Dennis Eastman’s life ended when he was 23 years old. The Nelson native was an amicable young man. He was mild tempered, athletic and he loved life. But like many young men he was searching for his place in that life and he got mixed up with the wrong crowd, a crowd that led him even further astray after his mom, Sherry, died of bone cancer. At the time he was working at a sawmill in Revelstoke. Coming home one night on a day off in Nelson he had too much to drink, missed a curve in the road in his car, took out 60 feet of guardrail and crashed his vehicle at the foot of High Street. Dennis Eastman did not die that night, but the life he knew did. When he woke up from a coma 60 days later with a brain injury and numerous broken bones, he spent the next year relearning how to walk, talk and develop basic motor skills, and the well-adjusted young man was gone.

It was replaced by a man who could not hold his rage, a job, or to communicate with others and he ended up on the street and dealing with addictions. For that fact, Dennis Eastman wished he had died at the scene 23 years ago.

I would have died,� he said, 23 years later. That night began 16 years of what could only be described as a search for a geographical cure, as Eastman spent the years trying to solve the dilemma of his new life with a brain injury, battling depression and suicidal depression to boot, moving over 90 times. His life mirrored the sometimes insurmountable hurdles thrown at those with a brain injury: being in and out of the psychiatric ward or jail; misunderstood and dismissed by social service agencies because he was too difficult to deal with; facing government red tape and unhelpful bureaucrats—and all because of his brain injury. But that is the nature of life with a brain injury, said West Kootenay Brain Injury Association outreach worker

The government system is onerous to deal with, so arduous many people become discouraged and fall by the wayside. “It’s hard enough for people without a brain injury to deal with the government, but it’s even harder for a person with a brain injury,� she said. “There are so many hoops for people with a brain injury to jump through just to get help, and the government doesn’t make it any easier for them.� For years the pattern was the same as Eastman would find a place, get situated, sometimes find work, but then something would happen. Invariably Eastman would get angry, he would embarrass himself, and then would have to pack up and move and try somewhere else. He tried to work several times after the accident and found he could not hold down a job. He would get frustrated

and had trouble focusing and concentrating on what was at hand. If he didn’t quit he was fired. So welfare became his bread and butter, as did homelessness, addictions to drugs like heroin and alcohol, and attempts at suicide became frequent, with depression eventually coming home to roost. “If you suffer from mental illness, you have depression thrown in,� he said. Eastman fell through the cracks of the system. For 16 years he battled with ICBC to get some kind of compensation for his brain injury. There was a clause in the Insurance Act that stated if anyone sustained a brain injury in a car accident, drinking and driving or not, they were entitled to some money for rehabilitation. Although Eastman could walk and talk, drive a vehicle, he could not hold down a

A Trail man who allegedly robbed the Uptown Liquor Store in Castlegar had one night to enjoy a couple of drinks from his plunder. On Friday evening 34-year-old Trevor Isenor allegedly stole a bottle from the liquor store, but Castlegar police did not identify him at the time and therefore did not make an arrest. Saturday, Castlegar RCMP received a tip that the suspect who had stolen the liquor the day before was at Shopper’s Drug Mart in Castlegar. A security officer who recognized Isenor from the surveillance tape in Shopper’s Drug Mart reported the sighting to police around 11 a.m., according to Sgt. Laurel Mathew of the Castlegar RCMP. When confronted by police, Isenor resisted arrest and ripped the officer’s radio from his shoulder during a brief struggle with police. “The male was able to rip the officer’s radio off of his shoulder, taking away the officer’s ability to request backup,� said Sgt. Mathew in a press release. However, several bystanders made calls to the RCMP to notify them of the altercation. A police search of the suspect revealed that he was in possession of a bottle of cologne that had been stolen from Shopper’s Drug Mart prior to the arrest.

