Services tackle abuse challenges BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

“We know what needs to be done. The challenge is to do it.” With those words, the Ending Violence Association BC (EVABC) summarizes findings in a report called Violence Against Women and Their Children in BC: 33 Years of Recommendations. “Sexual and domestic violence cuts across all socio-economic lines and belongs to no one community,” say the report, written by Linda Light and released to the public in April. “And while this is true and much needs to be done across all sectors, each sector must also pay attention to the specific and unique needs of Aboriginal women, women who are immigrants or refugees, those living with disabilities, women with mental health or substance use issues, women living in poverty, transgendered women, etc. “We know that women who are marginalized need all the same protections and services that ‘mainstream’ women need (and these are many), but they often also need additional help, like special assistance to access services, services in their own language or language interpretation, material assistance such as affordable housing, information about their rights, increased advocacy to help them navigate the complex systems whose personnel may lack education and training on violence and the intersections of oppression.” Over the last three decades, the report says, a number of recurring themes have been identified as being critical in addressing the problem of violence against women and their children: •access to specialized support for women who experience violence; See LOCAL, page 36

Angry at cuts to teaching positions that are out of proportion to the forecast drop in enrollment, Creston area school teachers and assistants turned out by the dozens on Tuesday to express their displeasure. About 60 School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) teaching staff gathered at the Creston Education Centre to await the arrival of board members and senior staff, who were holding their monthly board meeting. As meeting participants arrived in twos and threes they were greeted by placards and a largely silent group. Occasional calls of “You can do better” were heard. Some board members quietly greeted individual protesters and others walked through the group without acknowledging them. “We need more money,” vicechair Lenora Trenaman said. Supt. Jeff Jones stopped to talk to several groups and individuals before moving inside.

many cultures through countless ages, teachers have been revered as pillars of society, as they open and nurture the minds of the future. But does this sentiment hold true in North America today? The Creston and District Public Library invites you to explore the world of
the modern educator in its presentation of the documentary film, American Teacher. Research shows that teachers are the most important in-school factor in a child’s success, yet educators are facing so many challenges, including underemployment, large classroom sizes and a large variety of special student needs that many are leaving
the profession altogether. American Teacher reveals the frustrating realities of today’s teachers and the difficulty, and necessity, of attracting talented new educators. American Teacher will be shown at the library at 2 p.m. June 9. Admission is free. Running time is 80 minutes. For more information, call the library at 250-428-4141.

REVIEW
Confined Space an excellent start for new author BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
I have a couple of criteria that I regularly apply to books. One is whether I’ve had to hold myself back from racing through it. The other is whether I continue to think about it after I’ve put it down. I received my review copy of Deryn Collier’s Confined Space late on a Saturday morning. I sat down and read a hundred pages, then put it down to do some other things. Later in the afternoon I had to force myself to stop reading at page 200. After another hundred pages in bed, I could hardly wait for morning to come. I finished it in bed with my coffee. On that beautiful Sunday, I decided to tackle some yardwork, starting with mowing and dethatching my lawn. I ran the mower over it once, then flipped the machine on its side to change from a cutting blade to dethatching blade. First, though, I reached over to pull the spark plug wire from the plug. Hmmm, I thought, that isn’t something I normally do. Safety isn’t my strong suit, as witnessed by a missing digit and severe scarring on the hand I once put through my table saw. I might not have learned from the accident, but I did from Confined Space. Collier’s first novel, written in Creston and started an hour after she put in her final shift at Columbia Brewery, is a finetuned, edge-of-one’s-seat thriller that combines interesting, true-to-life characters with a suspense-filled plot. After reading only a few pages, I had forgotten the author is a friend and became completely immersed in the story itself. Confined Space is destined to become the first in a series of novels featuring coroner Bern Fortin, a complex and sympathetic character who has escaped to small-town British Columbia in an attempt to put distance between himself and the horrors he faced in his military career. Fortin finds himself entwined with the life of brewery safety officer Evie Chapelle when he begins to investigate the death of a worker who is found floating in a bottle-washing tank. It’s something of a surprise that a firsttime crime fiction novelist is being published by a major house like Simon & Schuster Canada. It won’t be a surprise if Collier goes on to a successful career in her chosen genre. Readers of Confined Space are left wanting more from this promising new writer.

