West Fraser partners with CNC to address trades shortages AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter A partnership between West Fraser Mills and the College of New Caledonia is targeting the skills shortage. West Fraser Mills Ltd. signed an education partnership agreement with CNC Tuesday, which will lead to local training opportunities for West Fraser employees as well as increased access to programs for students in north-central B.C.

The agreement means CNC’s Quesnel campus will become the “College of Choice” for West Fraser Mills employees. “When people grow up in a community and train in that community, they are more likely to stay in that community,” West Fraser vice-president of wood products, Ray Ferris said. “We will collaborate with West Fraser Mills on designing and delivering programs to meet industry-related needs,

Willy Blizzard to play Sunset Theatre June 15 Vancouver’s touring folk/ roots trio Willy Blizzard is on tour here in the Cariboo with a performance at the Sunset Theatre in Wells on Friday, June 15. “We are absolutely looking forward to playing this awesome performance space, with it great acoustics,” band frontman John Hough said. And, as a special treat, Williams Lake citizens will

be lucky to catch them for a free concert at Williams Lake Farmers Market on Friday before the band heads out to Wells. “This show is essentially a gift to the community,” Hough said. “The idea of local sustainable food is close to our heart.” Hough’s vocals have been called the smoothest baritone west of the Rock-

ies. Along the way to his music career though, Hough managed to pick-up a degree in agriculture. In fact, he taught agriculture in 100 Mile House many years ago. The Willy Blizzard trio (www.willyblizzard.com) has been touring with their album. In From the Cold, throughout Alberta and B.C. and their original music has been called truly gorgeous Canadi-

ana. Recently showcasing in Memphis, the group is featured on the 2012 CD: Celebrating the Best in B.C. Music. Audiences will enjoy their original brand of fresh organic alt/folk. Catch them at Sunset Theatre, Wells, June 15, Sylvia’s MusicFest, West of Quesnel, June 16; Prince George Legion; June 16 evening; and ArtSpace, Prince George, June 17.

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

Educate: Test: Share:

Educate yourself, your family and your friends about HIV. Visit HIV101.ca today. The only way to know you are not positive is by getting tested. Request an HIV test today. Please share your new knowledge about HIV with others, and please encourage everyone to get an HIV test.

It’s great to have Quesnel as my home base again after the long spring session of the Legislature. The end of session does not mean MLAs go on vacation, however. They simply move their base of operations back to their communities. I’m always taken aback by people who believe that MLAs don’t work if the BC Legislature isn’t sitting. I had someone come up to me this past week and tell me they think we get too much time off now that the Legislature supposedly sits in accordance with a fixed calendar. “Must be nice to be off till the fall,” the person quipped. The reality is that when the Legislature sits MLAs simply add the burden of their Victoria workload to their ongoing constituency obligations. Once the Victoria workload disappears, MLAs re-orient their focus back to full time constituency work. Ministers don’t have it that easy. They must carry on with their ministerial obligations (equivalent to those of a CEO of a small, medium, or large corporation, depending on the ministry) as well as their constituency responsibilities. I don’t envy ministers when we’re in Victoria and they have to add estimates and legislative debates to their workload, while being lobbied by every MLA because of their increased accessibility when the House is sitting. This summer I will continue to work on a variety of issues affecting the Cariboo. This past week I hosted two forums in Quesnel and Williams Lake with BC’s Ombudsperson to discuss seniors’ care, for instance. I’ve also been meeting with Ministry of Transportation officials to talk about repairs and upgrades to our roads, and I plan on taking an active role in helping our communities address midterm timber supply issues. It’s going to be a busy summer. So, no, I’m not on vacation now that the session has ended, but I do have the luxury of being more focused on constituency matters and in getting around to the various communities in the riding. Constituency work is the most enjoyable and fulfilling part of this job, and I can’t always say the same about the nature of my work in Victoria when the Legislature is in session. www.bobsimpsonmla.ca