Motorcycle Show and Shine supports charities BY BREANNE MASSEY Times Staff

Revamping your bike is only one aspect of the first Waneta (Trail) Rotary Motorcycle Show and Shine. The event is being geared to flesh out two local charities—Rotaplast and the Greater Trail Hospice Society—with a ride, bike show and breakfast. There will be awards for each bike class, the best metric cruiser, Harley, vintage and more. The charity ride takes place on Saturday at the Waneta Plaza between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. “This is the first time we’ve ever had the event here,� said Robert Hawton, an event organizer from the local Rotary club. “We’re certainly hoping for a good turn out

REGIONAL Show and Shine scheduled for this Saturday FROM PAGE 1 of contestants, as well the public coming to see the bikes on display.” The event begins with a pancake breakfast at Waneta Plaza and is followed by the Show and Shine between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Registration for this portion of the Show and Shine takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on the morning of the event. Anybody can participate in this part of the event for a $10 entry fee, and invitations have been sent to motorcycle clubs in the region. “As a club, we felt that we felt that Rotaplast was a fairly worthwhile charity to support,” explained Hawton. “As well as the Greater Trail Hospice Society. Word has gone out to the different motorcycle clubs and it sounds like it’s of interest.” All of the proceeds raised during the Show and Shine will be contributed to Rotaplast and the Greater Trail Hospice Society. The Greater Trail Hospice Society is focused on modern palliative care and end-of-life care. Contributions from this event will help them by contributing to some local initiatives, like supporting the programs for people at the end of their lives and public education. “Because we’ve become a nonprofit society this past year, we’re really dependent on the community so that we can support the community,” said Brenda Hooper, a representative of the Greater

is stepping up to the plate and trying to raise some funds” to help them. “I really wish them well with this adventure,” said Hart. “The clubs in our district have to raise $50,000 to sponsor half of this mission so we’re in high fundraising gear, but we feel confident that we’ll be able to achieve that goal.” The local chapter of Rotaplast is planning to work in India between

Life finally back on track Molotov cocktail tossed FROM PAGE 1 job and needed help, he just couldn’t seem to communicate that. He grew frustrated quite easily, a frustration that often spawned an angry, ‘F’-word riddled outburst. In a government office filled with the maze of bureaucracy, such outbursts were frequent and often resulted in Eastman dealing with police rather than government officials. “I see life black and white now, I don’t see the colours in it. They (government) don’t want to see that,” he said. “(With government) you have to play the waiting game. And the hardest thing for a person with a brain injury to do is to wait.” Eastman said he was never told what he was entitled to. Instead, he had to try and find a counselor who was knowledgeable about the system and who could point him in the right direction. He found one. It took him 16 years to

get ICBC annuity through Canada Life, to get them to classify him as not being able to return to work. It will now last until he is 65 when he would receive pension. His life is now on track. He hasn’t been depressed in years now that his medications have been correctly sorted out. And he’s been in a relationship that has changed his life around, living in Salmo for the last few years in a house he can finally call his own. Eastman hoped his story could shed some light on the difficulty of living with a brain injury during national Brain Injury Awareness month. “When you ain’t got nothing, life is pretty hopeless ... but no matter what, you have to keep trying and fighting and hoping it will get better,” he said. “Now life is making up for all those years of nothing.”

An early-morning arson attempt on the Midway RCMP Detachment Building was thwarted on Monday. And it took only a matter of hours for the RCMP to arrest a 43-year-old Grand Forks male in connection with the incident. It began at 12:10 a.m. on Monday morning when an officer, working inside the detachment, “heard a loud noise and a saw a bright flash where something appeared to have hit the office window,” said Kootenay Boundary

Regional Detachment Staff Sergeant Dan Seibel in a press release. The officer looked outside and saw a male suspect pick up a flaming bottle, which was believed to have initially been tossed at the building, and throw it at an unoccupied police vehicle. Seibel said in the release that the bottle broke and spilled its contents igniting the surface of the vehicle on fire. The officer in the building confronted the suspect, who ran to a nearby vehicle and fled the

scene. The officer noted the vehicle’s licence plate, called for assistance and extinguished the fire. After an initial search for the culprit, officers conducted a further investigation early Monday morning and arrested the person believed to be responsible. In the release, Seibel credited the officer on duty for his quick reactions and expressed relief that the Molotov cocktail didn’t go through the window and cause greater damage to the building as well as potential injuries to the officer.

