BOOK LAUNCH —

More than 60 people gathered at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce on June 14 to celebrate the publication of former resident Deryn Collier's Confined Space, a crime fiction novel set in the fictional town of Kootenay Landing. Columbia Brewery safety manager Tanya Ducharme (right) presented Collier with a special memento — her own personalized “lockout” set, an acknowledgment of the safety issue that plays a large role in a murder in Confined Space’s Bugaboo Brewery. Confined Space is published by Simon and Schuster Canada, and Collier, a Nelson resident since last summer, is now touring and promoting her first novel.

The province of B.C. and Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly operate the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA) for the next 30 years. “The B.C. government is committed to protecting this important ecosystem, and it welcomes Ducks Unlimited Canada’s involvement to help restore and manage the site over the next three decades,” said Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, in the June 12 announcement. “This agreement will greatly assist the operation of the Creston Valley WMA and further enhance its international reputation.” Under the agreement, DUC will inject $850,000 in 2012 to improve wetland habitats and upgrade the site’s water management. The work will include a detailed restoration plan, increased community engagement, a long-term strategic plan, and an evaluation of public education and outreach programs. “It’s exciting to see a partner like Ducks Unlimited come in,” Regional District of Central Kootenay Area A director Larry Binks said last Wednesday. “DUC has the ability to spend dollars and the wisdom, knowledge and experience to do so wisely.” He said the immediate priority is the CVWMA “plumbing” — gates, dikes, pumps and infrastructure that will keep the wetland in good operating condition — and to get local representation onto the current governing board. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the Creston Valley as a whole,” he said. “It will help attract tourism and make the area more user friendly by changing the way we do business.” See CVWMA, page 3

The money was raised through Overwaitea’s charitable points donation program, through which every 1,000 More Rewards points donated by a customer is converted to $1, which the Overwaitea Food Group matches. “These funds will be added to an endowment fund within the foundation, and every year the income that it earns will return to the community in the form of grants to local charity and non-profit groups,” said Hutchinson. “This year, the Foundation’s grants will amount to almost $25,000. he British are coming! The British are coming! No, it's not a recreation of Paul Revere's famous the-AmericanRevolution-is-starting ride of 1775. Rather, it's a tour throughout southern British Columbia of a British car club — and they will be stopping briefly at the Creston Museum on June 27. So far, 28 cars are registered to take part — Morgans, Bentleys, Austins, MGs and more. Some are definite classics, and some are considerably more modern, but either way, they're not the sort of vehicles you see driving around Creston on any day of the week. So come on down and check them out! They'll be arriving at about noon, and staying for about an hour and a half. Arrival

lad Tidings Pentecostal Church invites children 5-11 for a summer event called “Babylon: Daniel’s Courage in Captivity”, which will be hosted at Glad Tidings from Aug. 7-10. Kids will step back in time to Babylon, exploring Daniel’s adventures as a captive in a foreign land. Kids and adults participate in a memorable Bibletimes marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bibletimes snacks, visit Daniel and collect Bible memory makers to remind them of God’s word. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God sightings. Each day concludes with “celebration”, a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved. Babylon will run from 9 a.m.-noon each day. For more information and to register your children, call 250-428-7418 or email vbsbabylon@hotmail. ca and leave your contact information. This mini day camp is free of charge and organizers trust that it will be an encouraging time for children.

New venue for Friends of Cinema Council news BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

After many successful years at the Tivoli Theatre, Friends of the Cinema is moving to Prince Charles Theatre for the 2012-2013 season. “It’s basically a matter of cost,” organizer Jean Mutch said last week. “We put all of our profits back into the community and the more we make the greater the profits are. We have done a test of the picture quality at Prince Charles Theatre and we were pleased. And this summer the theatre will be getting new speakers, so sound quality should be excellent.” At total of $16,000 has been donated back to the community over an eightyear period, Mutch said. Of that, $14,000 went to Friends of the Library (which handles administration of the film presentations, and the banking) and the other $2,000 went to the Creston

CVWMA

From page 1 Inviting local bids on contract work will be a priority, Binks added. “I’m going to make sure that the work goes out to bids so contractors in the Creston Valley get a chance,” he said. Carla Ahern,
CVWMA director of communications, stewardship and education, said on Monday that “it is positive to see the four years of hard work that (CEO) Richard Dalon put into the mandate review of the CVWMA finally come to some conclusion. “The point of the mandate review was to determine a better financial and governance structure for the future of the CVWMA. We hope that the newly announced partnership between DUC and the province will provide some financial stability. “For now, it is business as usual. The structure of how the CVWMA is governed cannot be changed until the Creston Valley Wildlife Act is rescinded. That means it has to go through the B.C. legislature and we are not sure how long that will take. It could be two to three years in the making.” She said CVWMA staff are looking forward to working with DUC and the province and see this as a positive partnership. “DUC will start infrastructure upgrades to the tune of $850,000 this coming fall. That is a huge investment and a much needed one to replace

Community Auditorium Society. Money for the Friends of the Library has helped purchase a photocopier and is now going to help acquire a new library computer operating system. “Two of us from Friends of the Cinema worked on the original auditorium committee when the new school was being built,” Mutch said. “We want to keep the facility functioning well and by moving our movie screenings to Prince Charles Theatre, we can help do that.” To help movie fans get used to the new venue, Friends of the Cinema is presenting a free promotional night at 7 p.m. on June 25, when Starbuck will be shown. Starbuck centres of the life of 42-yearold David, an irresponsible slacker who is coasting through life as a deliveryman for his family’s butcher business. Then his life gets complicated. He owes $80,000 to a crime syndicate,

he has no luck growing marijuana to play the debt and his girlfriend gets pregnant. Did we mention she’s a police officer? Add to that the news that a fertility clinic has made front-page news when it is revealed that, as the result of an error, David’s sperm, donated 20 years ago) has resulted in 533 of his biological offspring, 142 of which have filed a class action lawsuit against “Starbuck”, David’s pseudonym. Soon to be the father of his own child, whose mother wants him to have nothing to do with, David undertakes to play guardian angel to other children he helped create, without revealing his identity. Season passes for the 2012-2013 Friends of the Cinema movies will be available at the Creston Valley Fall Fair in September, with prices unchanged from recent years. Supporters will be polled for their opinions about intermissions and concession services.

