Garbage blamed for deaths of three bears By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff

G
arbage left out by residents is being blamed for the deaths of three bears, shot by conservation officers this week. Two adult bears and one cub have been shot in Fernie over the last week, after they became used to foraging for food in garbage cans. First, a sow was shot on Friday night in Elkview Drive. The bear had been
seen over the last few weeks in the Ridgemont, downtown, and Elkview areas, getting into garbage in people’s homes, as well as birdfeeders. “This sow had been showing signs of aggression, hanging out in cul de sacs in the afternoons, chasing cats, and even turned on someone and their dog,” said Conservation Officer, Frank de Boon. “It wasn’t safe to have her in town.” The sow had two cubs with her. Conservation officers
shot one on Monday night and conservation officers are still looking for the other one. “Unfortunately these cubs are not going to survive alone, and have been taught that foraging in garbage is how to find food,” said De Boon. “And zoos are not interested in them because black bears are so common. So unfortunately they have to be killed.” Another male brown coloured black bear was trapped and destroyed in
Mount Trinity on Sunday. He had become very bold, wandering through people’s yards during the day, getting into garbage over the last week. De Boon is also concerned about a two-year-old black bear with an ear tag, seen in the Ridgemont, downtown and airport areas over the last week. De Boon says he has come from Alberta and hopes he will move along before needing to be destroyed. “Try to scare bears away if
you can, so they don’t hang around people,” said De Boon. “The idea is to make life in town as uncomfortable as possible for them. This is a lot of bears to be seeing at this time of the year, and partly it is because of the late, wet spring, but mostly it’s because people are not managing their garbage properly. “Help us keep bears wild.” It is also very important to call in sightings to 1-877-952-7277.

Tim Hortons sends kids to camp By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
T
wo Elk Valley kids will get to go to camp this summer after another successful camp day at Tim Hortons in Fernie. Volunteers from the community helped out on Wednesday, making coffee, cleaning tables and serving at the drive-thru window. All coffee sales went towards the Camp Day cause. In total, over $3,700 was raised which will send Isabella Dicken Elementary School kids Taylor Robson, 10 and Dakota Armstrong, 10 to Kananaskis Children’s Ranch from August 10 to 19 this year. Kristine Hovind-Pelletier, owner of Tim Hortons in Fernie, said the day was really successful. “What a mess the weather was! But we actually still did quite well considering we couldn’t do a couple of our larger outdoor fundraising events because of the rain,” she said. Camp day is the one-day a year when Tim Hortons restaurant owners across Canada and the United States donate every penny from
coffee sales to the Tim Horton Children's Foundation. Last year, camp day raised more than $9.7 million.
The proceeds send kids, who could otherwise not afford it, on a camping trip of a lifetime.

Elkford’s ‘brand champion’ resigns By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
A
fter eight years of holding the position of Chief Administrative Officer, Corien Speaker has resigned from the District of Elkford. Speaker officially announced her resignation on Wednesday, June 6, having accepted the CAO position at the District of Squamish. She will begin her new role with the municipality on July 3. Since the commencement of her employment with the District of Elkford in 2004, Speaker has been a “brand champion” for the District’s award-winning re-branding process, helped shape a new tax sharing agreement in the Elk Valley, and has guided the creation of an Official Community Plan that has been recognized by the United Nations for its climate change adaptation strategy. “We are proud of the accomplishments that Corien has achieved during her time with the District,” said Elkford mayor
Dean McKerracher. “She has helped our municipality stand out and continuously strive for greatness. She will be missed.” Speaker is a certified general accountant and holds a diploma in local government management from the University of Victoria. She has worked in local government for 21 years, and was the chief financial officer for the City of Prince Rupert before coming to Elkford. She helped guide the Prince Rupert community through a financial meltdown, when its local pulp mill defaulted on its taxes. During that time, Speaker became Prince Rupert's acting CAO. The CAO plays a vital role in steering a municipality and is responsible for the hiring and firing of staff and ensuring that council's goals are carried out. At this time, the District of Elkford has not made any decisions regarding the process for replacing the CAO.

Young woman in serious condition after car wreck By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
A
young woman is in critical condition in hospital in Calgary after suffering serious head injuries in a car wreck. The girl was in a vehicle travelling northbound from Sparwood towards Elkford at around 6:29 a.m. on Friday, June 9, when the vehicle lost control and rolled just outside
Elkford. There were three young men in the vehicle, and the one woman. All suffered injuries apart from the driver. One man suffered a badly broken arm and was taken to hospital in Fernie. The RCMP and BC ambulance responded to the scene. The woman was taken to hospital in Fernie, then airlifted to Calgary.
“The occupants of the vehicle were all young adults, coming from a house party,” said Cpl. David Williams from the Elk Valley RCMP. “Speed and alcohol are being investigated as possible factors, and the matter is still under investigation.” The RCMP did not release the names of those in the vehicle, out of respect for the family of the woman, who remains in critical condition.

