The mid-Island’s economic forecast for the next year is about as bleak as the recent weather – mostly grey with some sunny spots. Woody Hayes, of Hayes Stewart Little & Co., said a number of factors have combined to drag the economy down, notably job reduction, slow population growth, and a decrease in housing starts. A recent study indicates the Vancouver Island-Sunshine Coast region lost 16,700 jobs last year, with 92 per cent of those outside the Victoria Census Metropolitan Area. The industries that suffered the largest losses were health care, social assistance and trades, which combined for 12,600 job losses. “The economic recovery we started to see in 2010 gained little momentum last year,” said Hayes. “Population growth, which has been the engine for much of the region’s economic growth over recent years, was at a 10-year low. Housing starts and residential building permits were also down, as were property re-sales.” Vancouver Island Real Estate Board statistics show resales across the region were down four per cent in May 2012 from May 2011, and average sale prices in Nanaimo dropped eight per cent from $379,410 in May 2011 to $349,554 in May 2012. The area’s unemployment rate currently resides just above six

per cent, one per cent below the national average. Students under 25 are having a harder time finding work – their unemployment rate is 10.5 per cent in B.C. Resource industries made nominal job gains, however, with forestry, fisheries, mining and oil and gas increasing by about 2,400 jobs. Forestry, while still lagging well below pre-recession standards, was propped up slightly due to Asian demand for pulp and lumber said the study, released by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of B.C. That demand prompted some mill reopenings, including Western Forest Products’ Ladysmith sawmill, while Catalyst added recent hires in Port Alberni and Powell River. Raimo Marttala, an economics professor at Vancouver Island University, said global uncertainty, which is evident in the markets, has a big effect on the local economy, as do provincial cutbacks. ◆ See ‘PROVINCIAL’ /6

Massive wind turbines offloaded for N. Island BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Theo Fredrich discusses the importance of pulling out drone frames, which attracts the largest population of mites, to protect the hive from being wiped out.
Workshop creates buzz over bees’ importance BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
T
he inner workings of beehives got workshop participants buzzing Saturday at Fredrich’s Honey Farm. The workshop, hosted by Fredrich’s and Nanaimo Foodshare, taught participants about beekeeping and the importance of bee health, mite sampling, using pollen traps and preparing to move hives to the forest. Theo Fredrich, a beekeeper for more than 60 years, demonstrated the two queen system, which includes placing a second mated queen and bees on top of another colony. A two queen hive may grow to twice the population than if they were split into single queen hives. Fredrich said the purpose is to create a larger hive for honey production. For participant Dave Butler,
“

from Nanoose Bay, the workshop offered an opportunity to gain more knowledge on the subject. Butler has kept bees since last year, is a member of the Nanaimo Bee Club and has attended about five workshops on keeping bees. “You get hands-on experience,” he said. “You can only get so much from books.”
Elizabeth Waller, a volunteer with Nanaimo Foodshare, said she’s passionate about food and decided to contact Fredrich about providing the workshop. “It’s about food security and sustainability and ways we can support each other on the Island and grow our food shed,” she said. Waller said some people don’t know about many of the programs Nanaimo Foodshare is providing in the central Island. Foodshare is trying to support people interested in local food through education programs, healthy eating classes and more to increase food security, connect community organizations and increase self-sufficiency on the Island. Wind turbine blades headed for the north end of the Island are offloaded at the Nanaimo Port Authority’s Duke Point deep-sea facility Monday.

