"Nutter's; looking after you from the inside out."

30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Thirty years ago Dr. Jim Cranston along with a local partner, started Nutter’s Bulk & Natural Foods in a humble 900 square foot space in Medicine Hat, Alberta. After the first year in business, it was apparent consumers were ready to adopt the idea of shopping in bulk and the new variety of products it offered. In 1983, the partners moved their small bulk food store into the high-profile 5,000 square foot location they are still in. What began as one store quickly turned into 11 franchise stores in Alberta and in 1984 with growth came the need to make operational, marketing and management changes. It was at this time that Dr. Cranston’s daughter Lynn Cranston and his nephew, Donald Cranston, joined to manage the family business, along with a great franchise group across Western Canada. Denise Pallesen has owned and operated the Cranbrook Nutter’s store for the past 15 ½ years. She is very proud of the relationships with her customers and would like to extend a special thank you to all for their many years of loyal support. Denise would like to invite everyone to stop by for many great savings during the 30th Anniversary Celebration. Don’t forget to fill out an entry form for many great prizes and to share a piece of anniversary cake on June 23 at 1pm.

natural health

by Trent Brereton, ND

Allergies It is that time of year again when those who are plagued by plants begin to suffer the telltale symptoms of seasonal allergies: sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and general misery. Many simply suffer through the next few months, making the growing season their least favourite time of year. Others become slaves to antihistamines or natural medicines to keep the symptoms at bay. A third option is to normalize your response to the plant or pollen that you are reacting to using a gentle, safe, non-invasive and highly effective technique called intolerance elimination. This approach uses a very modest looking instrument that imparts a painless, low amperage current into the body through specific acupuncture points to allow the body to re-establish balance, or homeostasis. When the body is in a state of homeostasis it is able to differentiate between benign environmental agents, nutrients and toxins. When not in homeostasis, the body might see a pollen or weed as a toxin and react accordingly (this is also true of

food reactions). It is this non-homeostatic response that causes distressing seasonal and food allergy symptoms. Once the body has restored homeostasis, it no longer responds to pollens or foods as stressors. Rather, it responds to them for what they are, normal substances, and symptoms disappear. The first step is to identify the stressing agent. For many this is easy: "when I mow the lawn I sneeze and itch" ("when I eat dairy I bloat") while for others the specific offender is unknown. When the offending agent is not known, a variety of testing methods can be used to identify the cause of the problem. Once identified, a vial of the offending agent is placed on a conductive plate on the instrument and a probe is applied to specific acupuncture points on the face, torso and feet. In 50% of cases only one treatment is needed to restore homeostasis and alleviate symptoms. With severe reactions or more complex cases as many as four treatments may be necessary to restore homeostasis to a particular substance.

Free Allergy Seminar Join Dr. Brereton to learn more about allergy elimination. Wed. June 20th, 7pm RSVP space is limited.

Tough drinking and driving penalties now back in full force Submitted B.C.’s tough administrative penalties for drinking and driving return to the roadside on June 15, backed by a more fair, rigorous roadside and appeal process that became law this spring. “Drinking drivers who don’t consider the dangers they present to other road-users should be asking themselves whether they really think it’s worth hundreds or thousands of dollars in penalties to continue their dangerous behaviour. Of¿cers across B.C. welcome the resumption of IRPs, and enforcement activities mean it’s a matter of when - not if - you will face extremely serious consequences if you choose to drink and drive,” said Chief Const. Peter Lepine, president, B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police. The procedural changes preserve the lifesaving, deterrent value of Canada’s toughest provincial penalties for alcohol-impaired driving, which ¿rst came into effect in September 2010. The B.C. government’s goal of reducing impaired driving fatalities by 35 per cent by the end of 2013 has already been surpassed. Our most-recent analysis shows that we have signi¿cantly exceeded the initial targets. Compared to the average over the previous ¿ve years, alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths have dropped by 44 per cent since the law came into force- with an estimated 71 lives saved. The amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act respond to a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that the original administrative review process did not provide a driver with the ability to meaningfully challenge the “fail” result of a roadside breath test. The amendments also enhance the fairness of both roadside and appeal processes. The following conditions now apply, regardless of whether a driver provides either a “warn” or “fail” breath sample at the roadside: * Police must advise drivers of their right to a second breath test on a second approved screening device (ASD). In the past, of¿cers were not legally required to inform drivers of this right. * Police must tell