It amazes me that people living in the Elk Valley still don’t seem to realise how important it is to do these little things to ensure the bears are not attracted into town to forage. Maybe the deaths this week of two, probably three by the time this is printed, bears will help people take notice.
These bears have been wandering round for weeks, feasting on the garbage and bird feeders in people’s backyards. The snow line is still fairly low, so it’s so much easier for them to just come and grab what they can from our bins. The sad thing is, once they have learned that this is an easy way to dine for free, they will probably not stop. And in the case of the bear with cubs, she has taught her offspring that this is the best way to feed too. They will never know any different, and will have the same fate as their mother. Death by conservation officer.
By living in this community, I think we have a responsibility to protect the environment and animals that were here long before we were. It doesn’t take much, just a few simple rules to follow to avoid attracting bears to town. Don’t put your rubbish out early, don’t feed the birds, pick up the apples that fall off the tree, and report bear sightings. Also, and this is really important, pay attention to what your neighbours are doing. If they are struggling to manage with getting their garbage out on collection day, or can’t pick up those apples, why not offer to help them? You will be helping them out, making sure your neighbourhood stays safe, and also helping those bears stay alive. What better way to show you truly love the animals?

Letters to the Editor Save the bears
by Angela Treharne
How much do you love animals? So much that you like to feed those cute little hummingbirds with a nice sweet mixture that brings them buzzing to your garden? Well, birds aren’t the only animals that are going to come to feast. Bears can smell that stuff a mile off, as well as the garbage you leave out the night before collection day, in case you forget in the morning.

Imagine the excitement, joy and awe of my 16-year-old international student from Germany looking out our window and seeing a mother bear and her two cubs in our backyard. He managed to capture incredible video of the two cubs playing with each other – it looked like something out of National Geographic! Then imagine the disbelief and horror when hours later that same bear was shot dead in our neighbour’s yard. This bear was lured by a can of garbage in my neighbour’s driveway. I say lured because this person has a spotless driveway and yard and has never in the five years I have lived here, had a can of garbage sitting in his driveway unless it’s garbage day. Minutes
after this bear got into his garbage he came out of his house with a phone to his ear smiling from ear to ear and scared the bear up a tree. The conservation officer arrived seconds later. We (my son, my international student and a friend) were across the street watching all of this unfold. The conservation officer came over to me and said that he was going to have to kill the bear and if I didn’t want to watch I should go inside. I asked him why they didn’t relocate them and he said they would just come back. I said, what about the cubs? And he said he would have to shoot them too. He said this bear was seen chasing animals and showing signs of aggression in other parts of Fernie and that’s why he was
killing them. This bear was a mother with cubs! Of course she’s going to try to protect them! When this bear was in this man’s garbage he came out and chased her up a tree! She showed no signs of aggression! Why did my neighbour have a can of garbage sitting out in the middle of his driveway on a Friday afternoon? Garbage day in our neighbourhood is Tuesday. Why did the conservation officer arrive seconds afterwards? This was all a setup to kill this bear and I am appalled. There is a bear trap set up across the street for the cubs. As of Sunday they have not been captured. They are too young to survive on their own. Needless to say, my weekend was spoiled by the totally
unnecessary and entirely preventable killing of this beautiful bear and knowing that her cubs are out there somewhere starving. Not to mention the one
horrendous memory an international student will take with him back to Germany. Crystal Perry Fernie

