscle relaxation, laughing, taking some time outs during the day, and two of my personal favourites walking in nature and being with animals.
Wishing you much success in accessing your internal wisdom!

Accessorize for the season The important thing to bear in mind this year is that accessories are not just satellite features of an outfit; they are essentials. If your jewellery box is looking a little bare, don’t worry. Markets stalls, mall shops, and local boutiques are in the know and are overflowing with accessories. You won’t want to leave home this year without the basics. Start with a thin belt, known as a skinny belt, just like the jeans. This latest trend will also make you look slimmer! Skinny belts are meant to be worn directly on the waist and not low slung, on the hips. They give a beautiful finishing touch to tunics, s h i r t dresses, and sweaters. In the jewellery department, charm bracelets are must-haves this year. Dangling and tinkling together at the wrist, charms are a fun throwback to the Seventies. Bracelets and charms are available in a surprising assortment of colours, such as
bronze, gold, silver, and other metallic colours. Have fun choosing charms that suit your personality and interests; carefully chosen charms also make perfect friendship gifts! Finish o f f

your look with the perfect handbag. Not everyone can afford the latest Coach bag, but most of us will be very happy with a nicely made imitation, inspired by the real thing. Worn over the shoulder or hanging from the wrist, a chic bag is definitely a fashionista wardrobe staple. Back (left to right): Stacey, Kylah, Carly, Stephanie. Front (left to right): Tammy and Kari

Camel beige: this warm neutral is hot! If you can only add one new item to your wardrobe this year, make sure it’s a cameltoned piece. Hannah MacGibbon, former designer for Chloé, featured this warm, neutral palette last year, and we are now seeing it top this year’s trends. Camel tones are in all our favourite boutiques right now, so use this timeless and elegant colour as the basis for your wardrobe. It will set off a new look to perfection. In the palette of neutrals, classic camel is situated right in the middle — on the paler end of the scale, you move into beige; darker, and it’s more likely to be called sand. The true camel tone suits all complexions, although it’s particularly flattering for blondes. Whatever your colouring, take care to avoid combining camel with offwhite, unless an old-fashioned look is what you’re after. The camel-coloured coat is the jewel of the season. An extremely practical colour, it can be combined with a scarf to create a very personalized look. Beautiful wrap-over coats are getting special notice this season, with huge cowl necklines that leave just enough room to knot a knitted scarf around the neck. They can also be worn open in warmer weather, as their folds have been designed to hang beautifully down to either side. Perfect for every occasion, the wrap-over camel coat can be worn to great effect over any of this season’s outfits. Camel: the “in” colour that will keep us warm. (Photos www.cassis.ca)
Rachelle Dixon Locally made, quality, designer clothing at affordable prices! After celebrating over a decade of business it was time to take a look back to where my dream for Square One started. To fill my store with all my own creations and share my love of fashion with the world. From a home based sewing business to my newest retail location, it has been quite a journey. The first downtown location was open four years. And with the level our own manufacturing growing so has the need for more space. With the purchase of a commercial building, SQUARE ONE APPAREL & SALON moved across 30th Avenue and re-opened in our new space December 2011. With the addition of a fabulous hair salon right in the store, we are now able to dress and style Vernon’s women from head to toe. My new 2012 spring/summer women’s collection is now in full production. Being made right here in our store, there are new items hitting the floor daily. And custom work is my specialty, so if it doesn’t fit the way you like, I will make you one that does. From a full line of athletic/yoga and dance apparel to a bridal gown for that special day, or alterations and repairs to your families existing wardrobe, we are a full service fashion outlet with new fashions each season including a large selection of denim year round.
We Care Home Health Services is the only accredited agency in the North Okanagan and the 2012 recipient for Best Professional Service award from the Business Excellence Awards.
With the difficult times many of us have seen here locally for the last few years a lot has changed, but one thing remains the same … We all still have to get dressed every day so here at Square One we’ve got ‘ya covered! As time has evolved so has the fashion needs of our customers. So as designer I just simply start with beautiful basics … Shall we say! “TAKING IT BACK TO SQUARE ONE” What I love to create and wear myself, comfortable, affordable, beautiful fashions, that I can wear in every aspect of my life. So don’t forget to stop every now and again, and take some time to look and feel beautiful. Because after all…life is like a fashion show, so make sure every step you take, is with your best dressed foot forward!”

Craft an engaging ‘elevator speech’ Savvy business owners make it a priority to market themselves and their business every day – and with a few tools and a little practice you can become your very own best marketing talent. Along with your business card, one of the most effective and least costly marketing tools is an elevator speech something that every business owner can, and should, take full advantage of. An elevator speech is an overview of your product or service that you can share in the time span of an elevator ride – which can be as long as two minutes or as short as thirty seconds. Your elevator speech should be designed to start off with a statement about what you can provide and what the benefits are. Your listener will be thinking “what’s in it for me?” and it is up to you to tell them the value you or your business can provide. Be aware of your competitive advantage and take time to incorporate that into your elevator speech. Keep in mind that you’ll need to grab your listener’s attention right at the start. If you can prompt your listener to ask a question, you will be able to continue the conversation and more fully engage their interest. Many business owners continuously refine their message and will have

more than one version of their elevator speech – each one tailored to specific audiences and situations. When someone asks “what do you do?” or when you are given an opportunity to introduce yourself and your business at a meeting, your response should flow smoothly, without hesitation and without sounding like the proverbial sales pitch. With a clear, carefully rehearsed message, you will be ready to take advantage of every encounter, no matter how brief. Make it punchy and relevant. The opportunity to connect often arises during or shortly after introductions and you’ll want to make that first impression count. How to avoid
common investment traps When it comes to investing, many people approach their initial foray with a degree of trepidation. Much of that is due to the nature of investing, which involves a leap of faith even for the most conservative investments. The economic downturn that began near the end of the first decade of the 21st century has only added to the fears associated with investing. While investing is a risk, it’s also a necessary step for men and women hoping to secure their financial futures. Whether an investment portfolio consists of just an RRSP or a TSFA, men and women who hope to retire need to find a way to balance their fear of investing with their desire to retire comfortably. Many of those fears can be countered by watching out for some of these common investment traps. Environmental investments. The “go green” movement has opened the door for scores of investment traps that prey on an investor’s desire to invest in ways that will improve their bottom line and the environment at the same time. Such traps are especially prevalent in the aftermath of environmental disasters like oil spills. Investors should be wary of e-mail or telemarketing campaigns that promise inves-

