No one has had anything positive to say about a proposed radio tower to be erected in the middle of the Sooke town centre. Alcatel-Lucent, an adjunct of Wind Mobile, is looking to lease land along Sooke Road for the tower. Opposition is mounting and residents have sent letters and emails to the District of Sooke municipal office decrying the tower because of health concerns. The building of such communications towers is a federal responsibility and not a local one. It is regulated and controlled by Industry Canada. Gerard LeBlanc, municipal planner, stated that the federal government is not subject to local zoning bylaws or the Official Community Plan. “We are not 100 per cent clear on whether use would be imposed,” said LeBlanc. “I haven’t heard anyone with anything positive to say,” said Mayor Wendal Milne. “They come into the community and suggest they can do this is beyond me, it’s quite objectionable really.” Any such construction would have to go through a public consultation process and council is set on sending a strongly-worded letter to the applicant to look for another suitable location for the tower. Councillor Rick Kasper

said “everyone is against it and people said to get it out of town.” Coun. Maja Tait said she thought this was a joke. She said Sooke itself wouldn’t even benefit from it. Many of the residents who sent in letters in opposition to the tower cited health concerns from the electromagnetic radiation. Some studies have shown short term effects from cell tower radiation include headaches, sleep disorders, poor memory, confusion, increased cancer risk, anxiety and other disorders. Alcartel-Lucent states that they rely on Health Canada Safety Code 6 Standards. Many cities and countries have prohibited cell phone base stations and antennas near school due to safety concerns. The proposed tower would be located at 6631 Sooke Road. One resident came forward at the Committee of the Whole portion of the meeting to state that Alcartel-Lucent should look at doubling up with a telephone company that is building a communications tower at the Otter Point business park. Industry Canada require carriers to co-locate with each other wherever they can to reduce the number of towers in any given community. In ending, Mayor Milne said, “If we don’t put up a big fight, the first thing you know they’re starting to build it.”

Cougar hounds in demand as big cats sighted
NEWS • A5

Sharron Ho Sooke News Mirror
The success of tracking a cougar relies heavily on one factor: a skilled cougar hound. Sooke resident, George Pednault, 70, has been tracking cougars since he was 13 years old. Successfully tracking and treeing approximately 300 cougars over several years, Pednault said a good cougar hound is key. He said any dog that will bark and follow a scent will make an adequate cougar hound, but listed walker hounds, blood hounds, bluetick, red bone, and black and tan coonhounds as the most common breeds. Dogs used to track the large predatory cats are trained, but he said it’s mainly instinct. “It’s bred in them a bit... to chase cats,” Pednault said. As puppies, the dogs are trained to follow the scent of racoons in order to teach them to trail. “Then you put them on a cougar track and away they go,” he said. “If you know your animals you certainly can help them, but a good dog doesn’t need too much help.” A trained dog will let out long, drawn out barks called a “ball” while it tracks a cougar trail through the bush, allowing the cougar hunter to follow. The barks will become shorter and more rapid as the dog approaches and trees a cougar. According to Pednault, it doesn’t take long for a cougar to scamper up a tree.
File photo
A treed cougar spotted in East Sooke last year. “A cougar can only go about 1,000 feet flat out and he’s absolutely winded. He’s only good for that little short burst and he trees,” he said, adding a startled or fullbellied cougar will tree even faster. There are various environmental factors that may affect the success of tracking a cougar, including torrential rain, high temperatures, and how soon after the sighting the cougar is tracked. But a steady dog can usually get the job done. “If your dog is good, anytime is prime time,” Pednault said. “The successful rate is pretty good.” “A good dog will track underneath those leaves and even if it’s been snowed on, they’ll follow the track under the snow. I’ve seen them bury their heads and up over their shoul-
ders in snow.” According to conservation officer, Rick Dekelver, cougar hounds are usually contracted if a situation deems it necessary -- a threat to public safety being the main con-
none on Vancouver Island. Since April, the conservation service have received about 104 calls regarding cougar encounters and sightings in areas ranging from Mill Bay to Port R e n frew.
‘A cougar can only go about 1,000 feet flat out and he’s absolutely winded.’
--George Pednault Cougar tracker
cern. “Basically each CO has contacts for contractors for each district or zone.” He said in the past there have been conservation officers in the province who have raised and trained their own cougar hounds, but there are currently
Dekelver stated 40 to 50 per cent of the calls were in the Sooke and East Sooke region. Three of those calls were engaged, resulting in the termination of two cougars that were seen behaving abnormally in East Sooke earlier this month. The two cougars
were seen resting on a property, exhibiting distemper symptoms like difficulty walking. A resident worried for her cat that was laying on the porch a short six-feet from the cougars, broke a broom stick against the wall to frighten the cougars, but they did not respond. Dekelver said the cougars were put down due to their poor health and lack of fear of humans. In recent months, two reports of cougar attacks on dogs have been reported to the media. On June 12, a dog was attacked and killed in East Sooke. The resident let her dogs out of her home, and shortly afterwards heard one of her dogs scream. She saw a cougar rush off into the bush, while her dog laid in the grass bleeding. The dog succumbed to it’s injuries the following morning while in veterinary care. On February 5, a small dog was attacked and killed by a cougar while walking off leash in East Sooke Regional Park. “The messaging we’re getting out is: keep your animals on a leash,” Dekelver said. “It’s nice to let the dog off the leash and run but it increases the threat of conflict.” He added small and medium-sized domestic pets are prey for cougars, as they resemble other food sources like racoons and small game. There are approximately 800 to 1,000 cougars evenly distributed throughout Vancouver Island.

