The wind-up of spring sitting in the British Columbia legislature leaves some laws changing, some bills waiting and some people wondering when the MLAs will sit again. Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett says she doesn’t know yet if Premier Christy Clark will resume legislative sessions this fall. After strong rumours the legislature might not return until 2013, B.C. Cariboo moose population plummeting Carole Rooney Free Press

The moose population in the Cariboo and certain other regions in the province has declined significantly, according to government estimates. The statistics and related potential for moose-harvesting cuts were recently released in a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) fact sheet. However, the indications of reduced hunting allocations have some resident hunters questioning the province’s sampling methods. South Cariboo resident Garth Lee was British Columbia Wildlife

Federation director for seven years and a member for 10 years. He has been its delegate from the Lone Butte Fish & Wildlife Association, as well as sitting on a regional advisory committee. “The government of British Columbia advertises they manage our wildlife by scientific facts,” says Lee. “The problem is that they haven’t had enough money to do very many aerial inventories.” Rodger Stewart, MFLNRO Cariboo region director of resource management, says the declining moose population in the Cariboo region was confirmed through three aerial surveys performed last year.

“Our densities have reduced substantively since the time of our last surveys seven to 10 years ago, depending on [the Cariboo area]. “Our standing crop is reduced by anywhere from 17 to 60 per cent, depending on the area, averaging something like 30 per cent over the whole region.” The problem lies in the “very substantive decrease” in the total population in the region’s land base, Stewart explains, not in the numbers of moose cow/calf pairs or bulls. The decline stems from several other factors beyond hunting, all of which are reviewed as part of the analysis, he

notes. Since management is dependent on funding, Stewart adds specific efforts may be needed to target some of those. However, Lee says in order to manage it scientifically, the inventories need to be done every year, rather than every seven years or more. The resident hunting advocate says he “doesn’t believe” the numbers on the fact sheet, and that “it’s just a way to use one count every decade or so,” as a basis to make cuts to the annual allowable harvest. “They are conservative like that because they don’t get enough counts to be confident. So, who is going to take the chanc-

Who is going to stick their neck out and liberalize any kind of a hunting season, if they’re guessing?” Stewart explains the ministry uses a standard scientific method of random statistical sampling and models used across North America to estimate both adult or calf moose populations by gender. Also used are the annual harvest surveys of hunter’s success rates and time lengths to bag their moose, he adds. “We’ve found it correlates rather nicely to the historic information we’ve got from more detailed surveys.” See MOOSE… page A3

SHORT TA K E S Sprinkling reduced School District #27 trustees have cut back on the number of school fields to be maintained regularly during the summer. School board chair Will Van Osch says some fields identified as having little activity during the summer break will see reductions in (automatic) watering, and possibly mowing and trimming as a result. All the fields that are typically well used will have regular maintenance continued, he adds. The district’s maintenance groundskeeper will monitor the results, Van Osch says, and if the overall health of a field is in jeopardy from lack of water or if prolonged dry spells occur, the groundskeeper has the authority to resume irrigation. About 30 area citizens gathered at Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo MP Cathy McLeod’s 100 Mile House office to voice their concerns about the federal Budget Implementation Bill currently before Parliament. Bill C-38 amends more than 70 laws, including several key environmental protection acts, provoking similar protests at 54 confirmed Conservative MP offices countrywide. South Cariboo resident Christine Jordaan joined the protest, and says some elements of Bill C-38 are “deeply disturbing.” “I find it shocking that legislation can be amended so profoundly in a bill that is termed a ‘budget bill’. C-38 is a large, complex piece of legislation.” Combining all these changes into one piece of legislation does not allow for transparency and debate, she explains. “I believe that Bill C-38 is undermining the protections that are currently in place, which help to ensure environmental responsibility.” However, McLeod says it’s not uncommon to combine so many acts under one bill. “I always like to hear other points of view.” McLeod recommends concerned constituents read the first nine pages of Bill C-38, which she says is a “great summary of what we’re doing and where we’re going.” However, federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May recently released what she called “dangerous and damaging impacts” that Bill C-38 will

have on Canadians’ environment, health and jobs. According to May, fundamental changes will be made to legislation ranging from environmental acts and the Kyoto Protocol to fisheries and nuclear safety acts. “In spite of the fact that most Canadians have no idea how seriously Bill C-38 will affect their lives, the Senate is about to begin hearings so Conservative senators can vote on it as soon as possible. This railroading version of democracy is tragic for Canada.” Patricia Spencer also joined the local protest, and says the bill is an “incredible assault” on both democracy and the environment. “I think every Canadian should be concerned. The intention of this bill is to centralize power in Ottawa and bypass a lot of our democratic processes, such as parliamentary processes.” Jordaan adds the bill also “seriously threatens” future generations. “I am asking our MP Cathy McLeod to vote against Bill C-38 in the interests of breaking it up, and providing a fair review of all the changes proposed by parliamentary committee.” The budget bill is available online at www.parl.gc.ca under LEGISinfo links.

his department schedules the frequency of the moose counts according to the limitations in the ministry’s budget. There are 20 management unit sub-zones in the Cariboo, but he notes not all of those are left uncounted for five to

10 years. “We try to do one to two every year. We try to get to every one every five years, but we can’t always do that. “We’ve tried to focus lately on being able to survey management unit sub-zones that haven’t

been surveyed in a while.” Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett notes that in her opinion, wildlife management “needs a higher priority and focus” and more moose studies should be funded and performed.

“I know that [MFLNRO] staff does a good job with what they work with, and good scientific work is done, but I support the fact we need more [funding for] wildlife management.” This is part one of a two-part series on moose populations in the Cariboo.

