Morton says mayor double dipping AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Regarding accusations of “double-dipping Mayor Mary Sjostrom says she is following policy. At Monday’s council meeting resident Pat Morton presented the mayor with a letter from the minister of finance outlining tax treatment of allowances for elected municipal officials. Morton says the minister supports her allegations Sjostrom is doubledipping, pointing to the one-third tax exemption. The exemption is to offset expenses officials incur while performing their duties, without the need of receipts. The letter goes on to say provinces and municipalities are shifting away from the one-third tax free ruling, requiring officials to provide proof and receipt. Thus “requiring that expense to be accounted for and directly reimbursing the elected official on the bases of actual expense incurred, the letter continues. Morton says Sjostrom is doing both – handing in receipts for expenses incurred, getting reimbursed and cashing in on the one-third tax free exemption. But Sjostrom maintains the city has practices and policies in place that out-

line council spending and reimbursement of expenditures. “We are following that long-time policy, Sjostrom said. Morton has asked Sjostrom to “simply apologize, pay back the money and move on. Sjostrom says she and council are trying to move on and deal with challenges the city is facing and opportunities for the community. Sjsotrom also stated the letter does not state the minister agreed with the allegations. But Morton maintains her position, stating enjoying the state-free exemption as well as submitting receipts and being reimbursed is the definition of “double dipping –and on the taxpayers dime. “The allowance is to cover the same expenses every employee is allowed to claim on their tax returns and even they cannot claim their meals within the municipality when they just go out for lunch with one of their co-workers, she said. “Why should taxpayers pay for local politicians and management to have meals together especially as a reimbursement when the taxpayers are already giving the politicians a non-accountable expense allowance for such expenses in addition to their remuneration?

Barkerville benefits from $2.4 million B-Ville struck it rich with $2.4 million in funding from the province. Wednesday, Premier Christy Clark announced the cash infusion to support Barkerville’s operations as Western North America’s largest historic site. “Our government is proud to support the preservation of Barkerville,” Clark said. “With more than 125 historic buildings, Barkerville is a great place for families to learn more about this important part of our history and a fabulous destination for visitors to British Columbia.” The funding is part of $21 million over three years announced in Budget 2012 for the 11 provincial heritage properties and provides support for both operations and maintenance of the sites. Each provincially owned property is operated by a site manager, such as the Barkerville Heritage Trust. “We are delighted with this commitment to three-year funding,” Trust chair Sue Morhun said. “Having financial certainty allows us to continue our stewardship of this world-class heritage attraction in the Cariboo.” This year Barkerville is celebrating the 150th anniversary
“Our government is proud to support the preservation of Barkerville.” Christy Clark, premier
of the Cariboo Gold Rush. In 1862, Billy Barker found gold at Williams Creek, a discovery that brought more than 100,000 people to the Cariboo between 1862 and 1870 to seek their fortune. In the 1860s, Barkerville was the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco and was instrumental in the founding of the Colony of British Columbia. While accompanying the premier on her visit to the Gold Rush era, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation,
Pat Bell announced exhibits featuring each of B.C.’s 11 provincially managed heritage sites will soon be on display at the Vancouver Convention Centre. “B.C. is home to an exceptional mix of tourism experiences and our heritage sites play an important role in bringing tourists to all regions of the province,” he said. “These displays will help delegates see beyond the walls of the convention centre and encourage visitors to return to B.C. and explore our world-class tourism attractions and sites.” The 11 managed sites include: Barkerville Historic Town, Fort Steele Heritage Town, The Grist Mill at Keremeos, Historic Hat Creek Ranch, Kilby Historic Site,
Point Ellice House, Cottonwood House, Craigflower Manor and Schoolhouse, Emily Carr House and Historic Yale. The displays, on a rotating basis, will be located in
the east building of the Vancouver Convention Centre and will feature one site at a time. The location of the displays will enable our government to promote these
heritage sites to a large number of local, national and international visitors. Last fiscal, the Vancouver Convention Centre had approximately 790,000 visitors.

