KITIMAT - The Conservation Officer Service is suggesting that the June 6th bear attack on a dog in Cablecar could have been avoided. The COS issued a statement following reports last week that a dog was killed by a black bear in the Cablecar area (Sentinel, June 13, 2012). “The interview with the com-
plainant revealed that their reaction might have triggered a predator-prey response by the bear. The bear pursued the horses and dog when they started to run away, the statement, released by conservation officer Dale Kluivers, said. “Had the women taken the necessary precautions ... the bear might have simply turned and disappeared, the release continued. COS did three searches for the dog and bear but officers
could find neither. They did identify that there were several bears in the area, but that meant the chance of catching an innocent bear was high so they decided to remove their trap last Friday (June 8). The COS advised the public that when encountering a bear to remain calm, make yourself seem as big as possible, stay together in a group, and face the bear while walking away slowly. “Never look a bear straight in

the eyes as the bear can interpret this as a sign of aggression, the COS said. “Of course in this incident the individuals involved were on horseback and could not have backed away easily, the COS said. When travelling with a dog, it is advised to keep your pet on a leash, as incidents in the past have involved off-leash pets being chased by bears straight back to their owners.

Field schools explore the unique landscape of our region By Dustin Quezada THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - NWCC Field Schools explore the physical and cultural landscape of our region Over the past decade, Northwest Community College (NWCC) has developed and offered a series of field schools that connects students with the physical and cultural richness that defines the Northwest. The field schools’ unique and hands-on applied study features the spectacular geography and environment of the Northwest, while bringing students into First Nations communities and learning on the land with the local First Nations people. Three major field schools are offered at NWCC’s Terrace Campus—Kitlope, Haida Gwaii, and Stewart/Telegraph. The Kitlope Field School takes place in the largest intact temperature coastal rainforests in the world. A pristine ecosystem, in a land of mountains, fjords, and valleys with rivers of pure clean water fed by thousands of rushing glacial streams, supporting
an old growth rainforest, full of giant trees of sitka spruce and cedar. In this amazing place, students are guided by the Haisla and Henaaksiala people, and learn about the rich cultural history, and the special relationship to their ancestral home. The Haida Gwaii Field School gives students a chance to explore this unique island archipelago on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, and the Haida culture. Students learn about the ancient Haida history and archaeology, Haida life ways, and of the unique island geography and ecology. Students are based in the Skidegate area, but explore other areas like Masset, South Morseby Island, and Mosquito Lake to canoe or kayak and learn about the unique ecology, Haida history, ethnobotany, and the cultural usages of plants. The Stewart/Telegraph Field School successfully blends the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, geography and geology, by demonstrating how each one of these disciplines depends on an understanding and respect of the other.. While in Tele-
graph Creek, students get to learn from the Tahltan, about their territory, and their rich cultural history, including the unique relationship the Tahltan had with the volcanic complex of Mt. Edziza and the obsidian trade from this location. This field school also includes much discussion on contemporary issues facing the Tahltan, including hydro-electric development and mineral and fossil fuel extraction. Sheree Ronaasen, an anthropology instructor at NWCC since 2001 who’s been key to the field studies development, integrating First Nations content, and working actively in collaboratively with First Nations communities, says NWCC’s field schools have proven a very popular option for students who can earn between three and six university credits in two to three weeks of study. “What has proven to really resonate with field school students, in addition to the course content, is they gain an emotional connection to the land and people, said Ronaasen. “This allows students to develop

the land and animals, and have a special relationship to Mother Earth, adds Ronaasen. “To share this wisdom with students has created an educational opportunity that students have reported, as being life transforming.
NWCC nursing student Kim Latimer attended the Stewart/Telegraph field school in 2011 and one of the lasting memories for her was the sharing of knowledge from the Tahltan Elders who participated. “I really enjoyed
hearing the stories the First Nations Elders told, said Latimer. “Theirs is such a unique culture in regards to their traditions and background. Find out more about NWCC Field School dates at nwcc.ca

