PROMO’S GRAD PRESENT By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Promo got an early graduation present — local Mounties found his stolen bike. The mountain bike, put together from donated parts and with volunteer labour from Full Boar Bike Shop, is vital to Pramod Thapa — who everyone refers to as Promo — because the competitive downhill skier uses it in the off-season to train. His goal is to take part in the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia, or the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Thapa, who has cerebral palsy, gradu-
ated from Sa-Hali secondary on Thursday, June 7. The day before, police phoned his trainer, Jim Knowles, to let him know they had found a bike they thought was Thapa’s. RCMP Const. Grant Learned said the bike was located while officers were dealing with an unrelated matter. Learned said the theft had not been reported, but officers recognized the bike from a story in KTW about the theft. Knowles did not report the theft because other bikers had told him the odds of recovering it were slim. Friends and supporters of Thapa’s dream

donated parts to create it and Full Boar donated the frame made by British mountain-bike company Orange. That helped with identifying it because the frame is white with a union jack painted on it. At the time of the theft, Knowles estimated it would cost about $4,000 to replace the bike. Since the early May theft, Thapa has been using a road bike to train for the Gran Fondo Highway Pass race in Alberta on July 7. He first tackled the gruelling race last year, a competition that spans 147 kilometres and includes a 7,000-foot climb.

They might be teenagers, and they might be criminals, but they appear to have good taste in wine. Just after midnight on Monday, June 11, Kamloops Mounties received a report of a break-in at Bruno’s Cold Beer and Wine store in the 100-block of Tranquille Road in North Kamloops. By the time police arrived, the culprits were gone. Investigators looked at surveillance footage and determined the two teenage crooks had broken a window to gain access to the store, then swiped a $60 bottle of wine before fleeing on foot. Patrols failed to turn up any suspects, but Mounties got lucky a few hours later. Just after 3 a.m., emergency crews were called to a vehicle fire at Clapperton Road and Mulberry Avenue in North Kamloops. Someone had set ablaze an abandoned 1960s car. An officer on scene spotted a teenager running away and caught up with him. He denied having anything to do with the fire but, after police
found the 17-year-old’s driver’s licence on the ground next to the burned-out car, he was taken to jail. Also arrested was a 16-year-old girl found passed out in the area. Police say they found liquor bottles in the area. The bottles had been stolen earlier from the Tranquille Road liquor store. Both suspects were expected to be released after sobering up, with possible charges pending. Police are looking into any possible connections between the pair and last week’s fire and vandalism at the former George Hilliard elementary. Investigators are looking into a suspicious blaze in Brocklehurst on Friday, June 8. Just before 4:30 a.m., a resident in the area of the building, in the 900-block of Holt Street, called 911 to report a fire on top of the building. Kamloops Fire Rescue arrived and snuffed out the blaze, which was burning on the school’s roof, above a utility room. KFR Insp. Kevin Hall said it looks like the fire was set on purpose. “It’s definitely suspicious,” he said. “And, there were some other acts of vandalism perpetrated at the school last night.”

Trading in the unknown for a firm future By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
Cody Braun was, admittedly, a little bit lost. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do,” the 19-year-old told KTW. “Maybe just try to find whatever I could do to live.” Braun was then presented with an opportunity to learn a trade. In January, he started a program sponsored by the Southern Interior Construction Association (SICA), aimed at introducing disadvantaged young people to the construction industry. Fast-forward six months and Braun is well on his way to a career as an electrician. “It brightens my future for sure,” he said, noting he has received conditional acceptance from the union representing electricians and employment assurances as his apprenticeship progresses. “I’d never even thought about it [a career in the trades] before.” That’s the goal of the program, according to SICA educational coordinator Kym Behrns. “It’s a pre-apprenticeship program,” he said. “Once they complete this, they can either continue with
Thompson Rivers University or go into the trades and get employment with one of the contractors and get their apprenticeship that way.” TRU provided space for the SICA program to operate and Home Hardware donated building supplies for the 14 students to use in their studies.
In two sessions of seven future tradespeople each — one lasting 12 weeks, the other 19 weeks — students built sheds fitted with electrical panels. “It was basically people who are unemployed or underemployed and are looking for the basic skills to get them started down the path of a
career,” said Lindsay Langill, the dean of TRU’s Trades and Technology School. “It’s always important for TRU to be involved because we’re the training provider for this region. “It’s our job to reach out to the community and give people the skills they need to find a career they’re
happy with.” And, of course, TRU stands to gain future trades students. “It’s opportunities like this that let them come in for a short time and exposes them to the trades,” Langill said. “Now, we can set them up in those types of programs and they’re on a path to success.” That’s Braun’s plan
— to begin his apprenticeship studies at TRU in January. And, Behrns said, another student has already found work as an apprentice in Alberta. As for the future of the SICA program, it also appears bright. Behrns said he hopes to make it an annual course.
Cody Braun, 19, recently completed a Southern Interior Construction Association program for disadvantaged youths. He hopes to become an electrician. Andrea Klassen/KTW

Overpass re-opening will wait By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
North Shore commuters looking forward to using the Tranquille Overpass will have to wait a few more days. While the re-opening of the pass — now closed for more than a month — was set for today (June 12), it now
appears the span will be closed until Thursday. While Kamloops streets manager Jim McNeely was still waiting for information from Retro Specialty Contractors as of KTW press deadline on Monday, June 11, he said crews had yet to pour all of the concrete required for the repair.
The concrete needs at least 24 hours to cure and could take up to two days to reach the strength needed to bear the weight of traffic, leading McNeely to guess it might be ready to open on Thursday. “Our original intent was to have it open on Friday (June 15) for this
coming weekend’s traffic, and we went with the optimistic advice from the contractor, saying he’d be able to get it done,” said McNeely, who added the Surreybased firm has run into some equipment trouble and logistical problems during the repair. “Unfortunately, you give a good word like
that and it’s turned bad on us in this particular case.” The city shut down the overpass May 8 after a truck hauling an excavator cracked the concrete on the underside of the span. Repair costs are just over $37,000, but the city may be recompensed by ICBC.

Vehicle vandals target downtown Kamloops core Kamloops Mounties are looking into a rash of mischief over the weekend, in which five vehicles parked on downtown streets had their windshields stomped in. The incidents took place late overnight on Saturday, June 9, and into the following morning. Police believe the culprit likely hopped onto the hoods of the vehicles and jumped on the windshields until they broke. All of the damage was done in the area between First and Fourth avenues and Victoria and St. Paul streets. Anyone with information can call police

Chaos in Westsyde keeps police busy Police were kept busy on Friday, June 8, dealing with multiple mischief reports in Westsyde. Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said the complaints dealt with “swarms of drunk teenagers” roaming the neighbourhood, partying and causing damage. In one case, a 15-year-old girl —
lighter in the pocketbook after being ticketed for a hit-and-run last week. The 23-year-old student from Kuwait went to police on Thursday, June 7, and said he had been the driver in a collision the previous day. He told Mounties he was driving his 2005 Subaru Impreza at about 6 p.m. in downtown Kamloops when he struck an unoccupied parked vehicle. Because there was nobody else around, he said, he went home and asked friends what to do. He was given a ticket for failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
described by Learned as “highly intoxicated” — was arrested after wandering into a home in the 2400block of Partridge Drive. She was wearing no shoes and had cuts on her feet. Because the girl’s parents were in Alberta for the weekend, she was temporarily released into the care of the Ministry of Children and Families. Learned said several youths were arrested.

