Quadra Islanders will gather later this month to remember one of their own who was tragically killed in Edmonton. Gabe Gregg, 31, died June 6, after being assaulted outside an Edmonton night club. Derrick Shawn Hansen, 36, of Edmonton has been charged with manslaughter. According to news reports, Gregg was “sucker punched,” fell to the g round and struck his head on the cement. He was found by police on June 3, around 3 a.m., lying near the Gabe Gregg corner of Jasper Avenue and 107th Street. He was taken to hospital by ambulance, but Gre gg was already in a coma. With no sign of brain activity, he was taken off life support. Friends said Gregg was an organ donor and several of his organs were donated to others. Gregg was raised on Quadra Island where his family still resides. He played a variety of sports, but rugby was his passion. He lived in Nanaimo where he ran his own construction business. Just four days before he was assaulted, Gregg had moved to Edmonton. He is fondly remembered in Nanaimo for his upbeat demeanor and great sense of humour. He was a member of the Young Professionals of Nanaimo and helped out with the organizations two community gardens. A memorial service for Gregg takes place on June 23, 4 p.m., at the Quadra Island Community Centre. For more information, visit the Facebook page “Gabe Gregg’s Celebration of Life.”

Teen crime ring faces restorative justice from the interviews with five of the boys (their names cannot be used):

Youths face their victims, make up for their misdeeds, and avoid criminal records PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

At the witching hour, a group of 15- and 16-year-olds silently crawled out of their beds and snuck out of their homes to meet up on the streets. During the months of March and April – and always during the middle of the night – the group of six to seven boys texted messages to each other on cell phones to co-ordinate their efforts to target unlocked vehicles in the Willow Point area. “There were two rashes (of thefts from vehicles) in two months. It was a real spike,” says Campbell River RCMP Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard. Typically working in groups of two or three, the boys cruised the streets from about 12:30-4 a.m., specifically looking for unlocked vehicles that contained valuables. They stole money, electronics, iPods and sunglasses, but curiously, they stayed away from smart phones because they thought they could be electronically tracked. “They were working in concert with each other…a semi-orga-

nized little crime ring,” notes Beauregard. As the thefts mounted, the Mounties ramped up their efforts to find the culprits. They followed up on tips and actually stopped some of the boys in the early morning hours as they walked the streets. But with little hard evidence, police took the investigation to the next level: They visited their homes and spoke to the parents to let them know what their sons were up to in the wee hours. “Parents sometimes say, ‘It’s not my kid’ – it’s a real eye-opening experience for parents,” says Beauregard. It didn’t take much to break the code of silence and officers soon had a list of seven youths responsible for the rash of thefts. However, instead of hauling them into court, all seven were directed to the Restorative Justice Program. It’s a program primarily designed for young, first-time offenders, and the purpose is to make them acknowledge their crimes, to face their victims, to make restitution, and to receive a second

chance to do good with their lives. “The philosophy of restorative justice is based on community healing. In other words, the community decides what is best for itself in terms of resolving certain criminal matters,” wrote RCMP Insp. Lyle Gelinas in his report to city council. In many ways, going through restorative justice is harder on the young offender than going to court. The reward though is the offender receives

no criminal record and they hopefully go away with a better understanding of how their misdeeds have such a harmful effect on so many people. Recently, a three-anda-half-hour restorative justice forum was held to deal with the seven youths. As part of their “sentence” they were asked to write letters of apology. The Mirror was also invited to interview the youths at the RCMP detachment. Here are excerpts

The tall and toned teen looks like he’s carrying the proverbial chip on his shoulder, but it’s clear he’s uncomfortable being interviewed and steadfastly refuses to even provide his first name, if only for the sake of familiarity. The boy says some of the stolen items were returned, but the money was spent. He promises this is the end of his late-night stealing. “I’m scared to get caught ag ain,” he says.

The forum also affected him, hopefully for the good. “It sucked seeing my mom cry. It was just bad, but it did help,” he says and then adds why stealing is wrong. “I could be hurting other people and I could also get hurt. It’s just not right.”

“I did it a couple of times…I affected a lot of people,” he says. He was stopped on the street by police, but didn’t think it was a

problem because they hadn’t committed any thefts. And then the officers came knocking on his door. “It was a big shock when said they had evidence,” he recalls. “My parents were mad.

