Bomb scare shuts down ferry sailings, forces evacuation

Students in Nanaimo made their stage debut with a black light puppet show Friday. The show, held at Beban Park Social Centre, was the premiere performance by the 20 K-7 students in Nanaimo taking courses through the Navigate Fine Arts Academy. Navigate is a fully funded and accredited B.C. school, which operates as a division of the North Island Distance Education School. “I’m teaching kids how to take concepts and use puppetry to communicate,” said Kevin Flesher, instructor. The students created the paper puppets from their imaginations and developed the dialogue and music for the production, which was based on the Chinese version of Stone Soup. The folk tale is about three travelling monks who arrive in a village of unwelcoming people who are, at first, unwilling to share their food. The monks announce they will simply make stone soup, which tastes wonderful, and toss rocks into a pot of boiling water. The monks then convince curious villagers into giving them ingredients to complete the soup. Before long they’ve cooked up a big feast enjoyed by everyone in the village. The performance is similar to a shadow play or silhouette puppet show, but performed under ultra-violet lighting. The puppeteers, dressed in black in a darkened room, cannot be seen by the audience, but the puppets coloured with paints that glow under UV light shine brightly.

A weekend bomb scare aboard a B.C. Ferries vessel forced passengers to abandon ship Saturday. B.C. Ferries received a call from an anonymous caller shortly after 3 p.m. saying there was a bomb aboard the M.V. Queen of Coquitlam, which was about to set sail from the Departure Bay terminal. The vessel’s passengers were evacuated and the aerodrome at Brechin Point was also shut down. Bomb sniffing dogs, from the RCMP and from B.C. Ferries, were brought aboard to search for explosives. Nanaimo RCMP Marine Unit and Nanaimo Harbour Commission vessels kept the waters around the ferry terminal clear of boaters while the search was carried out. The RCMP’s Explosives Disposal Unit was kept on standby in case a bomb was found. Police also ordered several regional transit buses to shuttle passengers to Beban Park Social Cetnre, where city employees and volunteers with the Nanaimo Emergency Program had set up a reception centre. Karen Lindsay, Nanaimo Emergency Program coordinator, said the centre received about 500 passengers plus 50 dogs that were aboard the ferry. “It’s essentially like a comfort centre or an area where they could congregate everybody,” Lindsay said. “They were without vehicles – we had walk-ons – and it wasn’t as if they had access to their cars.” Lindsay said the reception centre, which provided coffee, water and seating for the passengers, was set up within about 30 minutes after emergency program staff received the call at about 3:30 p.m. “Nanaimo RCMP asked that we take the passengers off-premises so they went to the rec centre,” said Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries spokeswoman. “The police brought in one dog and we have a contract with a company to do sniffing at the terminal and they brought in two more dogs to search the ship.” ◆ See ‘NO BOMB’ /4

Bryant Mclean, 9, who is hearing impaired and learning-delayed because of a rare genetic disorder, shows off his puppet Fisherman Dude Bob, following a performance at Beban Park Social Centre Friday. April Gogo, his mother, said Mclean’s participation in the production represents a huge leap forward in his development.

Flesher, 39, is a professional educator and children’s entertainer who moved to Comox from Alberta, where he developed educational conferences. “It’s really good for kids, no matter how shy they are or how uncomfortable they are with performing, to

perform without feeling like they’re putting themselves out there too far,” he said. “You’ve always got those kids who are really out there and want to perform and those who would rather die and this, everybody can do it.” ◆ See ‘PERFORMANCE’ /4

Rally opposes budget bill She is upset with the enormity of the bill and specifically environmental cuts, which Ericksson says will create problems overseeing environmental issues, adding there needs to be more transparency and accountability. She said top marine toxicologists are being fired and environmental protections are at risk. “There will be nobody to monitor marine pollution,” Ericksson said. “How do you make appropriate decisions if you don’t have scientists? It’s very short-sighted.” Suzanne Sarioglu also came from Thetis Island and said the government is making decisions based on the economy, not good governance. “This government is really a government that is sponsoring profits and big business and not its people,” she said. Opponents of Bill C-38 say it will gut a long list of Canadian laws and protections, including environmental and fisheries regulations, immigration rules and will make changes to Old Age Security and employment insurance, which will be detrimental to Canadian society. For more information on Bill C-38, please go to www. parl.gc.ca and click on the bills before parliament link.

BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Nearly 100 protesters gathered Saturday in Nanaimo to voice their opposition to the federal Conservatives’ omnibus budget legislation, Bill C-38. The crowd assembled outside Nanaimo-Alberni Conservative MP James Lunney’s office. The protest was attended by residents and members of the Mid-Island Chapter of the Council of Canadians and was part of a campaign by LeadNow, an independent advocacy organization which aims to bring Canadians together to create progress through democracy. Ashta Cormier, who was among those assembled, said the only reason the bill would be accepted by Canadians will be that many don’t know what is in the legislation. “So many things are wrong with that bill. The issues are grouped and there is not enough time to deliberate anything,” she said. “The government is pushing it through no matter what and it’s not fair – it’s not democratic. The debates are shutdown. There is no debate anymore. It’s undemocratic fundamentally.” Ann Ericksson travelled from Thetis Island near Chemainus to attend.

security video. Tips from people who viewed the image led Nanaimo RCMP Property Crime Unit to the suspect’s residence on Highland Boulevard where they arrested a 36-year-old man. Police only found a few of the missing clubs at the time of the arrest, but later recovered the remaining clubs and returned them to their owner Friday. Police also found two other sets of clubs, one believed stolen during a break-in at Nanaimo Golf Club May 8. Police are still trying to find the owner of the remaining set. The clubs are in a black M5 golf bag, which contains a variety of irons and two putters. Anyone with information about the clubs is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP Property Crime Unit at 250-7542345. The suspect was released on a promise to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Aug. 21.

A Vancouver Island University professor plans to be part of a constitutional court challenge of provincial legislation that forced him to step down from the university’s board of governors last month. Dominique Roelants, chief steward of the VIU Faculty Association, was advised May 17 by Mike Brown, board chairman, that he is no longer a member of the board due to an amendment to the University Act through Bill 18, which became law in March. The amendment states that a member of a staff association’s executive body who takes part in negotiations with the board on behalf of the association, or adjudicates disputes regarding members of that employee group, is not eligible to be or remain a member of the board. Roelants said the law violates his constitutional rights, which is why the provincial faculty association body, the Federation of PostSecondary Educators of B.C., plans to challenge it in B.C. Supreme Court. “Bill 18 is just about preventing activists in the faculty association from being on the board, which is a denial of our freedom of association,” he said. Roelants said he’s not sure the law even applies to him – while he is on the executive, he is not head of the contract negotiating committee and the Post Secondary Employers’ Association

of B.C. is the bargaining agent for VIU, not the board. While he advocates on behalf of faculty in disputes, he does not have the final say in a decision, Roelants added. Advanced Education Minister Naomi Yamamoto was unavailable for comment, but stated during debate in the legislature that the amendment guards against conflict of interest. Until now, Roelants said the board dealt with conflicts of interest by having a separate labour relations committee that excludes employee representatives and board members can excuse themselves when conflicts arise. “There’s a lot of work the board does that is irrelevant in terms of faculty business,” he said. The 15-member board of governors at VIU includes two faculty representatives elected by faculty members. Brown said there was no option but to remove Roelants and announce a byelection. “The law states that he is no longer eligible to be on the board,” he said. Brown said the board has to approve any contract negotiated, so it is involved in negotiations. Cindy Oliver, president of the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of B.C., said the law is unprecedented in Canada and Roelants is one of three people the organization knows of who are affected. “It’s complete nonsense,” she said. “This conflict of interest is such a weak argument – anyone could find themselves in conflict and there are processes to deal with it.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Performance assists education

◆ From /1 Bryant Mclean, 9, is learning delayed and suffers from hearing impairment, both symptoms of a rare chromosome 3 deletion disorder. His mother, April Gogo, began home schooling her son in January and said he responds better and is advancing more quickly than he did while attending public school. He’s happier too.

ALMANAC

His puppet, Fisherman Dude Bob, contributed a tasty fish head to the pot of stone soup. His performance and participation in creating the production represents a big and rapid leap forward in his development. “Traditional education wasn’t working for him. He needed to be hands-on, moving around, doing things like this,” Gogo said.

