Castlegar City Council briefs CRAIG LINDSAY
The City of Castlegar has 50 (ďŹ fty) rain barrels available and is offering them to City of Castlegar residents on a ďŹ rst-come basis for $50.00, which includes the downspout diverter. Rain Barrels are an easy and very effective way to conserve water in the yard by capturing rain water for later use. The barrels hold 55 gallons and come with a tap and overow line.

Bear Aware At the Castlegar City Council meeting of June 4, Fire Chief Gerry Rempel introduced Jenny Wallace as the city’s new Bear Aware Community Co-ordinator. Wallace gave a short presentation about the Bear Aware program and what her duties will be. “Bear Aware’s mission is to reduce human/bear conflict through education, innovation, and cooperation, she said. “The idea behind this is the best solution to bear/ human conflict is prevention which can be attained through education. I want to get out in the community and educate people about solutions for dealing with attractants such as garbage, poorly managed composts, bird feeders, smelly barbecues, the whole deal. If we pro-actively address the problem of attractants in our community, we will decrease the number of bears destroyed, increase public safety, and as an added bonus, will increase the cleanliness of our city. Wallace has moved to Castlegar after living in Ontario for many years. She graduated from Selkirk College’s Fish and Wildlife program. She also has a degree in psychology with a focus on animal behaviour from the University of Guelph.

Castlegar Fire Chief Gerry Rempel introduces new Bear Aware Community Coordinator, Jenny Wallace to city council at the meeting of Craig Lindsay photo June 4.
Wallace will get the Bear Aware message out by canvassing door to door and appearing at public events such as Sunfest. She will also go out at night to check to see if people have left their garbage out. “I will leave them an embarrassingly bright, yellow ticket, she warned. “I will record those houses and go back for education. Invasive plants At Monday’s meeting Crystal Klym, executive director -Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee, gave a presentation on invasive plants in the area. She showed councillors a sample of a knot weed plant and also handed out tool kits for invasive plant management. Radon gas There was a recommendation brought forward to council from the Planning and Development committee to wait until the provincial gov-
ernment comes out with their new building bylaws before putting in stronger standards for radon gas reduction for new builds. Phil Markin, director of development services, reminded council that any standards that could be dealt with by the provincial building regulations cannot be adopted without ministerial approval. “I wanted to know why we couldn’t put our own in - something that suits us because we have such a high concentration of (radon), said councillor Deb McIntosh. “We shouldn’t wait for the province, we should let them adopt our standard. I know putting these safeguards in place prevents radon from coming into the house. Radon is a cancer causing agent - so why wouldn’t we do that? It’s also much cheaper, she said, “If you put it in at the beginning it’s way less expensive than it is after the fact.
A motion to make improvements on the Cobra Climb stairs (by 10th Avenue) and install lights was voted down by council. The cost of installing lights would have been $12,000. However, a letter of concern from a resident referred to potential problems that could have been created by the installation of lights. A subsequent public meeting was held and further concerns, regarding the condition of the roof over the stairs, were submitted. Cost of improvements to the roof and the parking area are estimated to be $6,000. “The original motion was to put lights on the Cobra Climb and fix up the parking area, said McIntosh, who voted for the lights. “The lights on the Cobra Climb were defeated, so we go back to committee (Transportation and Civic Works) to see what we can do about the other part of it. You know what? - it’s democracy. And democracy means not always getting what you want. I’m happy to work with the committee on developing another plan and bringing it forward. Back to the drawing board.

Let’s take water seriously With low clouds and heavy, steady rain rinsing the area lately, the critical concern over water in so many parts of the world may seem worlds away. But we who ignore the increasingly frequent calls for water conservation will do so at our peril. Here in the Castlegar area where two good size rivers meet we’re blessed (as are so many other Canadians) with what appears to be a limitless supply of clean water. But the bottomless well may not necessarily endure. Our own growing population is taking care of a certain amount of the supply, not to mention growing demand for export. Then there’s the huge, thirsty world superpower to our south where plans have long been on the books for a water storage and diversion effort to dwarf every existing hydro-electric project completed so far. That’s a big one, and it’s just one of the compelling reasons to try and stay up to speed with international agreements such as the Columbia River Treaty. Also close to home are the issues concerning potential groundwater contamination – addressed in recent stories and letters in this paper. What it amounts to a coming shift from a preoccupation with oil and gas, to something our immediate survival continues to depend on. It just makes sense to treat it with reWe want to hear from you.

