lectors. The Harrop Co-op was established sometime in the 1910s, according to a history by Anne Forrester in Kootenay Outlet Reflections. The association built a packing shed to handle fruit from around the outlet area of Kootenay Lake. Their biggest year was 1925-26, when 35 carloads of apples, pears, and other fruit were shipped. This was before the CPR line was completed past Procter, so boxes were loaded on the train at Harrop, then transferred to barge at Procter to continue down the lake to Kootenay Landing. In 1939, the packing shed began processing small fruits as well, including strawberries and cherries. This continued into the 1950s. The second floor of the shed was a social centre, and hosted Christmas concerts, church services, theatre productions, and dances. • A Hughes Brothers postcard of an “old timers parade” down Bay Avenue in Trail, showing the old Liberty Theatre, sold for
$51 US. The card was mailed in 1925 to Roy Shields of Victoria. The message read: “Dear Roy, Just a line to let you know I am fine and dandy and working all the time. Say hello to the Adams’ for me. Ed.” • A lovely real photo postcard of the SS Kaslo, postmarked 1905, sold for $31 US. It was mailed to a Miss E.E. Fraser of Boston. The Kaslo’s career on Kootenay Lake only lasted from 190010, although it was the fastest and most luxurious boat on the lake when launched. After it hit an underwater piling at Ainsworth, it was towed to Mirror Lake for repairs, but was instead broken up for parts. • A nice 1940s postcard of the SS Moyie moored at Kaslo sold for $16 US. The Moyie, now a museum and arguably West Kootenay’s most important silver rushera artifact, opens for the season this month. For a photo gallery of the above items, see nelsonstar.com

Exhibit gives children a glimpse into a fascinating marine world Vancouver Aquarium photo
“We take the van across different provinces in the country, explained operations leader Lydia Gibson. “We’re taking it through B.C., Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
“We travel across the country with animals you can find locally in the waters off the coast of B.C., she said. “We give children the opportunity to touch them, talk about them and
and hope they take care of it. Gibson noted that it’s about helping children make the connection with living creatures and being able to touch the animals helps with that
process. “In most cases some children don’t realize it’s alive, she added. Since the Vancouver Aquarium’s AquaVan began 18 years ago, it has given children across the country the opportunity to engage with marine life. Another part of the lesson is about conservation, stated Gibson. “We talk a lot about littering and dropping garbage, she said. “It’s something people encounter every single day, anywhere in the world. “So recycling, reusing things and reducing the amount of waste is important. Along with that, Gibson pointed out people can also participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up to save the Canadian shoreline from the build up of litter. This year, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup will take place on Sept. 15 to 23. To find the nearest location, go to shorelinecleanup.ca. The B.C. government has tabled its long-awaited legislation to kill the harmonized sales tax and return to the old provincial sales tax, with some modernization to make it easier for small businesses to administer and pay the tax.
Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said Monday the PST will return as scheduled in April 2013, with exemptions for haircuts, restaurant meals, bicycles, movie tickets, gym memberships and all the other rules it had before. Falcon said the only sales tax breaks that won’t return are temporary exemptions that would have expired by

That includes a 12-per-cent provincial tax on privately sold used cars, making the tax equal to that paid at a car dealership. Provincial tobacco taxes were increased seven per cent when

“I think they could have done it faster and they should have done it faster,” Ralston said. The government expects to save about $9 million a year in administration costs by using a new online registration and payment system for business, which B.C. expects to administer with about 100 fewer staff. Businesses will have to set up their computers to comply, with software expected to cost them about $1,000. Low-income families will give up a $230-per-person rebate that was introduced to offset the higher costs of HST to consumers, including children. As of April 2013, the PST rebate will resume, paying $75 per single adult with an income of $15,000 or less, and $75 per parent for families with an income of $18,000 or less. Falcon noted an independent panel found the end of the HST will mean $520 million less revenue the the B.C. treasury next year, $645 million less the following year and increasing lost revenue after that. “Clearly, any government in the future is going to have less revenue available to it, there’s no doubt about that,” Falcon said