Flood watch issued A flood watch has been issued by the BC River Forecast Centre for rivers in northeastern B.C., including the Fraser River, due to heavy precipitation in the upper Fraser watershed. The five-day river level forecast calls for rapid rises in water levels on the Fraser. The City checks the river level on a regular basis while monitoring infrastructure such as roads, trails, and storm, water and sewer lines to ensure public safety. The City requests that residents stay away from the banks of the Quesnel and Fraser Rivers as well as Baker Creek. The slopes can become very

slippery during high water incidents. That combined with fast-moving water creates a safety issue. People are urged to keep careful watch over children and pets as well. High water flows are expected to continue over at least the next two to three weeks as the snowpack continues to melt. The City may need to place safety barriers along portions of the Riverfront Trail or roadways; the public is asked to respect those barriers. Imagination Park back for the summer Imagination Park is on track to bring another fun and educational summer to children from ages six to 12. Organizer Athena Beauvillier said this year, they have some special events planned for the kids and there are many spots left for most of them. “The second week we’re going to Moose Meadows, so we go on the hay rides and there’s some animals out there,” Beauvillier explained. “We get to do crafts and there’s a lunch planned there for everyone.” The next week, Imagination Park does a whacky water slide day at LeBourdais Park. “The kids get to go down the hill with soap and water and we provide lunch for the kids,” Beauvillier said. There’s a kids carnival planned, during which some carnival games are set up for the kids. “In the end, the

kids use their tickets, which they all receive, to pick out a prize,” Beauvillier explained. The next week, the camp’s special event is Corn Meal and Maze. “There are hay rides there too and a scavenger hunt,” Beauvillier said. “The kids get to check out this old house that’s been there for a long time and they just love going in and out of the corn maze.” The last week, Beauvillier’s favorite, they have the Rec Centre Sleepover. “The kids get to play games in the dark, run around, play bingo, they get to dance around, go swimming, there’s pizza and then a McDonald’s breakfast in the morning. “Those are always fun. “The first week, we bring the kids to the corn maze and they get to try it out and go on a hay bail ride, which they always love,” Beauvillier said. The camp is also split into different weeks, each with its own theme.

“The first week’s theme is I Am Canadian, so we’re doing a tour of the fire station and doing some activities there,” Beauvillier explained. The second week is Mexican Mayhem and the third is Quesnel’s Got Talent. “The kids enjoy that one,” Beauvillier said. “We do a lot of karaoke.” The fourth week’s theme is Mad Scientists, where kids have the opportunity to explore their inner creator. “The kids get to do experiments and we sometimes partner up with CNC so the kids can use the lab there,” Beauvillier said. The next week, kids get to explore time travel and learn about cave men, pirates and the wild west. Athletics dominate the sixth week with the theme Sports of all Sorts. Kids get the chance to stay active that week with non–stop sports action. If you feel like Christmas is too far away, the next week might be perfect for

your child, August Christmas. The week is complete with a Christmas tree, some presents and lots of food. Week eight is all about game shows and kids can see how they would do on popular game shows such as Wheel Of Fortune, Deal Or No Deal, Who Wants to be a Millionaire and The Price is Right. The last week’s theme is Summer Survivor. The camp runs from July 2 to August 31 and kids from age six to 12 are welcome, although some exceptions are made. “We do accept five year olds if they have completed kindergarten,” Beauvillier explained. The camp runs from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., but Beauvillier said arrangements can be made if you need care before of after those hours. For information, call Beauvillier 250-9928200.

s the clouds roll in again, I’m relieved when I realize I won’t have to go to the garden after work. I can remember when I would eagerly wait for quitting time at my paid job to run home, grab a sandwich and head to the garden. But those days are gone. I’m getting too old to do two jobs in one day and unfortunately, it’s the gardening that has to go. I cleaned out a flower bed on the weekend and my hand is still bruised from working with the claw – a great tool but obviously better suited to younger hands. Many of my previously well-tended garden spots are now returned to grass, another casualty of my advancing years and when I look for low-maintenance, I’m actually searching for no maintenance. But getting older has it’s advantages. I don’t have to prove anything to the world. Whatever I once claimed I would accomplish, I either did or didn’t, but it really doesn’t matter. My family is actually approaching self-sufficiency. My job has become one of enjoying their company, hearing about their exploits and sharing in their dreams for the future. Don’t get me wrong I still have things I plan to do as I age but they won’t be the lofty dreams of youth, they’ll be the mellow musings of an older, wiser woman. I’m planning a vacation – all by myself. Something I’ve never done before and my focus for the entire trip is to see new things. My brother lives in the Comox Valley and I want him to be my tour guide. He’s only two years younger than me so we’ll share a common pace. My best friend lives in Victoria and I hope to stroll through the legislature and maybe take a glass-bottom boat tour. And my sons in Vancouver have all sort of plans for their time with their aging mother – all on the common theme of things I’ve never done. I’m not afraid of aging. I find it freeing. I can rest on the wisdom I’ve earned with every bad decision, every wrong path and every success. I’m going to enjoy this part of the journey. – Annie Gallant, Observer reporter

