West Kootenay has plenty of company in wooing WestJet JIM SINCLAIR Advertiser Editor
The highly successful WestJet has no shortage of communities clamoring to become part of it’s network. There are locations across the country vying, as Castlegar is, to become a base for regular WestJet turboprop service. The present buzz over the possibility of enhanced service here is likely shared with each town and city on the list. Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff has an appointment later this month in Calgary at which he will be part of a group doing its best to sell the carrier on the viability of flying in and out of here. WestJet appears to be one of those outfits that can do no wrong. The image cultivated by the employee-owned carrier is that of an innovator... a comparably informal airline that
places a strong emphasis on value, service and reliability. There are many in this area who would enjoy a relationship with the Calgarybased enterprise. “The regional airline will fly the Bombardier Q400 Next Gen to new cities, existing destinations not currently connected by WestJet and will allow for schedule improvements on certain routes where a smaller aircraft can efficiently provide greater frequency,” the Penticton Western News is quoted in its May 1 issue. Penticton, incidentally is also in the running for new WestJet service. “Bombadier lists the planes as designed for shorthaul routes, with a 70-to-80 seat capacity. According to the aircraft builder the Q400 NextGen radically reduces carbon emissions thanks to its lower overall fuel burn and because

of its new, high tech propeller design and advances in engine technology it reduces community noise pollution. The plane is also touted as being able to access smaller airports that have less runway. WestJet has signed a letter of intent to purchase 20 Q400s with the option to purchase a further 25 aircraft.” Mayor Chernoff confirmed that air service-related concerns are nothing new to the local community. “It’s a long standing issue,” he said on Friday. “I think from the point of view of the West Kootenays this is a huge economic
development tool. What we’re looking for is reliability.” Since issuing an email news release on the subject a couple of days ago, the mayor says communication has spiked in a big way.
“Obviously the launch of the new regional airline has created a whole new level of buzz.” Jen Sanford, WestJet “I’ve been receiving emails from everybody across the region. I’m excited to
see that there’s that much excitement in the community about bringing in another carrier.” He says whether for business or pleasure travel is all about “getting there as efficiently and reliably as possible.” Jen Sanford of WestJet Media Relations indicated from Calgary on Friday that the decisions will definitely be carefully made. “Long before we announced we would launch our regional airline we would hear from smaller communities across Canada that wanted WestJet service,” she explained. “Obviously the
launch of the new regional airline has created a whole new level of buzz, and we’re very excited to see the lengths to which some communities have gone to reach out to us, and of course, we’re hugely flattered.” Obviously, also – a fair number of these communities will be disappointed when the decisions are made. When examined regionally, though, it would appear the West Kootenay airport has a number of selling points for an outfit like WestJet. “We look at the current and past experience with air service,” Sanford contin-
ued. “We look at the local economy and that of the outlying area. For example, are there large industries? Are their employees in the area? “Do they travel as a requirement of their work? We look at both business and leisure travel and we look at both ends of the telescope – so who will be traveling to this new destination? “And will the people who live and work in this area be traveling as well?” The spokesperson said of the whollyowned subsidiary of WestJet, “We’re looking to have, at the end of the day a fleet of up to 45 of these 78-seat Q-400 next generation turboprop aircraft.” The civic leader is of the impression that should they set up shop in Castlegar for the benefit of the wider West Kootenay region, WestJet would be a welcome addition. “For everybody who travels, WestJet it’s a good experience,” said Chernoff. “Like I said, there’s just that excitement in the community. Everywhere you go people are talking about it. “It’s a great initiative for the West Kootenays.”

On Wednesday morning June 6, 2012, at approximately 8:00 a.m., the Slocan Lake RCMP received a report of a vehicle driving into Slocan Lake at the Slocan City Boat Launch. Local Fire Department personnel, Ambulance, RCMP as well as Search and Rescue responded. A car was located submerged in the lake, down from the boat launch. A local tow truck was utilized to recover the vehicle, however, it was unoccupied.
Further searches of the surrounding lake area were conducted. A body was later located under the wharf, about six to eight feet below the water’s surface. The wharf is beside and runs parallel to the boat launch. The body was then recovered but unfortunately deceased at the scene. Witnesses have confirmed with the RCMP that the deceased was the only occupant of the vehicle when the
car went into the lake. The deceased is a local 76 year old male. Next of Kin have been notified and the name of the deceased in the single vehicle incident at Slocan, B.C. is now being released. The deceased’s name is: George Edward ANDERSON (born May 29, 1936) of Slocan, B.C. The B.C. Coroner’s Service and RCMP are continuing to investigate the occurrence. RCMP Submission