“Usually traffic on a Saturday night is not too busy, it does tend to taper off,” said Marshall. “We did have an overload off that 8:15 [p.m.] sailing, but it was all cleared on the 9:30.” B.C. Ferries had a bomb threat in 2007 and subsequently implemented additional security measures at terminals. Marshall said the corporation is pleased with the way the crew handled Saturday’s situation. “They did a very professional job,” she said. Po l i c e p r ov i d e d information updates about the status of the situation and when people could expect to be on their way. “It almost acted, in essence, as an information centre, a shelter and just somewhere where they could sit, talk and get infor mation where they weren’t sitting out in the cold in a parking lot,” Lindsay said. The investigation was handed over to N a n a i m o RC M P ’s Serious Crimes Unit. Const. Gary O’Brien said there are no new developments in the investigation. “Nothing that we can speak of,” O’Brien said. “We have information based on the phone call, so we have to look at that, but there’s only so much we can provide other than it was a call saying there was a bomb on board. There isn’t a local cause Matthews hasn’t been involved with in one shape or form, said Steve Arnett, Nanaimo Youth Services Association executive director, who has known Matthews for years. “Carol Matthews is the voice of social justice and has been the voice for years,” said Ar nett. “What she does is stand up and become the voice until you can be the voice.” Her tireless dedication as a community leader, advocate and educator are some of the reasons Matthews was chosen as one of 14 British Columbians to receive the Order of B.C. this year. “I was very surprised,” said Matthews. “It is a great honour.” Getting recognition for work in the community is “really special” and there are a lot of people doing work in the community that tend to go unnoticed, Matthews said. “There are lots of people who do volunteer work, but also people that just do things at the local level with their friends and

community to make this a better place to live,” she said. “Where we can have the most influence is in our neighbourhoods and in our community and they are small things that often make the difference.” Matthews said she is most proud of connecting people to each other or to ideas, because you never know where small connections can lead. “Sometimes great things happen just f r o m ve r y s m a l l efforts,” she said. Matthews worked as a hospital mental health and social worker, the executive director of Nanaimo Family Life Association, dean of human services and community education at Malaspina UniversityCollege (now Vancouver Island University) from 1988-1999 and served on numerous boards, including the Nanaimo Port Authority, B.C. Association of Social Workers and the Social Planning and

Research Council. She is also the author of several books. “You can find Carol’s stamp on pretty much any service in town,” said Coun. Diane Brennan, a long-time friend. Brennan said she appreciates the friendship with Matthews over the years, adding she is a source of wise counsel. “Carol is really funny and has amazing wit,” said Brennan. Ar nett said Mat-

thews was instrumental in the campaign to purchase a new site for Nanaimo Family Life on Townsite Road. “She is so kind – kind and wise,” added Arnett. Matthews will receive the Order of British Columbia during an investiture ceremony Sept. 6 at Government House in Victoria. Since the Order was introduced in 1989, 331 people have received the honour. The order

was created to recognize people who served with great distinction and excelled in endeavours to benefit people in the province or elsewhere. The Order represents the highest form of recognition the province can extend to its citizens.

decaying playground in a barren field was all children had to play on at Forest Drive Park. Now, thanks to the work of volunteers under the guidance of the City of Nanaimo, the park has new playground equipment that’s fully accessible to people with all levels of mobility. “There’s so much potential for it,” said Michelle Sloan, a coordinator of the project. The new playground equipment, chosen for its woodsy look and feel to blend in with the character of the neighbourhood and park, went up Saturday with the help of volunteers. It features a climbing wall, plus transfer stations, so people with mobility issues can wheel right up to the equipment and use it. Sloan said she used to watch a neighbour wheel over and simply sit at the side of the playground, unable to

reach the equipment surrounded by pea gravel. “It would make me so sad,” Sloan said. “She couldn’t use any of the equipment.” Although the young woman no longer lives in the neighbourhood, Sloan said it was important to her and the committee of six to ensure the playground met the needs of everyone in the area. Forest Drive Park is found between Merideth Road and Dufferin Crescent, in the hospital district behind The Willows complex. The 0.2-hectare park was created in 1959 through a subdivision development – not much was done since. The wooden equipment had a metal slide and a merry-go-round – “Everything that they no longer make for parks because they’re so dangerous,” Sloan said. City staff approached the neighbours with information on its Volunteer in Parks program and the neighbours ran with it. They developed a plan, which included not only new playground equipment, but also a bike path, hard courts for basketball and a community garden with raised vegetable beds. The committee presented its vision to the city, securing a grant to add to donations of cash and in-kind to a total of $50,000.

