The many faces of Granville Island By Shawn Conner
I
t’s an overcast Saturday afternoon on Granville Island, and kids are playing in a pile of sand. Families stand around in clusters, and children hold helium-filled blue balloons. But this isn’t a playground. It’s the front yard of Ocean Construction Supplies, the concrete company Granville Island visitors pass by on a daily basis and seldom think twice about. Yet the 90-year-old company has long been a fixture on this plot of land. And every spring for the last 14 years, Ocean Construction Supplies has opened its gates to give people the chance to learn more about wet-batch concrete than they probably thought they wanted to know — and to remind us that Granville Island isn’t just about dining, drinking and dropping off the kids at the Adventure Zone. “They [other Granville Island businesses] like having us here,” Ocean Construction maintenance planner and unofficial spokesperson Stephen Bell tells us, raising his voice to be heard over the continuous blast of kids pressing on air-horns. “We do advertising, and we keep the traffic moving.” The concrete mixing trucks do indeed keep the traffic moving. “The trucks at Ocean go in and out every day, and the drivers are probably the best drivers down here,” says Scott Fraser, Granville Island marketing and communications officer. And with the drums of some of its concrete mixer trucks decaled with fruits and vegetables to advertise the Public Market, the vehicles are a unique addition to the city’s sights. Ocean Construction Supplies is a holdover
from Granville Island’s early days. At one time the area was home mostly to industry, but in the post-Second World War years many of its factories were decimated by fires and the area fell into disrepair. The federal government began redeveloping the site in the early ‘70s. The idea, according to the Granville Island website, was to “transform the site into a people-friendly place with various uses, from parkland to housing to public exhibition space.” Since opening to the public in 1979, the island has lived up to its mandate. Besides
COVERSTORY heavy industry like Ocean Construction Supplies and manufacturer Micon Products, Granville Island boasts a brewery (Granville Island Brewery, the province’s first microbrewery) and an artisanal sake maker (the only one in Canada). There is a strong naval element including a dock, whale-watching tours, marina, kayak rentals and fishing charters. Potters, weavers, textile artists, printers and jewelry makers work in studios that once housed foundries and machine shops. And of course, icons like the Public Market and Emily Carr University of Art + Design have become synonymous with Granville Island. The art school was in the news recently when the Ministry of Advanced Education gave the university $1.7 million to develop a business case for expansion. How this will affect Granville Island’s delicate eco-system remains to be seen, although the school owns one building on the island and is leasing another.
Barry Patterson, director of communications for Emily Carr, told WE via email that the school is working on a campus expansion project at Great Northern Way, where the institution already has the Master of Digital Media program with BCIT, UBC and SFU. The expansion “is to address the shortage of space we face at the Granville Island campus which was originally built for 800 students,” writes Patterson, who notes that the school has been on Granville Island since 1978. “The current space is in need of upgrades and repair. We now have more than 1,800 students every year and no residencies… “Once we have determined if we are to proceed with GNW expansion we will address options with the Granville Island campus.” He adds, “Granville Island is an important part of our history and however we proceed in the future it will be done thoughtfully and with consideration.” The school is indeed as much a part of the island’s makeup as Ocean Construction Supplies and the Public Market. Blue-collar workers, art students, shoppers and tourists all contribute into making Granville Island “one of the world’s great places” (according to the New York-based nonprofit Project for Public Spaces). With its unique mix of arts, culture, industry and education, the site has stumped city planners from all over the globe who have scouted out the island in an attempt to find out what makes it tick. For Ocean Construction’s Bell, it’s the sense of community that he likes

most about working on the island — something that might sound odd when applied to a place known as a tourist destination. “I walk
around the island, I see everyone I know. It’s a nice sense of community. I don’t mind having tourists here — I just have to watch tour buses don’t block our gates.” Bell says that as far as he knows, Ocean Construction is a fully accepted part of that community; he hasn’t heard anyone object to the presence of a concrete plant in their midst. “I haven’t heard of any controversy and I haven’t come across any myself. Everyone seems to like us here – we’re part of the history and the living heritage of the island.” On the afternoon of the Ocean Construction Supplies open house, I pause on the way to the cement plant. A young woman with a guitar begins singing a familiar-sounding melody. I soon realize the song is Steve Earle’s Copperhead Road. As the busker builds to the chorus, the uniqueness of Granville Island — a place I’d always taken for granted — strikes home. Here I am on the way to a cement plant; after that I’ll go to the market to pick up some fresh fish for dinner. Now, however, I stand with several other people, listening to the song’s tale of redemption and reclamation.