BILLS… from page A1 Barnett says the large number of bills pushed through the House late in the sitting was partly due to the time staff needed to dismantle the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). While Barnett says she believes the legislation had adequate debate, the local MLA notes there was minimal time of less than 30 minutes allotted for some bills because others were dragged out by the Oppositions’ arguments. Some much-debated bills included three, long days of “incredible” hours for discussing the reintroduction of the Provincial Sales Tax (PST), she adds. The NDP also objected to a third chamber that was

opened so that, for the first time in history, three debates were held simultaneously. Barnett explains it was not only efficient but it also allowed more debate time. “I know it was very lengthy. The Opposition can complain all they want about [lack of] proper time for debate, but we had three houses going and we sat until 9 o’clock three nights. There was lots of time for debate.” Anything that uses the MLAs time spent in Victoria more effectively also saves taxpayers money, she adds. “Every day we sit, people get a per diem.... When we’re there, it’s our duty. If we’ve got to work 12-14 hours a day, then we work 12-14

hours a day.” Barnett suggests people should take a few moments to read the Hansard reports that transcribe legislative sessions, to see the “repetitious” questions of the Opposition. “The NDP spent over 21 hours and forced 10 hours of committee time debating Bill 22 –The Education Improvement Act. They delayed passage of the bill to the detriment of students and parents.” More than a dozen bills were passed at the final sitting of the approximately 30 bills passed by the

Legislative Assembly since Feb. 14, including the Education Improvement Act, the Provincial Sales Tax Act, the Family Day Act, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment Act and the Pharmaceutical Services Act. The four bills delayed include B.C. Ambulance Services restructuring, regulatory changes to disease reporting on farms, modernizing movie regulations and amendments for water used in oil and gas drilling. The local MLA adds it “amazes her” the Opposition can debate something for

“hours and hours” that they end up supporting. “I find that really difficult. I mean, if you’re opposed to something, you’re opposed to it.”

Local school trustees meet with minister

The seven trustees for School District #27 (SD27) met with Education Minister George Abbott during a recent general meeting of the British Columbia School Trustees Association (BCSTA). SD27 chair Will

Van Osch says the board was pleased to have successfully pulled off a private parlay with the minister, which was booked for 30 minutes, but ran more than an hour. “We met with [Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA] Donna Barnett prior to the meeting and expressed our

desire to be able to meet with the minister, if she could arrange that somehow and find us a slot.” Once there was confirmation a meeting would take place, the board put a plan together with some key points it wanted to discuss with Abbott, he adds.

Fords, fines and follies discussed by council COUNCIL BRIEFS Following are the highlights from the District of 100 Mile House council meeting on May 22: Fire-Rescue Ford financed 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue’s request for the purchase of a new Ford F-150 pickup was approved. While the original proposal discussed at an earlier meeting was to lease a truck, council reviewed the information gathered by staff and determined it was more costeffective to purchase the vehicle.

Paved parking A development permit was issued for drainage, excavation and compaction activities relating to the construction, paving and chain-link fencing of a parking lot behind Big Country Storage on Seventh Street. The approval requires compliance with the recommendations and provisions of a geotechnical report, which was undertaken after work was halted in January due to slope stability and various residents’ concerns. Fines laid for loose dog The bylaw enforcement Commissionaire’s Report for April noted a loose

Another dog owner was warned of potential fines after a small terrier-type pet was reported in various residents’ yards. Manhole hazard In his report, bylaw officer Harold Underhill noted a missing manhole cover on Dogwood Avenue resulted in a hazardous street opening during the Easter weekend. He immediately reported the missing lid to district management and then stood guard at the site until staff arrived to replace it.

“We went over what we were doing as far as our strategic planning goes and we talked about the disposition of assets, because the legislation... is not completely clear about the rules around [the sale] of property.” The trustees asked Abbott if he would be interested in developing a comprehensive business plan for the South End, including replacement of the aging 100 Mile Elementary School. That discussion centred on whether the board might be able to sell a piece of property to help fund the large capital project, Van Osch says, adding they were reassured by Abbott and his staff about the possibility. “They were very open to that. We didn’t propose the plan, but we went over the points we

wanted to make about what we needed to do and where we were going.” Also discussed were education funding formulas that don’t always fit the geography in the district for maintaining its small schools, Van Osch explains. “They understood that quite well. We talked about capacity utilization again and the fact that, in some cases we are never going to meet the ministry standards for receiving capital funds under [the] strategy they have right now.” The board chair says SD27 must keep some of its sparsely populated rural schools open due to the considerable distance to the next school. “The capacity in those schools, which is unused, counts against our capacity utilization [needed]

they are, they would still consider our plans with that in mind. “They were very open to it, which was a big relief to us, because as we go forward and start our plans, we don’t want to be ‘hamstrung’ by a funding formula that doesn’t work for us.”

Grad class one ‘giant family’ Lauren described the whole student population as one “big giant family” because PSO has an “unbelievably kind environment.” “I think this is because of how much the administration and teachers respect and care for the students, and also how mature and thoughtful the students at the school are. Our grad class is beautiful; I love them.” Ashton said he was truly honoured to be selected as valedictorian by his teachers and classmates. He agrees the grad class is a tight-knit group. “I grew up with most of these people, and in Grade 8, I started making new friends. Compared to other classes, the guys in this class all get along really well. “Even at the grad campout, a couple of people showed up we don’t know very well, and immediately they were part of

