Thieves spoil riding plans for students BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Mike Lunsford and three of his friends received less than southern hospitality during their first night in Nanaimo last week. Having spent 11 days on the road beginning in their home state of Arkansas with Nanaimo as their destination, the group wanted to celebrate graduating from the University of Central Arkansas with a mountain bike vacation while topping off their education with a sevenweek exchange program at Vancouver Island University. “We’d heard a lot of great things about riding here, and at Mount Washington and Whistler, and this is where we wanted to come,” said Lunsford, 22. After arriving on the 4 p.m. ferry on June 15, they did a quick orientation drive through town before visiting the campus, where they learned a room at the student residence wasn’t yet available. To continue with their adventure and strict budget, the group decided to save some money and sleep in their Toyota 4 Runner in the Travel Lodge parking lot on Terminal Avenue. With luggage under a tarp on the roof and four top-end mountain bikes locked with two locks on a rear bike carrier, they fell asleep at about 10 p.m. “I woke up at 5 a.m. and the truck was moving like there was a really high wind or something,” said Lunsford. “Then it sort of occurred to me that someone was trying to get our bikes. I woke the other guys up.” The four exploded out of the truck as a man was riding away on one bike. Justin, the bike’s owner, ran him down and pulled him off. Lunsford’s bike was already gone. The locks had been cut clean by a sharp instrument. ◆ See ‘THEFT’ /4

Advisory board doubts Ferries’ profit recovery

city scene

Broken pipe floods hospital A water main break in the basement of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital early Saturday resulted in three cancelled surgeries and damage to several areas. Anya Nimmon, Vancouver Island Health Authority spokeswoman, said a main water line broke under the concrete slab in the basement at about 3 a.m. Three offices, a mechanical room and the medical device reprocessing department, which cleans and sterilizes medical equipment, were impacted. Workers cut up the floor and a new concrete floor was poured Sunday. The incident cost more than $50,000 and is covered by insurance.

Shipping lane A rush-hour altercation between two vehicles resulted some unscheduled shore leave on Terminal Avenue for a sport fishing boat Friday. The boat was dumped in the fast lane at about 4 p.m. when a westbound car went out of control and sideswiped the trailer. No one was injured in the crash and police are investigating.

Mounties nab holdup suspects

Two men have been arrested for allegedly committing three armed robberies of the 7-Eleven convenience store on Terminal Avenue in central Nanaimo. The holdups happened April 24, May 2, and most recently, on June 17. In each case a knife was used and cash and cigarettes were taken. One suspect, 27, was arrested Wednesday at an apartment in the 600 block of Townsite Road by Nanaimo RCMP Crime Reduction Unit members. The second suspect, 24, was arrested at his home on Cedar Road Thursday afternoon. Both men appeared in court Friday to face recommended charges of three counts of armed robbery.

AGING EQUIPMENT to be upgraded thanks to funding. BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Recess at two Nanaimo elementary schools is about to get more fun. Chase River Elementary School gets $50,000 for a new playg round and Georgia Avenue Elementary School will receive $25,000 to replace some of the older equipment, the Education Ministry announced Thursday. Last fall, the province made an $8-million playground funding commitment – an unusual step because historically, parent groups have been responsible for raising the money to put playgrounds at schools, although government money has sometimes gone toward grant programs that parent groups can access. Nanaimo did not qualify for any funding in the first two rounds of handouts through

the program, but in this third and final round of funding, 80 schools in all 60 school districts shared in the $3.3 million. Pete Sabo, district director of planning and operations, said the province chose the district’s highest priorities for both a full playground replacement and an upgrade. “I’m sure it will make a substantial difference at those schools,” he said. “We’re going to provide the PAC groups all the support we can.” District staff will work with the schools and parents to determine the scope and time frame of the projects. For Julie Addison, in charge of the Chase River parent group’s fundraising, the grant means the students won’t have to wait any longer – parents have been fundraising for a couple of years for a new playground and they figured it would take at least a couple more. “We’ll be able to get a fancy park for $50,000,” she said. “I would love to see it done over the summer.” There is little left of the cur-

