Building blocks Pitt Meadows elementary Grade 5 student Nevan Teng builds a house-car during the last meeting of the school’s Lego club, which is run by parents, on Monday. Teng spent his spring break at a camp where he learned how to make stop-motion movies using Lego. The club helps students learn to work together and develop problem-solving skills. The club is seeking donations of old Lego sets, even ones with missing pieces, as well as assembly books.

Some on Maple Ridge council want to hear what Smart Centres has to say, which would allow the company to make its case for developing in the Albion flats. The company last week made an opening offer to swap its land west of 105th Avenue and Lougheed Highway for District of Maple Ridge land on the east side of 105th Avenue. Tuesday evening, council was to decide whether to direct staff to begin those talks. Coun. Michael Morden at least wanted to hear what Smart Centres has to say. “I think it merits having a discussion,” he said Monday. “It’s a necessary step that we need to go through.” See Albion, p11

investigating similar incidents in Mission, Port Coquitlam and across the Fraser River in Langley. Necropsies done on cats killed in November 2011 and March 2012 found the injuries were caused by a sharp instrument, not by a predator. The SPCA isn’t ruling out that a coyote could have caused a few of the deaths, because attacks can look similar. But it fears many of the felines died at the hands of a disturbed person. Cat heads have been found outside a school, placed on a person’s

porch and in a plastic bag. A tail was found under a missing cat poster, while another was tacked to a fence. Those acts are unlikely to be the work of a coyote or dog, Chortyk said last week. “At this point, we just don’t know if it is one person – we are expanding the investigation next week,” she added. “We do have to be careful about how much information we share or we will jeopardize the investigation.” See Cats, p11

Dave’s World comes to an end Family is planning a big celebration of his life by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

M

arian Albert and Dale Alexander remember the day they took their brother Dave down and the destroyed Dave’s World. It was a January 1998, about 2 a.m., and it seemed like a foreign army had invaded. “You couldn’t have dreamed it up from a movie, it was so bizarre,” recalls Marian. “It was like there was an invasion of another country going on. “It was the worst nightmare I’d ever seen.” How could this happen in Canada, she asked herself. Searchlights seared the night along the sealed off Lougheed Highway in Whonnock. A bus load of police rolled up and descended from River Road above, on to the old gas station site at 269th Street that had become a sprawling outdoor museum, or junk collection – depending on your point of view. Police secured the scene, enforced a court order, then brought in the excavators, clearing the site within hours. The night raid culminated a growing antagonism between the District of Maple Ridge, which wanted the roadside attraction (or distraction) cleaned up and Dave Alexander – whose interests ranged from poetry to butterflies, old tools and old toys, and history – moved out. Dave’s World had become a place for tourists, for kids to drop by and see how previous generations played, and for truckers to honk at as they drove by what became a milestone signifying the entry to Maple Ridge. The place was so popular your arm would get tired waving at all the honking motorists, recalled Dave’s brother, Dale, during a visit Friday to the overgrown site. His roadside emporium has had become an embarrassment for Maple Ridge, which was growing up and trying to take its place in Metro Vancouver’s world. After 14 years, hardly any trace of it remains. Trees have overtaken was a parking lot, and tall grass and shrubs cover the rest. Dale can barely place where everything used to be. But it still remains empty, not used by anyone, points out Marian, as she sat on a concrete barricade where Dave used to display his old Tonka toy trucks. Dave Alexander, who was living in a mobile home in Silverdale, just past the Mission-Maple Ridge border, died last Tuesday at age 65. Alexander, a tall, large man with long hair and long white beard, had heart surgery a year ago, although the cause of his death is not yet known, according to family. He’s survived by his daughter Karma, and brothers and sisters Patty, Gloria, Marian, Roy and Dale. “He wasn’t in good health,” said his niece, Sheri Albert. While outsiders could have seen him as an eccentric hoarder, his brother and sister knew the real Dave: Dave, the non-conformist, who didn’t back down; Dave, who twice ran for mayor of Maple Ridge; Dave, the gregarious big guy who loved people and artifacts and education and books and, above all, history. “He was a showboat,” said Dale. “Very much a people person. “He wasn’t shy.” According to Marian, Dave amassed a collection of keepsakes because he couldn’t bear to see them buried in a dump. Among his favourites was collecting old tools, butterflies, antique dolls, red “Flyer” wagons, and cow-

boy stories. At one point, he taught poetry in a night school class in Coquitlam. “He loved education. He loved books,” she added. Sometimes, he made the old curios himself, such as the furry ‘Muffalope,’ which stood outside on the highway. “When he found something old, it was a treasure from the past. He read constantly, and it was always history.” One of his rituals was his morning breakfast at Bruce’s Country Market, where he breezed through crossword puzzles. Then it would be off to the Ridge Meadows Recycling Depot to look for more treasures. Kim Day, executive-director with the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society, remembered his visits. “He was one of our regulars – a regular shopper.” Alexander would pick over the bits and pieces that are for sale in the Re-used Store at the depot, “looking for treasures,” she added. Then he’d put them on display at Dave’s World for everyone to appreciate. He was also an easy hit for the big city TV stations. He once told human interest TV reporter Mike McCardell that a contraption

for winding up barbed wire was for combing Alexander’s long white beard, a tale that McCardell bought for a while. “That’s what he loved to do. He just loved to make people laugh. “He loved people and if anybody needed help, he’d give you the shirt of his back,” adds Marian. The 1998 raid had Dave and Dale facing charges of resisting arrest. Dave also faced an assault charge. The judge didn’t buy it, however, after seeing the police’s own video of the demolition, and there were no convictions. “There shouldn’t be any police involved here. This is really getting to be a fascist town,” he told The News then. It was only after the District of Maple Ridge bought the property a year later that Dave had his final notice and had to leave the property. The eventual closure and the dispersal of his treasures and livelihood took its toll. “It was his life,” said Dale. Without the store, Dave was out of the limelight and missed the usual chatting with people. Sue Schulze, at the Whonnock post office, just above where Dave’s World was located,