“It was an older park,” said Kirsty MacDonald, parks planner with the city. “We wait until there’s interest in the neighbourhood.” Part of the refurbishment included installing a water main and pipes to provide irrigation for the community garden, as well as improving drainage. “It had terrible drainage – it was boggy all the time,” Sloan said. Now that the playground is in, the next phase is to fundraise for the bike path and basketball courts, which is estimated at $15,000. Money is also needed for landscaping, as the park currently has no shade trees. Further additions could include a multi-purpse court and a gazebo or shelter for events. The project also brought the community together, connecting neighbours and allowing children to get to know each other. More information can be found on the group’s Facebook page – search Forest Drive Park. Donations of cash can be made to the City of Nanaimo, with Forest Drive Park written in the memo line. A tax receipt will be issued. Other groups in Nanaimo interested in the Volunteers in Parks program can find information on the city’s website at www. nanaimo.ca. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo residents will snug up their laces next to Special Olympians and representatives from all branches of local law enforcement at this year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Community law enforcement torch runs, which started in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas, became major international fundraisers that generate millions of dollars annually to support Special Olympics. This year all law enforcement agencies in Nanaimo – including military personnel, sheriffs, B.C. Corrections Branch officers, RCMP members and their supporters – will join the public and Special Olympians for Nanaimo’s second running of the event, which leaves the starting line from Maffeo Sutton Park at noon Saturday (June 9). The five-kilometre run/walk raises awareness for Special Olympics in British Columbia and helps the 130 Special Olympians from the region with training and coaching programs, program development and travel to national and world competitions. Participants will also meet some of Nanaimo’s Special Olympians, like Dennis Lynch, who won gold in cross country skiing at the Canadian Special Olympics 2012 national winter games in St. Albert, Alta., and Ray Lappeleinen, who won silver in track and field running events at the 2011 Special Olympics Summer Games in Greece. The Nanaimo Tigers floor hockey team also won gold at this year’s national winter games. “These athletes are deserving of the same opportunities that everyone should have,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “They have overcome many obstacles in their lives and through this program we are giving them the same opportunities that are presented to everyone in our community.” Strollers and pets are welcome at this family-oriented trip around Nanaimo’s waterfront. Registration is $25 per person and includes an official event shirt. Save-On-Foods will host a barbecue by donation after the run, plus there will be fun interactive games. To register, please call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-755-3257.

Budget sneaks in major j cuts If recent news is any indication, many Canadians are not happy with their federal government. Recent stories in this paper include today’s coverage of a weekend protest at Conservative MP James Lunney’s office over Bill C-38, the omnibus budget legislation introduced in March. Similar protests were staged across the country, while campaigns against the bill are mounting through letter-writing and other forms of pressure on the government, such as wearing green on Canada Day, instead of the traditional proud red of the Maple Leaf. The outcry arises from the fact the budget bill contains far more than the financial facts and figures officially presented by the Tories earlier this spring. Instead, the more people delve into the budget, the more they realize it’s an attempt to quietly gut many programs and services provided by the government. The budget quietly (sneakily, many argue, since they’re buried in a 400-plus page tome) makes changes to more than 70 laws with massive implications. Other recent stories we’ve covered outline cutbacks with severe implications for immigration services, community archives and environmental protection. Other affected sectors include employment insurance and Old Age Security, and health care. For some sectors, such as immigration, the cuts will result in added pressure on programs and services provided by the non-profit sector. Ironically, the budget also includes $8 million to fund Canada Revenue Agency audits of charities, considered by some as a move to silence advocacy and free speech on key environmental issues. The Conservatives can use their majority to ram everything through. And by packaging it all in an omnibus bill, to defeat one portion means to defeat everything. Some argue that’s exactly what is needed. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Having a little fun keeping the kid inside alive helps keeps the old guy outside ticking. *** My heart goes out to Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue members on the death of two colleagues during a training exercise Sunday on the Skookumchuck Narrows near Egmont, B.C., on the Sunshine Coast. My wife and I had a chance to see the rapids during a cycling trip of the coast last summer, and it was both awesome and terrifying at the same time. The amount of water that runs through the narrows on high tide is mind-boggling. These search and rescue volunteers lost their lives training to help others who might be in distress. If nothing else, the tragedy should send a message to the federal government on the real dangers of living on the West Coast and cutting back on marine rescue stations will only put others at risk. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Blue world exists in our backyard BY LAURIE GOURLAY

