Business estimates that Family Day will cost the average small business more than $1,100 in wage costs, either paying employees to stay home or overtime to come to work. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington reminded the legislature the new

holiday is imposed on business after three increases in the minimum wage in the past year, an average $3,000 transition to the harmonized sales tax and soon a similar cost to switch back to the provincial sales tax next year. Clark promised the

new holiday during her B.C. Liberal leadership campaign last year. It will join February holidays in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Prince Edward Island. Clark has argued that the new holiday will not only increase family time, it will also boost business for ski hills, hotels restaurants and other tourist businesses during a slow time of year. Independent Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson noted the provincial government’s own payroll cost of the new holiday will be $28 million, a sum that could be applied to a range of pressing government problems. Simpson urged the government to wait and see if its budget is balanced as promised next year before imposing more costs and reducing B.C.’s productivity. Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen was the ¿rst independent to speak out against Family Day, backed by John Cummins, leader of the B.C. Conservative Party that van Dongen has joined. Clark and Labour Minister Margaret McDiarmid said choosing a date that is not in step with other western provinces or the President’s Day holiday in the U.S. would mean less out-oftown traf¿c at B.C. attractions for people with a day off.

Arts council looking for directors to help promote arts in the city Submitted Next year is the 40th anniversary of the Cranbrook and District Arts Council, and it could be the leanest yet—or the last one—with only three directors slated to continue overseeing the brand-new arts space downtown. Linda Holmes, acting president of the CDAC, said the new space has lots of potential to bring fresh arts opportunities to the community—all it lacks is directors. “We can have up to 10,

we need a minimum of eight, and we’re going in with three,” Holmes said. “So we’re putting out the call for people to come in and help push the arts forward, using our facility as a home base.” New directors will be elected during the annual general meeting, which is on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 7 pm. Memberships will be available at the door. Holmes said the new public gallery space is just waiting to expand its exhibition reper-

toire and its workshops/ classes. “We have clay, we’ll have acting on camera, we’ve even got prenatal art classes, and the workshops are just the beginning. I can see a real demand for this arts space in the coming year.” Forced to move in September 2011, the council spent four months renovating a number of separate of¿ces to the larger gallery and classroom spaces. “We knocked out walls, rolled up carpets and re-¿nished Àoors,”

We can have up to 10, we need a minimum of eight and we’re going in with three,”

Linda Holmes Acting President of the CDAC

Holmes said. “It was a lot of volunteer work, but the new space is very warm and inspiring.” A handful of directors are ending terms or stepping down, leaving just three going forward.

“So we’re putting out the call, loud and clear,” said Holmes. “If you’ve ever wanted to promote the arts in Cranbrook, now is a huge opportunity! We want your skills—especially if you’re an artist or if

you have board experience.” One of the major projects on the horizon is to secure Cranbrook Fire Hall #1 as a permanent arts facility. In aid of this goal, the CDAC has recently submitted a number of grant applications to conduct a feasibility study on the project. “If you’re interested in moving the ¿re hall project forward, this is the year to get involved,” Holmes said. All members are welcome to attend the

JUDGES CORNER

CONTESTANT CORNER THE FINAL FOUR CUPCAKES WITH

Danielle is the owner of Crumbs Cakery and Creator of Cupcake Wars. Danielle loves cupcakes! But when it comes to Cupcake Wars, Danielle won’t be taking it easy on the contestants. Danielle will be judging contestants on their technical skills and overall execution.

Sandy Smith is a realtor for Royal Lepage East Kootenay and author of Kootenay Country Kitchens Cookbook. Sandy is so sweet, always looking for the good in each cupcake. And a nice balance of sweet is exactly what she’ll be looking for in avor and texture.

Mike & Joey are the owners of The Choice Shop. They have been selling cupcakes since grade 5, and are determined to balance the judges table with their masculinity. They will be looking for overall awesomeness in each cupcake

Becky & Robyn are the owners of MJs Floral & Gifts. Don’t mistake these sweet pretty faces for weakness. When it comes to judging appearance, it’s going to take a lot more than owers to impress these ladies.

