unit on site and to be able to use this provincial resource to ensure it is business as usual at EKRH. The MMU is a stateof-the- art stand alone hospital unit on wheels which will allow for the continuity of patient care in a quiet, controlled environment. The use of the mobile unit is the preferred option to using space in the emergency department at EKRH. The MMU arrives in Cranbrook tonight and will be set up at EKRH Wednesday to house the ICU unit, patients and staff from Monday, May 28th to Wednesday, June 6th. Prior to Monday, ICU and EKRH staff will receive orientation and training, systems will be tested and the MMU will be stocked with supplies. The Ministry of Health purchased the MMU and asked PHSA to maintain the unit, work with emergency response planners, clinicians and other stakeholders from the six health authorities on the development and implementation of an operating plan for its use in the province. Each of the six health authorities in British Columbia contribute funding for the operational budget of the MMU.

It was an action packed weekend with members attending from Wasa, Creston and South Country Clubs. We held our Beef weigh in at Triple Tree Ranch (Salanski’s)on November 6 and weighed in 18 steers and 3 heifers. It was a very successful day and Community Futures was there to present cheques to those that applied for beef loans with them. In December the South Country Club put on a Christmas concert for the Grasmere residents and then went later in the month went carolling. Wasa had a Christmas party that was well attended by all its members In January members started working on speeches and in February both clubs did speak-offs within their clubs. In April the South Country Beef and Sheep members went to Bill Phillips in Grasmere to clip their animals and practice showing them. On May 12 we held our 4-H Rally at Fort Steele Historical Park. Did You Know? .....

Buying from 4-H is so easy! • Buyers do not have to be at the sale (proxy forms available) • You can buy 1/2 beef, swine or lamb (share with family & co-workers) • Prices various according to the animal but generally are from $2.50 - $3.50 cut & wrapped. This is how 4-H continues to educate students and teach them the fundamentals for various animals. For more information please call;

GOLFING IN THE KOOTENAYS

Take the whole family out to the links Submitted What could be better than spending an enjoyable day on the golf course with the people you love? That’s right! Golf is one of the most popular sports for socializing, relaxing, issuing challenges, and getting lots of fresh air, all at the same time! The time is long gone when golf clubs were the privileged domain of business men and

off limits to women! Today, more and more golf clubs offer various packages so that all the members of a family have access to their courses. Many clubs offer annual memberships to couples or families, allowing parents to plan regular rounds of golf with their children. As well as the pleasure of sharing the same passion, golf allows families to spend quality time

together. If the members of your family aren’t all at the same level, playing at an executive golf course (par 3 and 4) will provide a good initiation for beginners and a different challenge to the more experienced. To add a competitive element to a family round, why not change partners from time to time, forming father-daughter, mother-son teams, etc.

A great idea for your next family vacation is to ¿nd a destination where you can enjoy the pleasures of golf together. Travel specialists will be able to advise you about foreign travel packages or holiday resorts which specialize in golf and family activities.

It cannot be repeated often enough: good physical ¿tness plays an important role in even this slow-moving sport. Regular exercise helps with Àexibility, cardio health, and the smoothness of your swing. It will also help you prevent injury to the back, shoulders, and hips. Even simple stretches will help to improve your Àexibility and balance. Don’t hesitate to seek the advice of a professional who will know how to adapt the appropriate exercises for your physical capabilities and requirements. Once golf courses open for the season, it is important to plan several sessions on the practice range in order to work your muscles and regain your rhythm with the iron in your hands. It’s not recommended to make your maiden outing of the season be a full round. Devote your ¿rst baskets of balls to your short game, using your

8 and 9 irons as well as your pitching wedge. Apart from sparing your body, you will master shots of less than 100 metres more quickly. This aspect of the game often makes the most difference on a score card. You can then gradually continue your preparations with longer irons, ¿nishing off with your woods. Always take about ten minutes to do some stretching exercises before each round of golf. And it is wise to plan to spend some time on the practice green in order to improve your concentration. Regular visits to the practice range are always a good idea in order to correct errors or to reestablish your routine. A few lessons with a pro can also be of real bene¿t. Lastly, there is no substitute for playing the course. Invite some friends for a fun, practice round and have a great golf season!