Working together to prevent the spread of invasive plants SUBMITTED
Many people recognize that invasive plants are a concern in the Central Kootenay but the question is “where do we begin?” The Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC) is attempting to answer that question through a strategic planning process. Land managers
from non-profit societies, government agencies, utility companies, consulting firms and others met in Trail recently to discuss the issue of invasive plants and come up with a coordinated approach to management. “Since invasive plants know no boundaries, this collaborative approach to planning is so impor-
tant to prevent further spread of these species in the Central Kootenay” says Crystal Klym, Program Manager for CKIPC. “We were excited to have so many perspectives represented and working toward the same goals.” Funded by the Waneta Expansion Ltd. Partnership, Columbia Power Corporation, BC Hydro,

and, through a coordinated effort, may be eradicated. “We are excited to have an over-arching plan like this” says Andrea Vienneau, EMS Coordinator from Atco Wood Products Ltd. “Although each agency has its own mandate, we can be much more effective if we are all focusing on the same priorities”. Focusing on pre-
vention, early detection and rapid response of new invasive species has proven to be the most effective approach to invasive plant management. For more information on this process or to receive a copy of this plan, contact the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee at 250-352-1160 or see www.kootenayweeds.com.

The HEART behind the Mutt Strut the Mutt-Strut. The function, as mentioned, was for fun, but also to support the serious, compassionate work of an outfit called HEART – Husky Emergency Adoption Rescue Transport. Ida Koric of HEART says the mandate of the organization is to remove remote community dogs from neglectful and lifethreatening situations, to family homes in the Kootenays. Many folks have heard of efforts being made to save dogs in Mexico, and those efforts are applaudable. But dogs in northern Canada need help too. Koric points out that as well as the risk of freezing to death, poorly treated dogs in the north “either run feral in Native communities, or are kept as sled dogs, which means one musher will have 20 to 100 dogs on short chains tied to plywood shacks 24-hours-a-day, with no socialization or ex-
ercise.” Koric indicates that A fun event was some are held May 13 at Birchcritical of bank Park – a dog-apHEARTS CALL ROLF 250-442-7202 preciation day called efforts, giv1-250-447-2662 • 800-404-4244 en there is Ifh_d] If[Y_Wb also a need to save local 2007 FORD MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE dogs. automatic, only 44,800kms, loaded and ready to go She ascruising! serts, howwas $22,995 SALE $16,995 LHL52670 ever, that 2004 FORD F150 XLT LHL21321 2008 WRANGLER “One of the crew cab, 229,000kms UNLIMITED X LHL33736 2007 FORD EDGE SEL PLUS $8,995 motivations 6 Spd, 83,000 kms LHL75911 2004 GMC SIERRA 1500 4X4 $19,995 for the resWAS $21,995 SALE $19,995 LHL69114 2006 SMART FORTWO LHL88090 2007 FORD MUSTANG cue was the WAS $9,995 SALE $8,495 Most options, 47,000 kms LHL52670 fact that our $10,995 2003 MAZDA TRIBUTE LHL14757 WAS $22,995 SALE $16,995 WAS $7,495 SALE $5,995 2004 KIA RIO LHL96428 SPCA is one 2007 DODGE DAKOTA Auto, A/C, 131,300 kms 2003 BUICK RENDEZVOUS LHL32637 of the few in $5,995 LHL21442 WAS $16,995 SALE $15,495 B.C. which all wheel drive, 169,000kms 2010 TOYOTA TUNDRA LHL18295 2007 RAM LARAMIE MEGA CAB $7,495 WAS $39,995 SALE $36,995 is rarely at LHL592089 2001 OLDS ALERO GL LHL70363 2009 PONTIAC G6 WAS $25,995 SALE $24,495 c a p a c i t y. On April 14, 2012, 82 young scientists participated in the West Kootenay and Boundary Regional Science Fair. The 2012 event involved the largest number of senior students in recent years. Selkirk College Integrated Environmental Planning Technology Instructor, Rob Macrae did not expect to be involved but when he was contacted by local LV Rogers student and an eventual winner, Micah May, for assistance on his science project, Rob immediately agreed to help out. Macrae, who also exhibited at the fair, spoke proudly of his connection with the winner. “Micah contacted me in February about

a project to look at the quality of melted snow. He travelled all over the region collecting approximately 30 snow samples and a few creek water samples. He brought them to the college, thawed them and I demonstrated to Micah how to perform pH, conductivity and TDS/TSS tests on his samples. Micah did all of the work. He col-

