Dylan Battye, 15, spent three months in hospital.

By Jennifer Lang A groundswell of community support is building behind 15-year-old Dylan Battye, a promising athlete who nearly died after contracting a mysterious infection. In February, the Grade 10 Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary student was hospitalized with what was initially thought to be a bad cold. A week later he was put into a drug-induced coma and placed on life support at B.C. Children’s Hospital. He was in a fight for his life because the virus attacked his heart. He survived the ordeal, but doctors were forced to amputate one of his legs. Battye, a defenceman for the national U16 junior Canadian Ball Hockey team, is now healthy and at home. He was released from hospital May 12. He faces a long re-

Battye, an athletic, fit teen who was in top shape before the illness, also plays football for the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers. His Cloverdale family – of friends, teachers, teammates and coaches – are determined to help him recover and pursue his dreams by raising money to purchase an athletic prosthetic leg. “I won’t let this beat me – that’s his attitude,” his mother Elena Battye told The Reporter. Clayton Heights brings the bronze By Jennifer Lang Congratulations are in order for Tyler Hireen and Anthony Smith, two Clayton Heights Secondary students who’ve returned home from the national skills contest with bronze medals. Hireen, a returned graduate who’s 19, earned his bronze in welding; 16-year-old Smith, a Grade 11 student, earned his bronze in website development, School District 36 announced earlier this week. Both students were gold medal winners at the provincials in April, qualifying them for the Skills Canada National Competi-

tion in Edmonton, where 500 students across Canada competed at the national level. The skills competition tests students against their peers in more than 40 trade and technology areas, from robotics and cooking to carpentry and computer animation. The annual Skills Canada competition aims to boost awareness and interest in trades and technology as career options for students. It’s anticipated by 2020, there will be a trades shortage of about 1 million workers in Canada. – Cloverdale Reporter

It has nothing to do with Robocalls, the Federal Conservative party, or sore Liberal Party supporters, such as letter writer R. Benoit. It has everything to do with the spoiled ballots exceeding 26 votes, the number that the successful candidate won by. Since it was the individual voters who chose to spoil their ballot, it should be appealed to a higher court and tossed out. It’s finally time to end AirCare AirCare will die a natural death in December, 2014. It is long overdue. The provincial program, which is operated by a private operator under TransLink oversight, was actually instituted in the dying days of the Social Credit government. The Socreds were desperate to be seen as ‘doing something’ about air pollution from vehicles. By the time the program was up and running in early 1992, the Socreds had been voted out and the NDP were in power. Thus some members of the NDP are claiming that the program came in under their government, which is technically true. However, it was not their policy initiative. AirCare has been unpopular from the beginning, but at first it did serve a purpose. There were a lot of polluting vehicles on the road, some with pollution control equipment that had been disabled. Others belched oil smoke because of engine wear, and there was nothing to stop such vehicles from being driven indefinitely. AirCare either forced these

always been AirCare’s Achilles heel. Large trucks and buses have not been held to the same antipollution standards, even though they are a key source of vehicle emissions. It doesn’t make sense to set up AirCare-type stations for large vehicles. What would be more logical would be to give police and commercial vehicle inspectors enough power to take a badly-polluting vehicle off the road, or order one in for testing if they

The program was updated several times, with newer vehicles only requiring two-year inspections, and the newest vehicles not needing them at all. This is because vehicle emission standards

are much higher than they were in the early 1990s. As a result, AirCare hasn’t been necessary for some time. There simply aren’t enough older vehicles on the road to make such an expensive and bureaucratic program necessary. The province’s idea is to perhaps shift the emphasis to testing of larger vehicles, which has

Jasmine Garcha, development co-chair of the Surrey Relay For Life event, was just a young girl when her mother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in April, 2000. She watched as her mother Gurvinder went though several months of chemotherapy and radiation, which couldn’t have been easy. But after treatment, the cancer subsided, and her mom’s checkups became less frequent. And 10 years later, she took part in the 2010 Relay for Life, an annual fundraiser that celebrates the lives of those who are living with cancer. And she was back to do the survivor’s lap the following year. This year, now aged 46 and still cancer-free, Gurvinder will be back to do that lap at the 2012 Surrey Relay For Life, taking place June 9 at the Cloverdale Millennium Ampthitheatre. The event is a fundraiser and awareness event for the Canadian Cancer Society’s BC and Yukon division. Jasmine’s team name – Fighting For You – is dedicated to her mom. But it also describes the 22-year-old’s work with the fundraiser. “I’m very focused on building relationships with teams and encouraging others,” she said. “On

Synchro swimmers Italy bound By Jennifer Lang Two Cloverdale athletes, Tina Naveri and Kelsey Bittner, are headed to Italy this week for the 14th FINA World Masters Championships. Both are members of the 10-member Fraser Valley Masters Synchronized swim team, which is competing in solo, duet and team events. Naveri is competing in the solo and team event; Bittner is competing in the team event.

This is the first time all 10 team members will be swimming together at an international competition, Naveri said. The prospect has many team members both excited and a little nervous about competing at a high-level, international, multisport competition, she added. The championships are June 3 to 17 in Riccione, Italy. The event features swimming, diving, water polo, open water, synchronized swimming and miscellaneous

rules competitions. Naveri said the team is having a great season. In April, the team won the provincial championships in Langley, and a duet placed first at the U.S. nationals in California. The team, which formed in 2002, trains out of Simon Fraser University, and is comprised of athletes whose ages range from 22 to 32. All have swimming, coaching and judging experience.