Spots in Time - Gord Turner
Travelling for new experience Not everyone goes on a holiday to experience something different. Some travel simply to travel—to say they have passed through a particular landscape. Others travel to the same spot each year to lie on the same beach or play the same golf course. My aim is always to find a refreshingly new experience. I’m not talking about simply a new country. I’m speaking about an event that may be off the beaten track or unusual in some way. When we were in Thailand recently, we visited an elephant camp—home to about 40 elephants and their trainersmasters. This was in northern Thailand in the low mountains outside Changmai not far from the Golden Triangle. We arrived at the camp about midmorning. Quickly, we hiked over a fast-flowing stream and found some of the elephants in a tight corral. Their trainers were perched on their heads or tucked behind their flapping ears. One of our friends bought bananas and sugarcane to feed to the elephants. Then he was urged to have his picture taken with the elephant’s trunk wrapped around him. After the photo session, he had to dig into his wallet to get a 20 baht bill to pay the elephant. It took the money in its trunk. flipped its trunk upward, and the trainer took the offering. Craig Lindsay Reporter
Jim Sinclair Editor
After that the elephants were paraded down to the stream where they immediately defecated into the flowing waters. Great green balls of dung floated down the stream where several older ladies caught them in nets and dumped them into baskets. The story is that this elephant “output” is used in making a high-quality paper product. We watched the elephants then lie down and bathe themselves in the cooling waters as the day was hot at 39 degrees Celcius. We strolled up to the arena to get good seats for the elephant “show,” which turned out to be outstanding. Elephants must be incredibly intelligent or easily trainable because they performed tricks that astonished us. They bowed to us, they berated us, they twirled their trunks, they hauled logs, they stacked logs, they kicked large soccer balls at a net, they threw darts at balloons, and they painted magnificent pictures. We were impressed most by the elephants’ abilities at painting pictures. After a lull, five elephants trotted into the arena carrying boxes of paints with brushes. Canvases had already been set up on easels. The trainers prepared the paints and handed the wet brushes to the elephants. Clasping the brush in its trunk, each elephant made strokes Chris Hopkyns Publisher

upon the paper. My thought was that this was going to be an exercise in abstract art. However, the elephants actually painted outdoor and still-life scenes. The elephant-artist we focused upon painted a landscape with a sunset and green grass background with palm trees in the foreground. Immediately afterward, someone paid 7,000 baht (about $200) for this painting. After the show we wandered over to the platforms where our elephants were waiting to take us on our ride into the jungle and over a small mountain into the next valley. Our elephant was 48 years-old and a bit cranky. But I couldn’t blame him because it was extremely hot in the sunshine and the trail was quite steep. Our elephants lumbered upward, urged on by their trainer-masters sitting on the top of their heads. Clamped into a heavy wooden seat, we rode precariously on top of the elephant’s middle. It was like being strapped in for a midway ride, except this was real, leathery elephant. After a long ride where we rolled left and then right as the beast moved forward, we found ourselves in the village of the long-necked people. But that’s another adventure. Sandy Leonard Production