Children are so eager to grow up E

ver since my daughter learned to walk she’s been pushing around a pint-sized shopping cart in the grocery store. Now she’s asking to do the shopping without me. “Please Mom,” she pleaded on our last trip to the store. “You wait in the car and I’ll get everything by myself.” I realize she’s a capable, independent young lady, but really? She’s only eight. “You can do the shopping,” I agreed, handing her the short list of things we needed. “I’ll just hang out in the magazine aisle until you’re ready to pay.” Resisting any help at all, she finally agreed that she would come and get me when she was done. So off she went on her own to tackle the list. She was excited that people would see her shopping alone and perhaps mistake her for a very small grown-up. About 20 minutes later she

On A Brighter Note was back with all the items crossed off and her little buggy full. Yet it wasn’t enough that she wanted to play the part of Mommy; she wanted to play cashier too. “Oh no,” I complained. “Not the self checkout.” “Please Mom!” she said. “It’s fun!” Okay, I know when I was her age I would have loved shopping by myself and then checking out the groceries on my own afterward. But now that I’m older I’m not only less enthusiastic about shopping, I like to lazily stand at a regular fullserve check-out thumbing through magazines while the cashier does all the work.

to enjoy being a kid because it really doesn’t last long. With summer holidays on the horizon my children aren’t asking to do all the fun things I associate with being a child; they both want to get a job. “I want to work in a restaurant or babysit,” my 11-year-old son said recently. “Me too!” agreed Daisy. A little young for all that, I made up a list of extra jobs for them to do around the house so they could earn their own money and I could have some more help. “Driving a car must be so much fun,” Daisy said on our way home from the store. “I can’t wait ‘til I drive.” Maybe in another eight years, baby girl. For now, just stick with the shopping cart and your bicycle and enjoy being a kid. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. You can watch her videos and read her columns at LoriWelbourne.com

Since Daisy had done such a great job and was excited to scan the groceries like she does when she’s with her dad, I prolonged her fun and handed her my debit card. Naturally I stood back a few feet out of her line of vision so I didn’t cramp her style. Watching her play-act being an adult, I was reminded of how much of this kind of thing I wanted to do when I was younger and how I yearned to one day be doing them for real. “Enjoy being a kid,” my parents would tell me. “It doesn’t last long and being a grownup isn’t as easy as you think. It sure looked easy to me. They got to go to sleep when they wanted, eat whatever their hearts desired and make every single decision, while my little brother and I had to play by their rules. I couldn’t wait to grow up and be the boss. Knowing now what my parents were talking about, I’m also telling my children

FEEDBACK

Big cheque, big smiles Quesnel WalMart assisted the Riverview PAC to raise $975.13 through a variety of events. The store also applied for and received a matching grant of $975.13 from WalMart Canada to bring the total funds raised to $1,950.26. Autumn MacDonald photo

The calf was so little and there’s this huge horse thundering behind him, I can’t imagine how that little calf felt. Oh wait, yes I can – I’m sure he was scared out of his mind. I hate rodeos and circuses and other venues who mistreat animals.

Abuse happens all the time – to people (adults and children) and all types of animals. Abuse of all needs to stop. I think that scared little calf in your cover photo would agree. Susan Radke Quesnel

Editor: There are a lot of good volunteers in Quesnel, one stands out above all the rest. That is my wife, Cheryl Sissons. Cheryl started volunteering at Riverview Elementary School in the mid 1980s when our children went to Riverview. In the 20052006 school year, Cheryl started volunteering again at Riverview when our granddaughter started kindergarten class. In 2006-2007 school year, she

started helping with the lunch program, Cheryl then started to run the program and is still in to this day. Our lunch program is the best program in District 28. In 2008-2009 school year, Cheryl got involved with the PAC at Riverview. She took on all the correspondence, all the notices, all the updates for the school news letter. She keeps track of all the fundraising. Wes Sissons Quesnel

A fond farewell for five blessed years in Quesnel

D

on’t be dismayed by good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends. - Richard Bach As we prepare to leave Quesnel, we are finding it very difficult to say farewell to people who have meant so much to us over the past five years. But good-byes do not have to be the end; they are merely a pause in a relationship. As a Christian I believe Jesus Christ when he said, In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. - John 14:2-3. There is the hope and the joy, for those who are united in

Tell us what’s on your mind.”