rent playground at Chase River because as the wood decays, staff have had to remove parts for safety reasons. “I can’t believe how much the kids play on it even though it’s junky,” said Addison. Shelley Green, principal of Georgia Avenue, said the school wants to replace its aging equipment, including some swings and slides that have been at the school for “100 years”, with more modern equipment. “This is an absolute bonus,” she said. Playgrounds nowadays are more than just swings and slides, said Green. She said the equipment allows students to play games and in teams, use their imaginations and develop fine motor skills, all of which readies them to learn. “We certainly need it,” said Green. Sabo said there are still several other schools that are in need of playground replacements or major upgrades, but the funding is welcome.

Ferry Advisory Committee chairs say they are less optimistic than B.C. Ferries after the corporation announced in its 2012 fiscal results that it plans to return to profitability by 2014. B.C. Ferries is reporting a net loss of $16.5 million for the year ending March 31, 2012, and is forecasting “a small loss for fiscal 2013”, driven mostly by significantly lower traf fic levels than expected. In its report, B.C. Ferries stated it expects to make a profit in two years assuming there is no further deterioration of customer traffic. The corporation is at a 21-year low in passenger traffic and a 13-year low in vehicle traffic, a pattern the committee doesn’t see changing unless fares drop. “The main point is we have yet to see any evidence of it,” said John Hodgkins, chairman of the Gabriola ferry advisory committee. “If you take the Gabriola ferry route, up until April, we’re still seeing a year-onyear decline of four per cent for both passengers and vehicles and it’s very difficult to read into that any signs of recovery.” With three years left in Performance Term 3, fares are expected to increase well beyond inflation rates for at least that time frame. In January, changes were made to the

AQUA GLOBES Waters Plants 2 Pack

Coastal Fer ry Act based on 18 recommendations by ferry commissioner Gord Macatee, which could result in service reductions on minor routes that have less than 30 per cent ridership. Gabriola has a ridership rate in the mid-40 per cent range. A consultation of coastal communities by the province and B.C. Ferries is expected to continue throughout the summer with some changes implemented later this year. Part of the changes to the act included the province topping up B.C. Ferries subsidy by $79.5 million over four years, on top of the annual $150-million annual subsidy in an effort to keep fares down. Revenues for the corporation’s last fiscal year saw a decrease from $739.3 million to $738.2 million, while operating expenses increased from $672.2 million to $682.7 million. A $10.5-million increase in fiscal 2012 operating expenses include increases of $4 million in fuel expenses and $8.5 million in amortization costs. B.C. Ferries is currently exploring the possibility of using liquified natural gas to fuel the fleet, which could save the company about $30 million. In February, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Blair Lekstrom said bridges and cable ferries were on the table. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Mike Lunsford and three friends drove from Arkansas to Nanaimo for a mountain bike holiday. On their first night in the Harbour City, after 11 days on the road, Lunsford had his expensive bike stolen right off the SUV they were sleeping in at the time.