They grounded me for several weeks and gave me a lot of chores.” He still hangs out with a couple of the same guys, but not others, and spends his free time outdoors, bike riding or indoors playing video games. Last year, 52 restorative justice forums were held in Campbell River. There were 70 in 2010. The forums dealt with people who had committed theft, mischief, fraud, drug possession, possession of weapons, assault, obstructing police, break and enter, uttering threats, and harassment. In addition to facing their victims and writing letters of apology, the perpetrators preformed volunteer community service and re-paid almost $6,000 in restitution to local schools, businesses and one victim.

The 35-year-old male driver, along with a woman and a girl all required treatment for non-life threatening injuries. The force of the impact crumpled the front end of the car and resulted in both

Drive Smart BC Driving While Using 2X14Devices Hand Held Any chance you might do another article on handheld device usage in BC? The first rider death of 2012 in Kelowna was caused PLANNING TYEE CHEV by driver inattention to cell phone usage. I’ve attached a photo that was just taken this FOR LIFE Saturday. We actually took several - I was driving, my wife was operating the camera. This particular one clearly shows what has the driver’s attention. Traffic was not at a standstill - it was flowing at 60 km/h, and there was plenty of vehicles around on a six-lane highway. The high-res version of this photo plus the one with his license plate (and a clear shot of his phone to his ear) have been handed over to the Kelowna RCMP. There’s not much that I can add to this person’s request to continue to highlight the dangers of taking your attention away from the driving task. He’s clearly had enough of seeing this selfish, uncaring behaviour around himself and his family when he is driving and intends to do something about it. If someone from the Kelowna Detachment takes action it is going to be very difficult for this driver to explain away his actions! I just hope that they don’t end up becoming part of a road rage incident when the offending driver realizes that a photo has been taken. Is any call or text so important that you have to respond to it while driving? If you must say yes, you are fooling yourself and endangering everyone. Public won’t get to see review of mayor Jakeway’s controversial comments KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Council’s concerns surrounding Mayor Wa l t e r J a ke w ay ’s criticism of city hall won’t be made public despite one councillor’s attempt to bring it all out into the open. Council is expected to discuss and review comments Jakeway made in a keynote address, lambasting city staff, that he delivered at a Rotary lunch May 23 at the Coast Discovery Inn. Coun. Mary Storry

served notice at a May 29 council meeting that she would be asking council, by way of a motion, to “review and discuss the mayor’s role as council spokesperson and whether (the) comments accurately or appropriately reflect the will and view of council.” She stipulated that the discussion be incamera – closed to the public and the local media. Coun. Ron Kerr took exception to the review being behind closed doors and questioned

why it won’t be done in the public domain. “I’ve gone over the list and I didn’t see anything in that motion that would apply to in-camera,” Kerr said at Tuesday’s council meeting. Peter Wipper, city clerk, said the motion falls under employee negotiations, which are not discussed in public. To w h i c h K e r r asked, “who would the employee be?” Laura Ciarniello, the city’s corporate manager, said as each coun-

Part of the reason for the spike, Gelinas explained, was a group of thieves who stole vehicles in order to commit break and enters. In a 26-your period, from July 14-15, the group stole four vehicles in order to commit three attempted B&Es. The last vehicle they stole wound up dumped in the city hall parking lot. However, police were able to get their men. “At least five members of the group were arrested for possession of stolen property in the weeks following these B&Es,” Gelinas wrote. “These arrests greatly disrupted the group’s ability to operate and contributed to significant reductions in thefts of autos during the months of August (12 incidents) and September (three incidents).”

by RCMP Insp. Total B&Es were down 24.3 per cent over 2010, while business breakins fell from 75 to 47, a decrease of 37.3 per cent. Police statistics also show a drop in B&Es for the first quarter of 2012. From January to March, police responded to 33 breakins, compared to 52 for the same period in 2010. “The entire detachment is committed to the crime reduction strategy,” wrote Gelinas. “Some of our successes have been putting certain groups in jail. “However, they will return and this will put pressure on our detachment to con-

Troublesome leak is keeping the outdoor pool closed, for now, but the good news is the splash park is on its way KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

There is a “slim” chance a water park planned for Willow

Point Park may open this summer even though construction has yet to begin, says the city. The splash park, a

project of the Campbell River Rotary Club, was approved in principle in 2010 and given final approval by city council in November

2011. Fast forward two years later, and the splash park is poised to finally become a reality.

Pool still closed as city searches for leak The Centennial Park outdoor pool remains closed as the city continues to investigate the cause of a serious leak. “Our maintenance contractor and staff have been working to get the pool open again since a leak was first noticed (last) Friday,” said Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, in a news release. “Unfortunately, the age of the pool contributes to the challenge of finding the leak.” Milnthorp said the city is working to narrow down which areas of the 52-year-old pool are most likely to be the source of the leak and combing through all possibilities, methodically investigating using in-pipe video and pressurization techniques.

