Historic Cranbrook house wins BC Hydro’s Energy Fix contest Submitted
PHOTO SUBMITTED
The historic Colonel Baker House won the lighting make-over partly because of sustainable practices the owners already employ.
Cranbrook’s Colonel Baker House of¿ce building has won a free Power Smart energy-ef¿cient lighting makeover. The of¿ce building was voted by British Columbians as the winner of the Power Smart Energy Fix Contest in the Cranbrook and Kimberly area. BC Hydro’s Energy Fix Contest ran in April. BC Hydro judged entrants based on how the business will ben-
eÂżt from the makeover; goals or motivations to be more energy efÂżcient; and energyefÂżcient or sustainable practices the business already employs. A shortlist of Âżnalists were chosen from each region and the winners were determined by an online vote announced at the end of May. Built in 1887, the Colonel Baker House is the oldest building in Cranbrook. The Colonel Baker House said they wanted an energy
efÂżcient lighting makeover because they recently learned most of their light Âżxtures were inefÂżcient through a LiveSmart assessment. Light Âżxtures in the building date back to 1983. The local facility strives to be more environmentally sustainable and already
practices energy ef¿cient behaviours with photosensor exterior lighting, ground Àoor lighting ¿xtures being replaced and with programmable thermostats already installed. For many small businesses, lighting is one of the easiest energyef¿cient upgrades that
can be made. Depending upon the business, lighting can account for up to 40% of total electricity used in a commercial building.

GOLD CREEK RELOCATION AND MT. BAKER REBUILD PROJECT
SITE ACTIVITY COMMENCEMENT BC Hydro will be making system improvements and a power line relocation in the Gold Creek Road and Mt. Baker area, beginning in the middle of June 2012 with work expected to continue until November 2012. The project includes vegetation work, followed by construction activities involving the use of heavy equipment, resulting in higher than normal traffic activity. The line relocation and system upgrade will improve reliability and support telecommunication customers with equipment located on Mt. Baker. BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience that the construction activity may cause, and will complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible.

Time to get their act together La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley
BC winery owners are quick--and justi¿ably so, in my opinion—to criticize the provincial government for its arduous regulation of their industry and the snail’s pace at which laws change to keep up with the times. An issue has come forward recently, though, that says that in some ways they are their own worst enemies. Christine Coletta, one of the owners of Okanagan Crush Pad, raised concerns about the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) program last week. The program is designed to ensure buyers that they are getting only quality wines when they see the logo on the bottle. It has rules for production and a tasting panel is the arbiter that determines whether a wine can bear the VQA lettering. Okaganan Crush Pad is an innovator, providing a complete range of wine-making and marketing services to small producers, and it also produces wines under its own name and those of its team of owners. It has recently made a bit of a splash in the market by putting some of its wines into boxes, three-litre packages with plastic liners. Experimentation with wine packaging seems to have gained traction with consumer acceptance of screwtop wine bottles—we’ve long had “box wines” but they were, well, “box wines” and not premium product. But quality and tradition, the wine market seems to have concluded, are not necessarily one and the same
thing. If Crush Pad boxes have been a hit with consumers, the same can’t be said for the BC Wine Institute (BCWI), which oversees the VQA program. The boxed wines not only can’t get VQA designation, they can’t even get to the testing stage because the BCWI can’t, or won’t, ¿gure out how to ¿t the boxes into the VQA evaluation process. Wines submitted for testing must be contained in traditional 750ml bottles and apparently boxes are just too different for the BCWI to handle. In a blog on the Okanagan Crush Pad site, Coletta points out that the tasting panel process is at best questionable, even when only bottles are tested. In 2011, she points out, only 41 out of 1,384 wines were rejected by the panel, which has been changed over the years to exclude winemakers as tasters. Respected BC winemaker Tom di Bello weighed in with his own views by responding to Coletta’s blog. He has concerns about the lasting capability of wine in bags, but thinks they are ¿ne for people who only want a glass or two of wine at a time because the bladder prevents air from getting at the contents and spoiling it. “This is a good thing, isn’t it, so why aren’t we able to grow with the times?” he asks. Di Bello suggests he is no big fan of the VQA testing panel process. For each wine submitted, the winery receives the testing panel results, so it can see what the panel’s response was even if the wine has been approved to be sold with
the VQA designation. Some of his wines that were identi¿ed as having Àaws went off to become some of his most successful award winners, he said. “In addition to that,” he writes, “most of my own wines tasted by the panel, had the Àaws of oxidation and reduction both checked on the same wine for ¿ves years running. These are opposite Àaws and you can’t have both. The other ¿ve years I had the Àaws of Àat (not enough acidity) and too much acidity checked on the same wines. Most of the best wines I’ve made, which went on to the most international and national acclaim had the most bad comments, with only a couple of exceptions. Mostly when I read the comments back from the VQA I have a good laugh.” Di Bello says he is aware of wines that were rejected for Brettanomyces (a form of yeast that can create unpleasant tastes in wine if it is present at suf¿cient levels), but when submitted for independent lab testing were found to be “Brett”-free. As I read through the comments about VQA it occurred to me that I don’t even look for the VQA letters on a bottle any more, and haven’t for a long time. I rely on the recommendations of trusted friends and wine sellers, on my experiences at the winery and on my own sense of adventure. Di Bello points out that there are countries that simply let the market decide what a good wine is and I think I tend to agree with him that it’s not such a bad idea.