Whenever investing in green technologies, investors should do extensive research before agreeing to invest. “Hot tips.” Nearly every investor has been offered a “hot tip” at one point or another. Novice and even veteran investors should be especially wary of such tips, which are often unfounded
and could cost investors substantial amounts of money in the long run. Special deals. Some private deals are legitimate, though investors, particularly beginners, must be especially wary of “special” investment deals that often prey on unsuspecting investors. Typically framed as a chance to get in on the ground floor and invest in a business that’s trying to raise capital, these “special” deals are often fraudulent and investors could lose a lot of money. Beware of online sales pitches. Social media has made it easier than ever before for con artists to victimize unsuspecting investors. This investment trap often boasts high-yield returns and might even suggest these returns are tax-free. Any investment that guarantees either of these things is too good to be true, and beginning investors should avoid them. Gold scams. Though some investors embraced gold as an investment opportunity during the economic downturn, beginners should be wary of investment pitches that offer to buy gold for investors and then sell it once the value of gold has risen. Investors who want to invest in gold should instead consider a gold fund. The British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) strong encourages investors to be cautious about any investment that bears the following ‘red flags:’ Unreasonable or guaranteed high annual returns (with little or no risk) Insider tip/membership opportunity or secrecy (usually with an urgency to act quickly) Money is moved offshore (references to tax avoidance) Profit like the ‘experts’ Great investment opportunity (“Your friends can’t be wrong.”) BCSC is the independent provincial government agency responsible for regulating trading in securities in the province. BC investors can report a suspicious investment or inquire about any investment or financial advisor by contacting the BCSC at 604.899.6854 or 1.800.655.5244.

How to juggle commitments to work and family The two-income family has grown so much in recent years that it has almost become the norm. It’s often not a question of “Does Mom work?” but rather, “What does Mom do for a living?” Still, having both parents contributing to the household income means changes to the family dynamic are inevitable. This begs the question of how to balance it all. Proponents of dual-income families say that in an economy where everything seems to cost more, it’s a smart idea for both parents to work. This scenario may offer greater financial security, and protect against financial disaster should the “primary”earner lose his or her job. It has also been said that when both parents work, there are opportunities to split up respon-

Others say that it’s actually a financial trap. There are arguments that the abundance of two-income families has driven up prices so that it is more difficult for individuals with one income to live comfortably. Plus, there’s no guarantee that two incomes will provide financial security, especially when every penny is accounted for, as is often the case in two-income environments.

eas of life where it can be stressful or difficult to do it all, especially from the woman’s perspective. However, there are many strategies for staying sane while working and caring for a family.
HERE ARE A FEW TIPS: Stay involved in school. Working parents may be at a loss as to how they can get involved with school or daycare happenings without compromising work. While not everyone can be “Class Mom,” ask the teacher what you can do to contribute on your own time. Perhaps you can use business savvy to create a class Web site or weekly newsletter. Talk with your boss to see if one day a month can be taken so that you can volunteer time at school, with work hours made up on a weekend or with a flex time program. Find out if party planning can be done after work hours. Avoid busy mornings. With everyone getting dressed and ready for work and school at the same time, mornings can be chaotic. The best idea is to do as much as possible the night before. Everyone in the household should lay his or her clothes out for the following day. Briefcases and backpacks should be stocked and ready to grab. Lunches can be premade and stored in the refrigerator. You can have the children do as much as they can to free up your time to ready yourself. This will help them feel important as well as give you a break. Make arrangements with neighbors to get kids on the school bus or participate in a car pool scenario. Making the most of evenings. Set aside at least one night a week where the family comes together. This means no late work projects, sports practices,
etc. Turn off the television and spend On other nights, take the time to touch base with everyone in the house. Aim for family dinners together, even if it’s a quick meal of heat-and-eat convenience foods. Establish a routine. Kids (and often adults) feel most comfortable with a routine, especially when they know what to expect. Create a routine that works for you -- don’t worry if it’s not the perceived ‘right’ way to do things. For example, maybe the kids can eat a toaster cake on the way to school if breakfast time is rushed. It’s alright to let the kids watch a few minutes of cartoons in the morning if it frees up a moment for you to hop in the shower. Get some help. You don’t have to be Superwoman to get it all done. Sometimes it takes a little help. If the laundry is overflowing and you’d rather play with the kids on the weekend instead of spending the day folding clothes, drop it off at the laundromat to be washed and folded. Set up a kid swap with other working moms so that one day they take and entertain the kids and the next day you do, especially if work commitments call. Perhaps a grandparent or a neighbor can pitch in. Order groceries online and have them delivered so it frees up more time for the family. It’s alright to set aside some time for yourself and your spouse. It doesn’t always have to be about the kids. In fact, if your relationship is strong, it will carry over into the way you handle yourself with the children and promote a stronger dynamic and could help you focus more at work. Whenever possible, take moments to talk with your spouse or go to bed at the same time and enjoy private moments.

Sarah McRae Keshiki Gardening is proud to be celebrating over 30 years in business right here in the Okanagan. We are a family run business started by my husband William in 1981 and we have been fortunate enough to work together with out sons who began helping at a very early age and grew up in the landscape industry. They are now off to see the world by my husband and I are so enamoured with the area we have no intention of going very far from home. Our company keeps us very busy 12 months of the year because along with landscaping, irrigation installation/service and commercial grounds maintenance we also do snow removal. Many of our customers have been with us since the very early years of our business. I believe this says a great deal about our service and work ethic. We also happen to love what we do. I feel very fortunate to be able to work outdoors as I really enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. In my spare time I enjoy reading, Zumba and walking with our 15 year old ‘puppy’.

