Kootenays’ Best Singer gears up for competition BY BREANNE MASSEY Times Staff

Chasing the dream to be a singer is a bit like chasing your tail. On Thursday night the chase begins as the Kootenays’ Best Singer Contest comes to Greater Trail and, for some, it’s a chance to earn recognition for their art. The contest aiming to dub Trail’s best singer takes place on May 31 at the Charles Bailey Theatre, 4-8 p.m., one week after the event landed in Rossland. “Following the … contests, the top two singers from each event will advance to the Kootenays’ Best Singer Championships to be held in Cranbrook on June 23,” said producer Vern Gorham. “The winner of that contest will win a prize package worth about $5,000. “This prize package includes $1,000 cash, plus studio time to do an original song, and a music video of that person singing their song.” Previously the contest held tryouts for candidates in Grand Forks, Nelson, Creston, Cranbrook and Kimberley. But last Wednesday the contest took place in Rossland at the Miner’s Union Hall. But Gorham was eager to see what the candidates could bring to the competition in Trail. Auditions in Trail took place on May 15 and Gorham was pleased by the turnout. “The audition in Trail was private, kind of a pre-judging so to speak, just like on American Idol where the singers perform privately to the judges,” he said. “The talent in Trail is amazing.” Tickets for the Charles Bailey Theatre event are available for $10 each. McEwan honoured with lifetime achievement award BY BREANNE MASSEY Times Staff

Being able to coach more than 100 kids at once is a serious commitment. But coaching those kids as a teenager is an even bigger accomplishment and it was only the start of a series of triumphs for a Trail native. Next week Bill McEwan is being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Retail Council of Canada in Toronto for his outstanding work within grocery stores. Now the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Sobeys Inc., McEwan earned the lifetime distinction for being a serious role model, an icon in the industry, and one who has dedicated his

career to retail. He started working as a bag boy and moved his way up to merchandising, and 40 years after he started he became the president and CEO of Sobeys Inc. McEwan’s rise and the lifetime award didn’t surprise his father, Tom. “Bill had leadership qualities as a boy, you could tell,” he said. “When he was about 17 or 18, he was the coach of the Stingrays (swim club) and he had almost 100 kids. “If you can deal with that when you’re that age, then you’ve gotta have some leadership skills.” Bill began working in grocery stores while he was still a student at J. L. Crowe, and by the age of 20 he became a manager in a gro-

cery store located in Castlegar. He learned the fundamentals of business from Ferraro Foods in Greater Trail, later working in Nelson, but Tom credits his son’s most prized characteristic in handling those he works with to being raised in Trail. “He’s a people person,” said Tom. “I think that being raised in small town is a little easier for youngsters because they get to know everybody at whatever soci-economic level and I think that’s a great thing for young people here. “We didn’t want (him) to care whether (his) friend’s fathers were janitors or vice presidents or whatever, so Bill is very much a people person.”

Dr. Colleen Kramer owns and operates the All Kootenay Equine Veterinary Service, but her practice also handles other, non-equine animals like Otis, a Newfoundlander.

Colleen Kramer has always been surrounded by horses. Raised on a farm, she started showing horses at an early age. It was only natural when, after she graduated from veterinary school, she would open up her own practice with a special emphasis on equine care several years later. Kramer owned and operated the All Kootenay Equine Veterinary Service for more than a decade, but in January, she began to diversify her practice. “We’re now Beaver Valley Clinic and we’re one of the few mixed animal practices in the Kootenays, said Kramer. “Now we’re seeing all animals. We provide medical services for dogs and cats, or horses and lamas. We take the mobile unit to see bigger animals. It didn’t take long for Kramer to realize that a veterinarian in a small community needs to

cater to a wider demographic than equestrian needs. “The one thing that’s a little bit difficult in a small area is having enough backup, said Kramer. “You’re on call no matter what. Kramer began making upgrades to a clinic to outfit to serve a wider range of animals, providing a complete care package. Kramer and her colleague, Dr. Emma Davis, are now equipped to care for big and small animals. “There are certain species, say a lama or alpaca, and there may not be anybody else in this area that has a background to treat them, said Kramer. “We can. The clinic caters to a number of species and now it’s able to offer day surgeries and digital X-rays, along with Bowen Therapy treatments that benefit animals with arthritis problems. Double after a redouble Penalty Doubles Takeout doubles are usually doubles at the one or two-level, higher if opponents pre-empt, while the following doubles are for penalty: 1. Doubles made by doubling over and not doubling under; 2.A double made by your partner when you have already told him your hand (1NT or a pre-empt does this); 3. A double after one’s partner has already answered (by a bid not a pass) a takeout double; 4. A double made when the partnership knows they have the balance of power; 5. LOCAL COMMUNITY IN BLOOM

GETTING HIS DUE

Committee digs in for Communities in Bloom competition BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff

Over the next few weeks there will be hangings and plenty of pot action in Trail’s downtown. Hanging baskets and potted trees, that is. Around 170 hanging baskets and nearly 100 potted trees will be strategically placed in the Silver City’s downtown core — and throughout the Gulch — as part of the Trail Community in Bloom committee’s next attempt in the international Communities in Bloom competition. The local committee has already had shovels into the ground as the city prepares to hold onto its five-bloom status and go up against international competition in this year’s challenge. This year Trail is in “really tight,” said committee president Dan Rodlie. “We are competing in the largest category, competing against 10 other cities from Japan, the Czech Republic and England,” he said. “Every year you get more and more countries entering.” The city dropped marks — down to 82.75 per cent — in last year’s international challenge from it’s national competition in 2010, reflecting about a third place finish, said Rodlie. This year marks the 10th anniversary the city has participated in the program, holding a max record of five blooms for eight of those years. Part of the preparation will include new projects: planting hostas around the coniferous trees near the Trail Bridge; work on the white garden (a re-creation of the beautiful Sissinghurst Castle Garden in England) at the end of the Esplanade; and revamping some garden beds. The committee is also embarking on a “massive” undertaking at the turnoff to Muriel Heights. Using a piece of Regional District of Kootenay Boundary property, the committee will be developing it into a grassy bed comprised of a variety of four- to eight-foot-tall grasses. “So when trucks and everything drive by they will be waving in the wind at them,” said Rodlie. All of the work is now underway, with some or all of the over 100 volunteers being called upon before the Communities in Bloom judges arrive July 12-14. The committee is still looking for people to donate more hostas to place under the trees near the bridge. People can donate by calling 368-9227.