Oy vey! Who would have thought that the city’s only public outdoor pool would be closed less than week after opening for the summer? The city will continue to issue people who book the pool for priupdates on the pool’s status via vate rentals, and we encourage its website and Facebook page. swimmers to enjoy water fun at The pool will remain closed the pool at Strathcona Gardens until the source of the leak is as we work to find and repair determined and repaired. the leak,” Milnthorp adds. “We appreciate the patience The pool was constructed by of all our customers – families, the Rotary Club and turned over swim teams, schools and the to the municipality in 1960.

The splash park will be unique in Campbell River and will reflect the city’s environment, history and culture. “Elements of the park will include a fishing pole with salmon attached, a whale body and tail, and a graphic of a killer whale mouth on the mega soaker,” Wark said. The park is a joint effort between both local Rotary clubs and the Campbell River Firefighters Association. Telus and the city have also chipped in. The noon hour Rotary Club, which spearheaded the project, is contributing $120,000 while Telus is giving $116,000. Daybreak Rotary is contributing $40,000 while the professional firefighters are donating $20,000. Another $75,000 is coming from the Parks Parcel Tax, which is collected from taxpayers by the city.

Our View

No need for omnibus bill The Conservative government is set to pass Bill C-38, an omnibus budget bill which includes amendments and changes to many statutes. This has prompted a massive backlash from a number of groups, notaWe say: The bly environmental groups. One aspect of their protest was the voluntary gvernment blacking out of a number of websites is provoking on June 4. opponents While some of their rhetoric is overblown, it is puzzling why a majority Conservative government feels it needs to proceed in this way. If it wishes to amend specific statutes, why

not do so, without packaging a huge variety of changes in one bill? The Conservatives got used to doing this in their five years as a minority government. It was one way to keep at least one opposition party on side — put something in the budget bill that they wanted, and they would vote for it. It was an understandable tactic. The government had to compromise to the degree that it would propose legislation that one of its opponents would back. In fact, the Conservatives did have to go to the polls in 2008 and 2011 after it became clear that no opposition party was willing to back them any longer. Now there is a majority government. No longer does

the government have to keep one opposition party on side. And that’s fine. The parliamentary system is an adversarial one, with government and opposition on different sides of almost every issue. That’s why such omnibus bills don’t seem to make senese. All they do is hamper the public from paying closer attention to what the government’s plans are, and at the same time, raise fears which in many cases are exaggerated or non-existent. It seems that, with some moves like this omnibus budget bill, the Conservatives are deliberately provoking their opponents. – Black Press

Safety first, service always There has been a lot of speculation about changes to the Coast Guard and how they will affect safety on Vancouver Island. I have represented the Riding of Vancouver Island North since 1993 and lived on Vancouver Island for 40 years. I understand the importance of the Coast Guard. I am supportive of the decisions made by the government and by the Coast Guard on Vancouver Island. The Coast Guard will continue to use the same network of ships and responders on the Island to keep mariners safe in an emergency situation and the ongoing renewal of Coast Guard resources will make Vancouver Island a safer place to be on the water. The Island will continue to be served by the same network of search and rescue lifeboats and the Search and Rescue helicopter and fixed wing capacity at CFB Comox. Search and Rescue lifeboat situations will continue to operate from Campbell River, Port Hardy, Powell River, Tofino, Bamfield, and Saltspring Island. Goodbye British Columbia’s greenhouse gas goals