The Nanaimo Port Authority is playing a key role in the development of future energy sources on Vancouver Island. The first of 55 massive wind turbines destined for a new wind farm project at Cape Scott were delivered to the port’s Duke Point facility Monday by the deep sea vessel Star America. It was the first of seven deep sea vessels that will continue to unload the turbines at Nanaimo’s port through to August. The structures are massive – the turbine towers are comprised of three sections, weighing between 35 and 50 tonnes, and when installed will stand 80 metres (256 feet) high. Each blade fans out 50 metres (161 feet). The nacelle, which sits on top of the tower and generates the power, is the single heaviest component, weighing 72 metric tonnes. Doug Peterson, port spokesman, said the project is significant because it represents a shift from the facility being largely an exporting operation to one that can also receive specialized goods. “This is brand new to us,” said Peterson. “And it’s very exciting for us because Nanaimo has largely been known as an export port as a major exporter of wood products. This adds a new dimension to the
types of things that we can do, including handling very specialized cargo such as wind turbines. We’re hoping this project will open up some new avenues for us.” The port put together the contract with Vestas, the wind turbine’s manufacturer. The project has been in the works for years, but it was only the last few months port officials and representatives from DP World, the facility managers, finalized arrangements and procedures. DP World is handling the stevedoring on the project, as well as the terminal management, making for a seamless operation. The result, said Peterson, is companies considering shipping to the area will now consider the Nanaimo port as a place to unload. International Power Canada is the company building the new wind farm, which, once completed will be able to produce enough energy to supply about 30,000 homes. The wind farm is the first of its kind on the Island. International Power Canada is investing about $300 million in the project while generating about 150 construction jobs. The turbine parts will be trucked by specialized equipment throughout the summer, likely in the early morning hours, closer to their installation site.

That’s why we’d like to hear from you before proposing any changes. ICBC is updating the way we set premiums for Basic vehicle insurance coverage. You’ve told us the system would be fairer if lower-risk drivers paid less for their insurance and higher-risk drivers paid more. We agree. Before making any changes to our current system, we’d like your input. We’re considering several options that may impact what you pay for your Basic insurance in the future. Your feedback will go into the final changes that we propose for fairer Basic vehicle insurance pricing.

Social service workers planning strike vote Talks broke down last week between the province, employers and the 10 unions representing B.C.’s 15,000 community social services workers. The parties were negotiating since February, but the unions now plan to take a strike vote. Wages, benefits and concessionary demands by the employer, including revisiting improvements gained in the last round of bargaining are the outstanding issues for the union. “We are asking for a fair and reasonable deal for the caring
professionals that care and support adults with developmental disabilities, youth at risk, and women fleeing abusive relationships and other vulnerable people in B.C.,” said James Cavalluzzo, chairman of the multi-union bargaining committee. Under the B.C. Libe r a l g ove r n m e n t ’s “co-operative gains” mandate, wage and benefit improvements must be funded through increased efficiencies. The union says its bargaining committee tabled alternative proposals on cost savings and efficiencies.
Community social services workers provide a wide range of assistance to people of all ages, abilities and backg rounds, including: providing child care for families; employment and housing support for people with developmental disabilities; specialized services for immigrants; and substance abuse and addictionrelated services.

Provincial cutbacks hurt job market ◆ From /1 “Two of the major job losses, in health care and social assistance, are provincial government responsibilities and with their cutbacks and reduc-
tions in funding it’s not a surprise,” said Marttala. “The bigger picture, though, is the uncertainty, especially in the U.S. and the Eurozone, where problems are really coming
to a head. Those all impact Canada.” The economic decline in the mid-Island area, however, bucks the trend of other areas in B.C., which have seen improvement in vari-
ous sectors. Hayes said reasons why other parts of B.C. are experiencing economic growth while the Island stagnates is foreign investment and a sunny outlook for oil and gas. “The Lower Mainland has a huge influence from offshore investment and we don’t see that on the Island, at least not to the same extent,” said Hayes. “That is largely driven by immigration settlement in areas like Richmond and Vancouver, and those immigrants come with money. In the north we’re seeing the oil patch doing well, a lot of activity. Again, we don’t have a

lot of that going on on the Island.” Marttala added he feels the grey outlook for the region will brighten. “It’s very cyclical, but in the long term I think we’ll be OK. I don’t see this a permanent feature of our local economy,” he said. Hayes added he is cautiously optimistic 2012’s outlook will improve.