knew him for 25 years and used to see him every couple weeks, such as last week, when he picked up his mail. She remembers the night police came. She hasn’t noticed any difference in the area from when the collection was there and the following years when the lot stood empty. “Dave was Dave.” A celebration of Dave’s life is being planned by the family, if they can find a suitable location for the event to accommodate the crowd of people who’ll likely attend. Dave’s sister Marian said the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since word of Dave’s death got out. “It’s just been overwhelming,” she said Monday. Marian has been hearing from people around the province in locations where she didn’t know Dave had been. “And never a bad word. It’s, ‘He either helped me out’ … It’s unbelievable.” The family wants to organize something around Dave’s birthday, July 12. “Maple Ridge was in his heart. He moved there and he never wanted to leave. “We’re going to do one big party for Dave. I know he’ll be there, for sure.”

couver to the doors of the secretary to the fisheries minister in Maple Ridge. Forest Ethics Advocacy covered the outside of MP Randy Kamp’s office Friday with paper fish and messages for him and his government to reconsider changes that would eliminate broad protection of fish habitat. The government instead said it just wants to protect commercial, recreational or aboriginal fisheries. “If you aren’t protecting the fish that are on different parts of the food chain, it’s going to affect the commercial fishery. It’s a really short-sighted approach.” The changes are designed to make it easier to get approval for the Northern Gateway pipeline, he added. The major change to the Fisheries Act is part of Bill C-38, the huge omnibus bill that includes the federal budget. Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield’s office in Fredericton, N.B. also had his office covered in fish. Jolan Bailey of Forest Ethics said the changes to the act are bothering a lot of people.

He disagreed with the lack of debate over the changes and having them lumped into a big budget bill. “It’s really over-riding the democratic principals that underline Canadian democratic society,” he added. The protest, though, came too late. Kamp said Bill C-38 will get third reading by this week, after the 800 opposition amendments are voted on and defeated by the Conservative government. By late next week, it should be in the Senate, soon to become law. “We think it’s time to move this forward and begin the process and send them off to third reading,” Kamp said Tuesday. The changes to the Fisheries Act, he added, were debated for 20 hours in a special subcommittee and that the government tabled in late April. He said policies in the act introduced in 1986 and 1998 speak to focusing on fisheries and their habitats, rather than fish, so the legislation is just enshrining that. “When you focus on

these fisheries … as it still will say in the act, that in order to address the significant threats to fisheries, you need to protect their habitat, and that’s what we’ll be doing.” Kamp said the Bailey Fisheries Act has grown and broadened over the years beyond just fisheries. “This allows us to focus our protection where we think it should be.” He said that municipalities were on the subcommittee and that they want clarity on when the act applies and when it doesn’t. Currently, under the Fisheries Act, any change to a stream that contains fish requires authorization from the ministry. Under the new law, only streams connected with aboriginal, commercial or sports fisheries will require approval for any changes. “They’ll [cities] know that certain undertakings, certain projects, certain water that won’t be subject to the prohibition … if they’re minor with no risk attached to

it. “Right now, if there’s a body of water, and there might be a fish, even if it’s not a fish that anyone ever fishes, the act requires us to go through the authorization process with the municipality. “We think this will be good for municipalities to know more clearly what their obligations are,” Kamp said. The changes to the laws all fit in with the Jobs, Growth and Prosperity focus of the budget bill. He said the new changes won’t make it easier to build pipelines because those lines will be crossing streams connected to aboriginal, sport or commercial fisheries. Changes to the section dealing with harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fisheries habitat will be decided later and approved by cabinet once more definitions are in place. “Not everything comes into force at royal assent but just about everything.”

SUV blasts through Maple Ridge house People often complain about motorists speeding through their neighbourhoods. Residents along McClure Drive near 106th Avenue though, especially Karen Rogers, may have a case. Rogers moved into her home in the 24600-block of McClure Drive on Feb. 24 – the same day a teenage driver came barrelling down the hill and around the bend, into her front yard, narrowly missing her garage by a few metres. Friday, her garage wasn’t so lucky. At about 3 p.m., a dark-coloured Chrysler Aspen SUV came barrelling down the hill and around the bend, careered over a neighbour’s driveway, plowed through a cedar hedge, flew over a planter, then plowed into the side of Rogers’ garage, before exiting the other side. The female driver wasn’t injured. Rogers wasn’t home at the time but was on scene shortly after, surveying the damage. According to RCMP, the vehicle ran into the gas meter, causing a gas leak. But firefighters shut off the supply before any fire started. The vehicle missed the corner of the garage, and instead smashed into the middle of the wall before coming out the other side. Bystanders watching the clean up said traffic often speeds on the sweeping bend along McClure. “It’s like a little race-

way,” said Diana Moric who lives nearby. Crossing the intersection at 106th Avenue and McClure is dangerous. “It’s like, ‘run for your life’ because it’s a blind corner. People are going fast.” She said a roundabout or stop signs should be installed at the intersection. “Something that’s going to slow the traffic. There are so many kids. “So lucky nobody got hurt.”