History will repeat itself New city director will again follow David Trawin By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
When current Kamloops CAO David Trawin left Terrace to become director of development and engineering services in the Tournament Capital, Marvin Kwiatkowski took over his old portfolio. This July, history is set to repeat itself. Kwiatkowski will become Kamloops’ newest director of development and engineering services on July 16, filling the position Trawin vacated to become CAO in May. “Kamloops has always sort of been on the back of my mind,” said Kwiatkowski, who now serves as the director of development services for the City of Terrace. “It was somewhere we said, ‘You know what? That’s somewhere we would potentially live one day.’” An engineer by training, Kwiatkowski has overseen many departments in the city of 11,000, from planning to bylaw enforcement and mapping. That, said Trawin, helped set Kwiatkowski apart in a field of 53 candidates from within and outside of the city, as did a very strong set of references from Terrace’s building community. “It was a very close race,” Trawin said, with the city focusing on
technical experience and the new director’s ability to connect with staff, city council and the wider public. Kwiatkowski said engagement is among his top priorities as well, making the city a good fit. “I believe in the team approach and working and building close connections with staff, with the union, with management, with council and with the community,” he said. Terrace Mayor David Pernarowski said Kwiatkowski was instrumental in keeping development going in the city as it faced a decade-long economic downturn. “Marvin was really able to work through a lot of difficult situations. He’s a great guy, very level-headed,” Pernarowski said. “He’s helped us a lot in being creative in finding both provincial and federal funding the city could work with.” Kwiatkowski said it’s an approach he expects to bring to Kamloops. “Stretching taxpayers’ dollars to the max and being financially prudent is very important to myself and I think bringing that into any organization is a plus,” he said. Recently, Terrace has been pushing to develop more industrial space, a project the mayor said Kwiatkowski has also led the way on.

In prison, it’s Miller time — again By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
Adrian Miller is back in jail. The 26-year-old Thompson Rivers University student-politician, who has attracted more attention for his recent crime spree than his roles on the school’s senate and board of governors, admitted last week to once again breaching his house-arrest sentence. In April, Miller was given 125 days of house arrest after pleading guilty to a long list of charges including theft, mischief, fraud and possession of stolen property. He breached the terms three weeks later, after he was found out and about when he was supposed to be at home. After admitting that breach, Miller was released from custody in late May. Last week, he was once again spotted in the community while his curfew was
in effect. Miller was arrested, applied for bail and was denied. He then admitted the breach and was sentenced to nine days in jail. When he gets out, Miller will continue to be bound by his house-arrest terms. Miller had been on probation stemming from a mischief conviction last spring in Prince George. In that instance, he trashed an apartment he was living in while in the process of being evicted. In Kamloops, he breached the conditions of that probation order a number of times. He also racked up new substantive charges, first in February when he stole jewelry and electronics from his landlords before pawning much of the loot for cash. Miller tried to pin the thefts on a fictitious burglar and was charged with mischief for reporting a false crime. In March, Miller was charged with fraud after returning for cash items he
hadn’t purchased at The Real Canadian Superstore in Sahali. Miller had been in custody for a month before pleading guilty and receiving his house arrest sentence. In addition to his elected positions at TRU, Miller unsuccessfully sought a seat on the Kamloops-Thompson school district’s board of education last fall. He also has an ongoing lawsuit against TRU, claiming the school has been negligent in its dealings with him as a student. Miller’s house-arrest sentence imposed in April will end in mid-August. Officials from TRU were not immediately available to comment on Miller’s standing as a student or the status of his positions on the university’s senate and board of governors. Miller was in jail on the day he was supposed to be sworn in as a board member, so he remains a member-elect. He has attended meetings as a university senator.

An accused murderer from Alberta has had his trial in Kamloops postponed. Mark Lindsay was scheduled to stand trial this week on allegations he stabbed his Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre cellmate twice last year during a game of Scrabble. In a brief hearing on Friday, June 8, lawyers agreed to attach Lindsay’s aggravatedassault trial to another aggravated-assault trial
set to take place in August. That charge stems from an alleged stabbing involving an undercover RCMP officer in Barriere last September. It is believed the 25-year-old was, at the time, the target of an RCMP Mr. Big undercover operation, in which accused criminals are befriended by police officers posing as gangsters. The alleged jailhouse stabbing took place at

Three Sorrento family members killed in crash By Tracy Hughes SALMON ARM OBSERVER
newsroom@saobserver.net
Three Sorrento residents were killed and two more remain in hospital after a head-on collision in Rosetown, Sask. on Sunday, June 10. Doug Janzen, 47, and his daughter Alli, 19, died at the scene of the collision, while daughter Cassidy, 13, was taken to hospital first in Rosetown and then to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, where she died from her injuries. The two other family members in the car remain in hospital. Patricia Janzen is in critical condition, while 16-year-old son Cody is injured, but expected to make a full recovery. RCMP say at approximately 12:20 p.m., a westbound car being driven by Doug attempted to pass a semi-truck and collided head-on with an eastbound SUV.
“There were heavy rains here Saturday and Sunday and it was raining quite hard at the time of the crash. It appears the spray off the semi was quite heavy and obscured the driver’s visibility, says Sgt. Ian Skinner of the Rosemont RCMP detachment. Skinner noted all five members of the Janzen family were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. “There were no ejections, but damage to their vehicle was extreme. Two occupants of the eastbound SUV, a 56-year-old man and 30-year-old man, also a father and son, from Plato, Saskatchewan, were also taken to hospital with unknown injuries. The 30-year-old is in critical condition, while the older man is expected to recover. Alli was attending school at Okanagan College, after graduating from Salmon Arm
secondary last year, while Cassidy attended Carlin elementary/middle school. The North OkanaganShuswap School District #83 crisis team has been dispatched to several schools to try to help students and staff cope with the tragic accident. Superintendent Dave Witt said the crisis team went to the schools on Monday morning and will stay as needed.
“Our hearts go out to the family and community as they deal with this tragedy and work through this difficult time, adds Witt.