The B.C. government has reached a tentative agreement for a four-year contract with the province’s 10,000 family doctors and specialists. The government released few details of the agreement, which must be ratified by members of the B.C. Medical Association in a vote to be completed by the end of July. The BCMA board is recommending acceptance. Health Minister Mike de Jong said the tentative deal represents a 1.5-per cent increase in the province’s overall budget for doctor fees over the first two years. That translates to an additional $45 million in each year. The proposed agreement doesn’t specify an increase for years three and four, but rather commits the government and the BCMA to negotiate that amount later. The health ministry promises that the new deal will improve patient access to family doctors, including in rural areas, and improve recruitment and retention of specialists. De Jong said an additional $20 million is available for specialists, but it is up to the BCMA’s various committees to work out how it is shared. “There will now be a discussion within the specialist groups about how that will be allocated,” de Jong said. The government is still negotiating with other health care employee groups and much of the rest of the provincial public service, under a mandate the government called “cooperative gains.” The ministry and the BCMA have agreed to a review of laboratory services that de Jong said may save $10 million to go to other priority areas. The 10 unions representing 15,000 community social services workers announced Friday that they will be joining other provincial employees in taking a strike vote after four months of talks. Union leaders say their members are the lowest-paid in the provincial public service, and there are no savings to be found to finance a raise.

VIU offering experience in running equipment High school students from the mid-Island interested in learning more about a career in construction trades are invited to sign up for a three-day event called Heavy Metal Rocks next fall. The event is being organized by Vancouver Island University’s Trades and Applied Technology department, Nanaimo and Parksville school districts, the Vancouver Island Construction Association and WorkSafe B.C. “We only have room for 32 students, so we encourage interested students currently in Grades 10 and 11 to get an application in right away,” said Kellie Spence of VIU’s trades faculty. The early bird application deadline is Wednesday (June 13), with interviews in late June and September. Heavy Metal Rocks is scheduled for Oct. 10-12 at the Timberlands Road training facility used for VIU’s Heavy Equipment Operator training program. Students will rotate through 16 equipment stations to learn about heavy machinery. Machines will range from existing equipment at the site to donated brand-new units being loaned just for the Heavy Metal Rocks event. At each station an experienced equipment operator will mentor students on the machine operation, safety and capabilities. For further information, please contact Spence at 250-740-6130 or e-mail hmr@viu.ca.

Astronaut makes time to meet two Nanaimo students BY MARILYN ASSAF

CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN
In the doghouse Debbie Trueman, Nanaimo Museum general manager, crawls out of Snoopy’s doghouse in the museum’s during setup for the feature exhibition To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA. The exhibition looks at the 1969 Apollo 10 mission, in which Peanuts comic strip characters Snoopy and Charlie Brown were the mission’s code names for the lunar lander and command module. Children enter the doghouse’s darkened interior to view images of Earth and the moon simulating how Apollo 10 astronauts saw them from space. The exhibit runs until Sept. 3.
New penalties for serving under-age New B.C. liquor regulations include a $575 fine for adults who buy alcohol for under-aged drinkers, or serve them in restaurants and pubs. The fines apply to serving staff who fail to check identification, in addition to penalties already in place for licensed establishments that serve under-aged drinkers. Those penalties range from fines of $7,500 to $10,000 or a licence suspension of 10 to 15 days. Parents and guardians who provide booze to their under-19 chil-
dren are exempt from the tickets. “These changes give police and liquor inspectors another tool to make it harder for minors to get alcohol,” said Rich Coleman, minister responsible for liquor and gambling policy. The new tickets are part of an effort by the B.C. government to streamline the court system, after imposing new administrative penalties for impaired driving. For supplying alcohol to minors, police previously handed out court appearance notices.
t’s a day Emily Nelson won’t forget. The Hammond Bay Elementary school French immersion student recently met her heroine, Canadian astronaut Julie Payette. “She was really nice and friendly,” said Emily. Emily, her mom Jodi and sister Alex waited outside the Port Theatre in Nanaimo on June 4 after they heard Payette was coming to town to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Technology at Vancouver Island University’s spring convocation. Emily was holding a large poster she made as a Grade 4 class project highlighting Payette’s accomplishments and adventures in space. “The timing of Ms. Payette coming to Nanaimo to receive the VIU award was unbelievable,” said Dave Nelson, Emily’s dad. “Emily did the class project on Canadian astronaut Julie Payette over a month ago. She never dreamed they would meet.” A family friend read in the newspaper that Payette was coming to Nanaimo, so Emily’s dad e-mailed John Phipps, a former school principal he worked with at Ladysmith Secondary School. Phipps, now field experience coordinator in VIU’s Faculty of Education, was attending the convocation and would see what he could do. “I told the girls and their mom to wait outside the theatre but couldn’t promise anything,” said Phipps. When Payette arrived at the Port Theatre for the ceremony, Phipps asked if she would like to make the day of two little girls. Payette willingly ducked outside to meet her fans. She looked over Emily’s poster, talked to the girls and their mom, gave them badges and signed pictures. “My girls are ecstatic,” said Nelson. “They were so happy to meet her and have the chance