Job numbers look ominous TIMOTHY SCHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser
The unemployment rate in the West Kootenay is rising and the number of people employed dropped in April, according to statistics from the province’s recent Labour Force Survey. The survey revealed the current unemployment rate in the West Kootenay was 7.2 per cent, the highest it has been in eight months. However, the figure was down from the 10.1 per cent the region was saddled with at this time one year ago. Overall, there were 1,600 fewer people employed in April (73,300) than in March, illustrating a steady drop in employment in the region since January when 76,100 held jobs. In 2011, April was the worst month of the year for unemployment at 10.1 per cent (70,400 employed), with Novem-
ber seeing the lowest rate at 6.4 (74,200 employed). On average, the West Kootenay had an 8.4 per cent unemployment rate for 2011. While the current youth unemployment rate of 10.5 per cent marks a low in light of the recent recessionary period and an overall improvement, it should be noted that this rate remains well above the pre-recessionary low of six per cent recorded in November 2005. It is also noteworthy that the youth unemployment rate is nearly twice that of those aged 25 years and over (5.5 per cent). Across the province, more British Columbians benefited from jobs in April, as the province’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.2 per cent from seven per cent in March, and gained 19,700 jobs — 16,700 of which were full time positions. The Labour Force
Survey also revealed that compared to this time last year, B.C.’s unemployment rate is 1.6 percentage points lower, resulting in the province having Canada’s fourth-lowest unemployment rate in Canada. Regionally, Vancouver Island and the Coast gained 4,600 positions, while the Lower MainlandSouthwest gained 15,000 positions and the Cariboo region gained 500 positions. Both North Coast/ Nechako (–3.6 per cent) and Thompson/ Okanagan (–2.5 per cent) recorded a slowdown in the number of jobs in April. Strong gains were recorded in forestry, fishing, mining and gas extraction; manufacturing; trade; and transportation and warehousing. Not all industries fared as well, as workforces were trimmed in the construction (–1.2 per cent) and utilities (–10.6 per cent) industries.

Grow a gardener – the time and effort are well worth it SUBMITTED
Do your kids think peas come from a bag in the freezer? Do
they know potatoes grow underground? Could they recognize a carrot growing if they saw the green
tops poking out of the soil? A lot of parents and grandparents are realizing many of today’s children are
growing up without an understanding of where their food really comes from. Perhaps you are a
seasoned gardener or someone who has just started thinking about getting your hands dirty. I don’t
have a lot of gardening experience myself, but I do try to grow a few things each year so my kids can ap-

preciate how food is grown. Whatever your gardening experience may be, spring has sprung and now is the perfect time to think about planting and growing with your children. Young children have a natural curiosity about the world around them and gardening is a perfect way to tie in valuable lessons like patience – as they wait for vegetables to grow, responsibility – as they take over watering duties and the value of healthy eating – as children are often more enthusiastic about trying vegetables they have grown themselves. Gardening doesn’t necessarily require a plot of land or hours of weeding. Gardening can happen in containers on a balcony or patio. In fact, many garden plants such as herbs, lettuce, radishes, and tomatoes do very well in containers. Raised beds can eliminate the need for weeding and are great for compact spaces. Try the square foot garden method and give your child a square of their own to care for. This popular method teaches gardening skills without being overwhelming. Watching a plant grow from a seed is like magic for young children, but slow germination rates can be trying for even the most patient child. Plant a mixture of seeds and potted plants to help keep their interest. Sunflowers and beans are fast growing plants from seed. My son started a sunflower from a seed at preschool last year and was absolutely amazed at how tall it grew; he was so proud to share the seeds with all of his little friends. Heart-felt radio fund-raiser a huge success SUBMITTED
Thanks to the generosity and commitment of thousands of our listeners, the 9th annual “Have A Heart” Radiothon has raised over $461,500 and still counting for the various hospital foundations in the BC Interior.
“We are overwhelmed and very proud of our communities’ outpouring of generosity.” Don Shafer, Astral Radio This exceptional total was raised during a 1-day campaign April 26th on the Sun FM network of stations, AM 1150, CJDC, The Bear and EZ Rock network of stations in the Okanagan, Kootenays, Salmon Arm, BC Peace and BC North regions. One hundred percent of the money raised will stay in our communities to purchase life saving equipment for our Paediatrics’ wards and to upgrade neonatal intensive care units. “Our “Have a Heart” Radiothon
shows the power of community from both our listeners and employees alike. The value of local radio to our cities is priceless during events like this”, says Mark Burley Group Brand Director BC Interior. Don Shafer, General Manager of the BC Interior Stations for Astral Radio adds, “We are overwhelmed and very proud of our communities’ outpouring of generosity and support for our “Have a Heart” Radiothon to benefit our local hospitals. We can’t wait to do it again next year! Astral Radio cares and together with our communities, we are making a difference.” During the “Have a Heart” Radiothon, on-air hosts encouraged our audience to contribute through various avenues such as on-line auctions, $12 a month making them a member of the “Have a Heart” Club and of course phone in pledges. Listeners were prompted to make a difference after hearing moving stories told by staff, families and hospital staff whose lives have been touched by experiences at their local hospital.