Man stabbed Shoppers at Meadowtown Centre were treated to a strange sight Thursday evening as a B.C. Air Ambulance swooped down on to the parking lot and scooped up a 60-year-old man who’d just been stabbed. Ridge Meadows RCMP say the man was on the Golden Ears Way overpass, south of Lougheed Highway about 7 p.m. when he was stabbed. He made his way to a nearby liquor store in the mall, where police were called. His injuries are described as “non-life threatening.” Police arrested a 25-year-old woman who was with him on the overpass. “The victim and suspect know each other, and this did not endanger the safety of our community,” said Insp. Dave Fleugel. “Our officers got to the scene as soon as they were notified, and got this under control

right away. We will now put this matter before the courts.” The suspect was held overnight and appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court today.

Woman arrested A 21-year-old woman from Maple Ridge was arrested Sunday after she crashed a stolen

pickup truck. A police officer with the RCMP Lower Mainland District’s police dog services was patrolling Lougheed Highway around 10 a.m. when he saw a Chevrolet pickup near Laity Street. He tried to stop the truck, but police allege the driver accelerated, drove through a red light and hit two parked

cars. The woman was arrested following the crash. The officer soon discovered the pickup truck had recently been stolen from Port Coquitlam and was seen driving through a residential property on Mountainview Crescent in Maple Ridge. Police also allege the

Omnibus raises fears The Conservative government is set to pass Bill C-38, an omnibus budget bill which includes amendments and changes to many statutes. This has prompted a massive backlash from a number of groups, notably environmental groups. One aspect of their protest was the voluntary blacking out of a number of web sites on June 4. While some of their rhetoric is overblown, it is puzzling why a majority Conservative government feels it needs to proceed in this way. If it wishes to amend specific statutes, why not do so, without packaging a huge variety of changes in one bill? The Conservatives got used to doing this in their five years as a minority government. It was one way to keep at least one opposition party on side — put something in the budget bill that they wanted, and they would vote for it. It was an understandable tactic. The government had to compromise to the degree that it would propose legislation that one of its opponents would back. In fact, the Conservatives did have to go to the polls in 2008 and 2011 after it became clear that no opposition party was willing to back them any longer. Now there is a majority government. No longer does the government have to keep one opposition party on side. And that’s fine. The parliamentary system is an adversarial one, with government and opposition on different sides of almost every issue. That’s why such omnibus bills don’t seem to make sense. All they do is hamper the public from paying closer attention to what the government’s plans are, and at the same time, raise fears which, in many cases, are exaggerated or non-existent. If the government doesn’t want to spend too much time on any given bill, it can invoke closure. There is no longer any stigma about doing so, and the public recognizes the need for the government to be able to enact its plans after there has been reasonable time for debate. It seems that, with some moves like this omnibus budget bill, the Conservatives are deliberately provoking their opponents. While there may be a desire for political vengeance, they need to remember that their majority was granted to them by voters in 2011, only after a five-year testing period. That majority can easily be taken away by voters in the next election. – Black Press

Goodbye greenhouse gas goals VICTORIA – In February, I asked the question: “Are B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets history?” The answer is contained in a new draft plan from B.C. Hydro on how to meet future power demand. And while it’s not B.C. Views explicitly stated, the Tom Fletcher answer is yes. The draft plan was released in May for discussion purposes, but so far there hasn’t been much discussion. This is surprising given some of the recommendations, such as firing up the Burrard Thermal natural gas power plant more often and buying fossil fuel power from the North American market to keep up to demand. The plan confirms a few things that have been evident for a while. Dreams of exporting B.C. hydroelectric power are gone for the foreseeable future. And with mining ramping up along with natural gas development and population growth, B.C. Hydro now projects electricity demand could rise by 50 per cent over the next 20 years. The emergence of huge shale gas sources in B.C. and across the United States has changed the North American energy picture dramatically, as U.S. electricity producers replace coal by burning cheaper and cleaner gas to ramp up power production. B.C. is

losing gas market share in the U.S., its only export customer for heating fuel and electricity use. Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up considerably by 2020. Premier Christy Clark has a new target for 2020: three liquefied natural gas production lines feeding highpressure tankers at Kitimat, for export to Asia. Not only will B.C. need to buy gas-fired power from outside the province to keep up to industrial and residential demand, but the natural gas industry will need its own new gasfired electricity to produce LNG for export. Natural gas passed forestry as B.C.’s top resource revenue source many years ago. In 2005, the volatile gas price spiked up and produced $1 billion in windfall profits that allowed the B.C. government to buy a rare period of public sector labour peace through the 2010 Olympics. Now a glut of shale gas has pushed the North American price down from its historic range of $4 to $6 per thousand cubic feet to about $2.40. Despite that low price, gas producers in B.C. are going flat out to develop the Horn River and Montney shale gas deposits in northeast B.C. I asked David Pryce, vice-president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, why so much gas is

being developed now. He said producers have made huge investments in B.C. shale gas drilling rights, and are in an international race to supply LNG to Asian countries where the price is currently four times higher than in North America. Whatever the domestic price, B.C. gas producers have to show LNG investors such as Mitsubishi and Korea Gas that they can fill a steady procession of LNG tankers at a competitive rate.

“If LNG doesn’t fly here, B.C.’s gas export market soon evaporates. If LNG doesn’t fly here, B.C.’s gas export market soon evaporates. Currently gas producers pay about $400 million a year in royalties, and that much again to buy up shale gas drilling rights. The industry already employs about 12,000 workers in B.C. The B.C. government has little choice but to redefine its climate targets. Instead of cutting domestic emissions, it will try to take credit for displacing coal power in Asia. Fortunately, B.C.’s main coal exports are for high-grade coal used in steel-making. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com (tfletcher@blackpress.ca).

