Community going to lose out: Eric Wickham AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After the resignation of Eric Wickham, Multi-Centre committee members are focusing on “moving forward.” “It’s such an important project and we’re really excited to see it to completion,” North Cariboo Multi-Centre Committee fundraising chair, Bernice Heinzelman said. Wickham agrees, but says if things continue as they have, it’s not going to happen.

“Facts are facts,” he said. “And nothing is getting done.” Wickham resigned last week, quoting a lack of respect and support from senior levels, such as the mayor and the Quesnel Community Economic Development Corporation. “Over the past year of these requests, QCEDC has promised over and over again their assistance with this matter but no assistance, guidance or any support whatsoever has come forward,” his

resignation letter reads. “As chair of the committee I attempted on several occasions to ask the mayor for her help regarding this matter but did not even receive a reply to my phone messages and e-mails.” Committee member and Cariboo Regional District Director area C, John Massier said he was surprised by Wickham’s resignation and backed QCEDC. “I speak in support of QCEDC and their efforts to see construction of the Multi-Centre move

forward,” he said. “This volunteer board of well-respected local business people are actively working on the corporate community fundraising initiative and their staff have extensive time invested in support of the project.” But Wickham says it’s not about the dedication of volunteers, it’s about elected officials and paid staff and their lack of knowledge, dedication, vision and respect. “You have people showing up to meetings saying they’re going to

The fundraising committee, struck just over a year ago, has a combined local and corporate funding goal of $6.7 million. “So far we have maybe $10,000,” Wickham said. “And we have until January – that is horrendous.” But for Wickham it’s not just about finances, it’s about the lack of respect. “Meetings are unbelievably

disrespectful,” he said. “You have members of council texting the entire time, snide remarks...” Heinzelman maintains the committee is following the “plan” and is looking forward to a number of fundraising events such as golf-ball drop, planned for September. “I hope like hell we get it,” Wickham said. “But this kind of behaviour is totally disrespectful to volunteers and citizens of this community – and it’s the community that’s going to lose out.”

Fix Auto looking for deserving recipient of a vehicle DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter The team at Fix Auto is gearing up to give away a car. Brent Graham said he and his wife have been involved with this sort of help for the less fortunate. “My wife and I have been involved in mini home makeovers in Williams Lake for single moms,” he explained. “Now we thought giving away a vehicle would be something nice to do once a year to help someone who can maybe not afford to upgrade their own vehicle or their own vehicle doesn’t run.” The car in question, a red 2009 Chevy Aveo with a manual transmission, was originally going to join Fix Auto’s courtesy car fleet. “We were told it had an automatic transmission but it’s manual,” Graham said. “We were

brainstorming what to do with it, whether to send it back or maybe use it for a vehicle giveaway.” In the end, it was decided the car would be used as a giveaway during Billy Barker Days. As far as the criteria goes, it’s still pretty open, but there must be an apparent need for a vehicle. “We’re not sure if it’s going to be a family that’s run across hard times or a single mom,” Graham explained. “Members in the community will nominate people they see with this need.” Graham has also thought of a possible partnerships with other organizations and businesses. “We’ve thought of contacting the Amata Transition House in regards to nominations, they might know some good candidates,” he said. Your Health Naturally Choosing a good, safe, efﬁcient sunscreen Our weather patterns are changing more and more frequently. Here in the Cariboo we are seeing more rain and less sun in the last two years so when the sun does shine we tend to go a little over board. Allowing unprotected skin to be exposed to UVA and UVB rays for a limited amount of time is good for Vitamin D production but what about those times when you want to be out in the sun longer without getting burned. Most experts agree that we should use a sunscreen to protect us from being over exposed to the sun but there is a huge disagreement on how well they actually work. The studies on sunscreens are not enough to prove whether it helps protect against non-melanoma skin cancer and anti-aging or if it is decreased by staying out of the sun and or by using protective clothing. The other issue with chemical sunscreens is the SPF. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor which can range from 2 to 60 and the value refers to the amount of time longer that you are able to spend in the sun before you burn. The concentration of chemicals is higher based on the number or value of the sunscreen. Having said that sunscreen users who have a false sense of security stay out in the sun longer and are exposed to more sun radiation overall. Scientists also speculate that free radicals are produced in the skin when sunscreen chemicals break down in the sunlight and, may themselves promote cell damage and contribute to skin damage and cancer. What to put on your skin and what value will depend on the type of sun exposure and the length of time your skin will be exposed. Applying sunscreen more frequently if you are swimming or perspiring more than usual is always a safe bet. Always reading the label for ingredients is very important because you are applying it directly to the skin. Ingredients to avoid are all man made chemical preservatives, petroleum, synthetic fragrances, dyes or phthalates. Most sunscreen manufacturers recommend washing the sunscreen off at the end of the day to return the skin back to its normal balance over night. Zinc oxide is a natural mineral usually called “Zincite” that has been used for generations and literally reﬂects the sun back. Unlike chemical sunscreen ingredients, zinc oxide cannot be absorbed into the skin and is not metabolized by the body. Other plant extracts such as hemp oil, coconut oil, aloe vera, Shea butter, carrot seed oil and edelweiss are good ingredients in sun blocks to look for as they do not interfere with Vitamin D and also provide some cellular repair, Naturally!