National Transportation Week • May 29 to June 7, 2012

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Keeping Canada moving This May 31 to June 9, members of Transportation Clubs International across Canada will be celebrating National Transportation Week. TCI, a professional association which regroups individuals, businesses, and other transport associations, will be planning events to highlight the importance of the transportation industry to our way of life. Indeed, other than the vegetables we grow in our own backyards, all the goods we consume in our everyday lives are brought to us by any number of modes of transport: electronics by shipping container from China; fresh fruit by air freight from California; ore and lumber by rail from the West; and all of it brought to our local retail outlets by 18-wheeler tractor trailers. Some of the issues advanced by TCI include economic sustainability and fuel costs, logistics and supply chain ef¿ciency, national and international cooperation, as well as education, both within the transportation industry and at large. Many regional branches of TCI will be organizing awards ceremonies to recognize individuals and businesses for their initiatives in advancing improvements to the local industry, for humanitarian efforts related to transportation, and for leadership. For the public, many clubs will be holding essay and poster contests for young people, as well as speakers’ panels to bring the topic of transportation into schools. (May 29-June 7) with a special thought to all the ef¿cient networks that get us our goods every day. Canada’s economy depends on an ef¿cient network of roads, railways, airports, and maritime shipping centres. Both the private sector and the government of Canada invest in these transportation systems to encourage technological developments that will advance the industry. Innovation ensures productivity and competitiveness, which lead to wealth. Innovations include more ef¿cient business practices, improvements in mass public transportation systems, developments in “clean” transportation for highway travel and in cities, and innovative business practices. One new technology that leads Canada a step closer to “clean” transportation is the high pressure direct injection fuel system for long-haul diesel truck engines, developed by Vancouver’s Westport Innovations. With support from Sustainable D e v e l o p m e n t Technology Canada and using research from the University of British Columbia, this fuel system promises to reduce emissions from the long-haul transport trucks that criss-cross the The new system is set to be tested on real trucks on Ontario highways as part of a twoyear trial.

Home Improvement and Renovations What’s about the noise? Many homes include rooms specifically designed for reading. If this room is conducive to relaxation and intellectual activities, what about music lovers or film fans? First of all, it is important to distinguish between insulation and the product specifically designed for soundproofing. The former includes such things as decorative tiles for the ceiling which would only soften any resonance in the room. They do not prevent sound from spreading. Of all the different soundproofing components in a room, acoustic insulation inside the walls is the most impor-

The basics of siding First of all it should be stated that vinyl siding is easy to install. Start by nailing the starter strip on a horizontal furring strip, first ensuring that this is level. Install the corner mouldings, square and vertical and then the J-trim into which the panels are tucked. Cut the panels to size and insert the starter panel in the J-trim, leaving around 0.6 cm of expansion room and driving the nails in horizontally. To make the joints less visible overlap the panels by 1.3 cm and install the panel most in view over the one further away. To finish, nail the roof trim in place then follow the same process under any windows. Calculate the distance from the top of the trim to the preceding panel’s nailing hem and subtract 0.6 cm. After having put the panel in position, draw a line at the junction of the two pieces. Punch dimples along this line at 15 cm intervals with a snap-lock punch, making sure the lugs are on the outside of the panel so they will grip in the trim underneath the window once the panel is fixed into place.

floor joists. After this, drywall can serve to finish the walls as well as to reinforce the soundproofing effect. As a last step, draught proofing tape, specifically designed for acoustics, should be used. Sound can be transmitted through even the smallest of cracks, between the frame of a door and the framework of the wall as well as

the floor. It is important

Week is held every year. This thematic week, organized from June 3 to 9 this year, spearheads a multitude of awareness campaigns also held in June. Canadian Environment Week helps raise public awareness of the importance of the fight against climate change and of the reduction of atmospheric pollution. This week coincides with World Environment Day, a global event held every year on June 5. This day was founded in 1972 by the United Nations. Over the same time period Clean Air Day (June 6), which aims to raise public awareness of climate change and the importance of cleaner air, World Oceans Day (June 8), Rivers to Oceans Week (June 10 to 16), as well as the Commuter Challenge (June 3 to 9) will also be held. The latter event invites people to leave their cars at home and use more eco-friendly forms of transport, such as walking, cycling, carpooling, or public transportation. Such a concerted effort, focused on environmental awareness and spearheaded by Canadian Environment Week, can only be beneficial to society as a whole. All we have to do now is to put into practice the many ideologies promoted during this busy start to the month of June!