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

In February this column asked the question: “Are B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets history?” The answer is contained in a new draft plan from BC Hydro on how to meet future power demand. And while it’s not explicitly stated, the answer is yes. The draft plan was released in May for discussion purposes, but so far there hasn’t been much discussion. This is surprising given some of the recommendations, such as firing up the Burrard Thermal natural gas power plant more often and buying fossil fuel power from the North American market to keep up to demand. The plan confirms a few things that have been evident for a while. Dreams

of exporting B.C. hydroelectric power are gone for the foreseeable future. And with mining ramping up along with natural gas development and population growth, BC Hydro now projects electricity demand could rise by 50 per cent over the next 20 years. The emergence of huge shale gas sources in B.C. and across the United States has changed the North American energy picture dramatically, as U.S. electricity producers replace coal by burning cheaper and cleaner gas to ramp up power production. B.C. is losing gas market share in the U.S., its only export customer for heating fuel and electricity use. Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain

in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up considerably by 2020. Premier Christy Clark has a new target for 2020: three liquefied natural gas production lines feeding high-pressure tankers at Kitimat, for export to Asia. Not only will B.C. need to buy gas-fired power from outside the province to keep up to industrial and residential demand, but the natural gas industry will need its own new gas-fired electricity to produce LNG for export. Natural gas passed forestry as B.C.’s top resource revenue source many years ago. In 2005, the volatile

gas price spiked up and produced $1 billion in windfall profits that allowed the B.C. government to buy a rare period of public sector labour peace through the 2010 Olympics. Now a glut of shale gas has pushed the North American price down from its historic range of $4 to $6 per thousand cubic feet to about $2.40. Despite that low price, gas producers in B.C. are going flat out to develop the Horn River and Montney shale gas deposits in northeast B.C. I asked David Pryce, vice-president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, why so much gas is being developed now. He said producers have made huge investments in B.C. shale gas drilling Continued on A9

A new uniform patrols the woods of B.C. these days

MP: Coast Guard Continued from A8 investments in the protection of Canadians at sea. Over the past six years, the government has invested close to $1.4 billion to ensure the Coast Guard fleet is ready to serve Canadians when called upon. As a part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2010, our government invested $175 million in the Canadian Coast Guard to procure 68 new small vessels, 30 environmental barges, and to undertake major repair work on 40 of its largest vessels.

Vancouver Island and the Mainland will continue to be served by the existing 46 radio towers and five major radar sites that monitor shipping patterns, broadcast weather or other alerts and pickup distress calls from the water. Currently, there is a service gap among the five B.C. centres; if one centre goes down because of a power failure or has an unexpected high call volume, it cannot ask for help from a neighbouring centre. Our government is

fixing this problem to provide consistent, uninterrupted service to mariners. We are upgrading the Prince Rupert and Victoria centres with the best available technology, ensuring they are integrated, equipping them with better resources and additional staff where needed, and, ultimately, these changes will improve the Coast Guard’s already excellent service record to Canadians. John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern

Since June 1, backcountry users may have noticed a new uniform in the woods. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations compliance and enforcement officers will now be known as Natural Resource Officers and can enforce a broader range of natural resource legislation. Previously, Compliance and Enforcement Officers could only enforce acts that they were specifically designated to uphold. As Natural Resource Officers, they will be able to enforce a broader range of statutes, shorten response time and improve their effectiveness in the field. A single Natural Resource Officer can now respond to violations that are covered by more than one natural resource act, instead of three or four staff that may have been required previously. The new Natural Resource Officer designation is a result of the Natural Resource Compliance Act that was introduced in fall 2011 and came into effect on March 15.

Fletcher: Gas export market could evaporate Continued from A8 rights, and are in an international race to supply LNG to Asian countries where the price is currently four times higher than in North America. Whatever the domestic price, B.C. gas pro-

ducers have to show LNG investors such as Mitsubishi and Korea Gas that they can fill a steady procession of LNG tankers at a competitive rate. If LNG doesn’t fly here, B.C.’s gas export market soon evapo-

rates. Currently gas producers pay about $400 million a year in royalties, and that much again to buy up shale gas drilling rights. The industry already employs about 12,000 workers in B.C.

The B.C. government has little choice but to redefine its climate targets. Instead of cutting domestic emissions, it will try to take credit for displacing coal power in Asia. Fortunately, B.C.’s

main coal exports are for high-grade coal used in steel-making. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@ blackpress.ca

Chamber of Commerce staff, directors and volunteers hit the streets in first Business Thank-A-Thon

Scene & Heard

In collaboration with the Campbell River Chamber’s 80th Anniversary celebrations, the Chamber conducted its first Business Thank-A-Thon on Tuesday. The Thank-A-Thon was conceived to recognize and celebrate local businesses that have chosen Campbell River as their location to conduct their business. Because local businesses support the community by giving back their time and financial support to local sports teams and events, they enhance the quality of life and they contribute to a healthy local economy. It’s for these reasons that the Chamber, community partners and volunteers took to the streets with a message of thanks and support to our local businesses and employers.

