The popular mountain race and performances by Bert Davis, the Coppertown Clown, and Dog Show will also be part of every rodeo performance. The Stampede directors will be presented during the Sunday performance. This year’s valued
Stampede volunteers are Sherry and John Bullock. Sunday is also Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day to show support for women’s cancer research. Monday is also a family performance where children get in for free. There are all sorts of fun activities taking place in the Stampede Grounds and around the city during Stampede Weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings there will be entertainment in the Let ‘R Buck Saloon behind the Grandstand with the band Savage West. Saturday night’s Stampede Barn Dance headliners Appaloosa will join Savage West on Friday night and again on Sunday night.

The events include ranch challenges at 3 p.m. Friday, and at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There will be lots of western apparel and crafts available in the Bronc Buster Trade Fair behind the grandstands and no shortage of opportunities to eat on the run with Rotary Club breakfasts and dinners, Knights of Columbus pancake breakfasts and the Stampede concession open all weekend. And, of course, Stampede weekend wouldn’t be complete without the Stampede Parade on Saturday and Canada Day celebrations in Boitanio Park on Sunday. Music, dance, magic and fun for Canada Day Canada Day celebrations in Boitanio Park this year will be filled with family fun in the afternoon and rock and roll in the evening, says event spokesperson Beth Holden. She says Canada Day will be presented by the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society, City of Williams Lake and the
Cariboo Regional District, with help from a number of community sponsors. The celebrations kick off at 2 p.m. with a blessing from T’exelc Williams Lake Indian Band and a welcome by city and CRD representatives. It will be a day of music, dance, magic and fun.
Daytime musical performances include Signal Point Drummers, Quintet Plus, the Williams Lake Community Band and the Sugar Cane Hand Drummers. While people enjoy these performances the Magical Jesaja will wander through the crowd dazzling all with his magical moves and
the talented Al-Lisa will paint the faces of young and old alike. “We are also happy to welcome the Little Chiefs Elementary School, which offers information about their school, stickers and pens, and a taste of homemade bannock and jam while local nurses will be testing blood pressure and
handing out water. “The Grade 9-10 art students from Williams Lake Secondary School will be helping children create a collaborative painting that celebrates Canada Day in the Cariboo and, of course, we will have the traditional giant Canada Day Cake being served by Mayor Kerry Cook, members
of the CRD and board members of the CCACS and Stampede Royalty.” From 5 to 6 p.m. the sweet voices of Angel Keys Children’s Choir will fill the air. Then pull out your dancing shoes and get ready to rock and roll with Williams Lake’s own Rossetta Paxton, Randy Pokeda, Pat Myre
and Mark Lees in their band called Hwy 97. Their original tunes include influences from traditional bluegrass, classic country, old time fiddle and classic rock. This four-person band has talent, rhythm and energy to spare, Holden says. “It is an evening not to be missed.”
GROW valedictorian speaks to grad class 2012 Arlene Antrim GROW/Skyline valedictorian Good evening ladies and gentleman, friends and family, teachers and administrators. We stand gathered together to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2012 class of Skyline. We stand poised at the very edge of graduation. We began high school as children, but we’re leaving as adults. We’ve completed a basic education that will serve as a platform we use to launch ourselves into our futures. Some of us will go
on to university; others will go straight into the workforce. … No matter where we go or what we do, there are challenges ahead of us. What I’m asking from each of you, and from myself, is to meet those challenges straight on with your head held high and your heart wide open. We may not have the power to inspire the entire world to strive for success, but we do have the power to try to achieve it for ourselves. We have worked hard to get to this point, but we didn’t do it by ourselves. We owe
Arlene Antrim a huge debt of gratitude to the following people. To our parents and guardians, thank you for supporting us in more ways than it’s possible to count. You commiserated over our