some of the aging water control infrastructure.” Ahern said CVWMA employees have been hoping for financial and governance stability, but they were unaware of impending changes until the announcement was made last week. “We were as surprised as anybody,” she said. Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall echoed Ahern’s statement. Mungall said she has been scrambling to talk to Ducks Unlimited and provincial and local government officials after being caught by surprise last week. “What is most important right now is to understand that this is not a ‘30-year agreement,’ ” she said from Vancouver on Monday. “It is a legally non-binding memorandum of understanding. “This government has a history of not following through with memorandums of understanding signed before elections, and no one knows which party will form the next government, so the announcement does not provide any certainty.” Because the provincial government has kept her out of the loop, Mungall said, her party has not yet had discussions about how it would treat the CVWMA and the memorandum of understanding if it forms the government next spring. “I’ve always wanted what is in the best interests of the CVWMA as a resident of the Kootenays,” she said. “We need the public to have the opportunity to be more involved and give their

input. There needs to be a collective process to make long term goals and objectives of this jewel.” Mungall said she has no objection to the involvement of Ducks Unlimited, which she described as a great organization. “Ducks Unlimited Canada is looking forward to working with the ministry and CVWMA staff to restore and improve the site’s outstanding wetland habitats,” said Brad Arner, manager of provincial operators for DUC in B.C. last week. “This area is home to hundreds of fascinating animal and plant species that will benefit from this partnership for many years to come.” Restrictions to vehicle access and user charges for fishing have put the CVWMA into a swarm of local controversy in recent months. Among the many area residents who have protested the lack of a local voice on CVWMA’s governing board, Gord and Barb Ogilvie have been some of the most vocal in expressing their concerns. “We’re doing the happy dance,” Barb said last week. “I think we are turning the leaf to its good side and it will be great to have a local representative on the board.” CVWMA manager Richard Dalon, who has been at the centre of the controversy, will not remain in his position. He refused comment when contacted in Vancouver. Currently, the CVWMA functions as a provincial crown agency and operates as a non-profit organization with federal charitable status.

From page 1 Minichiello led council through the statements and commented that in several areas the town’s financial position had improved. He also complimented senior staff on its implementation of a capital asset management system. “This is a terrific system that will lead to cost savings for many years to come,” he said.

Council Briefs •Council voted to decline a request from an out-of-town resident to allow bow hunting on town property, specifically at the airport. •$766,000 was allocated from the sewer reserve fund to proceed with construction of a portable sludge processing system as part of the upgrades planned for the waste water treatment plant. •Council supported a request by the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce to the Regional District of Central Kootenay for $25,000 from the Community Development Program to help operate the Visitor Centre. •An invitation to attend the Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of BC in Richmond in October was received for information. •A request for funding of projects by the Blossom Valley Singers was received for information after the letter failed to receive support. •The use of the Millennium Park parking lot for an automotive swap meet on Sept. 22 was approved. •Creston Fire Rescue Chief Bruce Mabin presented a report on the first quarter activities of the fire department. No fire losses were recorded from January through March, Mabin said. •A request to name a street or road “Hollowink” in recognition of the family’s contributions in the Creston Valley was received for information. The letter of request said that Evans Road in West Creston was once named Hollowink Road. •After considerable discussion about how to handle requests for money from a discretionary fund, a $250 contribution to the Creston Valley Hospice Society was approved. Coun. Judy Gadicke said there should be guidelines about how to consider such requests while Coun. Wesly Graham said the discretionary fund should allow council to consider any requests. The hospice society had requested $750 to help sponsor an annual volunteer appreciation dinner. •A $1,250 contribution to the International Selkirk Loop was returned to the town after a proposed birding usage enhancement project did not proceed due to lack of funds. •An annual request for the town’s approval for the Creston Wave Swim Club to co-ordinate camping at the Creston and District Community Complex during its swim meet was approved. •No new residential building permits have been issued in 2012 and permits for renovations and commercial buildings total only $535,000, a dramatic drop from recent years, when community complex and Ramada Hotel construction kept the building trades busy. •Council will send a letter of support in Castlegar’s West Kootenay Regional Airport’s quest to bring the newly announced WestJet Airlines service to the West Kootenay.

RCMP bust 1,000-plant Haskins Road grow-op BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP took down a 1,000-plant indoor and outdoor marijuana grow-operation at a residence in the 4000 block of Haskins Road East on Saturday. A search continues for the residents, a female and her two children.

Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to 75 calls from June 11-17, Cpl. Monte Taylor said on Monday.