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
What about the weeds? If you build it they will come... the weeds and trees, that is. It seems to me the plan in Castlegar is to develop gardens, plantings and in some cases parks and they will, for long periods of time, look after themselves. True the city does hire students in the summer to mow and weed but are there enough to look after the amount that there is to maintain? Perhaps they should hire more. Is there enough full time staff to look after these areas at other times? Is it okay to mow the boulevards only for special events such as Sunfest. Take a look at the planted areas along Columbia, Third and Fourth as well as the parking lot across from the Columbia Basin Trust building. The weeds are taking control. It seems time only allows for the weeds to be covered by bark mulch annually. If you take a look, they seem to thrive in this. The city, each spring, distributes beautiful hanging baskets, which are well maintained and the SculptureWalk group adds the interesting and wonderful sculptures that are well set off by the weed-filled gardens.
A plan is in the works to add more development to Millenium Park. The exercise area, outdoor theatre, bike circuit and run of the river ponds will be attractive to many Castlegar citizens and visitors. Surely it will allow for much greater use of a park that already is an attractive area for many daily visitors. Of concern to me is whether these areas will be left to maintain themselves as some of the resting spots are now, where weeds control the planted areas and trees lift and crack the cemented areas. Can we expect some of those who willfully damage these areas will respect them when we don’t seem to care? Perhaps some of the residential and business owners could look out front and give a helping hand. Perhaps it’s time to hire more city staff. Will the new developments in Millenium be maintained? After spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, I certainly hope so. What do you think? Let the city council and city staff know. -Kathy Gregory, Castlegar
Sculpture Walk The Board of Directors of the Castle-
gar SculptureWalk program extend our sincere appreciation for the response to our third year of exhibition of sculptures on the streets of Castlegar. It is with the goal of making Castlegar and region home to outdoor art and with the hope of engaging other artistic endeavours that we journey forward to our goal of 55 sculptures in our city. We are almost there, with 40 sculptures on site through the exhibition downtown and the newly-added leasing program. To those who have leased, supported pedestals, or purchased works of art, we sincerely applaud your vision of excellence and commitment to our community. The latest 30 sculptures were installed on May 25, and 26, with the artists in attendance and the expertise of local welders, millwrights, boom operators and our board working as a united effort to bring this global arts display to our streets. Feel the energy. With the recognition you are witnessing some of the greatest works by international sculptors from New York State, Toronto, New Brunswick and, not to be taken lightly, our local artists who are working around the globe with their expertise.
We are extremely blessed to have the support of many volunteers in our community to make this program come together. Political entities, cultural supporters, trade support, artistic support, and those who sincerely appreciate the different art expressions are each making a contribution. This endeavour once again proves that Castlegar is a force on the cultural scene. Let’s continue to work together, and grow our city for future generations. -The Board of Directors of Castlegar SculptureWalk, Darlene Kalawsky, Chair

Summer can present special problems for Castlegar’s water system. During the summer season, daily residential water use can increase by as much as 200% primarily because of lawn and garden watering as well as car washing. Our residential water is pumped from the Arrow Lakes to reservoirs, from which water is supplied to residents. Excessive sprinkling during summer months reduces the water contained in our reservoirs. Even if the system has adequate supply, it may not be able to pump the water fast enough during this peak demand period to maintain storage for firefighting purposes. Castlegar is attempting to stop the increase in water usage by restricting use during the summer months. This year citizens are being asked to sprinkle on odd or even days, according to their residential address. Watering will be permitted from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m each day. Residents who use a water regulating system (e.g. timers and underground sprinkler system with timers) shall be exempted from the regulations, providing they do their outdoor watering between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. on an alternating day basis. The reasoning behind this exemption is that timers and underground sprinkling systems allow the user to water during the coolest part of the day, hence less water is required and their sprinkling times should be shorter. Please advise City Hall at 365-7227 if you have a water regulating system. A fine of $50.00 will be levied for non-compliance to the water regulations. However, under special circumstances, an exemption permit can be obtained at City Hall, 460 Columbia Avenue during regular office hours. Reasons for exemption include the following: a new residential lawn, a means of controlling dust, watering within a construction or building project.

...of campus life, walking the halls and envisioning themselves there in the future. The day consisted of structured mini-classes where the instructors prepared short and engaging sessions: English Lit, Chemistry, Spanish, and Earth Sciences. This was an experience my son said was the “best field trip ever.” It’s so important to instill a love of life long learning in our kids, and Selkirk did an excellent job of giving them a real-life, hands-on learning experience. A special thanks also to my children’s school, Brent Kennedy Elementary, for participating, and to both Elizabeth Lund and Lori Barkley of Selkirk for their enthusiasm, energy, and organization. A real gift to our children and community. -Carla Marshall, Slocan Park

People concerned about the safety of using pulp sludge have a valid reason for not using it in their area. The pulp sludge is an industry problem in B.C., and it should not be. The sludge can be easily de-watered and put back into the pulp process as a close loop system. The truckers at the pulp mill would be throwing up from breathing the toxins in the gas from the sludge at a temporary storage by the sawmill. The up-river wind made

the sawmill workers sick, that pile was then quickly moved to a distant location. The P.P.W.C. workers’ union environmental officer had the sludge from different mills independently tested and then submitted the results to the government. The results were bad, and to my knowledge the government did not issue authorization to spread this harmful residue in the wide spread communities nor should it, even if vegetation grows well in the sludge. To protect your safety: 1. Ask for a letter from the pulp mill for the contents of the sludge. 2. Ask the city council or regional districts if they authorized dispersal of the sludge without tests. 3. Independent testing can be made by Selkirk College students to verify safety or not. Widespread dispersal in the communities of any untested substance is unacceptable. -Mel McMullen, Castlegar