Rupert port needs to balance its growth bc bcclassified.com .com against responsibilities of broad society flying fish By Alan S. Hale
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT At their annual general meeting on Wednesday evening, the Prince Rupert Port Authority said that they have finally accomplished their goal of turning Prince Rupert into a major shipping hub, but with that comes a whole new set of challenges that the group is still coming to terms with. “I can tell you that 10 years ago this was really easy situation. It was really easy to get our social license because when this community was on its knees financially, the whole focus of what we were doing at the port was on creating economic activity and jobs,” said CEO Don Krusel. “People did not stop me in the street 10 years ago and ask me if we were doing things safely or doing things from an environmental perspective. They were asking me whether or not we were going to be suc-
cessful creating the container terminal.” Now that the port has become as large and enormously successful as it is, says Krusel, the Port Authority are finding themselves having to balance the conflicting demands placed on the port. On one hand, the port must be able to keep developing and expanding because it is a critical part of the economy, not just in Prince Rupert but to all communities whose economic futures depend on the gateway for their goods to get to and from markets. “It’s the people in Tumbler Ridge that are now planning to commit to more coal mines and the many people who want jobs in those mines. It’s the people in Saskatchewan that are looking to be employed in the potash industry. And it’s people in the forestry industry that are looking to capitalize on the marketplace. We as a port authority have a responsibility to facilitate that trade,” said Krusel.
On the other hand, you have the residents of Prince Rupert who have to bear all the annoyances and inconveniences that a rapidly growing port entails. Rupertites have had to put up with train noise that lasts long into the night, they are losing access to parts of the waterfront and Ridley Island and there is increased truck traffic through town. One Dodge Cove resident told Krusel that living across the water from the port is so noisy it’s like living inside a thunderstorm. Krusel says that while they are trying to address issues such as the noise, other issues like access to Ridley and the waterfront may not be easily resolved. This will bring conflicts between the needs of the community and the needs of industry. But he says the Port Authority knows it can’t gain the support of the community – their social license – just by producing jobs anymore. “What I will commit
to you is that we will do our best to balance those conflicting demands, as part of our social license, the best we can. We are going to try to support and facilitate trade for northern British Columbia and for all of Canada to open up this gateway to international markets. But at the same time, we want to ensure that we grow those facilities responsibly, safely and sustainably,” said Krusel. There is no doubt that the port has been doing well. According to the Port Authority’s financial statements they released at Wednesday’s meeting, the net
income for the organization was $7,743,698 in 2011. That’s an increase over the year before of 184 per cent. And while growth at other Canadian ports has effectively flattened out since 2007, Prince Rupert’s continues to climb year- afteryear and is now 81 per cent larger than it was then. The port is also breaking records every year. In 2011 the Port of Prince Rupert saw 19-million tonnes of goods pass through. Krusel says that he believes that the port can expect more record breaking years to come.

Teen raises thousands to help a family in need in Caribbean By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - 18-year old Brianne Bartel has successfully been collecting donations for her Hero Holiday Humanitarian trip, after putting on an information session and hot dog sale. Bartel raised $1,917.88 at the information session she held last week, bringing her total amount of donations to $2,242.88. The hot dog sale that Cathy Horcroft of Dundee Wealth held on Friday to raise funds for her cause raised an additional $1,000 to bring the total to over $3,000 . Despite original plans, Bartel will not be putting this money towards purchasing gifts for the family. Hero Holiday is trying to get people away from giving gifts, as it has become unhealthy in the community for a number of reasons. Instead, Bartel will be purchasing “fun packs”, which in-
clude a number of items including colouring books, crayons, soccer/ basket/baseballs, bubbles, and more. The remainder of donations will be given to the Dominican Republic Emergency Relief Fund, which is used for medical procedures throughout the year, purchasing groceries for those who cannot, and various other things of this nature. Absolute Leadership Development hosts Hero Holiday, where Canadians are given the opportunity to go on global humanitarian trips to either Mexico, Thailand, Haiti or the Dominican Republic. On these trips, people work in a community to either help build homes, distribute supplies, provide food, provide mobile medical clinics or work with children who are at risk. Bartel will leave on June 3, first heading to Toronto for an orientation and to prepare for the trip before heading to So-