Jen Crane “Brilliant, creative, attention to detail, going the extra mile…….” These are just some of the words her clients use to describe the talents of award winning Graphic Designer Jen Crane. With a degree in Professional Photography from Dawson College in Montreal, Jen has over 12 years combined experience in the design field. She has worked with clients and has been recognized for her designs both locally and internationally. Among some of the awards she has received, she won the Canada wide Kokanee Crankworx design competition 2 years in a row by designing a limited edition Kokanee can. The beer cans were put into production and featured in liquor stores across Canada. A natural talent for creativity, art and aesthetics enables Jen to provide her clients with unique, one-of-a-kind and effective designs. Well-travelled and versatile, Jen always welcomes a good challenge. She feels that it’s integral to create your own visual style, but beyond it being unique for yourself, it needs to be identifiable by others. With so much mixed media attacking our senses these days, it’s important for businesses not to get lost in the branding shuffle; especially the small businesses in our area that have been here forever and are an important part of our community. Whether it’s a small logo design, vehicle graphics, or a full image overhaul; identity is key. To be noticed, design doesn’t need to be full of bells and whistles and fancy filler. A design should be well thought out, researched and concise. The end result needs to be effective, not just flashy. Jen is the lead designer at Sunshine Autographics, a full-service graphics and sign shop that has serviced Vernon for over 25 years. With a large array of capabilities Sunshine provides design, print, production and installation services. As well as graphics, Sunshine is also an authorized LineX spray-in boxliner facility and has on-site 3M certified rockguard installers. They also offer a full range of vehicle, residential and commercial window tinting services. From door decals, to banners, to custom design, to vehicle wraps, to paint protection, to houseboats, Sunshine Autographics will get the job done.

As the old saying goes, “A woman’s work is never done.” Unfortunately, many women find this adage still rings true, particularly in regard to the workplace. According to the AFL-CIO, the average 25 year old woman who works fulltime, year-round until she retires at age 65 will earn $523,000 less than the average working man. Women earn roughly 20 percent less than men. Though women have made large advances toward economic equality, a disparity in pay between men and women still exists.

Leanne Topham How a student learns is sometimes a riddle. Since 1989, Potentials Learning Centre for Vernon and area has been helping students solve that riddle successfully. Students who are years behind in reading, math, and/or spelling catch up and go on to excel at school. This unique program, directed by Ms. Leanne Topham, a specialized learning therapist, has helped students who have suspected or diagnosed learning disabilities (like dyslexia) to overcome their challenges. At Potentials Learning Centre, the biggest reward is to see a student finally ‘get it’, and see the difference that also makes in his or her confidence and self-esteem. As difficult as it can be for women to advance, there are ways to break through. In 2009, a report by Bloomberg News discovered that many women in top CEO positions earned substantially more than their male counterparts. Female CEOs of Yahoo!(R), PepsiTM and KraftTM earn salaries as high as $45 million. Despite progress, there are still many women earning less and getting left behind. There are strategies women can employ to change this. • Be more aggressive in negotiations. When negotiating salary, don’t be shy. Be aggressive when pursuing a salary that is commen-
• Find a mentor. Networking remains one of the key ways to advance in the business world. Relying on the experience of a mentor can help you with your career and the pressures that come with it. Seek mentors whose accomplishments you admire and who are willing to offer advice and encouragement. • Start your own business. Women who find their careers have hit dead end smay want to consider going into business for themselves. This way they can spread their wings and be in charge.

LOAN
Securing a loan in today’s economy is not as easy as it might have been as recently as four years ago. Loans are still available, but men and women should know that the process of getting a small business loan is timeconsuming and often tedious. There are steps prospective loan applicants should take to make the process go more smoothly. Contact Community Futures North Okanagan Potential entrepreneurs and many small businesses need services to help develop, grow and enhance their operations. They also provide loans for business succession and business purchasing. If you are considering buying a business or want to assist key employees to develop an employee buy-in plan, call Community Futures to assist in the financial structure. Community Futures believes in supporting businesses to be more sustainable. Investing in green technologies or upgrading buildings and capital equipment to meet environmental
standards or to simply save expenses and emissions can be a sound business investment. Talk to them about how making your business “greener’ can help your bottom line. Special loan funds have been designated for entrepreneurs with disabilities and youth entrepreneurs as CF tries to support all members of the community.Visit Community Futures at futurebc.com Know your credit rating and address any issues or concerns Personal credit rating carries significant weight with lenders. Lenders want to work with borrowers they know can manage their money responsibly, and personal credit rating is perhaps the best indicator of a person’s ability to manage money. In general, prospective borrowers with a credit score below 650 struggle to secure loans. Before beginning the application process, men and women should improve their scores as much as possible while addressing any discrepancies. Have a solid business plan ready to go The lender will want to see a business plan before even considering giving a loan. The business plan, which should include a definition of the product, its market and potential revenue, among other things, should be airtight and ready at the onset of the application process.

Salary might garner all the glory, but many times additional benefits are just as significant when one is deciding to accept or decline a job offer. The offer with the highest salary isn’t necessarily the ultimate deal for everyone. Instead, it’s best to consider additional benefits before making such an important decision. Retirement Pensions are largely a thing of the past, but companies that do provide pension plans should merit heavy consideration. But even if most applicants are unlikely to find a company with a pension plan, there is the issue of an RRSP and whether a company will match an employee’s contributions. Companies will typically only match up to a certain percentage, but a company that does match employee contributions should be very appealing. Vacation time and how employees earn it is relatively standard, but some companies do offer better packages than others. In general, employees who have been with the company 1 to 3 years get two weeks of vacation time, while those who have been with a company for 4 to 10 years typically receive three weeks vacation time. However, not all companies adhere to this standard, and some might require employees to work as many as six years before earning a third week of vacation. Applicants must decide if salary or additional vacation time is a higher priority. Medical insurance varies greatly depending on the company. Larger companies might offer more afford-
able medical insurance, giving them a distinct advantage over smaller companies when applicants have a spouse and children to consider. Holidays are typically a minor consideration, but some applicants might prefer a job that guarantees they get all of the major holidays off, even if it means taking less in salary. Applicants who typically travel significant distances during the holidays might want a job that gives them an extra day, such as the day after Thanksgiving, rather than one that requires they use a vacation or personal day to travel during the holidays. Tuition assistance Some companies provide tuition assistance to employees who want to continue their education. Such assistance can be worth thousands of dollars, mitigating any concerns about lower salary offers. Stock options below market value might make a job more appealing even if the initial salary offer doesn’t compare to other offers. The cost of child care is substantial, and men and women with children to consider might prefer a job that assists with, or completely covers, those costs more than a job that simply offers the best salary. Gym memberships have also gotten more expensive, and some companies have deals with local gyms that make their employees eligible for discounted rates. Some companies also have gyms on campus that are free as well as convenient.

