with the PST / HST switch the provincial government has created a $10K rebate for purchases of new homes by first-time buyers before April 1, 2013. The intention is to keep the new home buyers’ market growing, which in turn creates jobs, benefits local economies and creates sustainability. The proposed legislated rebate would be a refund cheque that could be used to help people with the deposit on a new home, lower their overall debt or for RRSPs, which can be used as a tax deduction. “The B.C. FirstTime New Home Buyers’ Bonus is a new temporary measure designed to provide tax relief during the transition period back to the PST for families and individuals who are purchasing their first home and will

assist the residential construction industry by encouraging purchases of newly constructed homes.” www.PSTinBC.ca In Nelson, local developers of West Creek Village are matching the $10K rebate offered by the government, which means a potential savings of $20K. In today’s economy that is a real boon to the first-time new home buyer. But West Creek Village is going beyond the first-time buyers and is offering the $10K rebate to any qualified buyers of their last two fourroom units. To find out more about the B.C. FirstTime New Home Buyers’ Bonus check out www.PSTinBC.ca and to find out more about West Creek Village contact Pat Davis at 250.505.4820 and check out www.WestCreekVillage.ca.

With about 40 members the West Kootenay Camera Club has a load of talent to go around, and the members are continually looking to learn more. In their most recent competition the club called upon four expert judges to go over entries in categories including Nature; Human Interest; Photojournalism; Creative Images; Flowers; Open; Portraits; Architecture and Still Life. The photos were amassed and displayed at Castlegar’s Kootenay Gallery starting on Friday night, June 1. The exhibit had originally been slated to run a total of three days but as it turned out, the club, and the public, got a bonus with the photos to be on display right through to June 9. The show will then move south for a three day run in Trail from June 22-24 at the Waneta Mall. The club is an ideal environment for anyone interested in photography, whatever level they may be at. For instance, Vi Madrigga, creator of the first and second place submissions has only been at it for six years. It goes to show how quickly an enthusiast can progress. A person can also get some great photos

without necessarily breaking the bank on gear. Member Calvin Him says you don’t need a $10,000 camera to get great photos. What does help is a certain amount of sensitivity and the ability to know a great subject when you see it. With patience, persistence and some pointers from those in the know... large strides may be made. The club’s past pres-

ident Eileen Henschell says about 98 per cent of the credit for a prize winning photograph goes to the photographer. It’s often said, ‘the more the merrier,’ and that’s certainly the case with the West Kootenay Camera Club. Anyone with an interest is warmly welcomed to join in the fun and the learning. What’s New with What’s Old? Messages add to postcards’ charm GREG NESTEROFF

OOver 34 years att th the same llocation ti with ith the th same owner!! We’ll be here when you need us.

West Kootenay Advertiser

Part of an ongoing series about West Kootenay collectibles. Postcard collecting appeals to different people for different reasons. Most deltiologists (the pretentious name for postcard collectors) are after what’s on the front of the card, be it a specific town or theme. But there are other interesting things to watch for: the stamps, postal cancellations — and messages. While often banal, once in a while you find a gem that gives you insight into the era it was written or a fleeting glimpse of someone’s life. Here are some examples that recently sold on eBay for a few dollars each. One, an undated but circa1910s card showing Nelson’s Cottonwood canyon: “We passed so many beautiful waterfalls. Went out kodaking here and got some dandies. But we all notice the altitude so. It is 8,000 ft. elevation and so hard breathing. I can hardly sing. Have just finished another lovely stage dress. It is a nile green accordian pleated with white shadow lace and pink beads. Very pretty for dancing. Our dances are going big everywhere especially the Hesitation.” So, both an instance of the obscure word kodaking — as in picture taking — and a reference to the hesitation waltz, in which dancers suspend a foot in the air

during the full waltz measure. (Thanks, Wikipedia.) Another card showing a man in front of Cottonwood Falls in winter was postmarked Nelson, April 25, 1909 and mailed to Miss Mary Davies, 743 Greenwood, Portland, Oregon. It read: “Dear Mary, I rather like here (as much as it is possible for a Kasloite to like Nelson) and am in no great hurry to go. The falls shown are nothing to our own Powder Falls. DHB” (Powder Falls are across Kootenay Lake from Kaslo.) A card showing a bird’s-eye-view of Trail mailed in December 1907 to Miss M. Bullery of Surrey Centre, struck an om-