Letters to the Editor continued from page 6 Response to Bennett In his column, ‘Western Resource Extraction Motion’ of Thursday, May 31, EK MLA Bill Bennett tells us that his ‘blood was boiling’ and that he had to go ‘political’ over comments he attributed to Federal Opposition leader, Thomas Mulcair. Mr. Bennett criticized the Provincial Opposition and the Speaker of the BC Legislature for ‘preventing’ his motion on Mulcair ‘from being debated by private members.’ The reason is simple. The content of his motion was factually incorrect. Mr. Mulcair, as Mr. Bennett’s motion claimed, did not refer to resource extraction as ‘a disease.’ This
point was clarified by BC Liberal MLA Douglas Horne who quoted Mr. Mulcair’s remarks in full. What Mr. Mulcair did was to speak of ‘Dutch disease,’ a phrase coined by ‘The Economist’ in 1977, referring to the negative consequences for a nation’s manufacturing sector of too-rapid extraction of natural resources. Mr. Bennett is a politician and going ‘political’ is what politicians do. However, he should, as a politician, not only take more care over a task as important as formulating the wording of a parliamentary motion, but also avoid inaccuracies when going ‘political’ in constituency newspapers. J.C. Vallance, Fernie.
Electing the waterworks Invermere mayor Taft objects to Christy Clarke’s appointments to elected government positions for Jumbo, but he did not object when all the RDEK mayors were appointed to elected positions for the West Fernie Waterworks District. As previously noted, the RDEK refers to the 1955 contract as though it is still in force but has not mentioned the 1975 contract that replaces the requirement for the WFWD to have a renewal fund for the water system when needed. Over the last 36 years, the City of Fernie has received between two and three million dollars (in 2012 dollars) which mostly went to pay interest on money borrowed to pay capital costs of replacing or extending the City’s
water system. If that money had gone into a renewal fund it would have earned interest and would be considerably more than three million dollars. The Province and the RDEK are helping the City take the money and run. If WFWD residents accept the RDEK proposal, they cancel the contract and give away that money. On May 4 the RDEK Directors changed hats after their Board Meeting and convened a WFWD Trustees Meeting at 10:43 a.m. It took five minutes to: re-elect Mike Sosnowski as Chair; adopt the agenda; adopt the minutes of their February 4, 2011 Meeting; approve the unaudited WFWD Financial Statements for 2011; adjourn at 10:48 a.m.; then go out to lunch and let Mike get things done. ‌About Giving First Responders Peace of Mind‌ with MLA Bill Bennett
1. Legislation passed in the BC Legislature will give all emergency workers access to information about potential disease exposure that will allow them to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. 2. Paramedics and fire-fighters in particular agonize about what to do to protect themselves and their families, after contact with bodily fluids. They had no right to demand a blood sample. Under this new legislation, they will have that right. Private information will be protected. 3. First responders put their lives on the line for us every day. It is important that we support them in every way we can. Thanks to the Elkord, Sparwood, Fernie & Cranbrook firefighters and paramedics for working with me and my colleagues on this initiative. s usual there is much happening including the Quality of Life Survey that is being mailed out so as to update the Index created last year. Bonus draw prize of either a ski pass or 50-inch TV screen if you enter the draw and fill out the survey. Please make time to fill it out and return the survey. I have been attending numerous events giving speeches and also judged the Miss Elkford Ambassador pageant. These were fun, however I have attended many meetings about important issues affecting our town. Add to that the many concerns expressed by residents; from loud noise at night, back yard fire pits, whistle cessation, affordable housing, lack of directional signage, i.e. for getting to places and for identifying our parks and buildings, downtown vandalism and numerous complaints about potholes. Fifth Avenue is slated to be redone this year and many potholes will be filled beginning this coming week. A working group has been formed to look at the Resort Municipality Initiative Funding to look at what projects will receive assistance but Council will still have the last word as to where funding is directed. Many people commented on wanting the Miners Walk cleared during the winter months. This will now happen as the society has raised enough money to provide this service.
A nuisance bylaw has been passed to combat downtown vandalism and staff have been directed to bring back a report on how to implement cameras, also wattage will be increased in the downtown light posts. There is a Liquid Waste Management Plan being worked on for managing storm water and sewage that is required by the Ministry of Environment. An open house was held last month so the public could familiarize itself with what this means. This three step plan is now in its second stage of evaluating and selecting the projects, programs, policies and practices to successfully address the issues and challenges of managing this in an environmentally and socially responsible way. A response was received from the RCMP Superintendent regarding lack of cells for use in Fernie. There are no plans to either refurbish the cells or replace the detachment building. A response is being sent stating Council’s strong objection to this. The final draft of the budget has passed, staff worked diligently to bring the tax increase from over five to less than four percent. It was determined that staff budgets all had to cut back a little to make up the nearly $74,000 shortfall, this they were able to achieve. CBT has funding for a new sub region initiative that Mike Sosnowski, Lois Halko, Dean McKerracher and I are joining forces on to see what type of
project can be achieved for our region as a whole. We will be meeting with CBT in early July to discuss this. Council has sent letters to neighbouring communities stating that if interest is there to host the 2016 or 2018 Winter Games it will have to be done as equal partners as it is believed no single community has the necessary 2,500 volunteers required to do it alone. Work will soon begin on updating the Official Community Plan by the Whistler Centre for Sustainability, members from the community will be part of the advisory committee so if interested please send a letter stating so. This is a most critical topic , the OCP is what guides the way Fernie looks and grows, please become involved as this will affect the future of our town. Council sent a letter to the Ministry of Environment stating their support of the Bear Aware educational program that had been denied funding. We have now been informed that the province will provide support for 40 communities in B.C. to assist with education to decrease human-bear encounters this year. Council had received a letter from PARTY program coordinator Mary Jane Leppard stating that this program would no longer take place due to lack of space at Elk Valley Hospital. Having attended this program several times I am aware of the positive impact it has on participating youth and will work to get it back.

Bear Corner By Kathy Murray Elk Valley Bear Aware
G
arbage, birdfeeders and pet food are killing Fernie bears and will attract deer, bears and cougars into town! Respect for our environment, keeping our garbage indoors, stopping using bird feeders during bear season, managing compost, cleaning barbecues and feeding pets indoors will result in a safer and cleaner community for everyone, wildlife included!
Fernie • Unsecured garbage and birdfeeders have resulted in the death of a sow and two cubs and another bear over the weekend. Please take a moment and look around your property and remove anything that may attract bears, (garbage, birdfeeders, pet food, dirty barbecues.) The death of these bears does not solve the problem. As long as there is easy food available, other bears will move in. It is up to us to keep our community clean and safe for people and bears. There is also a black bear with an ear tag in town. This bear has come from Alberta, a harsh reminder that relocation is not a solution. Bear-proofing your property is! Help your neighbours, family and friends become Bear Aware • Bears in pursuit of an easy meal may damage
property, break into homes or in rare cases cause injury to people and unfortunately must be destroyed. Properly storing garbage and other items that attract bears is a proven method for preventing human bear conflict. By encouraging your family, friends and neighbours to bearproof their properties, we will all benefit from a safer community and our bears will have a chance to live.
Sightings Fernie • Bears reported getting into birdfeeders then running towards kids on Park Avenue and Mt Klauer Street. Bears accessing garbage and birdfeeders on Fourth Avenue, Mt Proctor, Mt Minton, Mt Trinity, Elkview Drive, Elkview Crescent, Ridgemont Drive, Rocky Mountain Village and Isabella Dicken Elementary School.
Sparwood • A grizzly bear was seen on Highway 43 by the new golf course.
South Country • Bears reported accessing birdfeeders on Tie Lake road. What should I do if there is a bear in my yard (urban situation)? First, ask yourself “what has attracted the bear to my yard?” Second, call the
Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277. Do not let the bear feel comfortable in your yard. If you are concerned about confronting the bear, make a loud, preferably low frequency noise (e.g. bang pots together) from the safety of your house. A bear in your yard should never be a welcome sight. You must take quick action to eliminate attractants after the bear is gone. A bear that finds food once is likely to return to that spot. A returning bear will learn that the food is no longer available and will seek a meal elsewhere if you eliminate the food source. Never approach a bear, even on your property. Do not allow anyone else to approach the bear. Ensure that there are no people, especially children nearby. A frightened black bear will likely look for a tree to climb. A sow with cubs will stay in a tree longer than a single bear. Keep people away from the base of the tree. Be patient and give the bear time to leave. Please report wildlife incidents when there is a threat to human safety to the Ministry of Environment 24-hour hotline at 1-877-9527277. For more information on updated bear activity and bear safety please visit bearaware.bc.ca and elkvalleybearaware. wordpress.com or visit us on Facebook.