Grand Forks hosted this year’s B.C. Rural Communities Summit at Grand Forks Secondary School from June 7 to 9. The event brought over 100 people from around the province to attend multiple workshops and focused on networking with other communities. “It was great to have all that creativity in our town, said Mayor Brian Taylor. “I did attend a number of sessions and it’s going to have an impact on us and hopefully everyone will also go away with things for their own community. The summit allowed everybody to creatively think about successfully competing in the global market for business, stated Taylor. “It was a small town rural discussion so there was very little discussion about the big city problems, he added. “A lot of the discussion focused on the challenges that small town communities face. This year’s theme was focused on “Grassroots, Growing Sustainable Rural Communities, and featured a keynote

Russell discussed how revising the framework of rural economic development practitioners can strengthen rural economies, while Moreland discussed how to use a food value chain to explore economically rewarding strategies while staying local. Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) Area C Director Grace McGregor hopes to have Russell present the same discussion to Christina Lake in the future. “I really enjoyed it and there were some really good presentations, McGregor said. “I think it was fairly well attended and, quite frankly, it’s held every two years so everyone should try and attend the rural summit. The workshops McGregor attended helped to reinforce some of her ways of

Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area D Director Irene Perepolkin agreed and felt there was a lot of opportunity for learning. “It was very successful with a lot of good workshops pertaining to regional areas, Perepolkin said. “It was good for it to come to Grand Forks to allow people out of the area know what we have here and to come and visit. Other workshops included issues surrounding tourism, using technology to support rural innovation, economic gardening and emergency response teams. Region-wide transit evolution could take hold by fall JIM SINCLAIR Advertiser Editor
The Mayor of Castlegar is bullish on expected changes to regional transit, and he’s not alone. Lawrence Chernoff heads a regional committee charged with (in concert with BC Transit) working toward a truly regional transit system, something to benefit everyone. With the way things have operated in the past, what lies ahead in the not-too-distant future is exciting to say the least. What the politicians, administrators, staff and BC Transit personnel have in mind is the kind of a system folks
will be pleased with, whether they live in Trail or Kaslo. Lawrence Chernoff said Friday that a revamped schedule has long been craved, but only lately has the collective will and spirit of co-operation been sufficient for real results to be attainable. “It’s really, one system over here... another system over here... all these hodgepodge things along the line,”said the Castlegar mayor. “We wanted to know how to make it better, and the only way is a coordinated effort. “If you make it convenient, people will use the transit.” Chernoff and the others in the group