Just another spin on Albion flats EDITOR, THE NEWS:

Re: What changed in Albion flats (The News, June 8). Here we go again, another spin by Smart Centres. The Agricultural Land Commission has stated clearly to Maple Ridge council that development of the west side of 105th Avenue is not a favourable option. This, however, means nothing to the Smart Centres because now it has come up with yet another really ‘smart’ idea. Here’s how the new conversation goes:

SC: “Hey, how about swapping our 20 acres on the west side for some land on the east side?” MR council: “Oh wow, that sounds really good.” SC: “We’ll have a friendly chat with the fairgrounds people and convince them development is a ‘smart’ idea.” MRC: “Oh wow, that sounds really good.” You see how this conversation goes. like tops so some developer who has a really ‘smart’ idea and can make a bucket load of money. I prefer the idea of maintaining farm land, pristine wilderness and trees so I can continue to breathe. Oxygen is a really smart idea. Maple Ridge could be the Amazon of the Lower Mainland, but the mighty minds of developers and our own council can’t wait to bulldoze green spaces, then pour concrete all over it.

mart. Wow, it’s tough to drive 15 minutes east or 15 minutes west to a Walmart in Mission or Port Coquitlam. No, we want one in our own backyard so we can buy really cheap scrap that’s made by really cheap labour from another country and the money goes into the really rich pockets of one family in yet another country. I guess these developers and even our own council believe we’re stupid. Yep, we here in Maple Ridge like to get sucker punched and spin around

Mosaic applies for development permit City staff are recommending council issue a development permit for four mixed-use buildings in Osprey Village. The permit will allow Mosaic Homes to build 24 more units on four parcel located at the centre of the waterfront community in Pitt Meadows. The four three-storey buildings would house 12 ground-level commercial units, almost double the minimum square footage required by the development covenant. In a report to council, city planner Dana Parr said the proposed buildings on the corner would be clad in brick and are reminiscent of an old

Yaletown building. The other two buildings are designed to look like a collection of townhouses with shops below. Two waterfront lots set aside for a chapel and a restaurant or pub remain vacant. The city said the development of the chapel and pub rest with the developer and no timeline has been set.

New heritage home Pitt Meadows hopes to add the home of one of its founders to the city’s heritage register. The Anderson Park Residence at 12417

Anderson Park home 193B Street would become the sixth site on the registry, which lists properties of historical or cultural significance in the community. Built in 1914, the

wood-frame residence was the first home of William James Park and his wife Mary Agnes (née McMynn). The house was eventually moved to the south side of Lougheed Highway by horses, and was given to the Parks’ daughter Hazel when she married Harry Anderson in 1938. A former reeve, Park was instrumental in establishing Pitt Meadows as a municipality and pushed for its separation from Maple Ridge. Meetings concerning the formation of Pitt Meadows were held in the house.

‘Make sure fairgrounds as good or better’ Albion from front Morden, as do other councillors, wants some resolution about the future of the area. Smart Centres made the offer after the Agricultural Land Commission said it wouldn’t support development of the farmland on the west side of 105th Ave. The company has 20 acres on the west side which it’s offering to the district in return for 17 acres on the east side which currently accommodates the Maple Ridge fairgrounds. If approved, the fairgrounds also would have to move to the west side. Morden pointed out if council approved such a deal, it could mean improving drainage for Steve and John Wynnyk’s 40 acres in the middle of the Albion flats. The farmers say

Expert to being on necropsies Cats from front Dr. Melinda Merck, a veterinary forensic expert, arrived in B.C. on Tuesday and was expected to begin necropsies on the cats Wednesday afternoon. A renowned animal crime scene specialist from Atlanta, Merck investigated the Whistler sled dog killings and helped build a case against NFL player Michael Vick for his involvement in a dogfighting ring. She frequently testifies as a forensic expert for animal cruelty cases around the U.S.

poor drainage resulting from surrounding development has ruined the soil. John Wynnyk also said recently that he wouldn’t support Smart Centres’ proposal. Coun. Corisa Bell is looking forward to discussing the idea of a land swap. “I find the concept very creative,” she added Monday. Coun. Cheryl Ashlie favoured sending the request on to staff. “I’m more inclined to hear them out and see

what staff will come up with.” She also wants to ensure the user groups, such as the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association, aren’t hurt and that any development doesn’t preclude further building eastward along Lougheed Highway. “How do we make sure that the fairgrounds will be as good if not better? “If Smart Centres is coming up with the first piece of the puzzle, it needs to be sure when

the rest is done, it looks like a completed project, not a piecemeal project.” She said when council asked land owners to submit proposals for their properties in the Agricultural Land Reserve, it was to hear their responses to Agricultural Land Commission comments made earlier this year, which said there would be no support of land exclusions on the west side. The process shouldn’t take any more than six months, Ashlie added.

Ridge Baptist church turns 100 By Sheila Nickols

S

tatistically, only three percent of churches in North America survive to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Maple Ridge Baptist Church will be marking its 100th birthday in early July with three days of special events. Joan Newton has been gathering information and photographs to produce an illustrated history of the congregation and its buildings. The book, called Remember the Day – Consider the Years will be available for sale, along with a picture book for children. There was no Baptist Church in Maple Ridge until Owen and Mary Fuller moved here in 1912 from Kitsilano. Along with their friends, the Greenwells and the Hatches, they organized a Sunday school that met in a vacant building. They soon raised enough money to build their first church on Dewdney Trunk Road, on the west side of the entrance to Maple Ridge Cemetery. This early church was a simple white structure with a pointed steeple. On the top was a wooden, hand-carved from a cedar shingle block, with its forefinger pointing

symbolically to heaven. The Baptist congregation soon outgrew this building, so in 1929 and again in 1940 it remodeled, raising the building to accommodate a basement. Meeting spaces, a balcony and the square steeple were added. This building, now a private home, still stands. Two more Maple Ridge Baptist Church buildings were to follow on property at the corner of Lougheed Highway and 6th Avenue (now 222nd Street). The first of these was built in 1949, followed by numerous changes and additions. The second was built in 1982, and extensively renovated in 1999 to its present form. One of the longest serving Baptist pastors here was the Reverend Arthur Haynes, who preached in all three church buildings from 1926 to 1969. He did much outreach work, including members of the Japanese community. His wife Edna did not spend all her time at home, raising their eight children, but “was called on to conduct special meetings, play the organ, teach Sunday school, act as superintendent, hold special Bible classes, work with young people, visit the sick and bereaved, and attend all