drivers that the lower of the two readings will prevail. Previously, the results of a second test prevailed, whether higher or lower. * Grounds for administrative review now include the reliability of

the ASD results, whether police advised the driver of his or her right to a second test, whether police conducted that second breath test on a second ASD, and whether the IRP was issued on the basis of the

lowest reading. These grounds reÀect the expanded requirements of police of¿cers at the roadside. * Police of¿cers must provide sworn reports to the superintendent of motor vehicles for

every immediate roadside prohibition (IRP) they issue - increasing the evidentiary standard of the of¿cers’ submissions. * Police of¿cers must also submit documentation attesting to the cali-

bration accuracy of the ASD device or devices that were used. These changes mean, effective June 15, IRPs resume as an alternative to the full Criminal Code process for drivers found in excess of

the legal limit of .08 per cent blood-alcohol content at the roadside- the default approach for police since the court ruling last November.

Arson to Pickup

On Feb 12, 2012, 1725 hrs, a report of a burnt abandoned pickup was received by the police. The truck was found by Hidden Valley Rd near the gravel pit. The police attended the scene and determined that a 2007, D3500, Dodge, dually pickup had been totally destroyed by the arson. The owner of the truck was out of the country on a cruise at the time. Upon his return from vacation the owner stated he had left the vehicle at South City Auto for repairs on February 8th, with the keys in drop box. He left for vacation on February 9th. Employees at the repair shop reported they had never seen the vehicle at all. This indicates there are two crime locations, the Âżrst where the vehicle was stolen from and the second where it was burnt. The replacement value of the destroyed Dodge pickup is estimated at $28,000. Do you know anyone or any location where this type of activity is occuring or have information on any other crime, if so; Crime Stoppers will pay a reward up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this crime. City’s wastewater services improvements benefit environment Cranbrook residents will now bene¿t from improved wastewater services and a cleaner environment, thanks to signi¿cant upgrades made to the City’s wastewater system. Federal, provincial and municipal representatives were on hand today to celebrate the completion of this project that involved the installation of two new disinfection facilities, a new phosphorus removal facility, a new lined storage pond, a new aeration system, and the construction of nearly four kilometres of large-diameter pipeline to a permanent new outfall structure in the Kootenay River. The outfall structure will enable the controlled discharge of highquality-treated efÀuent to the Kootenay River, improving the health and safety of local citizens and protecting the environment. “These wastewater infrastructure upgrades are great news for the community and our environment,” said David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay–Columbia, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “I am pleased that this project created local jobs and will support the long-term health and well-being of families, residents and workers in Cranbrook.” “In resolving to improve the city’s wastewater processing, Cranbrook demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, and its determination to make this happen by engaging funding partners,” said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “I would like to express my sincere thank you to the federal and provincial governments for partnering with us on this important project,” said Wayne Stetski, Mayor of the City of Cranbrook. “The citizens of Cranbrook look forward to many more cost sharing initiatives in the future to repair or replace our aging infrastructure. I would also like to express my appreciation to city staff for their hard work in securing the co-operative funding and for delivering on the much needed upgrades.” The governments of Canada and British Columbia contributed

over $4.8 million each through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The City of Cranbrook contributed the remaining $4.8 million toward the total eligible project

costs of $14.4 million. As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund supported more than 4,100 infrastructure projects across

the country, including more than 440 key infrastructure projects in British Columbia. Investing in infrastructure is a key part of the Government of

Canada’s plan to create jobs, generate economic growth and ensure longterm prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada’s leadership, and our strong econom-

ic and ¿nancial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other countries. Canada has been a leader among

G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 750,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.

National Aboriginal Day June 21

Celebrating aboriginal culture Submitted National Aboriginal Day is held every year on June 21. Established by the Canadian government and organized in concert with national aboriginal organizations, this thematic day aims to raise public awareness of Canada’s ¿rst peoples as well as their undeniable contribution to our society. Aboriginals hold an important place in our culture, having inhabited this country long

before Europeans arrived in North America. At the beginning of the European colonization, aboriginals were able to teach the new arrivals many things about surviving in climate conditions and on terrain unfamiliar to them. C E L E B R AT I N G CULTURE National Aboriginal Day takes place on the summer solstice, the longest day in the year, and celebrates the

culture and heritage of aboriginal people. This day also helps us to become more familiar with the extraordinary cultural diversity of the Inuit, the Metis, and the First Nations. What is particularly interesting about this event is that it allows us to discover the different achievements of indigenous peoples in areas as varied as agriculture, the environment, and the arts. LEARN MORE

In order to learn more about the different cultures and traditions of the aboriginal peoples whose heritage has shaped this country, Canadians from every background are invited to participate in the festivities and activities that will take place from coast to coast. The participation of young people in these events is crucial in order to safeguard aboriginal cultures for future generations.

