TEACHERS DISPUTE

Deadline looming for contract talks AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Rallies across the province this week were intended as reminders to the public: teachers are still trying to negotiate a contract. “We’ve made a lot of compromises [in terms of contract],” Quesnel and District Teachers’ Association president Teri Mooring said. “If we don’t reach a settlement it’s not because we didn’t negotiate.” Teachers have been attempting to negotiate a contract with the provincial government for close to a year. Now negotiations with appointed mediator Dr. Charles Jago are coming to a close Friday, with hopes for an agreement unlikely. “We need to meet in the middle somewhere,” Mooring said. If an agreement isn’t reached, Jago is tasked with writing recommendations for both parties. “The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation has agreed to take part in the government’s mediation process in good will,” Mooring added. “We certainly hope and expect that this process will result in an agreement that we can take to our members.” Another intention of the rallies was to draw attention to the situation in the Cowichan School district. The Cowichan Board of Education submitted a deficit budget due to their determination to restore services and supports that have been lost due to 10 years of cuts. The trustees determined they need $3.7 million in additional revenue to cover their restoration plans. These plans were developed in consultation with the public, employees and Aboriginal community. The Cowichan Board has been threatened by the Liberal government with removal for their actions. “It is inspiring to see a group of trustees dedicated to improving the public education system to the point of taking a public stand,” Mooring said. “We all know $3 billion has been taken out of the system over the last 10 years but few are willing to actually do something proactive to restore what has been lost. “It is important that we remember the losses have resulted in increased class sizes, fewer specialist teachers and a reduction of supports across the system.” Premier Christy Clark has said the government is ready to impose legislation in the summer if a deal isn’t reached by the end of the month.

Fraser River flooding Not all residents are unhappy about the high water levels. This young man was thrilled with the makeshift splash pool. The Quesnel and Fraser Rivers reached their peak Wednesday, reaching 471.7 m above sea level. Flood stage is 472.3. While rivers are now receding slightly, hot temperatures mixed with heavy rain forecasted could mean levels could peak again. Autumn MacDonald photo

When the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North opens in late 2012, northern B.C. residents will be able to receive radiation therapy for the first time in their home region. The new service will be provided through two state-of-theart linear accelerators (radiation therapy units) now in place at the facility being constructed in Prince George. The two pieces of equipment are valued at more than $3 million each. The units arrived in March and since then the centre’s medical physics team has worked to install and program them. Ongoing calibrating and rigorous testing will continue over the next several months to ensure the devices will be ready to provide safe and accurate treatment. The new facility will be the sixth regional cancer centre operated by the BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority. The other centres are in Abbotsford, Kelowna, Surrey, Vancouver and Victoria.

The new centre will serve more than 750 patients annually. About 60 per cent of people diagnosed with cancer receive radiation therapy at some point in the course of their treatment. “The BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North’s new radiation therapy equipment will bring the latest in technology to northern patients. We have an excellent team that is working hard to complete commissioning of the units so that treatment can begin late this year,” Dr. Ivo Olivotto, vice-president responsible for radiation therapy, BC Cancer Agency said.

Linear accelerators provide the radiation therapy used to treat a variety of cancers. Radiation therapy makes use of high-energy xrays to kill tumour cells. Radiation therapy is useful as curative treatment for some types of cancer and also to relieve symptoms if cancer spreads. Radiation may be used on its own, or in conjunction with chemotherapy or surgery. The radiation therapy units at the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North are the most high-end and technologically integrated units available on the market. The centre also features doorless treatment

rooms, allowing patients to undergo high-dose radiation therapy without the need for a heavy lead door, providing a less intimidating environment. “The radiation therapy treatment, which will be provided through the new cancer centre, will both complement and add to the services provided through Northern Health’s cancer clinic network. We look forward to continued partnership through the Northern Cancer Control Strategy in further strengthening cancer care delivery across our region.” Cathy Ulrich, president and CEO, Northern Health said. The Northern Cancer Control Strategy is a joint partnership between Northern Health, BC Cancer Agency and the Provincial Health Services Authority. It is focused on enhancing the continuum of cancer services in the North, including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, supportive and palliative care. –Northern Health