Help your visitors travel worry-free. With the summer vacation season drawing near, some of us will be hosting family and friends from abroad and looking to make their stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. There are a number of things you can do to take good care of your guests, like ensuring they are properly covered in case they need medical attention during their visit. Before they arrive, discuss the importance of having travel insurance protection for the duration of their stay. Medical expenses for nonBritish Columbian residents are not covered by the provincial government. If your visitors arrive with no travel insurance protection, BCAA’s Visitors to Canada Travel Insurance coverage can provide up to $300,000 in emergency medical protection. BCAA’s Visitors to Canada Travel Insurance offers coverage for items such as hospital expenses and prescription drugs, as well as other options like trip cancellation insurance. In addition, coverage is worldwide (except in the visitor’s home country), as long as the majority of their time is spent visiting in Canada.

BCAA’s Visitors to Canada Travel Insurance can be purchased for visitors coming to Canada on a Super Visa, to meet the application requirement. It pays to do your research and seek out the right travel insurance policy. Nonresident health coverage rates vary by province, type of treatment and the patient’s condition, but in general, a daily hospitalization rate can be quite costly. Call or visit your nearest BCAA location to learn more about how BCAA Visitors to Canada Travel Insurance can help protect your guests from costly medical expenses, or go to bcaa.com/visitors to learn more. C.O.P.S. are the unseen ‘eyes’ Sharron Ho Sooke News Mirror
A band of volunteers, armed with equipment like night vision binoculars and software to scan for stolen vehicles, covertly patrol the Sooke region to help deter crime. The Citizens on Patrol Sooke currently has 20 members who act as additional ‘eyes and ears’ for local RCMP. In one evening, the COPS will travel 50 to 60 km by car a night, carefully monitoring school yards, locked facilities, parking lots, business properties and areas noted to have high crime rates. They also perform stationery and on foot surveillance, and act as traffic controllers when required. The COPS do not have jurisdiction to enforce the law, but report situations that
warrant police attention to RCMP officers on duty. John Armitage, COPS president, said most evenings are fairly quiet. “Some people might even say it’s boring, but not seeing anything is pretty good,” he said. “It means everything is okay.” He stated the COPS do not want to be police officers -- they simply want to help make Sooke a safer place to live. “We’re not cops and we’re not vigilantes or anything of that nature. We’re simply additional observers for the police.” Their dedication is clear. Armitage and his COPS colleague, Gunter Rieper, both stated that even without the $20 gas vouchers issued per shift, they would still do the job on their own dime. Over the years, Armit-
age and Rieper have seen many quiet nights, but have also seen their position as patrollers prevent situations that could’ve ended up for the worse. Armitage said one night on duty, he encountered a senior man walking around on a late and stormy night, clearly lost and disoriented. “(We) got him home safe and sound,” he said. Staff Sgt. Steve Wright commended their work and assistance to the RCMP. “They’re a great dedicated group of volunteers, who go out on their own time without any funding from us to assist us, which is marvellous,” he said. “When we have an area that’s experiencing a high crime rate for theft or vandalism, they do patrols and stationary surveillance for us at those locations,”
Wright said. “And again, a great assistance because they’re acting as the eyes and ears for us.” Another component of the volunteer program is Speed Watch. Using industrial-sized signs that detect speeds of oncoming vehicles, Speed Watch monitors traffic areas like school zones for the purposes of public education. The COPS work in units of two on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Shifts are, on occasion, extended depending on the need and there is usually one patrol unit per night. Armitage said the COPS are always looking for more volunteers. To join, interested parties can contact the Sooke RCMP detachment at 250-642-5241. Volunteers can opt to be a member of Speed Watch, COPS or both.

