Meadowbrook residents want park, not quarry

Gregarious Gardener

Submitted Several hundred concerned citizens converged on Cherry Creek Falls recently to demonstrate their opposition to a proposed quarry and their support for creation of a regional park. People arrived in vehicles, on foot, on bicycles and on horseback. The newly formed Meadowbrook Community Association had organized the “Save the Falls Picnic” but the vast majority of those attending did not reside in Meadowbrook. Many no longer live nearby but retain fond childhood memories of sliding down the Falls, learning to ¿sh, and picnicking with their families. RDEK Area E Director, Jane Walter, Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae, and the BC Liberal candidate in the next provincial election, Doug Clovechok, were on hand to show their support. Director Walter stated, “The people have clearly spoken. They will not accept a quarry anywhere in the vicinity of this treasured natural attraction. They will not tolerate losing access to a prime recreation area that has been enjoyed for generations”. The Picnic was the kickoff to the Meadowbrook Community Association’s membership drive. More than 100 individuals who want to preserve and enhance the Meadowbrook area became members by paying an annual fee of $10.00. Anyone over the age of 18 wishing to become a member is asked to leave a message at mca2012bm@ gmail.comand a member of the association will be in touch. Participants had the opportunity to review tentative proposals for the park and record their impressions and suggestions. Many also signed the guest book and expressed opinions on the issue of a quarry or park. Kimberley City Bakery, Mark Creek Market, the Bean Tree, Wildsite, and the three butchers located in Meadowbrook: Cliff’s Meats, Gwinner’s Country Butcher, and Kimberley Sausage and Meats supplied hot dogs, smokies, sweets, soft drinks and coffee. $1 OFF Any 1 Gallon Tomato Plant

, ROCK OF AGES

Columbia Theatre Cranbrook

When it comes to the most popular vegetable grown in gardens across the country, the tomato has taken the number one spot for many years. There is a good reason for the tomato’s popularity; after all, it is one of the healthiest, most versatile and tastiest vegetables. The health benefits of tomatoes are becoming more and more documented. On top of the list is the tomato's high content of anti-oxidants a known cancer fighter. There are also studies that cite the fruit's power in preventing heart disease and helping with high cholesterol. Botanically speaking, tomatoes are a fruit even though they are mainly used in savoury dishes. There are many dishes that would just not be the same without the tangy, fresh flavour of tomatoes. Tomatoes can be grown in the garden or even in a pot on your deck or balcony, provided they get plenty of sun, food and can be pollinated by either nature's insects, a paintbrush or a fruit set spray. There are almost as many varieties of tomatoes as there are uses for this fabulous fruit. The key is to pick the varieties that fit your lifestyle and taste. There are later varieties, such as the popular Beefsteak tomato that takes all season to mature into a beautiful, big and firm tomato. Others mature fairly early, such as Early Girl that produces medium-sized fruit in 20-30 days. If you are looking for a nice trellis plant with cherry tomato-sized fruit for your balcony, take a look at the Patio, Sweet 100 and Yellow Pear varieties. These all produce fabulous, small tomatoes that are perfect for eating right off the vine or popping into salads. Another great variety for growing on a deck or patio is the Tumbler Tomato. They are considered to be a cherry tomato; however they are larger than for example the Sweet 100. They have been bred to tumble out of a hanging basket. They bear a huge amount of fruit, but do require very regular watering and feeding since their growth is so intensive. Tomaccios - or “raisin tomatoes” - are another great option if you are looking for a snack-sized tomato. This one is grown for its high sugar content and makes a sweet treat fresh off the vine or dried where its sweetness is intensified. Tomaccios are bred to dry naturally in clusters that are cut off the vine and the end product can be snacked on like dried fruit or used in salads or wherever you would use sun-dried tomatoes. Brandywine, Roma, Sub-Arctic… there are too many tomato varieties to mention. A true tomato lover will probably plant several varieties so that they can harvest the different kinds of tomatoes all summer long. Remember to plant in good, rich soil, fertilize with proper tomato food and tomatoes love sun, so plant in a well lit spot.