June’s Cupcake Challenge is presented by Northstar GM: The Sam Steele Cupcake

This month marks Sam Steele Days! And to help celebrate, this round will encompass Cranbrook’s wild western roots. Contestants must incorporate two ingredients from our challenge ingredient list. The ingredients must not only be in the cupcakes, they must be a prominent avor in the cupcake. Ingredients: Corn, Baked Beans, Dandelions, Coffee, Brown Sugar, Molasses, Marshmallows, Cheddar, Bacon, and Sarsaparilla Root.

Prizes Contestants are baking their way to over $1000 in prizes, donated by Crumbs Cakery, Sandy Smith, MJs Floral & Gifts, The Choice Shop, Pro-Fitness Gym, Dream Events, The Paw Shop, St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino, and Northstar GM. For a complete list of prizes, visit www.cranbrookcakes.com

Danika Peltzer’s Honey Comb cupcake was a unanimous decision at the Judges Table! Using fresh honeycomb and dates to create a subtle and natural taste; the Judges devoured every last bite of each of their cupcakes (which is a ďŹ rst!). Danielle said “The uffy light texture and delicate tastes of your cupcake won me over!â€? Sandy said “Smooth and creamy yogurt frosting. The dates were baked evenly throughoutâ€?. Becky & Robyn said “ It was baked perfectly, and the avors blended together awlessly.â€? Mike & Joey said “ You used the ingredients right. And real honeycomb? We likey!â€?

Casey Jenson’s Workout cupcake brought her through to the next round. While her creativity presented judges with perfect fondant fruit, and the use of vanilla protein powder was creative and worked well. Unfortunately, her frosting left a little something to be desired. Danielle said “I appreciate the detail in the fondant decor, but the (slimy) texture of the frosting put me off a bitâ€?. Sandy said “I enjoyed the cupcake and the ďŹ lling, but the frosting wasn’t my favoriteâ€?. Becky & Robyn said “The ďŹ ne detail work was impressive.â€? Mike & Joey said “The frosting wasn’t good, but everything else tasted great!â€?

Noah Ralph has been a front runner for the past four rounds. But this round was a challenge for Cranbrook Cupcake Wars’ youngest contestant. The judges hope to see Noah get back to his regular creativity and avor proďŹ les in the next round. Danielle said “I asked to see something a little simpler. Unfortunately, I think this was too simpleâ€?. Sandy said “It was a nice moist cupcake, but the raspberry seeds in the cupcake were a bit unpleasantâ€?. Becky & Robyn said “We would have liked to have seen you do something more with the apricots.â€? Mike & Joey said “We are deďŹ nitely impressed with your attempt at using quinoa our, but it just didn’t work with the overall avorsâ€?.

Tanya Le Clair made it through to the next round with her healthy Fruit & Yogurt cupcake. Unfortunately, this cupcake left a bad taste in the judges’ mouths. Danielle said “Beyond the appearance, the frosting was gelatinous and the cake’s texture is not working for me. Sandy said “Beautiful presentation, but not working for me texturally. Becky & Robyn said “We love that your cupcakes always have a clean presentation. Vibrant and inviting. Mike & Joey said “You had us at blackberry. The fresh fruit was great.

Crumbs Cakery Kiosk Opening in the Tamarack Center Beginning June 16th (Sam Steele Weekend) The Crumbs Cakery Cupcake Kiosk will be open in the Tamarack Center from 11:30am to 5:00pm daily, throughout the summer. Located in the shop between Telus and Ardene’s.