June 11 •A Wynndel resident reported being contacted by a cellphone service provider about someone with the same name and information attempting to register a phone in Ontario, possibly using identity theft. •After receiving a report of a female purchasing supplies typically used to produce an illegal drug, police located her and a male, who are staying in the bush near Kidd Creek Forest Service Road. Police were informed the chemicals were being used to extract gold from computer parts and denied dumping any toxic substances onto the ground or into the water. The couple also has 10 dogs. Police have notified conservation officers about their findings. •A female reported that her wallet and identification cards were missing after she gave an acquaintance a ride home. •A report was received about a June 4 afternoon hit and run in a restaurant parking lot on Highway 21. Directors disagree on water BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Regional District of Central Kootenay directors John Kettle and Larry Binks and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota failed to reach agreement on how to divvy up water costs from the Arrow Creek Water Treatment and Supply Service (ACWTSS) on Wednesday and voted to turn over the dispute to a former RDCK board chair. The directors met at Creston and District Community Complex on Wednesday to hold a preliminary service review meeting that was triggered when the Town of Creston and RDCK agreed to initiate the process. When Toyota, RDCK chair and Area B director Kettle and Area C director Binks were unable to agree to a new cost-sharing agreement, or other issues brought to the table by the town (the service’s major funder and user), a service review was initiated. A service review, RDCK chief administrative officer Jim Gustafson said, can be a relatively informal process, or it can become formalized with the appointment of a mediator. If an agreement still can’t be reached, the service review could be referred to the provincial government, which could impose a resolution. Gustafson cautioned the elected officials not to undertake a service review lightly. “Sometimes when you start to take things apart you can’t put them together again,” he said. An agreement on cost sharing appeared to be close, with the town agreeing to pay 59 per cent of the operating costs, but Binks was rankled after he said the three directors had earlier agreed to a 60/40 split. A resolution to the meeting by the town included a number of other issues, including: •“The town will not accept the assessed value of properties as a fair and equitable metric to determine cost sharing of the Arrow

Creek water system.” Steffan Klassen, Creston’s finances and corporate service director, estimated the town has about 80 per cent of the assessed property values in the area served by the ACWTSS. Earlier in the decade, a 63/37 town/RDCK cost share split was instituted based on estimated usage. On Thursday, town engineer Colin Farynowski said measurements since that agreement indicate a 59/41 usage split. •“Council requests the RDCK review the governance model in 2012 for the Arrow Creek Water Commission to incorporate an equitable voting structure based on the principal of consumption (user pay).” Currently, the ACWTSS is governed by a one director, one vote system, which leaves the town in a minority position when voting on resolutions or motions. •“A cost sharing agreement for the Erickson reservoir is not subject to negotiations related to development of a cost sharing agreement for the Arrow Creek water system, and instead shall be treated as a separate negotiation process.” Construction of concrete balancing reservoirs in Erickson is a priority. Creston constructed its own reservoir within its boundaries after the water treatment plant was built. The purpose of the service review, the directors agreed, is that “the parties agree the purpose of the review is to examine and develop options with respect to operations, governance, funding, cost recovery, cost allocation and expenditure of funds from the Arrow Creek Water Treatment and Supply Service is both funded and expended equitably among the service participants, as well as to establish a lasting framework for sustainability of the service.” A motion was passed to request former RDCK chair Gary Wright of New Denver to undertake the service review. Total costs of the review are not to exceed $50,000.

Amazing Race leads students around town BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Fruit Ninjas were the big winners in Adam Robertson Elementary School’s June 14 challenge based on the TV reality series, The Amazing Race. Grade 12 students Jackson Hawton and Cami Kepke helped lead the Grade 7 team of Madison Pommier, Harvey Pawsey, Jordan Wood, Mercedes Derosa and Anjali Ewing to victory, as they solved clues leading them to 18 checkpoints (17 at businesses) around Creston. Organized by ARES Grade 7 teachers Martin Stanley and Allison Kepke, this is the third year the school has put on the event, and it was bigger and better this time around. “Each year we’re getting a bit

more involved,” said Kepke. The students are on foot, and walk about 10 kilometres in the event, which takes about four hours. Clues led them to businesses as far apart as Cavell Street Dental Clinic and Beltane Nursery. At the dental clinic, their task before receiving another clue was to learn CPR; at another location, a team member was given a fake injury, which impacted the team’s play for the rest of the race. The goal was more than just the prestige and medals earned by the winning team — staff at the clue locations were marking them on politeness, manners and conduct. “Sometimes the community has an image of them being rowdy, scary, rude people,” said Kepke. “So they were going out to show the world they’re good kids.”

In May, I had the chance to spend half a day touring local farms and learning more about the importance of agriculture in the Creston Valley. The tour was organized by the Creston Valley Agriculture Society, which also provided a lovely local lunch. On our bus were Creston Mayor Ron Toyota, Regional District of Central Kootenay directors John Kettle, Larry Binks and Garry Jackman, all elected officials who need to understand, in dollars and cents and philosophically, the importance of this industry to our community. Media folks were also joined by RDCK and ministries of transportation and agriculture staff, Creston Valley Food Action Coalition members and, most importantly, several farmers. As we rode the bus between farms, we got to listen and talk to farmers and producers like Randy Meyer, Lew Truscott, Tom Tarzwell, Morris Hanson, Alvin Lang and members of the Harris family. Our afternoon began with a lunch made primarily from local food and then we heard a presentation from Susan and Gary Snow who, coincidentally, are featured elsewhere on these pages as part of our Meet Your Maker series. The Snows talked about many of the same issues as they do in today’s story — labour challenges, global competition, market demand and the opportunity to juice good cherries that are otherwise wasted. Our second stop was at EP Farms, where Robin EdgePartington continues his parents’ tradition in the dairy farm business. While Robin talked to the tour group his father, John, now 80 years of age, was out running the tractor on the fields, cutting feed. We lived near EP Farms for many