The Business Thank-a-thon involved a Business Walk by chamber directors, staff and volunteers to visit local businesses – like Stevie and Jack Turley’s Gourmet Essentials – and say thanks and ask them five quick questions to gain a snapshot of the current business climate.

Rory Evans (left), Darin Striga and other Rotarians manned the barbecue.

Darren Kardal, Colleen Evans (Chamber executive director), Jim Anderson and Kim Jarvis set off on the Business Walk with placards in hand.

Island Life Photographics Marie Louise Mulder and Vic Goodman made a donation to the Rotarians in exchange for a yummy burger.

Youth volunteers Mairin Shields-Brown and Jasmine Biegler contributed their time and talents as part of an effort to involve young people in the event.

Campbell River Living Mural marks transition Students at Phoenix Middle School have recently completed a commemorative mural to mark the last Grade 9 year at the school. Next Sept the Grade 9s become part of Carihi and Phoenix becomes a Grade 6, 7, and 8 middle school. The project was devised by Art teacher Shannen Harle and local artist Peter Davies (Pete the Pen). This project represents the collaboration between the Phoenix PAC and the Campbell River Arts Council as part of their Youth in the Community Program. In March, eight grade 9 students were selected to design and create the imagery for the mural working under the guidance of Pete the Pen. “I have been

impressed with their creativity and commitment” he said. “The result is spec-

tacular.” “We surveyed all the Grade 9 students for their lasting impres-

sions of Phoenix and based the imagery for the mural design on the results collected from the survey,” said Harle, “then left it to Pete and his team to be creative. The mural looks amazing.” The result is a mural that is a massive 12 feet tall by eight feet wide. It is made of four separate panels that come together to form the finished presentation. It was recently fixed in position above the entrance to the gymnasium. “This project demonstrates the raw talent that abounds in our local schools and how initiatives such as the Arts Council’s Youth in the Community Program is helping to nurture and develop that talent – Brilliant!” said Pete the Pen.

City faces $3.6 million deficit KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

99

The city is forecasting a $3.6 million budget shortfall for 2012, according to preliminary fig-

ures. That’s up substantially from the last estimated budget deficit of $550,000 back in December. The picture looks bleaker now because of a change in the prop-

erty assessment value of the defunct Catalyst mill site. The BC Assessment Authority announced early last month that Catalyst no longer meets the requirements of a major industrial property, and

has been reclassified as business/ other, which means a significant reduction in Catalyst’s property taxes. That decision results in a loss of $1.8 million in tax revenue for

She says the Local Government Act of March 21,2012, states a development permit application must include several pieces of information including a written statement of intent and how the development will benefit the neighbourhood. Deller says the city’s land use department told her not at all that information was collected in the case of the pole peeler. Critics of a controversial pole peeler are accusing the city of allowing the plant owner to operate illegally while the regional district may consider calling in a mediator to settle the dispute. Tracey Deller, backed

2012. Included in the deficit is a $1.1 million tax shortfall carried over from 2011, plus a $1.3 million increase in costs related to contract commitments and inflationary increases, said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. If the city were to maintain the current level of services it provides to citizens, the tax rate would have to increase by 24 per cent in order to make up the $3.6 million. The loss of $1.8 million from Catalyst alone, equates to a 12 per cent residential tax increase. To put that into perspective, Ciarniello said a one per cent residential tax increase would bring in $150,000 in revenue for the city. That one per cent increase would mean roughly $12 more per year in property taxes for the average homeowner. The city’s operating budget is approximately $37 million which Continued on A3

No service by request. We love you Dad. Messages of condolence for the family may be left at www.suttonsfuneralhome.com.

In Alaska and the Yukon, the indigenous Alaskan Rhubarb (Polygonum alaskanum), is used as a rhubarb substitute. However, not every-

thing rhubarb is sweet and good. One wild substitute is Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), an escaped nonnative plant originally introduced from Asia as a garden ornamental. Aggressive in nature, it now infests coastal marshes, waterfront areas, rivers and streams. The bamboo-like plant has now become naturalized and a cross-Canada checkup indicates it’s in the rogues’ gallery of

Miranda Roeke and Briana Aldea, both 3, fashioned umbrellas out of rhubarb’s gigantic leaves.