CONSTRUCTION SITE CLEANUP
Effective Wednesday, July 4 until, and including, Friday, August 31, 2012
The City of Fernie wishes to remind owners and contractors working on construction sites that it is your responsibility to keep the streets at and near your work site free of dirt and debris. Per Building Bylaw #1946 an owner of property is responsible for the cost of repair or damage, including the placement of any material, on City property. Special attention should be given to mitigate dust and muddy conditions that could carry onto public streets and sidewalks. Measures such as laying down crushed gravel in low lying areas to prevent water collection where vehicles and equipment are working and regular street sweeping greatly reduce the amount of dust, dirt and debris on public roadways. You are reminded that street cleaning of roadways at your construction site is not an expense that will be borne by taxpayers of the community. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Fawning Season Residents are encouraged to exercise both caution and common sense this spring, as the fawning season approaches for deer. Late May through June is historically the time of year does give birth to their fawns. Does will drive away their offspring from the previous year and look for a secluded place to give birth. Deer have one or two fawns per year and triplets do occur once in a while. It is quite common for does to leave fawns hidden while they forage in the area, returning occasionally to nurse. If you come across a fawn, it is best to leave it alone. It is also important for residents to remember that does with fawns can be quite aggressive. Please do not approach deer or their fawns. If your presence creates a response from the deer, like a change in stance, ear position or physical movement, you are too close. Give the deer plenty of space to either move or leave the area. Do not walk closer to the deer, choose another route. Be sure to walk your dog on a leash and be ready to let go of the leash if a deer attacks. Any acts of deer aggression where public safety is at risk should be reported.
Let’s work together to keep Elkford Wild at Heart
Bear Aware and the District of Elkford would like to take this opportunity to remind residents and visitors to ensure they bear proof their properties and prevent conflict with bears. Spring is the best opportunity we have to prevent bears from learning bad habits by ensuring that our properties are free of attractants (garbage, dirty BBQ’s and bird feeders). If bears get the upper hand early by feeding in our back yards, it will be hard to make them wild again. After a long cold winter and high snow pack, bears are just starting to emerge from their dens. The cold and wet spring has delayed new plant growth. Bears will typically feed on plants, berries and bugs; however, they are natural scavengers and will travel great distances to find food. At home: Please ensure that garbage containers supplied by the District of Elkford are kept indoors until collection day and all other bear attractants are secured.
To report an incident to the Conservation Officer Service, please call 1.877.952.7277.
Hiking and Biking: Make noise to warn bears of your presence, watch for fresh bear signs and travel in groups in daylight. If you meet a bear, back away slowly and leave. Do not run. Give the bear space to escape.
To report an incident to the District of Elkford, please call 250.865.4000.
Please report all bear sightings and incidents to the Ministry of Environment 24-hour hotline at

Conversations with Mary - Lillian Dyck By Mary Giuliano Contributor
U
ntil a couple of years ago you could find Lillian Dyck volunteering in the local Sally Ann thrift store. Nothing unusual about that except that Lillian is about to celebrate her 100th birthday. Born June 30, 1912 in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Lillian was a middle child of 13 children born to William Henry Ross and Mary Matilda Powell, both born in Nova Scotia of Scottish heritage. She is the only living sibling left of her family. Lillian attended school in New
Glasgow until 17 years of age when she left home and moved to Saskatchewan. She found work in a café and that’s where she met her first husband Abe Burden. They had one son, Ken. The marriage wasn’t a happy one and soon the couple split with Ken going with his father. Lillian met her second husband, Abe Dyck, in 1942 while still living in Saskatchewan. The union produced five children, Carol, Bob, Harry (who died at birth,) Donna and Mary. The couple lived on a Mennonite farm as Abe was a German Mennonite and also in Coaldale and Taber