OPINIONS Debate needed While the lumping together of numerous pieces of federal legislation in one giant omnibus bill may not be precedent-setting, there is fear that doing so threatens to reduce democracy to mere window dressing. Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, still relatively young in its first majority, reduced the level of debate on specific issues relating to everything from environmental protection to military spending to multiculturalism. No aspect of governmental operations was being spared. The concern is that sections of the bill pinpointed by hard-working MPs as troublesome – remember, the bill affects every ministry – could not possibly be given the time needed to discuss potential problems with implementation before regulations and budgets get put in place. It’s not just opposing MPs who were left scrambling by this tactic. Even Conservative MPs were forced to bone up on all aspects of the government’s budget legislation. Who’s got time for that? And how could we expect any of our elected representatives to be well-versed on even half of the legislation tabled? Meanwhile, Opposition and other MPs tabled 800 possible amendments to the bill, which no doubt caused further confusion and anxiety among this country’s lawmakers as the bill went through the debate process. The feds argued time is of the essence as they work to keep the economy from spiralling down as a growing number of European countries are experiencing. Still, that is not reason enough to subvert the democratic process and eliminate the kind of proper debate that Canadians have come to expect. To use a well-used phrase, this can only end badly, both for the continuity of services, checks and balances in this country and the preservation of the type of democracy we all voted for. –Black Press

If Jobfest and welfare air sound a bit desperate, it’s because they are. They illustrate our society’s problem. We have a public school system where students pass whether they do the work or not. The culture assumes selfesteem is more important than achievement. The teachers’ union constantly sets an example that the way to get what you want is to stamp your feet and demand it from government. What do we expect young people to learn? And how easy is it for B.C. to slip into a Greecelike tailspin, where a majority expects to be carried on the backs of the shrinking minority who do productive work? Oldtimers might recall when Mike Harcourt’s NDP government took over from the allegedly miserly Social Credit regime and raised welfare rates. They compounded that mistake by relaxing

Cutting program is short-sighted Editor: Open letter to the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Re: Elimination of the National Archival Development Program. I am writing on behalf of the Quesnel Museum and Heritage Commission. We are an advisory committee for the City of Quesnel responsible for oversight of the Quesnel and District Museum and Archives and heritage matters. We were alarmed to hear of the sudden elimination of the National Archival Development Program on April 30. As concerned citizens who volunteer our time to support the operation of a community archives, we believe that the discontinuation of

the program is short sighted and will have a negative impact that far outweighs the savings of $1.7 million in Federal spending. The funding provided to the provincial archives associations is crucial to the professional operation of community museums and archives across the country. In B.C., the preservation service provides cost effective conservation advice to many institutions, which otherwise could not access a professional conservator. This provides preservation treatment to individual items, but more importantly, assists these institutions to create an environment which helps preserve entire collections. The provincial associations provide

training to staff and volunteers at these smaller institutions. Often people working in these community repositories have not had prior archives or library training but they are intelligent and motivated. For minimal expense they gain valuable knowledge which ensures that collections are arranged and described following a standard format. As a result, the holdings from institutions of different sizes and organizational structures can be uploaded to a networked database and are accessible to the public online. Our institution has not, to date, directly accessed funds from the NADP. We have undertaken a number of video history projects to record the