to talk with her. I think they are star-struck.” “In French, [Payette] asked me my name and how old I was, and then asked if she could see my poster,” said Emily. “She said thank you for waiting so long to see her, and to work really hard in school, and that we should do whatever we want in life but to do it well.” Asked why she chose Payette for her class project on Canadian explorers Emily said, “because she is French and Canadian, and a girl, and because she got to go into space, and she’s still alive.” After Payette received the honorary doctorate award at VIU’s convocation ceremony, she gave a passionate and inspiring speech to more than 300 graduates and their family members. A replay of the speech can be viewed at www.viu.ca/ convocation/live/ Originally from St. Hubert, Que., Payette completed two Space Shuttle missions in 1999 and 2009. She is the second Canadian woman to have flown in space.

Trustees play for martyrdom The Cowichan Valley school board has stated for public consumption it hopes its deficit budget will open eyes and change minds at the provincial level, and result in more funding for Cowichan schools. But don’t kid yourself. The school board made this move – deficit budgets are illegal – with eyes open wide. It fully expects to be fired at the end of the month. On a certain level, it wants to be. The goal of this political play by the five trustees who hold the balance of power is to sacrifice themselves as a way to gather support for the cause. It is their hope their dismissal will be met by the general public with anger, that the people will rally to the cause of the underdog, and the government will be perceived by the public-at-large as bullies in need of a good smackdown. It is a calculated move for martyrdom. Three weeks into the campaign, the question remains: will that martyrdom have its desired effect? There has been some public reaction in the form of a rally and an orchestrated letters-to-the-editor campaign, but the majority is from expected corners – district employees and disgruntled trustees and union leaders from across B.C. But the hammer has yet to drop and there is good reason to suspect that when it does, other voices will awaken. There is no shortage of people who are fed up with this government on many different levels. This may be the straw that tips their rage. We’ve heard mixed reaction from the community. There are those who oppose the trustees simply because they are breaking the law. There are those who oppose the government simply because they see it as business-first, people-second, and are offended. But it’s unclear whether the community sees the trustees as fighting for district kids or for district employees. Where that falls will ultimately decide their sainthood. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, 201 Selby St., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 2R2. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org