McEwan’s industry accomplishments extensive FROM PAGE 1 McEwan spent 13 years with the company in British Columbia and Alberta. He held a variety of senior marketing and merchandising roles in the consumer packaged goods industry with Coca-Cola Limited and in grocery retail with A&P both in Canada and the United States. He served as president of A&P’s Canadian operations before his appointment as president and chief executive officer of the company’s U.S. Atlantic Region, the position he held immedi-

ately prior to joining Sobeys Inc. in 2000. “Over his 40 years in the industry, Bill’s visionary leadership, driven by his passion for the grocery business, has inspired all those who have had the opportunity to work with him,” Diane J. Brisebois, president and CEO, RCC said in a recent press release. “His business success is only exceeded by the inspiration and influence he has had on the countless individuals he has worked with throughout his career.” Bill also played an active

leadership role in a number of industry and charitable organizations and was recognized as National Volunteer of the Year by Kids Help Phone in 1999. Tom concluded that Bill was never somebody who would brag about himself, but that others—often his wife or daughter—would gladly do it for him. In fact, Bill’s daughter had to send Tom an e-mail to inform him about her father’s latest achievement. Previously, Bill has also received the Golden Pencil , the Canadian grocery indus-

try’s highest honour, and the Robert Beaudry Award of Excellence for leadership in the grocery industry. “I wasn’t really surprised,” said Tom. “Bill has very special talents.” The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes senior executives with a minimum of 25 years of work. Tom said that Bill’s got about 40 years of experience and he’s only 55. Bill will be presented with the award on June 4 in the Toronto Congress Centre.

Conservation program expands to West Kootenay BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star

A group that coordinates conservation efforts on private land is expanding its reach to both sides of the Purcell Mountains. The East Kootenay Conservation Program — soon to drop the East from its name — has already been working in West Kootenay for the past few years, according to program manager Dave Hillary. “It’s evolved to the point where people are saying you should just have one conservation program, regardless of whether it’s East or West Kootenay,” he says. “We’ve got more ties that bind than differences.”

The program’s chief goal is increasing private land conservation to protect species and landscapes, but it is not a land trust itself. Rather, it finds willing partners for specific projects. Hillary says they were involved with the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s purchase of the Darkwoods forest on the south shore of Kootenay Lake in 2008, and the province’s acquisition of the Valhalla Mile on the west side of Slocan Lake in 2009, in partnership with the Land Conservancy of BC and Columbia Basin Trust. “That was really a request from the Trust to help them understand and prioritize how

important that project was in the scheme of everything else,” he says. “We’ve played that role historically and will continue to play it in a more meaningful and formalized way now.” Hillary adds the Trust is supporting them financially as they prepare to double their service area and potential partners, which presently number more than 50 — including other non-profits, forestry companies, and all levels of government. The program boasts more than $100 million in conservation investment on over 300,000 hectares of high value land since 2002.

It has supported 28 projects over the last two years. While the name change won’t take effect for a few more months, Hillary says the “philosophical underpinnings” for the expanded organization are already in place. “The reality is we’re changing the name and geographic scale of the operation, but the demands have always been in both East and West Kootenay.” Hillary will be also moving from Invermere to Nelson in July, which is as much a personal decision as a program decision.

Liberals try to corner NDP on ‘Dutch Disease’

Family Day holiday added in February

THE CANADIAN PRESS

BY TERRI THEODORE

VICTORIA - Western premiers are expected to roundly condemn Thomas Mulcair’s position on resource extraction when they meet this week, but B.C.’s governing Liberals are finding there might be something to love in the federal NDP leader’s controversial statements. The B.C. Liberals, badly lagging behind the provincial NDP in the polls a year before next May’s provincial election, introduced a resolution in the legislature Monday clearly aimed at painting the opposition into a corner. “Be it resolved that this house unanimously reject the position stated by Thomas Mulcair that resource extraction in western provinces is bad for Canada,” stated the motion, introduced by Liberal Bill Bennett, who sits on the party’s re-election committee. “We support resource extraction because of all the great jobs that it provides here in British Columbia,” Bennett told the legislature. “I’m trying to be as sensitive as I can because I’m trying to be as fair as I can to the Opposition.” NDP house leader John Horgan initially balked at having the motion debated, but later said Mulcair’s argument had been repeatedly misrepresented. Mulcair has suggested Alberta oil exports raise the value of the Canadian dollar, which in turn hurts the economy in other parts of the country. The phenomenon is dubbed “Dutch Disease” - a reference to the manufacturing decline that occurred in the Netherlands after a boom in natural gas exports in the 1970s. Mulcair immediately came under vigorous criticism from the federal Conservatives, who have accused him of pitting east and west. Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall has also had harsh words for Mulcair and Alberta Premier Alison Redford has said she won’t meet with Mulcair until he visits the Fort McMurray region to educate himself about the oilsands. That visit is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Bennett said B.C. created 20,000 new net jobs last month because the government is pro-development and pro-trade. “This is a glorious opportunity for the Opposition to stand and explain what their policies are on resource extraction and disavow themselves from the statements made by their federal ruler.” But the NDP noted Premier Christy Clark has been silent on the development of the Enbridge Northern Gateway expansion, although Redford and the federal government have touted it as a nationally important project.