After these five years it feels a little like that, not because we are being wisked away at a moment’s notice, but because we have called Quesnel home and have made many lasting relationships, met many remarkable people and have been fused into the lives we have been touched by. Could anyone explain the emotion in detail, or find the right words to articulate not only a moment in the Caribou, but half a decade of building, nurturing, loving and fellowshipping with people that are as real as the surroundings they live in. And how about searching for, and finding, expressions that could capture the very, very great highs and the very deep black depths of some of the lows. No matter what line a person searching for could come up with, we would always think we would have said the wrong thing.

Building the Pacific Great Eastern Railway: an anniversary celebration with Quesnel Museum

J

oin the Quesnel and District Museum and Archives in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway and the 60th anniversary of its completion to Prince George. The P.G.E. Railway was incorporated in February 1912 to build a line from Vancouver to connect with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway at Prince George. By 1921 the line had reached Quesnel and, finally, in November of 1952 the line reached Prince George. On Friday, June 15, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, railway historian Barrie Sanford will give an illustrated talk on “The Phantom Railway,” the construction of the original P.G.E. line north from Quesnel. It was built in 1921, but the rails were torn up after two attempts to construct a bridge over the Cottonwood River failed. On Saturday, June 16 the museum invites you to walk “The Phantom Railway.” Come to the Quesnel Railway Station at 1 p.m. for the unveiling of a Heritage Plaque to honour the anniversaries of the P.G.E. Railway. After the presentation, drive in your own vehicle, or carpool, to Ten Mile Lake Provincial Park (named for its location at the ten mile post north of Quesnel on the original railway line.) Sanford will lead an easy walk along the remains of the railway grade and share his knowledge of the construction of the route.

He promises to bring a few artifacts which he discovered when he first mapped the old railway line in the 1980s. For those prepared for a more vigorous walk, he will drive to a second staging point and hike more of the rail bed, accessed through the fields. Sanford is among B.C.’s most prolific and respected railway historians. He has an engineering degree from UBC and lived in Quesnel for many years. He will share his lifelong passion for railroads during this special weekend of activities designed to commemorate the significant role the Pacific Great Eastern Railway has played in the development of Quesnel and to celebrate the engineering feats of the past century. There is no charge to participate in the events. Donations to offset program costs are much appreciated and a “Hat” will be passed at the end of the tour. Participants are responsible for their own transportation between venues, although some carpooling may be coordinated in advance through the museum. Vehicles can be left at the Quesnel Museum, which is directly across Highway 97 from the Quesnel railway station, for those that plan to carpool. For information or to register your interest in participating contact the Quesnel Museum, 250-992-9580 or e-mail museum manager Elizabeth Hunter at ehunter@quesnel.ca.

The private presentation ceremony took place at Montreal’s Beaconsfield Golf Club in the presence of the recipients and their guests. Germain has become a part of the fabric of Quesnel. Through Breakfast Clubs of Canada, an organization started by Germain in an effort to feed hungry school children, a majority of the schools in Quesnel now feed children every school morning. Breakfast Clubs of Canada is committed to its mission of ensuring all Canadian children have an equal chance to start their school day with a nutritious breakfast in an environment that promotes self-esteem. Danielle Robert has mixed feelings as she prepares to leave France Danielle Robert is a Rotary Exchange student in France. This is part two of a two-part submission. fter Brussels, we were again on vacation and my Canadian companion came to visit me for two weeks. After a week of discovering the villages around my host family’s home, we took off to the city of Saint Nazaire on the coast and spent the second week in museums, exploring the town by bicycle and cooking French–Canadian meat pie for our hosts. We took a one-day boat cruise in the Morbihan Gulf, and did a day-trip to Nantes, the capital of the Loire-Atlantic. Having saved up extravagant amounts of money for the visit, we enjoyed restaurant dining twice–a–day the entire week, and my visitor fell in love with French bakeries and more specifically, croissants. It was a wonderful vacation, definitely one for the memory books. Returning to school after our adventures, I changed families (only three suitcases!), fell ill and faced another Bac Blanc, all in one week. I immediately fell in love with my new family and new location, tucked away in La Roche Bernard, a half hour from the Morbihan Gulf. My family here spends lots of time together and my two sisters are very sweet. I adore my little sister, who is subjected to French braids and twists from me daily now. On a darker note, a doctor’s