before moving to the Old Loop area of Corbin in 1949 where the family lived in old range cabins that used to be Canadian German prisoner of war camp housing. Life at Old Loop was harsh. No electricity, water and only wood for heat. Snow was melted over the stove for water, in summer water had to be packed from a quarter of a mile away. Lillian and the kids bunked in one cabin, Abe in another. Bunk beds lined one wall of the cabin, in the 1952 winter Bob recalls that “there was 35 feet of snow on the level; we had to tunnel out of the house. It was bad, in mid- January of ‘53
it was 75 below, then it warmed up to 55 below. We never missed a day of school either. I recall going outside without a coat at 35 below. We were a lot healthier back then.” When four-year-old Bob contacted Polio, he was completely paralyzed, the doctor wanted to put him in an iron lung but they refused. Instead, the Sister Kinney treatment of massaging the muscles was used and in three months he could walk again. He says “Mom wheeled me to the hospital in a wagon.” The family was now living in Middletown where the kids attended school in
Natal. Abe worked for Crowsnest Pass Coal Company and in 1967 lost his right arm in an accident at the Tipple in Michell. They lived behind the coke ovens in a house situated along the hillside. Their next move was to Natal to the front apartment of Ada Petovello’s house with Ada and her husband living in the back area. Snow was boiled in an oval copper container to provide warm water to fill the tub. “Everyone had a bath in the same water.” By 1954 Lillian and Abe had parted ways and she found work in the Alexander café in Natal waiting on tables. Conversations with Mary - Lillian Dyck Continued from page 12
Those were the days when six hotels were in the Natal and one in Michel. Carol, who was now 14, also found work there and Bob, 13, cleaned the cafĂŠ after it closed down at night. Lillian spent most of her life working hard as a waitress and cleaner, finally quitting at age 63 only because she had developed back problems. “It was a tough life growing up, a struggle all the way through,â€? says son Bob, then adds, “Mom is the best woman on earth, she is a great mother, she did all she could bringing us up by herself, we all turned out fine.â€? When asked about older photos, “no photos taken, we couldn’t afford it.â€? Lillian couldn’t
find a place to rent in Sparwood after Natal went down so she moved to Fernie where she has lived ever since. With a history of Salvation Army (her mother was in uniform and so was she) during her years in Michel she attended the United church as there was no Salvation Army there, in Fernie she joined again. She loves gardening, knitting and crocheting. Also canning and making jams. “She taught all of us how to cook and bake, I can remember her baking 24 loaves of bread a week. She has a green thumb, she can take a dead plant and bring it back to life, says Bob. Lillian is friendly and outgoing, she never has a bad word to say about anyone and has always helped those less fortunate than herself.
Four years ago for her 96th birthday she was finally reunited with her first child, her son Ken whom she had lost touch with when his father had taken him away. It was quite a tearful reunion. Ken will also come to celebrate her 100th birthday. Lillian has 10 grandsons and 11 great- grandchildren. Still feisty and independent, Lillian lives on her own in her house. On a comment made that she might live to be 120, Lillian replied, “Not 120, I’m shooting for 150. Lillian is proof that despite all hardships thrown at you, as long as you keep a good attitude life can be long and fulfilling. Congratulations on your 100th Lillian, and best wishes for many Lillian and family. more birthdays.

Popular classical music will strike a chord Fernie Chamber Orchestra brings a night of classical music to the Arts Station By Rebecca Edwards Contributor
P
opular Viennese waltzes, a Mozart flute quartet and traditional folk dances are on the varied program at Fernie Chamber Orchestra and Trinity Mountain Ensemble’s Evening of Classical Music at The Arts Station next Saturday, June 16. Fernie Chamber Orchestra features 10 local musicians who meet each week to enjoy playing a variety of music styles together. Next Saturday they will play Blue Danube Waltz by Johann
Strauss, Fantasia on Greensleeves by Ralph Vaughan-Williams, the famous Pavane by Gabriel Fauré, and arrangements of two traditional Polish waltzes. The orchestra’s players are Yolaine Hames (flute and musical director), Kerri Holmes (violin and orchestra librarian), Kumi Yamamoto (cello), Rebecca Edwards (violin and viola), Virginia Robinson (violin), Debbie Gould-Hawke (violin), Daniel Edwards (violin), Dawn Deydey (clarinet), Jess Wallman (clarinet) and David Bird (flute). Hames, Holmes, Edwards and
Yamamoto also make up the Trinity Mountain Ensemble, a flute and string quartet that is available to play at weddings and also played at the opening of 901 Spa and Picnic earlier this year. The ensemble will play Emperor Waltz by Johann Strauss, Mozart’s Flute Quartet in C Major and Gershwin’s Lullaby. Last December Fernie Chamber Orchestra played a sell-out Christmas concert with Fernie Community Choir and earlier this year they performed at Isabella Dicken Elementary School, teaching the children about all
the different instruments of the orchestra, and even getting some students involved. This year the orchestra was grateful to receive funding from the Kootenay-Columbia Cultural Alliance to pay for sheet music, instrument rental and for group and individual masterclasses with musicians from the I.D.E.A.L. Society in Jaffray. • Fernie Chamber Orchestra

hink your garden is pretty spectacular? Then enter it in Fernie’s gardening contest and you can win prizes and bragging rights! Get planting and weeding because gardens will be judged between August 13 and 18, and deadline for entries is August 7. The Fernie Chamber of Commerce have created the Fernie In Bloom contest to foster civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification of Fernie through community participation. The contest is open to any resident or business in Fernie, and there are many different categories, from storefronts to hotel gardens to veggie patches. “This programme is all about getting people involved and
helping to create a partnership between the Business Community and the City of Fernie,” said Sarah Parry, Manager of Fernie Chamber of Commerce. “The competition criteria has expanded at the recommendation of the Fernie Garden Centre and we have also included a category for the Community Garden plots and residential dwellings. “I am sure you have many friends and acquaintances who have great gardens. Encourage them to register. I come from a town in the UK that has won the Britain in Bloom prestigious award on a number of occasions. The town could look really beautiful and create a strong sense of pride.” There is a $10 entry fee. Entry forms are available from the Fernie Chamber of Commerce. All proceeds will go to the Community Garden Centre.