Peaceful message At its recent biennial conference in Castlegar at the Mir Centre for Peace, the B.C. Southern Interior Peace Coalition reviewed a range of threats to the peace and security of our world. Delegates unanimously endorsed: • Bill C-363 (for conscientious objec-
tors, to redirect/redivert that portion of their taxes going to the Department of National Defence to peaceful purposes) • Bill C-373 (calling for the establishment of a federal Department of Peace), the Occupy Nelson Movement and the stand of university students in Quebec against proposed increases in their tuition. • Bill C-363 and Bill C-373 are both Private Members Bills put forward by Alex Atamanenko, Member of Parliament for the Southern Interior, and have received first reading in the House of Commons. The B.C. Coalition is an association of diverse member groups in the Boundary, Kootenay and Okanagan regions. Guiding principles are based in equality, non-violence, social and economic justice, protection of the environment, and respectful communication to achieve peaceful solutions rather than resorting to violence. It is an avenue for sharing experiences, learning from those experiences and supporting each other’s work for a world free of violence and lived honouring, valuing and supporting all humanity and Mother Earth. Member groups also belong to the Canadian Peace Alliance. The B.C. Southern Interior Peace Coalition meets twice a year, usually in the spring and fall. More than 18 million litres of used oil is not recovered by the BC Used Oil program each year. These oils are extremely hazardous to our environment and drinking water; instead of sitting in our landfills, used oil can be recycled into a variety of useful products. This year, the British Columbia Used Oil Management
Association (BCUOMA) is pleased to announce the launch of the seventh annual Summer Ambassador Program. The tour will see the two ambassadors travel to over 120 municipalities and over 500 recycling facilities throughout B.C., spreading the message, “one drop makes a difference.” Attending community events, speaking to government officials as well as the public,

Grads get top marks from cops SUBMITTED
The Castlegar RCMP would like to take this opportunity to commend 2012 graduates for making last weekend a safe and memorable event. Police did not respond to any serious matters relating to grad itself. Although they were kept busy during the evening
of Sunday, May 27 monitoring traffic coming and going from a graduation bush party at Haul Road in Robson, the event was without incident. Parents and family members did their part in ensuring their children were transported to and from the party safely. Parents commented on how pleased and thankful they were to
see police presence at Haul Road. This roadblock contributed to maintaining safe roads in our community as well as assisted in keeping our graduates safe. Debbie Postnikoff, Corporal Supervisor/Media Relations Officer RCMP Castlegar Detachment

A motion to allow residents to opt out of FortisBC’s upcoming Advanced Metering (Smart Meter) Infrastructure program was tabled by a vote of 4-2. “Some councillors wanted more information,” said Deb McIntosh, who brought forward the proposal. “I don’t know what more information there is out there. I just feel that if utilities are going to bring something in and people are scared for their health then why not allow people to have that opt-out policy? But it’s been tabled, so we’ll have to go back to the drawing board and see where we go from there.” Before installing meters, FortisBC must receive approval from the B.C. Utilities Commission, which they have not done yet.

Dementia isn’t always a disease of the aged. Evidently, brain function starts to decline at the age of 45. Many risk factors that may contribute to dementia later in life can occur in middle age. These include high cholesterol, obesity and high blood pressure. So taking care of your body and your brain in your middle years may stave off dementia in the later years. Early diagnosis is important in many diseases, and doctors are hoping for success in studies being carried out to find a “biomarker” in the blood that would indicate dementia may be brewing. One biomarker has already been found that predicts low oxygen in the brain. This is an early indicator of dementia. More work is to be done but the future is looking brighter for early diagnoses of dementias. Local Air Cadet program worthy of a close look JIM SINCLAIR Castlegar News Editor
Some young people find out early what they want to do with their lives. If they do, there’s no probably no better decision to make than to follow their dreams. In the exciting, stable and rewarding field of aviation, kids as young as 12 can get themselves on track toward a solid career. The Air Cadets program is a proven process that channels an existing interest and nurtures it. Castlegar’s 581 Squadron is putting out the invitation for local youth from 12 to 15. Once involved, a cadet can remain in the program until the age
of 19, not only is this good for them, but also for the younger members they can act as role models for. Keep this fact in mind – if the fascinating world of aircraft is something you’re already interested in, you’ve got a great head start on your road to success. Now here’s some more incentive: the monetary cost is negligible. The military component of the training experience, according to local Commanding Officer Terry Klapper, is available at zero cost to a family. Related civilian fees amount to somewhere in the neighbourhood of $100 per year. The squadron is
currently gearing up for an annual event known as the ceremonial review. This year will be memorable in that Terry Klapper will be turning over the commanding officer portfolio to a worthy successor. For a kid who’s keen on a future in aviation, the cadet program represents a direct route to a pilot’s license (power or glider) plus a multitude of other benefits in terms of team-building pursuits including a band program. Time could hardly be spent in a more constructive, positive environment. This is definitely something worth considering. For more details call 250-365-8100.