are hopeful the curtain may rise on a new layout, new schedules, new routes and new
fare structure by the time fall rolls around. As far as a transit system overhaul is
concerned, again, it’s not like the topic just came up lately. “I think we’ve been
talking about it for two years,” said BC Transit Corporate Spokesperson Maribeth Burton on June 8. “So I think it’s just sort of the natural maturing of the transit system, making sure there’s a better local connectivity. All these seven regions and beyond, the nine operating systems can work together. It’s going to truly benefit the region.” As a case in point, Burton used the example of Selkirk College students being able to stay in their own communities and pay one regional fare and one local fare, “so there’s more clarity in the fare structure.”
In line for kudos from many sources, including Burton and Chernoff, is a man named Kevin Schubert who has guided and driven the project with innovative ideas and unflagging optimism and persistence. The corporate spokesperson was upbeat in describing what has been going on with this project. “At BC Transit we’re looking for the greater good and the leadership in the local communities is tremendous. “We’ve got the right people on the committee, we’ve got the right attitudes. The West Kootenay is on side.”
Trail outdoor market set to make its return following a hiatus of four decades TIMOTHY SCHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser
The seed of a downtown market has been sprouted and it is expected to mature into a full-fledged plant June 15 when the city’s first outdoor market in 40 years takes root. The development and implementation of a downtown farmers market on Esplanade Avenue was rated as high priority in the recently released Trail Downtown Plan’s downtown action items list. As part of the developing civic plaza, repeated surveys uncovered a perceived need for a downtown open-air market as part of the picture the city was formulating on improving the downtown milieu. So the marketing and engagement chair of the Downtown Opportunities and Action Committee, Maggie Stayanovich, put out the word in the Trail and District Chamber of Commerce newsletter on Friday.
As of this week Trail will join its neighbours Castlegar and Nelson (whose public market is pictured above) with an outdoor venue at which a variety of merchants can peddle their wares – grown, crafted, and otherwise. David Reid photo
By Monday morning the chamber office was inundated with over one dozen calls and emails from people expressing interest in the market. “Right now the way things are going, our first market might
top 20 (vendors),” she said. The benchmark for the first Trail market is 20 vendors — from people selling bedding plants to those selling fruit, making jewelry, making candles — but the next phase would
be to expand to 40 vendors. Held on the “pier” and the wooden decking at the end of the Esplanade, the market would not interfere with traffic, and it would have the room to expand as it grows,
said Stayanovich. There are opportunities to go further down the Esplanade to Spokane Street, and then the other way into Jubilee Park, she noted. “The opportunities are endless, and it gives our downtown businesses a huge opportunity to have increased traffic,” Stayanovich said. “Of course, we are encouraging them to participate, whether as a sidewalk sale or running a special, they are welcome to join in.” The chamber office will be providing the administration and coordination for the markets. The market begins June 15 and runs until Oct. 19 every two weeks on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Esplanade. For any questions, concerns or to reserve a spot in the market, contact Maggie Stayanovich, at 250368-3144 or email tcocm@netidiea.com.

CANADIAN MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION FOR THE KOOTENAYS INVITES MEMBERS AND INTERESTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ATTEND ITS ANNUAL AGM
Eighty-eight dollars generated by Slocan spoon GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Latest in a series about the Kootenaiana trade. Queen Elizabeth II marked her diamond jubilee this month. The only other British monarch to reach that milestone, Elizabeth’s great great grandmother Queen Victoria, marked 60 years on the throne in 1897. Among the souvenirs created to commemorate the latter occasion was a sterling silver spoon with Victoria’s profile embossed on the handle and “Slocan City” in the bowl. One of those spoons drew nine bids on eBay this month and sold for £55 (about $88 Cdn). The year 1897 was not only the queen’s anniversary, but Slocan’s high point in its early life as a mining boomtown. That year it boasted two newspapers and the relentless pounding of nails as most of the business district was thrown up in a frenzy. On the Queen’s birthday weekend in May, the beautiful SS Slocan was launched, and pioneer prospector Eli Carpenter astonished everyone by walking a tightrope over main street — instantly becoming a part of local folklore. hotel as “situated on the banks of the beautiful Slocan Lake, and guests can sit upon the balcony and gaze upon the grandest scenery in America [sic] without extra charge...
“Goldbugs, Silver Democrats, Canadian Capitalists, Prospectors, Miners, Tenderfeet, Ten Mile Millionaires and Pilgrims of every shade in politics, religion or wealth are welcome at this house.” The hotel retained its old west flavour until it burned suspiciously in October 1973. It’s now the site of Valhalla Pure, while the name lives on in New Market Foods, which opened last year. Oddly, this appears to be the only postcard of the hotel ever produced. At the time, Al and Nora Johnston were the proprietors. Arts Anya’s vision hits Studio B with The Bartab CASSANDRA CHIN West Kootenay Advertiser
Anya Soroka will be presenting her second play entitled The Bartab in Studio B in Grand Forks on June 29 and 30. Without giving too much away, Soroka noted that the play is about a guy and a girl having a conversation in a bar. The one act play is about how the girl wants to get to know the guy (played by Vanya Popov) better. A month and a half in the making, the night will also feature a monologue, some poems and discussion at the end of the night. “The people I’m working with right now are really amazing,” said Soroka. “Michelle Garrison (who is directing the play) is the president of the Boundary Arts Council