Kitimat Health Advocacy Group meets with MLA By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - A special meeting of the Kitimat Health Advocacy Group (KHAG) had members
meeting with area MLA Robin Austin to air their concerns about health services. “What we wanted to do is talk to Robin about our local future as it re-
lated to provincial support,” said KHAG chairperson Rob Goffinet. At centre was a long simmering issue of acute care beds in Kitimat General Hospital being

used for multi-level care purposes. Goffinet said that the use of acute care beds for non-acute purposes is not a crisis, “but you can see it’s overloading.” The health care system is seeing stresses locally, he said, from a larger demographic of people living in Kitimat for retirement rather than moving away. “Other places down south have been dealing with this for years. Kitimat is now entering that shockwave,” he said. Austin recognized
the concerns regarding the beds at the hospital. “The biggest [concern]...[was] around not having sufficient assisted living and long-term care beds,” he told the Sentinel about the meeting with KHAG. “That means seniors are kept in acute care beds way longer than is necessary and clogs up the whole system.” Calling it a waste of resources, he said he continues to lobby ministry officials to have more resources put into the northwest — both in Kitimat and Terrace.
He said recent decisions such as the announcement of a new hospital in Burns Lake is still good news here because it means capital projects move up the list. If land permits, he said he’d like to see Kitimat’s multi-level care facility expanded but also said more housing facilities need to be built as well. “If [retirees are] staying that means we’ve got to change our perspective as to what we deliver in terms of health care and having
ROBIN AUSTIN adequate seniors facilities is the number one priority.”

City formally opposed Bill C-38 By Alan S. Hale THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The City of Prince Rupert has essentially declared its opposition to Bill C-38; the highly controversial 400-page omnibus bill that is expected to pass in the House of Commons in the next few days. City council voted at their meeting on Monday to send a letter to the Federal Government asking them to remove all non-fiscal items from what is technically a budget implementation bill. Doing so is tantamount to asking to scrapping the bill entirely since C-38 is stuffed full of changes to many federal laws and programs that can have little to do with the country’s finances. There are measures in the bill that will affect Prince Rupert as well. The bill will be making changes to employment insurance that have been criticized as being bad for seasonal workers – of which Prince Rupert has many. A few weeks ago, Irvin Figg from the Canadian Fisherman and Allied Worker’s Union went to council to ask for them to help oppose the cancellation of EI pilot programs by C-38 which would result in seasonal workers getting smaller claims in the off-season. The motion to send the opposition letter was made by councillor Jennifer Rice whose day-job
is working for the T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation, which has criticized C-38’s changes to the Fisheries Act. These changes include a rolling back of fish habitat protections. They say that those protections are important to the commercial and recreational fisheries because they ensure that fish have a place to spawn and replenish their stocks. Bill C-38 also includes the changes to the Environmental Assessment system for big industrial projects, and the provision that give’s the federal cabinet final say over decisions made by the National Energy Board. This change has lead to a considerable loss of confidence in the Enbridge Joint Review Panel hearings by local Northern Gateway opponents, who, at the last hearing in Prince Rupert, repeatedly accused the panel of being stripped of credibility and authority. But the councillors who voted in favour of the motion to oppose the bill say it’s not because of any of its content, the issue is the “anti-democratic” way that measures are being pushed through. “Can you imagine, your worship, if we decided to roll into our budget package a curfew decision on how late children can stay out at night? Or roll into our budget a decision to let people hunt wolves with bows and arrows on Kaien island? That’s the kind of thing
they’ve done and it’s absolutely criminal,” says Councillor Joy Thorkelson. “It’s a fundamental attack on our democratic process as far as I’m concerned. It’s an attempt to circumvent the dialogue that’s needed on important issues by rolling them into a budget and saying ‘well, too bad. We’re the one’s in charge, we can do whatever we want because we’re going to vote on whatever we want.’ They’re making policy decisions removed from the need to discuss them,” says Councillor Anna Ashley. Not every councillor agreed, although none of them argued against what was said about C-38 at the meeting. When it came to a vote, Councillor’s Jennifer Rice, Joy Thorkelson and Anna Ashley voted in favour. Councillor Nelson Kinney was the only one to vote against. Gina Garon abstained saying that she had not been prepared to deal with the issue so suddenly. Councillor Judy Carlick-Pearson was not at the meeting. Mayor, Jack Mussallem, urged the council to get more information before making a decision. MPs started their marathon voting session on Wednesday afternoon, where they will have to go through several hundred amendments to the bill proposed by the Opposition parties to stall it, or at least make passing the bill as painful as possible.