There is something special about the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School 2012 grad class. They have their outstanding scholars, athletes, fine arts, and socially aware students, but the grad class members also seem to be a very inclusive group of friends. Perhaps, PSO principal Vic Brett said it best. “I don’t think I’ve had a class that had such outstanding compassion. They’re just wonderful kids ... what a beautiful group. I’m going to miss them. “You always grow attached to the students during the years you’re with them, but this group of grads really care about each other and other people.” Brett noted the grad class also had some outstanding, hard-working scholars in its midst. That was evident during the May 25 graduation ceremony when he announced the highly coveted Governor General’s Medal would not be handed out that evening. This is because they have to wait until the provincial exams are written and tabulated to see if one of the students in the running for the bronze medal rises to the top. There are six students – Ben Bedford, Kirsty Bock, Ali Briggs, Lauren Sortome, and twin sisters Andrea and

Lauren Sortome and Ashton Ostrader were selected as the valedictorians for the grad ceremony. School staff selects three males and three females to be in the running for the positions at the podium during the ceremony. Then the grads vote for who they want as the valedictorians. Lauren and Ashton did an outstanding job, with a mix of humour, seriousness and appreciation that produced a lot of laughter and more than a few tears in the audience and among their classmates. Lauren said the class has done a good job of being good friends with each other. “Instead of hav-

ing strong cliques, I have always felt we can walk around and hang out with any group from the grad class. It’s super amazing for a group of teenagers to be able to do that and be that welcoming, friendly and that kind to each other.” Before the weekend before grad ceremonies, there was a grad campout, during which they tented, spent a lot of time together, talked and played games, she explained. “We all got to hang out with each other and sort of eliminate some of the barriers that we may had built up during high school, so I think that it helped a lot, too.”

Electricity theft leads to grow ops Police busted a large marijuana grow operation at Deka Lake on May 29, while investigating a complaint about the theft of electricity. The discovery was made when North District Integrated Marijuana Enforcement Task Force (NDIME) and 100 Mile House RCMP members were executing a Criminal Code search warrant for Theft of Telecommunications, which includes

electricity, on Mahood Lake Road approximately 40 kilometres east of 100 Mile House. Upon searching the property, police found two marijuanagrow operations. One was inside the residence and another was in an outbuilding, says RCMP Const. Lesley Smith, North District media relations officer. “RCMP seized 1,692 marijuana plants in various stages of growth along

with approximately eight pounds of dried marijuana bud and growing equipment.” An adult male has been arrested and faces charges of theft

ederal politics is getting stranger all the time, and more than a little bit scary. It is frightening to watch the antics of the federal Tories under Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The Conservatives had been straining at the long leash of a minority government for years, drooling at the thought of taking full control of the House of Commons. Well, their wishes have come true and they are steam rolling over the Opposition, as the federal NDP lost its leader shortly after the election and, undoubtedly, Canadians were relying on Jack Layton to temper the Tory enthusiasm. The former powerhouse federal Liberals are a shadow of what they once were, and now appear to be rudderless on the political landscape. It appears there is little opportunity to slow Mr. Harper in his push to reshape Canada. The prime minister will do what he thinks is best and folks better watch out if they get in his way. The Tories want to close the investigation on the F-35 fighter jet fiasco. (It can’t look good when our leader is travelling abroad or making deals with our southern neighbours.) It’s absolute nonsense to close the investigation when so many things went wrong in this messy affair, especially when the mismanagement of this project would be costly for the already beleaguered Canadian taxpayers. Now, the Tory government wants to push Bill C-38, the Budget Implementation Bill, through the House. It includes some six dozen laws that will significantly affect the lives of all Canadians now and into the future. The trouble is most folks, including the folks we send to Ottawa, don’t know everything that’s in the bill - let alone the fine details or the pitfalls it may create in the future. So, how do people slow down the Harper Express? They try to encourage their elected representatives to urge the prime minister to give more time to scrutinize the bill. If that doesn’t work, they do what British Columbians did when the B.C. Liberals rammed the HST down our throats. This is exactly what 30 or so concerned citizens did when they held a protest rally in front of Cathy McLeod’s office in 100 Mile House on June 2. The pebble has started rolling down the mountain.

Other side of Family Day On May 29, the British Columbia Legislature debated Bill 53, enabling the creation of B.C.’s new Family Day holiday. While many are happily anticipating the arrival of an extra holiday next February, little has been said about the costs that will be borne by B.C.’s small-business sector or to taxpayers. To small business, Family Day doesn’t bring a relaxing break, but rather major pressure. An averagesized small business paying B.C.’s average wage will face an extra $1,135 in labour costs alone. The global cost to all smalland medium-sized businesses is an estimated $42 million. Add to that three minimum wage increases in the last year, the B.C. government’s failure to keep its promise to eliminate the small business corporate tax rate, and more than $3,000 in costs they will have to pay to transition to Provincial Sales Tax. These may represent the last dollars for some small-business owners. Further, there are costs to the taxpayer. Government will spend 28 million of your dollars on wage and benefit costs for Family Day. In tight fiscal times, with the ministries of education and health

GUEST SHOT and forests all in need of added dollars, is this the best use of a lot of your cash? Small business accounts for 98 per cent of all business in B.C., providing close to 60 per cent of all private sector jobs. Small business contributes 30 per cent of our Gross Domestic Product. They are the risk takers who put their personal and financial lives on the line to create jobs. For these small businesses, Family Day will carry a special irony: unable to afford overtime pay for their employees, and unwilling to close their doors and risk losing business to their larger competitors, the only way these families will spend the day together will be at work by themselves. Family Day is popular precisely because its benefits are obvious, while the negative repercussions are less tangible. If our province becomes less competitive, or prices rise marginally, or costs are passed to shareholders, we may not notice – at least at first. For small businesses, there is no buffer – the impact is real and immediate. They are our economy’s

canary in the coal mine, and we need to pay attention to them. Yet only Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson, joined by the Legislature’s two other Independent members, chose to stand up for small business. As yet, the BC Liberals, and the New Democrats who voted with them on this legislation, have failed to offer concrete action that will mitigate small business cost concerns. They’re not even talking about it publicly. As Simpson points out, if you asked people whether they wanted another holiday most would say yes. But as he says, there is an obligation to ensure British Columbians are fully informed about the implications of adding a statutory holiday - not just for businesses but also for households, for the taxpayer, for the economy. It’s not always easy to take a position that runs counter to the majority. It takes conviction to take up a battle no one else will fight. On behalf of smallbusiness owners in Cariboo North, including those represented by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), we commend his courage. Chaos reigns in wake of HST NTERTAINMENT