Quesnel artist receives $10,000 scholarship DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Chelsey Kuhn, 19, is Kelowna bound, with a $10,000 scholarship to study at the Centre for Arts and Technology. After graduating high school, Kuhn wasn’t sure which career path was right for her, so she took some time off to discover her passions. “She decided she would love to train for a career in animation,” marketing coordinator at the school, MaryBeth Lafferty, explained. Despite being unsure about the cost associated with her training in animation, Kuhn decided to study in Kelowna starting in July, which was when the Centre for Arts

and Technology was announcing recipients of their president’s scholarship. “The applications went out nationwide and we received a lot of great applicants,” Lafferty said. “It was Chelsea’s passion, determination and raw talent that really made her application stand above the rest and it really paid off.” Kuhn’s application stood out with her inclusion of reference letters, an interview with a professional animator and two animation shorts, when only one was required. Kuhn admits she wasn’t sure how her application held up against the others who were after the scholarship. “Since I took some time to decide on

Kuhn had a hard time coming to grips with the fact she had beaten out the competition to secure the scholarship. “I just couldn’t believe I was chosen,” she explained. “As soon as I got off the phone, I told my parents.” Kuhn chose a career in animation as it’s something she has always taken an

says her influence comes mostly from nature. Kuhn has a range of interests when it comes to what she likes to draw. “I don’t really have a favorite thing to draw or paint,” she said. “I go through phases, I love doing landscapes, but I also love doing animals and buildings. “But right now, I really want to do portraits.” Kuhn is looking forward to having a career which she will enjoy for a long time.

“I am most excited about creating something people will enjoy and having a job that I know I’ll love doing everyday,” she said. As for which part of the program she’s mostly looking forward to, one part sticks out for Kuhn. “I’m excited to learn how to make my characters come to life with the 3D animation programs,” she explained. There is no doubt Kuhn has set her sights high and has set ambitious goals for herself. “I am hoping to one day work as an animator for a company like Dreamworks or Pixar and create movies like Shrek and Tangled.” For now, Kuhn is counting down the

days until the move to Kelowna and basking in the excitement of her achievement. “Every time I think about it I get excited.” she said. “I am so grateful.” The Centre for Arts and Technology has three campuses nationwide, the Kelowna campus, one in Halifax and one in Fredericton. The Kelowna campus opened in 2002 and offers programs such as interior design, graphic design, digital filmmaking and veterinary hospital assistant. How can timber supply in BC’s central interior be increased? Forests make up nearly two thirds of the province and are an important economic, social and environmental resource in the lives of many British Columbians. Over the last 13 years the outbreak of mountain pine beetle has affected an estimated 18.1 million hectares of forest throughout BC. The effects of the infestation continue to present major challenges to the forest industry and communities in BC’s central interior. The all-party Special Committee on Timber Supply was appointed by the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia to examine and make recommendations to address the loss of mid-term timber supply in the central interior. Specifically, the committee must consider recommendations that could increase timber supply. A discussion paper describing the issue and outlining possible options is available online to inform and focus public input. The committee will be holding a public hearing in Quesnel on Friday, July 6. British Columbians may also participate by sending a written submission, or a video or audio file. The deadline for public input is Friday, July 20, 2012. HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

John Mellencamp took to the stage at the CN Centre with his electric guitar and a setlist full of favorites. Percy N. Hébert photo

Mellencamp r.o.c.k.ed in P.G. DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter John Mellencamp took to the stage at the CN Centre in Prince George, Sunday, in front of a sold out crowd and delighted with a setlist including some of his biggest hits. Playing classics such as Small Town, R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A., Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First) and Jackie Brown, Mellencamp had the crowd on their feet, singing along with every

word. Joined by two guitar players, a bass player, a percussionist, an accordion player and a fiddler, Mellencamp occasionally joined in with a guitar. Mellencamp gave the crowd what they were looking for on a stage lit with a string of lights, which cast a soft glow. Weaving some of his newer songs in with the classics, Mellencamp treated concert-goers with a taste of a new sound - more message-driven. Mellencamp sang songs like the more