inous tone: “Am worried to death. Am trying to get something for closing exercises. L.W.” A teacher seeking inspiration? Finally, an unmailed card showing the original stairs from downtown Trail to the smelter (with original capitalization, spelling, and grammar) reads: “This is the steps that goes up to the Smelter Junction. There is a depot up there. Two of the trains come down town and the other stops up there. There is 290 steps on the picture. Where you see the Telephone Pole and Electric Light is just 1/2 of the way up. Where the Pole is is where the wagon road goes up to the Hill. I

wish you could see the roads winding up the Mt. It looks a little fishy until one gets used to it. The first time I climbed those steps I was Dizzy and Darned near Petered out to.” See more pictures of the described cards

Business Sweet evolution for Castlegar businesswoman

would take more than just making great chocolates, so she availed herself of some help from the Ashland Training Centre, and Employment Insurance which supplied a ‘business boost.’ She now makes the rounds to all the venues where she can display her wares. The circuit has included car shows, farmer’s markets and other sorts of outdoor events, although she has since gravitated to more indoor functions. The reasoning for the switch is obvious given the relatively delicate nature of her products. One of the pivotal events that got her feet wet, so to speak, was a golf-related function being held at the Sandman Inn back in 2010. It was a large order that she first found daunting, but with hard work and a can-do attitude, she pulled it off. She now is practically a fixture at certain shows, for example, a pair of multi-day fairs on successive April weekends in Castlegar and Trail, respectively. With everything she

needs contained in one large basket and a couple of boxes, her attractive display can be mounted in a matter of minutes. Larsen’s talents have added to the success of presentations such as the Business Expo last year at Selkirk College in Castlegar, plus the popular ‘Soup for the Cultured Soul’ event at the Kootenay Gallery where her visits are appreciated. “She always brings in chocolates to go with whatever occasion,” relates Gallery Executive Director Val Field, “like Mothers’ Day, Valentines Day or Easter. They’re very popular, especially at Christmas because she does theme chocolates that make for a very unique gift.” Loretta’s always on the lookout for new techniques and keeps up with what’s going on in the world of chocolate artistry. She recognizes the value of versatility and has since branched out to teaching her craft as well as selling her product. She has also diversified her catalogue to include

there and started my life there... getting married and having children,” she relates over a chocolate or two during a recent visit with Black Press. Loretta discovered quite early the joy of working with chocolate, making treats for family and friends. “There was a lady who had a store in Prince George and she sold the chocolates and the molds and supplies.” Getting into this sort of hobby was a natural progression for the avid cook and baker. “The chocolates were just something different to try,” she continues – “a lot of experimenting.” The idea of making a concerted effort toward her own chocolate making business came to Loretta about four years ago, after a move to Castlegar where her husband Dennis works for Mountain Transport Institute. It all made sense, after all, as the best advice is so often given – ‘Do what you enjoy!’ Loretta knew it

Trade shows, weddings, craft fairs and other special events across the West Kootenay are likely to feature the presence a lot of folks find simply irresistible. It’s an assortment of flavours that trigger happy memories, and it is presented by Loretta Larsen’s Detailed Chocolate Expressions. Loretta is in the fourth year of her enterprise and if the trend continues as it has to date... the sweetest days are definitely straight ahead. Larsen says business has tripled in the last several years, and, in a way, it’s little wonder. She’s offering a product most of us need no introduction to, and are probably already sold on. She produces a tantalizing array of chocolates with quality ingredients, expert preparation and a professional and friendly presentation. Loretta has arrived in Castlegar from Colorado, by way of beautiful Northwestern B.C. Her family emigrated in 1972. Loretta’s dad was a farmer/ rancher who had long dreamed of moving to Canada. “There was a large cattle ranch in the Kispiox area and they needed a foreman,” she explains. Loretta’s uncle had been working in the area for about six months when the job became available, he let her dad know and no time was wasted in the relocation. “We moved into the Smithers-TerraceHazelton area, so I finished my high school