Theft of bicycles increasing in town ◆ From /1 “I spent the next five hours searching all of downtown for it,” said Lunsford. “In the bushes, everywhere. When I saw someone riding a bike I stopped them to see if any of my bike’s parts were on it. I didn’t know what else to do. Everything we had planned for the seven weeks was around riding.” Stolen was Lunsford’s flat black Specialized SX Trail mountain bike with unique RockShox Pike front suspension, Fox rear suspension and blue anodized rims. The rig is worth about $4,000. “It’s all custom, everything but the frame,” said Lunsford. “It hurts getting it stolen but it hurts more knowing that whoever stole it probably doesn’t appreciate it.” RCMP describe two suspects as Caucasian males in their 20s. One of them was wearing a NASCAR hat while the other had long scraggly hair and scruffy clothes. “It was definitely a crime of opportunity and unfortunately they were in the wrong spot at the wrong time,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Gary O’Brien. “It was definitely a rude awakening, to arrive in Nanaimo and have this happen. That’s not the impression we want to leave visitors with here.” O’Brien said bike theft is on an increase in the city, and that some, especially expensive ones, end up being traded for drugs. “We let our guard down on one night,” said Lunsford, who is offering a $300 reward, no questions asked. “We’re usually pretty good at knowing our surroundings and who’s around. It seemed pretty safe.” It’s the third time in recent weeks exchange students in Nanaimo have been victims of theft. Anyone with information relating to this crime is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-7542345 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.crimestoppers.com. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Cigarette suspected in fire Fire officials suspect a cigarette butt is to blame for a blaze in the siding of a house near Bowen Park Friday evening. Ennis Mond, fire investigator with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, said the fire started in the alcove outside the front door of a house in the 600 block of First Street just before 11:30 p.m. The owner of the house and her daughter were home at the time and noticed quickly. “They could hear a crackling sound and they went and looked and the one side of the alcove was on fire, he said. “If they didn’t notice it, there would have been a major house fire. They were very lucky in the sense that if they were

sleeping, the fire would have gone up into the roof and burnt the roof off. The fire damaged the door as well as one side of the alcove. The owner of the house has insurance. Mond is still investigating, but suspects the fire is related to smoking – the mother and daughter confirmed that they had company earlier in the evening and people were out on the deck smoking.

Gabriola health clinic sees first emergencies BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Even before they finished settling in to their offices at the Gabriola Health Care Centre, doctors were already handling their first emergency. Since the clinic

opened on June 11, there have been 14 patients brought into the emergency department with conditions such as lacerations, severe abdominal pain and a patient who was injured by a chainsaw. “We’re able to handle multiple emergen-

cies,” said Janice Kerr, clinic office manager, adding the two beds in the emergency room will increase to three once the equipment arrives. The clinic, operating on the main floor of the health care centre, relocated from its for-

mer spot at the Twin Beaches Shopping Centre. The centre’s medical emergency helicopter pad has also been cleared for operation. “Hopefully we will never have to use it, but it’s there if we need it to save a life,” said Kerr. The vision to construct a health care centre for Gabriola Island began in 2006. The major fundraising push began in 2010, which the Gabriola Health Care Foundation designated the Year of the Clinic with an ambitious goal to raise $1 million by the end of the year. The foundation has raised more than $1.35 million for the centre, plus in-kind dona-

tions of supplies to go toward the construction of the building. The bulk of the money was raised through fundraising and by donations. The Vancouver Island Health Authority contributed

a $100,000 grant. Kerr said the foundation did an excellent job creating the centre and the building is beautiful and functional. The clinic has two full-time doctors and wants to attract two more to serve patient needs as there are about 100 people on

the waiting list for a physician. The current doctors also split the on-call services to treat emergencies. The Gabriola Community Health Centre is at 695 Church St. The official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is Aug. 5 from 1-3 p.m. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Dog handler learns patience, problem solving

KADYNCE GREENE participates in first show at Beban Park. BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Kadynce Greene trudged back and forth on the patch of grass outside the show ring while her peach-coloured dog Truffles followed obediently beside her. The five-year-old from Cassidy was getting in a few practice minutes before competing. For the last year she’s wanted to start showing dogs. “It’s fun and I saw my aunt do it and I want to do it,” she said. The Nanaimo Kennel Club’s annual Dog Show and Obedience Trials held at the Beban Park Centennial Building June 16 was her first competition. “I’m good,” said Kadynce about how she felt going into her peewee event. Kadynce’s aunt, Yvonne Greene, from Cedar, has competed in shows for the past nine years. Yvonne said her niece has watched her during competitions and decided it was something she wanted to be involved in. While the competition is fun, it’s also teaching Kadynce skills such as good sportsmanship, said her aunt. “It teaches her gentleness with