Three new directors join CBT Board SUBMITTED
Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) welcomes three members to its board this year and would like to also recognize the continued contribution of nine of its current members. The new directors, who are appointed for a two-year term, are: • Gord DeRosa from Trail. • Andru McCracken from Valemount; • David Raven from Revelstoke. “We are fortunate to have these new members who have strong ties to the region, are passionate about serving their region and communities and have valuable experience to offer CBT,” said Garry Merkel, CBT Board Chair. “We also need to thank and recognize the commendable contributions of departing members Bill Trewhella, Ron Oszust and Bob Smith.” With the addition of three other Directors appointed in January, Merkel said CBT’s Board is undergoing a positive rejuvenation, with fresh perspectives and ideas. David Raven had a 35-year forestry career in Revelstoke, is serving his first term as Mayor of Revelstoke and volunteers

on several boards and community organizations. “I am excited to join the Board and look forward to working with Columbia Basin Trust and all of the residents and communities across the Basin,” Raven said. “I was born here, grew up here and continue to

have my family and career here. Being part of an organization that is helping to strengthen my home is an honour and I intend to support its efforts to make the Basin a better place for all.” Andru McCracken has lived in Valemount for 11 years and is serving his first term as Mayor of Valemount. “Joining Columbia Basin Trust is daunting because it’s unique and its work is vital,” McCracken said. “This is a transformative organization. The Board and its work speak to possession of spirit and a love of the Basin and its people, and, more critically, a vision. My goal is to become as knowledgeable as Valemount’s past representatives. I hope to serve with the same integrity on behalf of the whole Basin.” Gord DeRosa is a long-time resident of Trail and has been a councillor for the City of Trail for over 25 years. “It is with a sense of pride I receive my appointment to CBT’s Board,” DeRosa said. “I recognize the virtuous contributions by those who have gone before me, and will diligently endeavour to complement and contribute to the Board. My immi-
grant father told me to dedicate myself to building my community; to do less would leave me unfulfilled at life’s end. Accordingly, I now serve my Columbia River Basin community.” Denise Birdstone, from Ktunaxa Nation Council, was also reappointed, with her term ending December 31, 2014. Existing members include Wendy Booth (Fairmont Hot Springs), Kim Deane (Rossland), Greg Deck (Radium Hot Springs), Cindy Gallinger (Elkford), Garry Merkel (Kimberley), Am Naqvi (Nelson), Laurie Page (Nakusp) and Paul Peterson (Burton). CBT’s 12-member Board consists of qualified individuals appointed by the provincial government: six from among the nominees of the five regional districts and the Ktunaxa Nation Council and six others. All directors must be residents of the Basin. The Board meets six times a year in communities around the Basin. The public is invited to attend in order to meet CBT’s Board and ask questions about CBT’s work in the Basin. The next meeting is: May 25, 4 p.m. at the Columbia Basin Trust building in Castlegar.

RTCC golfer finds form SUBMITTED
Diggin’ the derby action Valley Vendetta players Axxe 4 Mercy, HellKat Von D, Peacemaker, and Berly McPain work together to get jammer Shannon Go-Hurty through the pack on Saturday night in roller derby action in Castlegar. The evening saw the Bad News Betties of Nelson defeat the Vendettas, who hail from Slocan, 196-158. In the opening game of the double header, Salmo’s Babes of Brutality upended Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers 209-69. Craig Lindsay photo
A small field participated this past weekend in Nakusp, but that did not take away from the drama of the finish. Winning his first ever overall title on the Junior Circuit was Ryan Fullerton from the Rossland Trail Country Club. Ryan played solid golf all day and sealed the victory sticking his approach on 18 to five feet and then making the birdie putt. Ryan has played the circuit for three years and he was well deserving of the win. Taking first in the 17 and 18 division was Brenan Moroney, in the 15 and 16 year division Brett Mengler from Nakusp took first and Amber Arnold from Castlegar finished second.
The 14 and under division went to a playoff with Braden McKay from RTCC beating Carson Arcuri from Granite Point on the second playoff hole. On the first playoff hole Carson made a fantastic par save from the bunker, but on the second hole of the playoff his approach ran through the green and he was not able to get up and down. In the Net division the McInnes brothers from Nakusp took honours. Nathyn McInnes took the 15 - 18 year old division with a net 67 and Dugan the 14 and under with a net 63. In the skill prizes Brenan Moroney and Braden McKay both dominated. Both kids won the KP and LD in their age divisions.