The agency’s approval of a product is also based on the assumption that label instructions are not followed all the time and that overuse may occur. The B.C. Agriculture Council informed the committee that a weed or pest problem that spreads from a residential property could have serious economic consequences – the committee heard that farmers near residential areas in Quebec are reporting more problems with certain pests and city bylaws are hindering the ability to manage invasive plants. Regardless of the committee’s findings, the fewer chemicals we pump into ourselves and our environment, the better, and pulling weeds out by hand is not egregious for the average homeowner. So far, I’ve found natural methods of insect and pest control to be quite effective for my gardens. But for those who continue to use pesticides, the recommendations will hopefully result in less pesticide use – after all, the committee wording was that the scientific evidence wasn’t there “at this time”. The strengthened regulations on pesticide sales, monitoring and education recommended by the committee are a good step toward ensuring the public is better informed about this issue, although if people are looking for an easy and cheap solution, they could still potentially overuse pesticides. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Victoria offers an example of better planning process To the Editor, Re: Public process sorely lacking, Opinion, June 7. I’ve waited 10 years since returning to Nanaimo for an editorial of this calibre to appear on the subject of Nanaimo’s abysmal failure to plan properly. Congratulations on a job well done. Some readers may think that what passes for planning in Nanaimo is unexceptional and they may well be right. But cities that are universally admired do things differently – much differently. It’s never too late to start and in Victoria, only a few miles down the road, we have a reasonably good example of how planning is often done to a much higher standard. A recent issue of the Victoria Times Colonist brought to light two interesting aspects of Victoria’s contemporary planning ethos. One item discussed how a James Bay developer had
worked closely with the local neighbourhood association to plan a condo development, taking into account the needs and wishes of the local community as well as the impact of his proposal on neighbouring properties. The outcome was satisfactory to all concerned and city council was spared any controversy. No change of provincial law was required to achieve this result – only a change in the attitude of developers and city hall staff. The other item revealed that things don’t always go right with respect to land use planning in Victoria and that not all councillors are prepared to go along with the secretivemeeting flow that is common in such matters. The result: three councillors are holding their own public hearing on a public land use question of vital civic importance that their confreres would just as soon discuss and
make decisions about behind closed doors. I wouldn’t bet against the lead councilor of this group becoming the next mayor of Victoria. He clearly has his thumb on a discontented public’s pulse. There should and could be useful lessons locally. We’ve had too much secrecy, too little meaningful public involvement in rezoning (and other) decisions and arguably a great deal of harm done to the financial interests of homeowners who have often been rudely impacted by zoning changes rammed through without any regard for their interests. The remedy is not far to seek: councillors should start acquainting themselves with procedures used in progressive communities of the kind Nanaimo aspires to be. Victoria would be a good place to start. Eric Ricker Nanaimo
Readers respond: Feedback on news Writer’s anti-dog bias growing tiresome To the Editor, Re: Dog problem requires more enforcement, Letters, June 7. Your Thursday edition printed yet another diatribe on the subject of dogs from Tom McCartney, repeating ad nauseum the same mantra expressed in his earlier letters. Frankly, I’m surprised that the News Bulletin continues to feed his unhealthy obsession with this subject by once again printing the bile he spews. Yes indeed, there are good dogs and bad dogs, good owners and bad owners. In fact there are good drivers and bad drivers – in reality good and bad everything, but let’s not get things completely out of proportion. I suggest that McCartney should carry a cellphone with all the requisite numbers
regarding canine control on speed dial and use it at every opportunity. This would be infinitely preferable to continuing to bombard the Bulletin and its readers with his anti-dog bias on a subject that he has already done to death. Garry Bradford Nanaimo
More patrols in parks simply unnecessary To the Editor, Re: Dog problem requires more enforcement, Letters, June 7. What deeper issues are affecting dog haters that complain to the newspapers? It cannot be just the dog waste, after all how often in a lifetime does one step in to it? The level of fervour seems rather anal-retentive. Of course people blessed with dogs should clean up the mess, and almost all do.
But because of the occasional lapse, one writer suggests that we increase the number of police in our parks. What a pretty picture that makes. Imagine ourselves and our children strolling through parks full of police patrols. I suppose the writer thinks that would be an improvement over the fairly remote possibility of seeing a bit of poop. Human beings existed and thrived for millions of years in abysmal conditions. We can handle quite a lot. If the rare sight of animal waste horrifies you, then you are a lucky person. Many people have serious things to worry about. At an average yearly salary of $54,350, the RCMP are paid to prevent, control and solve crime, not to police our city’s litter. J. Katelnikoff Nanaimo

The airport kicked off its Blue Navigator Volunteer Ambassador Program with volunteer ambassadors welcoming travellers at the airport, giving directional assistance and answering questions related to facilities and services available and providing information on the many attractions found on Vancouver Island. “We are launching the program this week with nine trained volunteers. Thieves make hay during warm weather Canadians taking advantage of warmer weather by spending a greater amount of time outdoors are reminded that thieves take advantage of summer too. Insurance stats from Aviva Canada show that residential burglaries spike in summer months with a 13 per cent, 22 per cent and 32 per cent higher frequency in June, July and August, respectively, than February, which shows the lowest occurrence of residential theft claims. “Canadians just provide more opportunity for theft to occur in the warmer months,” said
Wayne Ross, of Aviva Canada. “The longer residents spend away from their homes, without taking the proper precautions, the greater chance that thieves will strike.” Friday is a favourite day for thieves, with break-ins more common at the start of the weekend than Sunday, the day with the lowest incidence of break-ins. Tips to preventing a break and enter include: ◆ Upgrading the locking systems on doors and windows. Ask yourself if you could easily force entry. ◆ Ensure all windows and
doors are locked when out of the home or overnight. Change the locks when moving into a new property. ◆ Make a home look occupied when you’re away. Park a car in the driveway, leave some lights and a radio on, ask a neighbour to collect mail and newspapers and have your lawn mowed. ◆ Install a security device with an alarm or flashing lights. Some alarms contact authorities directly when activated. ◆ Do a home inventory with your video camera. It takes time, but saves the stress and heartache of trying to list stolen possessions.