recent No One Cares About Me and Walk Tall, a song in which he protest the Bush administration, from his 2004 album Words and Music, John Mellencamp’s Greatest Hits. The band, all suited up, kept up the pace throughout the set and kept the crowd entertained with Mellencamp’s signature allAmerican sound which popularized him in the late 70s and early 80s. The crowd was treated to a stripped down rendition of Jack and Diane,

undoubtedly one of Mellencamp’s biggest hits, as he took the stage alone with an acoustic guitar. A highlight of the concert, Mellencamp encouraged the fans to sing along and sing along they did, chanting word for

word. The Cowboy Junkies warmed the stage for Mellencamp, playing songs from their newest album series, The Nomad Series. Up next at the CN Centre is Mamma Mia Aug. 16, 8 p.m. Obituary Tribute

Tom passed away on June 9th, 2012 at home. He will be lovingly remembered by his children; Roger, Kevin M., Beverly, Sandra, Debbie, Janet, Connie and Kevin S as well as 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Tom was predeceased by first wife Joyce, second wife Rose, and son Bruce. He will be missed by all

It’s been great to have had some quality time in the constituency, and I feel like I’m finally getting caught up on both individual constituent matters and community initiatives. One area that is always an ongoing concern for my office is our road infrastructure, and it’s been a focus for me again these past few weeks. I had a good meeting with Ministry of Transportation (MoT) senior staff to go over the various road projects and initiatives currently underway and planned for the near future. Along with the continuation of more four-laning of sections of Highway 97, there will be significant work undertaken to repair and upgrade a number of secondary and side roads throughout the region. I’m hoping that one of those projects will be the West Fraser Road, which needs significant repairs as soon as possible. The 150 Mile House road project, which is well behind schedule, will continue this summer and is to be completed by the fall. Ministry staff will closely monitor the contractor through the completion of this major project. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) has begun work on the 3100 Road (the Likely-Wells connector road), which was washed out last spring. The road will be closed for about 3-4 weeks for blasting and repairs and should be reopened for the summer tourism traffic. In addition to maintaining and upgrading the road infrastructure we’ve got, I’ve asked both the MoT and FLNRO to look at the resource roads in our region with a view to ensuring that people living in either Quesnel or Williams Lake have easy access to the existing and potential mining opportunities throughout the region, and to ensure we can fully utilize our available timber supply. Investment in the strategic expansion of our road infrastructure is necessary to maximize economic development and job creation opportunities in our region. www.bobsimpsonmla.ca

OPINIONS Right to die With the issue of euthenasia again in the spotlight, I ponder the issue with interest. I’m now entering those twilight years, as they are so euphemistically called and wonder what will be in store for me should I come to a point where euthenasia is my fervant wish. I remember Sue Rodriguez and her empassioned plea from her wheelchair, a prisoner of her disfunctional body. It was the helpless cry of a badly wounded creature, unable to end her miserably painful life. We don’t think twice if our pet is suffering, we take the necessary steps to put them out of their misery. If an animal is fatally injured on the highway, euthenasia is the logical and merciful answer. But we seem to shy away from the issue when it comes to humans. Doctors hide behind their hippocratic oath of not doing harm to their patient but isn’t it more harmful to leave a patient suffering, with no chance of recovery, when they clearly express a desire to die? Will they change their mind in a couple of days? Unlikely if their condition is terminal and the only respite offered is a panacea for the pain. Words of comfort may help but ultimately dying is a lonely journey. I believe those with no possibility of recovery, who sincerely choose to end their life with dignity and in their own time, should be granted the assistance they require. I know certain U.S. states have comprehensive laws allowing euthenasia and they seem to be serving their citizens well. Why can’t we as Canadians accept this is a natural part of society, put the whole Dr. Death behind us and allow terminally ill citizens to handle their death as they see fit. I hope by the time I’m faced with my demise, and should I be terminally ill, that Canadian lawmakers, medical professionals and the collective society has removed the barriers to assisted suicide. -Annie Gallant, Cariboo Observer