Toyota has been producing durable four-wheel drive vehicles for more than six decades, long before anyone called them SUVs. Today, virtually all manufacturers produce a compact SUV or crossover with some rather lofty claims. Have you ever looked underneath one of these Johnny-come-latelies and do they live up to the hype? Ask yourself if any have used the punishing and infernal Australian Outback as their testing ground, or whether they’ve endured years of cold-weather testing in Timmins, Ontario, where we’ve had a research facility for 15 years. Don’t know where Timmins is? Don’t worry, neither do our competitors.

Horoscope
Michael O’Connor
ffor th the
Week
May M a 18, 2012
Tip of the Week: There is a lot happening from the standpoint of Astrology. The Solar eclipse New Moon on May 20th is a principle close-up feature. In Mayan Cosmology, this event is very significant as it only occurs once every 360 years! Eclipse cycle rhythms are more complex than they seem. Put simply, each eclipse is part of a larger family called a Saros Cycle yet each one is also unique, like a family member. From the standpoint of Astrology therefore, each must be analyzed separately to gain a deeper appreciation of its unique significance. That these events reveal synchronistic events in outer reality is a basic feature of how Astrology works. How celestial ‘influences’ affect each ‘person’ is relative. A person can be an individual, a country, state, province, and city, company and any other official organization or place. So, while a generic analysis can produce useful insights, the more precise insights come from measuring the event against the actual chart of the ‘person’ in question. Again, this can refer to a larger ‘individual entity’, so many can feel the influence at the same time. The weather works this way as well, as we each interpret it according to our own needs, desires and so on. This is where a closer analysis of one’s own Astrology comes to the fore. Yet, to truly ‘see’ into a ‘person’ the ‘whole chart’ must be considered. Taking any factor in isolation will simply not produce the accuracy that authentic Astrology provides. I will bring more emphasis to this special New Moon Solar Eclipse in my Newsletter. To receive it send me an email, it is free.
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
Establishing more steady rhythms has been a main focus. Not the current is going to wind and turn more. This will push you to deepen your resolve to stay the course. Extra efforts will be required not to get distracted or to reactively abandon your focus. This is a time of returns though the result is likely to be mixed. Clarify objectives to stay on course. This is an expansive and go-ahead time for you. You may feel more sporting these days and eager to play with new possibilities. Yet as ever there are curve balls to contend with. People and circumstances are demanding a lot of you. Your willingness to keep an open mind and to maintain a receptive attitude to learn remains important.
A lot of activity going on behind the scenes is producing mixed results without. This hidden zone stands to be your own subconscious mind or other internal processes. The key now is to direct your attention to these. Allow time to rest and retreat now. Yet, you will want to take on some key initiatives. Consider completing things before starting new projects.
A lot of activity in the friend department continues to keep you busy. This has likely been an exciting and rewarding time. Yet, you will want to slow the pace. Tending to a variety of small projects, events and engagements will prove more satisfying than bigger one generally. Yet your energy levels remain high so you can still be productive.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
Opportunity continues to knock in your career and/or public and social life spheres. Meeting new people and making friends is part of the plot. Your ambitions are likely running high, yet your energy levels may not be. Balancing these two extremes may simply require that you get more rest. Do reach out to meet new people yet avoid frivolous activities.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
Your world is poised to expand somehow. Your public and professional life will be influenced. Refining your skills ad sharpening your tools is probably a good idea now. Make efforts to smooth any creases in your public relations. Like cleaning and attending to final details before a big party, this stands to be your best focus this week.