Members of ther media get a ride aboard RCM-SAR 27. The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary – Pacific has changed its name to Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue to recognize the distinct identity of the service.
Name change about tradition
I
SEARCH AND RESCUE moniker recognizes distinct service identity.
Volunteer marine rescuers on the West Coast have a new name and a new look as they continue their 150year tradition of saving lives on the water. Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue is the new name for the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary – Pacific, an all-volunteer organization with stations in 46 communities in British Columbia. “We work very closely with the Canadian Coast Guard but we are a separate organization,” said president Randy Strandt. “Our new name recognizes the distinct identity of our service, and helps emphasize the strong links we have to the communities that depend on us, and on which we depend for fundraising.” The name change affects more than a thousand members in British Columbia where volunteers are on
call around the clock and are often the first to respond to emergencies on the water. In the past year they have taken part in more than 700 missions and assisted more than 850 people. Their area of operation covers some 27,000 square kilometres of B.C. coastline and includes some of the busiest waterways in the world. Crews are supported by local societies which raise funds for community-based rescue vessels. Funding comes from private donations, corporate contributions, community grants, legacies, local fundraising, and gaming grants. Operational funding is also provided by the Canadian Coast Guard. “There is a long tradition of marine rescue service here on the West Coast, and our new name reflects a growing sophistication in the training we provide to our crews, the professional skills they bring to the public, and the amazing capability of the modern rescue vessels that they operate,” said Strandt.
Summer break tough on student reading skills With summer quickly approaching, most children are counting the days until school ends and daydreaming on how to spend their class-free days. While summer vacation is a good way for kids to take a break and refresh from classes and homework, research shows children who don’t read enough during the summer actually fall behind in their reading
skills come September. A summer reading club is available through the Vancouver Island Regional Library, offering programs to children in kindergarten to Grade 7 and a Read to Me program for preschoolers and those not reading independently. Registration begins July 3 and for more information, please visit www. virl.bc.ca.

By Christina Symons and John Gillespie As an avid, yet not entirely successful, gardener, I was excited to pick up the next book from Christina Symons and John Gillespie on outdoor projects. Their first, Everyday Eden, featured bright, colourful photographs to accompany beginner garden projects. Their second, Sow Simple, goes one step further, challenging gardeners to try cold boxes and greenhouses, build garden walls and raise plants that take more care and attention than new gardeners are used to. The language is simple and jargon free, the instructions clear and succinct. But what makes this book stand out from other gardening collections – and what made their first book stand out, too – is the photography. Stunning photographs accompany the couple’s efforts in their gardens in Roberts Creek, B.C., capturing the beauty of their home and hobby. Not only do they serve as inspiration but also as just a beautiful book to read. I don’t know if my California lilac will ever look as full and healthy as the one in the book, but it’s definitely fun to read how other gardeners try, fail and succeed at planting some challenging crops. – Melissa Fryer Published by: Harbour Publishing Available at: Local bookstores List price: $29.95

Timbermen take heart from 11-11 tie I SENIOR A lacrosse team comes back from 6-1 deficit. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
Sometimes a tie can be unfulfilling, but this one probably gave fans their fill. The Nanaimo Timbermen tied the Burnaby Lakers 11-11 on Sunday night in Western Lacrosse Association action at Frank Crane Arena. The T-men were able to take a point from the Lakers despite being down 6-1 early in the second period. Nanaimo came all the way back to lead 9-8 with three minutes left before the visitors sent it to overtime tied 9-9. In the extra frame Burnaby went up 11-9 early, but again, Nanaimo came back. “You’ve got to be somewhat happy with taking a point out of that game,” said Cayle Ratcliff, Timbermen veteran. “I’m really proud of the way the boys battled back. It took a full team effort.” He said it took a lot of character to respond to Sunday’s adversity. “I really don’t think our teams in the last couple of years have showed that kind of character to be able to come from 6-1 and a goalie change,” Ratcliff said. Starting goalie Matt King was pulled late in the first period and backup Zak Boychuk gave his team the goaltending it needed to make a comeback possible. He made 36 saves on 41 shots as the T-men were outshot 57-51. “We can’t put ourselves in that position at the first period… We had to chase, chase, chase for two periods,” said Art Webster, Timbermen coach. “I thought the energy level was great from