It’s amazing to work with someone so professional in this little town. The rehearsals that we’ve had so far have been
really cool.” There was some trouble finding a male lead at first, Soroka stated, but Popov happened to
be back in town. “He isn’t an actor, but he has a lot of stage experience because he’s a musician,” she added.
“He turned out to be quite perfect for the role.” Recently returning from Vancouver where she was living, Soroka grew up in Grand Forks before graduating high school and attending film school in Victoria, B.C. From there, she attended a theatre school in Moscow. “I’m finding that I’m now able to produce more than I was in Vancouver, of what I actually wanted to be doing,” she said. Last March Soroka organized “V-Day: A memory, a monologue, a rant and a prayer” at Studio B. The night featured various monologues presented by residents as a response to violence against women. The Bartab will be presented in Studio B on June 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m.
Selkirk College celebrates Teck Metals Ltd.... and art Cultural Assistant, Jessica Morin, originally recommended George’s art after noticing his work at an event. “I saw Clint’s artwork for the first time at one of Iron Indian’s vending tables at an event in the Okanagan last year. I took a business card from his wife and put it in my pocket hoping to have the opportunity to work with him down the road.”
SUBMITTED
Selkirk College celebrated Teck Metals Trail Operation’s contribution to the Aboriginal Gathering Place, Thursday May 31. Carol Vanelli Worosz, Communications Manager for Teck Metals Ltd., in Trail, accepted a handcrafted metal art sculpture commissioned from B.C. Aboriginal artist, Clint George, in recognition of Teck’s $50,000.00 donation in support of the completion of the Aboriginal Gathering Place on the Castlegar campus. Clint George, a member of the Penticton Indian Band in the Okanagan, has been crafting metal art as a career for six years. His father, Grant, taught him how to weld when he was a young teen and together they run a business named Iron

Indian. Clint considers creating artwork for others an honour because he becomes informed about culture, places, and stories. The art piece that Selkirk College commissioned for Teck is representative of the
relationship between the college and the company and is portrayed in the form of a shield. The scene in the shield represents the rivers and mountains in which the college is located. The eagle represents knowledge and protection which
is welded on a red background that represents strength and courage. George accepted the commission in March and attended the open house on May 31 to deliver the piece himself. Selkirk College Aboriginal
Selkirk College is honoured to partner with a community supporter such as Teck Metals Ltd. in a project that is beneficial to the health and welfare, and cultural experience of students attending the college. The Aboriginal Gathering Place represents a welcoming and educational environment for students and will be completed for the 2012 fall semester.

May. Overall, officers found that 23 per cent of the properties inspected had garbage and other wildlife attractants available on their property. This is nearly one in four properties that is not yet managing their attractants properly. Officers inspected 175 properties and found 40 with unsecured garbage on site. Additionally, three properties had other attractants available such as pet food, and a cooler containing food and bird seed. All residents issued with a dangerous wildife protection order had cleaned up the attractant when officers returned to inspect the property. Officers also found, but did not audit, fruit trees and compost which are also major bear attractants

in Nelson. Garbage, unpicked fruit and compost bring bears, as well as skunks, raccoons, coyotes, rats and other animals close to homes. The City of Nelson has a wildlife attractant bylaw that
regulates the presence of bear attractants in the city. Bear Aware will be out tagging garbage left out on the curb overnight with bright yellow “bear attractant” stickers and visiting homes to remind
people to manage garbage. Residents are asked to store garbage indoors or in a secure shed, use bear-resistant cans, or freeze the smellier food items until garbage is collected. To learn more
about identifying and managing bear attractants near your home visit bearaware.bc.ca or email Joanne Siderius, the area Bear Aware community coordinator, at nelson@bearaware.bc.ca.
Little change in cross-border traffic Trail brief New federal regulations governing cross border shopping have had “minimal” effect at the border in the Greater Trail region, says a Canadian Border Services Agency spokesperson. Stephanie Waddell said less than one week into the reign of the new regulations it was too early
to see if there would be a significant trend developing. However, for the first weekend of the rise in the duty-free limit — from $50 to $200 on visits of more than 24 hours — there was a slight increase in local traffic volumes compared to the same weekend last year. For the June 1-3 weekend, there were 597 vehicles cross-
ing the border into Canada from the U.S., an increase of 43 vehicles from the weekend recorded one year ago. From June 3-5, 2011, there were 554 vehicles. The CBSA officials collected $12,840.71 in duties and taxes this year, a jump of $2,899.95 from the $9,940.76 they collected in duties and taxes last year.
The lack of any change in the sameday exemption — a time period in which most cross border shoppers would do the deed — could offset the impact of the other rule changes on cross-border traffic. Americans, however, are entitled to $200 worth of exemptions when crossing the border from Canada on a one-day excursion.