Wave goodbye to those greenhouse-gas goals of yore
I
N FEBRUARY, THIS column asked the question: “Are B.C.’s greenhouse gas-reduction targets history?” The answer is contained in a new draft plan from BC Hydro on how to meet future power demand. While it’s not explicitly stated, the answer is yes. The draft plan was released in May for discussion purposes, but so far there hasn’t been much discussion. This is surprising given some of the recommendations, such as firing up the Burrard Thermal natural-gas power plant more often and buying fossil-fuel power from the North American market to keep up to demand. The plan confirms a few things that have been evident for a while. Dreams of exporting B.C. hydroelectric power are gone for the foreseeable future. And, with mining ramping up, along with natural-gas development and population growth, BC Hydro now projects electricity demand could rise by 50 per cent over the next 20 years. The emergence of huge shalegas sources in B.C. and across the United States has changed the North American energy picture dramatically, as U.S. electricity producers replace coal by burning cheaper and cleaner gas to ramp up power production. B.C. is losing gas-market share in the U.S., its only export customer for heating fuel and electricity use. Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially
TOM FLETCHER Our Man in
VICTORIA remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse-gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up considerably by 2020. Premier Christy Clark has a new target for 2020: Three liquefied natural-gas production lines feeding high-pressure tankers at Kitimat, for export to Asia. Not only will B.C. need to buy gas-fired power from outside the province to keep up with industrial and residential demand, but the natural-gas industry will need its own new gas-fired electricity to produce LNG for export. Natural gas passed forestry as B.C.’s top resource-revenue source many years ago. In 2005, the volatile gas price spiked up and produced $1-billion in windfall profits that allowed the B.C. government to buy a rare period of public-sector labour peace through the 2010 Olympics. Now a glut of shale gas has pushed the North American price down from its historic range of $4 to
$6 per thousand cubic feet to about $2.40. Despite that low price, gas producers in B.C. are going flat out to develop the Horn River and Montney shale-gas deposits in northeast B.C. I asked David Pryce, vice-president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, why so much gas is being developed now. He said producers have made huge investments in B.C. shale-gas drilling rights and are in an international race to supply LNG to Asian countries, where the price is currently four times higher than in North America. Whatever the domestic price, B.C. gas producers have to show LNG investors such as Mitsubishi and Korea Gas they can fill a steady procession of LNG tankers at a competitive rate. If LNG doesn’t fly here, B.C.’s gas-export market soon evaporates. Currently. gas producers pay about $400 million a year in royalties and that much again to buy up shale-gas drilling rights. The industry already employs about 12,000 workers in B.C. The provincial government has little choice but to redefine its climate targets. Instead of cutting domestic emissions, it will try to take credit for displacing coal power in Asia. Fortunately, B.C.’s main coal exports are for high-grade coal used in steel-making. tfletcher@blackpress.ca
It’s grad season. High school seniors across Kamloops and B.C. are in the final days of their formative education before moving on to post-secondary studies, perhaps travel or maybe the work world. Thompson Rivers University is holding grand ceremonies to bestow degrees and diplomas. It’s a time of transition for students as they emerge from the schools, teachers and friends they’ve known for so many years and step into new worlds, with new challenges and new demands. It’s a time for them to reflect on what they’ve accomplished and to begin charting the path for the next phase of their lives. The only thing certain is the uncertainty of what lies ahead. Economies in North America and Europe are sputtering. The booms in China and India have quieted. Unemployment is up, wages are down, the social safety net is slowly unravelling as governments around the world can no longer sustain the cost of helping their citizens through tough times or into retirement. Some experts say we’re on the brink of a global recession. However, none of that will dull the gleaming smiles of those grads as they march up the aisle to receive their parchment. None of that will diminish their pride of accomplishment. After all, every generation of grads seems to have challenges to face, whether it’s the rising cost of education, changing technology, diminishing job markets, inflation, deflation, debt, sometimes even war. Somehow, they persevere. Many thrive. Most will become upstanding citizens, carving out their little corner of the world. Celebrate, all you grads. Celebrate and be proud and carry that feeling into an uncertain future. This is but the first step of many in a remarkable journey.

City council should stay out of the obesity battle Editor: Re: Kamloops Coun. Nelly Dever’s desire to do something to get residents to drink in a healthier lifestyle (‘Will city hall take on Big Sugar?’): Taking away free choice is never a good idea as next we will take away people’s rights to eat meat and force them to eat only vegetables. What a bad idea. Dever cannot force people to eat what she wants just because she is a lawmaker in our city. Obese people will simply order two drinks instead of one and skinny people without obesity problems will be the ones suffering from this law. In a sense, to pass such a rule would be as bad as prohibiting alcohol in the 1920s — and that started organized crime, an abuse of power in so many ways. If the city wants fewer obese people, it could attempt something else, such as promoting heathier choices, making fruit and vegetable juices cheaper on menus or, perhaps, giving rebates to people who buy juice over pop. We did not vote Dever in to police our intake of food. We voted her in to
deal with city problems. While obesity is a disgusting issue, people eating sugary pops and consuming an overabundance of fatty foods is their choice. If we take free choice away from these people, they will just double up on pops and sugary drinks. Why waste our city money on a problem like this? Why not take those funds and build a free exercise area or use the pop cups as a billboard for promoting healthier choices. Maybe put pictures of healthier choices on the cup, in the hopes some of these obese people will read the side of the cup and next time choose a vegetable drink. Dever runs an exercise business. Why not offer discounts for exercise? Dever should concentrate on things the city really needs, like making our Tranquille Road overpass two lanes instead of one. She needs to realize we can only promote heathier choices, not make people buy them. Glen Alan Powell Kamloops
Editor: Re: Frank Dwyer’s letter of June 7 (‘Kamloops: Definitely not Canada’s Senior Capital’): I wish to respond to Dwyer’s letter about Heritage House rate increases as there must be a misunderstanding on how the rates will affect people. Dwyer wrote: “Let’s say a group of choral singers meets weekly and has 70 members. With an increase of just 80 cents a week per member over 50 weeks, that trifle amounts to a daunting $2,800 per year.” In fact, the new rates would likely cost the group an additional $354 per year — or an extra $5.06 per member per year. Here’s the math: If, as in Dwyer’s example, there are 70 chorus members using the building once a week (let’s say two hours each time), that would amount to 52 weeks multiplied by two hours, which equals 104 hours per year. At the old rate of $5 per hour, they would pay $520 a year, divided by 70 members, which equals $7.42 per member for the year. At the new rate of $8.40 per hour, they would pay $873.60 per year which, when divided by 70 members, is equal to $12.48 per member for the year. At the new rate, it will cost each member $5.06 more per year, or about 10 cents more each week. In addition, while Dwyer wrote that “the number of groups using the facility has steadily declined,” the opposite is true. From 2005 to 2011, the number of regular groups using Heritage House increased to 22 from 16, while the number of hours of use per year increased to 2,786 from 1,053. If a group was to see a $2,800 increase, that group would then be using 823 hours — or close to 30 per cent of all the hours used. I hope this helps to clarify any misunderstandings. Honourable decision by Lee’s was sweet music to his ears Editor: I would like to give a huge thanks to Lee’s Music for something they did for me recently. In Aberdeen, they try again Backers of failed townhouse rezoning at city hall today The developers of a controversial strata project that failed to get rezoning approval from Kamloops council last month are asking the city to take a second look at the development. Craftsman Ventures Ltd. wanted property at 2171 Van Horne Dr. — which is designated for church use — rezoned to allow for a multifamily development. If successful, the project would have seen 64 units built on the site, including a four-storey apartment building. A public meeting in May brought out more than 100 neighbours who were concerned about the project’s effect on slope stability in the area. Neighbour also said the development didn’t fit the character of their neighbourhood of single- family homes.
CITY HALL In a tight 5-4 vote, council decided to not approve the rezoning application. Councillors who voted against the project said they had too many concerns about slope stability and groundwater in the area to go ahead. Representatives for the developers have asked to speak to council today (June 12) to explain their plans to deal with groundwater in the area and present a revised site plan based on some of the concerns raised at the public hearing.
Bus routes may see hours increased Two more bus routes could have their service hours extended
as a proposed new operating agreement for Kamloops Transit comes to council this week. While council agreed to several service expansions during budget talks, a summerservice reduction (which removes Route 11 as well as 15-minute service on routes 1, 3, 7 and 9 for July and August) cut down on the number of transit hours more than expected. That leaves the city with 700 extra hours, which transit staff want to use to expand evening service on the North Shore TRU express and Juniper Ridge routes. Both routes were up for expansion during budget discussions, but were passed over in favour of other options.
The extra hours can also offset some of the route expansions already in place, saving the city $13,000 from its transit budget — which is set to rise by $17,000 this year under the new contract and by $115,000 in 2013. The increase is in addition to the $125,000 budgeted for the transit expansion this year, which rises to $255,000 in 2013. If the expansion goes through, the changes will come into effect in September.