Robert’s Roost wins lighting makeover courtesy of BC Hydro DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter BC Hydro has announced the winners of their latest Energy Fix Contest and Robert’s Roost beat out all other entries in the region. Carmelina Sorace of BC Hydro explained the criteria of the contest, whose winners won new, more efficient lighting. “To enter, they needed to be a small or medium business,” she said. “Since it was an online contest, eligible businesses needed to submit an entry and answer four questions.” Questions asked included why the business deserved the makeover and what sort of barriers the business has faced in becoming more sustainable and efficient. Robert’s Roost said they deserved the makeover because their close proximity to Dragon Lake makes them conscious of their environmental impact. “Our business would benefit greatly from a lighting upgrade and as we have travelers from around the world, it would showcase how we are using our resources efficiently and responsibly,” they said in the questionnaire. Some of the barriers
“Our business would benefit greatly from a lighting upgrade and as we have travelers from around the world, it would showcase how we are using our resources efficiently and responsibly.” Robert’s Roost owners
Robert’s Roost owners have found in reaching energy efficient goals are related to the aging of the buildings. “A lot of the lights, fixtures and wiring are severely outdated and in need of an upgrade,” their questionnaire said. “The shower house that we want to upgrade consists of 12 private bathrooms, all wired to two main switches. “They run on fluorescent lights and unfortunately, due to the way they were constructed, they need to run 24 hours a day.” The owners of Robert’s Roost also mentioned their goal of eventually becoming an eco park. “The entries were evaluated and judged,” Sorace explained. “The top two entries per region were put online for online voting.” Robert’s Roost won in Region 5, which includes 100 Mile House, Quesnel and Williams Lake. In total, the Energy Fix Contest saw 5,000 votes cast on
31 entries. Sorace said Robert’s Roost rose above the competition due to their views on the importance of being eco friendly and their focus on helping travelers become more energy efficient. “They met the criteria and are wanting to show they have sustainable practices,” she explained. “They view energy efficiency as saving on the bottom line and want to be seen as doing the right thing when it comes to sustainability.” BC Hydro has had the Energy Fix Contest once a year for the last three years and Sorace has seen an increase in response. “We definitely got more entries this year and it was mostly promoted online,” she said. Sorace said the schedule of the contest has stayed similar and businesses can start gearing up for the next round. “The contest usually runs in the spring,” she said. “Over the summer, we do the actual
makeover and we normally promote it in October, once the makeovers are done.” Winners in other regions included Northcoast Health and Fitness in Terrace, Salmar Grand Cinemas in Salmon Arm and Colonel Baker House in Cranbrook. Sorace said there are many power smart programs available to save money and the best source for information is online, www.bchydro.com/ powersmart. Over the last 13 years the outbreak of mountain pine beetle has affected an estimated 18.1 million hectares of forest throughout BC. The effects of the infestation continue to present major challenges to the forest industry and communities in BC’s central interior. The all-party Special Committee on Timber Supply was appointed by the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia to examine and make recommendations to address the loss of mid-term timber supply in the central interior. Specifically, the committee must consider recommendations that could increase timber supply. A discussion paper describing the issue and outlining possible options is available online to inform and focus public input. The committee will be holding a public hearing in Quesnel on Friday, July 6. British Columbians may also participate by sending a written submission, or a video or audio file. The deadline for public input is Friday, July 20, 2012. End Corporate Welfare! As I’ve settled back into the routine of my community ofďŹ ce, I’ve been struck by what feels like an increasing need for additional supports for seniors, people with disabilities, and vulnerable families and children. The level of need deďŹ nitely seems greater now than when I was ďŹ rst elected in 2005. I recently hosted two seniors’ care forums in Quesnel and Williams Lake where the BC Ombudsperson spoke to her reports and recommendations about seniors’ issues. The seniors at these meetings conďŹ rmed that they feel they have less government support now than in the past. Meanwhile, as the cost of living goes up, seniors’ ďŹ xed incomes don’t stretch as far as they used to, undermining their ability to be more self-sufďŹ cient. I also met with a multiple sclerosis selfhelp group this past week, and people informed me about their struggles to get the help they need to stay in their own homes and to afford the diets and supplements that will help manage their disease. Simple changes, like having to buy steri-swabs because some drug companies stopped including them with their injectable drug treatments, have caused major ďŹ nancial headaches for some people. In a resource-rich province like ours, why aren’t we able to provide more support for our most vulnerable citizens? More to the point, we are a resource-rich province in a resource-constrained world, so why have we been in a budget deďŹ cit for 16 of the past 21 years? Something’s desperately wrong with how we price our natural resources and who’s beneďŹ tting from them. This week the Premier surprised British Columbians with some long overdue changes to the income assistance system. The changes restore some of the cuts and clawbacks that Gordon Campbell initiated during his ďŹ rst term in ofďŹ ce, and they have generally been well received by poverty reduction advocates. The real welfare system that needs changing, however, is the corporate one. The tax cuts and subsidies created and supported by successive governments prevent us from raising income assistance and disability rates and increasing supports to the most vulnerable people in our society. www.bobsimpsonmla.ca