Kootenay Gallery presents Variations on Symmetry SUBMITTED
Opening on June 15 at the Kootenay Gallery of Art is an exhibition entitled, Variations on Symmetry, by Canadian ceramic artists Eliza Au and Ying-Yeuh Chuang. These large scale installation pieces will at first glance surprise and delight. Upon further examination the viewer will come to understand the intricacies and level of detail that went into creating them. Ying-Yueh Chuang explores symmetry in relation to repetition and patterning found in the landscape and natural environment. An example of this is the large scale piece entitled ‘+’ placed on the floor in the centre of one of the exhi-

bition spaces, an intricate arrangement of delicate sculptures resembling under-
water plants. Eliza Au, in turn explores symmetry in relation to preci-
sion, order and scale found in architecture. As in architecture, materials are
selected keeping in mind criteria such as structural strength and flexibility. Au’s
two large ceramic mandalas entitled ‘Mediation of Order’ are references to Is-
lamic tile patterns and Gothic tile and ironwork patterns. This impressive exhibition combines ceramics and mixed media to create works that reflect the artists’ own hybrid culture influenced by their Asian origins as well as the contemporary Western culture in which they live and work. Variations on Symmetry will be exhibited at the Kootenay Gallery, located on Heritage Way across from the Castlegar Airport from June 15 - July 28 with an opening reception on Friday, June 15 at 7 p.m. There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome to come and meet the artists. Recent assessment of Columbia - strong but not ominous The BC River Forecast Centre has ended the Flood Watch for rivers in the Kootenay and Columbia Regions including: • West Kootenay • East Kootenay • Columbia including Illecillewaet, Kicking Horse and surrounding rivers. Rivers through the region have reached their peak levels from heavy rainfall earlier last week. Photos depict water levels on the Columbia River as of June 10 in locations from Castlegar to Genelle. Jim Sinclair photos
Other than the largest rivers in the region (Columbia, Kootenay) rivers are receding, and are below levels of concern for flooding. If additional heavy rain is forecast to fall in the region, advisories may be reissued. The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant. On Tuesday, June 12 spokespersons for the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) and Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) indicated that there were no ongoing issues relating to flood-risk as of that time.

SUPERTRUCK Not just built, overbuilt! Toyota spent five years in research and development before setting out to build the Tundra and literally laying waste to its competitors to learn even more. Toyota engineers left nothing to chance.

More importantly, they listened to their customers, real truck people, who asked for greater payload and towing capacity, more torque and power, and the durability and toughness to out-class all others.
When pushed to the limits, a Tundra doesn’t waver, but rather delivers even greater smoothness and precision. Reliable, durable and entirely overbuilt to handle the extremes. That’s how Toyota makes things better.