Love of writing leads to novel
Who: Deryn Collier What: Confined Space, a new novel published by Simon and Schuster Where: The crime fiction novel is set in the fictional town of Kootenay Landing, but it sounds suspiciously like Creston When: Confined Space was released on June 5 Why: Because she has thought of herself as a crime fiction writer since she poured through her first Nancy Drew mystery BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
“I think it’s the resolution — the tension and then resolving the tension. In the stories there is always something impossible, it’s like this impossible puzzle. As I writer I have to solve the puzzle, but as I reader I’m not so interested in doing that. I’m more interested in, ‘How is this author going to solve the puzzle for me?’ So I’m not one of those readers who’s trying to be smarter than the author. It’s that restoring of order from chaos that I find so appealing.” The last thought might contain a clue as to how she managed to start into a fic-
Newly published crime fiction author Deryn Collier has always thought of herself as a crime fiction writer, even when she was working at other jobs and not writing.

Collier’s debut novel, Confined Space, is now available in bookstores. It was written in Creston, before she moved to Nelson with her husband, Ron Sherman, a school principal, and her two sons. Born in St. John, N.B., Collier lived in Ottawa before moving to Montreal for high school. She met her husband at McGill University. Of course she studied English, right? Wrong. “If I have one regret in life it’s that I didn’t do an English degree. I just loved reading and fiction and learning about literature. But I thought if I do that I’ll never get a job so I got a degree in Latin American studies instead,” she laughs. “Crime fiction has always been my preference. I remember clearly when I finished Grade 2 my Mom gave me a Nancy Drew book for finishing the year — and that’s what I do for my own kids; I give them a book — and I remember reading that book the day she gave it to me, and reading the whole thing cover to cover and feeling like something just happened. I’ve loved mysteries ever since. “I’ve always told people I didn’t have an ambition, that I didn’t want to be something. But I had that desire so early — I just squelched it. When you tell somebody you want to be a writer, they look really appalled, right?” Collier pauses to think about why she is drawn to a genre that doesn’t get much respect among “serious” writers.
tion writing career. She had been working at Columbia Brewery and finally decided that the urge to write might just turn into a lifelong regret if she didn’t get at it. So she quit her job. “I started writing Confined Space an hour after I left the brewery for the last time,” she says. But with two young kids at home, Collier had to reorganize her life. “I gave myself a year,” she says. “I had to ask myself, ‘How am I going to make this happen? Because it is going to happen.’ I took time in every week to really look at that question, about how I wanted my work life to be.” Eventually she settled into a routine, getting up at 4:30 or 5 a.m. and writing until 7. And she had the kids home all day. Despite envisioning herself as a crime fiction writer, she never did write much for her own entertainment. “But I do have Through the Foggy Lane, which I wrote in Grade 2,” she laughs. “My friend illustrated it and I still have it — a folded piece of paper stapled together. And when you are seven, that’s a book, right? “Crime writing was always in the back of my mind, though. Like many writers I had a lot of jobs. Some of them involved writing and some of them involved spray painting loads of logs or
counting beer, and they didn’t involve writing at all. But always in the back of my mind was ‘I’m not really doing this. I’m really a mystery writer.’ “When I look back I think I was working up to it for a long time. When I lived in Ottawa just before I moved to Creston I took a writing class, so the interest was there then. I do remember sitting down then and trying to write and feeling like I didn’t have it. I was in my mid-20s then. “When I told my teacher I wanted to write mysteries she gave me the best advice I’ve ever gotten: ‘You need to spend 10 years reading mysteries.’ Just after that I moved to Creston and I went through the Creston Public Library crime section from top to bottom and, seriously, for 10 years. “Then, when I was 35, with a newborn baby, it was like, tick-tock, it’s time. I can only describe it as a drive. If I hadn’t been so driven I would have given up. It was not easy. It got to the point where it had to happen.” Collier wrote three drafts of Confined Space, then was fortunate to find a literary agent she respected. “That’s when I did my happy dance!” Two more drafts under the direction of her agent were completed and, five years after she started, Collier got the word that Simon and Schuster Canada was interested. What for many years seemed to be a personal undertaking was about to move into the public realm. Simon & Schuster Canada is a division of CBS Corporation, one of the world’s premier media companies. Was there a point at which she got discouraged? “When you go to courses and spend time with writers, you see what the odds are — they aren’t very good,” she says. “I tried not to spend too much time doubting. I really just needed to write the absolute best book that I could for me. All I could do was put out the best manuscript I could and make myself as marketable as possible.“ She will continue making herself as “marketable as possible” this month, in a whirlwind of travel and promotion. Creston will be the site of the first of three Kootenay book launches. On June 14, she will on hand to meet friends and readers, sign books and read from Confined Space at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. Doors to the free event open at 6 p.m. On June 15, she will sign books at Nelson’s Otter Books from 3-5 p.m. and will read at a ticketed launch and fundraiser for the Nelson Public Library at the Nelson Brewing Company. After a week of events in the Lower Mainland Collier will be back in the Kootenays at Café Books in Rossland at 7 p.m. June 23. Full event details can be found at www.deryncollier.com.