To the editor: At the same time the Department of National Defence (DND) has admitted the numbers of suicide incidents in the Canadian Forces have risen, how is it possible DND is eliminating the jobs of medical professionals involved in suicide prevention and monitoring of post-traumatic stress disorders? They are reducing the number of epidemiologists and researchers who analyze mental-health issues. This government has previously asserted that dealing with such health issues is a priority. How can it announce on the one hand that it appreciates the sacrifices made by our veterans and then turn around and cut the services and research efforts needed to treat those same men and women, at a time when they need it most? The Legion is extremely concerned with this move, especially with the increase of suicide incidents in the Canadian Forces. The full extent of the cases of mental illness, arising from the heavy

operational tempo in the Balkans and Afghanistan, has not likely been felt yet. The government and Canadians have sent these men and women to serve in these missions abroad and, therefore, have a moral obligation to ensure they are properly cared for once they return. The announced cuts give the government a failing grade. Without operational research in this area, Canada will be forced to resort to reactive treatment while abandoning the proactive education and prevention of mental illness to our troops. It is unacceptable that these cuts been made on the backs of our most vulnerable and mentally ill soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen. Environmental review streamlining good To the editor: I’d like to applaud the recent move to a “one project, one review” policy for environmental assessments. Having the federal and provincial governments carrying out environmental reviews that duplicate each other’s assessment processes is costly, senseless and unnecessary. Duplicate review processes have been known to take as long as a decade before approvals are granted. Not only is this a jobkiller, one that seriously stunts economic growth,

it also robs communities of the investment and prosperity they long to see. A “one project, one review” approach balances important environmental values with other values. It meets all environmental requirements, and it does not diminish environmental protections or safeguards in any way. Nothing is being lost by this overdue streamlining, but much is definitely being gained. Donald Leung Burnaby

VICTORIA – The old saying goes that if you like sausages and laws, you shouldn’t watch either one being made. The legislature’s sausage factory worked overtime to crank out a pile of legislative change before the B.C. Liberal government choked off debate and shut it down for the summer. This is after a dozen complicated bills were stuffed into the hopper in the final month. For the first time in British Columbia history, debate was carried on in three separate chambers to try to get through it all. It created a chaotic scene, with politicians and reporters dashing around trying to create the impression they were on top of it all. The NDP opposition screamed bloody murder about this travesty, especially as the clock ran down last week and bills were assigned a token 30 or 45 minutes to meet the B.C. Liberal government’s arbitrary deadline. Alas, what little time was allowed for the Opposition to question legislation was largely frittered away with the usual partisan sniping that substitutes for alternative ideas. The good news is that this mad rush wasn’t a calculated scheme to ram through unpopular, unfair measures. Quite the contrary. The B.C. Liberal government’s back is to the wall, trying to do what the public and circumstances demand and save its own skin. Here’s a partial list of the marching orders:

BC VIEWS • Get rid of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and bring back a computerized version of the old, inefficient Provincial Sales Tax. • Unclog the court system, which has become so constipated that a Stanley Cup riot fool can’t even plead guilty in a reasonable time. • Find a way to make our growing population of urban anarchists and assorted other deadbeats pay to ride transit. The HST exercise continues to exact its cost. The unprecedented job of creating a modern system for the archaic sales tax was the main cause of the legislative logjam, tying up government lawyers and delaying drafting of other bills. Small businesses that paid $3,000 to convert to HST get to pay another $3,000 to go back, and we had all better hope the new computer software works. Speaking of computers, one of the laws passed amid the shouting is

one that establishes an online system for disputing traffic tickets. Police will print out tickets from their cars instead of hand-writing them, and drivers will have an alternative way to argue about whether they really ran that red light. Fighting a ticket in court now takes seven to 18 months, tying up judges, court registry staff and police. An administrative system won’t keep them all out of court, but the government hopes to reduce the average resolution time to 90 days and save $8 million a year or more. A similar administrative system is being established for small civil claims and strata property disputes. Some legislation is to fix earlier screw-ups. A judge tossed out B.C.’s most heavy-handed administrative penalties for failing a roadside blood alcohol test, so the government brought in a new version that allows for another administrative appeal. The mistake of making transit operate on a poorly policed “honour system” goes back to Social Credit days. There is finally a system to enforce collection of fines, on those rare occasions when someone is ticketed for taking a free ride. Even with the last-minute rush, four bills couldn’t be rammed through. Since the legislature will almost certainly have to be recalled to impose a contract on teachers this fall, the government would do well to provide a couple of weeks for orderly debate at that time. McLeod reckless with our health To the editor: Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod is acting recklessly and putting her community members’ health at risk. She is supporting legislation that will reduce food safety oversight and make major cuts to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Canadians remember the devastating impact on many families from deaths caused by the Listeriosis outbreaks. We know more needs to be done to protect consumers, but in a callous and misguided move, the Conservatives are making the problem worse. They have decided to cut food inspectors and eliminate programs designed to proactively identify unsafe meat and other food products. Bowing to industry pressure, Conservatives are also eliminating enforcement of product labelling