Woman in right-to-die case says she has made no decisions THE CANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER - Gloria Taylor watches from the inside as her body deteriorates. Lou Gehrig’s disease has already robbed her of the ability to walk or drive, leaving her unable to visit most of her friends and family. She uses a feeding tube. She describes her hands as nearly useless. Her voice is beginning to fade. Taylor knows her life is ending, but she says a British Columbia court ruling last week that struck down Canada’s ban on doctor-assisted suicide now gives her control over when and how that will happen. “To die screaming at the top of my lungs because the pain is so great that I can’t stand it is something I try not to think about,” Taylor, one of the plaintiffs in the landmark court case, said Monday in her first public comments about the ruling. “Now, thankfully, I don’t have to fear that kind of death, an ending to a life that’s been full of so many good things and challenges. I can do

dying, but I can’t do major suffering to get there.” Taylor, 64, who lives in West Kelowna, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS, in 2009, though her symptoms began several years before that. Last year, she joined other plaintiffs - including a woman who took her dying mother to Switzerland in 2010 so she could end her life - in a lawsuit challenging Canada’s ban on doctor-assisted suicide. A B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled Friday the law is unconstitutional and gave Parliament a year to rewrite it. Taylor was granted an immediate exemption, though she said she’s made no decisions about when, or if, she will ask a doctor to help her end her life. “I live one day at a time, and I’m not there yet. I’m still here for living, and I hope for a long time,” said Taylor. “When it’s time, it’s God’s will, not mine, and I’ll leave it at that. ... I can’t answer for somewhere I’m not.”

A flood warning was issued for the Fraser River from Quesnel to the Fraser Canyon Monday as a weekend of heavy rain brought water levels near a 50-year high. “River levels are expected to be at a flood stage downstream of Prince George through to the Fraser Canyon, starting on Tuesday or Wednesday through to Thursday or Friday,” the B.C. River Forecast Centre said in a bulletin issued Monday. River forecasters estimated

Heavy rainfall across the headwaters of the Fraser and Thompson Rivers prompted the centre to extend its earlier upper Fraser River flood warning, issued for Prince George and upstream. Rainfall along the Fraser and its tributaries totalled 30 to 75 mm in 72 hours, adding to rapid snowmelt.

Metro Vancouver rejects water subsidies for farms issue at Metro’s regional planning and agriculture committee. How water rates are charged in the region is technically up to individual cities, but a blanket decision by the region to confer lower rates for farm purposes would flow through to farmers. Delta is the only city in the region that already opts to subsidize farmers’ irrigation, offering a 38 per cent discount within its agricultural zone on the first 8,000 cubic metres of water used. Matching Delta’s discounts would cost Metro an estimated $550,000 annually. The report said potable water costs

Farmers won’t be getting any break from Metro Vancouver on the cost of water to irrigate their crops. The regional district board voted Friday to shoot down the idea of a reduced price for agricultural water consumption, at least for now. Metro directors say it’s not justifiable to provide Metro water – most of which is now filtered and treated at great cost – at a discount rate to farmers. “I think it’s a bit of a slippery slope to isolate the water issue,” Surrey Coun. Linda Hepner said at a debate on the

Quebec, Ottawa unite to denounce UN Human Rights commissioner criticizes Quebec’s Bill 78 THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The Charest Liberals and Harper Conservatives were united Monday in their condemnation of a United Nations agency for criticism of Quebec’s Bill 78. It is the second direct spat between the federal government and a branch of the UN within a month. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Monday she was disappointed by the controversial Quebec law. The law sets rules for gatherings of more than 50 people, requiring

organizers to provide eights hours’ notice of the itinerary and length of the event. Pillay expressed her opinion of the Quebec law in a single paragraph of a long speech in Geneva during which she lamented rights violations in places such as North Korea, Zimbabwe and South Sudan. “Moves to restrict freedom of assembly in many parts of the world are alarming,� she said. “In the context of student protests, I am disappointed by the new legislation passed in Quebec that restricts their rights to freedom of association and of peaceful assembly.� Quebec Premier Jean Charest said the criticism from the