Have a great day of celebration to all Aboriginal, Metis and Inuit entrepreneurs!

Alfred Melville Larrabee Sept. 22, 1934-May 30, 2012 With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Alfred Melville Larrabee at Cranbrook Regional District Hospital on May 30, 2012. Mel leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Sylvia; sons Dale and Michael; daughter Christina (Nate) Bue all of Cranbrook; his beloved grandchildren: Georgia, Montana and Jasper; his son Darcy Larrabee and daughter Wilma Edro; grandson Randy Larrabee of Golden, BC and foster daughter Wanda (Mark) Thorgenson of Kelowna, BC. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Beatrice Larrabee; sister Kathy Wilson; brother Gordon and grandson Steven Erdos. Mel enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, tinkering in the backyard working on cars. Later in life his greatest enjoyment came when he was spending time with his three grandchildren "spoiling" them. Mel enjoyed helping others, never asking for anything in return. Enjoyed having friends over for coffee, everyone was welcome with a smile and "how are ya," with a "don't forget where we live," when they left. We will fondly remember his smile and the twinkle in his eye. There will be a celebration of life held on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the Salvation Army, 533 Slater Road, Cranbrook from 1pm to 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.

Be a daring decorator You’re unique; it shows in your attitudes, in your clothing, in your lifestyle. But does the interior of your home also reflect your personality? For your home to become an extension of yourself all you have to do is follow your passions, your interests and your tastes! Passions are a fertile source of inspiration. You’re a globe-trotter and you’d like to redecorate your living room? The souvenirs from your travels should take pride of place or an African mask brought home from Senegal could be the focal point of the decor. Is photography your passion? Then why not cover your walls and your furniture with your most beautiful creations, carefully arranging the different frames. Old cameras could be used as book-ends, blending in other reminders of this pastime which so enthrals you. Your interests can also guide you in your choice

of decorations. For example, if you’re inspired to become more Zen, stones, a fountain and other objects representative of this philosophy could be key elements in your bedroom or your bathroom.

Your tastes can also be used as a starting point when decorating a room. For example, if lilac is your absolutely favourite colour, you could be daring and paint one or more walls this colour, adding cushions and other fabrics to bring out this shade which you love so much.

Home security There is no greater investment than your home. It offers a safe haven from the inÀuences of the world, a place to relax and spend time with those who we care about the most. But, what happens when an intruder violates our space? Are you protected? What happens when someone cuts the wires to your home to get in without a siren sounding? Who will show up? If you are injured, will anyone know? There are many types of intrusion alarms on the market, but the key is to have a quality installation and cover all areas of your home. Systems can be installed which cover glass

breaks, door entries, and a host of other areas which insure the sanctity of your home or business. Which system and peripherals are right for you can be discussed with your alarm installer. A professional company will offer ULC monitoring which insures the security of your information and the integrity of your system. In addition, this type of monitoring typically results in a discount by your insurance provider to your homeowners’ policy. Contingency plans can be pre-arranged with your security provider to make certain you are protected in the worst of situations.

Quality companies will also advise you when there are issues with your system and if you need servicing or upgrades. Provisions can be made for continuous coverage in the event of a power failure or if your power lines are cut. There should be no question left to chance when it comes to protecting your most valuable assets. Security system products today are advancing to cover virtually any scenario. Smoke and low temperature alarms can easily be added to a security system and this peace of mind is invaluable. Systems can facilitate full coverage by the monitoring station so when you are not at home a sensor will automatically alert a person in the ULC sta-

tion. Then, a quali¿ed person will take action to notify the appropriate authorities and keep your belongings safe. This type of coverage can be customized to suit whatever best suits your needs. If you are going on an extended trip, for instance a fully licensed and bonded security guard service can be contracted. If an alarm sounds and a security guard is called, these professionals are trained to deal with whatever issues may arise. They are bonded, licensed and insured and a reputable company will be covered by a con¿dentiality agreement with their security of¿cers. Vacant property checks will enhance your peace of mind if you are on vacation. A physical visit when a low tem-

perature alarm sounds can save you thousands of dollars in damages. You can leave a list of your preferred contacts and even service providers like plumbers, electricians and so on. It is much better not to leave your security to chance. At Top Security Ltd, it has been our experience that choosing a local company for your security requirements means reliable service with an accountability held by members of our community. Please feel free to contact us for any of your security questions at 250-4267943 or 426-1137. Everything you expect in a Don’t have the space for everything minivan plus extra efficiency in your truck? Just change it.