in spite of widespread violations. Consumers will now be responsible for determining whether companies’ claims about nutritional information, such as levels of cholesterol, sodium and sugar, are true. For those with serious health conditions, such as peanut allergies or diabetes, false claims could prove deadly. Waiting for Canadians to get

sick is not a food safety strategy. Liberals are opposing these cuts because Canadians deserve to know that food they buy at the grocery store is safe and manufacturers’ health claims are true. Newsbeat Around the province Driver crashes into building KELOWNA - Workers at Sylvan Learning Centre got an unexpected surprise Saturday, June 2, when the driver of a Mazda 3 crashed into the front of the building. RCMP Const. Graeme Greig said an elderly woman was attempting to hit the brake pedal, but the car accelerated quickly forward instead. The Kelowna woman was dropping off her visiting granddaughter—who lives in Tokyo—for English lessons at Sylvan. No one was injured in the incident; however, the building and car sustained extensive damage. Greig said no charges have been laid by RCMP. “I’m going to leave it in the hands of ICBC,” said Greig.

Man allegedly kidnaps girlfriend WILLIAMS LAKE - A man faces possible kidnapping and assault charges after allegedly forcing his girlfriend into a vehicle with a weapon. At approximately 4:15 p.m. May 30, the Williams Lake RCMP received a call from a local business that a 28-year-old male was looking for his 20-year-old girlfriend and was uttering threats to harm her. Police say the man then left the area and located the victim at her residence and reportedly forced her into his vehicle at knife point. Williams Lake RCMP received information from the public of a possible sighting and police were able to locate the victim and apprehended the suspect without incident. The victim suffered non life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Williams Lake Hospital for medical treatment. The male, who is well known to police, remains in police custody and will be facing a number of charges, including kidnapping, forceable confinement, assault, assault with a weapon, and uttering threats.

Police take down theft suspect POLICE REPORT 100 Mile House RCMP responded to 74 complaints and calls for service during the past week. Theft suspect nabbed here On June 2, 100 Mile RCMP were dispatched to a series of complaints relating to a man

attempting to steal from vehicles from the Lakewood Inn parking lot in 100 Mile House. While police were attempting to locate the suspect, further calls were received about this same man being involved in thefts in the downtown area. A male matching the description provided by witnesses was located near Fourth Street in 100 Mile House.

On May 30 at 8:45 p.m., police were called to a structure fire in the 6400 block of Fawn Lake Road near Lone Butte. An unoccupied cabin was completely destroyed by the fire, which was hot enough to light the surrounding trees on fire. This fire is being treated as suspicious, as it appeared that someone attempted to extinguish the fire prior to the fire department being notified. If you have any information on this or any other crimes in the 100 Mile House area call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Your identity will remain unknown. A cabin on West Fawn Creek Road, which was destroyed by fire on May 30, kept fire crews busy when it spread into the bush. Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department (DLDVFD) Ladies Auxiliary’s (LA) May 19 Bake Sale opened at 9 a.m. and was its usual resounding success with all the delectable goodies gone by 9:45. The huge hamper went to Joyce McKay, while five-year-old Ava Wagner of Golden was very excited to win the equally large Kid’s Basket. At the same time, DLDVFD held an open house, so residents were able to inspect the department’s equipment. The event was over so fast LA members had plenty of time to visit Sulphurous Lake District Volunteer Firefighters’ Association (SLDVFA) Ways and Means Spring Sale that opened at 10 a.m. Both Deka and Sulphurous are most grateful to the public for their terrific support. Land renewal After applying in November 2010 to have its 10-year Crown land lease renewed, Mountain Spruce Community Centre Society (MSCCS) members learned in October 2011 that their lease has been renewed for a further 30 years, starting in September 2011. The society’s mission statement is to “promote the social, recreational and environmental health of the four lakes area,” including Deka, Hathaway, Higgins and Sulphurous lakes. Regarding the

The categories for the residential competition include best herb/vegetable garden, best xeriscape (reduces watering demand), best back yard overall, best curb appeal, tidiest block, and best overall. Relay for Life helps cancer patients By Patti Moore A cancer diagnosis can be a life-altering and very stressful experience. The good news is, whether it’s a ride to cancer treatments, or financial assistance for travel and accommodation related to cancer treatment, the Canadian Cancer Society is there for you. In the Southern Interior last year, the society provided $200,000 financial assistance to 311 clients and 220 volunteer drivers provided 7,950 client rides to and from treatments.

lodges in Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria and is building a new lodge in Prince George. Roy and Lynne Wall from 100 Mile House recently stayed at the lodge in Kelowna, while Roy was going through cancer treatment. Says Roy: “The lodge was superb. It was literally walking distance – just a few steps, to the clinic. To be able to go back to the lodge, where there’s comfort, after any procedure, was excellent.” Lynne adds she was able to stay with Roy at the lodge,

which relieved stress and financial burdens. Patricia Ferley, another 100 Mile House resident who stayed at the Kelowna Lodge, joked that while cancer is no vacation, she thoroughly enjoyed her stay and found the people, food, volunteers and nurses to be happy and helpful. “The affordability of everything helped a lot, too. As a pensioner, what would I do if I didn’t have a place to stay?” All 100 Mile House cancer survivors and caregivers are invit-

ed to the Survivors’ Victory Lap at the start of the 100 Mile House Relay for Life. View new goals and celebrate at CFEC The Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) Society is inviting its members and the public to its upcoming annual general meeting. He adds the weather co-operated, the students had fun, adults had fun and the schools Parents Advisory Council put on a great concession with hamburgers and hotdogs. schools show up, Carpenter says there were 65 students and it worked perfectly for six teams made up from all four schools. “We didn’t keep score. We just played for fun and exercise.” The principal notes the bottle drive was excellent as far as what they collected, but due to the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School Grad ceremonies and a birthday party, the student and parent turnout wasn’t as good as fundraising organizers had hoped for. “So a huge thankyou goes to those who did show up, as well as Barb Hagen our school TA [teacher assistant] for putting in a lot of hard work.” Carpenter adds the community support was amazing as usual