As Canadian Environment Week begins, Nanaimo is joining hands with the federal government and the international community, to proclaim World Oceans Day, and Rivers to Oceans Week, June 8-14. And all of us are rolling up our collective sleeves in anticipation of June’s 20th anniversary of the Rio Earth Summit – excited and a little nervous as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development seeks a worldly balance for ecological, economic, social and cultural goals. So what does this mean for us? In one go, Nanaimo has wrapped up local, national and global goals. Not bad for the up and coming Harbour City, poised on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, especially as we ponder strategic plans and priorities for short and long-term prosperity. How might we, a coastal city, nurture such good fortune and the national and international friends who could help us with our hopes and dreams for the good life? Sure, we have the five-year

plans drafted or underway, but what of our common future and our great-great grandchildren? With Nanaimo’s proclamation, we’re recognizing the benefits from our rich and diverse coast – from living by the largest estuary on Vancouver Island, on the rim of the Salish Sea. As the Nanaimo River endlessly spills nutrients into the eelgrass beds, and the salmon return, so too are many of our basic needs met, our fisheries and local food security strengthened, our waters replenished. A walk along the downtown waterfront, catching the ferry to a Gulf Island, strolling the beach when the tide’s out, breathing in salty-fresh air, awaiting the fishing season, and not kayaking in the stormy winds and high seas; the coast is in our blood – a natural part of every day’s work, commerce and family outing. The coast is our silent benefactor, providing for us day after day. We’re coastal proud, and partners, without even thinking about it Lucky us, living in a para-

dise of rivers and ocean. And so why not recognize World Oceans Day – a day that Canada first proposed to the Earth Summit in 1992 as a way to better understand biodiversity, as well as the benefits of healthy fisheries and productive marine habitat as resources come under increasing pressure world-wide. And so, too, Rivers to Ocean Week, with Environment Canada’s support, helps us look at water cycles and conservation, to the protection and restoration of our coastal waters, estuaries and rivers. You may not be surprised to learn then that a local campaign wants to see global goals for sustainable development secured locally, by way of extending the proposed B.C./Canada National Marine Conservation Area for the Southern Strait of Georgia – around Gabriola and into the Nanaimo estuary. With our federal Environment Minister Peter Kent willing to consider boundary change proposals until this fall, Nanaimo and region still have an opportunity to gain the benefits

and financial partnership of senior levels of government that an NMCA affords. So fellow coastal residents of some of the most beautiful, diverse and bountiful lands and waters in the whole wide world, that’s a lot to think about. With the world and our mid-Island coast in mind, you might just want to sneak a little time away this June. Breathe the fresh air, take off your shoes and stroll along your favourite stretch of ocean shore, or just sit and watch the river go by. Canadian Environment Week and World Oceans Day have come a-calling, and the City of Nanaimo has declared us friends, and good neighbours. Free events planned include a pot luck dinner in Cedar, at St Philips’ church on Friday (June 8) and a morning estuary walk on Sunday (June 10), meeting at Raines Road. ◆ Laurie Gourlay is president of the Mid Island Sustainability and Stewardship Initiative. Ideas on coexistence more useful than vilification

To the Editor, Re: Protests shine spotlight on skewed priorities, Science Matters, May 31. I think the way David Suzuki (or Faisal Moola) makes use of both the anarchistic Montreal rioters/ students and the incoherent Occupy movement is interesting. He even sympathizes with them as he correlates their activities with his own anti-government/anti-corporation agenda. However, I’m not sure that identifying with those people would add to anyone’s credibility. I agree with Suzuki in that, “The Montreal protesters are drawing attention to a growing trend”. But I see the trend leaning more

toward a narcissistic entitlement mentality rather than any sense of responsibility or concern for the economy. Although, I would be in favour of lower post-secondary tuition fees if our debt/ deficit were eliminated. To say that, “Corporations are not people” doesn’t coincide with my dictionary, and obviously no Suzuki column would mention the contributions corporations make to our economy, like millions of jobs and investment opportunities for individuals and pension funds. I’m skeptical about coastal First Nations communities that are “desperate for jobs and economic development”, but they find that “some things are more important

than money”? Could these be communities that are also funded by American interests in return for obstructing the Northern Gateway pipeline? As expected, there’s no mention of the many First Nation people who have trained and found good jobs working in the oilsands, nor of those who have expressed an interest in training and finding work on Northern Gateway. Rather than continual vilification of government and corporations, ideas on how they can coexist with the environment without shutting down progress would be more useful. Jim Corder Nanaimo