Sculpture Talk

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

‘Patient Hunter’ (steel) Two talented artisans have joined forces yet again – viewers at this year’s Sculpturewalk will be the beneficiaries. James Karthein of Ridgeline Metal Works and Kevin Kratz of Goose Creek Forge have worked collaboratively over the years to produce both practical and artistic ironworks and steel fabrications. Now they are set to make a splash at Sculpturewalk with a work that has been in their collective heads for a number of years. “Both of us are wildlife and nature enthusiasts and Kevin is an inveterate bird watcher,” says Karthein. “We’ve had the idea of sculpting a blue heron for a long time because of the populations at the Waldie Island Reserve right here in Castlegar, so the subject and the moment seemed right. This is our first piece at Sculpturewalk and the reserve is a little known local treasure if you’re a fan of these magnificent birds as we are.” Their handcrafted (over 600 ‘feathers’ alone!) sculpture is a labour of love, reflective of the importance each of them place in sterling craftsmanship and workmanship of the highest quality. The quality and processing of the metal used, along with their meticulous fabrication, is reflected in the shimmer and lustre of every piece that makes up the work as a whole . ‘Patient Hunter’ stands 7 feet tall, including the ironwork depicting the derelict wharf/pier he stands on, one leg bent, ever watchful. Kratz and Karthein spent hours studying their subject matter before beginning to fabricate from the ground up. “Every piece of the sculpture you see is made by hand”, says Karthein. “Whatever we do collectively, or on our own, is all old-style, traditional handiwork,” adds Kratz. “Machines and moulds

aren’t really our thing at all.” The duo came to be an artistic powerhouse from different approaches. Kratz spent 12 years as a metal engraver working at his father’s business before opening his own forge. He teaches blacksmithing part-time at Selkirk College’s Kootenay School of the Arts. Karthein began his decades-long involvement with metal working in a bicycle frame building shop in Toronto, then spent a number of years learning the craft and skills of fabrication in Whistler prior to moving to the valley and starting up

“Whatever we do collectively, or on our own, is all old-style, traditional handiwork.” Kevin Kratz /James Karthein his own company. For each, the artistic side of their work is as important as the practical, everyday bread-and-butter pieces. Recently, they completed a large civic art project for the City of Revelstoke and, together with Simon Mitchell, have represented the province several times at the prestigious National Capital Commission’s Winterlude National Snow Sculpture competition. ‘Patient Hunter’ is another winning collaboration from two talented artists who are good friends.

AM Ford is pleased to welcome Rossland Grads - 50s to present Rossland Secondary School celebrated its 60th anniversary Friday with with three cakes and the company of graduates from not only this year, but from as far back as 1951/52 the original grad class. The cakes were topped with photos of the original and the present classes. Lois Hayes was in the original class of ‘52 and said that not too much has changed in the school from then to now, other than the gym being replaced after a fire. The class of ‘52 and the years following that mingled with current students, many of whom were quite interested in their school’s history. Arne Petryshen photo

Poultry prowl goes off without a cluck Rossland briefs The Chicken Crawl took place over the weekend. It is an event for people interested in raising backyard chickens to learn more on the subject. There are quite a few Rossland residents who keep backyard chickens and were ready Sunday to answer any questions.

The chickens are assorted varieties of heritage breeds. Some lay interestingly coloured eggs in various shapes and sizes. Those doing the chicken crawl could make their way around Rossland, visiting the various coops as they went. Progress made with historical group Rossland is making

way with its heritage commission, which presented its plans to the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary during their board meeting last week. The commission offered to be a resource for other communities in the district that want to set up their own committee. Jackie Drysdale, president of the commission, said they

keep a registry of the heritage sites in Rossland which includes over 30 buildings, such as the Miners’ Hall, built in 1898, and the Bank of Montreal, built between 1898 and ‘99. At the moment the committee is working on a three year plan for the restoration of the Rossland Cemetery.

‘Silver City’ is aptly nicknamed Trail briefs Trail has one of the highest senior populations in the Kootenays, second only to Creston, with a total population of 1,930 people — or 25.1 per cent — 65 years of age or older, according to figures released by Statistics Canada Tuesday. In fact, Trail was second in the median age category, again to Creston, with an average age of 49.8 years (Creston was 55.2), and had the second highest per capita of octogenarians and above at 9.3 per cent (Creston at 11 per cent).