Black Creek runner crowned NCAA champ – twice EARLE COUPER BLACK PRESS

H

ow do you top a NCAA Div. 1 10K championship? With a NCAA Div. 1 5K crown just two days later. That was the remarkable achievement recorded by Black Creek’s Cameron Levins at the NCAA national championships in Des Moines, Iowa last week. As noted on the Southern Utah University website, Levins’ closing speed was on full display for a second night as the Thunderbirds’ senior out-kicked the competition over the final 150-metres to win Friday’s 5K race. Another big closing sprint Wednesday helped Levins claim the 10K title. “Levins looked as though his approach changed from his 10K when he stayed among the leaders throughout that race, this time showing patience and lurking among the last five to

six runners. The pace remained between 65 to 67 seconds per lap, allowing Levins to bide his time,” the SUU website noted. “As the race continued so did the Canadian’s position as he moved up among the top five with three laps to go. Joining him in the lead group were Arizona’s Stephen Sambu, second in the men’s 10K on Wednesday night, and Lawi Lalang, the 2011 NCAA Cross Country national champion and the 2012 NCAA 3,000- and 5,000-metre champion during the indoor season. Also in the group were UNCGreensboro’s Paul Chelimo, 13th at the cross country national championships and Minnesota’s Hassan Mead, a seventh-place finisher in the 5K during the indoor season.” Levins moved to the front of the pack on the bell lap and was pushed by Chelimo at the 150-metre mark. The duo broke away from the leaders, but at 75 metres

Levins threw on the afterburners and finished in 13:40.05 for his second national title. Chelimo finished second with a time of 13:41.04 with Lalang (13:42.20), Mead (13:42.53) and Sambu (13:43.76), rounding out the top five. “I was just aiming to sprint, basically,” said Levins of his final lap of 54.4 seconds. “I was waiting for someone to make a move on me. I didn’t do it at 200, and then Paul Chelimo came up on me and I’m like ‘okay, I have to go’, you know, he’s going to be by me and have the advantage entering the final 100-metres, so I just held him off and gave whatever I could on the final 100 metres.” The 5K/10K double title hadn’t happened since the 2009 season with All-American Galen Rupp did it running for the University of Oregon. Rupp is currently considered one of the top distance runners for the United States and will likely face Levins Continued on B3

Runner: Double victory impresses Continued from B1 this summer in London at the 2012 Summer Games. SUU head track and field/cross country coach Eric Houle was definitely impressed by Levins’ championships. “To win at any level in any field and then be consistently humble about the success and victories is what true humanity and sportsmanship is all about. This is what makes a great athlete’s legacy endure throughout time,” the coach said. “To have someone from Southern Utah win a national championship, let alone two national championships, is huge for him and his future, it’s huge for the coaching staff and it’s huge for the university,” Houle said. SUU picked up its first individual NCAA national title in track and field on Wednesday night when Levins blazed to a first-place time of 28:07.14 in the men’s 10K. Levins earned the title by running his final lap in 58.1 seconds. Levins entered the race with the second-fastest 10K time in NCAA history (and fastest in the world this year), running 27:27.96 in late May at Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invitational. The Des Moines race opened with an average pace of 67 seconds per lap but then dropped to 64 seconds per lap as Sambu, Ore-

Cam Levins (right) gon’s Luke Puskedra, Stanford’s Chris Derrick and Levins, each an All-American this season, formed a lead pack of four. Sambu led a majority of the laps during the middle of the race, with Levins hanging in fourth place before Levins, Derrick and Sambu made another break with three laps to go. The trio stayed bunched entering the final lap, but Sambu and Levins broke away with 300 metres remaining. “I knew who the contenders were going to be and I felt like I had the strongest finishing speed,” Levins told a reporter. “I just wanted to wait around; everyone else had to build their strategy off my finish.” Levins dropped the hammer at 200 metres, finishing more than two seconds ahead of Sambu (28:09.52) and breaking the 32-year-old Drake Stadium record (28:07.40) with his 28:07.14 finish. The 22-year-old said giving Southern Utah