FASHION ARDENE

church meetings.” By 1979, more pastoral assistance was required if the church was to continue to grow and prosper. Now the church is served by six pastors and assistant pastors. Summer Bible schools, musical performances and missionary work have been part of its work load. The three-day centennial celebration begins on July 6, when there will a banquet to honor 13 people who have been members of Maple Ridge Baptist Church for 50 years or more (See the list at mapleridgenews.com). On Saturday, July 7 there will be an all day picnic and reunion on the grounds of a church member. Then on Sunday, July 8 there will be a special service, winding up a series that began in May on the history of the Christian church. Extra features will be greetings from all three levels of government, songs by a men’s quartet called the Garden Hill Boys, and video presentation on the history of the church. • For any further information, call the church office at 604-467-9613. Sheila Nickols is past president of the Maple Ridge Historical Society.

Moratorium advised for acquisitions by J eff Nagel Black Press

1999 Cavalier Chevrolet Cavalie

2010 Ford Expedition Max

Metro may freeze new park purchases The planned Experience The Fraser trail network and other pledged upgrades to regional parks may be in jeopardy because Metro Vancouver is too cashstrapped to pursue them all. The regional district board has been advised by staff to declare an 18-month moratorium on the acquisition of new parkland while they reconsider how to finance the regional parks system and keep up with the demands of a growing population. Surrey Coun. Barbara Steele said there’s tremendous pressure to develop the Experience the Fraser trails along the length of the Fraser River in the Lower Mainland. “There are huge expectations from Hope to Squamish and beyond and now there’s no money to do it,” she said after Metro’s environment and parks commit-

tee was briefed on how park demands have outstripped funding. “We can’t do the Experience The Fraser with Metro Vancouver leading the way if Metro Vancouver doesn’t have any money.” Heritage buildings are also at risk, Steele said, noting Metro was supposed to work with the City of Surrey on a plan to refurbish the historic Gerow barn in Tynehead Regional Park. “It’s not going to happen at all because there’s no money,” Steele predicted. “If you put this stuff on hold, it’s going to disintegrate before our very eyes.” The challenge is Metro allocates just $3.7 million a year to buy new parkland, an amount that has remained almost unchanged for 20 years while the price of real estate has soared dramatically. Metro officials have a list of 210 target properties worth an estimated $600 million they’d like to buy that would add 3,000 hectares of new parks or major expansions to existing parks. They have a second list of 341 other parcels

and parks committee hasn’t yet approved the proposed moratorium – directors said they need more time to consider the implications. Several said they see no way property taxes could be raised to funnel more cash to park acquisition, given the current pressure on taxpayers. But Metro may look at selling less essential pieces of existing parkland in order to pay for the acquisition of pieces considered more environmentally sensitive or critical for recreation. It’s also been suggested that Metro doesn’t need to own every park it operates if it can work with cities or other partners. Ushering more business ventures onto regional parks is considered another option, although that strategy has so far failed to generate much new income. Metro is also under pressure to develop park trails and infrastructure at sites where land is in place – such as Surrey Bend, Colony Farm and Sumas Mountain – but there may be pressure to postpone much of that work as well. “We build expectations faster than we build trails and facilities,” Royer said.

considered key missing pieces to existing parks that span 2,500 hectares and are worth an estimated $500 million. Spread out over 30 years, that $1.1 billion in proposed acquisitions would require an annual acquisition fund of $37 million a year – 10 times the current amount. But officials fear a jump in interest rates coupled with older owners opting to sell may soon result in a surge of target properties going on the market, increasing the temptation to buy parkland lest it be snapped up for development. Gaetan Royer, Metro’s manager in charge of planning, environment and parks, said parks acquisition is severely underfunded, forcing the region to either downsize its plan or find more money. “At this rate of spending it’s going to take 300 years to get to where the plan says we’re going to be in 30 years,” he said. Royer recommended staff continue work to buy some missing pieces for existing parks from the second list, but shelve all other acquisitions until a major review is finished that priorizes target properties. First-time offender jailed for role in riot Sentence a sign prison coming for most convicted Stanley Cup rioters by Jef f Nage l Black Press A one-month jail term handed to a 20-year-old Surrey man for his role in last year’s Stanley Cup riot is bad news for the dozens of others still awaiting their day in court and hoping to avoid prison. Emmanuel Alviar pleaded guilty this spring to charges of mischief and participating in a riot, saying he was sorry for helping stir up mayhem downtown last June 15 after the Vancouver Canucks lost the Cup to the Boston Bruins. It’s the first sentence for a Cup rioter with no prior criminal record and it’s being interpreted as a sign jail terms will be inescapable for most who follow. Alviar, a drywaller and former choir singer, turned himself in to police early in the investigation after videos circulated online showing him pushing against a car that other rioters then destroyed, and later throwing a barricade at a window. Provincial Court Judge Reg Harris took into account his remorse and guilty plea, but said the size, duration and damage done by the riot – as well as the fact it was the second one in Vancouver involv-