100% preventable.” – COLETTE Sister, aunt, and Program Coordinator Northern BC First Nations HIV/AIDS Coalition
HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

OPINIONS Scary stuff
T
he province’s highest voice on all things medical, Dr. Perry Kendall, made a pretty bold statement earlier this week when he claimed that MDMA should be legalized in order to be regulated. MDMA, as in ecstasy. MDMA as in the drug that claimed the lives of numerous young people over the last year. But we have to wonder what the point would be in regulating MDMA at all. This isn’t a pain killer. It doesn’t have positive qualities that make it useful in pharmacology, health care or even psychiatry. Does it? The obvious problem is that street level ecstasy can’t be trusted. When it’s cooked up in a clandestine, unregulated lab, the chemicals can vary from tab to tab, batch to batch. We’ve seen, and reported on, the dangers of the drug in the past. It’s no secret that it is the gangs who thrive on the sale of illegal drugs. But don’t forget that regulated, legal drugs created with a therapeutic intent are stolen and re-sold every single day. Drugs like Ritalin, Xanax, and of course, oxycodone are consistently sold on the black market, the latter commanding up to $35 a pill. Ecstasy is a popular rave drug, making it a ‘hit’ with party-going teens. So what would regulating the drug do? Could a teen walk into a drugstore and buy ecstasy before heading out to party, in Kendall’s theory of regulation? Probably not. But adults would, one would assume. And kids would still get their hands on it, somehow. One could argue that the same has been true for alcohol for decades. But hey, nothing bad ever came from a teenaged drinking binge, right? Wrong. Vital Stats reports that total deaths directly related to alcohol in Canada in 2000 was well over 300. That includes over intoxication, alcohol poisoning, and numerous diseases directly linked to alcoholism, such as alcoholic liver disease and chronic pancreatitis. When you factor in the deaths indirectly related to alcohol, that number jumps to 1,689. That doesn’t even include alcohol related car accidents. We’re not pushing a return to prohibition — that certainly didn’t work. But it’s laughable to suggest that regulating a drug will make the world a safer place for our children. After all, look in the right places and you can still find moonshine. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer
Where the grapes grow I
live in the Okanagan Valley, home of some incredible world class wineries, and I know nothing about wine. Naturally when I was sent some information about “The Vinos,” a wine film festival accepting commercials from wineloving filmmakers, I produced and submitted a goofy video. I based my video on what any good storyteller does: what they know. “How can you know nothing about wine when you live in wine country?” my friend from Vancouver asked. I answered that it was the same way someone might have a limited knowledge of hockey even though they live in Canada – which, coincidentally, is another crime I’m guilty of. “I’ve tried to get into it,” I responded. “I suppose it’s just not my thing.” And I have tried. Kind of. I have friends who own wineries and it’s their