its first national title was big motivation for him. “That was the big goal for me,” Levins said. “I wanted to leave them with that. They gave me the opportunity to run and improve. I am so thankful for that and to give back to them.” Levin’s victory was also motivation for many of the students at his alma mater in Courtenay, G.P. Vanier Secondary School, who, as luck would have it, were attending their annual athletic banquet and watching the race on the big screen. “We had a packed gym of students, parents and coaches who witnessed the race,” said Larry Street, Vanier’s athletic director. “As fate would have it, we were also inducting Cam into our Sports Wall of Fame, and did that immediately after the race. As you can imagine there were many tears of joy, and

hearts pumping big last night.” Levins’ finish earned him his fourth All-American citation this year after finishing fourth at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships, fourth in the men’s 5,000-metres and third in the men’s 3,000-metres at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. FINISH LINES Levins has A-plus Olympic-qualifying times in both the 5K and 10K and need only finish third in either event at the Canadian Olympic trials in Calgary in late June to clinch a spot in London ... he is considering running both events in London, although he favours the 5K ... the Olympic 10K is Aug. 4 with the 5K heats four days later ... Levins was added the Bowerman watch list Wednesday — the equivalent of the Heisman for longdistance runners ...

London bound It takes a lot of talent to get to the Olympics. It also takes a lot of money. Cameron Levins’ talents booked him a ticket to London for the 2012 Summer Games, now his hometown community of Black Creek is holding a fundraiser to help get his family members to England. Everyone is welcome to the Black Creek Hall on Friday, June 22 (beginning at 6 p.m.) for a barbecue to help celebrate Levins’ accomplishments Admission is free, fundraising will include the food and a silent auction. Pair of comets streak to place on Summer Games team

Seever Rondquist (left) and Brendan Hoff are BC Summer Games-bound in track and field.

Campbell River Comets Seever Rondquist and Brendan Hoff made the Zone 6 Summer Games Team with strong performances at the Garriock BC Summer Games Trials Meet in Duncan last weekend. Hoff won the 1,200 meter run and finished a strong second in the 2,000 and 800 meter run. He had personal best in all three events. Hoff has had to get in shape fast after dealing with injuries and sickness the last two weeks in May prior to the BC high school championships. But after the high schools he was able to get in some strong workouts. Rondquist and Hoff

have five weeks to prepare for the Summer Games to beat the best runners in BC who are one year older then Hoff. Hoff has so far managed to get in the top ten of all time in B.C. for the 2,000 and 1,200 meter running events. Rondquist won his javelin throw, shot put and came from behind in the discus to take the lead with a great throw and personal best, but the last thrower managed to put together a great throw also, and narrowed out Seever’s sweep of all three throwing events by .4 of a meter. It was a great weekend for Rondquist. He still has lots of training to do to improve with all three events. Rondquist

Campbell River Killer Whales nail best result in four years A strong team contingent of 33 swimmers travelled down Island to participate in the Vancouver Island Club Championship Swim Meet, held in Victoria this past weekend. CRKW reestablished some Island dominance in the pool both individually, but

most importantly, as a team. The young, rebuilding squad pulled off a small miracle, placing third overall among the many Island Clubs. It had been four years since the local squad had attained such results. CRKW swimmers rose to the occa-

sion, taking on teams from Vancouver Island and even from the Lower Mainland. At the conclusion of the meet, CRKW amassed over 2,000 team points, to place them in third spot. “Our goal going in was to attain a top four placing, and, hopefully,

with some great swimming, make a push for third place, said Coach Dave Healy. “To beat the teams that we did was a real great accomplishment and something that this young group of swimmers should be proud of “Every swimmer

regardless of skill level rose to the occasion and this is why we were successful. Not to go unnoticed was some outstanding individual performances. Melayna Beaudin was a multiple Gold Medal winner in the 10 and under category. Alongside

of her was Jasmine Skuse, who also hit the podium on numerous occasions. The 10 and under relay team consisting of the already mentioned Beaudin and Skuse, combine with Gage Windle, and Aleah Jordan for great swimming. The 10 and under “B team pulled