the animals. Kids sometimes get frustrated and pull on the leash and this will give her some tools to not do those kinds of things or think ‘how am I going to get this dog to come’,” said Yvonne. “It gives her skills to communicate with other people. It’s socialization for her just as much as the dog.” As Kadynce progresses in her skill level and gets older, she’ll be able to show larger dogs. “When they are in the peewees they have to have a size appropriate dog so they have control over it,” said Yvonne. “She’ll show mine when she gets older.” Kadynce was able to borrow a dog for the competition from Bev Dorma, of Misty Trails Havanese. Both she and her aunt said they “fell in love” with the havanese Kadynce was showing. Kadynce is the only competitor in the peewee category, but that doesn’t stop her from being as professional as she can in the ring. As she circles inside the white picket fence, she makes sure to smile at the judges and keeps her dog running on her left side. Exiting the ring, Kadynce said she can’t wait to do more competitions in the future. “It was fun,” she said, while putting Truffles in a dog crate in the preparation area before heading home. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Improvement gained with literacy program BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

To succeed in school, one must first know how to read. And a new project piloted in Nanaimo school district this year aimed to ensure this important prerequisite for academic excellence is in place. Shelley Beleznay, the district’s coordinator of literacy and learning, worked with Grade 2 teachers at five elementary schools to focus on early literacy initiatives as a team. A provincewide goal in the education sector is to have all children meeting expectations in reading by Grade 4, so district officials decided to focus on Grade 2 students at Bayview, Brechin, Fairview, Georgia Avenue and Mountain View

elementary schools. “These teachers all had a high number of kids who weren’t meeting expectations at the end of Grade 1,” said Beleznay. “You don’t want to intervene too early because some kids developmentally aren’t ready to read in Grade 1.” The teachers met several times to discuss different strategies they use to get kids reading more. “Just getting teachers together in one room is awesome,” said Beleznay. “Any time that you work together and think hard, you’re bound to make some headway. Sometimes when you’re so busy working, you don’t have time to reflect.” She said teachers tried to keep students reading and writing for 50 per cent of the school day and used various strategies to do so,

including word games, morning messages and singing exercises, where students were given the words afterwards. While the results from all schools aren’t in yet, data from Brechin shows major improvements – some of the struggling students had tripled their reading comprehension levels between the start of the year and the end and every single one was meeting expectations for their grade level or better. Beleznay said teachers learned the importance of providing students with a constant influx of books on a wide range of topics that matched their individual reading levels and as a result, educators at the district resource centre have rearranged the book bins available to teachers to meet student needs better.

More than 100 help bust broom this season

Broombusters have reason to celebrate, says organizer Joanne Sales. That’s because more than 100 people showed up to cut broom this year from Courtenay to Nanaimo, she said. “Although the gorse remains, Island Highway through Parksville was cleared of a lot of broom by volunteers and a substantial dent was made in the ocean of broom on the interchanges,” said Sales. “In Courtenay, teams of up to 20 Broombusters went out a couple times a week for six weeks. “The Nanaimo group cleared parks and cut the broom beside Woodgrove Centre. “Woodgrove Centre is helping the cause by posting Broombuster signs in the parking lots and Rotarians are committed and spreading the word.” Sales said groups and councils from Campbell River to Victoria are wondering how the Broombuster model can be transplanted to their communities. And that is the goal of Broombusters – to enable and empower communities everywhere to conquer their own broom problems. “The broom is spreading, but not as fast as the commitment to contain it,” she said. The broom-cutting season has come to an end with the yellow blossoms falling off the plants.

Beleznay said next year school officials hope to continue with the focused support for Grade 2 teachers, including a greater focus on incorporating more technology and peer reading initiatives as well as getting teachers together to problem solve. Another spinoff is that educators are working on a district-wide literacy framework that details how to create the optimal learning environment and ways the district should support teachers. Chris Southwick, assistant superintendent, said this initiative is important to boosting student achievement levels. “If a child isn’t reading fluently by the end of Grade 4, their chances are greatly reduced in terms of academic success,” she said.