memories and knowledge of elders from diverse cultural groups in our community. We have digitized the local paper, making more than 100 years of community history accessible online. We have collected, arranged and described approximately 60 fonds and over 13,000 photographs. These are made accessible to the public through the British Columbia Archival Union List. We could not have established our archival program or have been in a position to undertake such projects without the training and support provided by the Archives Association of British Columbia. Canada’s heritage is preserved in institutions

large and small in communities across the country. We currently display the photographs of C.D. Hoy, a photographer who took remarkable portraits of the First Nations, Chinese and European residents of Quesnel in the early years of the 20th century. This award–winning exhibition has traveled the country providing visitors with an opportunity to understand the deep roots of multiculturalism in Canada. Hoy’s photographs are now being used to build cultural and economic bridges with China through an exhibit being developed by the Barkerville Heritage Trust. At the Quesnel Museum we have created a travelling exhibit of the work of his contemporary, C.S. Wing, whose glass

negatives are preserved in our archives. This show, which delivers a similar message, is now travelling in western Canada. In anniversary years, museums and archives are called upon to organize special events and create exhibits to educate and to bring the country together in celebration. The National Archival Development Program through the network of Archival Associations is vital to preserving and making accessible the primary materials of Canadian History, 365 days a year. Invasive weed eradication is everyone’s ﬁght ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

hen the public unknowingly cultivates a noxious weed, all sorts of havoc ensues, often causing devastating damage to the environment. CRD crews are in Quesnel right now, scouring the roadsides, hillsides, creek and river beds looking for, among others, two very serious invasive weeds. Himalayan Balsam (impatiens glandulifera) is particularly destructive to hillsides and water courses because it not only chokes out native vegetation, which have root structures which stabilize the soil but Himalayan Balsam has no root system to replace the beneficial plants they have destroyed. “We know this plant exists on both sides of the Fraser River in town and to an unknown level outside of town,” CRD Invasive Plant spray assistant and arborist Rob Tregillus said. “We also know there are a number of hillsides and many yards with this invasive plant. “There are acres of Himalayan Balsam in the Quesnel area.” With small sites, pulling the plants, bagging them and depositing the bags in the invasive plant bins at the Quesnel landfill would go a long way to preventing the spread, but Tregillus said many residents aren’t aware of the damage Himalayan Balsam (also known as Policeman’s Helmet, Sibirian Orchid and other common names) can do. In fact, he said according to a member of the Quesnel gardening society, this plant was at one time cultivated and shared. Japanese Knotweed (polygonum cuspidatum) is also on the hit list for CRD crews. Similar in appearance to bamboo, this

plant is listed by the World Conservation Union as one of the world’s 100 worst invasive species. In addition to choking out native species, Japanese Knotweed is known to penetrate thick asphalt and bust up concrete. “I know of six locations, varying in size, around Quesnel,” Tregillus said. Both plants propagate through seeds, but knotweed also spreads through a runner (rhizomes) system. The CRD program is part of a worldwide effort to control invasive weeds. The Invasive Weed Council has a global strategy administered through agencies such as the CRD and local programs are tailored to the specific infestations in various regions. With only one urban crew and one roadside crew, Tregillus said local residents are an important part of the eradication process. Before doing anything though, he suggested residents consult with CRD to ensure the plants are the invasive variety and also to help identify spread and location. Himalayan Balsam can be safely and effectively pulled on small sites (ideally before it flowers), bagged and placed in the invasive weed bin at the landfill. For Japanese Knotweed, it’s important to contact CRD as to the best way to deal with the infestation. However, there’s another way the public can help with this problem. One of the easiest ways to spread this nasty plant is through dumping unwanted vegetative debris over embankments and around riparian areas. Not only do grass clippings, branches and the like kill trees but they also create the perfect nursery for these killer invasive plants. “Anytime you are inappropriately

disposing of unwanted grass clippings, tree branches and garden waste, you are potentially giving invasive weeds another deadly shot at a native species,” Tregillus said. “Also, with the prospect of charging for dumping debris of all sorts at the landfill, residents may choose to dump their debris over embankments and contribute to the problem.” Tregillus says part of the solution is recruiting residents in the invasive plants war. “An informed public is the front line force in the war against invasive weeds but that also means if the public isn’t helping with the solution, they’re adding to the problem,” he said. “Damage to the environment and dealing with these plants is costing hundreds of billions of dollars both locally and internationally through loss of productivity, damage to infrastructures, destruction of native flora and fauna and the cost of dealing with these plants, all of which impacts humans.” Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed are just two of hundreds of