Save a little green for us Council is not wasting any time on debating whether a cellular tower should be located in the heart of Sooke. With scores of letters and emails containing all of the health concerns associated with these types of towers, council took a stand and has said, ’no, not here.’ It doesn’t matter whether it was the petition with close to 600 signatures or the impassioned delegations who came before council, it does not sit well with mayor and council, and apparently many residents. Green space We have to commend for taking a stand in the middle council and fighting for what is best of Sooke is for all of the residents of Sooke. It is refreshing to have a treasured a council that listens to the thing... concerns. Other residents have started a petition for a horseshoe pitch, or rather about 12 of them, at John Phillips Memorial Park. But their petition was not as informative. They just asked people if they wanted to play horseshoes and about 113 said they did. The park is meant for everyone to use but it is not meant to be for any private group’s exclusive use. If we can get more people enjoying the park, great, but it should be for everyone. The problem of deciding who gets in and who doesn’t will become a thorny issue for council to deal with. Council needs to decide what the future of that park is. Green space in the middle of Sooke is a treasured thing and it shouldn’t be given out piecemeal to whoever asks. Sometimes just plain old non-improved spaces satisfy our needs. Let’s think this through because once it is gone it cannot be replaced and we need some spaces left untouched.

B.C. Views
The B.C. NDP government-inwaiting continues to demand an “action plan” on poverty, with annual goals. All the progressive provinces have one, which I guess is why poverty is all but eradicated in enlightened places like Manitoba. There are signs of the reality behind this political smokescreen. Here’s one. For what may be the first time in history, we now have a North American society where one of the most reliable indicators of poverty is obesity. This often gets explained away with a popular theory that poor people are somehow forced to eat fast food and drink pop because they can’t afford healthy food. People who advance this theory presumably don’t do much grocery shopping. There are plenty of processed, sugary, fat-laden choices at the supermarket too. But there is also whole wheat bread, rice and fresh or frozen vegetables that are as cheap as anywhere in the world. Given basic cooking skills and some effort, it’s easy to demonstrate which diet is cheaper as well as healthier. Most immigrants know this. Which diet you choose isn’t a function of money, but rather one of education and self-discipline. There is genuine poverty in our society. One of the things that’s needed is a useful way to define it. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Saying ‘no’ to cellphone towers Approximately one year ago, this cell phone outfit approached me at my business, (2075 Anna Marie Road) trying to convince me to allow them to install a cell phone tower on my property. If memory serves, they required a 15 year lease, with 10 year renewals and a rental rate of approximately $600 per month. They were very pushy and scoffed at my concerns regarding the health effects a structure like this brings to bear on people. I did some research and consulted with Katharina Gustavs, an expert in the field of electromagnetic and microwave radiation etc. and the effects these waves have on the human body. Once she told me the basics of what being bathed in these waves can do to people, in particular to children and young people, I had my answer for this cell phone company. I told them to get stuffed. Politely, of course. That someone is actually entertaining the thought of allowing this company to install such a hazardous structure on their property, in the heart of Sooke and within range of all the kids at Sooke Elementary, not to mention all the people
LETTERS who both live and work downtown, is mercenary to the extreme. Putting people’s health at risk for an easy buck is not only irresponsible, I feel it borders on criminality. Sooke Mountain Cycle is located within 120 meters of the proposed site, and I had not been notified that public consultation would be occurring. I only just now read about it in the paper, and if I had known previously that this topic, which would affect me as a property and business owner, and a as person who cares about his community and environment, I most certainly would have taken the opportunity to voice my opposition to this poorly conceived idea. Working together for sustainable future The Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development is over and many diverse interest groups have described the 53-page draft outcome document titled “The Future We Want” as “283 paragraphs of fluff.” In reviewing the document and various commentaries, it became evident to me
that the conference was another attempt to address complex global issues, that affect us all, by nations and nongovernmental organizations negotiating from the perspectives of their own narrow self-interests. As such, the outcome was seriously compromised as various groups and nations, particularly the United States and Canada, worked hard to weaken the language of the document in order to protect corporate interests. Although there will continue to be some uneven progress in the years to come, social decline, economic inequities and environmental degradation will continue to worsen for the foreseeable future. However, our region like other communities around the world, can achieve sustainable development at our local level creating a resilient, prosperous and sustainable region that will at least be able to better adapt to and mitigate to some degree, the inevitable negative effects of our global meltdown. To accomplish sustainable development will require first and foremost a real understanding that we are all in this together; that our individual choices and actions affect both our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of our community; that inte-
gral to the rights, freedoms and social welfare we enjoy is our social responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our community. Through consultation, cooperation, applying ethical principles and holistically addressing all the dimensions of sustainability together we can be successful both individually and collectively. The essential leadership necessary to take on this challenging task can be provided by the Sooke Economic Development Commission. The terms of reference of this commission are currently under review. Hopefully, it can expand its mandate to become the Sustainable Development Commission and proactively lead our community and our region to a more sustainable future. Don Brown Sooke
Stop dumping in Shirley I am writing this letter in regards to the ongoing and illegal dumping of garden refuse, roofing materials, house clutter, and garbage in the Shirley/ Jordan River areas. It is frustrating, to say the least, that this is happening with no clear end in sight. The good news is that there are
concerned citizens who have no problem going through the garbage to locate an address or name of the offending party. It must be total ignorance and small IQs that lead people to illegally dump their trash. In most cases the trash can be composted, recycled, or sold for profit. To the people from Sooke who I observed dumping your landscaping waste on an access road at Blueberry flats, I did take down your licence plate and make and model of your truck. Please clean up your waste or I will send this info to CRD. Thank you. Donovan Ray Shirley Fire Chief Shirley