ing a hockey crowd – required a substantial deterrent. Harris also gave Alviar 16 months probation, 150 hours of community service and ordered him to write apology letters to Vancouver’s mayor and chief of police. Alviar’s lawyer said the sentence sets a probable floor of jail time for similar first-time offenders and all but rules out conditional sentences, which he had asked for on behalf of his client. SFU criminologist Rob Gordon agreed. “I think it’s more likely than not,” he said of jail for the rest. “It depends on who they are and what they’ve been doing in the past.” The only other rioter sentenced so far was Coquitlam resident Ryan Dickinson, who got 17 months in jail less three and a half months credit for time served, but he had a past record of assault. Gordon noted some of Alviar’s behaviour worked against him – he was seen at three different places during the riot over a period of hours when he was supposed to have been chaperoning four 14-year-olds. But he said other accused rioters who didn’t come forward early face long odds of avoiding jail. “Those who did not put their hands up, those police had to chase, and those with prior convictions will be facing longer periods,” he predicted. “I think a lot

Crown prosecutors have charged 104 accused rioters so far and police are seeking charges against at least 120 more. The largest number charged so far – 44 – are from Surrey, followed by 38 from Vancouver, 27 from Burnaby, 19 from Richmond, 14 from North Vancouver, 11 from Delta, eight in Langley and seven each in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge. Among them: Michael David Anderson, 21, Jeff Post, 20, Connor Epp, 20, Andrew Glenn Cuthbert, 20 and Jordan Houde, 18. “By the time we are done, we expect that we will exceed 300 persons charged with over 900 criminal charges,” Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu said. “We believe this is the greatest number of people charged with a crime arising from one incident in Canadian history.” Chu called for public help in identifying 10 worst unidentified rioters through photos posted on the riot investigation website at riot2011.vpd.ca.

Leah Faulkner and Barb Kark are the brains behind The Olde Farmhouse, which hosts its first vintage market in Maple Ridge on June 23. The market will feature 32 vendors selling everything from vintage and shabby chic to farmhouse and handmade.

Lots of treasures in Olde Farmhouse junk” left on the side of the road. “It helps keep the landfill free of stuff,” says Kark, who restores the antiques and junk yard finds with Faulkner. After filling their homes with stuff for over a decade, Faulkner and Kark decided to turn their hobby into a business a year ago, christened – The Olde Farmhouse.

ne man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That’s an adage Leah Faulkner and Barb Kark take to heart. The friends have a penchant for things that are rusty, dented, roughed up and well loved. “We’ll take it off your hands,” says Kark, who doesn’t hesitate to knock on the door of a stranger if she spots something she likes discarded in a yard. “Ninety per cent of the time people are only too happy to get rid of it.” Faulkner got her junking bug from her mother-in-law Bertie while living in Manitoba. She met Kark 13 years and bonded over a similar interest in all things old. The weekend after they met, Faulkner and Kark went to the Cloverdale flea market. It was a trip that cemented their friendship, an outing that sparked many annual “junking journeys” to source wonderful collectibles, unique primitives and vintage items. Together the pair have been collected farmhouse treasures during road trips to Spokane, checked out numerous garage sales and rooted through many piles of “wonderful funky

“You are bringing something that was loved into your home.” Barb Kark, The Olde Farmhouse

People would come over and ask where we got this, says Faulkner, who has a soft spot for old cupboards. “A lot of the times you grab stuff and you don’t know what you’ll end up using it for,” explains Faulkner, who often transforms items into something completely differently from what they were originally built for. She’s turned a mirror into a chalkboard and used antique door knobs as hook to hang jewelry on. The friends say junking can be a full-time job – they are con-

stantly looking for something new, or rather old. They’ve also hooked their husbands, in-laws and siblings into junking and don’t hesitate to send them out on shopping missions. My husband was driving other day and sent me a photograph of something dumped on the side of the road, Faulkner says with a laugh. Both say there’s something special about owning an item – be it a chair, cupboard, lamp shade or bowl – that’s been used by someone else. “It’s nice to know where it’s come from, what they used it for,” says Kark, reminiscing about a stool she got from an old barn that was built by a man for his wife to make it easier for her to milk cows. “You are bringing something that was loved into your home and it makes it warm. It is not necessarily shiny and brand new.” Faulkner, meanwhile, loves the story behind the antique cupboard she has in her kitchen, that was once used to store pies. Every time she opens it, she thinks about the pies that were stored inside and the children who must have tried to stick their fingers in them. “It’s just the way that it makes your home feel,” she says.

impression, technical skill, level of presentation, grades relating to the artistic category, personal resume and planned attendance at a post-secondary institution. The $1,000 scholarships were awarded for music, dance, theatre, visual arts or media arts and a new category, literary arts. “To be the visual and media arts scholarship recipients means the world to me. Not only will it help me financially, when going to BCIT this October, but it gives me the self confidence to peruse my future field of graphic design,” said scholarship recipient Natasha Kloyber. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Scholarship program has been offered to students in School District 42 for many years and since 2005 the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Arts Council has provided more than $40,000 in support to students. “When I began playing piano at three years old, I had no idea of the dedication, love, and hard work it would require to take me to the place I am today. Music, and the piano, has become my passion, and to be chosen as a recipient for this scholarship means a great deal to me,” said Claire Oliverio, who plans to begin her studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and eventually transfer to the University of British Columbia or University of Victoria. “It was so exciting and such an honour to receive this scholarship, both from a graduating student’s perspective and from a writer’s perspective. I’m so grateful to have been chosen as a recipient; this scholarship will be a big help in enabling me to pursue my dreams and postsecondary education,” said Melissa Haavisto, who is already enrolled to study graphic design at Kwantlen.