The Stewart Minerals North committee has also provided $10,000 to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation through the Mining for Miracles charity which is supported by the provincial mining and exploration industry and the hospital. “We’ve had children from Stewart who unfortunately have needed the services of the [children’s] hospital so this is most appropriate,” said Danuser. Donations from surpluses have become a tradition with the Minerals North conference.

WEEKLY SUDOKU
STEWART - Students at Bear Valley School in Stewart will have a chance to visit a historic mining town thanks to a mining conference held in their hometown last year. Minerals North 2011 generated enough of a surplus so that $10,000 is to be provided for a field trip to visit Barkerville in the Cariboo, announced conference cochair Angela Danuser. “The school plans a trip every few years and it’s been a few years since the last one. So this is a good opportunity to become involved,” she said. Visiting Barkerville is a perfect fit for an activity to come out of Minerals North, an annual regional mining conference held in a different location each year, because it incorporates a mining theme, Danuser continued. “It definitely has an education component and when we ran it past the Mineral North head committee, they thought it was a fabulous idea,” she said.
There are nearly 70 students this year from kindergarten to Grade 12 at the school. “Our hope is that as many students as possible will be able to go,” said Danuser. She said the money will go a long way to defraying the expense of travelling from the small community to the Cariboo. But when that trip can actually take place is not yet known because of the ongoing teachers’ contract dispute with the provincial government. Teachers aren’t taking part in extra curricular activities, for example.

Where Quality Makes The Difference
“I’m really looking forward to key members of our Opposition caucus meeting with people who are directly affected by Enbridge,” Cullen said. “Having taken part in dozens of Enbridge rallies and meetings over the years, I know there will be many very powerful moments. It’ll be pretty up front and personal. “Megan and our caucus are here to stand in solidarity with residents of the Northwest in opposing a dangerous project that brings us so many risks and really only benefits Enbridge shareholders.” Details of the federal Opposition tour to BC and the Northwest are available at www.nathancullen.com.

through and we’re not going to let that happen.” The Opposition’s Enbridge tour begins June 25 with events and a public forum in Vancouver. Leslie and Cullen will then lead a smaller delegation to join Haisla Chief Councillor Ellis Ross and witness community hearings in Kitimaat Village, meet with First Nations and municipal leaders of several area communities, and tour a portion of the proposed marine route that oil supertankers would take to transport raw bitumen to Asia from Kitimat. The local public forum takes place Tuesday, June 26 at the Best Western Inn in Terrace beginning at 6:30 pm. The event is free and everyone is welcome.

Changes made to income assistance By Tom Fletcher THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
VICTORIA - The B.C. government is extending the mandatory job search for new income assistance applicants from three to five weeks, and increasing the amount of earned income people can keep without losing part of their welfare payments. Premier Christy Clark and Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux announced a list of reforms to the income assistance program Monday. Employable social assistance recipients will now be able to earn up to $200 per month without losing benefits, and recipients will be required to file income tax returns. Cadieux said B.C. was the only province
that deducted all the earned income from employable people. The $200 exemption will allow them to develop skills and take advantage of temporary work that becomes available, she said. People receiving disability benefits will now be able to retain up to $800 a month, up from $500. The exempted earnings can also be calculated as $9,600 a year, to allow disabled people to work more during times when their health allows it. Families on income assistance will get an increased school startup supplement before each school year, up from $84 to $100 for each child aged five to 11, and an increase from $116 to $175 for children 12 and over who are returning

Premier Christy Clark and Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux to school. Clark said the total cost to taxpayers for enhanced benefits will be about $5 million per year. The government is also easing restrictions on assets people can keep while collecting income assistance. A single person can have up to $2,000, including cash, while families are allowed to have up to
$4,000 in assets. Disability assistance recipients can have up to $5,000 worth of assets for individuals and $10,000 for couples and families. Schools getting energy efficiency money By Staff Reporter THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
VANCOUVER - School districts throughout B.C. are receiving their share of $5 million as part of ongoing funding to support their energy efficiency upgrades, Environment Minister Terry Lake and Education Minister George Abbott
announced as they released the first of government’s carbon neutral capital program (CNCP) cheques. “Last year we celebrated becoming the first carbon neutral government in North America,” said Lake. “This year, guided by extensive consultation, we’re ensuring schools get new money tied to their emis-
sion and energy reduction efforts and in doing so solidifying our leadership while inspiring the climate action leaders of tomorrow.” Of the $5 million, $4.7 million will be distributed to identified school districts that have not received funding from previous provincial government energy efficiency capital pro-