Glee actor hands over the limelight to at-risk kids As a troubled teenager, Cory Monteith found redemption in acting. Now he wants to give back to the woman who helped launch his career by Emma O’Dea
I
f someone had asked a teenaged Cory Monteith what his life would look like 2012, it’s safe to say that he probably wouldn’t have guessed being famous — for an especially good reason. A high school drop-out who was leading a life filled with drugs and criminal behaviour, he was struggling to figure out who he was and what others thought of him. He settled for being the “bad kid”, even prompting his family and friends to hold an intervention for him when he was 19. His lowest point came when he was caught stealing significant amounts of money from a family member in order to fuel his drug addiction. Given the choice to go to jail or get help, Monteith chose the latter. He moved to the Vancouver Island city of Nanaimo, taking on a series of odd jobs in order to begin rebuilding his life. His first break came when he entered a small acting studio run by Maureen Webb, who, struck by his potential, encouraged him to pursue the art. Monteith had always been interested in music rather than acting, particularly drumming, and decided to take her advice. Never would either of them have guessed what was going to happen. Monteith, who recently “graduated” as a star of the hit TV series Glee, has remained devoted to his roots and loves coming to Vancouver whenever
he gets the chance. On his most recent trip to the city, he arrived with a bigger purpose than just visiting. As an ambassador of Sir Richard Branson’s non-profit sector of the Virgin Group, Virgin Unite, Monteith accompanied Branson in announcing donations to two local youth organizations, Broadway Youth Resource Centre ($25,000) and Project Limelight ($26,500). Monteith has publicly supported Project Limelight since its launch in January 2012. The project was founded by Webb, Monteith’s former mentor. As dozens of young children from Project Limelight’s performing arts programs sang and charmed an audience of photographers and newscasters at the East of Main Cafe last Friday, there was no one prouder than Monteith, standing at the back of the room with a smile on his face. He knew exactly the kind of excitement these children were experiencing and has become a role model for many of these at-risk youths. Project Limelight’s youth performers will be presenting their production,”Wonderland”, this Saturday, June 5, at the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre at SFU Woodwards. “Wonderland” brings together singing, pantomime, comedy, dance and audience participation. There will be 2pm matinee and a 7pm evening show. Who knows — maybe we’ll get to see the next Cory Monteith in the making.

New rules of engagement Federal legislation pushes Living Oceans Society into “adversarial position” By Susanne Martin
K
aren Wristen has taken over the helm of the Living Oceans Society just when it’s headed into turbulent waters. The non-profit society is the largest Canadian organization that focuses exclusively on marine conservation, working with the federal government to create domestic legislation. But this climate of cooperation changed when the government pushed ahead with the Enbridge pipeline project. And, at a time that could see an exponential increase in tanker traffic, the oils spill response team has been drastically reduced. “[It] leaves us with very few avenues to cooperate. It puts us in an adversarial position that wasn’t our choice.” Wristen adds that it’s only possible to “work with a mature and responsible government that is actually interested in solutions.... “There should not be any oil tankers in our marine protected areas.” Wristen’s new task is raising awareness about the Northern Gateway project and tanker issue. “We’ll work in coastal communities around BC to let people know what to expect,” she says. “We’ve done a lot of good work already. We have expert reports that deal with marine safety and ecosystems protection and we’ve built an oil spill model that is running on our website.” This comes at the heels of the federal government’s decision to disband local oil spill response teams. “The reason given by the minister of envi-
ronment is cost saving,” Wristen says. “But without the team to coordinate local response, there will be no ability to tell responders about local conditions. They won’t know where the clam beaches are or where the salmon spawn. Without the local knowledge, the navigational risk to a ship in distress is huge.” This makes the job of the spill operator trying to clean up and salvage a ship very hard, Wristen says. In order to operate in Canadian waters, a tanker is required to hire a company commissioned to do the clean-up as part of the insurance. “When the spill happens on the central coast, for example, the operator may be dispatched from an urban centre and has no ability to get detailed knowledge of the local environment. Environment Canada had a team made up of representatives from local communities and that has been cut in terms of number of staff. And the office has been relocated to Gatineau, Quebec. “[Canada] didn’t do a great job with oil spill response before the cut, according to a report of the auditor general’s report in 2010,” Wristen adds, and with the potential increase in tanker traffic, this protection is needed more than ever. The former executive director of was Jennifer Lash and she “built the society into an incredible science-based organization.” As Wristen gets ready for a “different kind of playing field,” Lash is running the tar sands campaign. “We’ll plan the future differently,” says Wristen who divides her time between Living Oceans’ Vancouver and Sointula offices. But she stresses that the society still pursues avenues of collaboration, for instance with the provincial government. “We’ll collaborate wherever we can. It will probably be hard trying to inject some common sense into the federal environmental policy but if you don’t believe it’s possible, you might as well hang up your gloves and go home.”