As a result, Trail had the lowest proportion of young people in the zero-to-14 category with 13 per cent of the population, or 1,005 people. Over 62 per cent of the city’s population was in the working class age group (1564). A little further afield in the Golden City, Rossland led the Kootenays with the youngest median age at 39.9 years, edging out youthful Nelson that came in at 40.9. The mountain kingdom had a perfect even split of males and females, with 1,780 on each side. In Trail, women out-

number men by 450, or 4,065 to 3,615. New reservoir in service With a turn of the tap, a staple of life in Greater Trail received an important upgrade earlier this month. At the beginning of May, water began to flow from the brand new $2.1 million Coleman Street Reservoir. “We don’t see projects this big very often,” said Trail Councilor Gord DeRosa. “This was a matter of replacing aging infrastructure with state of the art.” The new structure

replaces the original open-top concrete pit reservoir, which was over 70 years old, and posed the obvious health and maintenance factors. “The age of the old reservoir, the unreliability of water quality, there were so many unknowns,” explained John Howes, an engineering technician for the City of Trail. “We were being very proactive on this one,” he added. The new reservoir, which holds 3.5 million litres of water, roughly the same as the old one, will service the West Trail corridor and into portions of downtown.

A new report from the Chartered Accountants of BC reveals that the Kootenay’s economy showed signs of recovery throughout 2011. The BC Check-Up, Regional Edition, indicates that as employment grew, the unemployment rate declined. While other indicators point towards continued economic growth, overall capital investment in the region was down slightly. “After three difficult years, our economy began to pick up last year, said Cindy Popescul, CA, with BDO Canada LLP in Cranbrook. “We have seen increased labour market activity, with full-time positions accounting for the majority of job creation. The report found that in 2011, the Kootenay’s labour market grew by approximately 2,700 jobs, or 3.9 per cent. Full-time positions accounted for two thirds of all job creation, suggesting an underlying strength in last year’s employment gains. Employment growth was driven by the services-producing sector, which increased by 4,000 jobs. Industries posting sizeable gains were accommodation and food services with 1,200 jobs, health care and social assistance with 1,000 jobs, and transportation and warehousing with 900 jobs. In contrast, the goods-producing sector shed 1,300 workers, with wood product producers reporting the largest job losses, losing 1,600 jobs. The Kootenay Development Region comprises the Kootenay-Boundary, Central Kootenay, and East Kootenay Regional Districts.

Residential Property: Eligible for under 65 year’s Provincial Homeowner Grant Average Assessment Level: SFC Tax Jurisdictions

The basic concept in taxation is: Assessment x Tax Rate = Property Taxes. An increase or a decrease in tax assessments does not automatically relate to an increase or decrease in Property Taxes since your tax rates will have changed. The following is an example of a Residential Property taxation change for an average homeowner in Grand Forks who is under 65 and eligible for the Provincial Home Owner Grant. Property assessment is done by the BC Assessment Authority and is based on the market value of all real properties in BC. Correct classification is determined for every property. Legislation is reviewed to determine if the property is fully or partially exempt from taxation. Once the assessment is complete, a Revised Assessment Roll is provided to the City. Based on the information provided on the Assessment Roll and the revenue required to be raised from property taxation for services, a tax rate is determined for each class of property. The taxing authority in Grand Forks is the City of Grand Forks. The City also collects taxes on behalf of the School District, Hospital Districts, Regional district, Municipal Finance Authority, BC Assessment Authority.

Are your house numbers in place? House numbers are important. Even in a small community like Grand Forks we need all our residents to ensure that their residence displays the proper house number. Vitally important during an emergency, the police, the fire department or the ambulance depend on these numbers to find you. House numbers should be a minimum of 6” and should be displayed prominently on the front of the house that faces the street. If your house is located on a corner lot, please ensure that the numbers are displayed on the front of the house that faces the street that is your residential address. Not sure of your correct address, please call us here at City Hall. We can help!