Willow Point Lions support kids’ summer art camps A $1,200 donation from the Willow Point Lions Club will allow 20 children from lowincome families to participate free of charge in Sybil Andrews art camps this year. Sybil Andrews art camps offer a variety of activities, including painting, drawing, colouring, gluing and sculpturing techniques; plus daily outdoor games and time to explore the beach to find treasures for craft creations. Children aged 6-12 can participate in a five-day morning or afternoon camp for $75 per child. With a dif ferent theme each week, these camps have been designed by Sharon Sanford, an art enthusiast and school

teacher – and no previous art experience is required to enjoy the camps. At the Neat-O Nature camps, from July 16 through 20, kids will make fun and useful projects from rocks, shells, plants and driftwood. Art and craft projects include faux stained glass, magnets, wall art, per-

manent sand castles, welcome garden rock, candles, hobbit houses, decoupage rock, miniature garden and fun camp scrapbooking. The Best Friends Forever camps, from July 30 through Aug. 3, will feature projects to keep and share, to treasure and give away to family and friends. Art and craft projects for this

camp include; treasure boxes, paper making, flower arrangement, silk screening, ribbon weaving, never-ending card, inspirational magnets, portraits and scrapbooking memory pages. In addition, both camps starting in July will have daily outdoor activities such as croquet, balloon badmin-

ton, bocce ball, beach ball volleyball, Frisbee golf, nature walk and scavenger hunts. During the week of Aug. 20 through 24, kids seven to 11 years will have the option of attending either full or half-day camps. The theme Blast from the Past will allow children to go back in time and experience

culture through arts, crafts and games of the past. In the morning, kids will enjoy making a record snack bowl, tabletop soccer game, bird house, shell candle holder, butterfly driftwood, bottle wrap, lino foam prints, monster or pet bookmarks and potpourri balls. The afternoon kids will make a hovercraft,

luminaries, drum, wooden plaque, nature weaving wall hanger, mask, kite, silhouette and a racing toy. To be eligible for sponsorship, families must register for the Recreation & Culture Department LIFE program and complete a request for free program form. Call 250286-1161.

BC Recreation celebrates partnership with River City Cycle Club Many mountain bikers, runners and trail walkers enjoy the trails in the Snowden Demonstration forest but up until now they may not have known who was responsible for maintaining this extensive network of trails. In May, the Recreation Division of the Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations erected signs in the Snowden Demonstration Forest acknowledging the work put in by the members of the River City Cycle Club (RCCC) who maintain the network of some 50kms of designated trails and 50km of smaller routes. The Discovery Coast Recreation District of the provincial programme “Recreation Sites & Trails BC” is responsible for trail and campsite maintenance from Fanny Bay to Bella Coola. Duncan Mactavish, the local Recreation officer said that working with the River City Cycle Club was a “great partnership” and that the club puts in “more time and money than I could afford.” The RCCC club has a trail committee who coordinate most of the trail work in the Snowden forest. Several times a year the club members come out on trail days to help with additional trail maintenance. For Snowden trail maps and more information on the River City Cycle Club go to www.rivercitycycle.ca. For more information on Recreation Sites & Trails BC go to www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca

EIGHT CRITICAL QUESTIONS EVERY SMALL BUSINESS OWNER SHOULD ANSWER

Scott Cessford Question#2: Have you discussed tax minimization strategies with your tax advisor? If you personally own an incorporated Canadian business, there are many different tax-planning strategies that can benefit you and your family. Question #3: Do you have excess cash in your corporation? Choose an appropriate investment solution based on your time horizon. If you don’t need it for the business, determine the most tax-effective ways to either withdraw. Question #4: What would happen to your family and your business if you passed away or became disabled today? Evaluate whether you have adequate insurance in the event of death or disability and plans for passing along control and ownership.

Question #5: Do you have enough assets to meet your retirement income needs? Create or update your financial plan to determine if you will have adequate assets and income to meet your tax, retirement and estate planning goals.

Duncan Mactavish (left) Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations and Jeremy Goth, River City Cycle Club (RCCC), check out the new signs crediting RCCC with helping to maintain the Snowdown Forest trails.

Question #6: Are you aware of opportunities to increase retirement income and reduce corporate tax? As an owner of a corporation, you have several strategies available to you that can help you to reduce or defer corporate income tax and enhance your retirement income. Question #7: Do you plan on selling your business to someone outside your family? There are several issues to consider, including whether the purchaser is interested in buying the assets or shares of your business.

Building education Mike Hrybko took the Mirror with him to Uganda to help build houses for orphaned children. While there, he worked alongside the nationals in building a home for many of the teachers of these children – investing in their future, building education one brick at a time.

Christmas at Disney Carson and Owen Borgfjord brought the Mirror with them on vacation with their cousins Kaitlyn and Reese McDonald in California. The Borgfjord and McDonald families had a blast together in Disneyland/California Adventure Park and watching the Vancouver Canucks play the Anaheim Ducks.