Platform shoes are back for the girl next door Platform shoes will be strutting down sidewalks ever y where, in closed and open styles. The flamboyant Lady Gaga, known worldwide for her volatile music and outrageous style, has made platform soles her favourite accessory. However famous she maybe, her influence is only partially responsible for the resurging popularity of platform shoes. In fact, the one-piece sole, characteristic of platform shoes, was used by the people of ancient Greece so they wouldn’t get their feet dirty on muddy walkways. In the
1970s, these thick soles made a huge comeback, duly inspired by the singing group Abba. These high heels were not only fashionable, they were very useful: they prevented the era’s bell-bottom pants and maxi dresses from dragging on the ground. Twenty years later, platform soles were adopted by fashion again, notably by the Spice Girls, the famous British pop group. No longer the reserve of stage performers, the twenty-firstcentury platform shoe is for the girl next door. The stable platform heel is much more comfortable than a classic stiletto heel. That makes it the perfect shoe for those who want to spare their feet some suffering. By the way, platform shoes are also flattering for legs and refine silhouettes — one try and you’ll be convinced!
Platform shoes will be on sidewalks everywhere, in closed or open styles. (Photos www.aldoshoes.com)

ecoming a business owner is a goal for many women. Starting a business is seldom easy, but the process can be streamlined when a person knows the steps to take. Female entrepreneurs are collectively known as “Janes,” and they are a big part of the country’s financial landscape. For women who want to become Janes, there are certain steps to take to develop and launch a business. Here is some of their guidance in doing so.
Find a mentor There are organizations that provide free resources online and locally for the prospective small business owner. Individuals also can connect with current business owners in the neighborhood and pick their brains about the best way to begin.

Secure funding Businesses require start-up capital. The majority of business developers apply for a business loan. This is where a business plan can be an asset. Also, grants may be an option. Some business grants are available through state and local programs, nonprofit organizations and other groups.
Secure legal representation There are certain business laws and employee laws that an individual will need to know to avoid fines and other legal recourse. Securing legal representation ahead of time can help prospective business owners navigate the legal system.
Budget and plan Write a business plan for marketing This may seem like an intimidating part of starting a busi- and advertising ness, but getting thoughts written out in black and white can be a good organizational step. It’s important to get the word out about the new business. Think about community-based activities that can advertise the new business. A web site and newspaper advertising, both in print and online, can be a good starting point.

Louise Tanner Louise Tanner is an IACT certified colon hydrotherapist at Okanagan Natural Medicine. Louise is known for her knowledge and gentle but effective treatments. Colon hydrotherapy is a highly successful detoxification treatment. It removes accumulated toxins from the body by flushing the colon with purified water. It is a core component of health maintenance and disease prevention in cultures throughout the world. Louise works with people doing cleanses, those trying to improve their constipation and IBS and also receives referrals from the hospital to do colonoscopy prep work. The colon is the key waste evacuation route for the body. Our bodies are bombarded from every direction with substances we were not designed to process or eliminate such as air pollution, chemicals founds in our food, and industrial, beauty and household products. When married with our Western lifestyle — stress, alcohol, cigarettes, infrequent exercise and improper diet, the body is overloaded and cannot eliminate toxins properly. As years pass a person’s body, who continues to eat poorly and live under emotional stress, will gradually become overwhelmed by the built-up toxicity. This is when illnesses such as allergies, arthritis, migraines, skin disorders, heart disease, weight gain, metabolic/ hormone imbalances, depression, bloating/gas, constipation, parasites, candida and others can manifest themselves. Covered by Extended Health Plans, colon hydrotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for enhancing good health. Louise has a gentle and professional manner and an amazing history in health care as one of the very first licensed midwives in Canada and as a med tech in IV therapies. She currently oversees the colon hydrotherapy suite as well as being an IV therapist doing blood draws for food allergy tests, giving vitamin injections, providing chelation services and is an integral part of the health care providers at Okanagan Natural Medicine.
Dr. Tina Garrison Dr. Garrison’s passion, in her practice, is treating all aspects of fertility. She has had considerable success helping women get and stay pregnant, assisting and supporting the birth process and assisting new parents as their children grow. Dr. Garrison is happy to be part of a team looking at the over all health of patients undergoing assisted reproductive therapy like IVF or IUI to help increase their chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby. Dr. Garrison continues to learn more about this subject to ensure she has all options at her disposal for her patients. This includes studying under some of the most prominent fertility experts in England, North America and Australia. She is a Naturopathic Physician that has also had additional training in acupuncture, homeopathy, bio identical hormones, bowen therapy and is able to write prescriptions. She looks after all aspects of reproductive health from patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, to erectile dysfunction and low sperm count. Dr. Tina Garrison completed her undergraduate degree at Royal Roads University majoring in Environmental Science. After working in Banff National Park in their fire management office she returned to school and received her medical training and graduated from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in 2007. She is married to Jason Baughen and is mom to Eli and Mason, these two boys definitely keep her on her toes. From trying to answer their huge life questions, to simply finding earthworms in the car! She feels her life has definitely been blessed by having them in her life. Dr. Garrison looks forward to receiving you at Okanagan Natural Medicine.
So, whether you are looking to complete your first 5k marathon, tackle an endurance event such as a triathlon, or just plain participate in the race of life, Mel encourages you to develop a nutritional strategy allowing you to get the most out of your life.