daily dramas, but you tried to give us enough space to learn how to work things out for ourselves. As a parent, you supported us even through the bad times; you did great at making us succeed in life. These are just a few of the thousands of things that you have done for us to support our journey. Thank you. And also a big thanks to our teachers, principal, and office staff. Thank you for unselfishly sharing your time and knowledge with us. Yes, we know it was your job to do it, but what you did
for us went beyond the call of duty. You took the time to explain assignments, sometimes repeatedly because we weren’t paying attention. You put in the effort to make lessons more interesting so we wouldn’t tune out. You demanded excellence from us whether or not we wanted to give it. You set the bar high and challenged us to live up to it. We are very grateful for everything you have done for us. So as you can see, behind each graduate there have been many people providing sup-
port in more than a dozen ways. The best we graduates can show our gratitude is to make the most of the opportunity we’ve been given, and to forward it into the world with the intention of making it a better place for the generations that follow us. We’ll pay the debt of gratitude forward. From what I have learned and I now know I will teach my loved one. Three years ago, my life took a turn that changed my life for the better. I was given a gift. I had no idea that this
gift would complete my entire life until the day I received it. I was given a beautiful baby boy July 3, 2009 named Brysin Caden. The first time I saw your face, I felt flooded by sun rays that day. I knew from that day it would be all about you. I’m so proud of how you’ve grown, and in ways you’ve made me grow, showing me what motherhood and life is really about. When Brysin got older, I knew it was getting close for me to put myself back on track. See GROW, Page A4
AN APPLE A DAY... Pharmacists put auxiliary labels on prescription bottles to highlight something important about the drug within. At this time of year, you may see a label that says to avoid overexposure to the sun. It’s important to heed this warning. You can be more susceptible to sunburn due to the drug causing photosensitivity reactions. When you are choosing a sun screen product, look for the ones labeled broad spectrum and have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. This will better protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Also remember to put enough lotion on the skin. To ensure you get the full benefit from your sunscreen, you need to apply at least 1 oz. Many people apply much less and the SPF rating of 15 can actually be much less. To allow the sunscreen ingredients to bind to the skin, apply at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. Many people take fish oil capsules daily for better heart health. They take them for their omega-3 fatty acid content. One of the side effects for some people is a fishy aftertaste. This can be avoided by storing the capsules in the freezer. It won’t affect their action but will eliminate that fishiness afterwards. Now, more than ever, pharmacists can work with you and your doctor to make sure you’re as healthy as you can be. Talk to your pharmacist today.

GROW valedictorian treasures son Continued from A3 I knew my son deserved the world and I know I will fight my way through everything so I can give it to him. I registered for school here at Skyline, so I, as a mother, could give the brightest future I knew my little one deserved. Finishing school was not an easy task. Skyline helped me work around my schedule, because
my schedule was hectic, but I managed to meet the requirements that needed to be completed for myself and my son’s well being. I am now on the right path to a successful life to give to him. Post secondary will help me to meet my and Brysin’s goals to continue our journey. It was never easy to get as far as I got, but
my plan is to go even farther. So I have recognized that for many of us it has been difficult to keep up with our studies, but our perseverance has enabled us to overcome many obstacles that led to this night and it will be our resilience that will keep us from ever failing in our future. Believe me, never let anyone or anything stop
you from accomplishing your goals. Stay confident and remember there will always be an opportunity if you seek it. On the behalf of Skyline Class of 2012, I congratulate you all on your accomplishments and I hope you have the best of luck with your future ventures, may it be right after graduation or in another four short years. And in time ‌. we
will be ‌ the economists that make sure we never go through a recession ... the scientist that will find alternative energy sources and ‌ the educators that will train the next group of leaders. Whichever path we choose, we will forever share a common bond of being the graduating class of Skyline 2012. Thank You!