Biological Resistance
The Key City Old Timers Hockey League Charity Golf Tournament raised $5000 for the Cranbrook Hospice Society
Pictured left to right: Pete Stenfano (Falkins Insurance), Bernie Kennedy (KCOHL tournament organizer), Paul Whittingham (Cranbrook Golf Club), Don Davidson (President, Cranbrook Hospice Society), Brayden Snopek (Players Bench), Kevin Doll (KCOHL/Cranbrook Hospice Society) and Wayne Walmsley (KCOHL tournament organizer)
Biological resistance is a term I use to describe the common scenario where the body becomes resistant to the influence of normal biological compounds. A common example is type II diabetes where the cell is unable to efficiently use insulin: we call this insulin resistance. Sadly, this situation is not limited to type II diabetes. Biological resistance is at play in virtually every health condition. Last week I saw a patient who had been constipated for years. Without laxatives, his bowels moved once every 10-12 days. During our visit I tested him and found he had a biological resistance to magnesium. Three days after normalizing his body’s response to magnesium his bowels started moving three times a day. Magnesium is crucial for the smooth muscles of the bowel to be able to contract and move the stool (this is called peristalsis). This type of resistance is not an allergy. If we developed an allergy to normal biological com-

pounds we would die very quickly from a severe autoimmune reaction. What I am describing is a situation where the body becomes somewhat intolerant to normal chemistry. The ramifications of biological intolerance are huge. What if, for example, your thyroid is somewhat resistant to the influence of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)? This would result in your thyroid not producing enough thyroid hormone and you might feel tired. One option would be to supplement with thyroid hormone. Another option would be to normalize your body’s response to TSH so that your thyroid would be able to respond appropriately to TSH. How about a situation where a woman’s body becomes resistant to the influence of estrogen or progesterone? Hot flashes, memory loss, mood swings…you get the picture. These are just a few examples of the consequences of biological intolerance and in the coming weeks I will write more on this topic.

YOU MAY BE SURPRISED AT HOW CANADA REGARDS THIS BABY. • Did you know Canadian law says a child is not a human being before the moment of complete birth? • A child has no human rights until its entire body has emerged from its mother’s body. • Stephen Woodworth has tabled Motion 312 in parliament that, if passed, would commission a special committee to take a second look at this 400 year old law and decide when we become human. Ways to get involved and be a voice: 1. Sign a Petition: www.beavoice.ca 2. Have each family member write an e-mail (include home address) supporting Motion 312 and send it to your Member of Parliament and Stephen Harper. David Wilks: david.wilks@parl.gc.ca Stephen Harper: pm@pm.gc.ca Go to http://www.stephenwoodworth.ca for more information.