Aquanauts crush meet records in Nelson CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter
The Castlegar Aquanauts swim club attended its first meet of the season this past weekend in Nelson. The club had 37 swimmers compete, of which 36 recorded personal best times. "It's always a very exciting meet as we haven't had a competition since last August and we're five weeks into the season," said Aquanauts head coach Mitchell Bourne. "Many of the swimmers have moved up an age group (division) from
last season and have different competition to swim against." Bryce Anderson set a new meet record in the 50 metre breaststroke with a time of 48.9 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than the previous record. The division one boys set a new meet record as well on their way to gold in the 4X50M freestyle relay. The team, consisting of Carson Ogloff, Bryce Anderson, Ethan Lawczynski, and Lynden Hanvold, set the record with a time of 4:13:1, five seconds faster than the old record.
In all, the 'Nauts picked up seven medals: One gold - Cyan Ross-Van Mierlo; four silver - Lynden Hanvold, Tenysha Ross-Van Mierlo, Genevieve Jin, and Mitchell Bourne; and two bronze - Reid Bellamy and Sierra Bellamy. The squad finished third in the team competition with 349 total points. The Trail Stingrays finished first with 816 points, while Revelstoke Aquaducks came second with 675. Bourne was impressed with the team’s effort at the meet. “Overall, we per-
formed well,” he said. “Nearly every swim was a personal best time with improvements ranging from one tenth of a second to 44 seconds. “There were a few disqualifications which was to be expected, especially by the newer swimmers who are still getting the handle on technique, but everyone seemed focused and swam the very best they could. Our third place standing overall was also great considering we did not have near as many swimmers as Trail or Revelstoke.”

Element to feature indoor skate ramp for Bro Hymn 2 CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter
The Element Club Bar and Grill in Castlegar will take on a bit of a different look on Saturday, June 9. The dance floor will be replaced by a four foot skate ramp for Bro Hymn 2 No Rulz and several local and professional skaters will perform all night while world class DJ’s spin the tunes. The event came about as a way to honour the memory of Josh Evin and raise money for Josh’s company Sk8 Shoes 4 Kids. “Josh was very eccentric,” said Florio Vassilakakis, owner of Element. “He used to come out all the time and party in Castlegar. He, my Dad, and I used to always talk about building an indoor skate ramp. It was more of a jok-
ing thing - ‘Hey, let’s build a half-pipe in here and have him come and skate on it.’ Every time Josh came into town he used to ask, ‘When are we going to build a skate ramp?’” It wasn’t until two years after Josh’s death that Florio was able to make their dream of an indoor ramp in Castlegar a reality. “This last year I finally said to Justin (Josh’s brother) - ‘let’s make this happen’,” said Vassilakakis. “I got into contact with Ty (Smith of Sk8 Shoes 4 Kids) and he’s been great. He’s made the logistical end of it happen.” Smith says he worked with local skateboarder and fellow Sk8 Shoes 4 Kids volunteer Trevor Frame in building a four foot skate ramp that would then be moved in pieces onto the Element dance
floor. “Florio’s father has built the dance floor up. That’s where the ramp is going to be installed,” said Smith. “Friday we’re going to get the ramp set up and have it tested to make sure it’s sturdy for the local and pro skaters who will be coming in for the event.” The local skaters will be Ben Demoskoff, Trevor Frame, Dennis R, Eugene Voykin, Tyler Morris, Cole Nowicki, Ryan Quibell, Nato Goers, Justin Moroz, Nate Heddle, and Acquilla Clarke. The pro skaters are part of the Kitsch Skateboard team from Vancouver and include Geoff Dermer, Make Hastie, and Cory Wilson. “It’s a mixture of locals and high end professionals from the coast who are coming up to celebrate,” said Smith.