ety of Cranbrook are excited to announce the recent hiring of Delaney Kunitz as Social Researcher for the Living Wage Project. The Living Wage project will focuses on the calculation of $14.16/hour, which is higher than minimum wage, and the ways we can support the many working families in Cranbrook are living below or at that measure. The Cranbrook Social Planning Society Families began the Living Wage project in Cranbrook in 2011 because “Families are working harder – often holding down more than one job – and yet they’re still struggling to make ends meet according to Dana Osiowy, Board Chair. The Cranbrook Social Planning Society includes a number of key community service organizations like ANKORS, the United Way, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cranbrook, East Kootenay Child Care Resource and Referral Program and community members at large. The goal of the Social Planning Society is to improve the living circumstances of individuals and community through social planning activities, coordinated research, collaborative engagement, and strategic action. Working with the community, Kunitz will be collecting stories and experiences of people struggling to survive at or below the wage of $14.16 per hour. A

community’s living wage was calculated by Caitlin Etherington from Interior Health as the Regional Population Health Facilitator. The calculation was made in conjunction with the University of Victoria and by looking at local expenses, including rent and childcare, plus government transfers minus deductions. It is very important to remember that the Living Wage is not minimum wage - it is the minimum a person needs to make to be able to afford basic necessities. “No should have to decide between paying the mortgage and buying groceries, Kunitz says. “My goal in working with this project is to gather real life stories and struggles to share with local business and agencies within the community. It’s important for our community to realize that those living at or below the Living Wage are not the minority and we should work around this and collaborate as a community to support these workers. Kunitz will be working over the summer to compile stories and create communications and support materials for the Living Wage in Cranbrook. If you or anyone you know would be interested in sharing a story, please contact Delaney at 250.489.3111 or via e-mail at delaney. kunitz@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca

Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market This Summer

Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning from June 23 to October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market. The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time. Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only. This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.” For more information please visit – www.bctransit.com.

Late May through June is historically the time of year does give birth to their fawns. Does will drive away their offspring from the previous year and look for a secluded place to give birth. If you come across a fawn, it is best to leave it alone. It is also important for residents to remember that does with fawns can be quite aggressive. Clean. Drain. Dry. These simple steps will prevent zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species from spreading into the waterways of the Kootenays. Aquatic invasive species, such as zebra mussels, Eurasian water-milfoil and New Zealand mudsnails have devastating impacts where they are introduced. They can ruin ¿shing and recreational oppor-

tunities, alter aquatic habitat for plants and animals, and block water intake structures for hydro power. “Hydropower facility costs associated with an infestation include the installation of control systems, antifouling paints, cleaning, and potentially, lost power production caused by clogging of the trash racks.” says Sheila Street, Chair of the Central Kootenay Aquatic Invasive Species Working Group. “In

a US Columbia Basin impact study, the total estimated capital cost of a zebra mussel infestation for hydropower facilities, not including power losses, is estimated at over $8,800 per mega watts of hydro plant capacity with about $160 annual operating cost per mega watt capacity.” Although no impact studies have been conducted on the Canadian side of the Basin to date, with capacity of about 7500 MW on our side that translates to about $7.8 million in potential economic impact. “Our waters are precious” says Margaret

affect all of us. It could mean anything from higher hydro bills for all of us, or taking the kids to the beach and ¿nding nothing but a smelly bed of dead mussels.” Aquatic invasive species hitch rides on boats, equipment, ¿shing waders, and other gear to spread into new water bodies. If there is a place for water to collect, there is a chance that zebra mussels or other invasive species may be transported. Boats heading for BC that have zebra mussel stowaways have been stopped at checkpoint stations in Idaho and Washington; however, there are currently no checkpoints for boaters coming from eastern Canada. Luckily, zebra mussels have not been detected in BC waters yet although early detection monitoring activities for the species has been very limited in BC. “We can stop their spread by cleaning boats and equipment of visible debris, draining water from all conceivable places (including bilge, buckets, ballast water and wells) and letting boats and equipment dry for 30 days before entering a new body of water” says Crystal Klym, Program Manager for the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC). “These simple acts can protect our waters.” With funding from the Columbia Basin Trust and FortisBC, and in partnership with SLSS and the Province of BC, the CKIPC is installing signs at boat launches on Slocan Lake and associated waterways to remind users to Clean, Drain, and Dry. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” says Klym. “By preventing these species from entering our lakes and rivers, we can save millions of dollars in impacts in the future”. For more information, or if you would like to sponsor a sign, contact CKIPC at 250-352-1160 or see www.kootenayweeds.com.