Ruling raises difficult issue Expect an appeal of a decision against the law forbidding physician-assisted suicide in Canada. The momentous ruling June 15 by B.C. Supreme Court Judge Lynn Smith would likely be appealed whichever way it went. As it is, she upheld a challenge by three plaintiffs because the law’s provisions “unjustifiably infringe the equality rights” of one of the trio as well as “the rights to life, liberty and security” of the other two. If law is expected to mirror the values of the people to whom it applies, it’s hard to accept a continuation of the status quo. For example, 21 per cent of respondents in a Forum Research survey of Canadians in December opposed physician-assisted suicide and 12 per cent said they had no opinion. Sixty-seven per cent said they support physician-assisted suicide. Tell that to the B.C. and Canadian governments, whose lawyers vigourously argued for assisted suicide to remain punishable by as much as 14 years in prison. Would legalizing or decriminalizing doctor-assisted suicide result in abuse of the aged and vulnerable? Would the decision cause a “slippery slope” that would lead to other rulings that could undermine the sanctity of life? Those are only two valid concerns. In spite of astounding medical advances, people still die agonizing deaths from afflictions such as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, with no hope of cure or much relief. Should society legally or morally have the right to tell you or a loved one in this frightful predicament that – in spite of being informed, mentally competent and not coerced – that you must continue to suffer against your wishes? Governments have a year before the ruling takes effect. May they use the time to wrestle honestly and fairly with this weighty matter that no doubt gave Smith some sleepless nights. More than 32,000 projects didn’t meet their goals and never became a reality, but about 25,000 did succeed. For those that didn’t make it, sometimes Kickstarter can become a platform for people or companies to refine a project. If the project fails to meet its funding goal it gives the creators a chance to ask themselves why. It also gives them a chance to ask people why they didn’t like it and perhaps improve their product to one that consumers will back and potentially buy if or when it comes to market. Although the site is a great platform for people to get their ideas out there, the difficulty is that there are those who take advantage of the platform. People only have the individuals pledge that this money will be used to create the project. I hope it isn’t used for scammers, because the usefulness of such a platform is exciting. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Gabriola Island residents wary of B.C. Ferries’ service options To the Editor, The B.C. government has started the process of consultation with island communities, in an attempt to plan the future of the ferry system. The choice of consultant should be complete sometime in July. The government has recently amended the Coastal Ferry Act to include all options – including, bridge alternatives – to replace increasingly expensive ferry systems. The last survey of the attitutudes of Gabriola Island residents to transportation choices pegged dissatisfaction with the present situation of high costs at more than 50 per cent, and 35 per cent of Gabriolans would prefer a bridge instead. The Gabriola ferry run loses money and the province is displaying concern about its ability to cover future costs. The upcoming public discussion of our future needs will include reductions in service, as many runs are almost empty, so our choice will be reduction of service, increased costs or a bridge. I wonder what the choices for Salt Spring Island residents will be, because they have three ferry services and six terminals to service their needs? Will Salt Spring have a single bridge alternative to three ferries to choose from? We must ensure that the upcoming survey of our opinions are conducted with a private ballot like in an election to avoid name calling and disparaging remarks. Maybe we can ask for a second ferry service, direct to Vancouver, like Salt Spring Island has? Would not that be fair? Jeremy Baker Gabriola Island

Support woes creates winners, losers

To the Editor, One of the government’s defined purposes of the Learning Improvement Fund is “consideration of all classes and students with respect to addressing learning issues”. Prior to 2002, students in B.C. had a guaranteed right to a base level of support in the classroom. Now, struggling students and/ or classrooms have the right to be ‘considered’ for additional support. Schools and class-

rooms must compete for limited supports available, with winners and losers created as a result. Nanaimo has the highest level of child poverty and second highest class sizes in the province. Obviously, there is little support for the majority of students with unique learning needs. Of the 800 times a teacher has informed the principal their classroom was not appropriate for student learning, the prin-

cipal has never agreed with the classroom professional. This leaves the teacher with no other choice but to volunteer their lunchtime and after school to try and meet the needs of students struggling to learn in oversized and under-supported classroom environments. Instead of standing up for the right of students, Mel Joy, chairwoman of BCPSEA board of directors, has chosen to spend her time fighting for teachers to provide free labour.

