Shooters’ match draws competitors from western Canada by Bradley Woods

The Bull River Shooters Association held its annual invitational match over the Victoria Day Weekend at our range near Ft Steele. 54 Competitors, men and women from their teens through seniors, ¿red 15,760 rounds of ammunition at steel targets representing chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams! The sport of metallic silhouette shooting started in Mexico and involves two styles of riÀes in both .22LR calibre and high-power (6mm and bigger). Competitors shoot from an unsupported standing position and targets are 40 – 100 meters away for .22’s and 200 – 500 meters for high-power riÀes. Thanks to the efforts of club members the range and grounds were in excellent shape. New friendships were forged and old rivalries were rekindled, supported by a fantastic BBQ Saturday night. Shooters travel from the North West Territories, all over BC, Alberta, Montana, Idaho and Washington. Some families enjoy

the annual weekend as a reunion of sorts, travelling to visit and compete against each other. A particular highlight was the group of 6 shooters who drove all the way from Yellowknife, NWT, including 3 young teens and a university student, friends travelling with 2 dads! Soaring Eagles Conference aimed at youth Submitted The Ktunaxa Nation, in partnership with Embrace BC, is set to hold the Âżrst annual Soaring Eagles Conference at the College of the Rockies Cranbrook Campus on June 8th and 9th. The focus of the conference will be “youth empowering youth, and includes workshops from Kasp (hip hop artist with videos on Muchmusic and Rap City), Linsay Willier (Runner up for Can-

ada’s Top Model), and professional DJ’s 3rDef and Sound Switch. Highlighting the two days is a youth dance Friday night, hosted by the DJ’s 3rDef and Sound Switch and headlined by rapper Kasp, who has been decorated numerous times at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Awards. Kasp shares his music with youth to motivate them to persevere no matter what happens in life. His songs tell a story of his struggle and suc-

cess, and he shares the timeline of his life with others to help others have the strength to do the same. Linsay Willier will be speaking about what it takes to accomplish your goals and dreams, while living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Originally from the Sucker Creek First Nation, Linsay moved to Edmonton at age 18 to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Child and Youth Care at Grant MacEwan College. In

Linsay is now nationally recognized as the only First Nation model to appear on a Canada’s Next Top Model and was also awarded runner up prize. The DJ’s will also be offering lessons on how to mix your own beats throughout the conference, along with many other activities such as Peaks Indoor Climbing Wall as well as a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, with a number of great prizes such as iPods, basketball nets, XBox and a BMX bike. The conference is open to all youth ages 12-30. Registration starts at 9:00am on Friday June 8 in the College Gym, with the dance running from 6:00pm-11:00pm that evening, with day two of the conference starting at 9:00am on Saturday. The remarkable Mick Boyle from Mount Baker Secondary School in Cranbrook, BC, has been selected from more than 1000 applicants across Canada to participate in the awardwinning Shad Valley program in July 2012 “Entrepreneurial thinking is crucial to keeping Canada competitive on the world stage. Shad Valley encourages innovation early in the minds of high school students to help them develop an entrepreneurial framework,” says Barry Bisson, President and CEO of Shad Valley. Mick will spend a month living in residence at one of 10 host universities across the country. 500 of our nation’s brightest high school students will converge in an exciting atmosphere centred on fusing innovation, entrepreneurship, science and technology. Through lectures, workshops and team-building activities run by university faculty and industry leaders, students are exposed to advanced topics not regularly featured in high school curriculum. This exposure, combined with

Shad Valley’s outstanding reputation, gives participants a strong advantage when applying to university and in their future careers. “We’re building tomorrow’s industry and academic leaders at Shad Valley, instilling a spirit of excellence and exposing them to science and business in a dynamic environment. The strong sense of community created for participants is one of Shad Valley’s biggest strengths,” remarks Bisson. With over 30 years as a not-for-pro¿t, Shad Valley exposes participants to science and innovation in a fun, teambased environment, and encourages them to grow in ways they never anticipated. Acceptance to Shad Valley is a highly competitive, application-based process. Participants have earned top marks, have a strong community focus and come from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Scholarships and bursaries provide assistance to successful candidates needing support towards their participant fee. Shad Valley looks for grade 10, 11 or 12 stu-

dents with: - High academic achievement, with a passion for science, engineering, math or technology - Exceptional drive, initiative, creativity, and an entrepreneurial mind - Excellence and leadership in diverse pursuits, including athletics, the arts and work - Strong volunteer impact and outstanding interpersonal skills “At Shad Valley, we inspire participants to dream big and achieve their full potential,” concludes Bisson. “The personal growth that participants experience is life-changing and transformational. With increased con¿dence and enhanced problemsolving skills, Shad Valley alumni are ready to make a strong impact on Canada and the world.” Shad Valley gives students an academic head start for university and the con¿dence needed to become our future leaders. These students become Top 20 Under 20 winners, Top 40 Under 40 honourees, Rhodes Scholars, Entrepreneur of the Year recipients, patent holders, senior executives and business owners, to list a few of their many accomplishments. And this summer, Mick will be representing your community in the program!

Your opinion matters. That’s why we’d like to hear from you before proposing any changes. ICBC is updating the way we set premiums for Basic vehicle insurance coverage. You’ve told us the system would be fairer if lower-risk drivers paid less for their insurance and higher-risk drivers paid more. We agree. Before making any changes to our current system, we’d like your input. We’re considering several options that may impact what you pay for your Basic insurance in the future. Your feedback will go into the final changes that we propose for fairer Basic vehicle insurance pricing. To learn more and to add your voice, attend a public open house in a community near you or go to icbc.com. We hope to hear from you.