Fiddle concert benefits church

There are songs from years past that stir powerful memories for each of us, songs that transport us to a place and time when life was very different. These are the songs that Geoff Horrocks is most moved by as a performer. Horrocks is a singer and pianist with a rich and resonant voice and an endearing manner with his listeners. He sings pieces from the 1930s onwards, familiar favourites presented in his own unique and memorable way. Trish Clair is a classically trained violinist who has long felt the pull of traditional and popular music, and who shares Horrocks’s love of standard old songs.

Clair is best known for founding and directing the thriving VanIsle Fiddlers, a community fiddle program which currently has more than 50 members spanning all ages and abilities. In performance Horrocks and Clair present a variety of songs and fiddle tunes in a lighthearted and enjoyable show that appeals to old and young alike. Horrocks and Clair perform June 15, 7 p.m., at St. Andrew’s United Church. Tickets $12. Proceeds benefit the church’s repair and restoration projects. Tickets available at Lobelia’s Lair, Tom Lee Music, West Coast Classic Floral and the church.

By Sharon Hanna Since trying kale chips at Powerhouse Foods in downtown Nanaimo, I’ve been addicted. Needless to say I was delighted when The Book of Kale landed on my desk, as I assumed – correctly – a recipe and directions for making the chips at home would be included. And so is everything else you could possibly think to ask about kale. Some things I learned: there’s more varieties than the one sold in the grocery store. Some even come in bright purple. Ancient Egyptians ate kale, so did Chinese and the Celts, early settler on the British Isles. Author Sharon Hanna digs into the history of the vegetable to unearth its past and why it’s fallen in and out of favour over the centuries. As for right now, kale is very much in favour for its abundance of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to grow, according to Hanna. A belief I’m going to test in the next few weeks in my own garden – if this rain ever lets up. I’m also going to try Hanna’s 80 recipes included in the book, from simple salads to main dishes. Like any good cookbook, it should not only offer delicious recipes, but also inspire cooks to try new ways of making old ones. I’ve got a recipe for swiss chard manicotti that’s going to get the kale treatment, too. That is, after I’ve made my first (and second, or possibly third) batch of kale chips. –Melissa Fryer Published by: Harbour Publishing Available at: Local bookstores List price: $26.95

Dr. Eric Cooper

Dr. Eric Cooper passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2011, at the age of 89 years. Eric, a resident of Nanaimo, BC, died quietly at the NRGH Palliative Care Unit. Eric was born in Royton, England on August 6, 1922. He attended Medical School in Liverpool and married Betty Wainman after completion of his education, on July 12, 1945, and spent time in East Africa during WWII as a Royal Army Medical OfďŹ cer prior to returning to Stockport, England. In 1958 they moved to Victoria, BC, with their two daughters, and then settled in Nanaimo in 1960. It is here in Nanaimo that Eric made a name for himself as a very gifted and compassionate surgeon, retiring at age 65. Eric was predeceased just 14 months ago by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty, and 20 years ago by his brother Jack. He survived by his daughter Jane, and her husband Ron Perala, of Cedar, BC; daughter Sally, and her husband Richard Dutka, of Cedar, BC; by his grandchildren, Cathy Winsby, of Nanaimo, Brooke Dutka and Maiggen Dutka, of Vancouver, BC, and Kyle Dutka and his wife Nikki, of Ladysmith BC, and by his great grandchildren Brianna, Nick, and Odessa. He is also survived by a number of relatives in England. Eric will also be remembered by numerous friends both in Canada and England. The family wishes to thank the staff at the NRGH Palliative Care Unit for their support and care during Eric’s time there. They also wish to thank the neighbors and friends who meant a great deal to him over the last year following the loss of his wife Betty. There will be no service by request. sports Timbermen out of luck in road loss BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Motocross racers Lance Thompson, front, and Jared Stock are already getting muddy by the second lap during MX1 competition at the Canadian Motosport Racing Corporation’s Motocross Nationals series stop at the Wastelands Motocross Park on Sunday.