invasive plants listed in the sixth edition of Field Guide to Noxious Weeds and other selected invasive plants in B.C., with more being added all the time, Tregilllus said. “CRD is currently treating, in one way or another, 31 species of invasive weeds in the Cariboo Chilcotin with Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed at the top of the hit list.” He couldn’t stress enough how important it is for residents to understand the enormity of the problem and their role in the solution. Robert (Bob) Duane Monroe Feb. 2, 1924 - June 13, 2012 ob passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at B the age of 88 years, in Kamloops, B.C. He is survived by his loving wife Bernice of 64 years; children Linda Monroe (Bob McCormick) of Ashcroft, BC, Keith (Merla) Monroe of 150 Mile, BC; grandchildren Melanie Lees (Brock Nicklas), Douglas Lees (Shawna Gagne), Kira (Clayton) Kursteiner, Drew Monroe (Samantha Lloyd), and great grandchildren, Paige, Braden, Caitlin, Coen and Kaidance. Bob was born on February 2, 1924 in Omak, Washington. His family moved to Strathnaver B.C. in 1930. He entered the Air Force (R.C.A.F.), in 1943, serving overseas until 1946. Bob and Bernice were married on May 26, 1948, and started married life on their own farm in Strathnaver. Bob had a long career with the engineering division of the BC Forest Service, which involved

frequent moves to various locations around the province. After retiring in 1980, Bob and Bernice lived in Hixon, B.C. Bob returned to farming in Strathnaver and kept busy with mechanical work in his shop. Following a few years of actual retirement in Chilliwack, Bob and Bernice settled in Kamloops. “Poppa’s big chair sits empty except for the memories and love.” A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 21, 2012 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive. MonthsCrossﬁ of researching rewarded ﬁnd their key to victory JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Offering everything from frayed tempers to tricklein goals and triumph held to the final seconds, Thursday night's Crossfire game was worth the monthslong build up. Coming off their first win over the Stylers, one of the best teams in the league, the Crossfire had something to prove to the Quesnel crowd on Thursday, which they did, logging their second win of

the season with a 10-9 win over the Devils. Pat Gibbs, one of the founding players of the team, was happy to finally see the fruits of the team's labour. "It feels good. It feels damn good," he said. "It's been coming together for a while and now we're finally getting results." The Crossfire took control of the scoreboard early. They were in good shape, controlling the ball and keeping the pressure

on the Devils for the first period, allowing only one goal, and netting five before the pressure boiled over. With less than two minutes left in the first, a couple of rough checks and some choice words had almost all the players on the floor paired off. Eight of the players, four from each team, ended up rolling on the floor, or swinging wildly at their opponents heads. Once the players were calmed down (no easy feat

for the two refs) an early intermission was called to sort and hand out penalties. After the ten minute intermission, penalties were handed out, with six game misconducts, along with several other lesser penalties, for the Crossfire. The Devils got off a bit easier with single game misconduct handed to one of the fighters and various other penalties. The Crossfire nearly killed the half-period power play the handed to the Devils after the brawl.

Goaltender Ryley Cooper made some quick saves during the penalty kill to keep the Crossfire on top. One minute before the last penalty came off, the Devils scor, to put the game at 5-2. It was in the later half of the second the Devils started to make their presence felt. After the ten-minute mark of the second, the Devils started to claw their way out of the hole they had dug for themselves. The last ten minutes became a more