On A Brighter Note passion; others have wine cellars and love to collect; and countless more of my friends love nothing more than a glass of wine or two at the end of a hard day. Me? I’d rather have Nutella on a spoon. “I have enough vices,” I said when my pal pressed me further. “I don’t need any more.” Yet as much of a wine connoisseur that I’m not, I really do love living in wine country. One of the first things we did when we moved to the Okanagan with our newborn almost 12 years ago was to take our little guy out on a wine tour with our out-of-town guests.
different than the last, and reminded me of how unique we all are in our artistic expression and life experience. It has always amazed me how you can give 20 people the exact same topic and ask them to write 500 words on that subject and every single story would be completely different. In that I find beauty. I don’t love wine. So what? Our unique likes and distastes are far more interesting than if we were all exactly the same. What kind of a world would we live in if we all ate Nutella from a spoon? More diabetic and far less sophisticated for sure. “I can’t believe you live so close to beautiful wineries like this!” my friend exclaimed while sipping Pinot Noir and taking in the magnificent sunset in the beautiful vineyard. It was then that I realized that I could have an enormous appreciation for the industry without being as passionate about the product like so many of my friends were. Putting together a last minute video about something I knew nothing about proved to be more fun than I imagined. And to my surprise, the video was a finalist in the competition. Attending “The Vinos” awards was a hoot. With so many wine lovers in attendance and such an array of wineries represented, it was great to be surrounded by their energy. The most entertaining part of the event for me was the viewing of the videos. One after another, each little film proved to be

Karl Berglund, back left and Lenore Domanko from the Salvation Army were on hand to accept more than 1,600 pounds of food from Safeway manager Steve Wadsworth, right as a result of Rene McCarthy’s, third from left, Biggest Loser 12-week program which ended in April. In total the participants lost 1,512 pounds. The pledge was for a pound of food to the food bank for every pound lost by those in the program. The biggest loser was Michelle Schwartz, who took off 46.8 pounds For those with under 25 pounds to lose, Brandee Nash lost 24 pounds and Lori Leoppky lost the most from the tape measure at 38 inches. McCarthy was thrilled with the success of the participants and said to watch for possible additional programs in 2012. However, she’s already planning for 2013’s Biggest Loser.

What picture of the King do you have? Pastor Brian Dean
Lakeview Church
Bible. His eyes are like blazing fire, His feet glowing, His voice like rushing waters. He holds stars in His hand and a sword comes out of His mouth. John was Jesus’ best friend. Yet, when he sees the risen Christ, he falls down as though dead, because of His magnificence. Too many have a poor picture of Jesus, who is celebrated
only at Christmas and Easter. When we meet the risen King, as He really is, suddenly the things that consume us – cars, houses, jobs, satellite TV etc are put in their right perspective. Often we see Jesus from another’s perspective. When we meet Him ourselves, we are changed. Then Jesus extends His hand to John, saying “Do not be afraid.” Out of unfathomable strength, Jesus extends unfathomable grace. Jesus said: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes
in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” What Jesus do you have in your mind? What picture of the King do you have? His voice could

deafen me, His glory could blind me, His justice could destroy me. Yet, He extends His hand and says “Do not be afraid.” Brian Dean is a pastor with Lakeview Church in Quesnel.

ow do we see Jesus? A man hanging on the cross? A pale-skinned, blueeyed, pigeon-chested wise man? He showed kindness to widows and the downtrodden, but is more than a social justice guru. He overturned tables in righteous anger, but is more than a reformer. Christianity is often seen as rules, ethics and morals instead of a relationship with God through Jesus. When we focus on Jesus, we start to correctly prioritize our lives. John describes Jesus in the book of Revelation in the