Geneva-based agency was rich considering that city has much tougher protest laws. “It’s ironic, though, that they’re criticizing a law that requires eight hours’ notice before a protest and an itinerary, when in Geneva - where the United Nations office is - it’s 30 days’ notice that they require,� Charest told reporters at global environmental conference in Rio de Janeiro. “So we’re not as severe as the place that hosts the United Nations. We’re more supple, and more permissive.� The Harper government in Ottawa was quick to respond to the criticism, defending Quebec’s right to pass its own laws in a demo-

cratic environment. Industry Minister Christian Paradis, the government’s Quebec lieutenant, took Pillay to task for avoiding other, more serious human rights abuses in places such as Sri Lanka, Iran and Belarus. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said he was disappointed with Canada being mentioned in Pillay’s speech Monday. “Quebec is a very democratic place subject to the rule of law,� Baird said. “With what’s going on in Syria, with what’s going on in Iran and Belarus, the UN would be better to spend its time on there.�

OTTAWA - The growing economy hasn’t done very much to boost Canadian incomes, a new report from Statistics Canada confirms. The agency reported Monday that median, after-tax income for families of two or more amounted to $65,500 in 2010, virtually unchanged from 2009 or the year before after adjusting for inflation. The result was slightly better for twoparent families with children. That segment saw median, aftertax income grow to $78,800 from $77,200 the year before. There was no data from 2011, but weekly wages and other income reports suggest that there would likely be little improvement last year as well, analysts said. That’s still a better record than what has occurred in the United States, where incomes have actually contracted, but economist Benjamin Tal of CIBC World Markets says Canadians should take little comfort. “Something is not working here (in economy), this is not a positive report,� said Tal. Since the recession, Canada has added about 750,000 new jobs, but Tal said the median income data, and other reports, shows that those jobs have not been of high quality. population had higher incomes and half lower, hence is considered a reliable indicator of the overall trend in the country. The latest reading follows a report last week that showed average household debt in relation to disposable income had risen to a record 152 per cent at the end of 2011. Statistics Canada noted that the rise in the debt ratio was not due to Canadians borrowing more, but to stagnant incomes. The latest report finds a wide disparity on median after-tax income depending on where Canadians live. At the upper end of the scale was Alberta at $78,100, followed

by Saskatchewan, $70,100, and Ontario, $69,300. The Atlantic provinces and Quebec were at the low end, ranging from $56,300 in Newfoundland to $58,900 in New Brunswick. After-tax income is the total of earnings, private pensions, income from investments and other sources, less income tax. The median for female, lone-parent families was $38,700, while families headed by a senior had a median after-tax income of $46,800. For singles, median after-tax income was also unchanged in 2010, with non-seniors at $27,500 and seniors at $23,400.

Choosing work instead of welfare

he B.C. government has taken some modest steps to tighten up the province’s income assistance system, and to encourage people to work when they are able to. With Premier Christy Clark swooping in to take credit, Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux unveiled changes that included fixing the worst mistake in B.C. Liberal policy. Cadieux acknowledged that B.C. was the only province that clawed back all earnings from employable welfare recipients, and she announced that from now on they will be able to earn up to $200 a month without penalty. The exemption for disabled people is increased from $500 to $800 a month. Another important change is requiring welfare recipients to file income tax returns. People can now do temporary work when it comes along,

report the income and take advantage of the various tax credits that come from participating in society instead of just living off it. Any experience earning money is valuable experience. With baby boomers starting to retire in big numbers, the expected labour shortage has begun across Western Canada. And yet, increasing numbers of foreign workers are coming in to do farm and other work, while many young people are unemployed. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon took note of this during his budget preparations. Increasing numbers of young, employable people were applying for welfare in southern B.C., while jobs go begging in the booming northeast. Falcon mused about setting up a program to provide training and plane fare for these people, an idea quickly dubbed “Welfare Air.” Another effort to get