Coping with stress
AT THE OFFICE
Stress is a part of most professions and can even be a good motivator. However, when stress is prolonged or excessive, the results can be very unhealthy. Men and women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. When faced with prolonged or excessive stress at the office, men and women can take the following approaches to avoid succumbing to stress.
Determine what is causing the stress Stress triggers vary depending on
the individual, so men and women who are coping with excessive stress should write down anything that causes them a negative response, whether that response is physical, emotional or mental. Choose one and work to resolve it. Determine if there is a way this trigger can be avoided. Do this with each trigger one by one. It might not be possible to successfully address each trigger, but it’s worth the try and it is likely that certain triggers can be successfully avoided.
Manage time effectively One of the problems with an increased workload is the time in the day to complete that work does not simultaneously increase. This reality makes it easy to become overwhelmed with stress. But a few time management techniques can help. Prioritize certain tasks, ensuring proj-
40
percent of employees admitted their workload had increased compared with the previous year
ects that are time-sensitive get done ahead of those that aren’t. When setting a schedule for work, be realistic. If a schedule isn’t realistic, that will only cause more stress.
Maintain a personal life Effectively managing stress at work involves having a personal life away from the office. All work and no play is a recipe for stress. No matter how big a workload awaits you at the office,
be sure to make time for enjoyable activities away from work. Such time, even if it’s not as often as you might like, makes dealing with stress at the office that much easier to handle.
Remain physically active Exercise is a great remedy for stress. Some researchers feel exercise enhances the body’s ability to respond to stress. In addition, exercise seems to give the body practice at dealing with stress. While exercising, the body’s physiological systems are forced to communicate with one another. These same systems must also communicate with one another when responding to stress. Regular exercise helps the body communicate more efficiently, something that helps when the time comes to respond to stress. Stress at the office is likely always going to be a concern for working men and women. However, there are ways to effectively cope with stress no matter how daunting a workload might be.

How Sleep Affects Work
Invest in a new mattress Limit caffeine intake Maintain a regular sleep schedule Keep the bedroom for sleeping
Women in Business Sunday, May 27, 2012 - The Morning Star S21 People often discuss how sleep -- and often lack thereof -- can affect work performance. Similar to how stress affects sleep, work has profound implications on sleep as well. When their schedule calls for it, shift workers must alter their body’s natural circadian rhythm in order to switch from sleeping at night to day. Some employees work long hours with only short bursts of sleep available before they have to report back to work the next day.
Not getting enough sleep can impact personal health in many ways, including: Elevated risk of getting major illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Inability to concentrate or poor decision-making. Putting the body in a state of high alert, increasing the production of stress hormones. Weight gain, eating at times when the body is not accustomed to eating. Affecting skin and other tissue appearance. Poor reaction times, which can lead to accidents. Increased risk of developing mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. While there is no magic number, sleep experts say a person needs between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night to function at his or her prime. If you are having trouble falling or staying asleep, consult with a doctor. Insomnia is very common, and there are different treatment options that can help you get rest. Sleep and work are often intertwined and can impact each other. Because sleep is vital for maintaining health, it’s important to strike a balance so that sleep can be achieved.

Interview with
Sunday, May 27, 2012 - The Morning Star S23
CONFIDENCE A job interview can be a nervewracking experience for applicants. Those who enter an interview with a host of qualifications may still find themselves nervous at the prospect of discussing a position they’re interested in with a complete stranger. When interviewing for a job, there are several ways that men and women, both young and old and experienced and inexperienced, should recognize that interviewing takes some dedication and hard work. Resumes do sometimes speak for themselves, but the following tips can go a long way toward helping job seekers make a strong first impression.
S
ay something before you even open your mouth. Nonverbal communication is an important part of the interview process. Good posture, a firm handshake and making eye contact can set a positive tone at a job interview and makes a strong first impression. When arriving at an office for an interview, sit straight up and avoid nervous behavior such as toe-tapping or checking the time.
B
e a good listener. Many job seekers have practiced what they’re going to say countless times in the days leading up to an important interview. Preparation is important, but it’s just as important to listen to the interviewer throughout the interview. Avoid simply waiting your turn to speak before spouting off a rehearsed
answer. The interviewer is providing valuable information, which applicants should use in their responses to questions.
R
emain professional. Job seekers should always remain professional and avoid coming off as overly familiar. Such an attitude might make it appear as though you aren’t taking the interview seriously and aren’t very interested in the job. It’s acceptable to allow the interviewer to set the tone of the interview, but it’s also important to land somewhere between rigidity and being overly familiar.
B
e specific when answering questions. Applicants must distinguish themselves from one another. When the interviewer asks a question about a past job experience or project, be specific with your answer. Thoughtfully answering a question is always better than spouting off the first response that comes to mind.
A
sk your own questions. At some point during the interview, applicants will be asked if they have any questions for the interviewer. Applicants should always ask questions, which demonstrates interest in the position. Failing to ask a question will likely put an awkward end to the interview. Base your questions on previous statements from the interviewer to show you have been listening and would like to know more about the position and the company.

During recent fashion shows, several designers appear to have been following a similar guiding principal: modernize women’s style with a futuristic look. We saw lots of couture with clean cut lines that conferred a sleek and original look to the women wearing them. With the unveiling of the winter collections, it was impossible not to think of the cheeky Twiggy-era energy that typified the 1960s, when some of the shorter dress lengths evoked the tunic. Also noticeable were the aesthetic influences of Courrèges, who introduced geometric forms to the world of fashion. The fall-winter collection from Bodybag by Jude offers several superb short dresses. Sometimes very simple, their effect is always stunning. These outfits combine the feminine with the enigmatic in superlative fashion.
The fashionable palette this year emphasizes dark tones and monochrome ensembles. Some fashionists love these tones, while others consider the look difficult to wear without more vibrant colours. For them, there are striking fall accents, such as oranges, rusts, and mustards to illuminate the darker tones of brown, charcoal grey, and jet black. This modern style is topped by simple hair arrangements, including 1960s-inspired hairstyles, à la Brigitte Bardot. Alternatively, we will be seeing short hairstyles with clean-cut lines.
Simple, clean-cut outfits combine for an effect that is both feminine and enigmatic. (Photo www.bodybagbyjude.com)

