Even though water levels didn’t reach the anticipated 40-year high, Wardle Street was still a local tourist attraction with people gathering at several spots in the area to take photographs. Numerous residents, including children, also took the opportunity to dip their feet in the Fraser, despite the barricades and police tape put up at Seventh and Allison avenues. “People were in there walking around,” said fire chief Tom DeSorcy, who is also Hope’s emergency preparedness coordinator. “The water on Wardle Street is actually moving water. It’s flowing from the mouth of the Coquihalla and hits the Fraser and kind of turns left. A person can easily be swept away, which is our biggest Continued on 3

The current situation on the Fraser River could have the potential to slow upstream salmon migration this year. David Patterson, a research biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, said historic information has shown that high flows persisting for more than a week can lead to fish exhaustion and death. “The primary concern of high river flows at Hope is the upstream migration success of the early-timed Fraser sockeye salmon,” he said. “Earlytimed Chinook salmon are the main run of salmon currently migrating through the Fraser Canyon. These fish are typically much larger than sockeye salmon, and are better able to swim against high river flows.” The fishways located at Hell’s Gate were built to help move Fraser sockeye and pink salmon through the canyon from July to September. Feds fund local research

Hope & Area Transition Society has received a federal funding boost to help address homelessness. Almost $70,000 has been provided through the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS) for a new research project aimed at identifying people migrating to Hope, Boston Bar and Agassiz. “Too often I think there’s the temptation for governments to impose solutions or think they know what’s happening in rural and remote communities,” said Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl. “So projects like this actually get on the ground local knowledge which will help the community itself determine how best to address the issues facing the homeless and those at risk of being homeless.” Once the study is completed, a final report will be shared with

Suspicious death near Boston Bar A 25-year-old Alberta resident was killed near Boston Bar over the weekend. Homicide investigators were called to Sandy Pines Campground in Nahatlatch Valley at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday after Bradley Dean Ross was

found unresponsive in a tent at the Entheos Summer Solstice Festival and Conference. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene and appears to have “met with foul play.” “The scene will take some

time to process as there (were) over 1,000 people in attendance at this gathering,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound. “Investigators will be at the scene for several days looking to identify all of the attendees and Entheos event staff.”

Investigators have not made any arrests or identified any suspects at this time. Anyone with information regarding the homicide is asked to call 1-877-551-IHIT(4448) or email ihittipline@rcmp-grc. gc.ca.

fear. It’s blocked off for their safety.” Water also came close to breaching the berm on Landstrom Road last week and seepage appeared in several areas including Laidlaw, Tom Berry Road, and near the Hope airport. The district is now keeping a close eye on the viewing deck at Centennial Park on Water Avenue. It’s currently barricaded off due to water erosion of the bank below. An engineer with the province is expected in Hope this week to assess its stability. Once water levels return to normal, DeSorcy said the district and province will also be looking into future flooding mitigation options in the area. While water levels have remained steady over the past few days, local emergency management officials are expecting the Fraser to rise again by Saturday as another weekend of heavy rainfall and snow melt makes its way down from up north. DeSorcy said that 60 per cent of the lower Fraser’s volume comes from the Prince

George area, 30 per cent comes from the Thompson River system and 10 per cent comes from tributaries in the local area. There are currently 43 properties in Hope that remain on evacuation alert this week. Hope Golf Club is also preparing to close its course again over the Canada Day long weekend due to predicted rising water on the Fraser. Several holes have been submerged for weeks and the entire course was closed last weekend due to flooding. “It’s come down quite a bit from the high on Friday,” said club operator Kerry Krahn on Monday, noting that five holes are now open. “The only thing that will cause damage is if water stays on the low points too long. The course drains really well, so once the river goes down, the water will come off the course and dry up quickly.” Krahn said flooding has made it tough for business since he and his wife Claudette took over operation of the club in 2011. “The Canada Day long weekend was our busiest weekend last year and we’ll be prob-

ably closed for it this year,” he said. “But the restaurant and banquet facility are open no matter what.” One Fraser Canyon business has managed to make a profit off the high river levels. The raging water at Hell’s Gate Airtram has generated a lot of interest and attracted visitors. The river peaked there Friday morning at close to 61 metres (200 feet), just cresting the highest fishway, and water flowed through the 33 metre wide gap at about 757 million litres (200 million gallons) per minute. “It’s definitely the highest its been in 40 years,” said general manager Debbie McKinney. “When you’re standing on the suspension bridge, the rumble of the river below you is just incredible. The whirlpools just open right up and you look right down inside them.” McKinney said a lot of debris has made its way through Hell’s Gate over the past week, including soccer balls, coolers and full-size trees that “look like little toothpicks coming through.”