Contemporary art explained Josephine Meckseper: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;American Legâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; opened last week at the Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson), and will continue until Sep. 2. For her first exhibition in Canada, Meckseper creates eight new works in the street-front window vitrines of the CAG, exploring the relationship between politics and consumerism, central to her work. Sharing the gallery until July 1 is the first Canadian solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Matthew Monahan. With their battered, weathered surfaces and contorted, fragmented bodies, Monahanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s figurative sculptures and drawings evoke artifacts from another time or era. Coming soon, the CAG presents a survey of film and sculptural works by Dublin-based artist Sarah Browne, including the artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entry for the 2009 Venice Biennale. ShopTalk Sophia Danai catches Collective’s eye Local clothing retailer Lifetime Collective has teamed up with Vancouver-based singer/songwriter Sophia Danai for a summer shoot featuring some of their favourite pieces from the Women’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection (available for sale at select retailers across Canada and online at Lifetimecollective.com). Sophia Danai caught the attention of Grammy award-winning producer, Chin Injeti, widely known for his work in the hip-hop world (Eminem, Clipse, 50 Cent and Drake), and while one might not find the connection likely, Sophia says it was a chance to create the music she imagined and to explore new horizons. As WE mapped out in a March editorial feature on the company, Lifetime is known for collaborating with up-and-coming local artists across all genres, but the artists also have to be pushing their own boundaries to catch the attention of the fashion collective. Fresh off the runway Last week Joe Fresh showcased the successes of their SS12 runway collection. Satellite Gallery’s porcelain perspective Elegant Disorder: Perspectives on Porcelain is a group exhibition at Satellite Gallery (560 Seymour) featuring contemporary artists Paul Mathieu (instructor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver), Sin-Ying Ho (instructor at Queen’s College in New York City), Shelley Miller (Montrealbased artist whose installations, sculptures and public works have been exhibited across Canada as well as in India and Brazil), Elizabeth Zvonar (who recently appeared locally at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Contemporary Art Gallery) and Brendan Tang (who has exhibited at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal as a 2010 Sobey Finalist, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Power Plant). Running until June 23, this exhibition engages with the history of porcelain—in particular, contemporary expressions of the blue-and-white motifs reminiscent of Chinese Ming Dynasty wares.

The Second Coming of Finch’s in Strathcona OnThePLATE By Andrew Morrison
T
here’s much to adore about Finch’s Tea & Coffee House on West Pender, starting with its beguiling good looks. Its debit card terminal and the mixed modern fashions of the clientele are the only things within eyeshot that would suggest that one was comfortably seated in the 21st century. The rest is straight out of Churchill’s England, only there are no ration cards or menacing Heinkels flying overhead. The eight-year-old day-time charmer has always leaned convincingly on this 30’s/40’s aesthetic, but not in a sham way. It’s so convincing that one half expects to find a well-thumbed first edition of For Whom The Bell Tolls left behind at a table or some Vera Lynn seducing from an especially raspy gramophone. I wrote of its attractiveness in a review a few years back, and though I’m not in the habit of quoting myself, the words still apply: “It’s a small space, with about 20 chairs in total, but each table seems its own little world. Over the years I’ve probably sat at them all, but the choicest seats are at the three window tables of two, all incubated from the rest on raised platforms and semi-shielded from the street by neatly tied curtains. They’re like little peripheral pods: perfect for quiet conversation, reading, or idle day-dreaming. The old hardwood floors give it a solid base of creaky character, while the dozen or so leafy plants, the dilapidated state of the ancient walls, and all of the aged cabinetry, mirrors, light fixtures, and various bits of ephemera lend it an open-faced honesty.” And then there’s the food: a simple assortment of red-leaf salads and a dependable daily soup anchored by a collection of baguette sandwiches, one of which is widely considered one of Vancouver’s “must-eats”. It’s a lovely number of sliced pear, prosciutto, blue-brie cheese and roasted walnuts spritzed with oil and vinegar. The flavours and textures fuse and resonate gently but beautifully (more piano than fortissimo), and those who partake in its joys seldom forget it. (If it had a musical score, it would be Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in D). And as good as it tastes, it looks even better. The makers are exacting in their artistry, so every sandwich looks as if it’s been prepped by a food stylist for a glossy magazine photoshoot. Truly, it’s one of those