Personal Finance
Dealing with the consuming pursuit of “Having it All” SUBMITTED
I had the pleasure of traveling to a financial conference in Chicago recently. There were several hours spent either waiting in the airports or on the flight itself, so I took the liberty of checking out the reading material at the local magazine shop, just to kill some time.
Any government’s reelection hinges on a strong economy, and its most important measure is determined primarily by consumer spending It was around 20 years ago when David Chilton’s book The Wealthy Barber hit the book stores, selling more than two million copies in Canada. The Wealthy Barber was not your typical boring financial planning text book. The storyline centered around three people in their late 20s who spent time with Roy the “barber” to learn the basic and fundamental lessons in financial planning. Each chapter
described a different visit and a different element of what it takes to get ahead in life and become financially successful. That book made a huge impact on many Canadians – especially me, as it literally steered me in the direction of becoming a financial planner myself. So, as I walked through the airport bookstore I happened to come across a new David Chilton book called The Wealthy Barber Returns… hmmm, what can I say – I couldn’t resist. Yes, I spent the 20 bucks, got comfortable and shut the world out for a few hours just so I could savour every page. David still honed in on the fact that we as a society need to save and the reason it’s so difficult is that no one out there really wants you to. Nowadays, we are getting bombarded with constant advertising and we’re being encouraged to spend as much as possible. Our kids are constantly asking for the latest and greatest and they have become so relentless, cute and innately skilled in the art of manipulation. Our friends and family are most likely
on a different financial playing field and the temptation of going out for dinner, buying that new toy or traveling to far-off tropical destinations is so incredibly difficult to resist. Realtors are anxious to upgrade you into your new dream home and bankers are far too eager to lend you the money. Any government’s re-election hinges on a strong economy and its most important measure is determined primarily by consumer spending. When the economies of developed nations recently crashed due to excessive private debts, the governments responded by lowering interest rates and offering other incentives to get us to borrow and spend even more. This is akin to beginning an alcoholic’s rehabilitation by sending him or her on a pubcrawl! Naturally, in a wealthy, developed economy like Canada’s, our desires will run well beyond our stream of needs into our pool of wants. That’s understandable, even healthy. Our quest for “the good life” and the posses-
sions and experiences it brings, is part of what motivates us to work hard, innovate, embrace risks, grow our talents and then take full advantage of them. However, I think we can all agree that we’ve gone a little too far (actually a lot too far) in our pursuit of stuff. Nothing is ever enough. We want more and when we get it, we still want more. We want what we see on TV.
One of the most damaging misconceptions in personal finance: saving for the future requires sacrifices today that lessen enjoyment of life We want what our friends have and yes, we want what rich people have. Sometimes we even want what we already have but in the newer, fancier and bigger models. David really hit it on the mark when he concluded that “all our stuff weighs us down.” Our pursuit of “more” often distracts us from what is truly important in
life. This never-ending material quest is not only sabotaging our financial tomorrows, but it is also negatively impacting our psychological todays. This really hit home for me. I’ve experienced the humbling financial hardships of being poor and I embraced the quest “for the good life” – and achieved. It’s our preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else that prevents us from living freely and nobly. One of the most damaging misconceptions in personal finance is that saving for the future requires sacrifices today that lessen people’s enjoyment of life. Surprisingly, it’s quite the opposite. People who live within their means tend to be happier and less stressed. That’s true not only for the obvious reason – they know their financial futures look bright – but, also because they’re not consumed with consumption. They’re not in the emotionally and financially draining race to acquire the most stuff they possibly can - a race that has no finish line and thus no winner. I’ve come to real-
ize that there is so much more to life and I believe David Chilton has discovered this too. If you have a chance to read The Wealthy Barber Returns - please do… it will definitely give you a better perspective of what’s really important as we journey through life.

Sculpture Talk
Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.
‘Sack Race’ (foam/cement/resin) Sculptures take many forms and shapes. The expressiveness and imagination of the artist is conveyed by creating his or her vision, usually in a medium like bronze or stone. Roger Golden’s “Sack Race’ is a refreshing change: vibrant and alive, full of undeniable creativity and appeal. ‘Sack Race’ displays the family picnic/fair favourite over a 13’ footprint. Covered figures contort, stumble, struggle to get up, and lie prone, exhausted. He has ably captured the intensity of the race as they totter towards an imaginary finish line. “I was inspired by the childhood game and all the emotions and exertions that happen by jumping in a sack,” says Golden. “Exhilaration, aggression, agony, laughter, embarrassment, frustration, they’re all there.” Working with Winterstone, a lightweight cement-like compound, foam and resin, Golden has fashioned the figures and covered them in a painted foam core and resin mix that mimics the look of burlap. “Actual burlap wouldn’t withstand a year round installation, so I’ve had to improvise,” he notes. “I do like that the piece can be configured as I want to. Every time I display it, it can be different.” Even when his full size figures are uncovered, Golden’s deliberate technique of avoiding smooth, unblemished lines lends them a raw roughness. Fissures, cracks, bumps and bubbles provide gritty realism, as if the trials and toils of life are manifested on their forms. Look at ‘Walking Man’ - a Sculptors Society of Canada award winner - ‘On the Nickel’ or ‘Closing Time’: each portrays the hardships of life in finish and style. Even the young women in the latter piece
are weary looking and worn, the debilitations of hard partying powerfully expressed. Golden freely admits his subjects are drawn from life in his part of Toronto. “I’m no barfly but I do study people and attempt to capture what makes them so human, and so sympathetic. The failings and the daily trials are often physically visible. It’s why the roughness of my chosen material is almost tragically appropriate. They are like characters you find in a Tom Waits song.” Indeed, lately Golden has been
“I was inspired by the childhood game and all the emotions and exertions that happen by jumping in a sack.” Roger Golden
working to Waits’ gravel and whisky smoke growl almost exclusively. “When I’m not sculpting I’m more of a jazz guy. But when I’m moulding a figure I’ve envisioned, it’s often Waits musical vignettes and characters that inspire and accelerate the creativity.” Looking at his body of work, the connection is understandable and apparent. ‘Sack Race’ is a departure of sorts, but the expressiveness Golden lends to his figures is found here even given the abstraction the ‘burlap’ provides. It is a unique work of art that reflects the originality of the artist while delighting the audience with childhood memories.