Wow – what an awesome day of skateboarding in Castlegar on Sunday at the Sunfest Sk8 Jam at the skate park. All the skaters showed amazing grit and determination. In the beginner category Taryn skated with some great
poise and balance. In the intermediate group Elias, Tyler Amaral, Franky Bergmann and Nathaniel Peirson threw down great tricks all over the park. Franky came away with the top spot. The advanced division showcased the talents of Levi Peirson, Ryan Quibell,
Trevor Frame, Ben Demoskoff, Tom Reimer, Nate Heddle, Acquilla Clarke and Franky Bergmann. Each heat was a tough battle. In the final Tom survived the final minutes to sneak past Ryan who went down hard. In the cash shootout Alien and Levi came away with $50 each.

“This is also one of the main fundraisers for Sk8 Shoes 4 Kids. So all the door proceeds go back to the society, which then goes back to Castlegar and Kootenay youth to put shoes on their feet so they can potentially participate in skateboarding. All the money’s going back to youth.” Frame, who is one of the top young skateboarders in the Kootenays, is looking forward to hitting the indoor skate ramp. “I’ve never actually skated a ramp inside,” he said. “I helped set up a ramp inside the Lion’s Head Pub about a year ago and it was awesome. There was a good turnout and good times. I think Josh has actually skated a ramp before in Nelson at the Royal. It’s awesome to see it happen - I’m really stoked on it.” Tickets are available in advance at HTR in Castlegar, Ripping Giraffe in Nelson, Ross Vegas in Rossland, the Element, and at the door. The show will start at 10 p.m. and go right until 3 p.m. “I think it’ll be an interesting night,” said Vassilakakis. “Just to see a skateboard in the middle of a night club is something else.”

aged to keep his ball in play most of the day and his three over par back nine was still good enough to hold on and win. This was his first ever overall Junior Circuit win. The B.C. Summer games allows players age 16 and under to try and qualify, provided they have not played the summer games tournament before. In the
qualifying tournament Carson Arcuri (Granite Point), Ryan Fullerton (RTCC), Trevor Browell (Champion Lake), and Shawn Ellard (Kaslo) all earned spots. Shawn actually defeated Aiden Browell in a play-off to earn the fourth spot. In the age categories, MacKenzie Field of Christina Lake took first in the
17 -18 division and Alex Rugg and Garrett Underwood tied for second. Tyler McKay, was first in the 15-16 year division, Ryan Fullerton placed second and Trevor Browell was third. In the 14 and under division, Carson Arcuri took first, Jackson Konkin (RTCC was second with a very solid 88 and Aiden Browell placed third.
In the net division Shawn Ellard was first overall in the 15-18 and Jeff Ashton from Castlegar was first in the 14 and under division. Aiden Browell from Champion Lakes and Ryan Page from RTCC both won closest to the pin, and Jeff Ashton and David Launier won long drives in their respective divisions.

Tim Hortons Camp Day Funny men bring the laughs for a good cause Vancouver comedians Ivan Decker (above right) and Sunni Dhaliwal performed at Club Element in Castlegar on Thursday for the Kinsmen Club’s Stand Up for Charity. The event raised money for several of the club’s local projects. Although not huge, the crowd clearly enjoyed the performances. Opening act Sunni Dhaliwal showed why he is one of the top upcoming comedians in Canada. Headliner Ivan Decker also had the crowd in stitches. The rubber-faced comedian riffed on topics such Craig Lindsay photos as Walmart greeters, spiders, cell phones, and border guards.
Tim Hortons restaurants across Canada held Camp Day on Wednesday and the Castlegar location was no exception. All proceeds from coffee sales at the restaurant will go towards sending children to camps this summer. Representatives from the RCMP and ďŹ re departments were also on hand to help serve and collect donations. “Camp Day is a special day to raise money to send kids to Tim Horton’s Children’s Foundation Camps,â€? said Castlegar manager Adam Gray. “We’ve been taking donations all week. We’re all sold out of the rent-a-tents. It’s a really good cause. Every year it helps us send a couple of kids from the community to camp.â€? Craig Lindsay photo