If Jobfest and Welfare Air sound a bit desperate, it’s because they are. They illustrate our society’s problem. We have a public school system where students pass whether they do the

work or not. The culture assumes self-esteem is more important than achievement. The teachers’ union constantly sets an example that the way to get what you want is to stamp your feet and demand it from government. What do we expect young people to learn? And how easy is it for B.C. to slip into a Greecelike tailspin, where a majority expects to be carried on the backs of the shrinking minority who do productive work? Old-timers might recall when Mike Harcourt’s NDP government took over from the allegedly miserly Social Credit regime and raised welfare rates. They compounded that mistake by relaxing eligibility rules and making it easier for employable people to stay on welfare. After a couple of years of this wealth redistribution, 10 per cent of the B.C. population was on welfare, with more piling

on every day. Faced with the results of this staggering blunder, Harcourt lashed out at “cheats, deadbeats and varmints” scamming B.C. taxpayers and launched a crackdown on fraud. Later the NDP cut the basic rate for single employables to $500 a month. Today it stands at $610, and the NDP looks poised to repeat history. Surrey MLA Jagrup Brar did a month-long publicity stunt in January, living on welfare by wandering from shelter to food bank with TV cameras trailing behind. Brar would have been better off if Welfare Air had been available. Instead of learning to live off the burgeoning urban handout industry, he could have gone up to Dawson Creek or Fort St. John and worked as a labourer. How governments hide information

F

rom the federal government to provincial governments, the tendency to hide information taxpayers have bought and paid for seems all too common. Regardless of the party label, few governments give up information that is potentially embarrassing without a fight. In Alberta, the most recent example came courtesy of the University of Calgary, which allegedly contravened the provincial Elections Act by donating money to the governing Progressive Conservatives. In that instance, the University’s former general counsel, Charlene Anderson, wrote in an internal MARK e-mail that she thought the practice was “illegal and is unacceptTroy able.� That revelation came in addition to earlier reports that Brian Fjeldheim, Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer, found at least 41 questionable donations from other taxpayerfunded bodies to the ruling party. Regrettably, Fjeldheim has pointed out that he cannot release specific information on those donations because provincial law forbids it. The law and its’ idiosyncrasies are the creation of the current provincial government, which at present is ruled by the party that benefitted from the 41 possible illegal donations. That is a self-enclosed loop of secret-keeping and non-accountability. Alberta’s government is not alone in the tendency to block the release of information that is less-than-flattering to the ruling party. Federal Conservatives have acted the same way on other files. In Access to Information requests I’ve filed over the years, I’ve noticed that they rarely come back quickly. One recent request for the simple 16-page cost-sharing agreement between the federal and Ontario governments on the 2009 automotive bailout took five months to obtain,

this after an additional two months of informal requests to Ottawa and Queen’s Park. The disclosure took that long even though the agreement contained nothing that could infringe upon someone’s personal privacy or would endanger national security. It is even rarer when such information requests come back complete. Most often, especially on repayment records for companies that have taken out loans from government, such information is blacked out. The responding government letters always note that sections of federal legislation prohibit disclosure of certain “confidential� financial information. Of course, Media such information is “confidential� because the government wrote the law that way, presumably because a lack of repayments by multiple companies might be looked on unfavourably by the general public or be seen as a subsidy by competitors. The law could and should be changed to provide more transparency. The federal government (under Conservatives and Liberals alike) has always been lousy at disclosing repayment records on taxpayer loans to businesses. However, after 2009, the Conservatives were happy to roll out a plethora of announcements on every dollar and dime in taxpayer-funded lolly for this or that stimulus project. Initially, on stimulus spending, the Conservative government reported to Parliament every three months but that was merely to detail the goodies disbursed. What was invariably missing was accurate accounting for money to be paid back. In this, Canadian government reporting is distinctly inferior to how the American federal government reports to its taxpayers. There, under terms agreed to by the Bush administration

