Life will be a little easier for 70 Mile House resident and single mom Maria Raphael and her daughter, Darci-Rose, after they picked up their 1994 seven-seat Dodge Caravan SE van at Sunrise Ford on May 19. The Raphaels didn’t have a vehicle and it is tough to get around in 70 Mile without one. They had to rely on mom and grandma Rose Raphael for transportation. Psalm 23 Transition Society executive director Marvin Declare provided the impetus

for the van giveaway through the society’s Donate a Vehicle program through which the community reaches out to help a family in need with the gift of a vehicle. He talked to other 100 Mile businesses in search for help to make the program work locally. Psalm 23 Training Centre student Albert Able volunteered to check out and make needed repairs to the van. Sunrise Ford principal dealer Leon Chrétien jumped on board and donated the detailing and also provided new tires for the van. 100 Mile Glass supplied the glass

replacement, parts and labour. The selection of the recipient for the van was determined by an essay-writing contest, and it was grandma Rose’s submission that tipped the scales in her daughter’s favour. When it came time to pick up the van, there was a lot smiling, laughing and more than a few tears. Declare says the whole project went better than he expected and he was really pleased with the outcome. “To be able to watch the emotion of Maria receiving this vehicle showed us this was meant to be. It fortified

The

the fact this is something we can continue to do.” Chrétien was also happy about the way everything turned out. “This is all about paying it forward. We don’t want people to be worried about coming forward and accepting something and thinking it is a handout. “We’re reaching out to give people a hand up to the next level ... we can’t always control our circumstances. It’s hoped that people will walk away from something like this and say, ‘as soon as I can, I’m going to do something big for someone else’.”

Sometime overnight of May 20-21, unknown culprits entered, started, moved and then set fire to a Ford F450 flat deck truck, which had been parked at a logging operation on the 610 Road approximately 20 kilometres north off the 600 Road north of Canim Lake. Campers at nearby Susan Lake reported hearing noises in the vicinity between 7 and 8 p.m. on May 20. The damage and loss is estimated to be $20,000, and the investigation into this matter is continuing. If you have any information on this or any other crimes in the 100 Mile House area call 1-800-222TIPS (8477). Your identity will remain unknown. Should your information lead to the arrest of the responsible party Crime Stoppers will pay cash for the TIP.

By Mel Newcombe The Second Annual Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) Bright Red Bookshelf book drive was a great success. We surpassed our goals and collected more than 3,500 books. Thanks to all of our elementary schools that donated books and to Canlan Ice Sports, Nuthatch Books, 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre Society, GROW and the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre for helping us collect books. By way of appreciation to our elementary students, each school received a gift card from CCPL to buy a new children’s book of their choice at Nuthatch Books. The schools will hold a draw to pick a winner. CCPL drew names for two schools to win a bag of new children’s books. Lac la Hache and Buffalo Creek elementary schools won first and second prizes respec-

tively. Thanks to Nuthatch Books and their customers for donating books for the prizes. A very special thank you goes to the 100 Mile House Free Press, which promoted the book drive and help us get the

Golfers see the highs and lows of the game By Spence Henderson Another 63 golfers came out for the 108 Men’s Night at the 108 Resort golf course. A lot of golfers had been practising for the last Sunday’s (May 27) Breakfast Open. Apparently wearing a Canucks hat doesn’t switch the focus from hockey to golf as a large number of hockey sticks (7s) were seen scattered over the scorecards. However, there was also a lot of good shooting, with more than a half dozen rounds in the 30s. Congratulations to three men elected (volunteered) to the executive - Bill Harris, James Clancy and Shane Wilkie, as well as to our new handicap chairman Bob Wieduwilt. It’s starting to look like a great golf

season. Bill Graham parlayed a first flight closest to the pin (KP) into a deuce. John Kuharski and Mark Larson also potted the elusive deuces. First flight Wilkie led with a 34, Jim Laird and Chris Stevens shot 36s. Matt McNeil was low gross at 32 Second flight Mark Larson shot 39, Laurie Miclash and Jim French had net 32s Third flight Clancy shot a 40, Shawn Reid and Dave Jollymour shot net 31s

Relay still seeking teams Organization of the 100 Mile House Relay for Life on June 9 is moving ahead. Currently, there are nine teams registered and the committee is still hopes a few more community members will enter a team. The organizing committee would definitely welcome any volunteers who would help during the relay. Organizer Alaina Fryer says there will be a few things done differently this year because there are not as many teams as in the past. “The idea is there will be an open invitation to individuals

to come down to the park and join the festivities. They do not need to have a whole team. “They can make a donation if they wish, and just come enjoy the day of entertainment, have their children play at the kids’ area, nothing formal. People don’t have to stay the whole day. Come out and see what it is all about.” She adds they would like to hear from survivors of cancer, as well as anyone who is currently dealing with the disease and would like to join in the short Survivors

Lap of the inner field and kick off of the Relay for Life event. Survivors are also welcome to share a brief story about how the disease has affected their lives. Children will be entertained with many activities in the kids play area, you can also watch tai chi demos, listen to a number of bands and this season’s Cariboo Idols will also be performing on stage. The lighting of the Luminary bags will be done around 9 p.m. and will culminate with the moving See RELAY… page 5

Make $240/hr on June 2nd Only!! OHMSA and Sunrise FORD are pleased to announce another HUGE opportunity for the community. DRIVE ONE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY is an amazing NON-fundraiser FUNDRAISER brought to you exclusively by Sunrise FORD and OHMSA! FORD pays you to drive a car, truck or SUV for 5 minutes and you donate all “earnings” to OHMSA. That is correct! A fundraiser that does NOT cost you any funds! How easy can that be? A beautiful soccer facility has been built and we need to continue its expansion. This event will give us up to $6000 if YOU show up to test drive a new market-changing FORD vehicle. NO ONE WILL SELL YOU and NO ONE WILL CALL YOU LATER. This is about getting money for the kids and we need your help as one of the 300 drivers that will help earn the $20 for each 5 minute test drive necessary to earn the total available $6000 that FORD of Canada and Sunrise FORD are trying to give away! ON JUNE 2ND show up between 9:30am to 4:30pm at the SAVE-ON-FOODS parking lot and give us the few minutes it takes to make this great community fundraiser successful.

Jeck signing second book in 100 Mile House By Monika Paterson Free Press

Lloyd Jeck, 81, will be in 100 Mile House on June 8 to sign his second book, British Columbia Trails Heading North. A “then-and-now” book, he says it’s about the backcountry of British Columbia. It features stories of five pioneers and his present-day adventures. Born in McBride and now living in Clearwater, he wrote his first book, In The Shadow of the Peaks: Rocky Mountain Tales, in 2000, which he selfpublished. He wrote about his own adventures growing up in the Robson Valley. Jeck’s second book,

Lloyd Jeck British Columbia Trails Heading North, which is also self-published, came together after a trip to a hunting lodge and sitting around the campfire listening songs. One was sung about an early miner in the Manson Creek area and his unfortunate demise. The storyline of this song sounded very interesting to

Jeck, and after asking for a copy of the lyrics, he began to research the story. In turn, he decided to research the stories of four other pioneers whom he wrote into the book as well his own outdoor adventures. Folks can meet Jeck and get an autographed copy of his book at Nuthatch Books on June 8 from 11 to 2 p.m.

BUY A GARAGE SALE PACKAGE AT THE 100 MILE FREE PRESS AND WE’LL HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT SALE! 10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this!