Mail thieves take advantage of opportunities mending charges of possession of stolen property and fraud. Although police are not investigating when the letters were stolen, Jantzen said rural mail boxes do get attacked from time to time. A Sooke woman is warning people to be careful with their mail after two cheques she sent out were stolen for attempted fraud. On Sunday, June 17, Evelyn Petrie, 67, mailed out three envelopes, two containing cheques, at the Canada Post street letter box in front of Peoples Drug Mart. The mail was to be picked up on Monday, June 18 at 4:30 p.m. But on the Monday around 9 p.m., she received a call from a financial services company in Victoria, stating
cheques belonging to her name were altered and were attempted to be cashed. One was altered from $20 to $1,800, the ink was allegedly “erased” and payee name changed. The numbers on the altered cheques matched those she sent out. “They had erased the name of the person and the amount and tried to cash it to themselves,” Petrie said. It is unknown whether the letters were intercepted from the street letter box, in transit or upon delivery. Due to the short timeframe of the theft, Petrie
suspects the envelopes were removed from the street letter box the day they were deposited. “I thought people in Sooke should be informed in case they mailed things in the same box,” she said. “I really don’t think the mail had been picked up in time to have it go astray in that way.” Saanich Police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said a 23-year-old Sooke woman was arrested after she attempted to cash the altered cheques at the financial services company around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18. Police are recom-

themselves, Canada Post advises people to: • To mail out letters and envelopes the day of mail pick up, and to not leave mail in receptacles over night.
• Pick up mail as soon as possible after its delivered. • To report suspicious activity around mail boxes to police and Canada Post.

STOP HAIR LOSS Dr. C. Hammoud, Ph.D. recommends:
To reduce or stop hair loss for men and women
#77
Super advanced formula #77 Has been used successfully for many years KING SIZE - 2 months supply
All Natural Ingredients
With powerful DHT block, the recognized #1 cause of hair loss. Unique combination of ingredients make it a guaranteed superior product. Helps to rejuvenate your hair for a fuller and thicker appearance. Early prevention of baldness for those that have a family history. Pattern baldness (Androgenic Alopecia) is caused by an oversupply of hormones DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). It damages hair follicles over time unless preventive action is taken. #77 feeds the roots of the hair by supplying them with the best hair nutrient ever discovered. Help for people who are on radiation or chemo therapy or taking other drugs that cause hair loss. Read testimonials on the Bell website with names, phone numbers and email addresses: “My hair has stopped falling out...and my hair looks shinier and healthier.”; “After 30 days use I noticed I am losing less hair! My hair now looks fuller and the texture has improved.”; “Hair loss was noticeably reduced with first bottle!”; “After using Bell Stop Hair Loss #77 for 2 weeks my hair was not as thin anymore and at the end of the treatment of 2 months my little bald spot on the back of my head was growing over with little hair. This product helped to restore my youthful look.”
SNORING?
SLEEP APNEA?
As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D. Often snorers also have sleep apnea which causes being tired all day, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (per FDA website). Millions suffer needlessly and can stop their nightly ordeals.