even game, with plenty of scoring chances, more of which the Devils capitalized on. At the end of the second the Devils were on their way back to seriously challenge the Crossfire, down only three points with the score sitting at 7-4 for the Crossfire. Down to the wire from PAGE A19 dash, catching up with the Crossfire. The game was teetering on the edge, victory was only a point away for each. Both teams fought hard to put the ball past the tenders, but it was a chintzy goal that broke the tie and pushed the Crossfire into the lead. The Crossfire had made their play, and were headed back to their own end, except for one of the players who had been slow to get up after a Devil's knee fuond his back. All eyes were on that action as the ball bounced its way past the goaltender's foot, spurred on by one of his own. Back ahead now, the Crossfire succesfully pushed forward to get a cushion goal. However that pillow was taken away three minutes later. With two minutes left in the game their lead was removed. The last two minutes ticked down as both teams fought hard for a win. The hometown crowd perched on their seats, eagerly watching every movement of the ball. With less than a minute left, the Crossfire called a time-out. After the rest, the seconds ticked down. 40. 30. 20. And 19.1 seconds before the end of the game Cameron Braun put the ball in the net to cement the Crossfire's second win. This win leaves them tied for last with the Mackenzie Lumberjax. However, the playoffs are still in sight. With some hard work, and a couple of victories over the Lumberjax in their double header this weekend, the Crossfire can slip into a playoff run. The Crossfire play their final three games of the regular season this week. All three of their last games will be played at the Twin Arenas. Thursday they play the Stylers at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday they play a double header against the Lumberjax. The Saturday game starts at 8 p.m. while the Sunday game starts at 11 a.m.

oshimi Matsuzaki is happy to talk about her sport at length, discussing the finer points of kendo and expounding on the mental conditioning it requires. Kendo (Japanese fencing) is not a popular sport in these parts, but there has been interest in it since Matsuzaki posted pictures of her gear on the Shiraoi House facebook page. Last Friday Matsuzaki gave a small presentation for a member of the Shiraoi Twinning Society. “I’ve been interested in it for a long time. Actually, I saw it on a TV show,” Mikey McDonald, a Shiroai Twinning Society member, said. So, when she saw the pictures on facebook, she decided to see if she could get a quick lesson from Matsuzaki to see if she would like it. Matsuzaki was happy to share. “I’m so happy she is interested in kendo,” she said. Matsuzaki has been giving presentations like this for the last month, ever since she got her shinai (bamboo practice sword) shipped over from Ontario. To prepare, she ducks into a room to get properly dressed.

When Matsuzaki comes out wearing the kendo gear, she looks as if she’s come straight out of the Edo era; the look hasn’t changed much since samurai roamed the earth. Each piece of equipment she has on has a name which she explains to McDonald. The kendogi and hakama are worn under the bogu (armour). The kendogi is the kimono-looking shirt; the hakama are the baggy trousers. The bogu consist of men, the helmet, doh, the chest protector, koté, the gloves and the skirts, or taré. The shinai rounds out the equipment. Once properly protected, the duel can begin, almost. Kendo is a sport of discipline and as such, one can not simply step into the ring and swing the shinai until it makes contact. First, the players must bow to each other. This is not a formality that can be done away with, it is intrinsic to the very heart of kendo. “It is especially important to start and end your bout with a bow,” Matsuzaki said. “We say ‘Rei ni hajimaru, rei ni owaru. It means ‘start with a bow and end with a bow.’ But the word for bow can also mean respect. So, it really means ‘start with a bow to show respect for your opponent and end with a bow

to show respect for your opponent.” The focus on respect is just one part of this sport which Matsuzaki says is mostly mental. “My opponent is basically myself.” The goal is focus and discipline, so whacking away will not get a player points. To do that there are four areas that one can strike to get points: doh, or the body; men, or the head; koté, or the wrist; and finally, but only for experts, tsuki, or the throat. Because tsuki, a thrust at a small guard on the throat, is dangerous, it is not taught to children. In fact, Yoshimi wasn’t even taught it until she got onto the team at her university. To get a point, one must hit one of these areas. However, a sloppy hit won’t do. The player must still be focused and ready to strike again. A kendo match is played until one player gets two points, at which time that player is the winner, and the players once again bow. For Matsuzaki, kendo has been a life long passion. “I’ve been doing it for 18 years, since I was a child because my Dad also did kendo. He taught me kendo,” Matsuzaki said. And though it’s a family affair, her mom has never been a fan of the sport. And

However, after an intense experience with her university team, during which she practiced six days a week, Yoshimi was ready to give it up after she graduated. For two years she didn’t pick up her shinai. But then, she began to miss it and so she began again. It was, to an extent, kendo that brought Matsuzaki to Shiraoi House and therefore Quesnel. “Tomoko-san said it would be good to show kendo, so that is one of my reasons for coming here,” Matsuzaki said. Despite the interest, she has no one to spar with here, but is looking forward to taking up her training once she returns to Japan.