Education Minister George Abbott makes good on suggestions that a new contract could be imposed over the summer. Abbott says he would be ready to act if a government-appointed mediator can’t reach a deal with teachers before June 30. Lambert responds by saying the union has a court-mandated order

VANCOUVER - Dust off the skis, get out the toque and find the hiking boots - B.C. officially has a holiday in February. Family Day will now fall on the second Monday of every February starting in 2013, fulfilling a promise made by Premier Christy Clark even before she became the premier. “So mark your calendars, it’s a day to spend with your family,” Clark said smiling. “It’s a day to spend with all the people that you love, doing something that you love, hopefully right here in British Columbia.” Clark, who made her announcement at Vancouver’s Aquarium while the whales did a beluga ballet in the background, said Family Day would be a great day to spend on the ski hill, in the park for a walk or at the local community centre. “One of the things that I know is that its not true that it’s the quality of time that you spend with your family, it’s actually the quantity that matters too.” Sherry Sinclair, a board member of the B.C. Association of Family Resource Programs, said the announcement is a cause for celebration. Her organization supports thousands of families in B.C. through almost 270 resource programs. “I can assure you that this is more than a holiday or a day off,” she told the gathered crowd and media. “It’s a day that values the broad diversity of families in this province and their hard work and dedication.” The Tourism Association of B.C. said in a statement the holiday provides a good opportunity to reinforce the message to stay and play in B.C. B.C. now has 10 statutory holidays each year. Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan also celebrate Family Day, while the February holiday in Manitoba is Louis Riel Day and Islander Day in Prince Edward Island. However, not everyone is thrilled with the extra holiday. B.C. Conservative MLA John van Dongen said the government announcement won’t create a single job, and in fact would likely cost jobs. “A new stat holiday will be another overhead cost for the business community,” he said in a news release. “With an average cost of $1,135 to small business with fewer than five employees, small businesses are already struggling.” The government delayed the implementation of the holiday by a year because they recognized the economy was fragile, but the economy is recovering, Clark said. “We’re going to be able to create a big economic impact that we otherwise wouldn’t have, for the tourism sector, for the retail sector, for the recreation sector. I think there is going to be a big positive impact of it as well,” she told reporters. The government chose the day after one of the largest web-based polls ever conducted by the province

Investigators probe double slaying in restaurant THE CANADIAN PRESS BURNABY - The man and woman found fatally shot in a Vancouver-area sushi restaurant weren’t linked to gangs or drugs but rather were the victims of a “cold and callous killing,” the RCMP said Monday. on the floor, said Sgt. Jennifer Pound. Officers who arrived found the bodies of a man and a woman. The man was identified as Huong (Andy) Tran, 36, of Burnaby, while the woman’s name wasn’t released. “We can say both victims are not known to police and an investigative priority is to determine the motive for this cold and callous killing, ” Pound said.

NATIONAL Flaherty says economic recovery remains fragile Vets advocate revives THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says the Canadian recovery is fragile and vulnerable to shocks either from Europe or from a national rail strike. The finance minister says the Canadian government is doing what it can to shelter the economy from being affected by the European debt crisis.

Flaherty says the European situation is especially worrisome because Canada depends on trade that could be be damaged if the eurozone crisis spreads. He says it’s also important to avoid an internal economic shock that could occur if there’s a lengthy strike at Canadian Pacific Railway.

Harper gov’t orders end of CP Rail strike

The finance minister’s comments follow remarks from Labour Minister Lisa Raitt, who says it’s necessary for Canadian Pacific trains to start rolling again. Raitt said Canada’s reputation in international business is at stake, and CP Rail’s business has an impact of half a billion dollars a week on the Canadian economy.

IN SUPPORT

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says the government must act now to end a strike by 4,800 Canadian Pacific Railway workers in order to preserve the country’s international reputation. The Harper government is tabling back-towork legislation, the third time it has intervened in a labour dispute in similar fashion in the last year. “Simply put, the strike can’t go on, Raitt told the House of Commons on Monday. “We need to get the trains running again. She said Canada’s reputation as an international business partner is at stake, and that CP Rail’s business affects a million workers in the bulk shipping industry and has an impact of half a billion dollars a week on the Canadian economy. “The work stoppage is preventing our ability to keep products moving in and out of Canada and that undermines Canada’s reputation as a reliable place to do business, said Raitt. Mediated contract talks between the railway and the Teamsters union representing locomotive engineers and conductors collapsed Sunday. Raitt gave notice of intention to intervene shortly after last Wednesday morning’s walkout halted CP’s freight service across Canada, setting the stage for Monday’s intervention. The union says the company is demanding up to a 40 per cent cut in the earned pensions of employees, after making a $570 million profit last year. “We’ve spent out entire careers paying for this, contributing to this and relying on this, Doug Finnson, union vice-president and chief negotiator told a news conference on Parliament Hill. “And because the shareholders want increased value, they want to squeeze it out of our pension plan and then put it over to the shareholders. The labour unrest comes amid front-office turmoil that saw CP’s chief executive officer Fred Green and much of the old company board forced out by an investor revolt, led by New York-based investor Bill Ackman of Pershing Square Capital Management LP. The departing CEO, who Ackman accused of running an underperforming company, ended up walking away with an $18-million severance package, a point dryly noted by Liberal House leader Marc Garneau. Opposition critics say the Conservative government’s heavy-handed use of back-to-work legislation is undermining the right to collective bargaining and will hurt the wages of all workers, unionized or not. “If employers know they can count on the government to intervene on their side to put an end to collective bargaining, then there’s less need for them to have good-faith negotiations at the bargaining table, said Peggy Nash, the NDP finance critic and a former union negotiator. Added the Liberals’ Garneau: “The whole process of collective bargaining in good faith is brought to a grinding halt. The government does this every time. Raitt, as she has done with previous labour disputes at Air Canada and Canada Post, cited the damage to the economic recovery for quickly legislating an end to work stoppages. The government says a prolonged strike by CP Rail workers could cost the Canadian economy $540 million a week.