six months or so. Venus continues to be retrograde, Summer Solstice is less than a week away, Uranus will form the first of 7 exact Square aspects with Pluto and Jupiter has just entered Gemini. Looking to the synchronicity of such events is the focus of Astrology. Jupiter in Gemini (June 11, 2012 – June 25, 2013) will generally synchronize with increased amounts of communications, information exchanges and debates that will challenge our cherished convictions. Gemini is considered one of the more difficult placements of Jupiter. It tends to coincide with the scattering of one’s focus and to excess gossip and superficial thinking where more broad minded and philosophical thinking is warranted. This is already a common issue in the world but it stands to increase noticeably over the course of the next year. Coming to a greater appreciation of the relativity of perceptions, facts and truths is one of the higher goals to be achieved. Get ready, the roller coaster has just reached its initial peak!

A major focus on home and/or family is likely keeping you busy. This trend will continue for several weeks. This may not be the best time to venture too far. The pace is about to quicken and extra efforts may be required to stay focused. At best, you will be able to tackle several projects at once and get some socializing in as well.
Assessing the scope and spectrum of skills, ideas, plans, projects and/or resources is a current theme. Stimulating multiple streams of activity and/or income is likely. Creating a more solid base for the sake of security is motivating your focus. This is an expansive time for you and the focus is directed to your overall base of operations.
That time has come to take a leap of faith. Jupiter now in your sign and over the course of the next year stands to inspire you to express yourself creatively, perhaps bigger and better than ever! Though you are probably naturally creative, imaginative and artistic, this transit offers a big opportunity to advance to the next level.
Changes in your world have been rolling in steadily. These have perhaps been opening new doors and horizons. Yet they may have also left you feeling less secure than you would like. Jupiter in Gemini will synchronize with the need to exercise a deeper faith in the rhyme and reason of your life and life in general. Aim to gain mastery over your emotions and imagination.
Your sights are set on the future with added emphasis, as if all of a sudden. Stimulating your network for both practical and simply social reasons is likely. Deciphering who are your friends and who are the friends of your friends will become increasingly important. Make this a top priority over the next few months to activate opportunities.
Your career and public life are experiencing a boost now. The time has come to direct your focus more deliberately. The desire to do so has likely been brewing and now it is time to take action. Stimulations of your intellect are inspiring you to reach higher somehow. Whether you are broadening your horizons, activating a brighter vision for the future, activating your higher minded awareness and/or feeling the call to learn and study, you feel enthusiastic about the possibilities. Tune-in now so you can invest wisely later.
Prior dreams, visions, beliefs and perceptions continue to fade away. This is a natural process and is healthy, even if confusing and challenging. If this is not happening somehow, there may actually be a problem. Your main challenge now is to decide whether to answer the ‘higher call’ or to assert your will over current circumstances.
New doors are opening and this could prove to be a very exciting time. Yet you must also be flexible and be ready and willing to let go of old habits and life style rhythms and patterns that have served their time. This will prove to be an ongoing theme for ‘a while’, but if you begin now you will be a step or two ahead.
The focus upon health continues. Since this is simply the most valuable thing ‘any’ person has, you are wise to pay extra attention now and over the course of the next 12 months or so. If you lack awareness or exercise wishful thinking regarding your health, the time has come to take a closer look. A healthy diet, at least moderate regular exercise and supplementation will probably do it.
A creative wave is washing in. It will inspire you to take a variety of key initiatives now and over the course of the next year. Doing so is more than simply ideal; it will give you momentum that you will be very glad for about this time next year. It is time to listen and learn more than speak and teach. Exercise a beginner’s mind and attitude.
The time has come to nurture a deepened state of confidence. The main focus surrounds your earning potential and/or array of talents and skills. Ideally you have made an inner commitment to slowly and surely achieve more knowledge and higher realizations. Feeding your soul this way is the other pole to raising your confidence levels regarding your abilities.

