The annual Family Fishing Weekend is a great time to sport fish in the British Columbia, when freshwater angling is free each Father’s Day weekend. Residents can fish without any need for a fishing licence on June 15-17 only, and visitors are offered a free, three-day licence for fishing during that weekend. An event at Horse Lake will be hosted by the province together with volunteers from the Lone Butte Fish & Wildlife Association.
The Family Fishing event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 16 at Cariboo Bonanza Resort, located on Watson Road, 16 kilometres east of 100 Mile House via Horse Lake Road. Event organizer Bill Mattershead says 18 lucky children will win a fishing rod-and-reel set, and everyone can enjoy the free hotdogs and cold drinks. The first 10 children to arrive, who don’t already have

was chosen this year due to its easier access. The annual event is intended to rejuvenate family fishing activities in the province, for the benefits of fresh air and fun while enjoying the province’s beautiful outdoors and learning something about our native fish and their habitat. It also helps promote fishing licences to be sold over the rest of the year, which contribute nearly $1.2 billion to B.C.’s annual economy.

“During the Second World War, school kids did the farm work. When you were eight or nine years old, you were farming and that was the way. They put you on a team of horses and told you to go.” The auction gets underway at 10 a.m. and is being conducted by BC Livestock Producers Co-Op. Its location is 83 Mile House on Highway 97.

Ray says. “It’s like a disease. Once you start, you can’t quit, really. “I’d hate to admit how much I’ve spent over the years. I’ve done it all my life. “It’s one of those things you’re brought up with and I took an attraction to, and this is what it ends up like.” He notes it’s getting harder to find the old stuff these days, but people like to collect it because it brings back memories.

Time is catching up with Ray and Vi Young, owners of 83 Mile House Farm Equipment Museum and Historic Site. After five decades of collecting antiques and 11 years of displaying them for the public, the two are ready to retire. On June 16, their entire collection goes up for auction and that means more than 1,400 large pieces, including farm equipment, wagons, buggies and cutters will cross the block along with countless smaller pieces, such as wind-up gramophones, gold scales, milk cans and many household items. “The collection has gotten too big and we’re selling off everything,” Ray says. “It won’t hit until everything is gone.” About one dozen buildings, including a few historic ones, house many of the items and several acres outdoors are covered in old farm equipment. He and Vi have been dedicated collectors, having once brought back two semi-truck loads from Saskatchewan. They haven’t sold much over the years,

Concert benefits bike club
Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
The B!G Show folk, roots and rock benefit concert raised some big bucks for the Hun City Bike Club on June 2. Musically talented 100-Milers and former residents got together at Martin Exeter Hall to sing and entertain, and through ticket sales, collected $1,284 for the local bike club. Dave MacLeod, a main co-ordinator and member of the band, The Milers, says the concert was a great success, with slightly less than 200 people in the audience. “People thought they were coming to support the cause and see people strum on guitars. They were amazed the music was the high quality it was and lots were requesting to have it occur again next year.” The list of entertainers included Candace Copley, Andy Krenz and the Yokefellow, Drum and Bell Tower, Kevin Skelcher, Justin Gobin and Oren Gobin. Only MacLeod and Copley live in the South Cariboo and the rest were former residents who donated their time and talent to come home and help out. “All of the musicians did it for free and they have to be thanked for the time,

Seminars to teach dogs new tricks Cariboo Canine Center will be holding Tracking Seminars during the next few months. Instructor Kay Gibson has been a certified Master Dog Trainer since 1998. She will be holding courses in obedience, tracking and nose work this month. The tracking seminar will be held on June 15-17. This course is an introduction to tracking and will cover the qualities of scent
and odour, master tracks and stranger tracks, and consists of lectures video and practical work with the dog. It is a fun course whether you are just finding your friends or preparing your dog to go further into searching for someone lost, says Gibson. In addition to obedience and tracking, the center will be holding courses on the newest and fastest growing dog sport in North America,
“Nose Work.” This is a sport that can be done by any dog, she adds. It is based on the dog’s natural ability and desire to hunt. Dogs have an amazing ability to distinguish different odours and a natural desire to hunt, Gibson notes. Nose Work is designed to develop the dog’s natural scent-
ing abilities by utilizing its desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. “It is a great way for your dog to have fun, build confidence and burn mental and physical energy. Most dogs even those that cannot do Agility or Obedience can do well in this sport and it is a great way to have fun with your

dog and to amaze your friends with your dog’s talents.” Nose Work is a funbased course and can be practiced in your own home or anywhere. Enjoy Nose work, enjoy yourself and enjoy your dog, she adds. For more information, call Gibson at 250-397-2670 or e-mail kgbcinternet.net.