During a news broadcast I heard a story of a town in the USA that had called for a antiswearing by law which was passed by quite a majority. This town has had a similar law in its books for many years but it just was not enforced. It seemed that the language heard down town was getting more and more offensive. The younger generation so it is reported were the main culprits of using questionable language. The law passed, gave the police the power to fine $20.00 per offense. Some of the issues brought forth were; what is offensive, who decides, is it constitutional, does it interfere with the first amendment? One reporter wrote an article in support; not of the law itself, but of the idea. He had noticed over the years that offensive language was on the rise and he wondered who was to blame. We have only ourselves to blame, as the older generation is the example for the younger one. It truly marks how far we have fallen in our

WLSS valedictorian speaks to peers Sam Tudor WLSS Valedictorian There are a number of things I thought of doing in an attempt to impress you for this speech. I was full of delusions of majestic quotes about stars and interpretive dances and such. But I’ve found as I get older that usually the most effective way to say what you mean is simply to say it. This is easier said then done. I realized, when trying this strategy, that I use the “F” word a lot: feelings. I also began to realize that what I wanted to get across was one of those emotional bundles that can never really be expressed with words, at least not without sounding overused and cliché. I hope you know what I’m talking about. It’s like when all the little things that happened to you in the last five years click together for a second, and you think you really know how something
Sam Tudor feels. It’s like colour or music. It’s beautiful, but that type of idea never works well in words. So naturally, I tried to put it into words. I have, in the past, stood and spoken on behalf of a group of people. Never in my life have I been so proud to do so, and never in my life have I been able to sincerely mean every single word the way I do today. It is truly an honour. We are, collectively, the graduating class of 2012. I think in a way we
all must have been part of some twisted scientific experiment. Someone decided to put 114 students about the same age, all very different and distinct, in a dome with fluorescent lighting and watch the species interact. If that is true then I hope the scientists are watching closely because I think they could obtain some valuable information. It’s a fascinating thing, if you think about it, how all of us can be compacted together during some of the greatest turning points in our lives, and all our classes and books and homework and parties and music and dancing all get compressed into this one sort of identity.
The other thing that’s beautiful about it is that only we know. I used to complain about how people don’t understand teenagers. They only remembered their life at our age and projected it onto us. They didn’t realize that sleeping on a friend’s couch meant something different to us than it did to them. But now I understand, and I like it. I like that no one will ever know exactly what it felt like for us. Only we will. When we all spread out like a spider web in different directions, that’ll be the thing we all keep among us. Those five years where we were all a collective group. I like that.

In Grade 8, at our first assembly, the teachers made this massive sweeping statement that was something along the lines of, “You guys are one of the best years we’ve had. There’s an amazing talented bunch of kids in this group.” That feels like a long time ago now, but I remember how much it terrified me. My new Grade 8 mind suddenly thought: “Oh my goodness, I’m in a grade full of brilliant, prodigal angels. Someone must have put me in the wrong year!” Luckily the teachers were wrong. Only joking.

HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: you must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.

WLSS valedictorian praises the puzzle of life Continued from A5 In fact, everyone who said that hit the nail exactly on the head, although I think it’s taken us as a grad class five years to realize exactly what that means, to figure out what our definition of brilliance is. In my eyes, in our eyes, that gives it more value. It’s taken five years of sitting in the commons, talking, and playing music. It’s taken five years of being nervous for some things while striding boldly forward into others. It’s taken five years of the strange experiment but now I finally get it. The little scraps of pictures we gather since day one off the bus have now morphed into one giant colourful portrait, and when people say, “Oh yeah, great group of kids,” I can smile and nod knowingly. I still can’t explain it. I’ve never had to explain it before. Everyone sitting be-
hind me knows what this strange colourful idea is. We all showed it to each other. What this idea is, is 114 different personalities. That’s all it is. Who could have thought it would be such a work of art. So now it’s done. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a last goodbye. Perhaps not to each other, perhaps not to the community we grew up in. As I said, we have things that are only ours. But as of today we move from being the high school students of Williams Lake secondary to the past high school students of Williams Lake secondary. We will never have this again. Everyone does it, everyone graduates, and I’ve always wondered what’s the big deal. But we’ve put so much emotion into the last five years it’s hard to just watch it move into the distance. It’s a strange feeling. I