Take the high road when driving L

ife can be extinguished in the blink of an eye and I was reminded of that last week while in the truck with my husband and kids on the way out to dinner. We were only four blocks from home when a car suddenly charged straight at us on our side of the road. My husband, Paul managed to swerve to avoid hitting the oncoming vehicle and the woman driving it swerved back into her own lane, went too far, turned back toward the road again and sped away so erratically we weren’t able to get the number of her licence plate before she disappeared. With her barreling through our neighborhood like that, we turned around to follow her, but she was too fast for us to find. En route again, we drove past the location of our close call and noticed how many young families were out walking their dogs and riding their bikes. They too could have fallen prey to her dangerous driving. “Maybe she fell asleep,” I suggested. “She was drunk,” Paul

Lori Welbourne

On A Brighter Note replied. “I could tell.” It seemed too early in the evening for a drinking and driving incident, but unfortunately, this can happen at any time of day. When we arrived safely at the restaurant to meet Grandma and Grandpa Welbourne who were visiting from out of town, the near-accident was all we could initially talk about. “We almost died,” our eight-year-old daughter announced as we sat down. Sounds dramatic, but a head-on collision with a car going that speed could easily result in death. The actions of this unknown driver had me reflecting on my own reckless driving moments, in

“That’s okay,” they replied. Yet it wasn’t okay and I felt rattled for days, beyond grateful that my distracted driving hadn’t caused a tragedy. None of us drive perfectly 100 per cent of the time and most of us have at one point or another had a close call of some kind. We need to remind ourselves that the vehicles we’re driving are made up of thousands of pounds of metal and steel and demand the utmost respect and responsibility to ensure they don’t turn into deadly weapons. Car accidents do happen, but they shouldn’t. By mere definition accidents are preventable. Driving drunk, distracted or drowsy is preventable too. Deciding to do any of these things invites more possibilities to ruin lives and cause death and none of us would ever want that. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. particular one from last fall. I certainly wasn’t drunk, but I was quite clearly distracted. I had been waiting for a green light at an intersection for a long time and I was staring off into space thinking about my to-do list or something like that. I looked over, saw that the light was green and started driving into the intersection when I noticed a big moving truck coming straight at us. I slammed on the brakes and he slammed on his, screeching his tires and swerving to avoid hitting me. Startled, I quickly tried to figure out what happened as the truck driver gestured angrily. He didn’t get out and yell at me like I thought he was going to, he just drove away and I pulled over to the side of the road to stare at the black tire streaks he’d left behind. “I must have looked at the wrong traffic light,” I said to the kids, who were in the back seat. “I’m so sorry. I guess I was in la-la land and not paying attention.”

FEEDBACK

Recess Barkerville’s infamous school teacher takes a break to chat with one of his students. Autumn MacDonald photo

Greeks need to be accountable for actions Editor: Father’s Day... What a great time to thank my dad and mom for teaching, modelling and sometimes forcing on my siblings and myself the values and beliefs that have literally saved our lives and allowed us to enjoy relative security and good health in the latter stages of our lives. A few of these foundation principles include diligence in work, honesty, integrity and thrift – spending less than what you earn so you can save and be generous with those who really need help. For all their generosity with their children and others, they also modelled a great deal of wisdom – where and when to stop.

Letters to the Editor

If they lent us money, they expected us to repay. If they helped a needy person, they expected that person to contribute what they could to their own well-being – even if it was “menial” hard work. By the way, they taught us that cleaning out calf pens and washing dishes was honourable work. Nearly everyone, no matter what their “status” in life, can do this and in a “crisis” there is no shame or disgrace in going back to that with a positive attitude, if you need to. My parents also taught us if we were unhappy with the results of our insane, reckless spending – change your behaviour. Wanting what others had was greed, envy and

jealousy. They taught us that if we wanted anything of value, we needed to work for it, using the talents, skills and abilities that we had developed. For these reasons, I am delighted that our federal government has made it clear that it will not give any Canadian money to bail out the euro zone because some of its profligate members have been recklessly piling up their credit cards – the small country of Greece, to the tune of $750 billion. Why? Apparently some Greek pensions are better than German pensions – people who did the same work! Apparently too, tax evasion is rampant

throughout the Greek economy. And Greeks expect Germans (and the rest of the world, including Canada) to cover their credit card? Preposterous! Our finance minister stated that the euro zone is not impoverished. There are some very well-off countries in that zone. The zone needs to impress on these “rogue states” they cannot expect to be bailed out unless they make some fundamental changes to their reckless behaviour – you must spend less than you earn. If I was a German, I too would be livid over the prospect of being taxed to support a Greek bailout.