ohn Bateman is excited about Quesnel’s Skyfest, Aug. 4 – 5. He’s been looking forward to the event for two years and brings extensive experience and abilities to assist with the two-day air show. Bateman has a long and not-always favourable relationship with aviation. As a young child in Hayes and Slough in England during the 1950s (both villages close to Heathrow Airport) he remembers one experience where the constant noise of airplane engines drove the residents crazy. “In Hayes, they were testing the Comet airplane to see why it kept disappearing and crashing – they ran the engines all day and all night for weeks. It drove everyone crazy,” Bateman said.
“And it turned out, among other design flaws, to be the window design,” he said with a wry smile. Living in Slough meant the constant sound of planes in and out of the airport, another annoyance for locals. However, Bateman said it wasn’t all bad. He also remembers visiting the airport where new and unique aircraft would be on display. “Although I wasn’t excited about the plane, I was lucky enough to see a Bristol Type 167 Brabazon,” he said. That particular plane saw only one prototype constructed before the industry determined it was too large and expensive to be commercially viable. But his early experiences fostered a connection to aircraft that has grown and expanded to a passion for air shows.
After emigrating to Canada in 1967 (on a Boeing 707), eventually Bateman found himself living and running a business in Abbotsford. “I was amazed at the great air show in Abbotsford and wondered how they did it,” he said. “I was encouraged to volunteer to see the show from the inside.” One of the first things Bateman discovered was the Abbotsford Airport is a great facility. “ Abbotsford is now an International airport and that is certainly in part because its air show showcased the facility,” he said. “That’s what Quesnel needs. This airport is also a hidden gem.” Bateman found his passion. He loves working on air shows. For the past 30 years, Bateman has volunteered his time with the Abbotsford Air Show
including 10 years on the executive. His enthusiasm hasn’t faltered just because he now lives in Williams Lake. “I still go down to volunteer at Abbotsford,” he said. “The excitement of the planes, you meet people from all over the world and it’s a chance for the everyday person to appreciate how exciting the aerobatics are and to experience aviation.” However, there’s one skill Bateman doesn’t bring to the table – an ability to fly planes. “It was always too expensive and my family is more important,” he said. Although Bateman missed the first air show in Quesnel two years ago, when he called Skyfest organizer Barb Van Halderen offering his volunteer services she
Quesnel Olde Time
didn’t hesitate. “I said you bet,” Van Halderen said with a huge grin. Bateman brings his considerable organizational skills and wealth of experience to the Quesnel air show and Van Halderen couldn’t be happier. She knows that much of the success in planning and executing an event like the air show is dependent on volunteers. Whether they can only give an hour or would like to be part of the organizing committee, Van Halderen welcomes anyone with time to give. “Everyone has something to offer, whether they fly a plane or not. Any air show organization needs the non-flyers as well as flyers to get a good mix of perspectives,” she said. One of the Abbotsford Air Show elements that has helped grow that
event is the trade show, which provides a host of businesses exposure to large crowds and association with a successful venture, which was first organized by Bateman and he would like to develop a similar trade show at Quesnel Skyfest. He said the possibilities are endless and plans to see if the RCMP recruitment division would like to set up and possibly the Canadian Air Force. “I’d also like to see the RCMP helicopter, Air 1, on display someday at Quesnel Skyfest,” he said. Quesnel Skyfest is still looking for volunteers for the Aug. 4 – 5 event. Van Halderen said one lucky volunteer will win an aerobatic airplane ride, so she encourages those interested to contact her 250-249-5151 or visit the website skyfest2012.com to sign up.

el Boesem has been wrenching on machines for as long as he can remember and has now turned his considerable talents and skills to the Antique Machinery Park and its many displays and equipment. “I was raised on a farm with no electricity and have worked on machinery all my life,” he said. “I want to see these old machines restored so people know that history. Many people remember these machines from their own past.” Boesem is the president of the Quesnel and District Heritage Association, which manages the AMP, the organization and its members want to increase public awareness and participation in the machinery park. “We’re looking to enter into partnerships with various community groups, especially youth groups,” he said. QDHA has secured a long-term lease with the City of Quesnel, who own the facility and the grounds and with renewed good relations with city council, they are looking for provincial and federal grants to help with restoration projects.
The association is also a member of the B.C. Museum Association and have information brochures in various tourism outlets and businesses in order to increase the traffic through the museum. A very special day is planned for June 23, a Family Fun Day at the Antique Machinery Park to showcase the accomplishments of the members and to encourage others to possibly join in the rewarding work of restoration and antique management. Boesem feels there’s a wealth of potential at the park and members have been reaching out to various tourist operations to bring visitors to the unique operation. “Rocky Mountaineer management have arranged to bus train passengers to the museum should enough be interested,” he said. Boesem added they are also actively seeking corporate and commercial partners for sponsorship and participation. “Right now we have a caterpillar Model 20 crawler, circa 1926 and a caterpillar R4, circa 1932, both of which could use the love and support of someone from the community,” he said. “We’re looking for new members to embrace one of our many projects