Teachers had been giving up their lunch hours to compensate for the government’s refusal to provide support for all students. Now, as a result of our job action, we expose our chronically underfunded education system and, as Joy has made abundantly clear, “the emperor has no clothes”. Derek DeGear president Nanaimo and District Teachers’ Association

Readers respond: Feedback on news items Many socialists figure wealth is redistributed To the Editor, Re: Income inequality a child of the ’70s, Letters, June 21. I would have ignored this response to my June 14 letter but for the statement “students and protesters and environmentalists who Corder fears’ most.” Nothing in my letter suggested a fear of those people. Just as I didn’t admit to not being an economist, but obviously David Geselbracht has found a new way to read. To be clear, I think most students intend to become productive members of society. I have a problem with too many academics being addicted to lecturing on issues like personal identity, diversity, ethnicity, etc., rather than opening up a world beyond the campus. This only contributes to student protesters who think the world owes them an education and a living. Kids should be taught ‘how’ to think, not ‘what’ to think, but that’s another rant. Other protesters? Those in Egypt accomplished something and the final election outcome will tell us what, but the cost was enormous. In this country, protesters exhibit their raging narcissism, but accomplish nothing and many should be out looking for work. Environmentalists? No problem other than with those who keep predicting an

apocryphal apocalypse and those who push a green agenda because they’re invested in the green industry. Then there’s Geselbracht’s path to a socialist utopia by regulating the markets. Does that mean more of the current supply management that has poultry and dairy products too expensive for some consumers? More government bureaucracy designed to inhibit growth and stifle progress? How many jobs does that create? Perhaps, like many socialists, Geselbracht figures that wealth is just redistributed rather than having to be created. Jim Corder Nanaimo

Firefighters’ raise a forgone conclusion To the Editor, Re: Firefighters’ wages dominate municipal employee payroll, June 21. Mayor John Ruttan needs to get some backbone. I’m ashamed that I voted for him and insulted for myself and all the other hardworking and underpaid citizens of Nanaimo. His statement that “he isn’t in a position to comment on the firefighter’s wages because they are at the bargaining table” is nothing short of outrageous and a gutless cop out. It confirms that the firefighters’ wage increase is a foregone conclusion. The firefighters use the media all the time to play their “pro-

tecting the citizens” card during wage negotiations. Ruttan, like other weak-kneed politicians before him, is being conned, as proven by his comment “that because of Nanaimo’s linear shape, ensuring proper response times is a challenge”. It seems Ruttan believes that “proper response times” as suggested in the National Fire Protection Association Standard is the gospel. Ruttan and other councillors better get their priorities straight. You’ll never be able to protect all the citizens even if you had a fire station on every block. But you can protect all the citizens from ever-increasing taxes. Brent Kaufmann Nanaimo

Recent gasoline prices points to gouging To the Editor, Re: Gas price reflects other costs, Letters, June 19; Oil companies gouge customers, Letters, June 16. Further to the last couple of letters about local gas gouging, I believe I have our gas stations figured out. For the longest time, gas stayed at a steady $1.33 per litre. Then, all of a sudden, in a matter of hours, gas jumped to an unbelievable price of $1.49/l. Since then, gas has been slowly dropping to $1.39/l to a current price of $1.37/l. Why is that? The Associated Press announced recently the drop in oil prices have made gasoline cheaper for motorists. In the U.S., motorists are paying $0.91/l. The report states oil has hit its lowest price since October 2011. We were paying between $1.23/l to $1.32/l for gas in October 2011. What is the current national average gas price? About $1.24/l, down 2.5 cents from a month ago. We were at $1.33/l at the pumps a month ago. No matter what kind of spin certain people like to put on it, we are being gouged. But local gas station owners think we are stupid enough to believe that because prices have fallen from $1.49, we are counting our blessings. I don’t think so. Petra Tschauner Nanoose Bay

Participants in the Building a LEGacy fitness challenge raised more than $6,200 to send young girls to the Esteemed CHICs summer camps that focus on positive body image and self-esteem.