Renewable energy When the time comes to think about replacing heating or electrical equipment for a cottage or a principal residence, many environmentally friendly options are now available. For consumers who would like to be more energy ef¿cient, many sources of energy are derived from renewable resources. For a source of energy to be qualified as renewable, it must be able to regenerate or be renewed naturally over a period of 20 to 50 years. Some of these resourc-

es include solar, geothermal, bioenergetics, wind, marine current, and tidal energy. Not only are these energy sources renewable, they are largely pollution free. They also have small carbon footprints, meaning that they don’t contribute to the greenhouse effect by adding carbon dioxide to the atomosphere. The profitability of these new energies is closely linked to the price of a barrel of crude oil: the higher the price of the barrel, the more profitable the new ener-

gies, and the more mainstream they will become. The exploitation of renewable resources will help in job creation and minimize our impact on the environment, even if initially it involves higher costs for consumers. As oil prices climb higher, however, these higher costs will become relative and a concerted effort to switch to renewable sources of energy will be economically justi¿able. The choices we consumers make today will guide government priorities and policies. It is our responsibility to think

about such things carefully, as we stand at

the dawn of an energy revolution.

Making dining out just a little bit easier It is now easier than ever to make healthy choices when dining out with the recent launch of the Province of British Columbia’s Informed Dining program. Featuring more than 300 restaurant outlets in British Columbia, the program publishes nutritional information and allows diners to view the information in a format similar to that of a nutritional guide on products at the grocery store. All you have to do is look for the Informed Dining logo at participating restaurants. “British Columbians have made it clear they want information to help them make informed choices about what they and their families are eating,” says B.C. Minister of Health Mike de Jong. “With Informed Dining, we are partnering with B.C. restaurants to help make the healthy choice the easy choice.” Some of the participating restaurants include chains such as The Boathouse, De Dutch, A&W and Little Caesar’s, and stand-alone restaurants such as H.A.V.E. Cafe in Vancouver, Mountain Eagle Books in Smithers and Joseph’s Coffee House in Victoria. With people in British Columbia eating a meal in a restaurant approximately 10 per cent of the time, it’s never been more important to be able to source out healthy options. With the new program, calorie and sodium information is prominently highlighted for all regular menu items, while other nutrients, including carbohydrates and fat, are also noted. The program also gives advice on daily calorie and

Excess weight can increase the risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and various cancers, so caloriecounting is an important part of a healthy diet. Eating too much sodium contributes to high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and kidney disease, making sodium another important piece of the healthy eating puzzle. “Healthy eating is a critical element in living a long and healthy life and avoiding cardiovascular disease,” says Gavin Arthur, vice-president of research and health promotion for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. “The Informed Dining program takes a positive step forward in providing people with information they can use in making informed choices while dining out.” The program is voluntary, but the provincial government is

encouraging every restaurant to join the initiative and make such information available. “We want to be part of the solution in making healthy choices, easy choices in B.C.,” says Vice-President of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association Mark von Schellwitz. “This program has the potential to help restaurant patrons become more conscious about what they are eating – it also shines a light on those establishments already providing menu nutrition content while encouraging other restaurants to follow suit.” The provincial government has been working on this program since 2010, and has given restaurants several options for disclosing nutrition information, including a menu insert, a poster or a brochure. “I am proud that we have about 300 outlets across the province signed up to participate in this important program,” says Ian Tostenson, CEO and president of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association. “I know that other business will continue to learn more about Informed Dining and sign up – this information is what our customers have been telling us they want, and it is our responsibility to provide it.” The initiative is part of the Healthy Families BC campaign, created by the Province to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic disease. For more information, visit www. healthyfamiliesbc.ca/home/informed-dining. The website also features a contest with weekly draws and a grand prize to cook like a chef and learn from a dietitian.

Just look for the Informed Dining logo at participating restaurants and ask your server for nutrition information to help you make healthy choices from the menu. You can now be confident when eating at participating restaurants that you’ll have access to nutrition information before you make your menu choice. Stop guessing...and start asking!