Kim and Jon are couple with many talents; accounting consultations and advice, fund raising and hands on sweat and tears to name a few. And on the subject of “raising”, the construction of the security building has been a major focus of their attention and dedication to PAWS. These two wonderful people are a shining example of commitment to a cause, and PAWS is the fortunate beneficiary of that commitment. A commitment which involves so much more than the usual ways of helping such as general animal shelter work.
In ones or twos PAWS volunteers are great! A heartfelt Thank You Jon and Kim

Administration tells teachers to be ‘innovative’
From page 1 In the meeting room, a number of protesters occupied the available chairs but their numbers seemed to be orchestrated so that they didn’t become an intimidating or disruptive force. Early in the meeting, at a place in the agenda that invites comments from the meeting’s non-participants, a steady stream of speakers rose to state their unhappiness with the board, administration, BC Public Sector Employers Association, the Ministry of Education and the provincial government. Board chair Mel Joy called for speakers to alternate from those in the meeting room and videoconference participants in Nelson. Creston Valley Teachers’ Association president Becky Blair took the board to task for making deeper cuts than ones announced in the April board meeting. “This is not personal,” she said, referring to the protest and number of school district employees in the room. “You are not being funded adequately to do what you need to do. You can’t make soup out of stones. But will these cuts hamper students’ progress next year? I can guarantee they will.” Blair was critical of the way the layoffs were handled. “For the first time in memory they weren’t done by senior administration,” she said. “It was done in a way that didn’t allow people to really understand what is happening. It showed a lack of respect to the individuals who have been laid off.
“I’m told, ‘Maybe at .9 or .8 (proportion of full-time equivalent). We don’t know yet,’ ” he said. “This doesn’t make me want to be innovative, it makes me angry.” Each speaker was allowed to make a statement without interruption before the board moved on to the remainder of its meeting agenda.

“The cuts are reactive, poorly planned and far deeper than they needed to be.” While there is a long tradition of teacher layoffs each spring, then rehiring as student enrolment numbers and funding levels are clarified, Blair blamed a different planning model for creating bad feelings and disheartening already over-burdened teachers. Many of the speakers — teachers, assistants and parents — criticized the administration’s constant urge for employees to be “more innovative”. Music teacher Peter Simon, hired last year to resurrect a band program in four Creston area schools, was one who

received a layoff notice last week, and told his story. “The school district gave $124 to start a band program for 220 kids,” he said. Simon was able to secure a $20,000 grant from a private source to help purchase instruments. He spent last summer driving to communities as far away as Utah to collect donations of used instruments, arranged through friends, former classmates and colleagues. “That is innovative,” he said. “And this is how I was rewarded — I was laid off. I busted my butt and I didn’t ask for money from you.” Simon said he has been told he will likely be rehired.

How important is it to shop for a good mortgage rate? Submitted by Dean Bala DLC Whitehouse Mortgages
When deciding to purchase, refinance, or do an equity take out on your home, there are a number of criteria to consider when choosing a lender. Some things to consider are: interest rate, prepayment ability/penalties, portability, types of mortgage products, qualification criteria, and the types of properties a lender will lend against. Today I would like to highlight the importance of getting a good interest rate on your mortgage. With the ever increasing number of mortgage options available to consumers, a few phone calls could save you thousands. To illustrate my point, I will provide some calculations to show the large effect a small change of interest rate can have on your mortgage payment and the amount that you ultimately end up paying in interest. Consider a $200,000 mortgage amortized over 25 years with monthly payments, compounded semi-annually: An interest rate of 3.2% would yield a monthly payment of $967.13 a month, and over the course of a five year term a total of $29,629.11 in interest would be paid.
An interest rate of 3.7% would yield a monthly payment of $1019.77 a month, and in the same five year term a total of $34,372.81 in interest would be paid. So the net effect of a .5% higher interest rate would be a $52.64 higher monthly payment, and over the course of a five year term you would pay an extra $4,743.70 in interest. Not only would you pay more interest, the outstanding balance at the end of your five year term would be $1585.30 higher. So as you can see, it pays to do a bit of shopping around when it comes to getting a new mortgage. Mortgage shoppers still need to make sure that the other aspects of the mortgage suit their needs, but all things being equal, a slightly lower rate can save you a lot in the long run.