I’m not sure if you had heard the recent news story about the 11-yearold boy that went into cardiac arrest at the University of BC swimming pool early in June and was successfully revived by a couple lifeguards using an automated external defibrillator (AED). The lad, who had some cardiac history, was stabilized enough to get to the hospital and have a tiny defibrillator implanted in his chest and has shown no ill effects from his experience. This was one of the few times when you watch the news that you actually felt better after the story. The story also hits close to home, not only because it is in B.C. but also because those guards could be anyone performing the job of lifeguard in the province, assuming they are following the training regimen of the Lifesaving Society of BC. It also has a bit of impact because just that morning at about 6:45 a.m., I heard the alarm for the AED box in our lobby go off, which indicated the door to one of our two cabinets had been opened. I personally wasn’t alarmed because I knew the guards were doing their regular training on the care and operation of the units these past couple weeks, which represents just a small portion of the training required for the position. Not long after we opened, some-

The day’s last stop was Sutcliffe Farms on Indian Road, which was uncharacteristically quiet. while Uncle Bob is having his triple bypass and start chatting with the doctor about fishing lures or the scalloped potatoes in the cafeteria — at least, not if you still like Uncle Bob. Not all stories necessarily turn out as good as the UBC one, but lifeguards are trained and retrained, certified and recertified until the whole process hopefully becomes second nature — I’ve seen many times when an incident happens, that second nature kicks in and the procedure becomes a mechanical process of assessing and responding, which is a good thing. I remember years ago when we had a kids summer camp, and one of the vehicles the instructors were riding in to take the kids to Twin Bays lost control and rolled off the highway. Once the training kicked in for the lifeguard, it became a process; despite the fact that she was in the accident and that she was a teenager at the time. So, recapping, as you watch lifeguards do their patterns and rotations of scanning, they are not unapproachable (although perhaps talk to the ones cleaning first if at all possible), take their jobs seriously for your sake and do, upon occasion, smile. — wait, I’m kidding! In actuality, they are extremely focussed and constantly scanning the pool, doing head counts, anticipating who is going to do what, trying to keep the deck clear and communicating with their fellow guards via any number of a binder full of hand signals and motions. Some of you may remember the signs on the fence at the old pool stating, “Please do not talk to the lifeguard — that was there for a reason; perhaps while someone is standing in front of the guard, blocking their view and chatting about their latest recipe, that’s when the 11-year-old has a cardiac event and gets missed on a scan. Face it, although a different scope, you wouldn’t go into the operating room

Happy b’day to Canada

To the Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to wish a happy birthday to a very beautiful lady, who will be turning 145 years young on July 1, and her name is — you guessed it — Canada. We all love, respect and admire her greatly. In a sense, she is our mother, who very much loves us, as well, and we are her children. Now, to change the topic, just a little. National unity is more important than ever before, especially in this age of extremism. Our greatest strength as a people is to work together in mutual co-operation, just like a family, regardless of his or her politics, religious views, or social, cultural, financial or economic status. I also believe in complete equality between men and women, and the elimination of bigotry racism and bullying of any kind because they have no place in society. Beneath my conservative exterior, I possess a very warm heart, and am also compassionate, sentimental, nostalgic, emotional, spiritual, well educated and have a great sense of humour, but also incredibly strong-willed and able to hold my own when the going becomes tough. In conclusion, never forget the legacy of Sir John A. MacDonald, (1851891), our nation’s first prime minister and the Father of Confederation. The bi-centennial of his birthday will be on Jan. 11, 2015. This is why I believe plans should be made as soon as possible to make it a national event. I know it’s still three years from now, but there’s no sense waiting until the last moment! Everyone, take care, see you at the Canada Day celebrations, have a great summer and, remember, always think positively, be optimistic, have faith and never give up hope because the best

days for the motherland are yet to come. I would also like to offer my congratulations to Her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on her recent diamond jubilee, and may she reign for many more years to come. Allan Clement Creston

Had we been in the loop, this is what we would know: There is not a 30-year agreement with Ducks Unlimited. Rather, there is a non-binding memorandum of understanding (available on my website) for infrastructure upgrades and operations for now. A 30-year agreement requires the government to repeal the Creston Valley Wildlife Act, which they have not done and will not do until after an election, should the new government —whoever that may be — want to go that route. This is significant because the Liberals have ignored important MOUs once an election is over — just ask Simon Fraser University about the MOU for their Surrey campus. So inside the rhetoric, what we have is a desperate government delivering misleading announcements to curry favour with voters after a decade of neglect. This isn't fair to you or Ducks Unlimited. Regardless of how the Liberals operate on this issue, I remain committed to the best interests of the CVWMA. That involves you, partners like Ducks Unlimited and a transparent process. Seniors remember their pets

Pets — what a joy they are most of the time, but sometimes not so much. Remember when they were tiny pups or kittens and other baby species, so full of energy and all the times you

had to get up at night to reassure them that they were not alone? Then the fun stuff started: potty training, and exercising them to tire them out so they would listen to you or so they would sleep and then so could you. The disciplining — oh, what fun that is (laugh out loud). Then there are all the pictures you took, just like when you had your first child. The first time they barked so loud it scared them and they ran and hid. The time they ran so fast they couldn’t stop and went for a tumble. How proud you were when they did what you asked, like sit, stay, shake a paw, lie down or, the best, come.