Thank You

On behalf of the Hope Station House Community Arts & Heritage Society

New exhibit of abstract photos

This is a sincere thank you to the few dedicated Station House members, you know who you are, that worked long hours to plan and chair four successful fundraising events a BBQ, grad party, French/German dinner and Silent Auction. We thank all of the local merchants for their generous donations. Thanks again to the members that truly want to improve the appearance of the heritage train station for everyone in Hope. The senior citizens of our area must remember this train station when it was still in operation. I know I do. I remember waiting in this station in 1949, with two young sons for a trip to Clearwater. This train station is a part of everyone’s life. The society can use help from anyone willing to help us restore the Station House to the condition it deserves. I also want to thank the members for having trust and faith in me, to elect me as their president. With your dedication and hard work, we’ll succeed. Anna Chapman-Maguire President, Hope Station House

Jutta and Michael Schulz will be featured at the Hope Arts Gallery in July. The couple immigrated to Canada in 1994 and now live in Chilliwack, where they run Light and Day Photography. “Digital photography is our passion,” said Jutta. “Between the two of us we cover the tiny world of macros to the beauty of nature and the magnificence of landscapes.” They adhere closely to the principles of “genuine photography,” which means that computer manipulation of the images is kept to an absolute minimum. Both photographers also pay special attention to the natural light and shadows, looking for interesting ways to use depth of field, try different viewing angles and possibilities to capture the images in a more abstract way. For the backroom show at Hope Arts

Gallery, they decided to print all images on metal. “You’ll find the colors intense and full of depth,” said Jutta. “The main focus of

this exhibition is on abstract and minimalism themed images, but we also incorporate some nature scenes as well as close-ups.” All the prints dis-

played are one-offs and will not be reproduced again. The exhibition runs July 1-28, with an artists reception on July 7 from 2-4 p.m.

Celebrating local heritage Kerrie-Ann Schoenit Hope Standard

About 500 people attended the third annual National Aboriginal Day in Hope on Saturday. Hosted by Trails Crossing Friendship Centre, the celebration featured drumming and dancing by Sacred Connections (right), music with Earl “Earlvis” Louis (bottom left), standup comedy by Opi Oppenheimer (bottom right), traditional arts and crafts, bannock making, storytelling, carving by local artists, and a visit from the B.C. Elders Gathering king MI:Mel Spath (Roger Andrews) and Queen Yayuts Kiia (Audrey Kelly), who were representing the Shxw’ōw’hámel First Nation. “The weather held out for us. Mother Nature was definitely looking out over our shoulders because as soon as we finished at 4 p.m., it was stormy,” said event organizer Naydeen Spencer. “It was a lot of fun and well attended. People were happy to see the friendship centre in the community, but also that we were celebrating National Aboriginal Day. It’s really nice to have that recognition.” The 50/50 draw raised $91 for the non-profit organization this year.

Opinion

A temporary fix Recently, a 20-year-old man from Surrey received a month in jail for his part in the Stanley Cup riots, which took place just over a year ago. Many people are hoping this sets a precedent for future sentencing, and it should. A one-month term for taking part in a riot, in which millions of dollars in property damage was done, police were assaulted, 150 were injured and the global reputation of the Vancouver area was severely damaged, is light punishment. However, it is likely that many of those charged will not receive any punishment. Their cases may well be thrown out of court because of excessive delay, due to the severely plugged nature of the court system. If a case is delayed for 18 months or longer, through no fault of the defence, it is quite likely it will not come to trial. This is unacceptable. While it says volumes about the state of the court system, something that few people

pay attention to unless they are directly involved, it sends a bad message to the rioters. It tells them that they should do all they can to delay the process until they are charged. And, they should not plead guilty. As a result, they may see their case dropped. The provincial government should set up a temporary court which can solely deal with riot cases. Everyone who is charged in connection with the riot should face trial, and do time if found guilty. If such a temporary court proves to work well, it could be used in other situations – such as to relieve system congestion in specific areas. If rioters are able to get off without any consequences because of a backlog of cases, the criminal justice system needs some creative fixing. The province can do something about this – now. Authority must trump lawlessness. – Black Press