New for this year, the market has been organized into product sections that should make it easier for customers to navigate the market and duce, plants, prepared foods, body care, and hand-made arts and crafts. Customers can rest assured they are supporting the local economy due to the fact that 80 per cent of each vendor’s wares must be made locally to be sold at the market. A digital fingerprint scanner, directly linked to the fingerprint and criminal record databases in Ottawa, has been installed at the RCMP Detachment in Trail. This device will allow members to become much more operationally efficient in terms of processing both criminal and civil fingerprints. Additionally, they will be able to provide an enhanced level of service to all communities in the West Kootenay/ Boundary Region with respect to the processing of criminal record checks. In some instances, fingerprints are required from individuals before their criminal record checks

could be processed. The process of taking ink-based fingerprints, sending them to Ottawa, having them manually examined, and then mailed back could take several months to complete.

Waiting this long for the results was particularly troublesome to the applicants especially if they needed the results quickly for a job application or other important purpose. With the new digi-

tal fingerprint scanner results will be received in approximately one week. Police are currently working through a certification process that will allow them to receive the results almost instantaneously. Nelson-based Inspector Nick Romanchuk says police are extremely fortunate to have this piece of equipment in the West Ko ote n ay / B ou n d ary as residents from throughout the area will be able to travel to Trail to experience the quick processing times required in some instances. In the past, residents had the option of waiting for the results or driving to some distant location to have their fingerprints taken and processed digitally.

Steadfast and True In the fickle world of new vehicle technology, some manufacturers appear to be missing the point.

To be sure, Toyota makes changes to its automobiles each year, but it does so based on adopting improvements in the areas of Safety, Reliability, Efficiency and Quality.

For example, all 2012 Corollas are now equipped with Electronic Power Steering, which improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. We happen to think it’s amusing that

you can now “friend” someone on Facebook from the console of some cars. Quite frankly, we’re just interested in building the best cars in the world.

Overview At Teck Trail Operations there are currently two major projects underway to improve our facilities and enhance our performance. We have also recently completed a project to improve our environmental performance. This newsletter is designed to provide you with information on these projects and keep you up to date on what is occurring at Trail Operations. The first project is the $210 million No. 4 Furnace. This project includes building two new furnaces that will integrate into the existing lead smelting process. The project will triple our capacity to recycle end-of-life electronics such as old TV’s, stereos and other common consumer electronics. The new furnaces are expected to become operational in 2014. The second project is the $125 million No. 1 Acid Plant. This project consists of building a new acid plant to replace two older acid plants. The project will significantly improve our operational reli-

ability and environmental performance. The new plant is expected to become operational in 2013. Safety At Teck Trail Operations, our first priority is everyone going home safe and healthy every day. We have completed extensive safety planning for our major projects, including Hazard Risk Assessments, daily Job Safety Observations and an all-encompassing Major Capital Projects Health & Safety Plan. No. 4 Furnace Project Update Site Preparations Underway. Work is currently underway in the southeast corner of our property to prepare the site for the construction of the new furnaces. Preparing the site will require the removal of some trees and vegetation, installation of several access roads, excavation of the site and construction of retaining walls in preparation for laying foundations. Excavator equipment will be used to complete this work

which will be supported by dump trucks, hydrovac trucks and cranes. Site preparation work is expected to continue through the early fall and every effort will be made to minimize impacts on the community. Site preparation is currently planned to occur Monday to Saturday during daylight hours. Baghouse Construction As part of the No. 4 Furnace Project, we are constructing a new Baghouse. The Baghouse is used to filter gas from the furnaces to remove particulate and maintain air quality. In order to maximize space on our site, the foundation for the new Baghouse includes a storage facility. The storage facility will house ferrous granules, a product used by the cement industry in the production of concrete. Work on the foundation is nearing completion and, once complete, work will begin on constructing the new Baghouse on top of the storage facility.