Thank you, VCC.” At Okanagan College more than 1,600 students were recognized at convocation ceremonies held at the Kelowna campus. One family has a special reason to celebrate. Two Salmon Arm sisters graduated with top honours for their outstanding academic achievements. Both women received their diplomas in Business Administration and both plan to pursue careers in ac-

counting. Eight students have become the first graduates of Langara’s Bachelor of Recreation Management (BRM) Program – the only two-year degree completion program of its kind in Canada. The unique BRM degree combines recreation courses and business courses together into one program to build on students’ understandings of community, recreation, business, and
management theory. Our colleges are also making strides to ensure students can attend college regardless of where they live. The Tourism and Recreation Management program at College of the Rockies is being offered entirely online starting in September. This will not replace the face-to-face program at the Cranbrook Campus but will offer students a new opportunity to study on their own time from anywhere. And, Camosun’s unique EPPRENTICE Flexible Learning for Professional Cook Training, received the Association of Canadian Community Colleges’ 2012 Gold Program Excellence Award. All the best for a wonderful summer, Jim Reed President, BC Colleges Selkirk College Successfully Opens the Aboriginal Gathering Place in Castlegar Selkirk College Media Release, May 28. In June of 2010 Selkirk College marked the beginning of construction on their Castlegar campus Aboriginal Gathering Place with a ceremonial blessing and ground breaking. On May 24, 2012 they celebrated the official opening of the facility with over 100 invited guests in attendance. “The Gathering Place project was initiated over three years ago with a successful proposal to Government. The project has always been grounded in the vision of a better college for Aboriginal learners, about the connection between celebrating culture and access to postsecondary education.” Selkirk College President, Angus Graeme goes on to say. “The Gathering Place is critical to building and strengthening relationships in the wider Aboriginal community that the college serves including partner governments, Aboriginal post-secondary institutions, and community service providers. “Today was a very important day for Selkirk College. “We’re so honoured to be working with our partners to support more meaningful access to post-secondary education.”

Eat and drink for performance... fuel up for sports and fun
It is the time of year for school sport and physical activity fun days! Whether you or the kids you coach are competitive athletes or just out to have fun, good nutrition is important. For peak performance choose a variety of foods from each food group in Canada’s Food Guide every day. Vegetables, fruit and whole grains like brown rice, whole
wheat pasta, and oatmeal provide the carbohydrates needed to fuel the body for sports. Milk, fortified soy beverages, yogurt, cheese, and smoothies made with milk help build strong bones. Food from the meat and alternatives group such as chili, grilled chicken, stir-fried tofu and tuna sandwiches are high in protein and key sources of iron. Visit Health
Canada’s website www. healthcanada.gc.ca/ foodguide to create a personalized “My Food Guide.” Insist that the food and beverages available at school events are healthy. Healthy choices not only help to fuel optimal performance, but their presence at school sporting events and fun days reinforces healthy eating messages taught in the classroom. When-
ever possible, link healthy choices at activity days with your school’s healthy living programs. Ensure the menu at school events allows students the opportunity to choose a balanced meal. Instead of chips and candy, include milk, 100 per cent real fruit/ vegetable juice, cheese, apple slices or crisp raw vegetables and dip. Choose 100 per
cent whole wheat buns to accompany items like chili, soups and veggie burgers. As of 2007, all of the menu items for sale must meet the Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in B.C. Schools. If you will be serving food you should contact your local Health Unit a couple of weeks prior to the event to determine if you need a Health Permit. Staying hydrated
during physical activity on a hot day can be a challenge. Most athletes do not drink enough fluids to keep their bodies working at their best. Make sure plenty of water and hydrating snacks like watermelon and orange slices are available to counteract all that sweating. When participating in physical activities it is important to drink before, during and after
the event or practice. Drink 1 ½ to 2 glasses of water at least 4 hours before exercise. Take water breaks every 15-20 minutes during the event or practice and keep drinking fluids after exercise. For most activities that last 90 minutes or less, water is usually the best choice. Author: Cindy Bossio is a Community Nutritionist with Interior Health.