Dealing with financial interests and concerns continues. These are leading you to pay closer attention to the details. Investigation ad research is likely. As much as you would like to enjoy cultural activities, the opening or inspiration has not been there. This will change this week however. Be alert to opportunities to play more.
As though crossing a turbulent river and in mid stream, you may feel uncertain about many things. Who are you now and where are you headed. These are valid thoughts in the crossing and this cycle will continue all summer. Trust this process and work inwardly to be creative and confident. Do plan and prepare but be patient to touch upon solid ground.
Tremors and perhaps some genuine quakes have been shaking your foundation for some time now. This has probably been testing your faith. Your social scene does stand to open up over the coming weeks, however. This is a call to reach out more. Yet, do proceed with sincerity and diligence. First impressions go a long way and you will want to make good ones.
A creative wave continues to push you along. Now it is time to pay more attention to the finer details. Refinement of what has been initiated is the call now. This trend will continue for some time so intend to be patient and deliberate. The coming weeks and months will require that you follow through with disciplined focus for the sake of long term success.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
Your confidences have been steadily growing. You may feel more abundant than ever. Whether this is literal or figurative, you should feel more stable to advance. Some exciting momentums are brewing and should become more evident this week. Yet it remains important that you do some inner work, getting to the bottom of things, spring cleaning perhaps.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
Steadily building upon new perspectives and strategies of approach has been an ongoing theme. Now it is time to direct your focus to your home base. Robusters work out at Christina Lake. Submitted photo
Forks, Christina Lake, Castlegar, Trail and Rossland, the Robusters are a committed bunch to say the least. Carpooling to Christina Lake three times a week, the group practices under the supervision of coach Trish Ostlund. The team includes breast cancer survivors and associate members and is always looking for new paddlers to join the team. More information is available on the website www.kootenayrobusters.com. The team mandate includes physical fitness, mental and emotional sup-
port of teammates and a commitment to raising awareness of breast cancer. To ensure that the latter focus is covered, the Robusters take part in events like the recent Silver City Days parade in Trail, Relay for Life initiatives and other community events designed to support cancer research. As well, each year the team publishes a calendar of scenes captured by local photographers with pages sponsored by community businesses. The funds raised allow the team to make yearly donations to the oncology department of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital and also keep fees within the reach of any woman who would like to join the team. Paddling goals this year include a festival in Lethbridge in early July and an exciting trip to a dragon boat festival in San Francisco - the first time the Robusters have attended an international event. The team would like to thank its many supporters for the encouragement shown in our communities. Paddles up!
Grow a gardener Continued from P. 10
...consider renting a plot at a community garden. Involving your kids in a community garden exposes them to an amazing variety of vegetables grown by many different gardeners. Kids and parents involved with community gardens also benefit from the wisdom of other gardeners. Connect with your local food action committee, community or health centre to find out if there is a community garden near you. If you have a child in school, ask if there
is interest in starting a school garden. Planning for a school garden can start now and carry over into the fall so that the school garden will be ready to plant next spring. For information on school gardens see http://healthyeatingatschool.ca/. These websites can help you and your kids start gardening: http://urbanext.illinois.edu/firstgarden/ and http://www.kidsgardening.org/ Author: Linda Boyd is a Community Nutritionist with Interior Health

Health/Community Young team of cancer fighters believes ‘You Only Live Once’ SUBMITTED
We are a group of high school students and our friends and family, and our team name is YOLO. It stands for You Only Live Once. As a team we are strong believers in living our lives to the fullest, and cancer is taking this opportunity away from our friends and family. This is why we chose YOLO. At first
it was overwhelming to see how many people were willing to donate to our Relay team. Because it was our first time with Relay, Mandy put our fundraising goal as $300. We quickly realized that we would be raising much more. We signed up for Relay just a couple of weeks ago and already we have raised over $1,500! We got the
word out through Facebook and e-mails to our family and friends, asking for donations as well as asking them to join our team. I also invited Relay For Life representatives to make a presentation to our school in Salmo, which helped us recruit teammates. When you do a fundraiser you see how many people really care about a good cause, and I think
one of the reasons we raised so much in so little time is due to living in such a small community and having so many strong connections. Everyone is always willing to help each other. I can’t wait to see how much we end up raising! Our fundraising ideas for the next couple weeks include asking different community groups for donations, and our
friends are shaving their heads- they are donating $100 per head shaved, which is amazing. Five of them have shaved their heads so far and in total they have raised $700! We also had a bake sale. We are really looking forward to Relay day! All of us are especially looking forward to the luminary ceremony because I have put my mom and a friend’s
mom’s names in there, and Mandy will be putting her grandpa’s name on a luminary too. Mandy says she feels blessed to have the opportunity to be involved in such a day, and we are all so happy to be a part of this as participants and volunteers to help fight back against cancer. Kirsten Faris, Mandy Huser and Lynsey
Gray. The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is coming to a town near you. May 26 at Haley Park in Trail, June 2 at James Donaldson Park in Grand Forks, June 9 at Pass Creek Exhibition Grounds in Castlegar, June 16 at Lakeside Park in Nelson For more information call Stacey 250364-0403.