with people dropping off bottles, letting the volunteers take all of their empties and even donating cash in some cases. So a big thank-you goes to all the Lac La Hache community members who continually support our amazing school. The students recently planted their garden and the Grade 7 boys went to 100 Mile House for the Turn Masculinity Inside Out program. “As June is upon us, we get even busier than normal with our sports/fun day, track meet, Scout Island trip, and, of course, our field trip to Vancouver.” He adds a real special event they are having is the First Nations Cultural Day that Juanita Archie is organizing. Buy a coffee, send a child to camp Buying a cup of coffee at Tim Hortons on June 6 can help send local children to camp. Tim Hortons Camp Day donates 100 per cent of the funds raised to send two local children to one of its six camps in North America. Every penny from its coffee sales over a 24-hour period on Camp Day will be used for the program, which tallied $9.9 million countrywide last year. Assistant manager Sadie Lawrence says several events special to 100 Mile House will take place as additional fundraisers for the program. As long as the weather co-operates, a barbecue will be fired up under a tent in the parking lot selling hotdogs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., she explains. Tree seedlings will be available in green, refillable Tim Hortons mugs for $5, which Lawrence adds is a great deal. Special picnic

She encourages everyone to stop in during Camp Day at the 100 Mile House Tim Hortons on Highway 97 at First Street and buy a cup of coffee or leave a cash donation for the program.

The local Tim Hortons has participated in Camp Day every year since 2002. Local storeowners Steve and Barb MacPhail help select local youth based on criteria, and along with other Tim Hortons franchisees, send more than 14,000 children to camp. These include a 10-day summer camp, weekend residential camp with leadership programs, a sevenday winter camp and other programs.

Gymkhana series gets off to great start Arlene Jongbloets Free Press

The 100 Mile & District Outriders Club hosted their first gymkhana of a four-part series at the Outriders grounds in 100 Mile House on May 27. Co-ordinator Jen Szigety says 36 riders showed up, including some newcomers from 150 Mile House. “We had a blast!” She notes the weather was very warm and made for a terrific day. Szigety adds the series is off to a great start and that competition seems to

be high. “It was good to see people trying their hardest and going all out.” Szigety says she is still looking for a few additional sponsors and if anyone is interested in helping out, she can be reached at 250-706-9410. Squirts win bronze at Richmond ball tournament The 100 Mile ‘n Hour squirt division boys’ softball team from 100 Mile House brought back a bronze medal from the 15th annual May Mayhem Softball Tournament in Richmond, May 26. The Richmond Boys Softball Association hosted the event. The 11-member team, with batboy, Matt Wilden, won four out of six games at their first tournament of the season. Their first loss came in the second game and could have

set the tone for the rest of the tournament had it not been for some soul-searching initiated by coach Kyle Moore. “The kids got five runs in the first inning and then gave up. They learned a lot about emotions in this tournament. Now they realize a ball game is one inning at a time and they are able to make a comeback if they all hit the ball and play their game. “It worked for them for the rest of the tournament.”

Moore says their success came from team play, with pitcher Mitchell Hooper keeping things simple, just putting the ball in play and leaving the rest of the players to make plays. Lane Paddison also helped out on the mound, pitching 1.5 games and showing excellent form, Moore adds. “He did really well and has real potential to be a pitcher.” The team will be playing in as many tournaments as possible until going to provincials

in mid-summer in Surrey. Moore says he is optimistic as he took most of the same team members to mite division provincials three years ago and they won a bronze medal. “They’re all extremely excited. The more ball they see, the better they get.” He adds new uniforms this year were a welcome addition. “It boosts their confidence, looking like a real team.” New assistant coach Pat Findlay has been a real bonus to

the squad, Moore notes, sharing his lifetime of ball experience with them. On June 16, the team will be raising travel money by holding a bottle drive. Expect to see them going door-to-door and also setting up in the SaveOn-Foods parking lot to accept donations of returnable bottles and cans. Furthermore, people can make cash donations to a collection jar they have in place at Gold Trail Recycling.

Girls miss shot at provincials The 100 Mile House Storm U16 girls’ soccer team came up just short of qualifying for provincial championships on the weekend, leaving Quesnel with the top spot. The two squads met in 100 Mile for the showdown on June 3, having already eliminated Williams Lake from the running. Game 1 saw the Storm open the scoring in the first half with a rocket shot by mid-fielder Shian Remanente. Quesnel deadlocked the score before halftime, and then capitalized on a second-half penalty shot to take the victory. Quesnel took an early 2-0 lead in game 2, and then had it cut in half with a second-half goal by Storm striker Tiffany Keating.

James Seeley showed the importance of location, location, location, as even though he was approximately 40 feet further away from the pin than another player, he was on the green and, therefore, won the closest to the pin prize. The third flight also added some intrigue as five golfers - Allen Kregosky, Dave Jollymour, James Clancy, Steve Randall and Larry McKave - all shot 44s.

First flight Stevens had the low gross and Munro took the low net. Second flight French grabbed the lowgross, while Ohlund captured the low net. Third flight Kregosky won low gross and Jollymour walked away with the low net. Members can still sign up at the pro shop for the Match Play championship through to this Sunday (June 10). The Club Championship will be held Aug. 18-19.