The Sooke Region Museum opened two new exhibits on Sunday, one featuring items for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the upstairs gallery and a maritime exhibit, called the the Ray Vowles Maritime History Gallery on the main level. Vowles, pictured, is an exceptionally dedicated volunteer at the museum and has been for many, many years.
To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 #23 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bed and have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully without gasping for air. A blessing. Suzie Weigel, 60, Chattanooga, TN No need to make claims. Bell relays 100% truthful user’s free speech. No money is paid for it. No questions asked guarantee.

Life-long horseman shares love of animals George Gibson is putting his seven horses to work by offering western-style riding lessons Sharron Ho Sooke News Mirror
The carefree cowboy seen riding horses around Sooke’s beaches, trails and town core is none other then 63-year-old George Gibson. Adorned in a plaid shirt, jeans, ubiquitous cowboy hat and single earring dangling from his right ear, Gibson is a bonafide horseman. The Manitoba native has spent his life working with horses, a predilection grown in his early childhood, where he fashioned his first horse from imagination. “I used to play cowboys. I had guns and I had a stick to ride before I ever rode a horse,” Gibson says. It wasn’t until Gibson was 12 years old and his family moved onto a rural farm in the prairie province that he received his first horse -- an unbroken, headstrong, two-year-old stallion. “He bucked me off more times than I could count because I was just learning to ride,” he says. “I had to break him and I didn’t have a saddle because I couldn’t afford one, and he just

kept bucking me off and I just kept getting back on.” Young and determined, Gibson recalls impatiently jumping onto the horse without a mentor or guidance. The stallion’s obtrusive protest only motivated
Gibson more, and in the end the animal submitted. “In the end I could ride that horse with nothing on him, no bridal, no halter, no nothing.” From there, Gibson’s love for horses bur-
geoned and much of the work he has done has involved the animals in one form or another: from guiding hunts and nature walks on horseback through the ridges of the Chilcotin mountains to teaching pack horse guiding

lessons and working with sled dogs in northern B.C. and the North West Territories. “Since we moved to the farm, I’ve been around animals most of the time,” Gibson calmly states. But work is bal-
Congratulations to Emilia Siri for being nominated as this week’s SEAPARC Star. Emilia has just graduated from SEAPARC’s Doodle Bugs Preschool, Class of 2012. She said that she loved being in preschool and told us that she had fun playing with her friends and that the teachers were all very nice. Emilia has taken swimming lessons and gymnastics in the past and is now signed up for dance lessons at the Sooke Dance Studio. She told us that she would like to learn how to speak Italian and French and also wants to take piano lessons someday. She is excited about coming to our British Soccer Camp this summer. She loves visiting her Grandma in Campbell River; adding that she helps her out by walking her dogs Hank & Harley and loves playing with all the toys that Grandma has at her house. Emilia’s Nona and Nono are coming to visit this year from Savona, Italy and she can hardly wait to see them; she is looking forward to going to the airport with her Dad to pick them up. Emilia said that she is very good at making homemade pizza with her Dad. She helps out at home by cleaning her room and helping Mom with chores. When she grows up; she would like to be a Ballerina and a Singer. We think you will be great at anything you ever do Emilia, thank you for being our SEAPARC Star of the Week, you are amazing!
anced with play, as he and his partner, Adrian Moncur, 54, take off for summers at a time and travel throughout cities, mountains, and country-sides on horseback. Throughout his lifetime, Gibson has
learned one thing when working with animals -approach with love, not abuse. “My dad was really hard on animals, and he’d take his temper out on them, but I learned that’s not the way to handle animals,” he says. “You get more done with love than you do being cruel.” Now living in Sooke for the past 30 years, coming and going, Gibson owns two foals and seven horses. Gibson, his nine horses and Moncur, live on a 30-acre property along the 6000-block of West Coast Road. The cost of owning nine horses doesn’t come cheap, and as a response, Gibson has the animals working so they can, “Earn their own keep a little bit.” He currently runs a horseback riding business called Horse’N Around BC, and holds western-style riding lessons and trail rides throughout Sooke, in areas of his client’s choice. “I give lessons and take people for trail rides or anywhere they want to go,” Gibson says. Local youth to hit open waters Mobile Optimist Sailing School coming to Sooke from July 9-13 Sharron Ho Sooke News Mirror
Local children interested in setting sail and kayaking in Sooke’s open waters will now get the chance with the Mobile Optimist Sailing School. The sailing school, organized through Sailing BC with certification from the Canadian Yachting Association, will take place in Sooke from July 9-13. Lessons will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, inside and at the dock behind Mariner’s Village. “The purpose of this program is to build a legacy of youth sailing programs in communities that don’t already have access to them,” said Candice Suchocki Weir, MOSS program facilitator. Weir decided to contact Sailing BC and facilitate the program, after she learned Sooke did not have an on-water program for youth.
“If you’re a child in Sooke, your option would be to drive into Victoria if you were interested in learning to sail,” she said. “I grew up sailing, I coached sailing professionally for years and it just shocks me there was no program in Sooke. I just think it’s such a great community for it.” The program has an emphasis on how to be safe and have fun on the water, which Weir said is of utmost importance for children living in coastal communities like Sooke. Kids will learn all the basics like: how to determine the strength and direction of wind; steering, manoeuvring and balancing a boat; proper parts of a boat; leaving and returning to the dock; and different points of sail. A majority of the lessons will be facilitated through hands-on activities and on the water, namely the Sooke
basin. Seven-foot Optimist sailboats and twoperson kayaks will be used. By the end, participants will be able to sail and kayak safely on their own. The program is geared towards children between the ages of 6-14. Due to the potential age gap between participants, learning outcomes are determined by age, capability and ability. “They are in the same boat, doing basically the same thing, but the objectives at the end of the day might be a little bit different,” Weir said. The MOSS is held throughout dozens of communities in the Yukon and B.C., and costs $250 for the week. Children unable to bear the total cost of registration, can apply for KidSport bursaries. The fee includes coaching costs, equipment, a work book and t-shirt. Funds left over after
expenses from running the program will go back to the community, if there is a desire to build a sailing school. The registration deadline is Friday, June 29. To register and find out more information,