How frustrated you would be when they just did what they wanted and would not listen to your commands! Then as they grew older, they would take your shoes, socks, papers and especially embarrassing items. They could be messy in the house. Pets have a way of getting into your heart no matter what they do, be they dogs, cats, fish, horses, sheep, gerbils, mice, snakes or many other kinds of animals. One must remember that these pets are not people and as such do not have the same feelings we do or the understanding as we do. They are what they are: pets. The seniors at the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors have had many experiences with pets over the years. Some are able to have one now while others are not allowed to have them in the facilities they live in, which is too bad — they make life a little brighter and help seniors to have a healthier outlook on life. It has been proven that seniors are mentally healthier when they have a pet companion. I, for one, have a dog and find that I am not so self-absorbed as I once was. I have a pet that I care about — I see to her needs and don’t look at all my aches and pains so much. We had a cat named Spots

that passed away recently from old age. He would sit and talk to you, “Meow, meow.” then stop and let you talk to him, then he would reply in his own way. What fun that was! I’m sure people thought I was a little bit loony talking to a cat. Della had a dog that was kept in the barn and cats that would wait for the cows to be milked so they could get their daily ration of milk; the cats would sit with their mouths open to get a squirt of milk. Other seniors had a variety of pets such as a Dalmatian, beagle, Scottish wire-haired terrier, German shepherd, chocolate labrador, chihuahua, great dane, English setter, springer spaniel, cocker spaniel, Shih Tzu, Persian cats, tabby, white cats, mixed breeds and so on. Horses were always fun on the farms, but not when you fell off or were bucked off. Seniors rode them to school when they were children, as the schools were often miles away. Oh, the wonderful stories the seniors can tell about their pets they have and or had! One lady got a dog from an ad in the paper and they made her promise to take good care of the dog. Another lady said the one dog of theirs was won in a poker game. The ladies that had cats loved them to pieces — true cat lovers. Many of the seniors who lived on farms had cats to keep down the mice, and cats in their lives as they grow older. One lady was a pet groomer at one time; she loved her job. Some of the names of their pets were and are Sheba, Ragdoll, Cotton, Mesha, Gizmo, Blondie, Pal, Maude, Sandy, Sunia, Patches, Tinker, Sweetie, Baby, Molly, Misty, Abby, Simon and the list is endless. The one thing to remember about pets is to keep them healthy with proper food and clean water. Keep their vaccinations up. If you are not going to breed your animal, the kindest thing you can do for them is to have them spayed or neutered. Seniors program seeking volunteers

Thanks to the generosity of the CrestonKootenay Foundation, the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors is now able to assist our seniors with important errands such as prescription pick-up, and stops at the post office and banks. We received a grant from the CKF to run this project and the seniors are delighted. Congratulations to the Creston Kootenay Foundation and the Friends of the Greenhouse for hosting the very successful grand soirée! Contacting shutin seniors and supTerry Nowak porting a seniors resource centre is currently not part of our mandate but it is a service that is badly needed in our community. We want to develop and train a core group of volunteers who will manage outreach services for isolated seniors. The government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors has agreed to support TAPS to recruit and train volunteers to make these things happen. The use of younger seniors as volunteers to assist older seniors is an opportunity to use the skills, training and expertise that recent retirees have. These services will increase the safety of seniors. It will also reduce the number of seniors who require medical supports because loneliness and depression are factors that contribute to poor health. Seniors will be able to remain independent longer. The benefits for our seniors are many, but what are the benefits for volunteers? If you have knowledge of the Creston community you will be able to share it with others. If you are new you will have access to a wealth of information. The skills you have from your employment will not be lost because you will be using them. You will have an opportunity to meet people and to give back to your community. Sharing of your time and energy will be rewarded with smiles and appreciation, and possibly a few hugs. We require skills such as organizational abilities, recording, evaluation and communications expertise, resource gathering and patience. If you have any of these qualities and you would like to join in this project, please call or come by TAPS. We are located at 402 22nd Ave. S. and our phone number is 250-428-5585. Terry Nowak is an outreach worker with the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

The dedicated volunteers of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats hosted another successful charity golf tournament May 5 at the Creston Golf Club. This year’s tournament was dubbed “Cats Helping Kids as the 2012 recipient charity was Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta. Many families from the Creston Valley benefit by having a “home away from home at Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta when their child is a patient at Alberta Children’s Hospital or Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. This year, 87 golfers participated in the best-ball scramble. Also, over 140 business/individuals supported the tournament with donations in kind or monetary sponsorships. Based on the support for this

year’s tournament it is clear to the Thunder Cats that Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta is important to our community. The support from the community allowed the Thunder Cats to award the top 14 teams (56 players) with prizes for participation and raise funds with donations for auctions. The mandate of the Thunder Cats charity golf tournament is to donate one-third of the total net profits to the recipient charity designated for each tournament. This year the Thunder Cats were very pleased to announce that they were able to send Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta a cheque for $5,750. The team extends its appreciation to all who supported this tournament; your support has helped both the Creston Valley Thunder Cats Junior B hockey team and Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta.

IT’S ELEMENTARY!

Students’ masks inspire stories

Brian Lawrence photo

The Canyon-Lister Elementary School Grade 4/5 class.

Book features masks, stories BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The individual pieces of a two-part art project by Canyon-Lister Elementary School’s Grade 4/5 class may have gone home, but the entire collection has been preserved in the form of a book. Under the instruction of Wynndel artist Sandy Kunze, students created clay masks inspired by stories they wrote. “Some of them did not necessarily turn out as planned, and they had to readjust their ideas and readjust their stories, said teacher Brian Ewashen. “I really liked the part where we made the story, said Cameron Nelson, whose story was about the half-human half-frog Frogman. “It gave us the use of some imagination so we could have a better idea for our mask. With the use of special tools, the masks could be changed during the sculpting process, explained Clayton Bjarnason, who added a beard, a mustache, a nose, eyebrows and eyes to his. Each student enjoyed a different part of the creative process. “I was happy about deciding how I was going to make it, said Marlise Tessman. “It reminded me of my family and my dog, Panda. I like how Emma Penner helped paint it. “I liked when you fired it and got to see it firing in the pot, said Laila Currie, referring to the raku process by which some pieces were fired; others were fired in a kiln. Kyla Blackmore took a different approach and wrote her story after her mask was created. “It was easier to make the story after the mask, she said. The finished masks were displayed at Morris Flowers during Focus on Youth, which ran in April, allowing many people to see the diverse selection — one based on Calgary Flames goalie Mikka Kiprusoff’s mask, a Muppet, one with a broken nose and tattoo, and one with a scratch that came from a fight in the story. The students agreed that the experience of creating the stories and masks was a good one. “The energy we put into the masks was good energy, said Olivia Kettle. Copies of the book are $35, and orders can be placed by calling Canyon-Lister Elementary School at 250-428-4161.