rtin g Your Feet? asy Ways to ase Foot Pain
Flip-flop sandals are staples of a summer wardrobe. However, experts warn this popular footwear can cause permanent damage to the feet and legs. If foot pain is a problem, individuals may have to explore alternative footwear this season. The mainstay of summer wardrobes, flip-flops are the ultimate comfortable, casual shoe. But podiatrists and other experts say that flip-flops may be unhealthy for your feet and legs because of the way individuals must alter their gait when wearing the sandals. Flip-flop usage for long periods of time can lead to sore feet, ankles and legs. The pain can even radiate all the way up to the hips and back. The trouble with flip-flops is that people tend to grip their toes to hold the sandal in place. As such, they take smaller steps and hit their heels on the ground with less vertical force than if they were wearing athletic shoes or other shoes with support. Wearing flip-flops in moderation -namely to the beach or pool side -- and choosing other footwear when a lot of walking will be done is key.
E
Summertime can be brutal on the feet, causing a number of ailments even for those not among the flip-flop wearing masses. Use these guidelines to help ease the ouch. * Wear supportive shoes. If you prefer sandals, look for styles with adequate arch support, straps that keep the sandal in place and soles that will offer good traction. * Stop walking barefoot. Many people skip shoes altogether during the warm weather. This can lead to cuts, stubbed toes and burns on the feet from hot asphalt or sand. If you must walk barefoot, do so as little as possible. * Splurge for a pedicure. Pedicures not only keep the feet looking nice, the process removes dead skin, tames cuticles and massages tired feet. * Keep blisters at bay. Not wearing socks often means putting feet in direct contact with shoes. Use moleskin or bandages to protect points of friction. Also, if the shoe just isn’t comfortable, pass it up. Blisters can quickly become painful and hinder walking.

Successfully Transition To Your Second Career When changing careers, be as flexible as possible. Many men and women reach their 50s and 60s and decide the adventure of a new challenge is simply too hard to resist. Oftentimes, this new challenge comes in the form of a second career. Though it’s difficult to pinpoint how many career changes the average worker undergoes during his or her lifetime. For older workers, the uncertainty lies less in what they want to do and more in if they can pull it off. For those who have already decided what they want to do, consider the following tips to help ensure that dream becomes a reality. Be patient. A successful career change does not happen overnight. Some career changes might require returning to school. Others might not require a new degree but might require an established professional start from the bottom up. Whatever the situation, it’s best to remain patient. If your new career is worth pursuing, be patient enough to see it through. Network. Networking is often seen as an opportunity to advance within your own industry. However, networking can be just as valuable when changing careers. People within your network might be able to introduce you to new contacts outside of your industry. These contacts, even if they don’t have a job to offer, can often provide valuable insight into the industry you’re attempting to enter. Volunteer. Volunteering can prove beneficial in many ways. First and foremost, it provides potentially valuable experience you likely don’t have, and that
experience may help down the road when you begin looking for a full-time position. Another benefit to volunteering is it can provide a genuine look into the industry. This will either strengthen your desire to enter this new field or might encourage you to think more deeply about your pending career change if the field isn’t quite what you thought it was going to be. Finally, volunteering can be a great way to get your foot in the door. Should a position open up, a company is much more likely to consider the man or woman who has been volunteering at the firm than someone they don’t know. Be flexible. In today’s job market, the flexible candidates are more likely to be successful. When changing careers, be as flexible as possible. Determine if relocation is a viable option, and assess your financial situation to determine how much financial flexibility you have. Career changes often come at the expense of a smaller salary. If your financial situation does not allow for a reduction in salary, now might not be the right time to change careers.

Self-employed women diagnosed with breast cancer A breast cancer diagnosis can impact every aspect of a woman’s life. The immediate aftermath of a diagnosis can be nerve-wracking, especially for women who are self-employed. Fortunately, self-employed women can take several steps to ensure their business thrives and continues to generate income in spite of a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment plan. Self-employed women dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis should seek temporary help to ensure their business stays afloat during treatment. Breast cancer treatment can be emotionally and physically draining, so women should allocate some funds for outside help while they are being treated. Do some spring cleaning with business records and files. If hiring temporary help during treatment, be sure that records and files are easily accessible. A financial advisor should be able to help develop a plan to save money while keeping the business afloat dur-

ing the course of treatment. An advisor might offer some insight that helps save money and offer additional tips that help women absorb the financial impact that a breast cancer diagnosis can make on their business. Read the fine print in your healthcare coverage. The cost of treatment could greatly impact your business if all aspects of the treatment are not covered by a health insurance carrier. If not all parts of treatments are covered by an existing plan, consider purchasing disability insurance. This can help selfemployed women avoid using funds initially allocated for their business to pay for treatment. Keep in mind there may be a period of time that has to elapse before payment begins. Embrace a lighter workload. Burning the midnight oil won’t make treatment any easier; it actually could make things more difficult. Be more flexible with work hours and take on a smaller workload, working from home whenever possible.

ilica gel is a desiccant, which means it is designed to draw moisture out of something to keep it fresh. Silica packets are often found tucked into new shoes or handbags, and small pouches of silica gel may be in the vitamin bottles in the medicine cabinet. Silica gel can absorb up to 40 percent of its weight in moisture. It is used to protect items where extreme temperature changes may cause moisture or condensation buildup, which can damage the products. Silica products also may be used to dry out closets or wet areas of the home, such as basements. Containers full of silica gel are used to absorb moisture from the air. Silica gel is also used at some industrial factories or other businesses to help with spill clean-up. The pellets are tossed onto a
What if a packet of silica gel did end up in the mouth? What would be the ramifications? Rest assured that, although the experience may be uncomfortable, silica is not very harmful. If granules of silica gel ended up on the tongue or in the mouth, the product would suck out all of the moisture from the mouth, making it extremely dry and uncomfortable. Chances are there would be attempts to spit it out promptly. Should it be ingested, there could be dry eyes, dry throat, stomach upset, and aggravation of the mucous membranes, according to Discovery Health. It wouldn’t completely suck the moisture out of the body in such a small dose, however. But from a safety standpoint, it can be important to heed all warnings to avoid injury or illness.