Honorary doctorates awarded Five people will receive honorary doctorates from Thompson Rivers University this week: Irving K. Barber (posthumous), George D. Kuh, Charles James Moore, Sheila WattCloutier and Paul St. Pierre. St. Pierre received his award on May 25 at TRU’s Williams Lake campus. The remaining four recipients will be honoured on Thursday, June 14, and Friday, June 15, during TRU’s Spring 2012 Convocation ceremonies in Kamloops. This year’s recipients were chosen for their lifelong commitment and contribution to society. “The individuals chosen this year by TRU are examples of gifted, extraordinary individuals who have each in their own way, contributed to the wellbeing of us all,” said TRU president and vicechancellor Alan Shaver. “Persons nominated for an honorary degree, or a degree honoris causa, meaning ‘for the sake of honour,’ go through a rigorous university selection committee process. These are indeed, very deserving candidates.” The late Irving (Ike) K. Barber is one of British Columbia’s greatest sons. A gifted entrepreneur and founder of Slocan Forest Products, Barber believed in the value of education and, in particular, in the importance of education for aboriginal peoples. Barber’s philanthropy has enhanced and enabled access to education throughout BC. The many facilities for research and learn-

ing that bear his name include the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Centre at TRU. George D. Kuh is a distinguished scholar, educator and researcher. After a 34-year career at the Indiana University School of Education, Kuh is now Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus at Indiana University Bloomington and adjunct professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign. Kuh’s insight into how to effectively assess the quality of the undergraduate experience, and his ground-breaking National Survey of Student Engagement, are recognized as significant advances in the philosophy and practice of education. Kuh has been widely published, has won numerous awards for
teaching and research and holds six honorary degrees. Charles James Moore is an environmentalist dedicated to raising awareness about the degradation of marine environments around the globe. Moore is the founder of the Algalita Marine Research Institute in Long Beach, Calif., and the author of the 2011 book Plastic Ocean, which tells the story of Moore’s documentation of the plastic waste contaminating the world’s oceans and its effect on sea life and the food chain. Moore has led dozens of expeditions aboard the oceanographic research vessel Alguita and, in 1999, he published a scientific study that found six times more plastic fragments by weight in the central Pacific than zooplankton. That ratio has increased to 46 to one.
SHEILA WATT-CLOUTIER: To be honoured on June 14 at 10 a.m.
Sheila Watt-Cloutier is a human-rights and environmental activist and advocate. In 2010, WattCloutier was named one of 25 Transformational Canadians by the Globe and Mail. As president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada (ICC), she was instrumental in negotiating the Stockholm Convention banning persistent organic pollutants. As international chair of the ICC, WallCloutier identified the impacts of climate change on the Arctic as a human-rights issue. An Officer of the Order of Canada and internationally recognized for her environmental leadership, Watt-Cloutier has won numerous awards. She continues her activism and advocacy work and is working on her book, The Right to Be Cold. Paul St. Pierre is a journalist, writer, author and former Member of Parliament. St. Pierre began his newspaper career in British Columbia in 1945. A columnist with the Vancouver Sun for almost 30 years, he is best known for his fictional accounts of life in B.C.’s CaribooChilcotin region, including his novella,
Breaking Smith’s Quarter Horse. St. Pierre wrote scripts for the groundbreaking 1960s CBC television series Cariboo Country, which for the first time cast First Nations actors to play native characters. From 1968 to 1972, St. Pierre was Liberal MP for the CoastChilcotin riding and parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs. He served as a B.C. police commissioner from 1979 to 1983.

New housing program for Kamloops seniors The Seniors Outreach Society is celebrating 25 years of assisting seniors with independent living with the launch of a new program focused on housing, service coordination and support. “The At Home Outreach Project will not only provide temporary emergency accommodations to seniors, but also a range of support services to help them maintain their independence in the community,” said society executive director Suzan Goguen. Every month, Seniors Outreach responds to more than 70 requests for information about seniors’ housing in Kamloops. More than 20 per cent of the inquiries are relating to seniors who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The At Home Outreach Project makes available for up to three months a furnished unit in an existing lowincome housing development. There, seniors in crisis receive one-on-one support and assistance to obtain permanent, appropriate housing. Staff, volunteers, supporters and clients will celebrate the orga-

Of men and their health Men and their health will be the focus of two forums at the Henry Grube Educational Centre, 245 Kitchener Cres. this week. On Wednesday, June 13, a panel including Matt McLean of ASK Wellness, Doug Knowles of Thompson Rivers University, mental-health clinician Chris Hunt and Jeff Connors, who is partnering with Interior Health on the event, will look at the state of men’s health, why they tend to die earlier than women and make up most of workplace deaths; the state of men’s mental health and places where men can go for help. The session runs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
On Thursday, June 14, the focus moves toward acknowledging gender when looking at health. James Thomson of TRU’s School of Nursing will lead the discussion about issues, such as why acting like a “man” puts men at risk for negative health outcomes and ways to improve men’s health. It runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Both are free.