Clay — a gray, heavy, shapeless, slimy, malleable mass. Clay — a clump to shape, knead, fold, pinch, carve. Clay — a story untold. The Grade 4/5 students of CanyonLister Elementary School began with a vision: to use the medium of clay to create a mask that tells a story. Just as clay on a pottery wheel takes on its individual shape, so did the students’ artistic visions. With each day, the masks took on their own shapes and with it, the stories behind the masks had to change as well. In spite of a few frustrations and creative challenges, with perseverance each student’s mask and story became one. The sculpting, the distinctive features and the choice of colours added the personal details. The clay masks became a creative expression of each individual student; a story unfolded. The memories of this artistic endeavor will always include the visions of muddy fingers, lots of smiles and creative chaos! As their teacher, I am so very proud of each student’s willingness to take a risk, to be creative and to share their vision. Thank you to Sandy Kunze, our “classroom artist, for sharing your amazing artistic talents with all of us. You are an inspiration and a wonderful teacher. To Bruce Johnson: Your classroom assistance was invaluable. Thank you! — Brian Ewashen

Poor Bob Once there was a little boy named Bob. Bob had a big nose and had big blue eyes. Bob grew very fast. He still had his bike from when he was five. He had a lot of money saved for something. Bob lost his wallet when he was older. Bob was poor for a while. But Bob eventually found his wallet, and he was not poor anymore because he had a lot of money again. Bob thought of what he wanted to buy. Bob bought a house and a car. And, he bought a new pair of clothes. Bob got a job at a motorcycle shop. Once at the end of a shift Bob bought a motorcycle. And once when Bob was riding his motorcycle a twig cut his cheek and he had to get four stiches. — Colin Huss

The Sea Creature Capture

Once there was a bottlenose dolphin named Bignose. He was like most bottlenose dolphins except he was much more mischievous. One day, he didn’t want to stay by his mom Bubbles, so he swam far away before his mom could see where he went. He swam with his friend, Lary the Lobster, all around where Bignose’s pod protects that part of the ocean. Bignose told Lary about his escape from his mom. They talked and talked for a long time until Bignose’s dolphin sensed vibrations in the water coming toward him. Bignose remembers what his mom told him about vibrations. He thought that the vibrations were about as fast as a shark’s. He warned Lary and told him to follow him or hide. Lary decided to try to blend in in the coral. Bignose tried swimming the opposite way, away from the vibrations, but it was too late! He was surrounded by sharks! The leader of the “evil sharks named Master Kong didn’t notice Lary hiding in the coral. “Come with us! Master Kong said, threatening Bignose. Master Kong, the sharks and Bignose, swam for a little while, with Lary following from a safe distance until Master Kong said, “We’re here! Bignose saw a cage in the distance. “In there, give him food and lock him inside! ordered Master Kong. Bignose was locked in the cage for about two days. In those two days, Lary tried to steal the cage key to unlock Bignose, but the shark was guarding the key. On the third day, the sharks said they were going to another part of the ocean to hunt. They gave Bignose extra fish and swam off to hunt some fish. This was Lary’s chance! He crawled

over to the cage with the key and then unlocked Bignose. Right away, Bignose swam flips and summersaults, “I’m free, I’m free! “Shhhh! said Lary, “They’re going to hear us! “Where are we? But, then he felt vibrations that felt familiar! It was his mother’s! He swam to her and they hugged as dolphins hug and thanked Lary for saving him. Lary and the bottlenose dolphin family lived happily ever after and the sharks never captured dolphins again. That is why the dolphin on my mask is happy! — Emma Penner

Chewy

This story is about a monkey named Chewy. He’s five feet tall, his arm span is six feet long, and he is the smallest monkey in the community! This takes place in a monkey kingdom of Al Kardi. One day, officials threw Chewy out by grabbing his tongue. After Chewy was banished, he climbed to the tallest tree in the world. There was Titan, a huge eagle, sitting on his nest. Chewy talked about how he stole the fruit from his colony and was banished. Titan told him to apologize and ask if he could come back in the colony. Chewy thanked the eagle and climbed down the tree. When Chewy got down to the bottom, he apologized and tried to get back in the community. Each time he tried, the bodyguard threw him out. He went to meet with Vector, the Monkey King. Vector told him he needed to return the fruit he stole. Chewy told him he had already eaten it and wondered if he could go find more to replace it. Vector agreed. Chewy did just that. He lived happily ever after in the community and never stole again. — Colton Gibbons

Home Hardware wins award Green returning to Snoring Sasquatch HOME HARDWARE BUILDING CENTRE

Every year more than 1,080 Home Hardware stores across Canada vie for the company’s Proud of My Home Award. This year, Creston’s Home Hardware Building Centre has been recognized with the top honour. Dealer-owners Robert and Kim Schepers were awarded at a ceremony at the company’s corporate office in St. Jacobs, Ont., at the semi-annual Home Hardware Market.