Danielle Robert, right, enjoyed the Medieval Festival Contributed photo in France. visit told me I had acquired a kidney infection and put my on strong antibiotics. I was relieved to discover that, despite all the horror stories I have heard about travel insurance, mine was quite effective. Besides two weeks in March, spring has been rainy and windswept. Summer seems to be creeping in now in the second half of May (you can tell because everyone at school is bright red after the weekend) and it is greeted with joy. The medieval town of Guérande held their annual medieval festival this month and I participated at the event with my Rotary Club. We set up a tavern that specialized in seafood and I learned that I am quite talented as a waitress. Customers were rather pleased to be served by a smiling Canadian with a funny accent. The weekend itself was characterized by thousands

of people dressed in medieval garb, a medieval market with an impressive array of clothes, leather shoes and artisan jewelry, equestrian shows, a parade and food and games for all ages; a unique experience for someone from a country as young as Canada. At present, I have but eight weeks left in this beautiful country and as my exchange year is soon coming to an end, I am making great efforts to turn my mind to the near future. I do not expect my re-integration year to be an easy one. It’s amazing how much relationships can change over the course of a year. Even though I was in

host families, being separated from my real parents made me grow up more than I could have imagined possible. It’s a little strange to think about going back to high school next year to complete Grade 12. I know that university and scholarship applications are on the horizon and having not done certain subjects like math all year, the need to study is pressing. I am planning on attending Simon Fraser University in 2014, for a double major in French and political sciences, so next year will be a competition to have the best marks possible. My goals have changed a good deal during my exchange. I arrived wanting to be a language teacher; now, I am looking forward to working in international relations. My parents believe that I could finish up in an embassy. We’ll see how that goes. As much as I am looking forward to coming home and rejoining my family and friends, a little part of my heart breaks every time I think about leaving. After nine months here, France has become a part of who I am almost as much as my homeland. My only regret is not having created

Rotary to thank for this amazing experience. I’ve learned so much about myself and the world this year and that’s a gift no one can take away from me. I love this country and I loved the year spent here. Thankfully, it’s not quite over yet. I still

have two weeks of school, and then six weeks of summer holidays to benefit from. I will be changing families for my last time in mid June. Alas, I still have to figure out how to squish everything into only two suitcases.

Courtney McLaughlin, 17, Logan Godsoe, 9, and Hannah Trimble, 7, of Quesnel, are back from The War Amps annual BC Child Amputee (CHAMP) Seminar in Victoria. Courtney was born a left hand amputee, Logan a partial right hand amputee, and Hannah a left arm amputee. They attended the three-day seminar, which covered all aspects of growing up as an amputee, including: the latest developments in artificial limbs; parenting an amputee child; dealing with teasing and bullying; and learning the importance of staying active. As a Junior Counsellor, Courtney “gave back” by answering questions and offering advice to young Champs; a role that embodies The War Amps philosophy of “amputees helping amputees.” She also showed her guitar device during the Amputees in Action Session. Both Logan and Courtney have a special interest in The War Amps Operation Legacy and were presented with CHAMP Ambassador Certificates for together donating War Amps documentaries to their local library. Hannah was also presented with a CHAMP Ambassador Certificate for conducting a PLAYSAFE presentation for her Sparks group and two Amputation Awareness presentations for her classmates. At the seminar, she also tackled a challenge for arm amputees – learning to tie her shoes! CHAMP is funded solely through public support of The War Amps Key Tag and Address Label Service. The Quesnel Invitational was a great success with two teams from Prince George and three from Quesnel competing in the peewee division. The first place final on Sunday pitted K2 Courier Services at 4-0 against C&C, going head to head for seven innings of hard fought baseball. "In 30 years I have coached, I have never seen two better pitching performances, both worthy of MVP," coach of K2, Pat Jones said. The game had it all, great pitching, great defense and timely hitting. Although K2 took the gold, there were no losers in that game, just great competitors.

In the Quesnel Golf Club 6-6-6 tournament on the last weekend of May, Ken Boichat and Dave Pansar came away with the trophy with a net score of 60.7. James Pederson and Don Ward followed in second, with the team of Pete Renyard and Rod Albers rounding out the top three. Ron Graham took the KP win on hole 3. For hole 7 Veanna Kimmie was closest to the pin for the women, while Ted J. and Gil D. shared the honours on the men's side. Sharon took the KP for women on hole 14. James Pederson took it for the men. On hole 16, Glenda Graham and Warren Hepner took closest to the pin for women and men respectively.

The Design Flooring/West Central Pipe peewee rep girls’ softball team travelled to Maple Ridge on the May 19-20 weekend for their first tournament. The girls played extremely well for their first games together as a team. Carli Gibbs was a standout on the mound, as was Kassidy Flanagan. Ashlee Paterson was stellar at second base, as was Janelle Izzard at shortstop. The squad finished the round robin at two wins and one loss taking third in the tournament.