rare edibles that equally consumes its devourer. But as I mentioned, I wrote about it for these pages several years ago. It’s not my intention to repeat myself. The reason that Finch’s is in my wheelhouse again is because its owners, Jamie Smith and Sheryl Matthews, have just picked up a second space at 501 East Georgia in Strathcona. That’s at the end of my block, so you can imagine it’s like getting advance warning that a lost Matisse is about to make an appearance at the garage sale next door. Until last month, the address had long housed an awful victualling station called U-Go-To Store. My family nicknamed it “I’d-Rather-Not Store”. Smith and Matthews are replacing it with something called “Finch’s Market”. The concept is similar to the original Finch’s (we can expect much of the same menu, including teas, coffees, and the sandwich of legend) but with a strong fresh food market component leading the way. That means lots of local produce, retail foodstuffs from small and independent suppliers, housemade curries, meat pies, fruit pies, Beef Wellingtons, Knickerbocker Glories, custards, and so on (continuing with the Brit theme). They’ll even be making their own ice creams and popsicles. Smith grew up cooking in the old blethering place pubs of Somerset where there were always freshly-shot pheasants strung and a strong sense of community (he only just got his Canadian citizenship last month). Such an upbringing goes far in explaining his period tastes in food and design. A life-long tinkerer, he is infatuated by solid craftsmanship. “I’ve been poor and decadent all my life,” he told me during a tour of the new space last week, “so I’ve had no choice but to be creative and resourceful.” He’s building Finch’s Market largely on his own. His hands will see to all the demolition, plumbing, flooring, and painting. He’s even doing all the carpentry, too (chairs, benches, tables, counters, etc.). Virtually everything within will be handmade, excepting the antiques, which he will have personally restored. Naturally, all of my neighbours are justifiably excited about it. We (and the city at large) have to wait until September until its finished, but no matter. Good craftsmanship takes time, and I suppose that if Finch’s Market is to be any good, it should take time. It goes without saying that it will be well worth the wait, and so we wait with the original to tide us by.

eeks are versatile. Here are two recipes from the gang at the Vancouver Farmers Market to prove that point.
CRISPY DEEP FRIED LEEK ROOTS Inspired by Paul Healey, Hannah Brook Farm, this works especially well for long roots from bigger leeks. Cut off the roots and rinse well under cold water. Let dry on a clean towel. Pour vegetable oil into a medium pot, about 2 inches deep, and heat over medium-high heat, until about 350º. Slowly drop leek roots into oil and fry until golden brown. Let drain on paper towel. Season with sea salt while still hot. Use as a garnish for soup or enjoy as a snack. LEEK CONFIT By Roberta LaQuaglia, operations manager, Vancouver Farmers Market 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 large leeks (white and light green parts), halved lengthwise, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick halfmoons 2 tablespoons water, plus more if needed

1/2 teaspoon salt Heat butter and oil in a large pot over mediumlow heat. Add leeks; stir to coat. Stir in water and salt. Cover pot; reduce heat to low. Cook until leeks are tender, stirring occasionally, about 25 minutes. Uncover and cook for 3-5 minutes to evaporate excess water. Store in the fridge for up to a week. Spread on crostini with goat cheese, add to scrambled eggs, quiche, stews or soup. ’d always had it in the back of my mind that I’d like to make a wine in the Okanagan one day. I’ve had no illusions of giving up the city life in favour of small-town living in the valley, but the idea of having a hand in making just a barrel of something really floats my boat. The opportunity ended up landing in my lap way sooner than expected. When I was wrapping up my tenure running Gastown’s Salt Tasting Room a couple years back, I was fortunate enough to be named Sommelier Of The Year by the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival which, besides being very encouraging as I leapt into the world of freelance consulting, was something that put me first in line for a new opportunity. My friend Christine Coletta is a partner in a winery in Summerland called Okanagan Crush Pad, a customcrush facility where those without a winery step in and use their equipment, or let OCP’s talented winemaker, Michael Bartier, steer the ship. It has a few of its own brands (Haywire, Bartier-Scholefield) but its position as a playground for budding winemakers is really making it an exciting new force in British Columbian wine. Christine had an idea to create a “Wine Campus” series, where each year’s winner of Sommelier Of The Year will have the opportunity to

New chef, management team at Establishment Lounge Victor Bongo has made a name for himself as a chef who challenges culinary standards by incorporating flavours from different ethnic backgrounds. Shop at Granville Island market with this cookbook as your guide by Martha Perkins
W