Men and women often see it as a chance to build a bigger nest egg and leave a more lasting legacy within their company and community.
• Fewer years to worry about financing your lifestyle.
•Stay socially active.
• More chances to save money. It might be your dream to retire early, but you could be doing yourself a great disservice by ending your career prematurely. Men and women at or near the end of their careers are often making more money than they ever have, which enables them to save more than they have in the past. Take advantage of these high-salary years, even if it means working an extra few years. If you do, when you retire you could have substantially more in savings than you would have had you retired early.
Lezley realizes that believing in Miracles has landed her in a studio nothing short of what has to be hair heaven for her. Each morning she is graced with radiant smiles from her many fabulous clients and friends accompanied with amazing Kalamalka lake views. She believes we live in a world that cares and that we are surrounded each day with incredible possibilities. She believes in St. Francis of Assisi’s quote, that if we start by just doing what is necessary, then doing what is possible, before we know it we will be doing the impossible. She cannot even begin to imagine for a moment not filling her day with the sharing of thoughts and visions that always seem to inspire the manifestation of a “delighted new you“ with an absolutely fantastic style. As much as men and women envision retiring to a faraway seaside villa for their golden years, such retirements are not terribly common, and many older workers have begun to recognize the economic and social benefits of delaying retirement. Those undecided about when they want to say goodbye to the office should consider the following benefits to delaying retirement.
Thanks to advancements in medicine and more and more people living healthier lifestyles, men and women are now living longer than in years past. While living longer, healthier lives is a plus, it does have an effect on retirement. By delaying retirement, men and women will have fewer retirement years to finance.

Many people get the bulk of their social interaction with colleagues and coworkers. When men and women retire, these opportunities for social interaction can dwindle rather quickly, and it’s not uncommon for retirees to battle feelings of isolation. Delaying retirement allows you to easily maintain contact with friends and colleagues, and can lead to a better quality of life.
• The chance to give back. Individuals who delay retirement can use their extra years around the office as an opportunity to leave a legacy for the next generation. This is something professionals find especially valuable as their retirement draws nearer and they want to leave a lasting mark, be it on their company, within their industry or in the community in which their company operates. Delaying retirement provides more time to build this legacy, and can create a greater sense of fulfillment when men and women do decide to retire.

What’s next after retirement? Some people actually want to go back to work. Realize it’s alright not to love retirement. Much of the focus when t planning for retiremen concerns finances. Scores of people spend their working days dreaming of the moment they are eligible for retirement. But many people find that once they retire they do not know what to do to fill their time. Here are some tips that can help anyone ease into the golden years. Establish goals. After working for years, the idea of setting goals can seem counter intuitive. But goals can give life direction and have you looking forward to things in the future. Goals also motivate retirees to get up in the morning now that a commute to work isn’t part of the daily schedule. Donate time or money. Giving back to others, whether to the community or to a charitable organization, can feel good and give retirees some structure. Volunteering your time at a place can give life some sort of purpose outside of a job. Start a home-based business. Just because you retire doesn’t mean you have to fully retire. Now may be the opportunity to start a business ven-

ture you have always dreamed about, whether that is something hands-on or just serving as a consultant. Try new things. Part of goal-setting is to add things to the list you’ve never done before, which can boost feelings of excitement. You may discover a new interest that becomes a passion. Now that you have time to explore new hobbies, they might prove more rewarding. Meet with people. Part of what makes work fulfilling is the opportunity to get out of the house and interact with others who are not members of your family. Let’s Eat! Although these communal “luck of the pot” meals (where everyone brings their favorite dish) hearken back to the late 19th century, they found their footing in the mid-1950’s when it seemed like every mom in the neighborhood was filling casserole dishes for church socials and family get-togethers.
Potluck gatherings are back and one of this year’s hottest trends in entertaining.
Got potluck fever but not a clue what to do? Here are four tips that’ll make your next gathering both tasty and stylish, plus, a family-fave recipe that’ll put your home on the map as potluck heaven.
SIDEBAR:
Organize Participants Divide the meal by categories so guests will have a balance of appetizers, entrees, sides and desserts from which to choose. Cooks needn’t commit to a specific recipe but it’s helpful to know up-front that a well-rounded meal is in the making.

Agree on Advance Prep All dishes should be cooked prior to arrival so only a quick re-heating is required. Everything should also hit your doorstep ready for presentation to avoid last minute searches for serving bowls and platters. Choose Easy-Fix, Crowd-Pleasing Recipes To appeal to guests varying tastes, save the exotic for later and dust off mom’s (or grandma’s) cookbook. Traditional potluck dishes like casseroles, chili, soup, bread, and cakes are always popular and easy to make. Dress Up the Table Remember the special tablecloth mom used for Sunday dinner? Create some memories for your own family with a pretty fabric tablecloth, cloth napkins (pretty and eco-friendly!) and some candles. A few minutes is all it takes to create a festive look that’ll make guests feel honored to have gathered around your table.
Bean Pot Beef Stew
This twist on an American favorite yields a hearty, flavorful entree that takes less prep time because it slow cooks in the oven in a bean pot. Ingredients: 1 lb round steak, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 large yellow onion, roughly chopped 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 cloves garlic, chopped fine 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes 6 cups beef broth (or stock) 11/2 teaspoons dried thyme 3 bay leaves 2 cups potatoes, cubed 1 cup celery, diced 1 cup carrots, diced Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Rub steak with olive oil and coat with salt and pepper. Let steak sit at room temperature in bean pot while preparing all other vegetables. Chop and dice everything, then add to bean pot. Add beef broth (or stock), thyme, bay leaves, diced tomatoes and salt and pepper. Cover and bake in 375 F oven for 3 to 4 hours until meat is tender. *Recipecourtesyofwww.CelebratingHome.com