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Water Gardening Water is a fascinating element in nature whether it is a calm still lake or a quietly trickling stream. That same tranquil scene can be yours with either very little effort or a whole lot of work, depending on the space you have to work with, your energy levels, your resources and your budget. Plants that grow in water gardens are classified into three groups. Using plants from all three groups will keep your water garden in biological balance by providing oxygen to the water as well as food and shelter for the animals that share your pond. MARGINAL and EMERGENTS In nature, marginal plants are found along the edges of a pond or shallow bog where their roots are attached to the muddy bottom. These plants are also called emergents because portions of their stems grow above water. Common examples include cannas, cattails and arrowhead. Marginal plants grow in water 1-6 inches deep so they can either be planted right in the ground or in a container placed on a shelf or on top of a block at the correct water depth. FLOATERS Floaters grow further from the edge, between the shallow and the deep water. These plants have leaves that float on the surface instead of below or above the surface. Plant enough floaters to cover 50-75 percent of the surface area of the pond. These plants are important because they cover the surface of the water to a point that will limit the amount of light reaching the depths of the pond which will deter algae growth. They also provide a great protection and hiding spot for fish. Common examples of floaters are water lilies, which are planted or placed 12-24'' in the pond with their roots attached to the bottom, underground stems ending in leaves that float on the ponds surface. Other floaters such as water lettuce or water hyacinth do not have roots to anchor themselves - they just float freely on the surface. These are also great for a water bowl or any small water feature. SUBMERGED This group grows completely submerged under the surface of the water. They are often referred to as oxygenators. These plants help combat algae by consuming excess nutrients. They also provide cover for fish and produce oxygen during daylight hours. Roots of these plants are not used for nutrient or water uptake, but only for anchorage. Because of this, many oxygenators may be planted or potted in gravel. Most aquatic plants require at least 5 hours of direct sunlight to grow well so keep this in mind when you decide where to build your pond or place your containerized water garden. Fertilize your container grown plants with slow release tablets placed in the container at recommended rates. Floating plants are generally fertilized with liquid or water soluble fertilizers specifically manufactured for aquatic plants. Follow label directions carefully since over fertilizing can cause too much algae growth. A water garden, whether it is a water-proof container on the patio, a half-barrel with a fountain or an in-ground pond, can bring the sights and sounds usually found near lakes or streams right into your own backyard. At your local garden centre, we can help you with all your pond products, plants, and fish selection, so come on down and get inspired. Till next time… Happy water gardening. Submitted by Myrna

It is with a very sad heart that we announce the passing of Rena Theresa Silzer of Galloway B.C. Rena passed away on May 29 at the Fernie Hospital, surrounded by her family. Rena was a long time employee of Bul River Minerals where she ran the kitchen operations. Those who have had the pleasure to enjoy a meal there know what a wonderful cook she was. She also was the wonderful baker of the pies and tourtiere that were sold at the Back Country Meats in Fernie as well as Jaffray Sports in Jaffray. Rena was a large supporter of the BCSPCA and was very committed to animal care. She was loved and respected by those she worked with at the camp, she loved every minute she spent there over the years. Rena is survived by her Daughter Della Rogers, her son in law Kent Rogers and her Granddaughter April Lindenbach, all of Regina, Sk. She will be missed terribly by not only her family, but those who knew her, worked with her and were proud to have her as a friend. In honour of Rena, we ask that if you are so inclined to make a donation the to BCSPCA on her behalf.

OBITUARY Kenneth McLennan 1944-2012 It is with great sorrow that the family of Ken McLennan announces his passing at the age of 67 yrs on May 30, 2012, with his family at his side at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. A Celebration of Life was held Thursday June 7, 2012 at the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook. Ken was born August 14, 1944 in Cornwall, Ontario to Angus and Grace McLennan. He started his career as a Conservation Officer in 1966 in Kemptville, Ontario after graduating from the Ontario Forest College. Soon after he met his wife Brenda and they were married on August 9, 1969. His career moved them from Ontario to the North West Territories to BC where they finally settled down in Cranbrook in 1977. He retired in 2003 from the Ministry of Environment. Those who knew Ken also understood his passion for the outdoors. In the winter he could always be found at the ski hill with his many ski buddies or in the backcountry finding the freshest powder runs he could. In the warmer months he enjoyed hiking, biking, kayaking, and fishing. He continued to follow his heart with wildlife conservation by checking on local lakes for Ducks Unlimited. He took great pride in raising his daughters so they could experience the outdoors and was even more proud to start showing his grandkids the same experiences. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; daughters, Angela (Jay) Groeneveld of Okotoks, AB; Tasha (Glen) Johnston of Kimberley; and 5 grandkids, Chase, Tanner & Tessa Groeneveld and Paige & Parker Johnston; brother in-law, Kevin (Kelly) Bulmer of Cranbrook. We cannot express our thanks enough to Dr Lenz and the amazing nursing staff on the 3rd floor of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. You all made Ken's journey the best it could of been and have touched us all with the special bonds you have made with him. We will all miss him dearly now that his 'nookie days are over' In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ducks Unlimited or to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Foundation/Paliative Care.