‘Poverty’ declines, nobody notices B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher You probably didn’t hear this on TV, but the percentage of Canadians deemed “low income” went down slightly in 2010, according to the latest Statistics Canada analysis. This news was delivered in the annual “Income of Canadians” report last week. The share of people who fall below the federal Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) went from 9.5 per cent to 9.0. The CBC couldn’t bring itself to admit any actual improvement, reporting on its website that the number of people with “low income” was about three million, “virtually unchanged from 2009.” Other media outlets followed the unwritten rule that nothing remotely positive must be presented as news, particu-

larly if it reflects positively on a right-wing government. (Plus they had the Montreal bodyparts case to update each day.) This information likely won’t have any effect on the political discussion about “poverty” in B.C. The LICO survey will continue to be used as a measure of absolute poverty, despite the fact that it isn’t. It’s a relative measure that will always designate the same share of people at the low end of the scale. BC Stats, the provincial equivalent of the federal agency, explained this problem in a special report last year. “To illustrate,” the report said, “take a hypothetical future Canada where every citizen earns no less than $100,000 (and assume there has not been rampant inflation in the meantime, such that buying power is not dissimilar to what exists today) and millionaires are common. “In that kind of Canada, those at the low end of the income

scale (that is, those earning ‘merely’ $100,000) would be considered poor if LICOs were used as a measure of poverty.” Math aside, that’s the alleged “poverty line” routinely cited by the usual media authorities, like B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair.

November, Sinclair called a news conference to announce it’s not enough. To get to the LICO level, the minimum wage should be $11.50 an hour, Sinclair said. Of course, if B.C. businesses ponied up for that, the goalposts would shift again and the same proportion of “poverty” would magically still exist. The B.C. NDP government-inwaiting continues to demand an “action plan” on poverty, with annual goals. All the progressive provinces have one, which I guess is why poverty is all but eradicated in enlightened places like Manitoba. There are signs of the reality behind this political smokescreen. Here’s one. For what may be the first time in history, we now have a North American society where one of the most reliable indicators of poverty is obesity. This often gets explained away with a popular theory that poor people

“...we now have a North American society where one of the most reliable indicators of poverty is obesity.”

Sinclair campaigned for years to get the B.C. government to raise the minimum wage from $8 to $10 an hour. They did, in three increments, and on May 1 it increased to $10.25 an hour. As soon as the series of three increases was announced last

are somehow forced to eat fast food and drink pop because they can’t afford healthy food. People who advance this theory presumably don’t do much grocery shopping. There are plenty of processed, sugary, fat-laden choices at the supermarket too. But there is also whole wheat bread, rice and fresh or frozen vegetables that are as cheap as anywhere in the world. Given basic cooking skills and some effort, it’s easy to demonstrate which diet is cheaper as well as healthier. Most immigrants know this. Which diet you choose isn’t a function of money, but rather one of education and self-discipline. There is genuine poverty in our society. One of the things that’s needed is a useful way to define it. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Letters Golfers launch Legion Week

Patronize your local businesses

Legion Week was kick started by 25 golfers who came out to brave the rainy weather and play in the Legion’s annual golf tournament held at the Hope Golf Club on Saturday, June 16. Despite the bad weather and some of the holes being under water and unplayable, a good time was had by all. A steak dinner was held downstairs in the Legion after the tournament, with Dave Flexhaug being the master chef and Tammy Bremner preparing the rest of the dinner. After everyone was fed, the prizes were awarded to the following: first place winners were Bob Jones and Chris Manahan, long drive went to Allan Trick and Tammy Shields, closest to the pin went to June Lowe and Allan Trick, and the most honest golfers (for their creative scoring) were Pat and Mike Pelletier and Bob Megale. Congratulations to Melvin Smith, winner of our seventh annual barbecue raffle. Thanks to all SUBMITTED PHOTO who bought tickets. Leanne Tourigny, president of the Hope Legion branch, gives a friendly wave Faye Stewart as she kick starts Legion Week at the Hope Golf Club on June 16.