Summer Safety
cordially invites you to celebrate the completion of our office renovation.
Summer is a good time to kick back, relax and have fun. If alcohol is part of your summer plans keep a few important points in mind. These points can also be used year round to avoid potentially harmful situations. KNOW YOUR LIMIT – monitor your drinking. Spacing drinks, by keeping at least an hour between standard drinks (341ml of 5% beer/142ml of 12% wine/43ml of 40%). Adult women are recommended to limit intake to 3 standard drinks, while adult males are recommended to limit intake to 4 standard drinks in one day. If you are driving, not drinking is always safest. AVOID MIXING – Mixing drugs and alcohol can have devastating consequences. Illegal drugs are not monitored; therefore it is difficult to know what you are ingesting. Consult your physician when considering mixing prescription medication and over the counter medication with alcohol. Often medication and alcohol do not mix. KEEP AN EYE ON EACH OTHER – remember safety in numbers. Do not allow your friends to go with people you do not know or trust. Ensure at least one person in the group is sober to drive home. BE PREPARED –carry a cell phone and let people know where you are. Extra clothes, food and water are always a good idea. East Kootenay Addiction Services Society has sponsored this column. Rain doesn’t dampen spirits at Relay By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
C
h i l l y t e m p e r a t u re s and drizzly rain didn’t stop supporters raising over $57,000 at this year’s Relay for Life fundraiser on Saturday. Cancer survivors and caregivers took part in the victory lap first, then enjoyed the entertainment all day long while teams
walked and ran. There were 15 teams that took part, and more than 128 total participants. Team PEAK was the top fundraising team, raising $7,000, and Jessica Simard was the top fundraising individual, raising $3,640. The headshave raised $900. Local bands and musicians kept the crowds entertained all day.

Learning to look after our streams By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
K
ids at the Fernie Academy were playing in a giant sand pit this week, while learning a little about rivers, streams and erosion. The Stream Trailer rolled into town Monday, loaded with sand and a selfcontained tank for pumping water. Staff from the program demonstrated erosion by carving different kinds of stream channels in the sand to see the effects of different flow conditions and the impacts of different kinds of land use. The Stream Trailer is a program by Mainstreams, a trans-boundary British Columbia Society with a mission to collaborate with other organizations and individuals using science to deliver water education, monitoring, and aquatic habitat improvement projects within the Columbia River Watershed. The trailer headed off to Isabella Dicken Elementary School the next day. They have also visited schools in Cranbrook and Kimberley. “It’s a great chance to teach kids about the importance of vegetation in our streams,” said program coordinator Patty Kolesnichensko. ”They learn about erosion hands-on and get to see and feel what erosion does.” If you would like the Steam Trailer to visit your school, visit www. mainstreams.ca for more information.

Canada Day Kids Tent!
he Fernie Childcare Society will once again be teaming up with the City of Fernie department of recreation to provide a kids tent at the Canada Day festivities. Crafts, face painting, and infant play area will be available. As well, the Society will be selling drinks as a fundraiser for the non-profit, charitable daycare.
The Childcare Society is a volunteer board which serves to meet the needs of children and their parents by providing licensed, affordable child care services in Fernie. The society was formed in 2007 and the daycare opened it’s doors in September of 2009. Located at 1101 2nd Ave, you can “hear” the thriving business playing in the backyard. The centre is open 8 am to 5:30 pm five days a week. If you have toys in good condition that would benefit from a home at our infant/toddler centre for kids 0-2.5 or our early childhood centre for kids 2.5-5.9, please feel free to drop them by the centre during operating hours. The Society is very grateful for all the monetary and donations-in-kind that the daycare has received from generous members of the Elk Valley community and businesses in it’s first three years of operation. A $10,000 donation from Teck last year allowed the centre to make many improvements. While both our daycare centres are presently full with waiting lists the board is looking into expansion. If your family requires childcare and you are interested in volunteering for this initiative please contact the Fernie Childcare Society chair: fcsboard@gmail.com.

he Bull River Shooters Association held its annual invitational match over the Victoria Day weekend at our range near Ft Steele. Fifty-four competitors, men and women from their teens through seniors, fired 15,760 rounds (5,000 more than 2011) of ammunition (plus practice rounds and shoot-off rounds) at steel targets representing chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams. What a great turnout for our club’s 25th anniversary!
The sport of metallic silhouette shooting started in Mexico and involves two styles of rifles in both .22LR calibre and high-power (6mm and bigger). Competitors shoot from an unsupported standing position and targets are 40 to 100 metres away for .22’s and 200 to 500 metres for high-power rifles. Thanks to the efforts of club members the range and grounds were in excellent shape and the fine weather made for great shooting and fun camping and camaraderie. New friendships were forged and old rivalries were
rekindled, supported by a fantastic barbecue Saturday night. Shooters travel from the North West Territories, all over BC, Alberta, Montana, Idaho and Washington. Some families enjoy the annual weekend as a reunion of sorts, travelling to visit and compete against each other. A particular highlight was the group of six shooters who drove all the way from Yellowknife, NWT, including three young teens and a university student, friends travelling with two dads! One can only imagine the conversations and adventures!