FOR MANY YEARS, SIX MILE WAS THE PLACE
to be on April 1, which is the official start for many of the Interior’s fly-fishing season. A low-elevation grassland lake, Six Mile was always one of the first lakes to become icefree. Anglers flocked there in big numbers, creating an annual fishing ritual that many looked forward to. However, low water levels over several consecutive years led to devastating winter fish kills and high pH levels made angling difficult as trout endured uncomfortable conditions. As a result, Six Mile Lake faded from many anglers’ minds. Today, the lake is back in prime condition. A watershed enhancement project was established by the provincial Ministry of Environment, Ducks Unlimited, local fish and
game clubs, and local water users. This project has created a stable inflow of water that has reduced the pH to normal levels and restored water to many of the lake’s shoals. Continued annual stocking of 3,000 Pennask rainbow trout by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC means the lake has a healthy population of trout. Expect to catch fish up to two kilograms (4.5-pounds). Six Mile Lake is not very big. Most of the fishing takes place in the bays at each end of the lake. The usual fly-fishing patterns, particularly small chironomids in the early season and shrimp year-round, are very effective. The clear water demands skill from anglers. With so much natural feed to choose from and such water clarity, trout are able to pick over a pattern’s details. Trollers may find it hard to fish when anchored fly-casters are on the water in big numbers. But, once the early season passes, the lake does get quieter. Troll leeches,
dragonfly nymph patterns or shrimp as well as Flatfish and spinners around edges of the deep hole near the south end of the lake. Six Mile Lake is closed to fishing from December 1 to March 31.

DIRECTIONS: From Kamloops, take the Trans-Canada Highway west toward Savona. At the entrance to Six Mile Ranch, now known as the Tobiano residential and golf course development, turn left and go up the narrow frontage road, once a paved route to Ashcroft, which ascends into the hills. The pavement is now broken up, but the road is still passable during the angling season. The lake is found 3 km from the highway. GPS coordinates for Six Mile Lake are 50°44’7.12”N, 120°44’14.89”W.

Fines target bootleggers New B.C. liquor regulations include a $575 fine for adults who buy alcohol for under-aged drinkers or serve them in restaurants and pubs. The fines apply to serving staff who fail to check identification, in addition to penalties already in place for licensed establishments that serve under-aged drinkers. Those penalties range from fines of $7,500 to $10,000 or a licence suspension of 10 to 15 days. Parents and guardians who provide booze to their under-19 children are exempt from the tickets. The new tickets are part of an effort by the B.C. government to streamline the court system, after imposing new administrative penalties for impaired driving. For supplying alcohol to minors, police previously handed out court appearance notices. The new tickets can still be disputed in court, but the onus is on the person ticketed to dispute or pay it. B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association president Ian Tostenson said the organization supports the new penalties.
1928 wine law has sour taste The federal government is finally moving to modernize its alcohol transportation rules, amending a 1928 law that prevents people from buying wine across provincial borders. The House of Commons has unanimously supported a private members’ bill from Okanagan-Coquihalla MP Dan Albas that provides for a personal exemption from a law created during the Prohibition era to stop smuggling and tax evasion. The wine industry and B.C. politicians have argued that individuals should be able to buy or order a case of wine they enjoyed while on vacation. The bill still has to pass the Senate. Once the federal law is changed, B.C. and other provinces would need to establish a personal exemption to allow personal purchase and shipment of alcoholic beverages across provincial borders.
Beer carts don’t need ICBC The B.C. government has changed regulations that required golf-course beverage carts to be covered by an ICBC insurance policy. “Carrying double coverage for liability wasn’t enhancing safety for golf course members and guests,” said Douglas Ferne of the National Golf Course Owners Association. “In fact, it was just creating more work and cost for golf courses, with no real benefits.” The change also relieves miniature cars such as those used in parades, as well as industrial utility vehicles that are only driven briefly to cross roads or get to a worksite. The new regulations require owners to have private third-party liability insurance. In 2011 the B.C. government created similar exemptions for golf carts and mobile equipment such as personal lifts and powered wheelbarrows.

Nothing fluky about Marshall’s rise
PICKS OF THE WEEK!
By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER
sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
Marshall Flukinger looked surprised when he was asked to be interviewed at B.C. Lions’ training camp. Very much a background figure on a stage full of CFL stars, it’s not his current role with the Leos that’s fascinating. Where he came from and where he wants to go — now that’s worth talking about. Born in Haiti, the 21-year-old Westsyde secondary graduate was adopted by Dan and Susanne Flukinger and raised in the River City. That’s where he came from. On the sideline as a professional coach — that’s where he would like to go. Marshall has played the game since he was a child, but the 6-foot2, 230-pound defensive lineman has also been paying his dues on the sideline for more than a decade. He was a waterboy with the now-defunct Kamloops Cowboys of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) until 2003, when the team went the way of the dodo. In fact, he used to serve H2O to Duncan Olthuis, a former Cowboy who is now the head coach of the CJFL’s
Marshall Flukinger, 21, is now in his ninth year working for the B.C. Lions. The Westsyde secondary grad has his eyes on a professional coaching career. Dave Eagles/KTW
Kamloops Broncos. In 2004, Marshall managed to beg, borrow and steal his way into a volunteer position at Lions’ camp, held that year in Kamloops. Gavin Bell and Ken (Kato) Kasuya, members of B.C.’s training staff, took a liking to Marshall, who was invited to help out on the sideline at Lions’ games that year and offered a volunteer spot at training camp

in 2005. After eight years fulfilling the same role, Marshall is taking the next step this season. “When I asked if I could help out this
year more permanently, it was to gain experience because I want to get into the coaching game,” said Marshall, noting B.C.’s defensive backs coach Mark
Washington has become a mentor. “Once the season gets going, I’ll be getting an inside scoop on coaching in the CFL.” His role will still be limited, with Marshall expected to help with equipment and uploading video for coaches, but working full-time with the team and learning from veteran coaches is a step in the right direction. “I just started doing small things here and I’m kind of progressing now,” said Marshall, who moved to Surrey in March. “I’ll be helping the coaching staff wherever they need me.” The Lions pay Marshall enough to cover some of his expenses, but he will be seeking a parttime job on the Lower Mainland to make ends meet. He is hoping the experience pays off down the road. “I want to network my way into a small university football program, or even a junior program, and work my way up,” he said.