Collins opposes students calling clubs “gay-straight alliances THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - The Archbishop of Toronto issued a stinging attack against the Ontario government’s anti-bullying bill Monday, after the Liberals announced students must be allowed to name anti-homophobia clubs “gaystraight alliances. “Trustees and principals are legitimate stewards of the spiritual tradition of the school, and in a Catholic school that includes the Catholic faith tradition, Thomas Cardinal Collins said in a statement. “Why should the power of provincial law be used to override that legitimate adult authority so that this one particular method can be imposed by any student who wants to do so? When the legislation was introduced, the Liberals said Catholic schools must allow anti-homophobia clubs but gave principals the power to veto the name gay-straight alliances. Education Minister Laurel Broten said Monday she changed her mind after hearing from students who don’t want her or principals and trustees dictating the names of

their clubs. “We know that words matter. The message that we’re giving to Ontario students today is you will be listened to, it’s your club, Broten told reporters. “The premier and I were both very clear that it was not for us at Queen’s Park to tell them what the name of their club should be, but neither should it be for someone else sitting in some other office in the province to tell them what the name of their club can’t be. Cardinal Collins,

who is also president of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario, said “it is not helpful when Queen’s Park moves in to give students control of an issue instead of trustees, and warned other religious groups they could be targeted. “Please consider the implications for all when legislation is enacted that overrides the deeply held beliefs of any faith in our province, and intrudes on its freedom to act in a way that is in accord with its principles of consciences, he wrote.

privacy war with over ‘whitewash’ report THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA - A veterans advocate has complained to the privacy watchdog about an internal report that largely exonerates federal bureaucrats who spread around his personal medical information. The Veterans Affairs investigation into Sean Bruyea’s case has revived questions about how seriously the Harper government has treated breaches of privacy of ex-soldiers. Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart concluded almost two years ago that the use of Bruyea’s medical information in two 2006 briefing notes to former veterans minister Greg Thompson broke the law. However, an outside report commissioned by the department found no “malice or “fault in the actions of bureaucrats and senior department officials. The report noted that Bruyea’s medical information was stitched into several other notes that were not part of the privacy commissioner’s investigation. Bruyea, who described the report as a whitewash, says his privacy was violated once again because the consultant had full, unfettered access to the briefings. He says no one from Amprax Inc., headed by a former senior bureaucrat Alain Jolicoeur, contacted him for either permission to view the material - or for input into the report. “I certainly ... never would authorize an individual like Mr. Jolicoeur who has an extensive background as a senior bureaucrat which places him in a conflict of interest in assessing whether his peers broke the law, Bruyea said in his letter to the privacy commissioner. “In authorizing this investigation and releasing unprecedented large amounts of my personal information to Mr. Jolicoeur, it is apparent that senior officials grossly and flagrantly broke privacy laws in order to solicit a report which would justify their breaking of those same laws in the first place. (Veterans Affairs) has crudely attempted but failed to justify the unjustifiable. The Amprax report, presented to former veterans minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn in December 2010, said some bureaucrats involved in mishandling the information had retired. Bruyea noted that some of the bureaucrats were among dozens who received nearly $700,000 in performance bonuses in 2011, instead of being punished. 5)& ,005&/":n4 05& &/":n4 0/-:

ith ongoing pipeline and oil tanker skirmishes, and a hot summer for mining and logging still to come, the green war in B.C. shows no signs of slowing down. Things are already hot in the Fraser Valley, where the federal government’s change to the definition of fish habitat has opened a new front on the farms. Farmers briefly got into the public discussion by hauling a couple of cute calves into downtown Vancouver and staging a television-friendly demo in front of the federal fisheries office. They have been saying for decades that imposing salmon stream regulations on drainage ditches around their fields is impractical. Fraser Valley Conservative MPs Randy Kamp and Mark Strahl even had the nerve to meet with local mayors to hear their concerns about B.C.’s most productive farmland, with-

out inviting self-appointed “activists.” Arrayed against them is an environmental lobby whose deep green wing was defined by Marvin Rosenau, a former provincial biologist who now teaches “fish, wildlife and recreation technology” at BCIT. “Mark Strahl is leading the charge of eco-fascists intent on making the last dime off the backs of the last remnants of an absolutely spectacular ecosystem,” Rosenau told the Chilliwack Progress. “A massive and productive floodplain of fish and aquatic values … has been drained, ditched, tiled and laser-leveled for agricultural profit.” The same could be said for the broad fields of Richmond and Pitt Polder farms north of the Fraser, a wetland diked and drained by Dutch settlers after World War II. Farms are “industrializing the landscape,” said Rosenau, who stopped short

TOM

FLETCHER B.C. Views of calling for them all to be shut down. At the provincial level we have a new Animal Health Act, which threatens heavy fines or even jail time for prematurely leaking reports of serious animal disease outbreaks. This was also portrayed as a jack-booted sellout of the public’s right to know, putting the business interests of land and ocean farms ahead of public safety. Here’s what’s really happening. As is generally the case with meat inspection and livestock issues, the federal government is

imposing rules on provinces in the wake of avian flu and “mad cow” outbreaks. Canadian beef was banned in 30 countries after a single infected cow was identified in Alberta in 2003. B.C. Agriculture Minister Don McRae assures me this legislation will not result in reporters or environmental activists being thrown in jail for telling the public about sick animals. They and the farmers themselves can say all they want, once infections are confirmed and quarantines established. McRae and Paul Kitching, B.C.’s chief veterinarian, pleaded for the public to understand that any farm reporting system must rely on voluntary compliance by farmers. When the B.C. government took the advice of B.C. Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham and began releasing fish farm inspection data in 2010, the operators stopped providing samples

voluntarily. The fish farmers’ position was that you can have a co-operative system of farm inspections or one that’s imposed, but not both. Imposing inspections on land farms across B.C.’s vast area is even less practical. Former Alberta premier Ralph Klein famously observed that the next rancher to find a possible mad cow should have “shot, shoveled and shut up” rather than file a report and devastate the industry. Denham, the NDP and others appear to operate under an assumption that there should be sufficient government resources to sample and inspect every farm across B.C. for reportable contagious illnesses. This is similar to the fashionable notion that we should have enough park rangers to guard every cedar tree. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews. com