hen the Granville Island Public Market opened in 1979, it was one of the few places in Vancouver that was allowed to open on a Sunday. Vancouver’s foodie culture was also in its infancy. By offering fresh produce and food products from around the world, the market got people wondering what to do with such a cornucopia of ingredients. That’s when Judie Glick and Carol Jensson came to the rescue. Judie and her husband Fed were among the first businesses in the market, Fraser Valley Juice and Salad. Jensson wasN’T far behind with her Blue café. Together they wrote The Granville Island Market Cookbook, a must-have for many amateur chefs. Now they’ve come up with a new version that’s just as chock-o-block full of recipes for nearly every product you can find at the market. They also tap into the vast wealth of knowledge of the men and women behind the market’s counters. Since Vancouver is blessed with its abundance of seafood, we turned to The New Granville Island Market Cookbook for some ideas on how to cook salmon. First Glick and Carol offer advice on how best to grill the fish and then a recipe for just one of the ways to prepare it. The New Granville Island Market Cookbook is published by Arsenal Pulp Press and is available both at the market and at bookstores throughout Vancouver.
the thickest point. The fish should be opaque and the juices should run clear. Don’t overcook the fish. If you are cooking a whole fish and don’t own a specially designed fish barbecue basket, make a foil “basket”: Cut two pieces of heavy aluminum foil as long as the fish and about two times as wide and stack for double thickness. Brush oil on the foil, then perforate with pencil-sized holes. Place on the grill, oiled side up. Place the whole fish slightly off centre on the foil. Halfway through cooking, close the foil over the fish, flip the package, and reopen to complete cooking. Brushing the fish with a good olive oil after removing from the grill enhances its flavour. GRILLED SALMON Perfect for impressing your guests, BC salmon (Coho, Sockeye, Pink, Chum, White and Pink Spring) is a wonderful way to showcase the fabulous local bounty that the Market has to offer. We kept this recipe simple. You can add your favourite sauce (pesto works beautifully!) to enhance the grilled salmon or garnish with just a wedge of lemon. Serve with roasted new potatoes and a simple salad. 4 tbsp mayonnaise (full fat is best) 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp freshly ground pepper 1 whole salmon fillet, about 2 lb (1 kg)
GRILLING FISH To guarantee succulent grilled fish, make the most of its naturally lean and tender qualities. Oil the surface of the grill before using. Handle the fish carefully, as the flesh is delicate. While grilling, baste frequently with a sauce that can be as basic as melted butter mixed with lemon juice. To test for doneness, use a fork to carefully push flakes apart at
Preheat barbecue to medium. Oil the grill to prevent sticking. In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Place the
fillet, skin side down, on a sheet of foil and evenly spread the mayonnaise mixture over top. Tent the foil over the salmon and place on barbecue. Making dining out just a little bit easier It is now easier than ever to make healthy choices when dining out with the recent launch of the Province of British Columbia’s Informed Dining program. Featuring more than 300 restaurant outlets in British Columbia, the program publishes nutritional information and allows diners to view the information in a format similar to that of a nutritional guide on products at the grocery store. All you have to do is look for the Informed Dining logo at participating restaurants. “British Columbians have made it clear they want information to help them make informed choices about what they and their families are eating,” says B.C. Minister of Health Mike de Jong. “With Informed Dining, we are partnering with B.C. restaurants to help make the healthy choice the easy choice.” Some of the participating restaurants include chains such as The Boathouse, De Dutch, A&W and Little Caesar’s, and stand-alone restaurants such as H.A.V.E. Cafe in Vancouver, Mountain Eagle Books in Smithers and Joseph’s Coffee House in Victoria. With people in British Columbia eating a meal in a restaurant approximately 10 per cent of the time, it’s never been more important to be able to source out healthy options. With the new program, calorie and sodium information is prominently highlighted for all regular menu items, while other nutrients, including carbohydrates and fat, are also noted. encouraging every restaurant to join the initiative and make such information available. “We want to be part of the solution in making healthy choices, easy choices in B.C.,” says Vice-President of the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association Mark von Schellwitz. “This program has the potential to help restaurant patrons become more conscious about what they are eating – it also shines a light on those establishments already providing menu nutrition content while encouraging other restaurants to follow suit.” The provincial government has been working on this program since 2010, and has given restaurants several options for disclosing nutrition information, including a menu insert, a poster or a brochure. “I am proud that we have about 300 outlets across the province signed up to participate in this important program,” says Ian Tostenson, CEO and president of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association. “I know that other business will continue to learn more about Informed Dining and sign up – this information is what our customers have been telling us they want, and it is our responsibility to provide it.” The initiative is part of the Healthy Families BC campaign, created by the Province to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic disease. Over the past decade, researchers from fields as diverse as biology, psychiatry, engineering, horticulture, neuroscience, and medicine have realized what most of us know intuitively: nature is good for our health and wellbeing. These