and the U.S. Congress, and which continues in the Obama years, the U.S. Treasury department publicly reports monthly on the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). So, anyone with access to a web browser can see which financial institution or automotive company received tax dollars, how much and what, if anything, has been paid back. For example, in the latest TARP report from May, American taxpayers can see that under TARP, GM received $51 billion, repaid $23.2 billion, that $4.4 billion was categorized as a loss, and that the U.S. government still expects $23.4 billion to be repaid. In contrast, Canada’s federal Finance department produces no such monthly report to Parliament with such a breakdown and never has. That means taxpayers either have no idea, or have the wrong idea about how such Canadian stimulus programs, or any others, turn out. For instance, in late May 2011 Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced that Chrysler Canada had repaid its stimulus-era government loans “in full, six years ahead of schedule.� But that was incorrect, as even Flaherty was forced to acknowledge in response to a reporter’s question two days later at a press conference. Then, the Finance Minister noted Chrysler had paid back just $1.7 billion out of $2.9 billion in loans. The remaining $1.2 billion was owed from the “old,� prebankrupt Chrysler. That meant $1.2 billion would never be repaid. If taxpayers want clear, consistent and full disclosure on how Canadian government loans to Chrysler and GM played out, in a manner akin to U.S. reporting, or want information on additional corporate welfare, or on illegal donations made to a government party in Alberta, they will find Canadian governments act rather clam-like in response to demands for information that should always be publicly available. Helen lived in Princeton until she married her Squeaks and moved to Trail, B.C She attended the Princeton school until grade 11. She was a member of the Princeton Girls Bugle Band. Her hobbies are knitting, sewing, cooking, baking, painting, crocheting and needlework, she also loved to travel. She enjoys watching ice skating and a good movie. She enjoyed many years at Christina Lake. Over the years she worked at a number of jobs, such as 7-Up plant, Crystal Laundry, Hospital Laundry and as a janitor for the school district. She has traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, Disney World in Florida (twice), Nashville, Graceland, Dollywood, Tennessee. She had 2 wonderful trips to Chicago, then Florida with her husband, Squeaks. Helen is predeceased by her husband Squeaks, both her parents, Dana & Peter Popovich, brothers Bud and Peter, and sisters Toots and Mary, son-in-law, Roger Turner. She is survived by her two loving daughters and their families; Dana & Russell Roberts, Mernie & Toni, Denise Turner, Richard & Devon, one sister Anne Thomas, sister- inlaw Sadie Conrad, sister- in-law Mary Caputo, Bea Borsato, and numerous nieces and nephews. Moroney takes juniors BY TIMES STAFF It was a three-way, 36-hole race to the finish, but in the end it was RosslandTrail Country Club’s Brenan Moroney who took home top honours at the West Kootenay Zone 1 Tour Championship at Kokannee Springs and Balfour Golf Course on the weekend. Moroney and Christina Lake’s Jordan Hoodikoff were BRENAN MORONEY deadlocked after the opening round at Kokannee Springs Saturday carding rounds of 75. Tyler McKay (RTCC) was also in the mix, finishing hot on their heels, with a 77 and promising an exciting finish to the two-day, 36-hole event. At Balfour on Sunday, McKay bogied early, but came back with an eagle and a birdie, giving him a momentary lead over Moroney and Hoodikoff. The golfers battled all day with all three making few mistakes and plenty of birdies. “My short game saved me on Sunday,” said the 17-year-old Moroney, who was able to get the ball close and make putts to hold off a charging McKay and persistent Hoodikoff. In the end, the entire season came down to the 18th hole where Hoodikoff missed an eight-footer and Moroney drained his short par putt to win the title with a one-shot victory. “It feels really good,” said Moroney. “I got better as the season went on and played pretty well the last two tournaments.” While Hoodikoff won the first two stops on the junior tour, Moroney came back and won at Champion Lakes last week and the tour championship this weekend to win the Player of the Year title. McKay posted the best score Sunday with a 75 for a two-day total of 152, but Moroney’s 76 gave him the victory with a two-day sum of 151. Hoodikoff’s 77 left him tied with McKay at 152. Hoodikoff won top player in the 17-18 year division, Tyler McKay top of the 15-16 year olds, and Braden McKay for the 14 and under. Ryan Fullerton took the honors for most improved in the 15-18 year division and Dugan McInnes from Nakusp in the 14-and-under division. Ryan Page (RTCC) played some of his best golf of the season and posted back-to-back rounds of 84 to take low net honors. Golf notes: MacKenzie Field from Christina Lake accepted a scholarship to play golf next year at Simon Fraser University and Jordan Hoodikoff will be playing at a College in Scottsdale Arizona.