looked up “wistful” in the dictionary and one of the many definitions was “a fleeting sadness for times gone by.” Which is closer, but not quite right because it’s also a time of joy and celebration. The world is changing, more then ever; there’s no doubt about that in my mind. It’s a stereotype, but when you look around you realize we really do have it now, in our hands, the chance to shape a planet we want to see. Generations keep coming, kids keep growing up, and we are only a small part of things, yes, but it would be nice to hand something down to children and grandchildren and say here, here’s the world we’ve created. We’ve done all we can, now run with it. Good luck. When we do that, I hope we will be proud of what we have given. People have said that our generation has nothing to get behind. It’s kind of true, I
guess. The ‘60s had flower power and hallucinogenic drugs, the ‘70s had nuclear warfare, the ‘80s had Pac-Man, but we have … everything. We can become whatever we want. That’s important. I don’t really know what else to say now but thank you. It is true that every person is like a puzzle, and it’s important to recognize those who give us pieces on our way to a full picture. Every teacher, counsellor, principal, vice principal, janitor … has been so important to us. Whatever your political opinion lately, anyone who has to deal with someone who isn’t genetically related to them for seven hours a day and still manages to show them new things with excitement deserves more then they get now. Something is working at Williams Lake, and if any of those young children approaching high school get anything near to the experience we had

WLSS students wished good luck Grace Baptist Continued from A6 It’s nice to have teachers you can also call friends. To our parents, if you don’t already know how important you are and how much we love you, then we’ll let you know when we come back to live in the basement in 10 years. Just kidding. To all the graduating class of 2012, I love you guys, will really miss you, and will not forget you.
I’m not sure any of us could have predicted the amount of support and excitement one group of kids could create. Even up until the last few weeks, our friends would keep stepping forward with new talents and ideas, new songs to sing. I know the reason we’ve been able to have such an interesting and close-knit grad class is because we would never hesitate to make room

for who each individual was. We really have been like one big family. One big family that dates each other. The other thing I thought of doing in this speech is saying something like “Now we take on the world” or some-
thing else inspiring. But I wanted to stay honest and accurate, so I calculated the odds. There’s 114 of us and seven billion of them, so that makes 60,000,000 of them for every one of us. And I think, in a brawl, the odds aren’t actually
that bad. So there. We graduated. Now, time is wasting. Forward march towards whatever makes you happy. Find it and go do it. Good luck, and so long for now.