Too young to drive, but ready to race JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Most 15-year-old boys dream of getting their driver's license and all the shenanigans that supposedly go along with driving. But James Spooner, a 15-year-old, is a little bit quicker, both in learning how to drive and driving. In the QARA's first race of the year on the oval, rookie James (Grey Ghost Jr.) Spooner won his dash in his grey 1990 Ford Tempo. "My first time driving was a couple weeks ago when I first started driving my car around the track," said Spooner. For his first race, Spooner did pretty well, leading for much of the C Dash he won. Spooner, who drives a grey, #74 car, is following in the footsteps of his dad, the original Grey Ghost, said Kathy Spooner, mother of James

st

and secretary for the QARA. "My husband hasn't been on the track for 10 years and now our son is the Grey Ghost," said Kathy. Spooner wasn't the only one without a license in the Mr. Mikes Mini Stock, the QARA's entry level. The 3 races, or dashes as they’re known, included rookies #4 Masyn Schwemler (#4) at 14, 15-yearold Luke Zacharias (#57), 14-year-old Kaitlyn Lefebvre (#55) and Hannah Braman (#19) at 17. The Quesnel Iron Street Stocks also had two rookies racing on Saturday. Number 6, Matt Byrd (who has raced Crash to Pass, but not regular racing) and #73 Victoria Lefebvre both made their debut. The fast time for the Iron Street Stocks was taken by Henry Peterson in his #11 car. Mike Lefevbre won the 'A' dash in #55 while Chris

Conquering cancer 200 kms at a time JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

A

trip across the border, from Vancouver to Seattle, is little more than a day trip for the lines of cars waiting at the border crossing, but, for the cyclists on the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, it will be a two day adventure. Local cyclist Brad Bryant will be one of those, propelling themselves over 200 km in an effort to raise money. "For me, it's a double win," Bryant said. "Because not only are we raising funds, but I'm looking forward to the physical challenge." Cancer has affected most people in North America and it was those brushes with the diseases that propelled him to go for it. "I've lost two close friends to cancer and

my mom had two battles with it," Bryant said. "The first time she lost a lung and we thought she was better. The second time the doctor's found it in six or seven different spots." Urged on by the experience of supporting his mother through those hard times and the difficulties that expensive drugs and unaffordable alternative treatments caused, Bryant was ready and willing to join in on the fight against cancer when the chance came up. He and five other co-workers from Arrow Transportation, decided to make a team so they could ride together and encourage each other. The Ride requires a minimum pledge of $2,500, which can be supplied by the rider or through pledges from the community, to participate in the ride. The Arrow team, however,

“I’ve lost two close friends to cancer and my mom had two battles with it,” Brad Bryant, local cyclist

has set their sights higher. Each team member set the bar up to $3,200 when the drive for pledges began. This proved to be too low for many of the team members, and especially for Bryant. Instead of hitting his goal and getting complacent, Bryant raised the bar each time he found he succeeded. After making, and raising, the goal a couple times, Bryant is now closing in on his new, $5,000 goal. As of publishing, the team as a whole have collected $30,490 to give to the cause. And while having a team is great for spurring him on to greater heights of funding,

Bryant’s team, being that they're all from the Kamloops arm of Arrow, are not such great riding partners. "I ride alone up here," Bryant said. He takes those lonely rides every second morning, riding just over an hour through the soft, morning light. And, with longer rides under his belt like his recent ride to Macallister, Bryant is confident of the ability of his legs to stand up to the two days of 100 km rides. Other parts, however, he's not so sure about. "I'm fairly fit and athletic so I think I'll be fine as long as my butt doesn't get sore," Bryant said with a laugh. The Ride to Conquer Cancer offers two routes from Vancouver to Seattle: the shorter 'Classic' route; and a new, longer 'Challenge' route that winds over hill and dale for nearly 200 miles, half agian

the 200 km the 'Classic' runs. The team, however, is new to the ride and so will be taking the shorter route to make sure they are as fit as they think they are. Never having done this before, Bryant knows there is an element of the unknown in the ride. "Until you actually go through, it you don't know how draining it will be," Bryant said. After the 'easing in' of this year's 200 km ride, Bryant sees the team continuing the fight against cancer next year, but on the larger ride. "I can almost guarantee we'll all be on the team next year and take the more challenging course," he said. If you want to help Bryant surpass another goal, he can be reached at the local branch of Arrow Transportation, 250992-8103.