Corvette mixes style and substance Refreshed but still funky, the 2012 Kia Soul is peppy, efficient and roomy
PHOTO SUBMITTED
With engines that range from fast to outrageous, the 2012 Corvette is a driver’s choice. Overall: Celebrations for General Motors’ 100th anniversary extend to a special-edition Corvette with blacked-out everything and Louis Chevrolet’s face in three spots; minor detail changes to improve the aging interior; still a performance rocket and a relative bargain. Drivetrain: The base 430-horsepower engine has plenty of power for anyone, but then there’s the 505-horsepower Z06 and the ZR1’s 638-horsepower 6.2-litre supercharged V8 . . . thankfully with launch control. While we know an all-new Corvette should be seeing the light of day soon, Chevrolet continues to slowly evolve its existing offerings and add a special edition or two. For the 2012 model year, all Corvettes get new, more supportive seats with optional micro-¿bre inserts, new steering wheel with modelspeci¿c badges and an optional all-black Centennial
Edition appearance package to celebrate Chevrolet’s 100th birthday. There are still four levels of ‘Vette: the 430-horsepower base model; the wide-body, big-wheelsand-big-brakes Grand Sport; the 505-horsepower Z06 with its unique 7.0-litre V8; and the outrageous 638-horsepower ZR1. While the megabuck ZR1 will hit 320 km-h and needs a healthy level of skill and maturity to keep it pointed straight, every model will surely raise the hairs on your neck. Giant disc-brake rotors are now optional on base models, which should ensure the car’s velocity can be arrested, like, right now, when called upon. A six-speed manual remains the basic transmission for all models, while a six-speed automatic with steering-wheelmounted buttons is optional on ‘Vettes that come with the 430-horsepower engine, including the Grand Sport model that replaced the Z51 handling/braking package.
The GS’s performance hardware heightens the Corvette driving experience with wider front and rear fenders to house bigger wheels and tires. It gets all kinds of gofast parts and speci¿c styling cues and is available with magnetic shock absorbers. The Z06 should be considered the purist’s Corvette as it was designed as an extension of the Corvette sports-car racing program, which explains its unique-to-the-model 7.0-litre V8. In fact, if you pop for the limited-edition Carbon Z06 model, you’re in for one mean-looking street ¿ghter. The 100th-anniversary package can be applied to most Corvette models and includes black paint and black model-speci¿c wheels, special interior bits with contrasting stitching and Louis Chevrolet’s face on the steering-wheel center, the outside roof pillar and on the wheel centers.

If you are looking for a vehicle that sips gas, has the pep to get you just about anywhere and has room for all your family, the 2012 Kia Soul is the vehicle for you. Overall: The vehicle most responsible for the words “That’s a Kia?” now gets a thorough mid-cycle update for 2012. Drivetrain: All-new base 1.6-litre four-cylinder shared with the Rio, while carryover 2.0-litre gets a big power bump; Six-speed transmissions replace ¿ve-speed manual and four-speed automatics for improved drivability and fuel ef¿ciency. The shocking sub-compact Soul was the ¿rst evidence that Kia was serious about sexy design. The Soul’s nearvertical walls and extra-wide liftgate maximize interior space while looking rather funky. For the 2012 model year, the Soul is getting a full refresh both inside and out. New headlamps and LED taillights are the jewelry on top of a revised hood, front and rear fascias, fog lights
and wheel designs for all three trim levels. Redesigned side mirrors now have integrated turn signals. The entry-level 1.6-litre four-cylinder is taken from the all-new Rio sedan and produces 135 horsepower (up from 122), while the optional 2.0-litre has been re-tuned to deliver 160 horsepower (up from 142). As with all other Kias, the Soul gets six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions at all trim levels. All these changes have improved fuel economy too, now rated 7.0 l/100 km in the city and 5.4 on the highway (Previously 7.7/6.3) for the 1.6. Changes to the interior are led by a new center stack and gear surround, a telescoping steering wheel, automatic headlamps, and heated front seats with new cloth covers. Otherwise, the Soul is still cleverly packaged
for maximum customization and a wide range of price points. The base model, one of a total of seven trim levels includes a trip computer and second-row headrest adjuster, along with tilt steering, power windows, locks and mirrors, rear wiper/washer and a sound system that accommodates external audio players. Adding the automatic transmission to your $18,250 purchase (including destination charges) puts air conditioning controls at your ¿ngertips. Atop the Soul’s lineup pyramid, the 4U Luxury edition comes with leather-covered seats, climate control, a navigation system and keyless entry with pushbutton start.

All types of advertising will be used to ensure the visibility of your home, including displaying it in real estate of¿ces and in the print media and on the Internet.
Pubs and restaurants face ¿nes if they serve under-aged customers, and now servers can also be issued tickets. By Tom Fletcher New B.C. liquor regulations include a $575 ¿ne for adults who buy alcohol for under-aged drinkers, or serve them in restaurants and pubs. The ¿nes apply to serving staff who fail to check identi¿cation, in addition to penalties already in place for licensed establishments that serve under-aged drinkers. Those penalties range from ¿nes of $7,500 to $10,000 or a licence suspension of 10
to 15 days. Parents and guardians who provide booze to their under-19 children are exempt from the tickets. “These changes give police and liquor inspectors another tool to make it harder for minors to get alcohol,” said Rich Coleman, minister responsible for liquor and gambling policy. The new tickets are part of an effort by the B.C. government to streamline the court system, after imposing new
administrative penalties for impaired driving. For supplying alcohol to minors, police previously handed out court appearance notices. The new tickets can still be disputed in court, but the onus is on the person ticketed to dispute or pay it. B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association president Ian Tostenson said the organization supports the new penalties.