ABOUT TOWN Order of the Eastern Star honours its own C
ariboo Chapter #71 Quesnel has had a busy time this month! This included attending Grand Chapter and an official visit from the Worthy Grand Matron and her officers. Worthy Matron Alice Mathews and Worthy Patron Del Cyr travelled with nine other officers to attend the five-day sessions. This year, the 101 year of the Order of the Eastern Star, Grand Chapter Sessions were held in Kamloops. This is a time for members of the Order to renew old friendships, make new friends and conduct their official business. Besides official business matters, the session honours its delegates and its members who have been in the Order for more than 50 years. Among those honoured this year was Cariboo Chapter’s Sister Betty Eyolfson for 57 years of dedicated service. Our Grand Representative to Missouri, Brother Mark Heinzelman, was joined by his American counterpart, Ed Sprenkle and his wife Berniece from Stockton, Missouri. The two of them participated in the ceremonial Cavalcade of Flags. Church service on the Sunday before official opening ceremonies honoured two of Cariboo Chapter’s departed members, Sister Irene Lorance and Sister Lil Walker. It was a very touching time to remember the more than 100 members throughout the province who have passed away this year. After their installation, the Worthy Grand Officers then proceed to visit each Chapter in the province and the Yukon. At that time, the records of the chapter and its finances are reviewed by the Worthy Grand...and as always, our ‘books’ were in impeccable order. Grand Chapter ended on Thursday, May 31 and members wended their way home just in time to start preparations for the Worthy Grand Matron’s official visit. Monday, June 4, Cariboo Chapter had a School of Instruction and in the evening the official visit took place. This year, Worthy Grand Matron Jacquie Wowk and Worthy Grand Patron Jim Firbank honoured Sister Kathy Maxwell. Sister Kathy has been a member of the Eastern Star for 53 years, joining Star on May 25, 1959. The specific honour accorded to Sister Kathy was The Owl Award. This is a new award for a member who has worked tirelessly but never held the office of Worthy Matron. After the meeting, members partook in a delicious repast, bought tickets on a raffle for a variety of items and relaxed after a job well- done. Grand Chapter and official visit were a huge success and it is onwards and upwards for another year. If you, or any member of your family, has Masonic affiliation, consider joining our organization. We are a welcoming group and are always looking for new members. Honey Affleck is a member of the Cariboo Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

Although Kathy has been a faithful, hard-working member for Cariboo Chapter for many years, she has never held the office of Worthy Matron. During her term, our Worthy Grand Matron wants to honour all those members who have supported and worked for their Chapters without ever having held that office.

Ami Sukisaki enjoys a game during Family Day. Jonas Gagnon photo
Japanese volunteer loves Quesnel jogging paths JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Hailing from a small town on Shikoku Island in Ehime prefecture, Ami Sukisaki has recently arrived in Quesnel to volunteer at the Shiraoi house. This isn’t her first trip to Canada, but it is her first trip off the Canadian tourist route. “Six years ago, I came here and I really loved Canada, I wanted to come back,” she said. That first vacation here was a university graduation trip, hitting all the often toured places including Vancouver, Toronto, Victoria and Niagara Falls. Now though, after two months learning English in Vancouver, Sukisaki has hopped off the tourist trail into the wilderness of B.C. The city itself, though, she finds similar to her home town of Tobe. Both are small towns, off the beaten path – Tobe is on a completely different island than the major cities of Japan. Shikoku, one of the four main islands of Japan, is just off the south-west coast of Honshu, the main island that is home to both Tokyo and Kyoto. Though she hasn’t seen much of the city, she has found the riverwalk. “It’s beautiful. I really like the riverwalk. I love jogging so I like to go jogging on it,” she said. There are a few differences that have surprised her. The cooler weather has been something of a relief for Sukisaki. “It’s so hot and humid in Japan,” she said. “I like this weather.” More surprising than the weather, however, is the sun’s changing schedule. “In Japan the sun sets at six o’clock, in Quesnel, maybe 10.” Japan, due to it’s placement near the equator, does not experience the lengthening and shortening of days that northerners are used to. Sukisaki has another three months to see and experience all that the north has to offer. In those three months she is looking forward to participating in a festival, like the Canada Day festival, as well as going to Barkerville.