the second period all the way through and in the overtime but that’s how we need to play for 60 minutes if we want to be successful.” Ratcliff said the Timbermen might have started slow because going into the game with a 2-3 record, they knew it was an important one in the standings. “Going 3-3 or 2-4 is a huge point in the season. Everybody
knew that before the game and we came out with too tight of hands,” he said. “But we loosened up and battled back.” Joel Henry sparked the comeback with four goals and two assists and Scott Ranger had two goals and three helpers. Cory Conway had a goal and four assists, Cody Bremner had a goal and three assists and Jordon Sealock, Kyle Hofer and Ratcliff were the other scorers.
GAME ON … Nanaimo’s next game is Sunday (June 17) when it hosts the New Westminster Salmonbellies (3-3) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena … To see more action photos from Sunday’s game against Burnaby, visit www.nanaimobulletin. com/sports and www.twitter. com/BulletinSports … This article was first published online Sunday night. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Pirates win three of four at stadium BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
As the competition in the premier league improves, so do the Nanaimo Pirates. The Hub City Paving Pirates (21-5) won three out of four B.C. Premier Baseball League games at Serauxmen Stadium on the weekend. Nanaimo swept the Coquitlam Reds on Saturday by scores of 6-1 and 3-1, then edged the Abbotsford Cardinals 1-0 on Sunday before dropping the weekend finale 4-2. Taking three out of four is fine, said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “Am I happy losing the last game? I want that fourth game, and so do the kids; their heads are down,” he said. “But once the week goes on they’ll understand that was pretty successful.” The homestand got off to a strong start as pitcher Luke Skingle mowed through the Reds’ lineup en route to his league-best seventh win. Skingle threw a complete game, allowing only three hits while striking out 11. Brady Rogers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the offence and Brendan McCarthy and Ben Dunbar also went 2-for-3. The second game was more intense, as two Reds coaches were ejected, one for arguing balls and strikes and the other for arguing following a strange play in the outfield on a bobbled catch. ◆ See ‘BALL’ /29

Ball team jinxes pitcher, still wins
◆ From /28 Justin Clarkson hit a single and a double, Braeden Mousseau reached base twice and Bryan Odgers picked up the win on the mound in a complete game. In Sunday’s early game, Colby Morgan ended up just a couple of outs away from a no-hitter after his teammates jinxed him by talking about it. Morgan improved his league-leading earnedrun average to 0.33 as he gave up two hits in a complete game. “Colby was outstanding,” said Doug Rogers. “He figured out a way to get guys out without his best stuff and that’s a real key component in the maturation of a pitcher.” Morgan said he was
able to hit his spots. “Nor mally my change-up’s my go-to pitch but it wasn’t working, so I just spotted up my fastball and that was working today,” he said. Dunbar and Griffin Andreychuk doubled back-to-back to provide Morgan with enough run support. In the finale, Clarkson was tagged with the ‘L’ and Alex Rogers threw six innings of shutout relief, allowing just two hits. Andreychuk had an RBI double and Crosby Rushton had a hit and two runs scored. GAME ON … The Pirates play the Victoria Eagles on the road Thursday (June 14), then travel to face the Okanagan Athletics. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Clippers acquire power forward the Rivermen’s most improved player at the team’s year-end awards banquet. Clippers general manager Mike Vandekamp said in a press release that he is very excited to add Playfair to the lineup. “He is a big, strong, power forward who will add to the competitive nature of our team,” Vandekamp said. “He is a hard working, physical player, who will have a strong presence both on the ice and in our dressing room.”
