Province prepares to battle $500 million suit over Flathead The province has to deal with a $500 million lawsuit over its land use decision in the Flathead watershed. Back in February of 2010, the province of B.C. signed a memorandum of understanding with Montana permitting recreation and hunting in the Flathead watershed, but banning mining or oil and gas

extraction. At the time, this move was lauded by environmental groups as well as guide-out¿tting organizations but panned by the Association of Mineral Exploration B.C., claiming there was a lack of due process in the memorandum. Now Cline Mining has ¿led the $500 million lawsuit stating its mineral rights “were expropriated, taken or injuriously affected by the province’s passing of the (Flathead Watershed Conservation) Act.” A release from the company states, “Cline is also seeking compensation including, but not limited to, the loss of the value of the licences and applications for licences for these properties, estimated at in excess of $500 million on a net present value basis over the expected lives of the mines.” This lawsuit comes after a $30 million settlement the Province

paid to Boss Energy in October after it banned uranium mining. Wildsight and the Sierra Club of B.C.. campaigned vociferously against mining in the region and welcomed the mining ban. However, representatives state that the province’s Mining Act leaves the door open to companies looking to sue for compensation. “Our 150 year old act gives special treatment to the mining sector that other sectors do not enjoy,” said Casey Brennan, Wildsight’s Southern Rocky Mountains Program Manager. “It’s time B.C. followed the lead of other provinces and updated our act to take community and environmental concerns into account.” B.C.’s Mineral Tenure Act is based on the “free entry” system, abandoned by other provinces, that allows claims to be staked virtually anywhere in B.C. without prior approval from the B.C. government or First Nations, and without taking into account the ecological importance of the land in question. Once the claim is made it supersedes all other potential land uses. “We look forward to permanently protecting the Flathead with national park in the southeastern one-third of the valley and a Wildlife Management Area in the rest of the valley,” said Brennan. A statement from the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum resources said that the province would not comment on the lawsuit because it is before the courts. However the statement said that it is currently far apart on negotiations with Cline Mining.

Denise's Weekly Features It’s Really Not What You Take, It’s What Your Body Absorbs Kids Multiple Vitamin/Mineral It is extremely difficult to convince our children to take a multivitamin on a daily basis - “I don’t like the taste of that pill; Its too big-I can’t swallow it; There’s no juice to take it with; My sister touched it before I could take it; I dropped it & can’t find it” While we can’t guarantee you that your children will take our Kid’s Multi everyday, we can assure you that our Kid’s Multi is easier to take than pills or capsules & it tastes good! You’ll be thrilled to learn that a liquid supplement has absorption rates far superior to capsules or tablets.

I was wrong. For years I have heard about, and disagreed with, the notion that the body can be intolerant to normal bodily compounds like vitamins, minerals, amino acids and hormones. I recently attended a 6-day conference that taught me otherwise. Since then I have seen the results of normalizing the body’s response to these and other substances. Every substance has its own specific energetic frequency. When your body is imbalanced, it may not recognize or appropriately respond to the frequencies of various substances. We can call these disrupting items “stressors. It is easy to see a pesticide, heavy metal, pollen or dander as a stressor, but a vitamin, mineral or hormone? How could this be? It seems that our complex environment, filled with electromagnetic fields, pollutants, heavy metals, pollens, pesticides and herbicides (not to mention the high stress modern lifestyle) taxes the body to the extent that the it gets confused about what is normal and how to utilize and manage internal and external compounds.

The more exposure we have to stressing energies from foods, electromagnetic fields, pollens, dander and chemicals, the more we store these stressing energies in our cells, leading to homeostatic imbalance. The result is a multitude of health conditions, including allergic reactions, hormonal imbalance, depression, fatigue and digestive troubles. Intolerance elimination is a simple, natural and noninvasive modality that helps normalize and restore homeostasis or balance. Once achieved, the body is then able to more efficiently use healthful nutrients and discharge toxic substances leading to fewer reactions and greater vitality. Patients report no longer reacting to dander, plants and pollens. Those with food intolerance (including gluten) report being able to eat those foods without symptoms. Those with type II diabetes report lower sugar levels and needing less medication. Intolerance elimination is a powerful and simple therapy has completely changed the way I see the body and practice naturopathic medicine.

On Wednesday, May 30, Dan and Louise Shynuk of Cranbrook were recognized in Victoria for their outstanding achievements as Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) Air Volunteers of the Year, as part of the Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer (PSLV) awards from Emergency Management BC. “There really isn’t enough that can be said about folks like Dan and Louise. They’re selÀess, brave, skilled, and incredibly good at what they do. It’s an understatement to say that we’re lucky to have them in our town of Cranbrook. It was a pleasure to host them in Victoria and recognize their contributions, but they know that the real thanks come from the hearts of those lives they so courageously touch,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Dan and Louise Shynuk are valuable contributors to the Cranbrook PEP Air program. Dan, a pilot, and Louise, a navigator, spotter, and recently appointed Air Deputy for the Cranbrook area, have each provided over 18 years of reliable, around-theclock volunteer service in support of Civil Air Search and Rescue in their region. Both Dan and Louise are committed to their responsibilities as evidenced by providing pilot services to all ¿ve search taskings in the Southeast Zone, as well as navigator and spotter support to three of the taskings over the last 12

In addition, Dan and Louise are committed to ongoing training as they have formally participated in 29 training sessions, 80 hours of Àying and 77 hours of classroom instruction over the last year, in addition to a signi¿cant investment of informal personal learning time. They were members of a 4-person crew that placed second in the provincial air search competition in 2011. Their contributions have had direct positive social and economic impacts on searches in the Toby Creek and Estella Mine areas, as well as in numerous other SAR Air missions undertaken during their lengthy and commendable PEP Air volunteer career. They are regarded as the “glue” of the Cranbrook PEP Air Program – a formidable team that cannot be matched. PSLV volunteers lead air and ground searches, e.g.: helping the victims of serious car accidents, setting up networks of

volunteer teams and coordinating services for victims of natural disasters. British Columbia’s diverse and rugged geography and numerous outdoor recreational opportunities have led to more recorded search and rescue incidents than in other parts of the country. Approximately 4,700 registered search and rescue volunteers throughout the province are organized into teams. They respond to over 1,000 searches province wide annually. In any given year, search and rescue groups in B.C. respond to nearly 1,000 incidents involving over 1,300 missing (lost) or injured persons. PEP Air’s primary function is to assist Canadian Forces during search and rescue missions when additional resources are required. Currently, the organization includes over 100 aircraft crewed by more than 900 pilots, spotters and navigators.

First impressions can make all the difference in selling your home Did you know that most potential buyers form an opinion of the home they are visiting in the first 90 seconds? That 90 percent

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.

Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore. BCUOMA is a non-for-profit organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers. Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.

ONE DROP MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

2011 RECOVERY RATES

By recycling your used oil and antifreeze products, you’re playing an important role in preserving our environment for future generations. As of July 1, 2011 antifreeze and antifreeze containers have been included within the broader recycling program. From the 10 million litres of automotive antifreeze sold in BC each year, about 45% will be available for collection and recycling. Please check for a collection facility near you.