Re: Disappointed by grad celebration, Letters (June 20) I recently stopped in Hope on my way up to visit my husband’s family in Williams Lake. We always stop in Hope for a meal at Rolly’s, for a walk around the river and to get gas and supplies. I was saddened to read the letter about the grad celebrations that were held outside of Hope. It makes my husband and I consider, quite shockingly, that some, especially younger people, don’t know or appreciate what you have in the city of Hope. To those of us not lucky enough to live there, it is a beautiful, bordering on ideal, piece of Canada where life is slower, but progressive and where potential can flourish more readily than in the “big city.” Having raised our four sons to their teens in the Lower Mainland, we are now anxious to move away from the hustle-bustle and commercialism of city life. Be proud of where you are from and patronize your local businesses. You have a good thing in Hope and many of us would be sad to see you lose it. Jennifer Thuncher

For the Conservatives correcting past mistakes QUESTION record OF THE WEEK: provided to our nation’s heroes. While the Liberals cut support to Allied Veterans and health care benefits, Conservatives took action to restore benefits to those whose support was cut off. The facts are we have spent the last six years correcting mistakes made by the previous Liberal government in the department of Veterans Affairs. We have doubled the amount of operational stress injury clinics to assist veterans with mental health issues

and we are investing $189 million over the next five years to make significant enhancements to the New Veterans Charter. Since forming government, we have considerably ramped up the number of full-time mental health professionals in the Canadian Forces – approximately 378 compared to 228 in 2006 – and we are working to hire more. When compared to our NATO allies, the Ca-

nadian Forces have the highest ratio of mental health professionals to soldiers. While Liberals try to hide from their record and spread fear amongst our veterans, the Conservative government is delivering real results for the men and women who have put their lives on the line for this great country. The letter “Disappointed with grad celebration” in the June 20 edition of The Hope Standard is not reflective of the celebration depicted in the accompanying photo. The event at Hope Station House on June 8 was a commencement celebration recognizing the achievement of nine students from the TREC and EXCELL programs at Two Rivers Education Centre. Mayor Susan Johnston, Chilliwack-Hope MLA Gwen O’Mahony, school district superintendent Karen Nelson, and trustees Marv Cope and Linda McMullan were in attendance, as well as family, friends and staff from a number of community agencies who have supported the programs.

Re: Vets Deserve Better, Letters (June 13) I was surprised to read Prince Edward Island Liberal MP Sean Casey raising the issue of support for veterans knowing the shameful record of the previous Liberal government, a period the former Chief of Defence staff called “the decade of darkness.” The sad truth is the last Liberal government cut 11 per cent from Veterans Affairs in 1995. This had a negative impact on the benefits and services

River flooding part of Hope history Kimberly Campbell and Inge Wilson Contributors

The Hope Visitor Centre & Museum Complex usually provides a stopping point for travellers seeking information about attractions, activities and accommodation throughout our area. But this past week, visitors have also been asking about the swollen Fraser River and what flood risk it might pose to our community and the Fraser Valley. In light of these questions about high water levels on the Fraser, museum staff have done some research to uncover what sort of impact the Fraser River floods have had on our community throughout recorded history. The first flood on record that affected the Hope area occurred in

This Tom Berry Road home was one of 10 that flooded when the Fraser River rose to a record height of over 10 metres in June 1972.

May and June of 1894. On May 29 it was reported that several bridges north of Yale had been washed out by the high water and throughout the following weeks nearly every bridge on the old Cariboo Wagon Road would succumb to the water. The Alexandra Suspension Bridge, built in 1864, partially collapsed, but did not wash out. It remained broken, dangling over the canyon until a new steel and concrete bridge was constructed there for the highway in 1926. Closer to Hope, those living at Katz Landing and Union Bar vacated their homes and headed for higher ground until the water receded. The Fraser peaked at Hope on June 9, 1894 with an estimated discharge of 16,990 cubic metres per second. Just over 50 years later, in 1948, the Fraser Valley was hit by what has become known as “the most disastrous flood.” While the flood waters did not reach quite the same heights as in 1894,

because of the increase in population and development on the floodplain, the damage and impact on communities was greater. While the town of Hope escaped the flood and remained largely “high and dry,” nearby areas including Flood and Laidlaw were not so lucky. On Croft Island, several cabins belonging to Croft Island Resort had to be anchored to nearby trees to keep them on the property. Fourteen families from Herrling Island were evacuated, and 35 families from Laidlaw were forced to take themselves and their livestock, including cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens, to higher ground at the Restmore Lodge, just west of Hunter Creek. Cliff Murphy, who had just turned eight years old, recalls his older brothers leaving for work at 6 a.m. and discovering water starting to “trickle through the field and come across the road” so they “went around honking the horn to notify