Getting teed off for Elkford’s tots By Jennifer Cherney Elkford ECD
O
n Friday, June 1 the Elkford Early Childhood Development Committee held their second annual Tee off for Tots charity golf tournament, held at Mountain Meadows Golf Course. We welcomed 19 teams from all over the Elk Valley, who came to help raise funds for Elkford’s 0-6 year old programs and events. The tournament began with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. and the format was nine holes of Best Ball. The teams braved the rainy weather for a chance to win $20,000 on a hole in one, a longest
putt, longest drive and closest to the pin prizes. The participants ranged from avid weekly golfers to our once a year supporters. After a hard nine holes golfers were invited back to the clubhouse to enjoy a steak cooked by our ECD husbands, and potatoes and salad sponsored by the Elkford Motor Inn. After dinner prizes were awarded for golf standings as well as plenty of door prize draws and even a 50-50 draw for over $220. A Texas Hold’em poker tournament sponsored by SMS Equipment rounded off the evening and provided fun hours after golf! Golfing was not the only reason for participants to show
up. The players supported the Early Childhood Development Committee by bidding on the large variety of silent auction items. Over 50 local businesses in the valley donated fabulous items to be bid on. The golfers and volunteers got busy bidding on everything from pottery, to hotel stays, to rounds of golf and photography sittings. Over $2,000 was raised alone on the silent auction! Private teams and local businesses such as Teck, The Free Press, Bearspaw Contracting, Overwaitea - Sparwood, EKCCU, SMS Equipment, Elkford Curling Club, Wapiti Ski Hill and the District of Elkford all helped raise funds by entering
teams of four, donating auction items or contributing financial contributions. The ECD committee is proud to say that we raised over $7,000 this year that will be put back
into the community of Elkford in supporting 0-6 year old programming and events. Thank you to all those who helped make the day a success at Elkford’s only charity golf event.

Sparwood Fellowship Baptist Church decides to replant By Pastor Ron Rutley Sparwood Fellowship Baptist Church
U
nless one is already deeply immersed in church-speak, this headline probably makes little sense. The Bible frequently uses agricultural metaphors to describe the life of Christian discipleship, for both individuals and also corporately for churches. When a new church is established it is called a church plant. The ministry, work, and service that goes into starting a new church is called church planting. Along the same lines, a replant is when an existing church decides it needs to renew and re-establish itself.
In agricultural there are many different reasons why replanting might be necessary. Any gardener would also say the same. Sometimes a hard frost damages the plant. Sometimes drought or soil conditions affect growth. Other times, the farmer recognizes is simply better to sow a field with a different variety of the same crop. There are times reseeding occurs right away. Other times the soil needs to lie fallow for a season. Likewise for churches, there are many different reasons to decide to replant. Moving forward, we believe we can best serve as a vibrant church for the community of Sparwood though
replanting. Our final service before beginning that process will be June 17, starting at 10:30 a.m. This will be a time to celebrate the past, but also a time to look forward to the future. After June 17, there will be a time of planning and preparing for the future. During this fallow season there will be no Sunday morning worship or other ministry programs. In the interim, we encourage people to worship with our sister church in Fernie, Mountainside Community Church. We also look forward, when the time comes, to inviting you to worship with us once again here in Sparwood.

In Loving Memory of: Michael Voth Feb. 8, 1994 - June 16, 2011
The East family would like to thank friends who sent special thoughts and wishes for Mary’s 95th birthday. Also thank you to those who attended the open house.
We think of you in silence We often speak your name But all we have are memories And your picture in a frame Your resting place we visit And put flowers there with care And no one knows the heartache
Personals
But you’re always in our hearts And we see you everywhere Love from Grandma Becky & Grandpa Norm Michael Voth Feb. 8, 1994 - June 16, 2011 We little knew that morning, God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Love Grandma Aggie & Bob Auntie Teresa, Uncle Dale, Aunt Ronda, Cousins Danielle & Miranda

VERHAEGHE: April 5, 1985 – April 30, 2012
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin, Ryan Verhaeghe on April 30, 2012. Ryan is survived by his mother Melody Verhaeghe (Terrell Stanely), his father Terry Douville, his sister Amanda Shaw (Patrick Friesen) and nephew Zedekiah, grandparents Cathy (Frank) Gentile, Russell Verhaeghe (Revi) and great grandmother Elenor Verhaeghe. He also leaves to mourn his passing his aunt Merrilee Verhaeghe (Jim Lozza) and cousin Joey Verhaeghe and 2nd cousins J.J. and Justice, and his aunty Candace Verhaeghe (Chris Doering) and cousins Megan and Ashley. Ryan was preceded in death by his great grandfather Maurice Verhaeghe, his uncle Michael Verhaeghe and his great grandmother Ellen Smith (Dean Smith). Ryan loved his family tremendously and had a heart as big as all outdoors. He’d help those he could when called upon; shoveled snow, mowed lawns, chopped wood and did whatever was needed without hesitation. His engaging smile and laughter could warm up any room. He was a caring and loyal friend to all who knew him and defended those who were unable. Ryan enjoyed working on and creating original and unique artwork which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A Graveside Service was held at St. Margaret’s Cemetery on Friday, June 8th. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
Cards of Thanks Prayer Holy St. Jude May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world. Amen. Say this prayer nine times a day, and for nine days and remember to promise publication and your prayer will be answered no matter how impossible it may seem by the ninth day. Thank you for the favours, Jesus.