Clinton May Ball Rodeo an excellent affair By Katie McCullough The Clinton May Ball Rodeo was a great success and sunshine definitely contributed to the large crowds, as the parking lot and grandstands were full on May 26-27. Many local competitors competed in the rodeo, and Clinton cowboy Kraig Loring tied for first place with Clay Waterhouse in the Junior Steer Riding and won $191.10. Clinton cowgirl Bacardi Zimmerlee took second place in the Junior Barrel Racing winning $222.41. A special presentation was made following the team roping on Sunday, as the winners were presented with a pair of custom stirrups in memory of Peter Bolster. Josh Cahill and Hallie Breen had the stirrups custom made in memory of their friend who was a team roper, saddle bronc rider and calf roper. In the very popular packhorse race, Clinton Ag Association president Rob Dube won the event both days, with Mike Draper coming in second. Cowboy hats,

Twins put Summer Games on schedule

It’s going to be a soccer summer for Mile 108 twin sisters Sydni and Olivia Poggenpohl. The girls recently had the opportunity to play with the U12 Girls European Football School (EFS) team from Vancouver at the Slurpee Cup in Kamloops. It came on invitation from head coach Saibo Talic who was familiar with the girls after conducting the EFS soccer camp in 100 Mile House and other communities in the Cariboo. During the Kamloops tournament, both Sydni and Olivia earned MVP awards through nominations from the opposing teams and Olivia scored the team’s lone goal of the tournament. The sisters also attended Zone 8 BC Summer Games tryouts in Quesnel recently and just got word that both made the team. They were among 12 of about 40 hopefuls to make the cut, and according to

Weather was on and off, but golfers were definitely on at the 108 Golf Resort Divorce Open. The June 2-3 event had a full slate of participants, with 88 couples registered. Supporting businesses were generous with prizes, says resort general manager Jeff Kendy. Big-ticket prizes, included patio furniture sets, barbecues, electronic tablets, golf clubs and more. First crack at the prize table went to Red Deer, Alta. couple Bob and Sue Mullen who were the lowgross overall winners. Kendy says they are familiar faces at the tournament and have won once before. Low-net overall winners were Shawn and Kathy Reid of 100 Mile House who were Divorce Open firsttime participants. Bob and Joanne Garrow of 103 Mile took the low-gross honours in the first flight, and Dave and Deb Evans from Horse Lake were second flight low-gross winners. He adds resort staff did a wonderful job of making the weekend a success and notes the participants were relatively well behaved. “For all of the years we’ve hosted this, it was pretty calm, with not as much arguing as usual. Some of the couples went home not too happy with each other, but they’re still married.”

Mettlesome ladies shine on 108 Resort Golf Course The 108 Ladies Golf Club challenge on May 30 was the “Iron-Ladies,” which has the golfers take the best score on four of the par-5 holes. Exeter Sporting Goods and the Red Rock Grill were tied with 4-1 records at the top of the 100 Mile Fastball League standings going into their showdown at Lumberman’s Park on May 31. Exeter scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, but then Red Rock Grill’s bats came to life, scoring

four in the top of the second. Then Red Rock got three more across the plate in the fourth inning when Brody Borg hit a bases-loaded double down the third-base line. Brent Szabo added an inside-the-park home run for Red Rock. Exeter chipped away at the lead with two in the fourth and scored three more in a seventh-inning rally. However, the rally

was snuffed when Cale Tessaro threw out an Exeter runner at home plate. The final score was 9-6 for Red Rock. Pat Findlay was the winning pitcher and recorded three strikeouts while going the distance. Paul Carey recorded six strikeouts in the losing cause. Bantams win again The Lac la Hache Food Market

Bantams picked up their second win of the season by knocking off Shuswap 9-6 on May 30. With the teams swapping pitchers and catchers, Stumpy Boyce chucked all six innings for the Bantams and recorded eight strikeouts for the victory, with Dave Archie catching. Kevin Neufeld threw three innings for Shuswap and got seven strikeouts,

Red Friday March seeks support Arlene Jongbloets Free Press

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 260 in 100 Mile House is preparing to host its fourth annual Support our Troops Red Friday March on June 8. Red Friday was created to support Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan and wounded soldiers, and give recognition to veterans. The march will assemble at 11:30 a.m. in the Safeway parking lot and get underway at noon. It’s scheduled to follow a route north along Birch Avenue and end at the cenotaph outside the 100

Heritage site staffers mix history with work Arlene Jongbloets Free Press

When Benjamin Howard McNeil built his rambling roadhouse at 105 Mile in 1905, little did he know that in the future it would become the focal point of the 108 Heritage Site. After 1912, the roadhouse ceased to serve travellers on the Cariboo Wagon Road and became the family home. Today, the old house operates as the 105 Mile Ranch Museum, serving travellers as a porthole to the past. This summer, Michal Albrecht, a student at Thompson Rivers University who grew up in the South Cariboo and graduated from Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) in 2010, greets visitors to the museum. She is pursuing a degree in psychology, but doesn’t mind mixing in a little history. Dressed in period clothing, she guides visitors through the museum house and explains the story of the building and the many artifacts that fill it. “Tourists are interested in everything about the site and local people seem to come here to revisit their childhood,” she says. tically told the staff he saw someone through the Post House window who appeared to be trapped inside, despite the building being locked. Another time, a staff member was mopping the floor, complaining to himself about “dirty ghosts” when his bucket went flying across the room. Chelsea Dunk is another summer employee, and she studies at the University of Northern British Columbia and is also a student of psychol-

ogy and political science. She is a 2011 PSO grad who is thrilled to be able to come home to work for the summer. Her job as inventory specialist is to ensure that every one of the several thousand artifacts on the site is clean, in proper order, and placed where it was intended to be. They are all listed in inventory records and Dunk must ensure each one is accounted for. Having visited Barkerville with her family just about every

summer while she was growing up, Dunk already has an ingrained love of pioneer history. She says some of the items on the 108 site date back to the early 1800s and that much of it is from local families. “New stuff is always trickling in. People clean out their grandmother’s house and ask if you can use it.” After hearing stories about the Post House, Dunk was nervous about having to clean up and do inventory work in