everybody that the river was coming over” and by 8 a.m. the river had come right through and was filling up the Murphy’s back field. When the flood waters receded and the Murphy’s returned home they were greeted with “sand and mud all over the place... and of course mosquitoes like you wouldn’t believe!” In Laidlaw over 1,000 acres of farmland were submerged but, as Virginia Nash recalls, within the town of Hope “the mouth of the Coquihalla could have been flooded but hardly anybody lived there” so no homes were affected. All in all, the 1948 flood waters reached an all-time recorded high of 10.973 meters with a discharge of 15,200 cubic metres per second on May 31, 1948. In 1972, the Fraser River again experienced record flood waters – the second highest in recorded times with a discharge of 12,900 cubic metres per second and a maximum height of 10.141 meters at Hope on June 16. Wardle Street and part of Seventh Avenue were submerged, and on Tom Berry Road 10 houses were flooded and families were forced to evacuate their properties. Pumps were brought in to remove water and residents were able to return home after approximately a week. Despite being surrounded on three sides by water, Hope has repeatedly escaped the massive battering that Fraser River floods have wrought on the rest of the Fraser Valley.

Go to the site and search for Asdal in the search area at the top right. So far, he’s been making daily updates, including day 25, where he met a man dressed as a knight, riding a

horse across Canada. Asdal plans to tent mostly, so he’s hauling about 30 kilograms of gear. Meanwhile, his wife Sheila gets to stay home and sleep in a nice warm bed every night. She’s not crazy. “He phoned last night,” said Sheila on Monday. “He was in Pipestone, Manitoba, on Friday and he’s hoping to be in Winnipeg to-

day or Tuesday.” If he keeps pedaling, Asdal should be well past the longitudinal center of the country, come Canada Day. “He’s pretty much on schedule,” Sheila added. “He lost one day, due to a washout near Nelson. He’s taken the Crow’s Nest route. He had a lot of rain in B.C. but it was a little better

They said the chain would be fine for a while yet — but he had to replace his rear tire. It was absolutely smooth.” With a new tire installed, he ran over a staple a few days later and needed another repair.

Story Time in the Park writing contest Story Time in the Park will be running its summer writing contest this year from July 3 to Aug. 11. Writing kits can be picked up from the libraries in Hope and Agassiz, and at Family Place in Boston Bar. Everyone in the Fraser-Cascade region is welcome to submit their own stories for children. The writing contest winner will see their book published and distributed to children attending Story Time in the Park next year. Last year’s winners Michelle Pelletier and Tracy Bonshor will be sharing their creativity on July 11 and August 29 in Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. Story Time in the Park is a free family literacy program that kicks off on July 3 in Memorial park. Each family receives the book of the week and can read along as a community member reads out loud to the group.

Summer concert series returns Kerrie-Ann Schoenit Hope Standard

The sixth annual Concerts in the Park series kicks off on Canada Day. “It’s a little bigger and a little better this year. We have a concert every Sunday,” said Diane Ferguson, with the Hope & District Arts Council. “I think it gives community members the opportunity to get out and participate in a social event. It’s accessible to everybody and they get to listen to performers they most likely wouldn’t hear.” Gerald Charlie & The Black Owl Blues Band are the first act to take the stage. Since forming, they have recorded two award-winning albums. Real Blues won best blues debut recording and best No.1 release in Canada in 1999. Out There made the real blues top 100 list from 2006-2009. A career highlight for Charlie was performing as the opening act for Bo Gerald Charlie & The Black Owl Blues Band will Didley. Happy 145th Birthday, Canada. Sunday will be the day of celebration and the action will be happening right in the centre of town. The Strongman Competition will be taking place along with the Classic Car Show. So come on out and bring your camera. This is also a great time to put a video project together. In fact you can do both at the same time. Some cameras will let you shoot in stills or video at the press of a button. Classic cars offer a fantastic opportunity for some very dramatic pictures. Photographing the reflections on chrome is a different way to view the world around you. You can use rear view mirrors to setup a composition in the background with a cooperative friend. Try using fill flash when you photograph the engines, especially if the engine hood is creating too much shadow. Some of the car owners may use mirrors that will reflect the under carriage, showing all the detailed work that has gone into their restoration. There will be lots of buffed cars and lots of buffed guys and gals.