Our broken education system
I left a school board meeting last week while it was in progress, having had enough of hearing teachers vent their frustrations and anger. I was sorely tempted to head straight to a bar and pound back a couple of drinks. Prior to the School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) meeting at the Creston Education Centre, I had talked to some teachers and then stood back and watched as school board members and administrators walked through a gauntlet of protest signs. Now, teachers protesting isn’t exactly earthshattering news these days, their having been working without a negotiated contract for a year. But I was still unprepared for what I was about to hear inside the building. Speaker after speaker in Creston and Nelson, via videoconference, stood to vent their feelings about the latest round of spending cuts and layoffs. Most took pains to point out that they sympathized with the local board in trying to stretch provincial funding that they believe to be inadequate. Others were less kind, suggesting the board was complicit with the provincial government in continuing to make staffing cuts instead of submitting a deficit budget, something only one other board in the province has done to this point. Of all the provincial ministries, health and education provide services that no amount of spending could satisfy everyone involved. You could back up an endless string of dump trucks full of money and unload them into these services and no amount would be enough. But here’s the dirty, and not so well kept, secret that we have to take into account: baby boomers, of which I am one, are entering the stage in our lives in which we want and expect health care (or, more accurately,
“sick care as a friend recently described it) to be ready and waiting to accommodate us as we grow ever older. And we are running the show and there are lot of us.
30, give or take the odd teaching assistant position. And while closing schools cuts some costs, it never translates into the quite the expected savings. So the provincial government looks at the numbers and says this is what we can reasonably afford for education and the local districts are left to try to make it all work, and to take the flack when it has unhappy parents or teachers or other employees. As I said, I left the meeting early, not because I Lorne Eckersley didn’t think the rest of the evening wouldn’t be imporFor the better part of a decade, tant. Residents must regain control of wildlife area
To the Editor: The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area has taken habitat away from the wildlife, using it as a farm for cattle instead of what it was set aside for, and has taken vehicle access away from the local public. The CVWMA is governed by a board of three government officials: Tony Wideski, Andre Breault and Richard Dalon. I have spoken to each of these individuals and they say that the board works quite well. (That is their opinion, not mine.) This board, through Dalon’s management, has allowed cattle on CVWMA land, with fences in disrepair not keeping them off the dike, causing considerable damage to both the dyke and riverbank. I believe they should be held accountable for damages. I tried to stop the cattle before damage was done, but the CVWMA did as it pleased. Repairs should not come from our tax dollars, as we don’t have a say in what is done. The farmers should not be held responsible because management wanted to get rent for land that is supposed to be set aside for wildlife. The CVWMA does not get provincial or federal government funding. It has had both in the past, as well as funding from BC Hydro, donations and government grants. With all of this funding, it could not manage CVWMA at a profit. In my opinion, this is because each manager thought the area was his domain, and it has been taken away piece by piece. Too much money has been spent on the interpretation centre and not enough on the wildlife. I propose that a local board of directors be formed, consisting of local residents of the valley (nature lovers and those who have lived here and know the history), the Creston Valley Rod and Gun Club, the Regional District of Central Kootenay and Ducks Unlimited — a variety of people who want to improve the CVWMA instead of closing it down to everyone. At a rod and gun club meeting, Dalon told us the CVWMA was going to block access at Sirdar because people were using this crossing to get to Duck Lake and said we were a liability. After speaking to CPR officials, we were told there is a sign saying, “Use at your own risk.” The CPR said it has no problem with us using this crossing. The rod and gun club helps pay for the area to be cleaned up of garbage. Dalon also came to the Duck Lake Diking District meeting, telling the directors that the public is a liability and should not be allowed on the dike. I always believed that it was

the job of the diking district’s directors to act as the majority of members see fit. The East Kootenay Anglers Society raised money to put in a proper trail from the parking area to Duck Lake. This offer was declined by the CVWMA. The current trail is steep at the top and difficult to pack down boats. The CVWMA introduced a charge to leave boats there, and to fish the lake and hunt, yet we have no proper access and boats have to be left there because it is too hard to pack them up and down all the time. Hunters and fisherman already pay for to access waters and government land when buying provincial licences and tags, which each include a $5 habitat fee. We are forced to buy these permits if we want to use the area, while others have an option and are asked to donate or buy a membership to the CVWMA. Dalon continually says this is government mandate, and he hides behind these two words. Until the management is willing to work with the local people, they will continue to be the liability to the valley and the CVWMA. The residents of Creston Valley must regain control. Lions should have created a win-win situation To the Editor: (Re: “Vendor to boycott Lions street fair”, May 10 Advance, page 7) When I read the letter from Anita Wellspring about the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market and the trouble it was having with the Creston Lions Club, I was not surprised. As a former member of the Lions club, I have two issues to discuss here. The first is regarding the attitude of some of the members of the Lions club toward some of the women members. Is this club an old boys’ club from the olden days or is it a club where all members work harmoniously together for the betterment of the community? My opinion is, not in this case. While I was a member, I had personally heard women being degraded and called names, especially when it became a woman’s turn to be president or vice-president. These women — intelligent and very hard working — were an asset to the Lions club. But not any longer. They finally realized that they were no longer needed or wanted in the club, so they resigned. Now, it is the Lions club’s loss. Another issue is the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. Since when are crafts and food not allowed to be sold together? Who made this law? The Lions club should have appoint-