RAIN or SHINE

Don’t party hearty in the park With warmer weather ahead, the Surrey RCMP is warning the public it will be stepping up patrols at parks this summer. There’s typically a rise in noise, mischief, and consumption of alcohol in parks in the summer months, as more people head outside. Niehbourhood liaison units, City of Surrey bylaw officers, and volunteers will be part of enforcement

and public awareness activities, Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger said. RCMP officers will also be speaking to local high school graduates about alcohol and drug abuse – and the fines associated with violating park bylaws. Those include fines for loitering in a park after dark, unlawful fires, possession of liquor, littering on the beach, and dogs without a leash – all subject to $200 fines each.

Super ‘Douper’ lodge fundraiser An ABBA tribute band is headlining an upcoming concert at the Summit Theatre at Cascades Casino that will have the crowd dancing and singing along. ABRA Cadabra will be performing all of the Swedish supergroup’s biggest hits, from “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen” to “Super Trouper” and “SOS” – songs that are well nigh impossible to listen to without tapping your toes or even getting up to dance, whether it’s your living room or at a larger venue. The concert this year’s fundraiser for Langley Lodge, a com-

plex care facility for seniors. It’s happening Sunday, June 10, 5 p.m. at the Summit Theatre at Cascades Casino in Langley. Tickets are $30, and they’re available by calling 604-530-2211. This is the fourth annual fundraiser for Langley Lodge, a not-for-profit, accredited healthcare facility. Net proceeds from the concert will help pay for therapies and programs for the residents, making a big difference in their quality of life. Organizers are hoping to sell out all 350 seats. The cast of ABRA Cadabra perform a highenergy show with powerful vocals, musicians, dancers and costumes.

Riders rally for the cause

Hundreds of motorcyclists roared into Fraser Downs Sunday for the Westcoast Motorcycle Ride To Live event in support of prostate cancer. The May 27 event saw more than 800 participants take part in a poker run that started at Trev Deely Motorcycles in Vancouver. The event raised more than $150,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of B.C. Fraser Downs was a celebration site for this year’s ride, hosting a classic car and motorcycle show and shine. The Cloverdale Lions served up a pancake breakfast for the event, and there was live music from the Brent Lee Band.

Sophie and Nick Tweed-Simmons, reality TV stars and siblings, are coming to Cloverdale this weekend to meet with the public. The offspring of KISS bassist Gene Simmons and former playmate Shannon Tweed are holding a meet and greet at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino Sunday, June 3, starting at around 2:30 p.m. The pair, who star along with their parents in the A&E series Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, will be in town following a concert June 1 at Richmond’s River Rock Show Theatre. They’ll be singing standards such as Etta James’ “At Last” and Dean Martin’s “Sway”, along with blues and jazz numbers. Sophie, 19, is completing a degree in computer engineering and religious studies, while Nick, 23, has completed an English degree. Sophie and her parents were in town earlier this year for the opening of Sophie’s Place, the region’s first multidisciplinary child protection centre for kids who have been abused. The centre was named after Sophie when she got involved in the project after meeting with Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts.

Red hot Virgin Upper Class goes to London

And they say ying as lost its lustre. Wrong! It’s out of my world

Sipping champagne in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class cabin I soak up what closely resembles ultra violet cabin lighting. The pinky-lilac infusion – teamed with the bubbly – produces the clearly desired relaxing, pampering effect. Hmm‌ I’d rate as Uber Cool Mama if I could reproduce this combination in my condo. For now, I’ll just bask in it here. “Have you been introduced to your ’suite’, yet?â€? an elegantly coiffured flight attendant enquires, indicating my cocoonlike semi-conical surroundings. Her French manicured nails, fitted signature red suit, matching ‘Dorothy’ heels, and “Upper Class Redâ€? lipstick by bareMinerls accented only by understated jewellery are reminiscent of a more elegant airline era. Seated companionably on what will double as my in-flight footrest, she quickly gives me the lowdown on accessing the

Heathrow, I’m ready for scrambled eggs, fruit and yogurt. Unlike my usual long-haul flights, I feel refreshed and minus that grungy, numb I-slept-like-apretzel feeling. Ten minutes ahead of sched-

ule, Virgin Atlantic’s brand new A330-300 inaugural flight from Vancouver greased onto the London tarmac with barely a bump. I kid you not. I couldn’t believe it. If could I sketch ( I love cartoons), this would have been an aircraft with batting eyelashes calling in to the tower: “ Hi, Honey! I’m home. Watch for ticket sales and competitive pricing if London is on your Bucket List this year. No matter which of Virgin’s three classes of service you chose, these folks have definitely upscaled the neighb‘air’hood. I just couldn’t resist that! Virgin Atlantic, services Vancouver–London (Heathrow) Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday until Oct. 27. Costs from $778 plus taxes, book at virginatlantic.com. – Ursula Maxwell-Lewis was a guest of Virgin Atlantic. As a former Air Hostess, she remembers when cabin pressure had a different meaning.

And they say flying has lost its lustre. Wrong! I’m feeling Richard Branson-ishly out of this world. Definitely out of my world. My comfy navy ‘sleep suit’ is delivered after dinner, quilts cover my now converted seat – and it’s sweet dreams at 32,000 feet over the Atlantic, Virgin Airlinesstyle.