She was relieved to hear that she didn’t have to. “I don’t believe in ghosts, but I don’t want to run into anything either.” Connor Sortome, who graduated from PSO in 2011, is also on staff this summer. Whether using flies, gang trolls or spoons, it is great to see residents out on the lake supporting the sport fishing industry of British Columbia. As confirmed last month by fisheries biologist Steve Maricle, the size and health of Lac des Roches supports a large number of mixed species and rainbow trout fishing can be very rewarding. Several local experts have shared their knowledge on the technicalities and techniques of fishing the lake and have made this information available to the public on the Friends of Lac des Roches and Birch Lake website in several past newsletters. Some basic reminders are rainbow trout feed on the shoals; gulls feed on insect hatches and any noise in a boat will carry very far underwater and drive away even the hungriest of fish.

It has been seen and heard at all hours of the day and evening fairly regularly during the past few weeks. So far, no cubs have been spotted, so making enough noise to prevent startling it seems to be all it takes to keep the bear at bay. Residents are doing a great job of keeping each other informed of sightings and notifying seasonal users and visitors of the hazard. We should be able to share our neighbourhoods with a wild bear if we use caution and common sense, whether walking in the woods or storing garbage. Be bear aware at all times.

Messy long weekend Despite several family reunions, a celebration of life gathering and a garage sale, the area neighbourhoods were fairly quiet during the May long weekend. Most boaters were out for fishing and politely shared the lake with the growing number of paddlers and there were few off-road vehicles on the roads. The excess garbage strewn about the rest stop by animals was a terrible eyesore but was cleaned up by Thursday noon.

Cariboo artist takes a shine to glass Arlene Jongbloets Free Press

Glass artisan Gina Myhill-Jones has her first solo show at Showcase Gallery from May 28 to the end of June. “Through the Looking Glass” features some of her favourite pieces, including art panels, dishes, sun catchers, jewelry and stained glass work. The Gateway area artist creates her glass art in a home studio in her basement. She admits much of the space is absolutely packed with coloured glass and glass is something she is constantly on the lookout for. “I’ve got to buy what I like and I buy glass in colours that appeal to me.”

When creating a new piece, Myhill-Jones often relies on her kiln to turn raw sheet glass into something remarkable. With a design in mind, she cuts and stacks pieces of glass in the kiln and begins to build her vision. There can be as many as six firings involved, and with each one, more glass is added to build layers. She says there’s something mysterious and dangerous about working with heat and fire and that’s what attracts her. “It’s fun to play with fire and you get spectacular results.” She adds there is a tremendous amount of physics involved in planning the outcome of a firing. Even so, there’s always the possibility of

an unexpected result. “You never know when the colour will change or something will go wrong,” she says, adding it’s not always bad when things don’t go according to plan. Myhill-Jones moved from Maple Ridge to her Gateway hobby farm slightly more than two years ago, and since she has been living in the Cariboo, has found herself constantly inspired by the different hues and textures of the outdoors and ever-changing colours of the sky. Those images play a part in the thought process when she is both purchasing glass and creating a piece of art. She loves how light can be manipulated by glass and that’s one of the reasons she chooses

that medium over paint and canvas and the scores of other art forms she dabbles in. Myhill-Jones says glass art is one of newest and most rapidly expanding collector art forms and she makes sure to keep on top of recent trends and techniques. Just recently she took a course in Portland, Oregon where she learned about manipulating cast glass. It’s a technique she is really excited about and will be using in the future. The Watch Lake-North Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department ( W L N G LV F D ) Auxiliary’s Fourth Annual Dinner and Auction will be held June 16 at the 70 Mile House Community Hall. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with dinner at 5:30 and the auction at 7. Come and

support the fire department. Invite your friends for an evening of excellent food and a great time. The meal will be served by B.J.’s Catering and auctioneer Donna Nivison will keep the bidding going with fun and merriment. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Little Horse Lodge, the writer and other members of the auxiliary. The deadline for purchasing tickets is June 14. Running of the Balls Despite the cold and damp weather, 176 of 200 balls were sold for the May 20 Running of the Balls, hosted by the Watch Lake-Green Lake Community Association. A big thank-you goes to our ball sellers, the Watch Lake Lodge, Little Horse Lodge, Eleanor Bulman and on-site seller Janet Boyd. Thank you to all the volunteers and the rest of the onsite crew.

Special thanks to the following prize donators: Lynda Essau, tapestry; Watch Lake Lodge, horseback riding gift certificate; and Little Horse Lodge, T-shirt. Cash prizes went to: first, Helene Roberge; second, Radek Pelzer; and third, Maggie Dickey. The mystery prize for the Loser Ball went to Matt Ducharme. Thank you to our three special cash donors at the end of the day. Diane Hall won the horseshoe toss.

Dart league On May 10, the Watch Lake Dart League held its wind-up party at the Watch Lake Hall. Anna Marie Sward took first place and also had Lady’s Most Scores 85-plus with 32, had a 180 perfect score, was Top Lady and also won the Steve Dubrovay Memorial Trophy for Fellowship. Lou Stevens was second and also had Lady’s High Score of 140. See WATCH… page B12

The re-roofing of the main house at the 108 Heritage Site is proceeding well now that the weather is co-operating. Contractor Hector Dumont of H & F Enterprises says it took a little time to obtain the metal sheeting, as they were required to match the roofing on the church. At the time the accompanying photo was taken, the front of the house had been completed and they had installed the scaffolding and were working on the rear of the building.