Choosing work instead of welfare T
he B.C. government has taken some modest steps to tighten up the province’s income assistance system, and to encourage people to work when they are able to. With Premier Christy Clark swooping in to take credit, Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux unveiled changes that included fixing the worst mistake in B.C. Liberal policy. Cadieux acknowledged that B.C. was the only province that clawed back all earnings from employable welfare recipients, and she announced that from now on they will be able to earn up to $200 a month without penalty. The exemption for disabled people is increased from $500 to $800 a month. Another important change is requiring welfare recipients to file income tax returns. People can now do temporary work when it comes along, report the income and take advantage of the various tax credits that come from participating in society instead of just living off it. Any experience earning money is valuable experience. With baby boomers starting to retire in big numbers, the expected labour shortage has begun across Western Canada. And yet increasing numbers of foreign workers are coming in to do farm and other work, while many young people are unemployed.
B.C. VIEWS TOM FLETCHER
Finance Minister Kevin Falcon took note of this during his budget preparations. Increasing numbers of young, employable people were applying for welfare in southern B.C., while jobs go begging in the booming northeast. Falcon mused about setting up a program to provide training and plane fare for these people, an idea quickly dubbed “welfare air.” Another effort to get young people working is Jobfest, a rock-themed road show currently touring northern B.C. towns. It attracts young people with music and souvenirs like drumsticks and guitar picks, and offers them skills assessment using sexy iPad apps and graphics that depict carpentry as cool. If Jobfest and welfare air sound a bit desperate, it’s because they are. They illustrate our society’s problem. We have a public school system where students pass whether they do the work or not. The culture assumes
self-esteem is more important than achievement. The teachers’ union constantly sets an example that the way to get what you want is to stamp your feet and demand it from government. What do we expect young people to learn? And how easy is it for B.C. to slip into a Greece-like tailspin, where a majority expects to be carried on the backs of the shrinking minority who do productive work? Old-timers might recall
when Mike Harcourt’s NDP government took over from the allegedly miserly Social Credit regime and raised welfare rates. They compounded that mistake by relaxing eligibility rules and making it easier for employable people to stay on welfare. After a couple of years of this wealth redistribution, 10 per cent of the B.C. population was on welfare, with more piling on every day. Faced with the results of
this staggering blunder, Harcourt lashed out at “cheats, deadbeats and varmints” scamming B.C. taxpayers and launched a crackdown on fraud. Later the NDP cut the basic rate for single employables to $500 a month. Today it stands at $610, and the NDP looks poised to repeat history. Surrey MLA Jagrup Brar did a month-long publicity stunt in January, living on welfare by wandering from shelter to food bank
with TV cameras trailing behind. Brar would have been better off if welfare air had been available. Instead of learning to live off the burgeoning urban handout industry, he could have gone up to Dawson Creek or Fort St. John and worked as a labourer. Columneetza valedictorian address Ryan Jensen Columneetza Valedictorian Good morning grad class of 2012! To begin, for those of you who may not know me, my name is Ryan Jensen. Secondly, I’d like to thank everybody that voted for me. I’m really, really excited to be your valedictorian. I’m proud of us all, we did it! Thirteen years of school is done with. I wasn’t sure how many people would be here at the ceremonies this morning, but I am glad there are so many — this will work well. What I want to do is to give our grad class a giant round of applause that starts on
this side of the arena and spreads across as I move my hand until we have a thunderous roar! During my five years at Columneetza, I’ve grown a lot — we’ve all grown a lot. I’ve seen every one of you grow somehow as a person and it’s amazing to see how we’ve all come together now. In some way or another everyone on this stage has impacted your life, showed or said something to you that stuck, and that’s what molds us. All these different experiences with different relationships define who we are in the moment. When I first came

Columneetza teachers heroes Continued from A12 You all know how you’ve grown personally and believe me, this is just the start. There’s so much more out there than we think. When we head out into the “real world” to experience life, there will be times when we really miss this place ... whether you’ll admit it or not. I know there are some of you that are like “nu-uh, nope, not gonna miss this place” — but you will. It might not be tomorrow, it might not be next year ... it might not be for 10 years, but a time will come when you’ve had a long day at work with the boss breathing down your neck; you get home and seem to be doing the homework all over again but for your kids this time, and then have to fight to get them to go to sleep, you’ll drop down on your couch and think to yourself:
Ryan Jensen “What I wouldn’t give to go back to high school for just a day, back when my biggest worries were those few homework questions and planning what we were going to do on the weekend.” One thing that I know I’m really going to miss is all the people who kept this school going. I know it’s been a hard and misunderstood year with the strike and teacher job action and all, but I’ve seen how
Christ Centered Family Focused Sunday 10:00 AM & 1:00 PM* Wednesday 7:00 PM
hard the teachers have worked and I want to recognize that. You really are heroes. Everybody here, everybody, has had that teacher or staff member who has gone the extra mile for them, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. They knew that by doing so it would make your life so much easier. Without many of them, this high school experience would have been pretty bland. I’m also going to miss our eight-minute Timmy’s runs; we had that down to an art. To say I’m a Tim Horton’s addict would be an understatement, I swear the day I leave this town our Tim Horton’s will stop making enough money to operate. I’m also going to miss using that entire stairwell as a sitting area and all the ridicu-
lous things we did at lunch to entertain ourselves. I can tell you one thing that the teachers are not going to miss — the fact that 50 grads had a spare in A block. But there are some things that I’ll look back on and definitely will not miss, number 1 being our parking lot! As soon as the bell rings at 3:13 p.m. it looks like someone just kicked an ant hill; there’s a frenzy of kids going every which way! If you don’t make it out of there in the first five minutes you’re forever stuck in that line of traffic. If you’re stuck in that traffic behind Nico I wish you the best of luck because he likes to back into you saying, “I didn’t think you were that close.” See, COLUMNEETZA, Page A16