Recipients: • Natasha Kloyber, Thomas Haney secondary – visual and media art; • Melissa Haavisto, Maple Ridge secondary - literary arts; • Spencer Dodd, Garibaldi Secondary – technical theatre; • Julya Rempel, Garibaldi secondary – dance; • Claire Oliverio, Maple Ridge secondary – music.

Mountain Festival needs help 12 people needed for planning committee Eric Phillips hopes he can revive the Maple Ridge Mountain Festival. He’s hoping it won’t disappear like several other events that have bitten the dust over the past decade. “We need some people,” says Phillips as he reminisces about the festival that was a 10-day event when it first started. “We don’t want to see it die because the community needs festival’s like it.”

After fifty years of good morning and good night kisses…

The Mountain Festival Society has been the force behind three community wood carving projects, but a lack of interest means there will be no event this year. “A lot of people want to come out and watch it, but to get 12 people to help plan it is impossible,” says Phillips. The society needs to form a planning committee to help organize the next event. • Residents of Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows who are interested in helping can call Eric Phillips at 604-465-6795 or email ephillips6795@shaw.ca.

Original musical at the ACT Take a trip into a make-believe world in a production being staged at the ACT this week by the Bergthorson Academy of Music’s musical theatre program. Andora’s Knot is an original musical script about a group of interesting creatures who love to have fun, and their interaction with something they’ve never seen before – humans. Performed by talented local students, and written by Rayne Beveridge and Clark Schaufele, the musical is set in a hidden forest beyond the reach of cities and towns. The music loving Squiddles live with the illustrious Beetle Brigade and are harried by the troublesome Gnomes, who want nothing more than to cause trouble for the Squiddles. • Andora’s Knot plays the ACT at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 16.Tickets are $8.50 or 4 for $30 in advance and $9.50 at the door.

Roughnecks take gold in Surrey contributed The ’02 Ridge Meadows Roughnecks spring hockey team went in on top and came out on top at the Valley Cup Tournament in Surrey last weekend, as they won gold as the top-seeded team in the tourney. The Roughnecks plowed through the round robin games to finish with a 3-0-1 record, moving on to defeat the B.C. Blackhawks 5-3 in the semifinal game. That set up a championship matchup with the Pro4 Panthers. Tyler Crowe gave the Roughnecks a 1-0 lead just eight seconds into the gold medal game. Carter Sheridan added the winning goal, with the insurance marker by Vincent Timperio. The finishing blow was dealt by Dawson Ignatieff, who scored in the third period to give the Roughnecks the 4-1 win and the tournament title. The defensive unit of Graydan Carr, Andrew Chua, Oliver Para and Edward Riddell were solid throughout the tourney, limiting the Panthers to 17 shots in the final, while adding an assist each. Jordan Kujala and Ben Williams also had assists, while centre Carson Fairley contributed with determined effort at both ends of the rink. Linemates Sheridan (nine goals, two assists), Evan Vasarhely (five goals, four assists) and Kyle Sackman (three goals, seven assists) combined with a total of 30 tournament points. Goaltender Justin Falconer played strong in net, finishing with a save percentage of .941 in the final, and had a tournament goals-againstaverage of 3.83. • See team photo online under sports @ mapleridgenews.com

Burrards still winless after seven games by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Maple Ridge Burrards stretched their winless streak to seven games last weekend as they tied the Burnaby Lakers 9-9 Friday night on the road before falling to the Langley Thunder 13-10 Sunday night at home. The Burrards are 0-6-1 this season, sitting in last place in the Western Lacrosse Association standings with one point. While the Maple Ridge Burrards have seen the return of much of their lineup in the past few weeks, with arrival of Riley Loewen, Simon Giourmetakis, and Jarrett Davis, still missing is the Burrards’ leading scorer last

season, Curtis Dickson, who is still out with a shoulder injury sustained while playing in the NLL. The Burrards were at least able to earn their first point of the season Friday night with a 9-9 tie against the Lakers. Maple Ridge looked poised to win the game after scoring six unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead late in the second period. However, the Lakers bounced back with six goals of their own, forcing the Burrards to score a pair of late goals to send the game to overtime with the score 8-8. Brandon Bertoia drew first blood for the Burrards in overtime, but Burnaby’s Casey Jackson scored shorthanded with just 23 seconds to go to even things up and deny Maple Ridge its first two-point game of 2012.

Derek Lowe led the Burrards in scoring with two goals and four assists. The Burrards were up against the white-hot Langley Thunder Sunday night. After starting the season 1-2, the Thunder have won four straight to pull into a tie for first place in the WLA with the Victoria Shamrocks. Langley got out to an early 4-0 lead before Randy Daly got the Burrards on the board 13 minutes into the first period. The Burrards managed to chip away at the Thunder’s lead in the second period, tying the game 6-6 with five minutes left in the middle frame.

That prompted Langley to pull goalie Steve Fryer and replace him with Brodie MacDonald. The move sparked the Thunder, which went on to score seven goals to Maple Ridge’s two over the next 20 minutes, giving Langley a 13-8 lead with five minutes left on the clock. A pair of late goals brought the Burrards within three, but it wasn’t enough for the win. Burrards back-up goalie Blake Duncan allowed 13 goals on 40 shots in net. Aaron Pascas led the Burrards in scoring with five goals.