Rain doesn’t dampen Jays momentum BY JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor

While it did rain on the Trail Jays parade Sunday as they got set to host North Idaho American Legion rival Cranbrook Bandits, it wasn’t a complete washout, as the Jays went on to beat the Bandits 10-0 in a one game, rain-shortened double header. Just prior to throwing out the first pitch for the 1 p.m. match, the skies unleashed a heavy torrent that thoroughly soaked the Butler Park field causing a delay. About 40 coaches, players, parents, and spectators from both teams pitched in to bucket out the puddles, rake and dry the sand, and get the field in playable shape. “I think every person had a bottle or a can and was scooping out water,” assistant coach Chris Combo said. “We’re really thankful for all the players and parents helping out.” However, another brief but even heavier downpour delayed things further, forcing officials to cancel the first game. “It was just a mess this morning,” said Jays coach Nick Combo. “So I was happy to get in one (game).” After removing and drying out the dirt

in the sun, the second game got underway around 3 p.m., and it didn’t take long for the Jays’ bats to come to life. Scott Davidson led off with a single, and stole second base. A pair of walks to Dallas Calvin and Tyrus Jocko loaded the bases, and Davidson would score on a fielder’s choice to make it 1-0 and what would turn out to be the winning run. The Bandits went in order in the top of the second, and the Jays replied with a six run deluge in the bottom half. Jordan Roblin got things rolling when he walked and stole a base. Jake Lucchini stepped up and stroked a single, scoring Roblin to make it 2-0. Lucchini also swiped second and would score on a Geoff Soukeroff double. The Jays followed that up with four consecutive singles from Calvin, Jocko, Tanner Rotschy, and Lukas Thatcher to take a commanding 7-0 lead. “I’m happy with the way we played,” said Nick Combo. “We hit the ball pretty well which I was glad to see, I mean the other team didn’t make too many errors.” Jarret Conway got the start on the mound for the Jays and sat the Bandits down in order until the fourth when an

error allowed Cranbrook’s first runner. Conway struck out three, walked none, and gave up only one hit in five innings of work. Jake Lucchini went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Jays. “Conway threw really well, he kept them off balance and they couldn’t do much against him. They’re a young team so it was good to send a message early to them.” The Jays added three more runs in the fifth inning to end the game due to the 10-run mercy rule. Despite two errors in the game, the team played well defensively, and the speed on the base paths nabbed them four stolen bases in the first two innings alone and five altogether. “They are starting to buy in to what’s going on and getting more confident as the games go on,” said Combo. The Jays enjoy a modest winning streak taking two in a row in NIAL action with an 8-5 win over the Prairie Cardinals on Wednesday and the win over the Bandits Sunday. The Jays hit the road and will play in the Bellingham Tournament in Bellingham Wash. this weekend.

Surprised Simpson seizes victory THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Open yields few birdies or big celebrations. At Olympic Club, they always come in strange places. Webb Simpson walked off the 18th green on a fog-filled Sunday evening with his face red and his legs limp, settling into a corner of the locker room to recover with his worried wife and watch Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell chase his 1-over par 281 on the course. After a week that restored the toughest test in golf, this was not the look or score of a mediocre man. This was the 112th U.S. Open champion. Simpson saved par from the collar around the 18th green and sweated out a pair of past champions three groups behind, becoming the latest to claim his first major title at a club that always crowns the guy nobody expects to win. “To be honest,” Simpson said, “I never thought about, and I never really wrapped my mind

around winning.” With the history here, he should have known better. Olympic Club is called the “graveyard of champions” for a reason. Proven major winners who were poised to win the U.S. Open - Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Payne Stewart - all lost out to the underdog. And all in a painful finish. Perhaps it was only fitting that the 26-year-old Simpson went to Wake Forest on a Palmer scholarship. “Arnold has been so good to me,” Simpson said. “Just the other day, I read that story and thought about it. He’s meant so much to me and Wake Forest. Hopefully, I can get a little back for him and make him smile.” Simpson did his part in the latest familiar chapter at a club that dates to 1860. The North Carolina native emerged from the famous fog that blanketed the undulating Lake Course to make four birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn on the final day, and