ed a member with a positive attitude and the ability to create a win-win situation, which includes the ability to negotiate and reason out a deal suitable for both parties — the Lions club and the farmers’ market. This is how many farmers can make a few dollars, as Canadian farmers are not subsidized. It is virtually impossible for a vendor to sell only crafts at one table across town, and food items and produce at another location. She would have to hire someone to sell the wares at one or the other table. Is there any profit to be made here from this scenario? Erhard Dallman Creston

To the Editor: It was suchEnjoy a shock to hear on CBC radio andBlossom later toFestival! read online how Immigration Minister Jason Kenney ignores the hungry in our country. It was reported on May 16 by UN special rapporteur for food Olivier De Schutter that he estimates there are two to three million Canadian people who can’t afford the diets they need to lead healthy lives; the Conservative government suggested De Schutter is wasting his organization’s money by visiting a developing country. Obviously Kenney and those from the Conservative government do not understand hunger. In B.C. alone, there were 10,000 homeless in 2010, let alone the rest of the provinces. A single mother with one child gets only $900 some a month to live on for everything! Proper food will be low on that list of essentials. Instead of criticizing the UN, it’s obvious the Conservative government should say, “Oh my goodness, how can this be happening in our nation? All these people visiting the food banks, people starving and homeless — let’s see how we can help these people!” But instead, they criticize the messenger. How heartless and cruel! Good leaders should care and have empathy for those they lead. Empathy often is only rightly portrayed when you have walked in someone’s shoes. A challenge to Kenney, Prime Minister Harper and the Conservative government: try living on less than $1,000 a month, (with no extra free perks, of course), and maybe then you will understand the daily life of so many Canadians. You would then welcome De Schutter’s analysis, and strive to help so many of the struggling Canadians. Rhonda Barter Creston

Rhubarb a healthy, tasty veggie Local shopping

Rhubarb is a good source of potassium and vitamins C, A, K and quite a few different B vitamins. The stalks and especially the root of the plant has long been used for its medicinal properties, especially in Chinese medicine.

but the stalks are used in many dishes other than pie. It’s also fantastic combined with strawberries or raspberries in jam or a sauce for mixing into plain yogurt or serving over ice cream, but it’s also cooked into savory sauces. Fresh, young stalks are sweeter and can be eaten raw. Usually they’re dipped in sugar, as they’re still very tart, even though the younger stalks are sweeter than the older stalks. Rhubarb is fairly acidic so be sure to use non-reactive cookware when cooking it, such as stainless steel. The taste can be very sour, which is why it’s usually always cooked with other fruit (to help reduce the amount of sugar need-