THE NEWS/seniority Plan with seniors, not for seniors by Ar t Kube contributor

It’s nice to be remembered. And it’s for a whole week, not just 15 minutes. The provincial government proclaimed last week as Seniors’ Week. Political leaders issued statements about the contributions seniors have made to the province’s economy and society as a whole. A few of us old folks were talking about it the other day. We’re honoured to have a whole week. Someone noted that mothers and fathers only get a day, and we qualify for those days as well. It’s always welcome when people say nice things about you – especially when they do so before you’re time is up. But we also came to the conclusion that something is missing in the discussion of seniors’ issues. The key point is that we’re still alive, still as active as we can be, still anxious to help build a better province. There’s a large demographic

shift underway. The people of B.C. and Canada are getting older. It creates both opportunities and challenges. It also creates a real need for political leadership. We have a hodge podge of approaches to aging. Responsibility is divided among a host of federal and provincial government ministries. Local governments also have a role in creating age-friendly communities. There’s no doubt it’s easier said than done, but what we really need is a comprehensive, coordinated approach to this demographic change. The driving force should be to help seniors stay active, healthy and independent. Too often, government programs treat symptoms rather than reach for the real goal. They put a cast on the broken leg, rather than working to prevent the fall. They provide inadequate home care and home support services, forcing many seniors into residential care homes, or even acute care beds. It doesn’t make sense economically or socially. See B.C., p31

Looking for New phone line to help seniors the perfect gift resolve health care issues for Father’s Day? contributed

The provincial government has launched a new toll-free phone line to help seniors and their loved ones resolve health care-related issues. The new Seniors’ Health Care Support Line allows seniors and their families to report concerns about their care, and have them handled in a respectful and timely fashion, according to Health Minister Michael de Jong. “Dealing with B.C.’s intricate health-care system can be confusing,” he said at a press conference last week. “Many seniors do not possess the technical knowledge to navigate the system with computers. We are making it easier for seniors and their families to get the help they need through the Seniors Health Care Support Line.”

Seniors can also call the line if they are having difficulty accessing health-care services. The toll-free phone line is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by calling 1-877-952-3181. “We want seniors with health-care concerns to be heard so their issues can be properly addressed and resolved in a timely fashion,” said Ron Cantelon, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors to the Minister of Health. “Through this new provincial toll-free phone line, we are giving seniors and their families direct support to resolve concerns regarding care.” Other ways seniors can get help with resolving care concerns include speaking with their health-care provider, contacting the Patient Care Quality Offices and independent review boards, health authorities or the relevant health professional colleges, Cantelon added.

B.C. faces demographic shift B.C. from p30 Other countries have faced demographic shifts. We’re not the first. Their solutions are quite different from what we see here today. They focus on independence. Home care. Home support. Independent living arrangements. Opportunities for social contact. And public pensions sufficient to lift seniors out of poverty. We don’t claim that age gives you wisdom, but it does give you experience. Seniors are an asset, not a liability, to society. We have

no desire to be put into expensive facilities where we can vegetate and wait to die. We want to fully participate, advocate on public issues, fulfill our responsibilities as citizens, and help to create a more civil society for our children and grandchildren. And we must be involved in planning our own futures.

Give the gift of Care! Consider a gift package of a 2-hour visit twice a week for a month from a loving Caregiver. Give him attentive visits, delicious meals, and light housekeeping, of course – but what does he love to do? We’ll help him set goals to improve his health and independence. • Caring companionship • Fun outings and community experiences • Delicious meals and light housekeeping • Getting to/from appointments • Physical activity • Groceries and errands It’s a great way to introduce a little help around the house for someone special.

Call today to ¿nd out more! (604) 468-CARE (2273)

It is with the greatest sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Ruth Saunders announces that our beloved Nana passed away peacefully on June 5, 2012 in Port Coquitlam, BC. She was 105. A long time resident of Hawthorne Care Centre, Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Cliff in 1994; her son Allan in 2006; as well as her brother Allen and sisters, Winifred, Nellie and Doris. Born in Montreal, Quebec on May 7, 1907, Ruth was the second eldest of seven children. Times were tough and when Ruth was ten years old she quit school to help her mother raise her younger siblings and then trained to become an exceptional seamstress. Ruth had an adventurous spirit and at the age of 23 left home by train to find work in Jasper, Alberta. It was here Ruth met her soul mate, Cliff. They were soon married in a small church in Jasper and together they moved to New Westminster, British Columbia where they lived for 30 years, raising 2 children. They spent their early retirement years in Garden Bay, BC enjoying the cabin cruiser they built together. Later, they moved to Mission and finally to Maple Ridge. Ruth moved into Hawthorne Care Centre in 2003 where she was always looking forward to the next shopping or casino outing. Ruth was a talented seamstress and a life long member of the Rebecca Lodge. Her love of gardening kept her active for many years and later she enjoyed beadwork, reading and crafts. Left to cherish the memories are her brother Mickey Hinks; daughter Helen Quist (Byrd)., grandchildren Glen (Dee), Gary (Laurie), Robin (Jurgen), Brenda (Glenn), John (Dana), and Robert (Debra); greatgrandchildren, Jeff (Michelle), Cheryl (Brett), Mitchell, Christina (Joey), Tanya, Jeremy, Christine, Elizabeth, Justin, Tara, Alicia, Virginia and Dustin and also greatgreat-grandchildren Lia and Marley. Our sincere appreciation is sent to the staff at the Hawthorne Care Centre, for their care of Ruth. They became her extended family as she felt very secure there, calling it home. To honour Ruth’s wishes, no service will be held, cremation by the Memorial Society of BC. Should friends desire, donations in Ruth’s name, could be made to the Heart of Hawthorne Foundation or a charity of ones choice.

Good bye Nana. Rest in peace. You have touched so many in your life and will always continue to be remembered, loved and cherished.