Faults & Fixes Welcome to the Bill Bilton Jr. Golf Academy Faults and Fixes Series. In this series of weekly columns in KTW, Bilton will cover 10 of the more common faults golfers face and tell you how to fix them. Readers will also have an opportunity to win two rounds of golf at The Dunes each week by submitting an answer to the skill-testing question asked each week. The Bill Bilton Jr. Golf Academy, Kamloops’ first fullservice golf academy, is located at the The Dunes Golf Club in Westsyde. The philosophy of the academy is that it does not teach a strict method; however, the academy does have a system and strict method of how it teaches. Bilton’s system is unique in that he has a lot of room for individual differences that allows his instructors to use their own creativity. There are many ways to achieve a good golf swing

and play golf well, but history has show all good players share the same core fundamentals. Conversely, virtually no golfer has reached maximum potential by playing golf outside of these fundamentals. From new golfers to low-handicap players, the Bill Bilton Jr. Golf Academy offers programs segmented to match each player’s skill level, speaking to the needs of beginners looking to discover their game, core players looking to develop more consistency, advanced players looking to enhance their skills and elite players looking to refine their game.
LESSON #5 Getting out of the bunker Fault: Struggling to escape the sand. Playing a golf shot from a bunker can be a formidable challenge for many players. Instead of a golf swing, I often feel that I am watching someone chop wood when attempting a sand shot. I believe many golfers feel they have to swing harder than normal to get the ball out of the sand and onto the green, only to find that they have left the ball in the sand because their angle of approach is too steep, or they overcompensate and nail it way over the green. The sand shot is the only shot in golf where you do not actually hit the ball. Instead, the ball rides out of the sand on a narrow divot of sand. Fix: To be a decent bunker player, you must learn how to set your body and clubface relative to your target in order to produce the correct divot of sand. For a standard bunker shot, the first order
of business is to use your sand wedge as it is designed, with bounce. Next, the back edge of the club is actually lower than the front edge. Take your stance so your body is aimed about 30 degrees left of your target and the ball forward in your stance. Flex your knees more than usual. Open the clubface first, then take your grip. Focus on a spot two or three inches behind the ball, which is where the back edge of the club will enter the sand. Swing back along your toe line, with your sternum following your hands. The club head will hinge up above your hands halfway in the backswing. On the downswing you will re-route the clubhead along the target line, promoting a shallow angle of attack. It should feel like the swing has a little loop in it. Accelerate through the ball, keeping your hands and sternum fol-
lowing each other into the follow through. A shorter follow through will promote a shorter shot and a longer follow through will promote a longer shot. Always make the same length of backswing however. You should see immediate improvement in your bunker play and your scores. Good luck! Skill-testing question: Does the Dunes have an outside wedding ceremony location? Yes — for up to 200.

Marlie Rittinger is the latest Kamloops Youth Soccer Association product to join the TRU WolfPack women’s soccer team. “I’m very excited to be home and to play before my friends and family on a regular basis,” said Rittinger, a highly regarded Interior player in her age class. “I went away last year and it wasn’t what I expected. I can’t wait to play for TRU. It’s a place I wanted to go to school and play for since I was young.” The 5-foot-7 player from Ashcroft, who spent last season redshirting with the Simon Fraser University Clan of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, will join the Pacific Western Athletic Association ranks under the tutelage of TRU head coach Tom McManus. He is still deciding where he wants to deploy Rittinger, “Realistically, she is a player who can go anywhere,” said McManus, who coached the WolfPack

She plays midfield and even up front and scores some beautiful goals.” Kindra Maricle, Kelsey Martin, Olivia Rasmussen, Madison Ellis and Courtney Daly are the other KYSA products who signed on to play for the Pack this fall. Rittinger, along with many of her WolfPack teammates, is playing this summer with the Kamloops Heat of the women’s reserve Pacific Coast Soccer League. McManus was happy to hear Rittinger was returning to the River City. “It is so exciting to have her with our club,” he said. “We wanted to have her last year, but she had committed to SFU. I am very happy she has decided to come home.” — with files from TRU

The spoken word open-mic night is held on the second and last Wednesday of every month, wtih the next session taking place tomorrow (Wednesday, June 13), beginning at 8 p.m. All poets are welcome. While a variety of poems are read, each night has a theme poets may wish to tackle. Tomorrow’s theme is “bad instructions”. Andrea Klassen/KTW
POETRY
A L!M S
By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Coffee grinders were still whirring at the back of The Art We Are — but all ears were tuned to the microphone at the front of the Victoria Street coffehouse. Behind the mic flowed an unlikely parade of people: An elementary-school student with fiery red hair, middle-aged women in glasses, younger men with various beard/ponytail combinations and university students. The common thread? Poetry. For the last two years, the cafe has hosted an open-mic night where free verse and rhyming couplets take the place of guitar riffs and a small but dedicated crowd shares its latest works on love, loss,
landscape — and refrigerators. The household-appliances bent comes courtesy of Danny Santos, an employee at The Art We Are and poetry-night regular. “It was one of those things where you come for the first time, there’s a bunch of people reading and you’re like, ‘I could do that.’ And then you just do,” Santos said. While he had attended poetry readings in his hometown of Toronto, Santos remembers them as being pretty quiet. That’s not the case at The Art We Are, where audience responses on a Wednesday night included laughter, a few tears, foot-stomping, voluminous applause and the occasional whoop. Santos’ poems include a hip-hop style tribute to refrigeration, Francis Bacon and the meat that shares his name — “for
Bacon was bold, all told, to dream something to keep pork so cold that it keeps mould controlled.” There is also a toilet-themed Ode to the Throne, which he had been commanded to read. “People seem to really enjoy it,” Santos said. “You get that energy high from being on stage when people actually seem to like what you’re doing. Like, I created something and reading to someone, they really enjoyed it.” Organizer Katrina McNeely hadn’t written much poetry since the early days of high school before discovering the poetry night by accident last winter.

The audience at Poetry Slam nights is one that pays close attention to the poets and their poems. In fact, the audience is what motivates Katrina McNeely, poet and Poetry Slam organizer. “I think it’s a really, really positive environment for anybody to perform in,” she said. “So, whether you’re super into poetry or not, it’s a good first-time performance space.” Andrea Klassen/KTW

Eclectic group of poets X From B1
She then decided to put her name in the bowl a week later (a random draw determines reading order). “I was so nervous,” she said. “My hands were shaking so much I could hardly read what I was supposed to be saying aloud.” Now, having taken over the reigns of the event this spring, McNeely is trying to introduce more youth to the concept. On this particular Wednesday night, the audience included a handful of students from Aberdeen elementary, where McNeely had taught a poetry workshop. Like Santos, it’s the audience that motivates her. “I think it’s a really, really positive environment for anybody to perform in,” she said. “So, whether you’re super into poetry or not, it’s a good first-time performance space.” While the group randomly selects a topic from the audience that writers can use as inspiration between poetry nights, there are no limits on subjects and verse styles. One woman said her
first poem of the night was inspired by John Mellencamp’s “little ditty about Jack and Diane.” Another delivered a piece called Spider Apocalypse about a harrowing and/or hilarious attempt to kill a pesky arachnid. A man in a superhero T-shirt read a piece about a tough breakup — “every time I pass a Chinese food restaurant I think of you . . . I could never hold the chopsticks right.” The poets read from folders, from notebooks, from crumpled sheets of computer paper and, in a couple of cases, from the screens of their cellphones. Some read works that had been turned over for weeks and months, a few explaining they had written their latest pieces a few days or even hours before. McNeely offered up a rare slam — poetry composed as she was speaking into the microphone. Through it all, the audience stayed consistent, smiling through some fumbled words and page turns and clapping hard at the end of each reading. That willingness
to embrace a bit of everything is what McNeely loves about her night. “I like nice people. I guess it’s as simple as that. “Everyone is so respectful and openminded to everyone around them,” she said. “Even though we all write in different styles, it’s really cool for all of us to be able to connect over something when