Too often we underestimate the power of our touch, a smile, a listening ear or a small act of kindness. All of these have the potential to turn lives around in our fight to end cancer. Our heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude, 2012 Relay For Life Leadership Team

good community, while nice to have in good times, is indispensable when times take a darker turn. It is during those darker turnings that a tight community will lend support and prove its value over and over again. Like any good community then, the Quesnel barrel racers have stepped up to take care of one of their own. Kelly Garvin has been around the Kersley Horse Club long enough that she has become an intrinsic part of it. Most recently she’s been involved through her daughter. “Kelly and her famous smile became a familiar site in the grandstands, cheering for all the competitors as well as her daughters,” Melissa Sword wrote in an email. Garvin showed great determination working with her daughter’s horses to get them in podiumwinning shape. Now though, she faces a much more difficult challenge in
the sickness which has her in the hospital. In this time of need her community rallied around her, doing what they do best: racing horses. This time, though, they had a purpose bigger than winning, Chelsea Brears, president of the Kersley Horse Club and one of the organizers of the event, said. “From very young, doubling with mom, to grandmothers and grandfathers, we rode for Kelly Garvin this weekend and we are proud,” Brears
said. The outpouring of love and help from the community at the fundraiser was great enough to shock Brears. “It was unreal–we were blown away,” she said. Saturday and Sunday riders paid their fees to compete in barrel racing and poles, many of whom either had no intention of racing, the fee then, in effect, becoming a donation, or waived their right to their winnings, donating them, instead, to Kelly Garvin and her fam-
ily. The riding fees, however, weren’t the only donations to the family. There was also a silent auction people could bid on, with products from local retailers. The money from those who didn’t ride, or waived their cash prizes, along with the silent auction, was approximately $8,000 dollars, Brears said. In and around the barrel racing, others did their part to push that total up higher.
The waiting staff of Mr. Mikes donated tips, Robyn Mumford donated half of the price she was asking for photos during the event and, finally, Tom and Melissa Sword donated a horse to be auctioned off. All told the donations, including the riding fees and silent auction, have piled up to over $11,000, though the number is still not set in stone as there is still some math that needs to be done. Participants in the fundraiser were more varied than the average barrel race would suggest. Mother, with young children in front of them on the horse, trotted their way around barrels. Cowboys who had never barrel raced tried their hands at the unknown sport, while ladies who were comfortable on a fast horse held the reins for children and jogged around the barrels beside them. On Sunday they did away with horses entirely to run the course and see how those horse felt. So, though the cause
was serious, the mood at the fundraiser felt joyful. “We tried to keep it light for the family,” Brears said. Adding later, “It wasn’t for the book – it was just about making money for the family” And, as the family faces a long, expensive battle the money will help alleviate financial woes so the Garvin family can focus on what’s important. Brears visited Garvin after the event to tell her the good news and give her a card from the Kersley club. “She gave us a big smile,” said Brears. If you want to help keep that smile on Garvin’s face you can donate at the Credit Union, who has set up an account for her. Donations should be made out ot the the Kelly Garvin Healing Fund, the account number for which is 80313536. Bracelets are being sold at the Credit Union and also at Attitude South Hair salon. The bracelets are $5 and say ‘Fight Like a Mom Kelly Garvin’. More photos on A23.