Rhubarb grows very easily and once established will come back each year for many years. The stalks can either be green or red, without a difference in flavor or tartness (although different varieties grow stalks that are more red, and more tart than others). When harvesting rhubarb, a few inches of the leaves should be left on the stalks if storing the rhubarb, as this will keep the stalk firm and crisp by keeping the moisture in. The stalks can be stored in a plastic bag in the fridge for a couple weeks and the leaves removed before using. It’s very easy to freeze and store rhubarb for when fresh is not available. By now, I am sure most of you have seen the message on our electronic sign board, “Shop Local. Creston First.” It is a reminder to support our local businesses whenever possible. These local businesses are owned by our neighbours and friends, pay local taxes, employ family members, purchase products from other local businesses, and support our local organizations and charities. They are an integral part of what makes our community “ours”. Following are a top 10 list of reasons why you should shop Creston first (adapted from Local First, an organization aimed at promoting sustainable economic development). 1. Local economic stimulus When you purchase at locally owned businesses, more money is kept in the community because locally owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the local tax base. 2. Non-profits receive greater support Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners. Where would our community be if we didn’t have the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors or the Gleaners or youth sports teams or any of the other local groups that add to our enviable quality of life in the Creston Valley? Many of them couldn’t exist without the generous donations from local businesses. How often do you ask a local business for a donation? When was the last time you asked an out-of-town business for a donation? 3. Unique businesses create character and prosperity The unique character of our local community is defined in large part by the businesses that reside here, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of your home and property. 4. Environmental impact is reduced Small local businesses usually set up shop in the town centre, providing a centralized variety that is much friendlier to a community’s walk score than out of town shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare an 8x8 baking dish by spraying with non stick spray, or lightly buttering. Melt the 2 tbsp of butter and mix with 1/4 C brown sugar and the ginger, nutmeg and a pinch of salt. Spread in the bottom of the pan. In a small bowl toss the chopped rhubarb with 2 tbsp flour. Pour over the butter and sugar mixture in the pan and then sprinkle the fruit with an extra 2 tbsp of brown sugar. Shake the baking dish to help the fruit settle into the bottom as much as possible. For the cake, in a small bowl combine the oil, vanilla, brown sugar, eggs and milk. Mix well and set aside. In a larger bowl combine the 1 1/2 C flour, baking powder, baking soda and 1/4 tsp salt. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well until everything is completely combined. Pour over the fruit in the baking dish and place in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-55 minutes, until completely cooked through and a dark golden brown on top. Cool for at least half an hour before slicing and serving warm with ice cream. From page 8 5. Most new jobs are provided by local businesses Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Plus, the more jobs you have in your local community, the less people are going to have to commute, which means more time and less traffic and pollution. 6. Customer service is better Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service. You are also going to see these people around town and they are less likely to blow you off or be rude because they have to face you day after day. 7. Local business owners invest in community Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave and are more invested in the community’s welfare and future. They not only sponsor local events and donate to local organizations, but also sit on local boards (see the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce board of directors, for example) and committees. 8. Public benefits far outweigh public costs Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores. 9. Competition and diversity lead to more consumer choices A marketplace of hundreds of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 10. You matter more We talk a lot about exerting influence with your purchasing choices, or “voting with your wallet”. It’s a fact that businesses respond to their customers, but your values and desires are much more influential to your local community businesses than the large big box stores. Centre offers quality child care
One of the better kept secrets up at the Creston and District Community Complex for some obscure reason is our child-minding service facilitated by our own kinder-director extraordinaire, Susan Duske. I’ll tell you, every time I walk by the Sunshine Room, where Susan watches her charges while the parent participates in a fitness or aquatic class, those kids are smiling and having a grand time and I’m sure the hour or so they are there flies by. You can always tell what the fun quotient is when the parents come and pick up the kids and they don’t necessarily want to leave. I still have some child care-age memories of being dropped off in some dingy side room in an Edmonton bowling alley where mom was obviously part of a league or something and while I remember the child minding lady listening to a morning talk show, I can almost visualize her in curlers chain-smoking Belvederes while I scrawled “Help Me!” in lipstick on the bathroom mirror. In all likelihood, that last part was the result of an overactive imagination of an 18-year-old — sorry, I mean five-year-old — but rest assured those days are gone or at least certainly are when you leave your children with us. Upbeat, well lit and safe pretty much describes the Sunshine Room, which is also used for birthday parties and small gatherings.
So, can I park my child here and go window shopping with the girls in Elk River? Unfortunately not; the requirement is that you are in the building, most likely taking a Zumba, dance or aquafit class to a maximum of two