experts have discovered countless links between time spent outdoors and cognitive, physical, and emotional development. Studies show that enjoying a natural setting – like a park, beach, wetland, or forest – can reduce blood pressure, anxiety, and stress levels. Melissa Lem, a family doctor and member of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, says exposure to nature is vitally important for kids. She suggests that time spent with flora and fauna is essential for healthy psychological and physical development in children. In a recent Docs Talk column she points to studies that show daily doses of “green time” can be used to prevent and treat conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, hypertension, and diabetes. Ailments like myopia, asthma, and depression have also been linked to inadequate nature exposure. While this scientific body of evidence is fascinating and growing quickly, most of us remain unaware of the full range of health benefits that nature provides. And with more than 80 per cent of Canadians now living in urban settings, many of us lack a meaningful, regular connection with the natural environment that sustains us. Getting in touch with the outdoors has another great benefit: those who know and love nature work harder to protect it. This is why the David Suzuki Foundation is about to launch its first ever 30x30 Challenge. Starting June 1, we’re inviting Canadians to spend at least 30 minutes in nature each day for 30 days. By encouraging people to get a regular dose of fresh air we hope to help participants take advantage of the many health benefits nature has to offer. They might even make it part of their continuing daily practice. With the busy lives that many of us lead, taking time to get outside may seem difficult. But it’s easier than you think. nity gardens are often a short distance from the daily grind. And birds, bees, and other critters are usually nearby; you just have to take time to slow down, breathe, watch, and listen. Are you curious about how you can get your daily dose of nature? Ditch the indoor gym and go for a run or walk in a park or on a trail instead. Use your lunch break to get out of the office and visit a nearby green space. Find a nice leafy tree and read a book in the shade. Brush off your green thumb and spruce up your garden. And on June 15, make plans to get outside with your favourite little ones on Nature Play Day in Canada. For the young at heart, a British organization called the National Trust has put together a fun list of 50 activities all children should do before they are 11¾ years old. While playing conkers (a game involving chestnuts on strings) might not be among the top 50 Canadian pastimes, the list includes cool activities that are worthwhile for any age. The joys of rolling down a big hill, eating an apple picked fresh from a tree, and hunting for bugs are truly timeless. Join the 30x30 Challenge beginning June 1 and incorporate small natural diversions into your daily routine for a month. Add some green to your commute, lunch break, workout schedule, or playtime. ancouver musician Meredith Bates’ first memory of playing the violin delves all the way back to when she was five years old, enrolled at the Vancouver Academy of Music. “I remember in group class we were lined up like perfect violinists, listening to our teacher play this song called Perpetual Motion on the piano,” she recalls. “At the end of each class, we would go up, one at a time, and take a Smartie from the jar. “I guess that shows what resonates with you as child,” she adds with a laugh. “Candy.” Bates and her band, Pugs and Crows, will be bringing their genre-bending sound of indierock-meets-modern-jazz to the 9th annual In the House Festival, a three-day event that has musicians, poets and dancers performing in houses and backyards throughout homes on Commercial Drive. MOVIEREVIEWS Back in black: a visually stunning romp MEN IN BLACK 3 Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld Starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones & Josh Brolin Ten years after a disastrous sequel, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (agents J and K respectively) don the dapper suits and break out the neuralyzers once more for another alien adventure. Perhaps the time travel plot device was inevitable but such is the case in this third outing as the fresh prince travels back to 1969 to stop an alien (Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement) from killing a younger Agent K, played brilliantly by a chiseled and steely-eyed Josh Brolin. Seeing the actor magically channel Tommy Lee Jones is worth the price of admission alone and Clement’s toothy villain Boris the Animal demonstrates his underused big screen talents. It’s been
years since Smith has graced the big screen and it’s clear he’s not lost any former charm. However, the shifting tone of the movie and shaky script opts for too much sentimentality and feels a tad stale when compared to 1997’s original. Director Barry Sonnenfeld has crafted a visually stunning romp the third time around, displaying a keen eye for effective use of 3D, and legendary makeup artist Rick Baker’s exceptional creature designs are fabulous. Although the look is there, the execution reveals a few missed opportunities — a Coney Island chase and Chinese restaurant shootout Thor feel rushed. Even some of the aliens Diakow could have been more prominent instead of being confined to the background. Much of the magic is missing from Men in Black 3 but it’s a fun ride and offers a lot of sustainable charm.