Thank you, Tom Mulcair and the NDP for also clarifying your position on this issue. In their view, it is OK to reward jealousy, envy, greed, profligate spending and tax evasion and take from citizens who have worked hard, denied ourselves instant gratification, paid our taxes and contributed to our own pensions and savings so those who have behaved recklessly and irresponsibly can enjoy the same level of prosperity we now enjoy. I applaud Canada’s efforts to help victims of floods, earthquakes and famines, but last I checked, Greeks have food to eat and clothing

to wear. If they want to riot in the streets over cuts to their inflated pensions, let them. As kids, I remember all of us ranting, raving and screaming at our parents too, then we had to do as we were told and sometimes years later realized that what we hated was really for our good. At least a slim majority of Greeks seem to now have elected a government that does not believe it just has to shake the money tree and is committed to necessary austerity. They should have talked to my dad and mom long ago! Jim Sagert Quesnel

COMMUNITY

Canada is an enjoyable challenge JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

Just in from Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Jun Ito committed himself to a huge leap in coming to Quesnel. Having never learned English before, except one week spent studying in Vancouver, Ito has come to be the next volunteer at Shiraoi House. Communication, he says, is a bit of a problem. “I studied one week in Vancouver, so I can’t speak English very well. I study English every night.” This is Jun’s first time out

of his country, so everything is new to him. Though many of those new experiences are difficult, like learning English from scratch, some are more enjoyable. “Quesnel people move slowly, but Japanese people are so busy. I like it.” Before coming to Quesnel, Jun spent his days picking tea in Shizuoka, a prefecture famous for its tea in Japan. He spent his winters, though, snowboarding. And while he has big plans for the winter, right now he is content to pursue another past time. “I like skateboarding and snowboarding, so I go to the

skatepark.” Between skateboarding, his volunteer duties and his language study, Ito has his days stuffed full. And though he hasn’t been in Canada long, he is missing his home a little, or at least the food, which he proclaims is the best. He is, however, looking forward to the winter, by which time he is planning on having a good enough grasp on English to head down to Whistler to work and snowboard. But until then, you’ll see him skating at the park or at Shiraoi House furiously studying English.

F

riday night Quesnel City Council Chambers resounded with tales of corruption, graft and greed! No, we’re not talking 2012, we’re talking 1912 and the construction of British Columbia’s Pacific Great Eastern Railway! Barry Sanford regaled the audience with stories of how the railroad was finally built; along the way it took down two ruling political parties and made many people rich. Naturally, the ones who got rich weren’t the ones who actually worked on the railway, but the politicians. Hence our title, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Sanford was the Heritage speaker and special guest of Quesnel Museum and Archives as we celebrated the “plaquing”(new word) of the BC Rail Station in Quesnel. As you may, or may not, know Quesnel Museum plaques two heritage buildings a year. The Commission’s decision to present two new plaques a year to heritage homes or sites is based on financial considerations. If people wish to

If any one lives in a heritage home and wish to have it plaqued, let us know and bring your cheque book. Back to the story at hand...people were amazed to hear just where the railway ran around Quesnel (Plywood Hill, for one). A slide show showed just where the ‘grades’ were situated. The Cottonwood Bridge was one of the biggest challenges construction engineers faced, although the Cariboo gumbo they encountered often impeded any progress they made. Andy Motherwell was instrumental in making certain this talk and its accompanying walk actually happened. After the talk on Friday night, the speaker invited questions from the audience and plans were made for Saturday’s walk. Saturday, under

Barry Sanford has written several books on the history of the railway in British Columbia. He was the bus supervisor for School District 28 in Quesnel until his retirement several years ago. International Federation of Ageing conference an excellent experience