TV LISTINGS ‘Scam City’ shows con artists targeting tourists THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - It’s enough to make a wary traveller want to stay home. Currency exchange scams, taxi gangsterism, short-changing tricks, pickpockets and clip joints, all targeting tourists in Prague, are highlighted in the first episode of the new series “Scam City” on Travel and Escape Network, starting June 3. There’s even a woman who scrapes plaster off a wall and markets it on the street as cocaine and heroin. The 10-part first season, hosted by U.K. author Conor Woodman, also travels to Rio de Janeiro, Marrakech, Rome, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Istanbul, New Delhi, Bangkok and Las Vegas. Woodman, who used a hidden camera in the button of his shirt to reveal con artists’ tactics, says tourists are “soft targets for the waiting scammers” in some of the world’s biggest tourist destinations. Prague, he says somewhat melodramatically, is “full of history, romance, culture - and trouble.”

LETTERS/NATIONAL LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Two views of pesticide ban To the Editor: Re: Premier bitten by pest problem (B.C. Views, May 19). The editorial on cosmetic pesticides written by Tom Fletcher skates around the body of medical and scientific evidence linking these toxins to such illnesses as childhood leukemia and Parkinson’s disease. In his words, the “right thing to do is to do nothing about cosmetic pesticides. I imagine if he were living in the sixties, he would be arguing that the Vietnam War was the right thing to do, or in the seventies that concern over the nuclear arms race was merely “political. The problem with cosmetic pesticides, like DDT or cigarettes, is that there is no smoking gun. It is going to take time to convince some people that pouring poison on their lawn could harm their children. In the case of Mr. Fletcher, I think it will take a lifetime. I pity his children. Jim McMurtry, Surrey

To the Editor: I enjoyed Tom Fletcher’s column on the hysterical reactions to any chemical use. With regard to Roundup, this compound is a very specific inhibitor of an enzyme unique to photosynthesis. Therefore it affects only photosynthesizing organisms, typically green plants. It has even gone through phase one clinical trials (which test safety for humans) because there was some idea that it might help with arthritis. No such luck. In other words, you could drink the stuff with no ill effect. When Oak Bay council proposed banning all “pesticides including Roundup, I wrote them pointing out these facts. To no avail; they just went along with the herd, and copied the type of ban that Saanich has. Well, keep up the good work of speaking truth to ignorance. It might eventually help. THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - The majority of Canadians are in debt but nearly half of them are trying to pay off their dues ahead of schedule, according to a survey conducted for a major bank. The study, commissioned by CIBC, found that 72 per cent of respondents said they held some form of debt such as a mortgage, student loan or credit card. However, about 49 per cent of those responding to a phone survey conducted for CIBC said they’ve made an extra lump sum payment in the last year to

try and bring down what they owed. “Debt management is top of mind for Canadians, and these poll results show that many Canadians are taking steps towards reducing their debt, said Christina Kramer, CIBC executive vice-president of retail distribution. The bank said the results show that Canadians are focused on reducing their debts amid warnings about rising household debt. The Bank of Canada and some economists have warned

that Canadians are piling on too much debt while interest rates are low, and some may no longer be able to afford their homes when interest rates rise. CIBC said that while the findings show many Canadians are conscious of debt management, past research has suggested that most are likely to seek out advice about retirement planning before they pursue financial guidance on their debts. The phone survey was conducted by Harris-Decima from a poll of 2,003 Canadians between March 22 and April 2.

Canadian business travel up in Q4, fewer foreign visits: StatsCan THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says Canadian business travellers made more trips abroad during the fourth quarter of 2011, although foreign business travel to Canada was down. The agency says Canadians made just over 807,000 overnight business trips outside the country in the quarter, up 4.0 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2010. Of these trips, three-quarters, or 600,000, were to the United States, a 4.7 per cent increase. Canadian overnight business travel overseas was up 2.0 per cent. In the opposite direction, however, overnight

business travel to Canada declined 2.1 per cent to just over 570,000 trips. About 70 per cent of these trips were made by U.S. business people, although American business travel to Canada was down 2.1 per cent. Foreign business travellers spent $588 million in Canada in the fourth quarter, while Canadian business people spent just over $1 billion abroad. Canadians made 3.8 million overnight pleasure trips abroad in the fourth quarter, up 3.7 per cent from the same period in 2010. Foreign travel to Canada for pleasure, however, fell 6.6 per cent from the United States and 4.9 per cent from overseas nations.

Same old song: Do musicians ever get tired of their own hit tunes? BY NICK PATCH THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - New York indie-pop outfit Fun set the world on fire with the No. 1 single “We Are Young.” But months after it topped the charts, no one would blame the trio if the tune had them feeling a little burnt out. After all, even those among us who celebrated the song’s glam grandeur and ceaselessly contagious chorus might have tired of its crescendo - “set the world on FI-YA, FI-YA!” is a hook hefty enough to reel in a white whale - once the track achieved supermarket-stereo ubiquity. So how would you feel if you performed the song every single day? For their part, however, the members of Fun say they’re still having a ball each and every time they take the stage to perform their signature hit. “That’d be really dumb on our part to get tired of it,” frontman Nate Ruess said during a recent interview in Toronto. “Watching the way people react (when we play it) makes it hard to get tired of it,” added guitarist Jack Antonoff. “Not to sound like a total cheesebag, but when you see people get excited and go, ‘Oh my God, this is the song that I’ve been singing for a long time’ - it’s cool, because we were those people at one point.” But of course, they are young. While they’ll rarely admit it publicly, many artists reluctantly concede that over time, performing their biggest hits night in, night out can wind up feeling like a chore. And the reasons for that weariness are numerous. Sometimes, the sentiment of a song written years - or even decades - before will no longer resonate, or a band will simply change its mind about the value of a tune. The setlist resource website setlist.fm, for example, tracks 510 instances of R.E.M. performing “The One I Love” between 1986 and 2008, compared with only one recorded occasion on which they saw fit to perform “Shiny Happy People,” a chart hit that was poorly regarded by critics and even bashed by Michael Stipe himself. In other cases, a band will feel it’s outgrown the stylistic hallmarks of a major hit written in the fledgling stage of its career - consider Radiohead, the British rock innovators who almost never tackle their breakout blast of jagged angst, “Creep,” in front of an audience anymore. And sometimes, of course, artists just get plain tired of playing a song. “1234” represents Toronto-based songstress Leslie Feist’s biggest hit to date, but you could count on one hand the number of times she performed the jaunty tune on her most recent tour. It becomes hard when a song endures over decades - how many times, for instance, has Sting pleaded in falsetto to turn on that red light? “I’ve sang ‘Zombie’ so many times that