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN DIEGO - LaDainian Tomlinson has signed a one-day contract with the San Diego Chargers and announced his retirement after a brilliant 11-year NFL career. Tomlinson, about to turn 33, says it’s time to move on and enjoy his family. He says he’s still physically capable of playing but that the game takes a mental toll. Tomlinson was drafted in the first round by San Diego in 2001 and became one of the biggest stars in team history. He was with the Chargers for nine seasons before playing the last two seasons with the New York Jets. Tomlinson was voted NFL MVP in 2006, when he set league single-season records with 31 touchdowns, including 28 rushing, and 186 points. Tomlinson finishes his career with 13,684 yards, fifth all-time, and 145 touchdowns.

Seek ‘family’ outside of horrible in-laws Dear Annie: I married at the age of 18. Shortly before my wedding, both of my parents died, leaving me with no other relatives. I looked forward to sharing life with my husband’s large, closeknit family. But the day after the ceremony, my new mother-inlaw began a crusade to divorce me. She went to each family member with horrible lies about me, and they believed her. I never got the chance to know them. The worst lie was telling my husband that I was unfaithful. The whole family condemned me without a shred of evidence. Fortunately, my husband knew better. My mother-in-law banned me from all family functions and forbade everyone from having contact with me. She insisted that we move far away to a rural area, isolated from everyone. Before every holiday and family event for the past 25 years, I have cried

watching my husband drive off for a day of fun and memories with his family, leaving me all alone. He says that he cannot disobey his mother, especially now that she is terminally ill. After she dies, I am hoping that things will change and that I finally will be allowed to join the clan, but I’m unsure how to do this. My husband feels things should continue as they are. He seems to relish the role of martyr at the hands of a horrible wife. It is difficult to discuss this with him, as he has an uncontrollable temper and sometimes resorts to physical violence. Should I simply

accept that I never will be able to call anyone family? Sadly, divorce is out of the question for many reasons. -- Alone in Minnesota Dear Alone: Your husband is a coward, as well as an abuser. After 25 years, we wouldn’t count on his family being more accepting, particularly if your husband discourages it. Instead, please consider “family” those people who care about you. If you have children, they, their spouses and their in-laws are your family. If you don’t have children, your friends can become the family you need. Since divorce is not an option, we recommend counseling on your own to help you cope better with the hand you’ve been dealt. Dear Annie: My wife and I own a place in a resort community where golfing greens fees at a public course are included in our annual charges. We are not sure how to handle it when guests

visit and want to play golf with us. It feels awkward when they pay the full amount while we appear to be getting in for free. Should we subsidize our friends even though we’ve already paid our fees as part of our yearly dues? -- Paul Dear Paul: You should treat this as you would if taking your friends to a museum, concert or out for dinner. If you’ve invited them to golf with you, you should pay the greens fees. However, if they invite themselves, they should handle their own costs. What you and your wife pay is irrelevant, although you could explain the circumstances if it would make you feel better. Dear Annie: “Indianapolis” said her brother is in hospice and the wife has disconnected his phone and won’t let anyone visit. Please tell her that even with power of attorney, the sister-in-law and the hospice care facility cannot interfere with

his visitors without evidence that such visits are not desired by the brother or are prohibited by a court-ordered restraining order based on the visitor being a danger. I would suggest that “Indianapolis”

TAKE NOTICE a Public Hearing will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012 commencing at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers in City Hall, 1394 Pine Avenue, Trail, BC with respect to Zoning Bylaw Amendment Bylaw No. 2733, 2012.