L

ately I’ve been thinking a lot about old age. Perhaps it’s because I’ve just returned from the 11th International Federation of Ageing conference in Prague, Czech Republic. They had excellent speakers from all over the world and disclosed how they’ve dealt with problems and tried to come up with solutions unique to their communities. We heard extraordinary voices of the Czech Republic. Dr. Alex Kalasky of Brazil told about an age-friendly city movement growing throughout the world. The new IFA president Gangadharan of India explained International Federation of Ageing is now 50 years old. The conference will be held in South Africa 2013 next May. There were inspiring presentations from 44 countries including Canada. The Hon. Alice Wong, Minister for State (Seniors) represented Canada as well as a number of presentations by other Canadians. Just some of the topics discussed were mental health needs of older persons; health promotion and well-being throughout life; housing and the living environment; enabling older people – assistive technology, devices and products; work and the ageing labour force; elder abuse occurrence and detection. R. Keller of the U.S.A. said that the world’s largest provider of elderly housing is the Salvation Army. Upon my return from Europe, the subject of ageing was impacted all the more while I listened to B.C. But the more I think about it the more I am convinced that there may have been more that we could have done when we were younger to help prepare us for our senior years. Quesnel Technics presents: An evening of flips, twirls and amazing feats T

he Quesnel Technics gymnastics team finished their season off well, taking home a treasure chest of medals from Smithers, before coming home to show off for their parents. The Aloha Meet allowed the small gymnasts the chance to show off their growth throughout the year. Peggy Wilcox, the team’s coach, was impressed with her kids in the competition and throughout the year. “I’d like all the recognition to go to my gymnasts. They did incredibly,” she said. From the Gymstart, ages five to

10, all the way up to level two. ages nine to 12, the kids achieved great results. In level two, both Jessica Higgins and Madison Moore excelled. Moore tied for golf in floor, obtained silver on the vault and the bars, and got bronze in the all round. Higgins tied Moore for gold on the floor, took silver on the beam and in all round, and bronze on the vault and the bars. In level one the girls did just as well. Emily Gorder won gold in all round and on bars and got bronze on the bars. Sierra Moore competed for her first time, and

took home two eighth place ribbons for floor and beam. Alyssa Schneider tied for silver on bars and won the level one choreography award. “Her winning smile and genuine love of performing on floor won her the level one choreography award,” Wilcox said. The wrap-up let the kids show off their skills in a more intimate setting, with all the parents there to watch. During the evening Wilcox hoped to show the progression of skills of the gymnasts, she said. Through this the parents were treated to all manner of impressive gymastics.

B.C. Summer Games

Learning teamwork on the trot JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter 'Team' is one word that strives to sum up the spider web of relationships that bind together a group of players in their effort to win. And though we may throw together a couple kids, give them hats, gloves and bats, and call them a team, the requisite mutual understanding and respect that makes a team shine won't be there. For that, it takes a lot of work and time. The challenge of becoming a team has been a difficult one for the regional girl's softball team. They're headed to the B.C. Games this summer, though and need those relationships to shine. Their area, zone 8, covers cities as far south as Williams Lake, north as far as Fort Nelson, west as far as Vanderhoof and east to the Alberta border. To gather all those girls together for any useful amount of time takes a lot of planning and travelling. Christina and Amanda Lawrence are two girls who know the meaning of team work. Not only are the two girls sisters, they're twins that play together, Christina as the

st

back catcher and Amanda as a pitcher. Now, however, they've been thrown together, with two other girls from Quesnel, in a team with girls they've never played with or against. "In the beginning, it was awkward because we didn't know them well," Amanda said. But the one thing that could bring them together as a real team they had a hard time making happen. "We don't get much practice together," Christina said. The team started practicing together in November and while the early beginning was a good idea, the northern winter and the long distances made getting together very difficult. At first, this meant the girls had to be a little more careful with the words that came out of their mouths during games; they had to be polite with their team mates. This could be difficult, Amanda said, when girls make mistakes. Whereas they might yell at girls they know, relying on the relationship to cushion the blow of any words said in the heat of the game, they didn't have that luxury playing with