Wes Anderson’s whimsical visions have always been realized in exacting fashion, with every camera movement, line reading, and article of clothing meeting with his particular specifications. That meticulousness has only grown more pronounced in the wake of Fantastic Mr. Fox, a stopmotion animation film that allowed Anderson to create and control everything on screen. And so, while Moonrise Kingdom may be the most deliberate and choreographed film of the director’s career, it also exudes a vitality that hasn’t been seen in his work since Rushmore. These seemingly contradictory qualities are evident in the film’s sublime opening in which bravura camerawork and rapid-fire humour conspire to introduce the troubled tweens at the centre of this ensemble comedy. Twelve-year-old Suzy (Kara Hayward), an ill-tempered Juliet, flees the home of her emotionally absent parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) to rendezvous with Sam (Jared Gilman), her social pariah of a Romeo who’s just gone AWOL from the Khaki Scouts. An ineffectual scout master (Edward Norton) immediately charges Sam’s former “beige lunatic” compatriots with tracking the couple across a desolate New England island. The affection that Anderson and co-writer Roman
Coppola harbour for their runaways (who frequently recall Badland’s outlaw lovers) is evident in every immaculately composed scene. It’s beguiling to watch Sam unflinchingly pierce Suzy’s ears (with jewelry he’s constructed from beetles and fish hooks) and then become a fumbling mess when simply kissing her. And while a soundtrack of Hank Williams and Françoise Hardy songs evinces the young outcasts’ soulfulness, it’s their disarming directness and willingness to go down with air rifles blazing that sets our hearts racing. — Curtis Woloschuk
Jack Black reveals a laudable complexity BERNIE Starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine Directed by Richard Linklater Whether he’s augmenting druggy sci-fi with rotoscoped animation (A Scanner Darkly) or transforming investigative journalism into satire (Fast Food Nation), writer-director Richard Linklater has routinely offered moviegoers rather unconventional adaptations. Based on a news article by Skip Hollandsworth, the black comedy Bernie continues this trend. The film takes its name from a gentle-hearted undertaker (Jack Black) who ingratiated himself to Carthage, Texas with his compassion for the bereaved and community involvement. Recurring interview segments with real-life Carthage citizens reveal the reverence these folks felt for the flamboyant Bernie Tiede. In turn, they also display the contempt directed at elderly, affluent Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine), a malicious widow who enlisted Bernie as a travelling companion and business manager. The casual intermingling of fact and fiction allows
Linklater to take considerable liberties with his “true story.” Taking their cues from the locals’ black-andwhite interpretations of Bernie and Marjorie, Black and MacLaine play their mismatched characters almost cartoonishly broad. Consequently, when Marjorie’s verbal abuse drives Bernie to murder her, the cowardice and callousness of the act doesn’t initially register. In a clever piece of storytelling, Linklater instead leaves viewers in league with the Carthage citizens, attempting to justify what’s an utterly indefensible act. Given how unaccustomed we’ve become to watching Black actually act, the deceptive complexity of his performance here is all the more laudable. With Bernie, he’s charged with playing a character who’s obsessed with deception (i.e. rendering corpses lifelike) and seems to have adopted a guise of his own. Bernie’s inscrutability renders his folksy charm increasingly unnerving. In turn, the film bearing his name becomes creepier than you ever would’ve imagined. — Curtis Woloschuk