Following consultation with staff, parents and community members in May 2010 School District 5 (SD5) Board of Trustees developed a new district policy limiting pesticide use at school locations called Application of Pesticides to District Buildings or Grounds (policy section 4.23). According to Trustee Chris Johns, who chaired the SD5 Pesticide Committee in 2010, the policy has led to a signi¿cant reduction in pesticide use. However, maintenance staff has determined that there are seven locations throughout the District where alternative measures have not been suf¿cient. Three of these locations are at the District Board of¿ce in Cranbrook. “However, there are a few school locations where we have to consider immediate risks to student safety. For example, in Cranbrook gopher holes have become a tripping hazard. In the Elk Valley there are invasive weeds growing through the asphalt which remain resistant to alternate methods of removal, including digging them out by hand,” said Johns. According to Johns District staff pursued and tracked alternative measures, per Board policy, before considering limited pesticide applications. “Our policy requires that we only use pesticide application as the last resort and only within an integrated pest and turf management plan using best practice and the safest known legal products.” Spraying is expected to take place as early as June 22nd, 2012. As has been past practice signage will be in place and the public is encouraged to avoid entering these areas during the times posted. Boom sprayers are also being used to apply liquid fertilizer as part of the District’s alternative weed control program. Johns says the District will continue to explore alternate methods to spraying. “We knew that there might be some problem areas as we work on reducing pesticide use, but we remain committed to the reduction and to always look for safe alternatives.”

in small-scale farming and who have no desire to compete with industrial enterprises must be very creative in order to avoid bankruptcy or emotional depression. A great deal of investment is required in order to turn a pro¿t in agriculture — three to ¿ve times more than for commercial or industrial enterprises. It is no surprise, then, that real pro¿ts for small farms remain low. The causes are many and include the uncertainties of the profession, insuf¿cient markets, inÀation,

combined with weather problems, the uncertainties of world markets for agricultural products, ¿nancial pressures, and competition from much larger or industrial-sized producers. It begs the question: how can small farmers earn a decent income when they are so in debt and subject to such unpredictable revenues? Small farmers suffer from the uncertainty of the future when they cannot benefit from a protected market and quotas, as in the Canadian system of

supply management for milk, poultry, and eggs. But the price of buying a milk quota drags down new farmers by increasing farm prices altogether. There is little incentive to invest and grow to a more competitive size. On top of that, farmers often feel isolated. The lack of solidarity in the agricultural world is a generational phenomenon that has developed with today’s ¿erce competition. The permanent risk of bankruptcy, the burden of debt, the dif¿culty in ¿nding workers, and the impossibility of taking vacations often lead to depression and high stress levels. The latter is no small hindrance: the social and economic cost of stress is great, representing millions or even billions of dollars in health care. Bankruptcy is often avoided only because of moonlighting and the outside income of a spouse. The “buy local” movement, which is expanding rapidly, is creating new markets. Nearly 150,000 farms in the U.S.A. sell their products directly to the public, a ¿gure that has doubled over the last ¿ve years. Agricultural products are, moreover, in great demand around the world. Exports could be another solution for small producers, on condition that they work together. Cooperating will help them increase sales and achieve consistency in meeting market needs.

Symphony tonight The Symphony of the Kootenays wraps up its 2011-2012 season with a blockbuster free concert on Friday, June 22 as part of the Aboriginal Day Festival at the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino. In honour of National Aboriginal Day, the Symphony will perform Odawa composer Barbara Croall’s ‘Stories from Coyote’. A piece ¿lled with the sounds of the mountains – bird calls, rustling wind, crackling ice – its premiere in Kamloops in 2000 met with critical acclaim, with local media reporting that “The stories were both interesting and fun, and the music fascinating.” The concert will open with John Burge’s ‘Rocky Mountain Overture’, a sonically vibrant overture written speci¿cally for outdoor performance, to reverberate around a valley in the Rocky Mountains. Rounding out the programme are Modest Mussorgsky’s popular and stunning showpiece, ‘A Night on Bald Mountain’, a collection of some of Johann Strauss’s bestloved compositions – including ‘Radetzky March’, ‘Klipp-Klapp Polka’ and others – and works by Shostakovich and Michael Conway Baker.