Shortcuts for Fast Weeknight Meals ost people are busy balancing family life and careers. This can make mealtime challenging. Sometimes it seems easier to go through the drive-through lane of the nearest fast-food restaurant than to spend time in the kitchen. But making dinner doesn’t have to be time-consuming or difficult. Arriving home from work at 6:30 p.m. and then thinking about making dinner leaves many people feeling stressed out. It is possible to create healthy meals the entire family will enjoy with planning and smart time management in the kitchen. Here are some tips that can make for easier meals in a snap. Mark the calendar. Sure it may seem like a page right out of the school cafeteria operations, but planning at least two weeks of meals in advance can alleviate the toughest part of meal creation -- deciding on the menu. This enables a person to shop for all of the ingredients and stock up the pantry and the refrigerator. Come mealtime, it’s simply grab and cook. Prep in advance. Some people like to spend Sunday afternoon pre-cooking items that will be used during the week. For example, one can bake chicken cutlets that can be used for a variety of meals later on. Or slice and dice items so that the preparatory work is done. Package into individual baggies or bowls for later use. Sometimes the longest time spent on meals is the prep work. Take some shortcuts. Not every meal that is cooked needs to be entirely from scratch. Mix fresh-made elements with store-bought options. For example, serve barbecued flank steak with prepared salad greens from your grocer’s refrigerated section and cornbread from their bakery. Consider breakfast foods. Breakfast foods tend to cook faster and with less prep work than others. One night a week serve pancakes, French toast, omelettes, or Belgian waffles. It’s easy and tasty. Invest in a slow cooker. Slow cookers cook food on very low heat for several hours. Many now feature programmable displays so a person can punch in the cook time and the slow cooker will automatically shut off when done. Individuals can

come home after a long day of work and school with an entire meal fully cooked and ready to eat. Stir-fry satisfies. Meats and poultry cut into smaller strips and pieces will cook much faster than an entire steak. Pair this with favorite flavors, such as ginger and teriyaki and seasonal vegetables (fresh or frozen) and serve over rice or noodles. There are dozens of stir-fry recipes a person can create with a little experimentation. Have leftover night. One night of the week can be set aside for leftovers to clean out the refrigerator. Simply reheat and serve, letting each member of the family concoct a buffetstyle meal, featuring a little of this and a little of that. Make-your-own. Foods that involve participation are enjoyable and often fast. Tacos, fajitas, personal pizzas, nuggets and dipping sauces -- all of these options are quick to make and eat. Plus, they get the kids involved in meal preparation. Pastas a plus. A pot of pasta can be boiled in 7 to 10 minutes. In roughly the same amount of time, it is possible to put together a sauce to top the pasta, whether oil and garlic, tomato or something cream-based. Pasta should be the go-to dish when a person is short on time and needs a hearty meal. Cooking for the family during the week can be done quickly and easily with organization and a little knowhow.

Personal health should always take precedence over losing weight to improve your appearance.
It can be sobering to realize that beach and pool season is right around the corner. Maybe that diet you hoped to go on got stuck in neutral. What can you do now? There are some right and wrong ways to shed a few pounds, and here are some guidelines to get you started. Crash diets: Nutritionists have long noted that crash diets can be unhealthy and ineffective with regards to long-term weight loss. But new research disputes

those claims. A recent study from Tufts University found that a slowand-steady diet is only successful for the very few who are not sidetracked by rich foods or other common food challenges in daily life. In fact, they confirm that, if done correctly with a healthy, calorie-cutting, food-based diet, fad diets can produce quick and lasting success. Clinical experience shows that somebody with a serious commitment to weight loss can lose up to 20 pounds -- and two to three dress sizes -- in two months.

YOUR FITNESS GOALS This is not to say you should sustain yourself on grapefruits or cabbage soup. Weight loss that results from such diets is more water weight than fat. Reducing portion sizes and caloric intake could provide a metabolism boost. Exercise: Being active is usually conducive to losing weight. But the right exercises are also key. Heavy manual labor may not be the best route to take, as building muscle could also increase overall weight and add bulk to the body. Cardiovascular and light toning exercises can help many people achieve their weight-loss goals more quickly than dieting alone. Many people find the warm weather naturally inspires them to be more active. Indulge in good foods. Filling up on foods that help your body realize it is full can help with weight loss. These include foods that are high in fiber and protein. Choose nonstarch vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, which are high in fiber. Chickpeas and other legumes will also fill you up fast. Snack on berries and

apples, which are filling and also a good source of fiber. Look for wholegrain breads, which are more substantial than overly processed breads. Set reasonable goals. It is a physiological fact that the human body can only lose a maximum of three pounds of actual fat a week. Other weight loss is often an emptying of the intestinal system and water loss. Starvation is not a healthy way to lose weight, as it actually depletes muscles while taxing the cardiovascular system. Therefore, plan how much you want to lose and then divide that number by three. Then you’ll have an accurate measurement on how many weeks it will take to lose the weight with aggressive dieting. If you want to lose 30 pounds, it could take 10 weeks to achieve that goal. Even a small amount of weight loss can result in marked improvement in how you look and feel, especially when sporting a swimsuit.

Over the years they have seen the real need for more low income housing in the north Okanagan. “Helping the less fortunate, giving them a place to live, and seeing how proud it makes them feel makes us feel good about what you’re doing as well” says Delaney. For the first time ever Diana and Melissa both took a week away from the office to enjoy a week in Mexico to attend Melissa’s wedding to Christian Gauthier. Together with their daughter Kaylee 2, friends and family they enjoyed a beautiful day in the Riviera Mayan to exchange vows and celebrate their wedding. Now settling back into home life Melissa and Christian are excited about moving into their new home. Diana is the mother of two daughters Erin 13 and Cassidy 9 and is married to Kevin for 15 years. Barb Bloomfield It has now been six years since my husband opened D & B Home Fires. The response from the public has been nothing short of wonderful. I always thought that the Okanagan people were awesome but now I know for a fact that they are. Many of our customers have become dear friends often bringing us a Tim Horton’s coffee and visiting with us for awhile. It brings that small town feeling that means so much to us. Aside from working with my husband Dan I love to go fishing at our beautiful lakes, spend time with my horses, work in the garden with my darling sister-inlaw Bonnie and tour the country side on our Motorcycle. Our store offers, installs and services a large variety of wood, pellet and gas stoves and fireplaces as well as furnaces, heat pumps air conditioning. We also specialize in Pellet BBQ’s, something we truly believe in. They are so versatile in that they not only grill and smoke meat and vegetables but they also are ovens that bake yummy pies, cookies, bread, etc. I have one at home and would be lost without it. I am so very proud to be one of the many hard working women in our community and hope to be for many years to come.