A further $300,000 will be allocated to 41 school districts for technical expertise that can assist in identifying potential upgrade projects for future years of the CNCP (see link in ‘Learn More’ for full details). All school districts will be able to apply for funding for projects that will help them reduce emissions and save energy costs.
HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

Rain cancels weekend drag races By Ed Evans THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - The weather gods were not good last weekend, as the second of four races at the Terrace regional airport was canceled, both days, due to rain. Unfortunately you cannot run a Drag Race on a slippery track. There is no such thing as rain slicks in Drag Racing. With racers showing up from Haida Gwaii to Houston to run down the track there was much dissapointment in the air. The
ones who were the most dissapointed was the organizers and volunteers who worked hard to set up the race track and then had to take it down after. This hard work involves more than you might imagine with log barriers, portable toilets, tower placement, sign placement, even down to placing the giant white x’s on the runway so it is noticed from the air that it is not an active runway. This doesn’t even include setting up the actual track and timing equipment. A big Thank You from all of the racers goes out to this hard working group. If not
for them, we wouldn’t get to race at all. The weekend wasn’t a total loss for motorheads as the annual Fathers day show and shine was not cancelled and the weather held out enough on Sunday to bring out all of the nice rides. There were even a few new cars at the Canadian Tire parking lot. Next Up: The 4th Annual Kitimat memorial Hill Climb on Saturday June 30th. This venrible race has been around since the 70’s in one form or another and is always a great show to take in.

Our commitment to jobs remains. You’ve heard it before. And we stand by it. Rio Tinto Alcan in BC is committed to employing about 1,000 people once the new modernized smelter is complete. With an aging workforce and retirements happening at an increasing rate, we’ll get to that number through attrition and may even need to hire. That’s what the Kitimat Modernization Project is all about. We are committed to securing the aluminium industry - and jobs in northern BC for decades to come.

College grad comes to the aid of a stranded bus carrying group on NWCC-sponsored tour By Dustin Quezada THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
NEW AIYANSH - Northwest Community College (NWCC) graduate will really come in handy. That’s exactly what happened to a group of visitors to the Nass Valley from NWCC for the recent Challenging the Paradigm 2012 gathering. The group took in an enriching day trip to the valley and the recently opened Nisga’a Museum in Laxgalts’ap but bus problems threatened to tarnish the day and delay the group’s return for a conference-ending dinner and cultural dance presentation. Enter Helmer Grandison, owner/operator of Diversified Automotive & Towing since 2000 and a 1979 NWCC grad in Automotive pre-apprenticeship, now known as Automotive Service Technician Foundations.\ And as the name of his company suggests, through years of hands-on experience and further training, he has become a skilled journeyman mechanic. When the bus could not be started, it was Grandison that NWCC turned to. “I had to check
out the electrical system on the bus,” he said. “I’m quite familiar with this kind of bus, the engine and electrical system.” He also readjusted the rear air brakes and in short order, Grandison had the bus running again, a small but significant payback of sorts for the role NWCC played in his life. “It was the first time I was away from home (New Aiyansh),” said Grandison of his experience at the Terrace Campus some three decades ago. “It was great, it was very fulfilling and I met a lot of new friends. It was an experience.” After graduating, Grandison would spend the next 20 years working in the Nass Valley and in Prince Rupert gaining the experience he would need to go out on his own. And along the way, he’s come back to NWCC too. The biggest change in auto mechanics since 1979 is the growth of computer systems in cars and Grandison has come back to NWCC to upgrade his computer analysis skills. He also returned to earn his air brake ticket and enrolled in a computer class to get some of the
basic non-mechanic skills he’d need in his business. Grandison says there are very few mechanics in the Nass Valley and probably only one other one—his brother—who has the expertise the visiting NWCC group required that day. He says the call was a surprise to him but it’s all in a day’s work for a mechanic living in the Nass Valley. “In my normal day, I get calls late at night and early in the morning,” said Grandison. “That’s why I call myself Diversified (Automotive & Towing).” Thanks is also owed to others who helped that day — Earl Munroe, Director of Maintenance at New Aiyansh Village Government, and Leonard Moore and Graham Mackenzie. NWCC is a valuable community asset impacting the lives of students and our communities. Through its nine campuses, 500-plus employees and an annual injection of more than $30 million in the local economy, NWCC is an economic engine supporting the many communities that look to us to provide innovative programs and services.