Camps build girls’ self-esteem

I

TEENS PROVIDED a foundation for healthy living.

Getting a leg up on fitness proved beneficial in removing barriers for girls wanting to attend summer camp. Sarah and David Gilks, owners of Core Essentials gym, ran Building a LEGacy fitness challenge from March to June with more than 100 women taking part. To make the challenge different, they raised funds for young girls in the community to attend the Esteemed CHICs (Choosing Health and

Integrating Changes) summer camps that focus on positive body image, self-esteem and healthy living. The fitness participants wanted to send 20 girls to camp. A one-week camp costs $250/child and they exceeded their goal raising $6,250 over the 12-week challenge. Angela Slade, camp founder and child and youth counsellor, knows the importance of teaching young girls healthy body image and confidencebuilding skills. “For many girls, even as young as five, being ‘model thin’ is a goal and with more and more TV shows and Internet images focused on

appearance, their self-esteem is constantly being challenged,” she said. Slade developed the summer camps seven years ago while doing her undergrad in child and youth care. The day camps use age appropriate discussions and activities to provide girls with a positive foundation on which to build a happy and healthy young teen. “I encourage them to be who they truly are, not what someone wants them to be,” she said. For more information on the camps, please call 250-668-7454 or go to www.esteemedchics. com.

When School is out... Driving isn’t Child’s Play! The final bell of the school year has rung, so the neighbourhood children are all over the place. They’ll be going to the park. Riding their bikes. Flying kites. And, they’ll inevitably be running into the street or a parking lot to retrieve a stray ball. When you’re behind the wheel, especially during the summer, please keep a watchful eye out for children who may not be thinking of anything beyond the game of the moment. They may not realize it, but their lives may depend on your ability to stop in time.

HHeather Keizur incorporates Frennch into Canada Dayy performance p e BY MELISSA FRYER I THE NEWS BULLETI N eather Keizur always loved the French language. Born in the U.S., but raised mostlly in Canada, she tried to mimic the sounds of Frenc ch as a child. “I th hink I tried to say it long before I could d speak k it,” she said. Keizzur performs a selection of French and d English ja azz standards as part of her Canada Da ay concert at Diners Rendezvous. Keizzur caught the performance bug at a ta alent show in Grade 7. Her vocal talent earned he er second pllace. “I’d never performed in front of anyone be efore,” Keizu ur said. Afte er that, she sang for fundraisers and ev vents, compe eting in the Miss Port Alberni pageantt in 1981. At 19, she started playing in jazz clubs in Nanaiimo and Victoria, moving to California a in 1984 before she settled in Portland. She stopped performing, instead raising he er childr ren. Once her children were grown, she e starte ed performing again. “We have an amazing jazz scene,” Keizur said. ◆ See ‘SINGE ER’ /23

She was nervous heading to that first jam but soon realized she needn’t be. “They are unbelievable musicians who just show up at the jazz jams,” Keizur said. “They still welcomed me – they coached me.” At the jams she met many of the musicians who performed on her album. Steve Christofferson accompanies Keizur during her concerts by playing piano and melodica, also called a bloworgan or a key flute. “He’s really got a soul for music,” Keizur said. “His passion for music is equal to mine.” Her love of the French language translated to music and she sang La Vie En Rose, which garnered so much praise she added the French songs to her repertoire. Timbermen win another

I

SR. A TEAM beats Maple Ridge 10-6.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Nanaimo Timbermen junior B lacrosse player Travis Mickelson scores the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left in Sunday’s game against the Cowichan Valley Thunder at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The home team went on to win 8-6.