ONE STOP INFORMATION

No. 1 Acid Plant Update Acid Plant Site Preparation: Beginning in early June, excavation and demolition work will begin at the No. 1 Acid Plant construction site, located on the west side of Trail Operations adjacent to the existing acid plant. Excavator equipment will remove existing concrete slabs, bases and substructures. That work will be supported by machinery including dump trucks, hydrovac trucks and cranes. It’s anticipated that the concrete removal will take approximately three weeks, and may result in a slight noise increase in West Trail. To minimize impacts on the community the work is scheduled to take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Environment Projects As part of Teck’s commitment to reduce the risk of environmental incidents at Trail Operations, we have completed our $5.5 million Effluent Spill Reduction Project. This project resulted in modifications

at 245 locations within our operations that will significantly reduce the risk of spills. Another component of our efforts included changes to the boiler water treatment system at Warfield Operations in response to a pH excursion in March 2011. The new system will improve the pH balance of our water. We are also nearing completion of a $1.2 million program to install on-line monitoring of in-plant process and effluent streams to allow for quicker detection and correction of any abnormal conditions to further enhance our environmental performance. We’ve made significant investments at Trail Operations in the last two decades ...to improve environmental performance, resulting in a more than 95 per cent reduction of releases of metals to air and water. If you would like more information on these or other projects at Teck Trail Operations, please contact Catherine Adair, Community Engagement Coordinator at: Catherine.Adair@teck.com or 250-364-4878.

Community Spruce budworm treatment planned for Kootenay-Boundary TRAIL STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

The western spruce budworm in the Kootenay-Boundary region may soon be on the endangered species list. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations plans to aerially treat up to 10,000 hectares of forest near Midway

and Beaverdell to reduce populations of pesky insect. Using Foray 48B — a biological insecticide that is widely used in B.C. and is registered with the Organic Materials Review Institute — the active ingredient is the naturally occurring bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk).

The biological insecticide Foray 48B will be applied by helicopter or fixedwing aircraft on or about June 15-22, weather permitting. This spray only affects moth and butterfly larvae and can be used safely around humans and other animals, according to the province. Birds, household pets, fish and benefi-

cial insects (including honey bees) are not affected. The western spruce budworm is an insect that is native to B.C. and the Pacific Northwest. In its larval stage, it defoliates Douglas fir, true firs, spruce and larch trees. A budworm outbreak has the potential to seriously harm or kill trees over large

areas. The pest management plan and maps of treatment areas can be viewed at the Kootenay-B oundary Region Forest Health Program office at 333 Victoria St. (4th floor) in Nelson, or online at: http://www.for. gov.bc.ca/rsi/ForestHealth/Western_ Spruce_Budworm_ Spray_2012.htm

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

ffor th the

Week

JJune Ju u 8, 2012

Tip of the Week: The current eclipse season is now fully active. The Solar Eclipse was in Gemini and the Lunar Eclipse was in Sagittarius. These signs are linked to the exchange and distribution of information, knowledge and wisdom. Perceptions (Gemini) and beliefs (Sagittarius) are also being activated. It is likely therefore that both will be ignited and will rise to the next level of intensity over the coming weeks and months. This placement of Jupiter is considered challenging due to a tendency to scatter one’s focus. Of course, with awareness we can direct our focus positively. Questions and concerns about security are about to increase as well, with Mercury entering Cancer. What else should we expect in 2012, the year of the Dragon and the culmination of prophesies from the standpoint of Mayan Cosmology? It is natural that some will choose to downplay the negative implications. For the sake of avoiding mass unrest and panic, this may be deemed wise. Yet, modern civilization has reached a boiling point and crisis looms on every front. Thus the ‘downplay’ of the seriousness of the human condition is also its own form of denial. All one has to do is stand back and see a bigger picture and convenient pacifiers suddenly appear naïve. Yet, faith and positive action remain the ideal. People often ask, “What can we do?” The simple answer is: something worthwhile. Astrology can help you tune-in to your own nature and destiny, so ‘that something’ feels authentic.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

A busy cycle continues with plenty of places to go and people to see. Yet, being in sync with others is the challenge. Minor upsets and confusions of late are likely. Consequently, directing your focus on home and family, or simply staying put, may be the ideal solution. Aim to achieve your communications by other means than travel.

Attending to a spectrum of duties and activities is keeping you busy. Getting everything done and satisfying all your wants and needs presents a practical, material, sensual focus. Yet, having enough energy for it all it the other question. Consider easing off on the accelerator and aim to cooperate more with others for a smoother flow.

You are on a march to enter fresh territory. This may be literally true but perhaps psychologically and emotionally as well. Your spirit of adventure and tossing security to the wind is likely to take a strong turn this week. Now it is time to attend to what you feel you need, which will curb your adventurism somewhat.