January 29, 1945 - June 15, 2011
Time speeds on, one year has passed since death its gloom, its shadow cast, within our home, where all seemed bright, and took from us a shining light. We miss that light, and ever will, his vacant place there is none to fill. Down here often speaking your name, we mourn, but not in vain, for up in Heaven we will meet again.
Sadly missed by your family & friends.

In Memoriam
Ronald (Ron) James Power December 1, 1947 - June 12, 2012
With deep regret I advise the passing of my brother Ron Power on June 12, 2012, at the Hospice House in Kamloops, BC. Ron was a quiet, kind and generous man recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. After moving to BC from Ontario in 1969 he lived in Prince George where he worked many years for Northwood Pulp. In 1987 he left to spend five years with Mercy Ships, an international charitable organization of hospital ships, where he donated his time helping onboard and also seeing the world. He cherished that time and met and made many good friends. He always sent letters and cards home of his adventures. The past 17 years he made his home in Kitimat, BC working for Alcan. He joined the Kitimat Pentecostal Assembly church and made good friends with Pastor Ken and good friends who were his regular golf buddies. Ron always made visits to Prince George to visit family & friends and never missed out on a good home cooked meal. He loved to visit his two nieces and loved his daughter Leanne immensely as well as his two beautiful grandchildren Maggie & Scott who he hoped to visit more often once he relocated to Kamloops. Ron came to Kamloops on April 17 for treatment and he never gave up hope that he might ‘get his miracle’ and be able to live his dream of retiring this summer, moving to Kamloops and living in his brand new condo at the Sun Rivers golf course. He will be hugely missed by his sister Colleen (Power) Stromgren, her husband, Rand, and their children Jennifer (Jordan, kids Brooklyn & Layla) and Maureen; his daughter Leanne (McKinley) Danroth (Alan) and grandchildren Maggie and Scott; and his dear friends Ken Cook & John Carrita. Ron was predeceased by his parents Dan Power in 1983 and Anne (Calnan) Power in 1986. A celebration of Ron’s life was held June 21st, 2012 in Kitimat at 7 pm at Ron’s Church in Kitimat.

Wave Riders ride their way to victory By Submitted THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - On June 2, the Haisla Nation Council held the Haisla Days Canoe Race in Kitamaat Village. Four teams accepted the invitation and competed in the 36-foot Haisla ocean-going canoes. The KMP Wave Riders (Bechtel) was crowned the 2012 Haisla Days Canoe Races champion. The canoe racers had to paddle a distance of 1km to the finish line where a crowd of spectators came to encourage their favourite team. For the first race, the Wave Riders led by Sarina Germuth finished in front of team Sasims We-Gwa-Daulth led by Cassidy Bolton. On the second race the experienced Northern Spirit team led by Cheryl Rumley won the race over team Pride & Dignity (Haisla youth paddling team.) On the final race, the Wave Riders showed their determination and focus with a strong start and managed to maintain their lead all the way to the finish line in front of Northern Spirit. Third place went to team Sasims WeGwa-Daulth who won by less than a foot. The canoe race is an activity that takes place during the Haisla Days. The Haisla Canoe Race is part of a long tradition. Back in earlier days, each clan would build a special canoe designed for racing. The competition is still fierce today. It has become an honour to participate in this race and even more of an honour to win the race. With the event the organization committee was able to raise $500 to support the Haisla Youth Paddling program. The winning team will have their name displayed on a banner that will hang at the Haisla Recreation Centre. The Haisla Days organizers would like to thank the volunteers for making this event a success.

The KMP Wave Riders, a team of Bechtel, won the canoe race in Kitamaat Village’s Haisla Days Canoe Race. The event raised $500 to support the Haisla Youth Paddle program.