New Mantracker finds Barriere
T
URN YOUR television on to the Outdoor Life Network on Monday, June 18 — and you might recognize some familiar areas. The network is airing the series Mantracker and, that night, one of two episodes filmed in the Kamloops and Barriere areas will be broadcast. The episodes were shot on Barriere’s trails systems, with Kamloops’ hoodoos providing the backdrop for the opening sequence of the season. “The whole idea of Mantracker coming to Barriere was a direct result of the trails that have been developed in the area through jobcreation projects,” said Connie Falk of Barriere Employment Services. “We believed that being featured on Mantracker would be a great way to promote the trail systems and market the area.” It also helps with the overall objective of the Thompson-Nicola Film Commission (TNFC) to promote the area. Vicci Weller, TNFC executive director of film, the Interior is “poised to attract a number of productions this year. “So far, committed is the German feature film project Gold, a historical story about a German woman and group of immigrants who journey to the north seeking gold — their challenges and

successes. GOLD will film in Kamloops, Cache Creek and Big Bar area “As well, Shana, a Swiss feature film about an aboriginal girl who plays the violin and discovers her unique talents through her relationship with her wolf spirit guide,” Weller said. Gold fill film in Kamloops, Cache Creek and the Big Bar area; Shana will film in the Merritt area. Weller said there are several U.S. films, commercials and TV series now considering the TNRD area, as well. Connie Falk provided on-set logistics to the Mantracker crew and lent the production her paint horse, Striker, which stars in both episodes and in the opening sequence. “Working with the Mantracker crew and being able to participate in the filming was without a doubt one of the
coolest things I’ve ever done,” Falk said. Butch Falk of Barriere was chosen to be the sidekick who helps the Mantracker find his prey, in this case. “I really had no desire to be the sidekick,” Falk said, “but they wanted someone who looked the part of a sidekick. so I guess I fit the bill. “They also needed someone who knew all the country they wanted to film in. “Everyone asks if the chase is real and I can tell you, yes, it is very real. The adrenaline is pumping and everyone is doing their utmost to be the
winner. I saw real fear in the eyes of the prey more than once,” Falk said. For Vicci Weller, TNFC executive director, having Mantracker film in the region is the ultimate in product placement. “The return on investment goes beyond just what the crew spent in Barriere and Kamloops,” Weller said. The TNFC is hosting a public screening of on Saturday, June 16, at Barriere elementary. Those who wish to attend are asked to bring a contribution to the food bank. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Author helps theatre Kamloops author Derek Schreurs is donating the net proceeds of a book release today (June 12) to Western Canada Theatre. The KPMG employee will be at Caffe Motivo, 229 Victoria St., until 6 p.m. to promote his third book, Thought Mechanix. The book is about discoveries, ancient stone tablets, a sercret organization and world-changing ideas that take an accountant on a journey to find the truth.

HONDA CROSSTOUR 2012
Crosstour is a unique take on today’s station wagon
“W
HAT’S THAT YOU’RE DRIVING THIS WEEK?” A NEIGHBOUR ASKED ME RECENTLY AS HE WALKED PAST THE HOUSE. “It’s a Honda Crosstour,” I replied. “Never seen one of them,” was his response. I’m not surprised because, even with all the driving and travelling I do, I rarely see one on the road. The mid-size crossover market is a tough one to crack, as Honda has found with the Crosstour. Battling the likes of the Nissan Murano, Toyota Venza, Subaru Outback and a bunch of other vehicles, the Crosstour has been LORNE DRURY seen as an underperformer for the company since its debut in late First 2009 as a 2010 model. DRIVE Honda’s history shows it hit the mark with most vehicles, so it’s surprising the Crosstour has been less than a sales success. Perhaps it’s the “out there” styling or the fact that people just don’t know what to make of it. Is it a car? Is it a station wagon? Or is it a sport utility vehicle (SUV)?
Whatever it is, Honda has tried to put together the best features of a car and an SUV in the Crosstour, so it makes sense to call it a crossover, which is an SUV built on a car platform. I think of it as a tall wagon, but that’s another story for another day. The thing that really stands out for me with the Crosstour is its size. Drive the Accord sedan and it doesn’t feel like a big car. Drive the Crosstour and it does feel like a big vehicle, particularly when you try to back into a parking spot.
Honda Crosstour 2012 at a glance Body style: Five-door mid-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV). Drive method: Front- or four-wheel drive. Engine: 3.5-litre 24 valve SOHC VTEC V6 engine (271 hp, 254 lb/ft of torque). Cargo capacity: 728 litres. Fuel economy: 4WD— 11.8/7.6/9.9 L/100 km (city/ highway/combined); FWD— 11.5/7.2/9.6. Price: EX-L 2WD $34,990; EX-L 4WD $36,990; EX-L 4WD Navi $38,990; as tested $38,990. Website: honda.ca.
But, that size is what adds to the practicality of the Crosstour. With the rear seats upright, there are 728 litres of cargo space when you open up the rear hatchback. The space is limited somewhat in the middle due to the strut towers but, fold down the rear seats and you have a whole lot more space for cargo — but still not as much as the compact CR-V sport ute, which has a cargo volume of 2,007 litres with the rear seats down and 1,054 litres with the seats up. The Crosstour has a 3.5-litre V6 engine, producing 271 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, the car delivers fuel economy numbers of 11.8/7.6/9.9L/100 km (city/highway/combined) for the four-wheel drive (4WD) version and 11.5/7.2/9.6L/100 km for the front-wheel drive (FWD) model. Helping achieve these numbers is a variable cylindermanagement system that adapts to the driving needs, engaging all six cylinders when needed, but only three or four cylinders during moderate highway, city or country road driving. My tester was the EX-L 4WD Navi. This is the top of three trim levels, priced at $38,990 and, as the name implies, has four-wheel drive and a navigation system. X See CROSSTOUR B8

The floor height of the rear cargo area is just right for loading and unloading goods. With the rear seat upright, the cargo compartment has 728 litres of space. For a vehicle that starts in the mid $30ks, the Crosstour’s cabin is less luxurious than one might expect. However, the interior is functional, comfortable and well thought-out.