Last-minute goals lift junior B lacrosse team BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The junior B Nanaimo Timbermen aren’t just playing out the string – they’re still trying to win. On Sunday, the city’s Pacific North West Junior Lacrosse League team won the best game of the season so far, a dramatic 8-6 comeback victory over the rival Cowichan Valley Thunder. It was a game that the home team trailed 5-2 at one point. “Last 20 minutes, give ’er all you’ve

En

got, boys, drain the tanks, coach Matt Rinas told his team going into the third period. They got the message. “We wanted to go hard for the rest of the game and not disappoint any of the fans up there because there was finally a nice big crowd, said Kyle Middleton, T-men forward. It looked like the comeback might fall short when the Thunder scored to go up 6-4 with just over five minutes left. But Middleton’s solo effort a few seconds later put his team back within one, and then, with less

than a minute and a half left and the goalie pulled, Middleton scored on a rebound to tie things up. The T-men had the Thunder reeling, and the visitors failed to notice Timbermen sniper Travis Mickelson camping out all by himself in the attacking zone. He got a long pass and made no mistake on his breakaway attempt, burying the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left. The home team added one more with two seconds to go. ◆ See ‘IMPROVING’ /30

The Nanaimo Timber men ke pt pace in the Western Lacrosse Association by winning on the road for the first time this season. The senior A lacrosse team (4-3-1) defeated the Maple Ridge Burrards 10-6 on Sunday. The Coastal Windows Timber men knew they needed to find a way to get a good start on the road and they were able to do just that, said coach Art Webster. They parlayed a strong pregame warm-up into a 4-2 first-period lead. “When we go on the road we have to have that jump, he said. In the second period goaltending was the story, as Zak Boychuk stopped 16 of 17 Burrards shots to help his team extend its margin to 7-3. In the third, the home team drew within one. “We didn’t panic, we stayed together, kept moving the ball, swinging the ball and

we scored three in a row and just sealed it,â€? Webster said. Cayle Ratcliff paced the offence with a hat trick, Scott Ranger had two goals and four assists and Ryan Keith also scored twice. Cory Conway had a goal and six assists and Cody Bremner had a goal and five helper. Myles Kenny was Nanaimo’s other scorer. “That’s what we need to take some of the pressure off of Scotty and Conway and [Joel] Henry,â€? said the coach. “When they’re not banging the ball into the net we need other people to do it.â€? The defence was a bit undermanned – forward Kyle Hofer had to help out on the back end – but it outplayed Maple Ridge’s offence. “Our defence made sure we were packing the middle and not getting spread out all over the floor,â€? Webster said. GAME ON ‌ The T- m e n h o s t t h e Coquitlam Adanacs (5-5) on Saturday (June 30) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 for children. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Justin Clarkson hit a single and a double. The rematch saw the Mariners get to Pirates pitcher Colby Morgan, who had gone into the game as the league’s

◆ From /29 “They made me wait until the last two minutes to see it happen,” Rinas said. “It was a little intense on the bench.” Especially since Cowichan has had Nanaimo’s number in recent seasons. “That one felt awesome, it felt better than the rest, for sure, to beat those guys,” said Middleton. “They’re not our best friends, to say the least.” Middleton had a hat trick, Mickelson had two goals and two assists and Kyle G ro at - S a l u k a l s o scored twice. Remy Koch had Nanaimo’s other goal, Ryan Davies dished three assists and Armin

Grewal was the winning goalie. The junior B Timbermen (3-12-1) say it will take another 60-minute effort this Wednesday (June 27), when they host the firstplaced Westshore Bears (12-3). Coming off an exciting win, the T-men feel like they’re ready, with good team chemistry these days. “It’s getting to know one another out there, knowing how they play and using that to our advantage,” Middleton said.