John Robert Michelson February 14, 1924 ~ May 17, 2012 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Robert Michelson, on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Creston Valley Hospital. John was born February 14, 1924 in Lipton, Saskatchewan on the farm his parents had homesteaded in the early 1900s. His mother, Rosa, had immigrated to Canada from Gontenschwil, Switzerland while his father, Brian, was from Grantham, England. John endured the hardships of both the Depression and the war years while faithfully ensuring the survival of the family farm. In 1949, he married the local school teacher and love of his life, Blanche (nee Urzada). In 1955, John’s adventurous spirit spurred him to leave behind the farm and move his young family to BC to seek out a new life. He fell in love with the mountains and, as his family grew in size, he pursued careers in construction and logging in various parts of the province before settling in Castlegar. In 1961, he began his own logging company with his friend Leo McCarthy. A near-fatal logging accident led him to switch paths and begin what would be his most satisfying and lengthy career as manager of the Castlegar Airport. John made major contributions to community life through his work in various capacities as well as with numerous organizations including the Castlegar and District School Board, the Selkirk College Board, Blueberry Creek Irrigation, and the United Way. His strong work ethic was a deÀning characteristic, but his most important legacy was his great love of family. He was a kind and gentle soul whose integrity was matched by his generosity of spirit. John was a great storyteller, and his family and friends can attest to his repertoire of great tales that he delighted in sharing. His love of storytelling was equaled by his love of music and his innate ability to pick up any instrument and play a tune. John was predeceased by his son Lester; parents Brian and Rosa; his brothers Richard and William, and his sister Rose. He leaves to mourn his cherished wife of 62 years, Blanche. He was the caring and generous father of Charlotte (Casey Messinger), Lester (predeceased in 2010), Jim (Maureen) and Debra (Kerry Spring). He was the adored and adoring Papa and Grandpa of Brent (Jessica), Darin (Bree), Chelsea (Aaron), Laurie (Justin), Bradley (Melanie), Kristi (Jody), Jennifer (Shane), Meghan, Aaron and Kieran. He was delighted to be great-grandfather to a growing brood of (eleven and counting) great-grandchildren. A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2012, at 11:00 am at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Harry Haberstock ofÀciating. The family is indebted to the staff at Harris Unit, Swan Valley Lodge, for the caring and loving attention they gave to John, and to the nurses and doctors at Creston Valley Hospital for their great compassion in his last days. We also wish to express our thanks to Dr. Merritt for his support and care of John prior to his move to Creston. John will live forever in our hearts.

Dams roll past Lumber Jackies CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter
The Dam City Rollers won their final home game of the season Saturday night at the Castlegar Community Complex. The
Dams won a tight one, 126-110, over the Lumber Jackies from Nelson. "It feels so good to win our first game at home," said Pantsoff. "It felt amazing. We played as a team and
we won as a team. And that's unbelievable." The Rollers were up for most of the game against the Jackies, but the visitors wouldn't give up. "They definitely gave us a tough battle," said Pantsoff. "It was a little touch and go there for awhile. I think the key was we stuck together as a team all the way through. We were getting lead jammer which means we were getting points and the other team wasn't." In the opening game of the double header, Nelson's Killjoys thrashed the Valley Vendettas from Slocan 160-92. In all likelihood, The Dam City Rollers have to pretty
much win their last two bouts to qualify for the West Kootenay Roller Derby League play-offs. Klash in the Kootenays Nelson is hosting the Klash in the Kootenays - Best of the West Flat Track Roller Derby Championships on June 1517. The Klash in the Kootenays features eight of Western Canada's best roller derby teams competing for the Best in the West title, and a chance to compete at the 2013 Canadian National Championships. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com.
(Above) Pantsoff of the Dam City Rollers receives a gift from super-fan Zianna WatsonGariepy after the game Saturday. (Top left) Pantsoff and Kitty Carnage of the Rollers make Craig Lindsay photo room for the jammer.
The Kootenay South Youth Soccer Association (KSYSA) U13 Boys rep team, which is made up of players from Trail, Castlegar, Fruitvale and Rossland, went undefeated at a recent tournament in Creston. Pictured above (L-R) in the back row: Coach Richard Magner, Christian Macasso, Kaedan Magner, Isaac Lunn, Ryan Cromarty, Callum O’Shea, Eric Pilla, Matthew Zwick, Brandon Mock, Brad Baldwin, assistant coach Ralph Lunn.