Ryder Hesjedal is the only Canadian cyclist to win one of the three major European Tours, which includes the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España. And in the early two thousands he trained with Quesnel’s own Juerg Feldman. Feldman runs FaCT Canada Consulting in town with Herb Chlebek. FaCT is a sports consulting and training business and Feldman is the head of Science, Technical Support and Customer Training. He is no stranger to training high level athletes, having coached the Swiss Nordic Combined Ski Team leading to the Calgary Olympics in 1988 among others. John Courtney, one of the managers of Cyclologic, and a sometimes recipient of Feldman’s training, was there in Italy during the Giro and was super happy to see a Canadian on the top of the podium. “All I can say is that having the good fortune to be there to cheer Ryder on, to ride some of the same mountain passes, to get swept up in the excitement of the Italian fans and to proudly fly the only Canadian flag on the final day – that was absolutely one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It has been amazing to see the growth of cycling in Canada in the last five years and I can only hope that Ryder’s accomplishment will continue to raise the profile of the sport,” Courtney said

Last Saturday, bikers of all stripes gathered at the Maple Park Mall to go for a ride and raise money for the Amata House. Marc Valois, an organizer of the event, was happy with the ride. "We had a great time, a really good turnout and great weather," he said. The motorcyclists covered many miles, first heading south, before turning their
bikes around and heading north of town, then trailing back in to finish. They met in the morning at Maple Park Mall, went south to Kersley, toured around Dragon Lake to Murphy's Pub before heading on to Sylvia's Cafe. They then continued on north, all the way up to Ten Mile Lake, before turning around to finish in town at the Cariboo Hotel to relax
Cariboo League The Cariboo League played their penultimate tournament last weekend in Williams Lake. Coming down off the high of the play downs the teams didn’t miss a beat as they rolled into Williams Lake. The U14 Boys played exceptionally well, coming together better than they had in the rest of the season to rout two Prince George teams. The first game they won 4-3 and then gained momentum to roll over the second Prince George team in the afternoon 10-1. The youngest girls, U12, held their own over the weekend. Their first game, against Williams Lake, was a shut out at 4-0 for the Quesnel girls. They struggled against 100 Mile House, however and were down 1-0 very late into the game until a free kick tied it up. “Lillian Beuschel managed to tie it up in the last two minutes off a really nice free kick,” Gilbert Schotel, the girl’s coach, said. Playing without any spares due to injuries, the U14 girls fought any weariness to come out of the weekend with two wins. The first match they won handily, keeping the ball from ever seeing the back of their net, while managing to hit the back of William Lake’s four times. Against 100 Mile in the afternoon, the girls kept their heads up and came out with a 3-1 score in their favour. The U16 girls played two different Williams Lake teams and came away with two ties, 1-1 and 2-2, respectively.
and chat. The event went off perfectly and all the bikers were happy to help the community out. The organizers for the event were well backed up by the community and have a long list of people to whom Valois, on behalf of the event, would like to extend a special thanks. The 14th annual Quesenl Charity Motorcycle Poker Run 2012 raised $746.

Three-potato salad provides an unusal twist on a traditional dish For many Canadians eating in-season means trying a variety of new and healthy dishes. This delicious twist on a classic potato salad recipe adds a new flavour to your summer barbecues. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 14 minutes Ingredients: 3 lbs. assorted potatoes (all-purpose, red and/or sweet potatoes or yams), unpeeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 120 mL (1/2 cup) mayonnaise 15 mL (1 tbsp) Dijon mustard 60 mL (1/4 cup) sliced green onions 4 slices bacon, crispcooked and crumbled (optional) Instructions: Cover potatoes with water in a 4-quart saucepot; bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer 14 minutes or until potatoes are tender; drain and cool slightly. Combine
the Hellmann’s mayonnaise with mustard in a large bowl. Add potatoes and onions and toss gently. Season to taste, if desired, with salt and ground black pepper. Serve chilled or at room temperature. Just before serving, sprinkle with bacon if desired. Did you know? Our bodies do not produce vegetable-based omega-3, therefore we have to include it daily through foods like canola and flaxseed oil, or products made of these such as mayonnaise. Fat helps our bodies to absorb a range of vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K. Complete nutritional information (including sodium content) can be found at www. hellmanns.ca along with more tasty recipes to keep your family on their toes. –www.newscanada.com