A pond-less waterfall is a great way to add a water feature to your yard, with virtually no maintenance. The beautiful thing about the pond-less waterfall is that – as the name suggests - there is no pond. Don’t get me wrong, a pond is a beautiful feature in any yard. However, they need attention to develop, stay clean and attractive for many years. A pond-less waterfall is a recirculating waterfall and/or stream where the water almost has a disappearing effect when it seeps through the gravel and back down to the pump. So why would you want a waterfall without a pond? The truth is that a pond-less waterfall can be a great alternative for someone who isn’t quite sure if a pond is right for their family. If space is an issue, do not worry - the pond-less waterfall is designed to fit in small areas and it can be as big as you want. If safety is an issue, because of children and pets, then pond-less is for you. Since there is no pond or any deep reservoir of water we can feel comfortable with children and pets splashing away in any pond-less waterfall. Taking care of the pond-less waterfall is easy. All you have to do is fill the water feature every couple of weeks, because of loss from evaporation and splashing water. Or you can simply add a float valve that will top it off regularly and maintain the correct water level. The best part about a pond-less waterfall is that it is flexible and by this I mean, if two or three years down the road you change your mind and would like to try a pond, that is no problem. Turning a pond-less into a pond is very simple and if you have a pond and want to turn it into pond-less you can do that too. It might be difficult to imagine a waterfall and stream without a pond. Where does the water go? A pond-less water feature works much like a pond. The hole is dug, lined with a liner, and then rock and gravel are added. The water is then re-circulated from underneath the rocks and gravel by a pump that sits on the bottom, inside a Snorkel. A pipe then runs from there up to a biofalls filter and into an overflowing waterfall, where the water falls back into the reservoir. A pond-less water fall is very simple to install and can be done by any home owner with a few simple, guided steps. It’s a way to get the beautiful sound and effect of water into your backyard. I encourage you to try a pond-less waterfall you will not be disappointed, with the effect it has on your yard. Now is the time, so come to Top Crop and discover the world of building a waterfall. Till next time, happy gardening. Submitted by Ryan

Submitted Two local organizations in the East Kootenays will receive funding from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) to help combat invasive plants. The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council will receive $193,500 and the Regional District of East Kootenay will receive $23,300. “There’s no arguing the great beauty of the East Kootenays. A lesser known threat to our stunning landscapes is species of plants not native to these lands. I know a lot of people will be relieved to know this funding is coming from the Province, said East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett. Invasive plants are ones that are not native to a particular ecosystem and have the potential to displace long-established species, causing considerable economic or environmental damage. They may disrupt natural ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, increase soil erosion, alter soil chemistry or adversely affect commercial crops. Methods used to minimize the spread of invasive plants include mechanical treatments (physical removal or destruction), chemical treatments (targeted use of herbicides), and biological controls (using an invasive plant’s natural predators to control

its growth). The Invasive Species Grants will be used to: • Protect habitats and native species from impacts caused by expanding invasive plant populations; • Develop collaborative invasive plant management strategies with all land management agencies at the local level; • Identify and treat invasive plant species that are new to a region; • Support First Nations IP Partnership Programs (12 established and several more in progress); • and support local government weed programs and awareness activities. Across British Columbia, 28 recipients will share $1,727,000 in funding from the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) to support the objectives of the provincial Invasive Plant Program. The Invasive Plant Program identi¿es the locations of invasive plant species and responds rapidly to contain and eradicate them before they spread. This funding is in addition to the $2.5 million already earmarked by the Province for invasive plant control and management in 2012/13. Overwhelming lack of smoke alarm use in BC

PHOTO TOM FLETCHER

Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux and Justice Minister Shirley Bond listen to Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis explain research into the lack of smoke alarm protection in B.C. By Tom Fletcher Despite years of public education, almost 70 per cent of the houses that caught ¿re in B.C. in recent years still did not have a working smoking alarm. Many of those were low-income homes, rental units, many on

aboriginal reserves and other rural locations, according to a study of residential ¿re reports done by the University of the Fraser Valley. Seniors, disabled people and young children were at greater risk of dying in a house ¿re. Justice Minister Shirley Bond and Social

Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux revealed new support Monday for the B.C. government’s campaign to get a working smoke alarm in every home in the province. Smoke alarm maker Kidde Canada is donating 5,000 units with a retail value of $75,000

that will be distributed to B.C.’s most vulnerable populations this fall. And Black Press, whose publications reach 1.2 million B.C. homes, has pledged a public awareness advertising campaign worth $350,000 to remind people to install or upgrade their smoke alarms.

Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis, president of the Fire Chiefs Association of B.C., said the study used data from B.C.’s Of¿ce of the Fire Commissioner from 2006 to 2011. The study suggests that 69 lives could be saved each year if homes across Canada had working smoke detectors, he said. “Smoke alarms give you time to escape from the ¿re – it seems pretty simple, doesn’t it?” Garis told a news conference at the B.C. legislature. “High-risk members of society are most likely to have a ¿re and least likely to have a working smoke alarm.” Garis emphasized that all smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years, and batteries changed annually. Further details about the campaign will be publicized in Black Press publications during 2012. More information about the research and the program are available at www. fcabc.ca

Caution and Common Sense Urged As Fawning Season Begins

Residents are encouraged to exercise both caution and common sense this spring, as the fawning season approaches for deer. There’s no arguing the great beauty of the East Kootenays. A lesser known threat to our stunning landscapes is Invasive Plants. I know a lot of people will be relieved to know that, in addition to the $2.5 million already earmarked by the Province for invasive plant control and management in 2012/13, an additional $193,500 is going to the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council and $23,300 to the RDEK. If you do not receive your notice within the next few days, please contact City Hall at 426-4211 so that a copy may be forwarded to you. Taxes are due on July 3, 2012, after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current taxes. Home Owner Grants may be claimed even if current taxes are not paid in full. Penalties apply to Home Owner Grants not claimed by July 3, 2012. If you are participating in the pre-authorized payment program, please note that the prepayment amount on your tax notice includes the May 15th and June 15th payments. We also accept Interact Debit Card payments. Payment may also be made by telephone/pc banking and through most financial institutions. You must still claim the Home Owner Grant at City Hall or on-line via the link on the www.cranbrook.ca website.

Application forms are available from the City Hall Tax Department. If you would like one mailed, please contact us at 426-4211. Any overpayment on the 2012 property taxes will be applied to the first payment(s) for 2013.

Learning solutions for all ages Rarely, if ever, does the phrase “one size ¿ts all” accurately depict the reality of the product or service it advertises. This is true in the educational ¿eld, especially in reading and writing. This was one of the main reasons behind the creation of ABC Interactive Learning Centre. Sally Struthers and her staff understand the frustrations that parents have in supporting their children who are struggling to read and learn. Scienti¿c Learning’s Fast ForWord and Reading Assistant products, being offered by ABC Interactive Learning Centre, are designed to accelerate learning by developing the student’s brain to process information more ef¿ciently. Fast ForWord and Reading Assistant achieve this goal by providing computer-delivered intensive exercises that build the cognitive skills required to read and learn effectively. “I did not anticipate the astonishing success these kids would have in their reading and writing,” said Sally Struthers, educator and ABC Interactive Learning Centre owner. “These products are tailormade for students who require more individualized teaching.” The idea behind the Fast ForWord language, literacy and reading series is that engaging with a child is the best way to teach. Through interactive, animated technologies, the course adapts to each student’s particular skill level. Each week par-

The teaching professionals at the centre use these reports to guide student progress. Scienti¿c Learning Reading Assistant is a tool that strengthens Àuency, vocabulary and comprehension using advanced speech recognition technology and scienti¿cally-based interventions that helps students become eager, life-long readers. Elementary school students using Reading Assistant twice a week for four months experienced an average 43 per cent increase in Àuency gains over the norms. “A student

came to me in November, reading at a mid-grade one level. He has made gains of a year and a half since then. When he told me, he could read, I knew the program had made a difference for him,” said Struthers. If you feel like your child is being left behind in an age when literacy is a critical component of everyday life, Sally Struthers urges you to connect with the professionals at ABC Interactive Learning Centre to ¿nd a solution that will ¿t your child’s needs. Homework help & tutoring

Build selfesteem & confidence

Improve memory & attention

One parent’s learning success story A local parent of a child in the program summed up why she is a supporter of these two learning solutions. “A year ago our son Curtis was ¿nishing the 8th grade. Throughout his academic career, Curt struggled with his studies. Despite endless hours of helping him with homework, hiring tutors and his best efforts he could barely achieve passable grades. Often, this left Curt demoralized, angry and lacking of any self worth. As parents, we asked ourselves what more we could do and felt that we had let our son down. Last September, as he began the 9th grade, we set out once again to ¿nd a tutor. Regrettably, ¿nding the right tutor is extremely dif¿cult and by early October we still hadn’t found the help our son needed. It was then that we stumbled across Sally Struthers and her ABC Interactive

Learning Centre. Upon analysis and consultation with Sally, it was revealed that Curtis’ learning and comprehension was that of

a Grade 3 student, not of a student in the 9th Grade. Under Sally’s careful tutelage and the aid of this remarkable program, Curtis’ transformation began. By November, the changes were beginning to show. In January, the differences were more substantial and by April the results were remarkable. No longer did he need our “help” with his homework, his report card

cation. Today, Curtis is working on his 5th and ¿nal level with ABC Interactive Learning Centre. We are so proud of Curtis and his achievements, and can’t thank Sally enough for bringing out Curtis’ true potential. Without her and ABC Interactive Learning, I can’t image what Curtis’ future would have held.” –Tanya, local parent.