Your pace has likely been a little slower of late. Things will speed-up a little this week. Yet with so many changes unfolding in your public and professional sphere, you may want the pace to remain even and steady. Being faithful and overcoming worry may be easier said than done, yet the anti for doing so is about to go up very soon.

Venus Retrograde is playing havoc with pretty much everyone these days and you will likely agree. Although this is generally an expansive, progressive, go-ahead time for you, you may feel beset by caution and uncertainty. This is likely to change when Jupiter enters Gemini on June 12. The urge to take initiatives to expand your outreach will be activated.

Presenting a healthier image and offering more efficient service to others is a current theme. This increase in contentiousness stands to have positive results in your career. Yet your social life may not be as exciting as satisfying as you direct the bulk of your energies towards improvement. Clear the way for the new and maintain this sober focus for long term satisfaction.

Changes for the better continue to unfold in your world. You have likely endured a lot over the past few years and so have earned all the good coming your way now. Opportunities for travel and adventure or for broadening your scope of awareness, or at least for increasing your sense of optimism are on the rise.

A process of clearing the old to make way for the new continues. This may include the inspiration or need to re-invent your self somehow. As good an idea as this is, it may not be time to commit to long term investments or contracts or leases… just yet. How can you clear the old, prepare the new and yet delay deeper commitments, for now?

Expansion on relationship fronts continues and will increase noticeably over the next few weeks anyway. Gaining the attention and support of others may feel extra important. Yet, be willing to reciprocate to maintain a healthy balance. Change is certainly brewing, perhaps especially close to home. Aim for solid ground.

Overcoming the excess stress factor asks that you practice going with the flow these days. Yet, the current is flowing towards greater efficiency. Working with the currents verses trying too direct them may be the answer. Be willing to be more agreeable and negotiable with people and situations, and perhaps with inner guidance, for best results.

Your confidence levels continue to rise, at least on certain fronts. Amidst and otherwise stressful stream of events in the bigger picture, your own flow is progressing. Still, your focus will sharpen in terms of health strategies, choices and priorities. Adaptation is ever a golden key and the time has come for a good measure of it.

Creating a more appealing, efficient and satisfying state and atmosphere close to home continues. Investments in this regard are worthwhile and will likely contribute to your feeling more confident as well. You are in a metamorphic cycle and the more you cooperate, the better. If you have not been focused this way, do it now! You will be glad you did!

Conservation/Environment Local wetlands: ideal exploration terrain Breathing easier SUBMITTED

While Sunfest activities attracted many this past weekend, another group of regional residents spent the weekend exploring local wetlands. The BCWF’s Wetland Keeper course was hosted in Castlegar by the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee and Castlegar and District Wildlife Association with support from the Columbia Basin Trust. Participants learned about different types of wetlands, wetland plant and animal species, and the status of local and continental wetlands. Participants learned skills that will help them inventory and assess regional wetlands and promote their appreciation and conservation. Locally the vast majority of wetlands

About 116,000 older model stoves in use around the province can affect the health of homeowners, their neighbours and overall airshed health. In 2008 the province began the Wood Stove Exchange, to work through grants from government and matched by community organizations and local governments. Today, more than 44 municipalities and 18 regional districts have partnered with the provincial government to offer incentives and woodburning education to their community members.

Artificial wetlands have been constructed locally to help address dam impacts, and these built wetlands do have the potential to provide homes for multiple species. A mapping project is underway to inventory regional wetlands and identify opportunities to restore degraded areas. In Kamloops, Lillooet and throughout North America many schools have built small artificial wetlands on their grounds to serve as not only habitat, but also outdoor classrooms for students and communities.

VICTORIA - As Canadian Environment Week has kicked off, more than 5,000 wood-burning stoves have been replaced by cleaner burning models since the Province’s successful provincial Wood Stove Exchange Program began five years ago. This equates to a reduction of more than 310 tonnes of particulate matter pumped into the air. “British Columbians are the real heroes when it comes to taking responsibility for protecting the air we breathe,” said Environment Minister Terry Lake. “The success of this wood stove program is all about communities working together to exchange old wood stoves for cleaner alternatives and protecting the environment we val-