I actually feel like a zombie,” Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan has joked, referencing the band’s impossible-to-kill 1994 single. “We’ve been doing our old hits for so long, you feel like you’re stuck in a loop or something, so with new material you feel very much alive.” The catch-22, of course, is that the vast majority of audience members at a given show are most primed to hear those trademark tunes - sometimes, those songs are the only ones familiar to casual fans enticed into buying a ticket by fond memories of a major radio hit. And artists stubbornly refusing to give the crowd what they want can sound a bum note. As a result, it doesn’t take long for some artists to grow to resent the very songs on which they’ve established their careers. “It does have to do with the expectation that (your hits) are going to be in a show, and that people are buying their tickets expecting to have those songs included,” said Ottawa-reared singer/ songwriter Bruce Cockburn in a recent telephone interview. “And if you don’t include them, there’s dissatisfaction, so there’s pressure around it. And that’s what creates the distaste for (playing the hits).” It’s probably not hard to guess which songs Cockburn has intermittently soured on. There were times when he probably would have liked to blow up his 1984 tune, “If I Had a Rocket Launcher,” but it was actually 1979’s “Wondering Where the Lions Are” - still the only hit he had in the U.S. - that really made him snarl. “I got to really hate that song after a while,” he said. “And then I just let it lie for ... a period of years where I really didn’t perform it, or hardly ever did, and it came back. And I enjoy it now again.” Indeed, that’s the most common cure for hit fatigue - spending some time apart. Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy grew understandably tired of performing the Toronto band’s 1987 breakthrough “Try” - its refrain, “oh night after night/ Oh it’s crazy,” took on different meaning after reaching for those high notes on every show on every tour. “I got sick of that song so bad for a while. After about five years, I went: ‘Oh my God,”’ Cuddy said with a laugh during a recent interview. So, he and “Try” went on a break. “And now? I love it. It’s fun. It forces you go to the top of your range, the bottom of your range. It’s simple. So now I don’t think I’ll ever be fatigued with that song.” Former Barenaked Ladies singer Steven Page said his old band similarly rested early hits “Brian Wilson” and “If I Had $1,000,000” for tours at a time - but it was a necessary step to ensuring the band’s performances remained sharp.

JUNIOR GOLF

Youth wins out at Redstone 14-year-old nabs his first junior title BY JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor

A young but very deserving golfer won the most recent stop on the West Kootenay Zone 1 junior circuit as it hit Redstone Resort in Rossland on Saturday. Twenty-eight juniors teed off, but it was

Braden McKay 14-year-old Braden McKay of RosslandTrail Country Club (RTCC) who came in with the low score of 80 on the day. Despite near perfect conditions, the scores were all fairly high. McKay played consistent golf throughout and finished the front nine with the lowest score of any player. He managed to keep his ball in play and his 3-over par back nine was still good enough to hold on and win. It was McKay’s first ever overall Junior Circuit win. Braden’s brother Tyler made a charge, birdying six holes in a row at one point, but three double bogies and a triple would seal his fate. Tyler managed to take third spot shooting an 83, one stroke back of MacKenzie Field of Chirstina Lake who shot an 82 for the win in the 17-18-year-old division. The tournament also

proved to be a qualifying match to see who won the right to tee off at the B.C. Summer Games in Surrey in July. Four U16 players are eligible to qualify, provided they have not played in the Summer Games tournament before. In the qualifying round Carson Arcuri (Granite Point), Ryan Fullerton (RTCC), Trevor Browell (Champion Lake), and Shawn Ellard (Kaslo) all earned spots. Shawn actually defeated Aiden Browell in a playoff to earn the fourth spot. Alex Rugg and Garrett Underwood both shot 85 good enough for a tie for second behind Field. Tyler McKay was first in the 15-16 year division, Fullerton placed second with an 89 and Trevor Browell third. In the 14- and-under division, Arcuri took first shooting an 84, Jackson Konkin (RTCC) was second with a very solid 88 and Aiden Browell placed third. In the net division Ellard was first overall in the 15-18 category and Jeff Ashton from Castlegar was first in the 14 and under division. Aiden Browell from Champion Lake and Ryan Page from RTCC both won closest to the pin, and Jeff Ashton and David Launier won long drives in their respective divisions. Next up is the Johnny Bucyk championship at the Creston Golf Course, a 72-hole event with a 36-hole qualifier on Saturday, where 60 per cent of the field will make the cut for Sunday’s round. The Johnny Bucyk championship in Creston will be separate from the Junior Circuit but will run the same weekend as the Creston junior circuit event.

The Trail Jays were just missing on Sunday as they dropped their North Idaho American Legion baseball conference opening season double header to the Northeast 49ers at Butler Park on Sunday. The Jays lost the first game 15-5 before coming up short in the second half of the double bill, 6-4.