GAUDREAU: Norman Napoleon Gaudreau, born October 2, 1932 in Timmins, ON entered into eternal rest June 3, 2012 at the Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie, BC. Norman is survived by his wife of 60 years and the love if his life, Gilberte “Babette” (nee Mathe) Gaudreau, his two sons: Philippe (Louise Beaumier) Gaudreau and Michel (Louise Allaire) Gaudreau and his loving daughter Jeanne (Heinz) Kraps, grandchildren Natalie (Ian) Clarke and Chantale (Adam) Johnson, five great grandchildren: Kaylee, Dylan, Ashley, Amanda and Kyle, and his one and only beloved sister Pauline Lehoux and her three sons; Dennis, Jacques and Normand. He was predeceased by his father Napoleon (Paul) Joseph Gaudreau, his mother Blanche Jolicoeur Gaudreau, his father- in-law Euclide Mathe and his mother- in-law Jeanne Mathe. Norman’s golden heart stopped beating and his hardworking hands at rest. His working travels took him to most continents. He was constantly seeking to learn, and this was demonstrated when he furthered his education via correspondence; graduating with a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s of Science in construction engineering. Wherever work took him, he always said “If my wife cannot be with me then I won’t go!” He expatriated himself to provide for his family. Norman worked all of his 60+ years of his life to nurture his family and to enjoy retirement with his wife. Unfortunately Alzheimer’s chose our Dad. Norman was a man loved by all. He was warm, kind, soft spoken and well versed in language, a man with a huge golden soft heart, He was always willing to help family and anyone else in need. Norman will be remembered for his satisfied smirk when he looked lovingly upon his family. He will be missed greatly by those whose lives he touched. Babette, Jeanne, Michel and Phil would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Rocky Mountain Village for their tender loving care to ensure that Norman was happy and well cared for. As well we would like to thank Dr. Rodney Geddis. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society on the behalf of Norman Gaudreau. Arrangements entrusted Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
When tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not there to see, The sun will rise and Ànd your eyes all Àlled with tears for me, I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today, While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you, Life at times will catch you unawares but please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name, and took me by the hand. He said my place was ready, in heaven way up above, And that I had to leave behind all those I dearly loved. As I turned to walk away, the tears fell from my eyes, For all my life I always thought I didn‘t want to die. I had so much to live for, so much yet left to do, It seemed so very cruel to me that I was leaving you. Thoughts of all our yesterdays, the good ones and the bad, Are remembered for all the love we shared especially the fun we had. If I could relive just yesterday, even for a short while, I’d say my goodbyes and kiss you, and hopefully see you smile. As the days pass into weeks, don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of me, I’ll be there in your heart. Wishing you were here with us but We’re holding you in our hearts forever Always Dad, Mom & Brother

Couple found safe after three day search By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
Judith Johannson Page 29
RCMP
Crime reports - Pages 16, 24 and 30
A
couple from Fort Mcleod who had been missing for three days, have been found safe after sending an emergency call for help. Police and Search and Rescue in the Elk Valley and Alberta had been searching extensively for the couple after they left for a day trip on Saturday morning and did not return. Their family and friends had not heard from them since they
left. At about 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the Elk Valley RCMP were notified of a radio transmission received from a remote area in Bow River. A woman with a European accent indicated that she and her husband’s car had become stuck, and they could not get it out. Her husband had an injured knee, but otherwise they were OK. The transmission was very broken, and no further details could be ascertained. A helicopter was dispatched to the area,
and located two people confirmed to be Jacob and Anja Oosterwijk, the missing couple. The Oosterwijks were transported to the hospital to be evaluated. Apparently, after becoming stuck, the two were able to locate a cabin with a radio, and make the call for assistance. Shortly after the transmission, and once a narrower area was determined, a police dog was able to locate the stranded vehicle. Jacob and Anja were found safe Tuesday.
TIME IS RUNNING OUT! List your property with us to be included in the Fernie Real Estate Magazine, 2012 Summer Edition.

Family golfing; a new lifestyle I
t’s not so long ago that golf was the reserve of businessmen. But times change and today the number of families playing golf never stops growing. Some clubs are still reticent about opening their doors to women and children but there are a few exceptions including a club in Eastern Canada, the Pinegrove Country Club, founded in 1957. Over the years this club has become more family oriented. Today, 70% of their customers are families. It’s in this way that a young business couple and their three children chose to become members. Hugo and Caroline and their children aged 7 (Kelly-Ann), 14 (Charles) and 15 (Eve) have a shared passion: golfing! All the children have played golf since they were 3 years old. Last year, this club had 42 members aged from 10 to 18 years. These young
people must follow the same rules of behaviour as adult members and have the same responsibilities. For their part, parents appreciate the discipline, ethics and the sense of responsibility which participation in the activities of the golf club bring to their children. The reassurance which a family club gives is very important to parents. The members of the club as much
as the personnel make it their duty to greet and to know the names of every young member and even to take an interest in their activities. A young sportsman like Charles appreciates this environment so much that he spends his Summer holidays, with his friends, at the junior camp reserved for 10 to 15 year olds. He’s on the golf course every morning at 6:30 a.m. As soon as the warm weather arrives, during school holidays, the parents leave their children at the golf club before going to the office. Whilst Charles plays his daily 36 holes, Eve prefers to play 9 holes and then go swimming at the club’s pool with her friends. The young people even have a lounge which is reserved for them. At the end of the day, all the family meet at the club to play a last 9 holes while talking about their respective days.