Donations help riding program buy Cupcake THERAPEUTIC RIDING PROGRAM
Horseback riding is a fun and challenging activity for everyone and the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program makes this activity accessible to children and adults with all forms of disabilities, be they developmental, physical, emotional, behavioral or social. It’s a way to discover a whole new world of adventure, freedom, responsibility, dignity and excitement. It is also a way to improve balance and
co-ordination and strengthen muscles. Most importantly, it provides an overwhelming sense of accomplishment for everyone involved — riders, volunteers, caregivers and instructors. The Therapeutic Riding Program invites everyone to visit its facility at 849 Erickson Rd. during its annual horse show on June 10. The fun starts at 9 a.m. and runs until about 3 p.m. A barbecue lunch will be available from noon-1 p.m. Running at the same time will be a fundraising tack sale; halters of all sizes, lead ropes, saddle pads and English and western saddles will be available for purchase. Come on down and see Brian Lawrence photo how much fun we have! Eighty golfers take part in Blossom Fest tourney BY PHIL THOMAS
Eighty golfers from as far away as Australia braved mixed conditions in the 36-hole 2012 Blossom Festival Golf Tournament at the Creston Golf Club. The course held up well on a very wet closing round on May 21, causing most scores to be higher. Men’s champion 21-year-old Nik Jmaeff opened with a twounder-par score in his Sunday round and increased his lead to nine with a 75 on a wet Monday. Jmaeff (nephew of Creston Valley Bakery owner Yuri Jmaeff) is hoping to join the Canadian professional tour but realizes he needs more experience before qualifying. In the meantime, he is working in the pro shop at Castlegar Golf Club. Jmaeff commented that he enjoyed the hospitality and the course, especially the challenge of our greens. Along with Jmaeff from the championship flight, the final foursome on the Monday was surprisingly made up of three local golfers from the first flight. Len Mosher, Don Harbison and
Ed Loseth all carded fine rounds of 74 on the opening day. Their scores on the second round were disappointing, but were low enough for all to be presented with net prizes. Also on the second day, local Leigh Walker shot under par for his first nine, but finished with a 154 total to take second low gross. Third low gross was Danny Huscroft, from the Coolangacta Tweed Heads Golf Club in Australia, who, as a junior in Creston, showed great promise. He finished strongly on Monday with a back nine of level par. The ladies’ flight was dominated by local golfers with only four visitors from out of town. Cherie Baker, a longtime member and perennial champion, took a threestroke lead into the Monday round and fought off a challenge from Ruthie Hoffman and Joyce Johnson to coast home with a 164 total. The low net men’s champion was Gord Johnson with a total of net 136, edging Harbison, Mosher and Loseth by a single shot. Highest handicap Anke Croteau from Lakeside Greens Golf Club in
Calgary was the ladies’ net champion with net 151, outscoring Joyce Johnson by only two shots. Kudos to Devan Davidson and his staff for the excellent condition of the course. Congratulations also to Don Price and his committee, and Randy Panton and the pro shop for another smoothly run tournament.

Games, gold panning at museum’s Kids’ Day CRESTON MUSEUM
As we head into the beginning of June and with summer quickly approaching, the Creston Museum would like to announce that Kids’ Day will soon be here! Bring your family down to the Creston Museum on June 9 to participate in the upcoming festivities. There are many exciting events planned for this year including races, contests and a variety of games that will offer everyone a chance to win a prize. The museum will be operating the old-fashioned store again this year, with prices of three candies for a penny, in the spirit of the old-fashioned theme. Admission, games, and schoolhouse

Twenty-first century students will enjoy a trip back in time at the Creston Museum’s schoolhouse during the annual Kids’ Day on June 9.
lessons are all free, with a charge of $1 per person for ice cream and lemonade. The Creston Valley Prospectors Club will be joining the festivities for part of the day to offer lessons in gold panning. The $10 fee covers the cost of the lesson, gold is guaranteed and, best of all, you get to keep the gold that you find. As a friendly reminder, kids 12 and under must bring an adult with them. You are also welcome to bring a picnic lunch and eat it on the museum grounds. So please come on down and enjoy the day! Hunger and malnutrition undermine all other humanitarian and development goals. According to the World Food Program every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5% to 10% in lifetime earnings. Obituaries
Obituaries Edna Hleucka March 7, 1923 ~ May 30, 2012
Edna Hleucka of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Nicholas Hleucka, passed away after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s, on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the age of 89 years.
Edna was born in Estuary, SK on March 7, 1923. She lived in various locations until settling in Vauxhall, AB. She married Nicholas Hleucka on June 9, 1946. They raised their three children Elisa, Dennis, and Kim in Vauxhall and then moved to Creston, BC in 1976 when her husband retired. In 2001 she moved to Okotoks, AB to be closer to family and then in 2007 moved to Lethbridge. Edna is survived by her daughter Elisa (William) Brown; son Kim Hleucka; grandchildren Kari (Darren) Thompson, Wayne Brown, Dennis (Kerri) Hleucka, and Brianne (Cheyenne) Ludwig; great-grandchildren Avari Thompson, Joshua Thompson, and Westin Ludwig; sister Irene Rothe; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Besides her loving husband Nicholas, Edna was predeceased by her parents John Diebert and Annie McNiven; son Dennis Hleucka; and brother Robert “Bob” Diebert. A Private Family Service will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of Canada, 1254 – 3 Ave South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0J9. Thank you to Dr. Ikuta and Dr. Cahill. Many thanks to Laurel, Sharon and all the devoted, caring staff at Adapta Care 9th Ave. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels Ltd. 1-800-382-2901. Send condolences at www.mbfunerals.com.
John Robert Michelson February 14, 1924 ~ May 17, 2012 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Robert Michelson, on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Creston Valley Hospital. John was born February 14, 1924 in Lipton, Saskatchewan on the farm his parents had homesteaded in the early 1900s. His mother, Rosa, had immigrated to Canada from Gontenschwil, Switzerland while his father, Brian, was from Grantham, England. John endured the hardships of both the Depression and the war years while faithfully ensuring the survival of the family farm. In 1949, he married the local school teacher and love of his life, Blanche (nee Urzada). In 1955, John’s adventurous spirit spurred him to leave behind the farm and move his young family to BC to seek out a new life. He fell in love with the mountains and, as his family grew in size, he pursued careers in construction and logging in various parts of the province before settling in Castlegar. In 1961, he began his own logging company with his friend Leo McCarthy. A near-fatal logging accident led him to switch paths and begin what would be his most satisfying and lengthy career as manager of the Castlegar Airport. John made major contributions to community life through his work in various capacities as well as with numerous organizations including the Castlegar and District School Board, the Selkirk College Board, Blueberry Creek Irrigation, and the United Way. His strong work ethic was a dening characteristic, but his most important legacy was his great love of family. He was a kind and gentle soul whose integrity was matched by his generosity of spirit. John was a great storyteller, and his family and friends can attest to his repertoire of great tales that he delighted in sharing. His love of storytelling was equaled by his love of music and his innate ability to pick up any instrument and play a tune. John was predeceased by his son Lester; parents Brian and Rosa; his brothers Richard and William, and his sister Rose. He leaves to mourn his cherished wife of 62 years, Blanche. He was the caring and generous father of Charlotte (Casey Messinger), Lester (predeceased in 2010), Jim (Maureen) and Debra (Kerry Spring). He was the adored and adoring Papa and Grandpa of Brent (Jessica), Darin (Bree), Chelsea (Aaron), Laurie (Justin), Bradley (Melanie), Kristi (Jody), Jennifer (Shane), Meghan, Aaron and Kieran. He was delighted to be great-grandfather to a growing brood of (eleven and counting) great-grandchildren. A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2012, at 11:00 am at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Harry Haberstock ofciating. The family is indebted to the staff at Harris Unit, Swan Valley Lodge, for the caring and loving attention they gave to John, and to the nurses and doctors at Creston Valley Hospital for their great compassion in his last days. We also wish to express our thanks to Dr. Merritt for his support and care of John prior to his move to Creston. John will live forever in our hearts.