KOOTENAY RUGBY UNION

Colonials routed in Rogue assault BY TIMES STAFF In Kootenay Rugby Union action the Trail Colonials suffered a setback as they bowed to a formidable Cranbrook Rogues side on Saturday at Upper Sunningdale Park. Prior to Saturday’s match, all three teams had a record of 1-1, as Nelson shocked Cranbrook 46-21 in Nelson on May 12. Cranbrook showed up overconfident and undermanned

in that game, and were determined not to make the same mistake twice. On Saturday, the Rogues showed up with a considerably stronger side. Conversely, the Colonials fielded a team that lacked experience at important positions. “The plan was to play a territorial game because of the matchup and Bryan (Lauzon) kicked for yards every chance he got to start the game,” said

Colonial spokesman Ryan Molofy. The ploy succeeded in keeping the Cranbrook side at bay for the first 20 minutes. Trail even had a chance to take the lead off a penalty kick but it flew wide. “Over the course of the first half, we were constantly on defense due to Cranbrook’s ability to create overlaps and that started to wear us down,” said Molofy.

The Rogues capitalized, scoring two trys by halftime. But with the game getting away, tempers began to flare. The Colonials lost a player to a red-card and the Rogues lost some players to injury as both teams played shorthanded. In the second half, it was more of the same. Cranbrook dominated in the lineouts, winning almost all of them.

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE

Kootenay Ice axe head coach Knoblach CRANBROOK TOWNSMAN The Kootenay Ice have relieved head coach Kris Knoblauch of his coaching duties announced Jeff Chynoweth, the president and general manager, in a press release on Friday. No reasons or comments for the move were mentioned in the release, which said the Kootenay Ice club has “terminated Kris Knoblauch’s contract effective immediately.” Phone calls to the Kootenay Ice office, Chynoweth and Knoblauch weren’t

returned by Friday afternoon. This is the first termination of a head coach in Kootenay’s 14-year history in Cranbrook. It has been rumoured that Knoblauch was interested in pursuing a job in CIS hockey as head coach for the University of Alberta Golden Bears—the same institution where he played as a player—and that he is shortlisted with four other candidates. He still had one year left on his contract with the Ice.

Knoblauch’s assistant, Todd Johnson, also left the Ice franchise in April, taking the reins of the University of Regina Cougars. Knoblauch has spent six years in the WHL in a coaching capacity, first as an assistant under Peter Anholt in Prince Albert for a year and three under Mark Holick with the Ice. When Holick left for the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch, Knoblauch took over the helm of the Ice, guiding the team to its third WHL championship.

MEMORIAL CUP

Knights fall in valiant effort THE CANADIAN PRESS SHAWINIGAN, Que. - There was a point in the 2011-12 season that the London Knights weren’t sure whether to buy or sell at the Ontario Hockey League’s trade deadline. Their decision to add Austin Watson and Greg McKegg to their young team paid off, as the Knights not only won the OHL title, they were a goal away from taking the Memorial Cup. The Knights lost 2-1 in overtime to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Shawinigan Cataractes in the championship game on Sunday night. “That’s a heartbreaker,” said Knights defenceman Scott Harrington. “We battled all night and came out really strong. We might have let up a little bit in the second period and gave them some momentum. “All-in-all it was a fantastic season on our behalf and I’m really proud of all of our guys. Knights coach Mark Hunter was pleased with the play of his team in

the loss. “We didn’t give them much. In the second, I thought (Shawinigan) had a little bit better period and in the first I thought we did,” Hunter said. “In the third, I thought we had better chances than them then in the overtime they had a couple better chances than we did.” The Knights entered the game having been off since beating Edmonton in their final round-robin game on Tuesday night and earning a direct berth in the tournament final. Shawinigan, meanwhile, was forced to beat Edmonton in the tiebreaker on Thursday and Saint John in the semifinal on Friday to advance to Sunday’s final - and that came after wrapping up the round robin on Wednesday night. “We weren’t really sure what to expect. We knew they would be coming hard. We played well in the third period and overtime but that’s just the way that it goes,” said Harrington.

LEISURE

Sister is mean and nasty because she is jealous Dear Annie: My sister-in-law, “Kate,” has a son who is a year older than mine. For my husband’s sake, every time Kate comes to town, I tell her she’s welcome to stay with us. Kate doesn’t always behave herself. I try to blow off her offensive comments, but it’s hard. My husband says, “My sister is stupid. Don’t let her get to you.” But her last visit was the final straw. She asked whether my 2-year-old son is “normal” because he has a big head. Annie, he looks like his father, who is tall and broadshouldered. So is my brother, who played high school sports. She asked this repeatedly, and each time, I calmly told her that his pediatrician says he’s perfectly fine. Then she had the gall to ask my husband whether our son was actually his. Kate also will make nasty remarks such as, “Did you serve bad bacon? It tastes funny,”

or “You don’t wash your floor. It’s sticky.” I’d love to tell Kate exactly how I feel about her rude comments, but I know the consequences won’t be worth it. I already ignore her phone calls and reply only by text. I’m tired of crying to my husband over Kate’s nasty behavior. I can tell that he is getting irritated with me. What do I do? -- Ready To Explode in N.D. Dear Ready: First, stop complaining to your husband. It’s tiresome and accomplishes nothing positive. Instead, learn better ways to handle Kate. When she complains about your sticky

floors, reply, “Oh, I’m so sorry. Here’s a mop.” If she dislikes the food, smile and tell her, “Sorry I can’t make what you like. Feel free to do the cooking.” When she insults your son’s size, nicely say, “He’s so athletic looking, like his father and uncle.” The trick is to remain wonderfully polite, sweet and perfectly innocent while you drive her nuts. It might help to understand that Kate says these things because she is jealous. We feel sorry for her. Dear Annie: Please publish this letter to my friends and relatives who do not own computers: I don’t mind helping you, but there are rules: I am not going to research a term paper for your child. If I have printed out information, please store it wisely. I may not have saved it to the computer I am currently using. If you have access to the Internet, please

look things up yourself before asking me. A dear relative recently became angry when I told her I no longer have the family tree information she wanted, nor did I have time to re-create the file. Also, paper and printer ink are expensive. I do freelance writing and editing and need my supplies for that. It would be nice if people would reimburse me for some of the expense or buy a pack of paper once in a while. -- Computer Geek Dear Geek: You ought to attach this letter to any work you do for others so they understand your rules. Those who ask for favors should not expect you to pay for the privilege. Dear Annie: “Lost My Appetite” better get used to being around diabetics unless she plans to lock herself up in the house forever. Type 1 diabetes is an epidemic, and

people with the disease aren’t going to wait to eat. They need to time their insulin precisely. Doing it in the bathroom doesn’t always work because some bathrooms are disgusting and many don’t have a counter to put

your supplies on. I think her friends will be thankful that “Lost” stays home. -Sterling, Mass. Dear Sterling: We heard from a great many diabetics who took issue with “Lost’s” position. Watching

someone inject insulin is not pleasant. However, when one has close friends or family members with diabetes, it requires that you put a lid on your sensitivities. Otherwise, simply show up later.