girls they had just met. Now though, after a little bit more time, they are making progress as a team and as friends, Aiyan Basi, one of the pitchers, said. "We've bonded pretty well." The differences and distances do have their positives, though, Ashley Patterson, one of the youngest girls on the team at age 12, pointed out. Most of these girls have been playing with the same people, the same coaches and the same tactics for most of their lives. This newly merged team gives them the chance to play with people who have their own ways of doing things and to learn new tricks. "I get to learn how to do something different and that makes me stronger," Patterson said. But all the difficulties, the travel and the practices can't dim the light at the end of the tunnel. The girls are going to the B.C. Games and they are excited. "I had friends that went and they said they had the time of their lives," said Basi. So, come July, they will be competing as a team and that, in and of itself, will be a victory.

penter from Prince George. Ida Boschman faced a playoff for first in the senior women's category, but came out on top over Helene Boudreau who finished in second. Elaine Stern, from Abbotsford, and Muriel Scallion, from Kamloops, tied for third. Local Cheyann Newman took the junior girls category, followed by Ameryllis Braun out of Prince George. In senior men's 40-feet local Lloyd Osborne won six games which rocketed him to the top. Steve Moody and Lorenzo Ferrara, out of Quesnel, tied for second. In the senior men's 'B' 30 feet, Maurice and Maurice took the top two place again, with Stern triumphing over Carpenter. Scallon rounded out the top three. Finally, in senior mixed 55+, the two Maurices came out on top again, though in reverse positions, with Carpenter over Stern, who tied for second with Ida Boschman.

The local horseshoe club held the Quesnel open last Saturday and Sunday. Players from all over the province, as far as Abbotsford, and even out-of-province players, came to take part. Cariboo League

Soccer wrap-up JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Cariboo League gather in 100 Mile House to wrap up their season last weekend. Each team played three games in some unfriendly weather, as both thunder storms and heavy rain showers plagued the weekend. The U12 Denny Strikers boys had a mixed bag of a weekend with a win, a loss and a tie. They tied their first game against Williams Lake at 1-1. They lost against their second against Prince George 3-0. Their final game of the weekend they claimed a 1-0 win, once again against Williams Lake. The U12 girls had a harder time of it on the weekend, losing all three of their game despite a strong showing. The girls lost on penalty kicks to the Williams Lake U12 girls, with a full time score of 1-1. Game two was much the same story, except full time ended scoreless. In game three, 100 Mile House managed to beat them in regulation time, just barely squeaking by with a 1-0 win over the Quesnel girls. Despite the rough weekend, the girls played exceptionally well, controlling the ball and keeping it in the opposition’s end, only failing at capitalizing on chances. The U14 girls ended the weekend with a bit of a mixed bag as well. They came out strong, with a 5-0 win over P.G., but then hit a wall in a 1-0 loss against 100 Mile House. In game three, the

girls faced a particularly hard loss on penalty kicks against Williams Lake. The game ended with a 0-0 tie, despite the Denny’s Strikers control of the game. During regular play the Denny’s Striker’s tender was never tested. Unfortunately the girls couldn’t keep up the momentum in the shoot out. The U16 girls came out of the weekend with three more wins. Game one against Williams Lake was won during regular time, with a 1-0. Game two proved to be more difficult, ending in a 0-0 tie. The girls, however, kept pushing and with goaltender Colleen Moorehouse not letting a single ball past, and shooters Kaitlyn Godsoe, Kyra Teetzen and Shayna Sales all managing to find the back of the net, the girls won it on penalty kicks. Game two, against the second Williams Lake team, proved to be an easier win, with a 2-0 making it the third shutout of the weekend fo Moorehouse. The U18 boys had their playdowns in Williams Lake on the weekend. They started off well against Williams Lake, playing them to a 5-0 final in Quesnel’s favour. The Prince George boys, however, were not so easily handled. “We were up 1-0 on them when they tied it 1-1 before half. The game went both ways for quite a while until we had one injured player and a bunch of tired players as we only had two subs for the day. PG ended up scoring later in the second half and kept up the momentum to win 4-1,” Coach Mike Page said.