Cops for Kids hosting golf tournament fundraiser BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
An organization best known for touring the B.C. Interior to raise money for children in need is taking its message to the golf course later this month. Cops for Kids is a charitable founda-
tion dedicated to supporting children in medical, physical or traumatic crisis. The organization is made of RCMP members and supporters in the RCMP Southern Interior region. Each fall, a Cops For Kids contingent embarks on a grueling 10-day ride through the region, raising funds and awareness
for the foundation. This year, Creston’s RCMP detachment is organizing its first annual Cops For Kids golf tournament, to be held on June 28 at Kokanee Springs Golf Resort in Crawford Bay. The limited entry tourney will be a Texas scramble with plenty of prizes and a raffle. The $69 entry fee
includes 18 holes of golf, a power cart and dinner. Rooms at the resort are available to participants at a special rate. For more information or to register, call Wally Bursey (250-608-0349), Charlotte Joa (250-254-1746) or the Creston RCMP detachment (250-428-9313).

•adequate legal aid for women who experience violence; •offender accountability; •effective use of specialization; •training in domestic violence issues; •comprehensive prevention Celebrate efforts; and fishing •system accountability. “Many of the factors addressed in these recommendations are closely linked with one another. A woman’s reluctance to involve the justice system, for example, may be linked to her economic situation, to her Aboriginal status or her status as an immigrant or refugee, or to her lack of access to adequate legal aid services to help her extricate herself from the abusive relationship. Police, Crown or [the Ministry of Children and Family Development’s] lack of adherence to policy may be linked to lack of training and to a lack of system monitoring strategies. Lack of effective coordination and risk-related information sharing may contribute to a wide range of system failures, including a lack of victim access to specialized support services, a lack of consistent risk assessment and safety planning, and
a lack of offender accountability. In order to ensure that we make real progress on the key elements of an effective response to violence against women and children, we need to monitor both our successes and our failures. We need systematic data collection with regular reporting out by government, including a review of key performance indicators. “We need system transparency. We need true system accountability. “We have the knowledge and the tools to do this. What we need are resources, leadership and the will to make it happen.” In the Creston Valley, two not-for-profit agencies work in conjunction with various levels of government to support women and children who are victims of violence. The Kootenai Community Centre Society (KCCS) offers a number of services, said executive director Dina Bambrick. “The services we provide include shelter — short-term crisis or longer-term transition in independent (not communal; most shelter is in communal facilities) units this provides food and all daily personal needs, laundry, etc.; safety plan-