Twenty stores from across Canada are selected each year based on their efforts to achieve the highest standards in retailing, merchandise presentation, staff performance and overall quality of the store. “We’re very excited to be included among the top stores in Canada, and want to thank our staff for all of their hard work,” said Robert. “We are proud to serve our community by providing expert advice and top quality products and services at competitive prices.”

To receive the Proud of My Home Award, Home stores must demonstrate excellence in staff performance and customer service, interior presentation (including clear signage, tidiness, and merchandise presentation and displays), exterior presentation (including cleanliness and attractive window displays), staff training and participation in dealer network initiatives. “The Proud of My Home Award represents the value behind strong team work and demonstrates the importance of dedicated people working together to serve their communities,” said Paul Straus, president and CEO of Home Hardware Stores Limited. “Home Hardware Building Centre Creston truly encompasses all that Home Hardware represents. Congratulations to Robert and Kim and their staff.” One hundred per cent Canadian owned and operated, Home Hardware Stores Limited has a presence in every Canadian province and territory and is the country’s largest independent, Dealer-owned hardware, lumber, building materials and furniture cooperative. Founded on Jan. 1, 1964, by 122 independent hardware dealers, the co-operative now includes more than 1,080 stores, under the Home Hardware, Home Building Centre, Home Hardware Building Centre and Home Furniture banners, with annual collective retail sales of more than $5 billion. Home Hardware’s independent dealer-owners, recognized by the North American Retail Hardware Association as Canada’s best-trained dealer group, have access to 100,000 quality brand name and private label products, a worldclass distribution system and draw upon the power of Home Hardware’s network to provide their local communities with top quality products and services at competitive prices.

Ashram hosting annual social YASODHARA ASHRAM

Yasodhara Ashram in Kootenay Bay invites you to its 17th annual Strawberry Social on June 23 from 1-4 p.m. Come and meet with friends and neighbours while enjoying delicious strawberry shortcake — on the house! You can also listen to the Many Bays Band and shop at the massive used book and garage sale. Proceeds from the sales will support the Riondel Community Hall re-roofing project. The ashram, founded in 1963, is celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, making it one of the longest-running spiritual centres in North America. Called Canada’s best yoga retreat by Reader’s Digest, the ashram is innovative and educational. Attracting students from as far away as Australia and Europe,

the ashram is also active locally — contributing to youth initiatives, school mentorship programs and food security projects, as well as buying and hiring locally. Winner of the 2009 Environmental Tourism Award, the ashram is a leader in environmental initiatives with a goal to be carbon neutral by 2013. Upcoming programs include a teen retreat, and “Living the Practice”, a four-day program led by the ashram’s spiritual director, Swami Radhananda, based on her new book with the same title. Retreats and workshops varying from two days to 10 days in length are available year round. Instead of flying to Thailand for a retreat, a recent Nelson visitor said she found everything she needs right here! The Strawberry Social started in 1996 to celebrate comple-

tion of Mandala House — a beautiful bookstore, teaching room, dining room, kitchen and office complex. Local builders, tradespeople and businesses were honoured at the first event, when the ashram opened its doors with free strawberries and an invitation to find out what this place is all about. The tradition continues — come eat, schmooze, tour the beautiful grounds and the Temple of Light. Enjoy the sweet taste of summer with friends and neighbours. And help build community! SUBMITTED Tucker Green is returning to the Snoring Sasquatch on June 29 on his way from Toronto to Vancouver for his cross-Canada summer tour. The Toronto-based Americana musician didn’t hesitate to plan a date in Creston as the last time he was in town the show was one of his tour highlights.

“The people in Creston are so welcoming, and as soon as you roll into town, you feel like you’re home,” said Green. “It’s one of my favourite places to stop.” Now, he’s back for round two as the always-enjoyable art house hosts another evening of incredible songwriting and performance. When Green says that he works hard, he really means it. The 27-yearold songwriter is embarking on his second cross-Canada tour in less than a year, visiting cities between his current home in Toronto and where he grew up, Langley, B.C. The tour is a way to stay in touch with longtime fans and make new ones in places he’s never played. “I’m really looking forward to seeing familiar faces from the last time we travelled across, but am

also hoping to make some new friends along the way,” said Green. Green recently moved from Langley to Toronto to pursue music and has been surprised by the momentum already. His community has broadened and the opportunity to work with new artists has been positive. This tour will be mainly solo shows, occasionally accompanied by other artists on tour with intersecting paths. Green says that this is one of the first tours where after announcing dates, he started receiving emails from other bands saying that they would be in the same cities on the same dates. “You really feel like you’ve cultivated an incredibly large music community when things like this happen,” he said. “Even though the road can be exhausting, knowing that other people are invested in music enough to be travelling around as well is amazing.” Green is known for his wellcrafted songs and engaging live performances. It is rare to attend a show without being prompted to sing along or laughing as he relays an endearing anecdote. Fans make a point of coming out to see him when he’s in town because they know that it will be an entertaining night of great songs, skilled musicianship, and warm community. The doors to the show open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8. Advance tickets are $10 at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $12 at the door. ladies member’, making breakfast for our men? “The lifestyle was certainly healthier, Gary says, thinking about a musician friend who had partied himself to death at the age of 40. But the downside of farming was something Susan was forced to once again come to terms with. “The only regret I really have is that, with a kid, when you are a farmer you don’t have much summer fun. As a child, our one big summer vacation was driving to the prairies so Dad could check out a beekeeping operation. Gary’s childhood summer memories included fishing at the side of his father. “Now I don’t look forward to summer because it comes before I’ve finished my spring work, he laughs. Susan says that getting into the juice business has stretched the busy summers into fall and winter. “Before we starting making juice in 2009, at least we had some time to relax after harvest. Now our falls are busy with making juice and our winters are filled up with marketing and making business plans and getting ready for next year. Each year, the Snows are asked to demonstrate their products at food shows and retail locations. Just a few weeks ago, they headed