THIELEN, Jerome Albert 1928 - 2012 Surrounded by the love and support of his family, Jerome Albert Thielen, left this life in the early morning hours of Friday, June 1, 2012 at the age of 83 years. Jerome leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Verna, and five children; Sheila (Shan) Fitzpatrick, Brian (Dari) Thielen, Gerry (Noreen) Thielen, Gwenn (Saied) Kiaresh and Scott (Angie) Thielen. Also left to mourn his passing are his grandchildren, Andrea, Casey, Dallas Fitzpatrick, Mitch, Brett, Chase, Jessica Thielen, Jordan, Emily Thielen, Daniel Kiaresh, Austin and Lauren Thielen as well as 11 great grandchildren. The siblings surviving Jerome are his brother, Herbert Thielen and sister, Evelyn Lodermeier. Jerome was predeceased by his dear son, Michael in 1963 as well as one sister, Adeline Dixson, (1994) one brother Edmund Thielen (1978) and his great grandson Jaxson Rousselle. Jerome was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on July 26, 1928, the fourth of five children born to Peter and Rose Thielen. He was raised on the family farm east of Milk River, later attending St. Theresa’s Boarding Academy in Medicine Hat Alberta at the same time as Bishop Cooney. These high school years gave him the opportunity to compete in a variety of sports which he loved. After returning home Jerome met Verna Klatt of Foremost, Alberta and they were married in Milk River on June 12, 1951. Their union was blessed with six children. The first ten years of their marriage were spent farming in the Milk River district. In 1961, with a family of four, Jerome and Verna moved to Grasmere, BC to work a cattle ranch. These years were filled with hard work, great friends and most of all the music he played and shared with the South Country people. After 10 years working the ranch, they made the move to Creston, BC to operate the Alberta Motel and ran this business for 20 years. In 1991, with retirement and rest in mind, they made the move to Cranbrook. Jerome loved sports and was a faithful Kootenay Ice season ticket holder since the team came to town. Baseball and curling were some of his favourites as well. He loved to walk and was faithful to his morning walks each day. He made many friends on these excursions. He was a man who could do anything he set his mind to - a “can do” kind of guy. A special joy to all that were around him was Jerome’s musical talent. He was a self-taught musician who could play a wide variety of instruments and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Jerome was a hard worker and never shied away from any job. From building homes to changing a diaper - he could and would do it. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and they loved him dearly. Jerome was truly a man who was the “salt of the earth”. In his last days, he made a very valiant effort to stay with us and his family was there to support him to the end. The family would like to thank Dr. Dawson and the staff of the East Kootenay and Kelowna Regional Hospitals for their attentive care over the past five months. Special thanks to Dad’s angel Cindy, for always being there to brighten his days and nights. A Memorial Service to commemorate Jerome’s life was held at Christ the Servant Catholic Church on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 1:00 pm. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Jerome’s memory to East Kootenay Foundation for Health for the Physiotherapy Department, EKRH (www. ekfh.ca or by mail: EKFH, 13, 24th Ave. N, Cranbrook, B.C. V1C 3H9) Condolences may be left for the family at www. markmemorial.com. Mark Memorial Funeral Services in care of arrangements (250) 426-4864

StarďŹ eld touching down in Cranbrook during Sam Steele Days
Canadian rock worship band, StarÂżeld, has spent the last 12 years partnering with churches and ministries leading students and congregations in passionate and energetic worship. They released their self-titled major label debut in 2004, followed by “Beauty in the Brokenâ€? in 2006, “I Will Goâ€? in 2008, “The Saving Oneâ€? in 2010 and most recently “The Kingdomâ€? in 2012. StarÂżeld penned songs like “Filled With Your Gloryâ€?, “Reign In Usâ€?, and “The Saving Oneâ€? are sung in church services every weekend all over the world.
StarÂżeld is the most-awarded and top-selling Christian band in Canada with numerous Juno award nominations, GMA Covenant awards and a Prairie Music award. They are expanding that following in the US, United Kingdom, and Europe with yearly concert tours and conference appearances. Ministry partnerships with the Billy Graham Association, Dare2Share, and Youth Specialties have helped StarÂżeld grow beyond the conÂżnes of the music industry and more directly into partnerships with the local
Church. This year StarÂżeld has partnered with World Vision and are excited to share their mission’s experience with all in attendance. StarÂżeld will be touching down for one show only in Cranbrook during Sam Steele days on Sunday June 17th at the Cranbrook Alliance Church. The concert starts at 6:00 p.m. with opening act “The Incandescentâ€? from Spokane Washington. Tickets can be purchased at Cranbrook Alliance Church or www.cranbrookalliancechurch. com or at The Nails Christian Bookstore.