RAINS DON’T dampen riders’ enthusiasm.

A downpour turned the Wastelands Motocross Park into a mud puddle on Sunday, but it didn’t slow down the action very much. The Nanaimo venue hosted thousands of motorbike enthusiasts for the Canadian Motosport Racing Corporation’s Monster Energy Motocross Nationals. Matt Goerke won the

MX1 main event as the rider from Daytona Beach, Fla., won both his motos after taking the lead off the start of both races. T h r e e - t i m e C M RC national champion Colton Facciotti finished second in both motos and Bobby Kiniry took third place overall after finishing fifth, then third. Fan favourite Dusty Klatt of Campbell River had to settle for seventh overall after finishing 12th, then sixth. R a c i n g w a s m o re unpredictable in MX2

competition, as the two motos played out quite differently. Teddy Maier was the winner, as he followed up a seventh-place finish in the first moto with a firstplace result in the second moto. Kyle Beaton placed second overall, finishing second, then sixth, and Jared Allison was third as he came sixth in the first moto and third in the second. Jeremy Medaglia won the first MX2 moto of the day but a 12th-place result in the second moto left him just off the podium.

THE NEWS BULLETIN

Matt Goerke of Daytona Beach, Fla. wins the MX1 division at CMRC Motocross Nationals on Sunday.

The Victoria Shamrocks found a lot of holes in the Nanaimo Timber men’s game. The Coastal Windows Timbermen were defeated 15-10 on Friday in Victoria. T-men star Scott Ranger scored seven goals, but there were few other bright spots for the visitors. “Not to blame goalies or not to blame offence, but we just couldn’t get the plays we needed when we needed them,” said the Nanaimo captain. “We’d get a couple goals and then they’d get a soft goal, or they’d get one or two goals and then we’d throw the ball away on offence. A lot of mental mistakes, but the good thing is we can clean it up real quick.” The Timbermen scored the first goal of the game 12 seconds into the first period, but couldn’t sustain pressure. “We never once got the momentum,” said Art Webster, T-men coach. “We’d score a goal, I thought we were coming back, and then bang, they’d bang in another one.” Webster didn’t think either of his goalies were seeing the ball well. “I had to yank ’em both … and that’s not acceptable,” the coach said. Other than Ranger’s seven-goal effort, other Nanaimo scorers were Cayle Ratcliff, Pat Smith and Cory Conway. ◆ See ‘TIMBERMEN’ /26

Your opinion matters. That’s why we’d like to hear from you before proposing any changes. ICBC is updating the way we set premiums for Basic vehicle insurance coverage. You’ve told us the system would be fairer if lower-risk drivers paid less for their insurance and higher-risk drivers paid more. We agree. Before making any changes to our current system, we’d like your input. We’re considering several options that may impact what you pay for your Basic insurance in the future. Your feedback will go into the final changes that we propose for fairer Basic vehicle insurance pricing.

Victoria Shamrocks player Corey Small goes for a shot on goal on Nanaimo Timbermen goalie Zak Boychuk during Friday’s Western Lacrosse Association game at Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria. The Shamrocks won 15-10.

Timbermen want to see more effort ◆ From /25 Scott Ranger’s sevengoal game raised his league-leading total to 20. No other player in the league is in doubledigits in that category. Ranger’s seventh goal came on a penalty shot. “I think I’m 0-for-4 on penalty shots up until tonight, so it was nice to bury that one,” he said. “I was thinking about it the whole way down.”

Art Webster said he told the Timbermen in the dressing room after Friday’s game that he needs more guys to play with Ranger’s effort. “Scotty played at the top of his game like he does every single night,” said the coach. At the other end of the arena, Shamrocks coach Bob Heyes, a for mer Timber men goalie, thought his team did a good job in

all areas except shutting down Ranger. “Our offence finally clicked, goaltending came up with key saves. Defensively our transition game was awesome – it kept them off of their game a little bit,” said Heyes. GAME ON … The senior A Timbermen play Sunday (June 10) against the Burnaby Lakers at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