LEISURE

YOUR HOROSCOPE By Francis Drake For Wednesday, May 30, 2012 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Zip thy lip; for sure, think before you speak today. It’s so easy for little arguments with others to break out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Squabbles about financial matters or possessions might arise today. These might be about social occasions, vacations or money spent on children. Romantic partners also might quibble. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Today Mercury is in your sign and at odds with fiery Mars. This means everyone is in an argumentative mood, including you. Do your best to keep the peace. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Because you feel mentally frustrated today, you can channel this energy into some kind of research. In other words, use your

determination to dig for the answers you want. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Stay calm and patient in group situations today to avoid upsets with others. It’s almost impossible to get agreement in any meeting you might attend. Just accept this. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Definitely avoid combative situations with bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs (also the police). People are just looking for a fight today. Run away! Run away! LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Touchy subjects like politics, religion and racial issues will trigger arguments today. If you want some peace of mind, avoid these topics. It’s a good day to discuss the weather. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) This is a poor day to settle on matters about inheritanc-

es, shared property, insurance matters and anything you own jointly with others. People will just nitpick the silliest details! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Be extra patient with partners and close friends today to avoid ugliness. It’s in your best interests to get along with those who are closest to you, isn’t it? (The answer is yes.)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Relations with co-workers and people at work are testy today simply because everyone is argumentative. Therefore, avoid dicey subjects. Keep your head down and your powder dry. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Romantic quarrels are likely between lovers today. Those involved in sports might have fights. Parents will have to be

patient with their kids. It is what it is. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) To keep the peace at home today, be patient and tolerant with family members and especially parents. Anger only makes everyone miserable; that is its only function. YOU BORN TODAY Routine always stifles you, because you need freedom of action. Because of this, freelancing is a good choice for you. Renowned environmentalist Suzuki to speak in Kootenay region INVERMERE VALLEY ECHO Dr. David Suzuki is a leading scientist, one of the world’s most influential environmentalists, and an award-winning broadcaster with 27 honourary degrees and more than 50 books under his belt. He also happens to be speaking to a sold-out audience in Invermere on June 1 at the Invermere Community Hall. Presented by Wildsight as part of the organization’s 25th anniversary, Suzuki was invited to the Columbia Valley on the condition he would have to give a talk. He’ll be speaking about the global impacts of the current economic paradigm in his presentation entitled: The Challenge of the 21st Century: Setting the Bottomline. The following Q&A is the transcript of that conversation, edited only for length [Editor’s note: Dr. David Suzuki’s views are his own and not the opinion of Black Press]. Valley Echo: How do people balance feeding their families and job security with their concern for

the environment? David Suzuki: Our problem is that we have now given over the economic agenda to corporations. Corporations are not people. Corporations don’t give a damn about employment, a corporation — not to survive but to be more profitable — will lay off a thousand people if they can hire or build machines to do it. We don’t have any emphasis in our system on the absolute essential aspect of creating jobs. All we care about is creating more corporate profit. This is totally screwed up. But corporations are now setting the agenda, and so, in the name of efficiency, it makes more corporate sense to have fishermen concentrated in a few gigantic boats that can take vast amounts of fish out of the ocean, and abandon the thousands and thousands of small boats that employ three or four people... We are told that the way for economic salvation is globalization, reduction of barriers, and so on. So what does that mean? Globalization gives corporations greater profit margins

4HE ,OCAL %XPERTS™

Dr. David Suzuki but it sure doesn’t do anything to assure security of jobs because globalization means companies go to where you have the lowest, the lowest salaries, the lowest environmental requirements, the lowest medical support, the lowest of everything because that’s how you make more money!

a lot closer to nature than we are in the city. Farmers know very well that seasons, weather, climate, winter snow and the summer moisture and the soil, insects and pollination, they know about that stuff and they know damn well that nature affects whether or not you’re going to survive from one year to the next. But in a city... I have a friend who lives in the northern end of Toronto, who lives in a high rise apartment, fully air conditioned. He drives to his office downtown in an air conditioned car, that office is air conditioned and connected through tunnels to shopping malls and food markets. He told me he doesn’t have to go outside for weeks. So who needs nature when you live in that kind of a world? So the people who live out in less populated areas should have a closer connection to nature. Unfortunately, they’re also caught up with the need to have iPods and computers and Nike boots and all that same stuff, they need an income to live in those areas even though they may be more connected to nature.

VE: About the urbanization that you say is undermining our species and the big city living‌ DS: No, I don’t say it’s that that’s undermining it, it’s the mindset in an urban setting that is our problem. In a city, you live in a human created environment, where you can easily think, ‘Well as long as we have parks out there somewhere for us to camp and play in, who needs nature, we create our own habitat.’ If you live in a city, your highest priority is your job, because you need your job to buy the things that you want, and so in a city the economy becomes the most obvious priority because our connection to nature becomes much less... Our kids today in the cities are spending the least amount of time outdoors of any generation in human history. So for a child like that, nature becomes something scary and you don’t value it then. VE: How do people in more rural areas, like the Columbia Valley, have an advantage over people in the city? DS: Well, for one thing, you’re