Crosstour needs its rear-view X From B6
The base EX-L 2WD starts at $34,990 and the EX-L 4WD is $36,990. The Crosstour offers seating for five (although four sit more comfortably) with generous rear-seat legroom. Although comfortable, most people won’t be wowed by the interior. It is not nearly as luxurious looking as the Toyota Venza, but it is well-outfitted. All trim levels feature 18-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, a seven speaker, 360-watt AM/FM/CD premium audio system with six-disc in dash CD player with MP3/ Windows Media Audio playback system, leather-trimmed seating surfaces, dual-zone automatic climate control, power moonroof with tilt feature, Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity and a backup camera incorporated into the rear-view mirror. The driver’s seat has eight power adjust-
ments, while the passenger seat has four. Moving up the trim levels basically gives you four-wheel drive in the EX-L 4WD and four-wheel drive with navigation system in the EX-L 4WD Navi. The EX-L 4WD Navi has the rear-view camera monitor in the navigation system’s screen and it is needed in this vehicle. I now see why that monitor is standard on all trim levels. Even for a sixfooter like myself, rear visibility is poor, even with the split window in the hatch. Side visibility to the rear is also compromised by the design. You’ll find the rearview camera gets lots of use. Where the Crosstour shines is interior storage. There are cubbies everywhere, with a nice-size centre console with storage compartment and roomy door pockets. There’s also a neat underfloor storage area in the rear cargo area
with a reversible cover. Since the Crosstour is based on a sedan platform, ingress and egress is excellent, although tall passengers may have to watch their noggin in the rear due to the slope of the roofline. On the road, the Crosstour behaves like the big vehicle it is. Since it is longer and heavier than the Accord sedan, it isn’t quite as nimble in tight parking lots, though. The 3.5-litre V6 has adequate power and the car’s ride and handling are refined. If you do much driving in snow country during the winter months, the 4WD version will be welcome. In an effort to spur
sales, Honda is remaking the Crosstour for 2013 with the first official glimpse of the design direction being unveiled recently at the New York Auto Show. The Crosstour Concept shown there has more-rugged, aggressive-looking front end and a less radical, more traditional CUV rear end. But, until that new model is released, buyers in the market for a versatile, sedan-like wagon might want to take a look at the 2012 Crosstour. It has a lot of standard content packed into it — and you’ll be driving a vehicle that’s a little different from the norm.

LOCAL NEWS DESIGNING WOMEN Westsyde resident Sheila Anderson (left) gets some tips on how to remodel her laundry room from celebrity home designer Jillian Harris (right). Anderson won BC Hydro’s Power is Precious contest for her energy-saving tip — washing clothes in cold water and adding a dry towel when placing them in a dryer to cut down on drying time. For her entry, Anderson won an energy efficient home makeover with Harris, along with a new Energy Star washer, dryer and dishwasher. She also received a $1,000 lighting package for more energy efficient lights and a $1,000 gift certificate from Sears. Michael Potestio/KTW
ESTHER KATE KETSA April 18, 1960 – June 2, 2012 It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Esther Kate Ketsa on June 2, 2012. She was born April 18, 1960 in Vernon, BC where she grew up. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Shaun Jennings; Mother Irene Ketsa; brother Ken (Cheryl) Ketsa; sisters Lorraine (Mike) Sorba, Elaine Grevenitis; Nan Jean Jennings; father in-law and mother in-law Dave and Helen Jennings; sister inlaw Karen (Rick) Clarke; brother in-law Gary (Leanne) Jennings and special friends Wayne and Marsha. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends who loved her dearly. Esther had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed life to the fullest. Whether fishing or feeding the pelicans at her favourite lake, Tzenzaicut Lake, you could also find her quadding or motor biking. Gardening and cooking were other passions she had. If she could bring every stray animal into her home she would as she was a very loving and caring person. Family and friends were dear to her heart. She was a vibrant, positive person who will never be forgotten, always loved and greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 24 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Hall between 1 pm and 4 pm, 725 York Ave Kamloops, BC. All those who knew her are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Paul’s Hospital Heart Transplant Clinic 5C Providence Wing 1081 Burrard St, Vancouver BC V5J 1L6, or the Kamloops SPCA.
“If Tears Could Build A Stairway, And Memories A Lane, I’d Walk Right Up To Heaven And Bring You Home Again”.
GERALD RAY HILL December 24, 1929 - June 4, 2012 The love you gave to those you knew will never be forgot, sorrow surrounds our hearts, now we are all left to feel the loss for one of the greatest men we’ve ever known, It was time to say goodbye.
COLIN MOWAT GOWANS 1943 – 2012
God wrapped his arms around you for he felt your pain and guided you to Heaven to reunite with your eldest son Wayne. We will always love and miss you through the ache within our hearts, but the memories we will always have of the strength and the courage you impart. So rest assured we are proud to say that we have all been blessed with the warm thought of knowing you were a wonderful husband and you were a wonderful Dad. For those of us left behind don’t worry for a moment as you have fulÀlled your goals by the love which you’ve instilled providing an everlasting bond coupled with great morals. This is why our family expresses to the man we’ve loved so dear that you will never be forgotten, you will forever and always live deep in our hearts, in our thoughts, and in our prayers. Born 82 years ago in Rosetown, Sask. on Christmas Eve, he was one of 9 children. Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Shirley (Seaholm) Hill and three of their four children. Sadly predeceased by eldest son Wayne Ray Hill one year ago. Survived by son Gary Hill and two daughters: Gale (Hill) - Kim Grayston and Lynne (Hill) McIntyre. four grandchildren: Corey, Carrie Grayston and Marina, Shelby McIntyre. two great-grandchildren: Lauren and Danica. two surviving sisters Dorris (Hill) - Bob Fraser and Norma Olsen, and several nieces, nephews and in-laws. Gerald had lived in Kamloops for the past 46 years as a business owner in the trucking industry while raising his family. We would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and doctors on the 6th South Áoor at RIH for your compassion and care. A special thank you to the young couple Jillian and David in my father’s room for the lovely Áowers and the compassionate thought.
There will be no funeral service at this time.
T he Merry Lark

Colin is survived by his sister Anne Gowans (Klaus Ortwein) and his brothers Bil (Doreen) Gowans, and Dale (Jodene) Gowans, and their families. Colin was a steel fabricator for many years with M3 Steel and an avid ham radio operator. VEN BNM has signed out. He was so loved. There will be no formal ceremony at his request. Arrangements entrusted to Kamloops Funeral Home 250-554-2577 Condolences may be emailed to the family from www.kamloopsfuneralhome.com
T he merry, merry lark was up and singing; and the hare was out and feeding on the lea, And the merry, merry bells below were ringing, When my child’s laugh rang through me. Now the hare is snared and dead beside the snow yard, And the lark beside the dreary winter sea, And my baby in his cradle in the churchyard Waiteth there until the bells bring me.