Columneetza entrance stairs tricky Continued from A15 Nico, the mirror says “Objects are closer than they appear.” My number two least missed would be those stairs going down to the entrance of our school. No matter how you go at those stairs, you will never walk down them in sync. It’s like they were purposely built without rhythm and I bet the guys who built them were laughing the whole time because they knew that generations of students would

walk down those stairs and no one would ever be able to do it properly. I want to wish the best of luck to you all and I want you to go out there and do something that makes you happy, then find someone to love and share that happiness with. It doesn’t matter if you become CEO of a multi-million dollar company, or you get a job as the guy who names hurricanes as long as you’re happy and enjoy it. As for

love, you’ll have to find that person who was meant for you. And you’ll know when you find them. You’ll get this tightening in your chest every time they smile at you, a million butterflies in your stomach every time they touch you, and when you’re alone with them you’ll feel weightless, like the breath has been taken right from your chest and you wish you could just freeze the moment and live in it forever.
This person will typically be the total opposite of the person you are ... but they’ll complete you in the most serene way. When you find this person, hold on tight and don’t let go, because in the end it won’t be your money or possessions that are with you, it’ll be your love. As I end my speech, I’d love to finish with a phrase from our very own Mr. Gaylord … Head in a positive direction Grads of 2012! A positive direction!

The documentary The Hole Story will be shown in the Williams Lake library Program Room Wednesday, June 27 starting at 7 p.m. The showing is free. The 52-minute documentary by Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie explores the vast territories of northern Quebec and Ontario which contain a wealth of mineral resources. For more than 100 years, they have been controlled by private companies governed by Canada’s Mining Act, which takes precedence over all other legislation. This film explores the history of how these resources have been used, and the battles that have ensued.

TWO-STOREY WITH CRAFTSMAN-STYLE This handsome two-storey, three-bedroom home, with its Craftsman-style detailing and wrap-around veranda, is sure to please the most discerning family. Entry is through a covered porch into a double-height foyer. Ahead, past the staircase on the right, are the great room and dining room, both featuring dramatic double-height ceilings. These rooms enjoy access to a covered porch for easy barbecuing, and the dining room has an optional builtout buffet. A handy phone desk is tucked into one side of the great room, which also boasts a corner ďŹ replace. The kitchen is set off from the great room and dining room by a raised eating bar, which is extra-wide to accommodate a double sink and counter space as well. The L-shaped counter conďŹ guration promises efďŹ ciency, and a pantry will provide extra storage space. A door from the great room leads to the den which, thanks to a closet, can double as a guest bedroom. Between the den and the foyer are the laundry room, a coat closet and a powder room. The laundry room has access to the double garage. Upstairs, the master suite features a curving glassedin balcony that overlooks the great room, as well as a bay window with a window seat. The walk-in closet will provide plenty of space for his and her clothing, and the en suite features double sinks, a soaker tub and a glassed-in shower stall. The fact that the toilet is separated from the en suite will be welcome, especially
during the morning rush to work. The second and third bedrooms share a three-piece bathroom with a towel cupboard. A handy laundry chute will eliminate the chore of lugging soiled linens and clothing to the laundry room below. Exterior ďŹ nishes include gracefully tapered columns, siding and decorative shingles, as well as painted trim. Windows are partially mullioned. This home measures 38 feet wide and 62 feet deep, for a total of 2,489 square feet, including an unďŹ nished basement. Plans for design 7-3-928 are available for $746 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $890 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C. Please add 12% H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges. Our 44TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $13.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling).