how they change over time. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for residents who care about wildlife to be involved in collecting valuable information” says Juliet Craig, Coordinating Biologist for the Kootenay Community Bat Project. “They don’t need any special skills and kids can be involved.” Residents wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat-house, barn, bridge or attic, and count bats as they Ày out at twilight. They record the ¿nal count along with some basic information on weather conditions. Two counts are done between June 1 and 21 before pups are born, and two more between July 21 and August 15 when pups are Àying with their mothers. “We know relatively little about bats including basic information on population numbers” says Craig. “This information will be extremely valuable, particularly if it is collected annually.” Of the sixteen species of bats in BC, half of them are considered vulnerable or threatened and an additional species, the little brown myotis, has recently been assessed for federal Endangered status. Information on local bat species and their roost sites is an important part of bat conservation and management. “If people want to get involved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we do our best to match them to a roost site nearby” says Craig. “We also mail out hand clickers to make counting easier.” To download Annual Bat Count instructions and data forms, or to register for the bat count, visit www.kootenaybats. com under the ‘Get Involved’ link or call 250352-2260. The Kootenay Community Bat Project also provides information on safely evicting bats from buildings or identifying bat species in roost sites.

“Lets’ emót” one heart, one mind, one family. Le

Last year’s continued economic recovery was due mainly to growth in the Kootenay’s burgeoning service sector. Looking ahead, as ground breaks on a number of major new projects, this positive economic momentum should continue into the coming year. According to the BC Check-Up, Regional Edition, after three years of job losses, the labour market in our region rallied in 2011. Employment rose by 2,700, or 3.9 per cent, a solid gain. Last year’s employment growth was driven by the services-producing sector, which saw an increase of 4,000 jobs. Full time positions accounted for two thirds of all job creation, suggesting an underlying strength in last year’s employment gains. Employment in accommodation and food services grew by 1,200 jobs, reÀecting a growing number of workers in both accommodation services and food and drinking establishments. Other industries posting sizeable gains included health care and social assistance, which grew by 1,000 jobs, and transportation and warehousing which posted 900 new jobs. Last year we saw renewed growth in the construction industry, which resulted in a gain of 800 jobs. While work opportunities for contractors diminished due to less building permits, new major project construction and commercial developments generated increased employment for construction workers. Forestry, ¿shing, mining, and oil and gas also reported a modest improvement of 300 new jobs, as the number of workers involved in both logging, and mineral exploration and extraction activity increased. The report also highlighted the fact that the Kootenay’s youth unemployment rate shrank by 2.8 percentage points in 2011, to reach 6.8 per cent; this drop may be explained by more young people choosing to attend full-time postsecondary training, or leaving the region in search of employment elsewhere. Regardless, this rate was the second lowest in the province and is 4.7 per cent lower than the provincial average

Investment indicators in our region are mixed. The value of major project construction underway jumped to $3.8 billion; however the total value of all major project investment declined slightly from $6.9 billion to $6.7 billion, when comparing the fourth quarters of 2010 and 2011. Thirteen projects were underway in the fourth quarter of 2011, including the Waneta Hydroelectric Expansion Project ($900 million); the Hugh Keenleyside Dam Spillway Gate Upgrades ($94 million);

The family of the late Kenneth Angus McLennan would like to express their deep appreciation to all those who offered such kindness, support and messages of sympathy and comfort during Ken’s long ordeal. He was a humble and humorous man who never gave up hope. The nurses and care aides on the 3rd floor, and the physio staff, need to be commended for giving Ken and his family quality time and making his struggle so much more pleasant with your beautiful smiles and cheerful voices. Your kindness “beyond the role of duty” will always be remembered. A very special thank you to Dr. Lenz for comfort and support throughout this journey. We will forever be grateful. To all the many friends and visitors, your timely words, phone calls and comforting gestures will never be forgotten. A special thanks to a special friend Neil. Your bedside attendance was so meaningful to Ken. To Laird, thank you for the most “light and breezy” tribute. To Gary, thank you for keeping our lives organized. To Kevin and Kelly, thank you for being at Ken’s side. We hope our words express our heartfelt thanks to everyone. He will be truly missed.