She met her Kansas City-born love at a Creston Valley Blossom Festival and the pair lived in Kalispell, Mont., from 1987-1996. Gary continued with his music career and Susan spent their first year together as a roadie. “Six people and a basset hound in a big diesel bus, is the way she describes it. She moved into hospital administration after their son, Micah, was born. In 1995, Gary got his first real taste of farm life when he came up to Creston to help his father-inlaw with the cherry harvest. “He came back so excited, Susan recalls. Soon, the possibility of returning to Canada was on the table. Susan was finding her work more stressful, Gary was tiring of the constant travel and Micah would have the chance to grow up among family. Not long after they made the move, Susan found herself wondering, “How did I go from hospital administration to ‘Lutheran

Since 2004, their farm has been certified by Global GAP (Good Agricultural Practices). The annual certification process assigns a unique identity to each producer and ensures the producer records all relevant product and farming practices information. Global GAP standards are primarily designed to reassure consumers about how food is produced on the farm by minimizing detrimental environmental impacts of farming operations, reducing the use of chemical inputs and ensuring a responsible approach to worker health and safety. “We know how to grow good fruit,â€? Gary says. “We are kind of the poster kids for the ‘save the family farm’ movement.â€? Tabletree products, with no preservatives or artificial additives, are now available as far away as Toronto. now, to start us on the road to recovery. How to Boil a Frog is the creation of Vancouver-based television writer and producer Jon Cooksey. Motivated by his concern for his 12-year-old daughter’s future, Cooksey set out to identify the threats, and present steps towards solutions, in a humorous, comprehensible way. Through his own example, Cooksey demonstrates how we can all awake the hero within and make meaningful change for ourselves and our children. Filmed in 2010, How to Boil a Frog shows some familiar faces (among them former British Columbia premier Gordon Campbell) and presents new ideas in a refreshing and compelling way. The 88-minute film will show at the library (531 16th Ave. S.) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call the library at 250-428-4141.

The Creston and District Public Library presents the documentary film How to Boil a Frog on June 23. This eco-comedy shows the consequences of too many people using up the Earth’s resources and suggests five things each and every one of us can easily do to save the earth and enhance our own lives at the same time. Today, there is no shortage of films that focus on the future of our planet and impress upon us that our exploitative consumer habits, pollution, declining oil reserves, population overshoot and climate change are creating a converging calamity that humans must act upon now in order to secure any kind of future for the human race. What sets How to Boil a Frog apart is that it plainly outlines five basic things that we can all do

Picky market prompts changes from farmers

Who: Susan and Gary Snow What: Tabletree juices and reductions Where: Their orchard on Erickson Road When: Since 2009 Why: Because they could see the writing on the wall when their pickers started making more money from the cherry harvest than they were.

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Blame it on the market, a fussy mass of consumers around the world that demands perfect, flawfree fruit, refusing to give anything less so much as a second look. That change, as much as anything, pushed Susan and Gary Snow into deciding they had to do more than grow late harvest cherries and export them around the world, not knowing how much they would get paid until months later. “We used to have maybe a three per cent cull rate,” Susan says.

“Now that number can grow to 20 to 40 per cent. And there’s nothing really wrong with the cherries; it’s just that the market won’t accept even the slightest flaw.” (To make matters worse, buyers on the other side of the globe can reject the shipment and growers have no recourse.) On a 25-acre farm, that’s a lot of cherries to dump, something no grower is very happy about. “We just knew we needed something to use perfectly good cherries and to help us diversify,” Gary said. “When Creston got into the late season cherry business there was no competition in the world. Now there’s lots and it isn’t going to get any easier to compete.” Even if the cherry crop could be pushed to ripen later in the season, there isn’t sufficient local labour to bring in the harvest. The bulk of pickers are young, many from Quebec, and they begin to head back to school or elsewhere as the end of August nears. Adding juice making to the family farm operation seems like a natural progression, but it has been slow going. The couple, who celebrate 25 years of marriage this year, spent a long-time researching and testing ways to make cherry juice that would taste as good as fruit fresh from the tree. Then there was the challenge of coming up with the investment capital to build facilities, buy equipment and market a

product that has gained consumer acceptance. Tabletree Enterprises Ltd. — “To the table from the tree” — got a boost when the Snows placed second in a provincial innovation competition that awarded them with a $100,000 grant to help get the business up and running. From the outset, Tabletree black cherry juice got rave reviews from customers. It’s high in nutrients and has the antioxidants and anthocyanins that health-conscious consumers value. A proprietary process keeps not only the cherry flavour, but the bright red colour that makes the juice look as good as it tastes. With a pound of cherry juice in every 200 ml bottle (and triple that in the culinary sauce), the juice packs a nutritional punch. That Susan is in the farming business is hardly a surprise. Her dad, Lou Truscott, has spent his life in fruit farming and beekeeping. In fact, the Truscott family has been farming in the Creston Valley for more than a century. Her uncle, Chuck and brother, Bill, have also made their mark in the business. Bill operates Truscott Farms, an enterprise that includes the popular Highway 3 fruit stand in Erickson. Lou founded that fruit stand and Chuck operated it for many years. That Gary ended up a farmer was less predictable. “I always said I didn’t want to marry an orchardist or a beekeeper,” Susan laughs.