Just as a body runs better and quicker when fit, brains learn better when fit. ABC Interactive Learning is offering an intensive computer-based summer camp. Our goal is to help your child start the next school year with improved reading and learning skills. Our reading software not only exercises reading muscles, it also increases self-esteem and confidence. Date: July 9 to August 17 (choose from 4 or 6 weeks) Monday to Friday: 9 - 10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Location: ABC Interactive Learning Centre 1844 Mt. To my oldest son,

Just want you to know, your Mom and your Step-dad Wilf think of you every day, and when we cry, after all the tears, my dear boy, we end up with a great big smile, because that’s what you did most honey, made us “smile.” We miss and love you more and more every day! And to all that never forgot Steve on his birthday, myself and Wilf thank each and every one of you!!

Rod began teaching in 1959 and later became an elementary school Principal, a career he loved and enjoyed until his retirement in 1994. After retirement Rod served on the Board of School Trustees. He was a strong advocate for education and was a great teacher. He spent much of his time outside of the school in sports related actives such as umpiring baseball, refereeing hockey, working years with the Cranbrook Tritons Swim Club, and attending local hockey events. Rod was a devoted husband to Marie and father to his six girls and later his extended family and grandchildren. His wisdom, leadership, and integrity were just a few of his many strengths. Rod inspired people; not only his family members but anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. He always made everyone he came into contact with feel special and always gave them his undivided attention. If you wanted some great advice; well, all you had to do was ask. Many of us did and were guided by his caring wisdom; he just wanted to help and see you happy and do well. Rod had a passion for baseball and hockey (Montreal Canadians) and could be seen enjoying the Kootenay Ice at the RecPlex. Rod is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Marie (Halko), along with his six loving daughters: Jackie (Stephen); Janine; Debby (Dan); Kathie (Steve); Kristi (Richard); and Danielle. Grandfather of Matthew, Nicholas, Owen, Sean, Jaina, Jarod, and Gunnar. Brother of Darryl (Bonnie) Guza of Penticton. A private family memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.hffs.ca

OBITUARY Urban Eugene Lucas August 13, 1926 – May 29, 2012 It is with profound sorrow and deep regret that we announce the passing of Urban (Luke) into the waiting arms of our Lord Jesus. Urban was predeceased by his wife Dorothy, parents Albert and Elsie, brothers Merlin, Keith and Albert (Bunny) and sisters Yvonne, Eileen and Shirley. He is survived by his twin sister Muriel (Mighty) O’Neil, brothers Carmen (Valerie) and Donny; daughters Juanita LucasMalley (John) of Cranbrook, BC, Linda Findlay (Jim) of Kelowna, BC; grandchildren Aaron, Joe, Corey and Darcy; great grandchildren; Lucas, Dezaray, Aaliyah, Teagan, Mica, Lillian, Skyla and Piper; as well as his loving companion Antonetta (Nettie) Dewit. Born in Downyville, ON, he settled in Kimberley, BC, where he worked for Cominco. He was a volunteer fire-fighter and member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Moving his family to Cranbrook in 1970 he was employed by the City of Cranbrook as a Fire-Fighter, then became an Emergency Paramedic where he maintained the position of Unit Chief at the Cranbrook station until his retirement in 1990. He spent his last years in Kelowna “for warmer weather and better golf.” Urban will be best remembered for his love of fiddling (he was a member of the BC Old Time Fiddlers), clogging, infectious grin and laughter. Urban was also a devoted member of the Catholic Church. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all those whose lives he touched. Father, Friend, Lover, Companion. Good-Bye Dad; missed but not forgotten. Love always. Memorial Service will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 1:00 pm. Interment at later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association – Hospice House, 2035 Ethel Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 2Z6.