The current water restrictions of 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on odd or even numbered days, based on your house number, are due to a planned reduction in the District’s Water Treatment Plant (WTP) total water outflow. The fi lter sand in the plant is being replaced, which reduces the outflow by approximately one third. This capital maintenance item has a projected completion date of June 30, 2012. Once the WTP is back up to full capacity, the watering restrictions guidelines may be revisited, so in the meantime, compliance is mandatory. Over the Rainbow over the moon By Dennis Tupman Eclectica Community Choir of 100 Mile House wound up its season with a heavenly benefit spring concert at Martin Exeter Hall on May 27. The choir is directed by Jasmine Kreschuk, with accompanist Donna Forward. This choir has made a practice of donating 100 per cent of its gate receipts to charitable causes in the community. On this occasion, the recipient of the concert funds was the 100 Mile District General Hospital Auxiliary. Over the years, this auxiliary has purchased items that often are not covered
by government grants or general operating funds. With the increasing number of seniors in our community, auxiliary spokesperson Yvonne Craig says they are relying more and more every year on the services provided by the local hospital. “In the past, the auxiliary has helped pay for such things as X-ray and cancertreating equipment, as well as items that help make the hospital experience more comfortable for patients.” Sunday’s spring concert used the theme, Over the Rainbow. It included a rainbow of music of diverse eras and
styles, from pop to Mozart, as well as solos and ensembles from individuals and groups from within the choir. Guest performers included Brian Beattie on trumpet accompanied by Daven Mapson on the mammoth Martin Exeter organ, performed the wellknown and stirring “Trumpet Voluntary” by Jeremiah Clarke. “I have always wanted to play with
the organ,” says Beattie. “ I had to come to 100 Mile to do so.” Eclectica will also open the July 1 events at 108 Heritage Site for this year’s Canada Day. New members are welcome for next season’s activities, which start in September. For more information call Helen Lennox-Lau at 250791-5303, or Dennis at 250-456-2302.

PLAYOFF PANDEMONIUM Balance of Playoff Pandemonium pool standings from the June 6th Free Press (as of June 3, 2012)
WEEK OF JUNE 10 TO 16, 2012
THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: CANCER, LEO AND VIRGO.
ARIES
This week you wake up ready to conquer the world, metaphorically speaking of course! You’ll be animated by lots of energy and the desire to accomplish great things. TAURUS
You want to undertake big changes in your diet and the way you live. You’ll succeed in working small miracles on your body. GEMINI
Your circle of friends will expand, just like your professional network of contacts. These people will be of benefit to you, materially as well as psychologically. CANCER
You are the type of person who can bridge the gap between reason and emotions. It is this potential that will help you to accomplish a task or even help someone. LEO
You will soon be on vacation, although it’s likely you’ll only organize something with your friends at the last moment. There will also be a great opportunity to party. VIRGO
If you’re in the process of moving, you will realize that huge changes are coming and that a new, more stimulating life is waiting for you around the corner. LIBRA

South Cariboo horses have a new roof over their heads Free Press
The 100 Mile & District Outriders Club grounds behind the South Cariboo Rec. Centre, has had horse boxes for about five years, says Outriders president Michael Kidston. He recalls picking them up from a stable in Delta. “I can remember the long day when we went down to get the boxes, but I can’t remember if it was four or five years ago, says Kidston. “We didn’t get home until midnight and a group of people went down the next day to unload them.” It was late fall when they started
putting the walls up, and with the bad weather coming on, they decided to wait until spring to complete the job. The building inspector at the time gave them a bit of a run-around, Kidston says, adding finishing it took a bit of time. “We also thought we would put a permanent roof on the structure, but that would have cost $25,000. Last Saturday, we got the canvas roof on 18 of the 36 boxes.” He adds they need some metal parts to complete the rest of it. The main impetus behind this was Back Country Horsemen chair Peter Reid, says Kidston. South Cariboo BCRA Rodeo presi-
dent Randy Brodoway along with volunteers from all three organizations did the work. The May 19-20 rodeo weekend was the first time the horses stabled here had a roof over their heads, Kidston says, adding the boxes will have a lot of use over the upcoming season.

Feds funding brain research K a m l o o p s Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod says the announcement the federal government is creating the Canada Brain Research Fund will be a significant benefit for all Canadians. “With one in three Canadians facing a neurological disorder, injury, or psychiatric disease at some point in their lives, this investment in neuroscience research will affect more than 38,000 people in KamloopsThompson-Cariboo
alone. It will also strengthen Canada’s position as a world leader in research on the identification and treatment of brain disorders.” Common brain disorders include d e p r e s s i o n , Alzheimer ’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, autism, brain tumours, traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, schizophrenia, addictions, post-traumatic stress, Parkinson’s and epilepsy. The new fund will provide up to $100
Litter free lunch day cuts garbage in half By Monika Paterson As part of their science and math class, 100 Mile House Elementary School teacher Margot Shaw and her students went to all the classrooms and collected and weighed all the garbage, which weighed 64 pounds. The collection was held without informing the fellow students about what it was for. “[With] good science, you do not want to bias the results,” says Shaw. Two days later in conjunction with
Earth Day and the school-wide litter free lunch program, Shaw’s students again collected and weighed the garbage. It was cut in half to 32 pounds, which was a dramatic drop, due mostly to the use of reusable containers to carry their lunches and snacks, and minimizing of prepackaged foods. At this time, Shaw says she isn’t planning on another litter-free lunch, but hopes the students will continue to cut back.

million to the Brain Canada Foundation, which will then work to find donors and partners who will match this amount, effectively doubling the investment, she explains. The foundation will raise the matching funding through private donations and charitable contributions, McLeod says, adding this funding will go towards research to advance
the understanding and treatment of brain disorders. Brain Canada will be able to draw from its many past accomplishments to guide this new avenue of research. For example, a Brain Canada research initiative led to the identification of new agents that protect the brain from injury, such as ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D.