PHOTO SUBMITTED

You don’t have to be a Michael Bay fan to appreciate the quick-change features of the Chevrolet Avalanche. PHOTO SUBMITTED

With its revised suspension and low-rolling-resistance tires, coupled with a 3.6-litre V6 engine, the 2012 Grand Caravan is fuel-ef¿cient, without sacri¿cing interior room. Overall: After delivering a highly successful mid-life update for the 2011 model year to its benchmark family machine, Dodge is staying put with the big Grand Caravan. Drivetrain: Corporate 3.6-litre V6 with six-speed automatic transmission. With new product offerings from Honda, Toyota and Nissan that bend preconceptions of what a minivan should look like, the Grand Caravan still looks like a minivan should. It now drives a little differently with a revised suspension topped with low-rolling-resistance tires to help prop up fuel economy. Along those lines, the 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V6

that produces 283 horsepower and six-speed automatic transmission doesn’t really sacri¿ce fuel economy. Inside, you’ll ¿nd the usual dozen or so cupholders plus a variety of small-item bins and pockets (including dual glove boxes) that showcase the vehicle’s utility. The standard third-row bench seat can be power folded (optional) to create a Àat load Àoor. The Stow ‘n’ Go feature, now larger and more comfortable this model year with a one-touch-down feature, provides out-of-sight storage bins when the second-row seats are left in their upright positions. For the 2011 model year, the interior was ¿tted with a redesigned gauge

cluster, center console and better soft-touch. For 2012 is a new price-leading Canadian Value Package (CVP), joining the current four trim levels of SXT Stow ‘n Go, Crew, Crew Plus and the sporty R/T. The CVP brings the Grand Caravan well under a sub-$30K starting price and includes the basic features and safety systems you’d expect. At the top end, R/T and Crew models get an extra $800 worth of content, including remote start, a power liftgate and alarm.

Overall: One of the only vehicles that’s able to transform without director Michael Bay’s help. Drivetrain: One V8 engine/transmission combo drives two- and all-wheeldrive versions. If you’re a fan of the Transformers movie series, you’ve likely noticed that most of the Autobot heroes transform in GM vehicles (a certain yellow Camaro immediately comes to mind). However, the Chevrolet Avalanche is the only real-life quick-change artist that’s able to expand its cargo-carrying capacity, virtually at will, without any movie effects. So, why isn’t the Avalanche in any of the movies? Perhaps because its cover would already be blown since its unique Midgate wall splits the box and passenger compartments. With the rear seat and Midg-

ate folded Àush to the Àoor, the cargo-bed length increases enough to take a standard eight-foot-long sheet of plywood, allowing transport of all sorts of large and bulky items. Both rear- and allwheel-drive models come with the 5.3-litre cam-inblock V8 engine making 310 horsepower, which is enough to move the 2,500-kilogram Avalanche with adequate urgency when required. Torque peaks at 335 pound-feet at a fairly lofty 4,400 revs per minute. The six-speed automatic transmission, in concert with Chevrolet’s Active Fuel Management system that shuts down half the cylinders under light or no-load conditions, should help to stretch your fuel dollars. A single-speed transfer case is standard on the fourwheel-drive model while a two-speed transfer case with

a low range is optional for those interested in serious off-road travel. Avalanche arrives well equipped, but there are some interesting options including touchscreen satellite navigation, rear parking assist, rearview camera, an active suspension system (that instantly adjusts the shock damping to suit road conditions) and poweroperated running boards that automatically extend from the body when the doors are opened. With three new paint colours to choose from and restyled 20-inch chrome wheels, the Avalanche still looks fresh. Interior features include USB connectivity in the center console for portable devices such as Apple’s iPod media player. “Autobots . . . roll out!”