66-year-old ball park gets revitalized through community initiatives Sharron Ho Sooke News Mirror
The Sooke Minor Fastball Association has been hard at work to revamp Art Morris Park for the girls’ U19C Provincial Championship from July 6-8. According to Sandra Nelson, Sooke Minor Fastball Association president, the Provincial serves as an opportunity to promote the local fastball scene and the region itself. “We want them -when they leave here -to say ‘Wow, Sooke put on a great Provincial,’” she said. “ We’re a small community, and the only way that word gets out about us is through people visiting us.” Nelson said there will be 16 teams from around the province participating, including one of the Sooke U19 C teams, which received a hosting buy-in. It is expected about 500 people from out-oftown will be in the area during the Provincial. In an effort to promote the region, the Sooke Minor Fastball Association has supplied each coach and player with a program highlighting the region’s amenities. The program will talk about our community and sites to see in our community, she said. In order to provide the visitors with a memorable experience, Art Morris Park, which was founded in 1946, is receiving a make-over. The association was the recipient of the Island Equipment Owners Association community project grant,
which saw the ball park get a fresh, new look on June 23. The IEOA brought in bobcats, stone slingers, and two single gravel
trucks to put in a new road base, and grade the roads and parking lot surrounding the ball field. The organization also
donated sand, which allowed for a new layer on each of infields of the ball diamonds. Total cost of the work amounted to a value of
$6,000. In addition, the fastball association will be power washing and repainting the bleachers, and fixing the fenc-
ing that skirts around the park. The Sooke Rotary Club supplied $2,000 for fencing repairs. “It’s ongoing, but

Fishing is hot! The weather might not be what we are looking for but the chinook and halibut fishing is. Now that anglers can take a wild chinook, any size, off Sooke fishing for the big ones is in full swing. Which is good news for everyone who benefits from the local fishery. Anglers are getting back to what they do best — catching salmon in all the local hot spots. Crab Shack Charters had good results this past week hooking up guests with nice catches of chinook off Otter Point. ‘Tiger Prawn’ Glen got into some nice action on Sunday landing nine and bringinghome seven chinook in a three-hour fish. Hot combo this week would the Tiger prawn teaser head trolled behind a hot spot flasher. Port Renfrew is on fire — fishing that is. Charter
Sooke Says
operators and sporties are experiencing good fishing in all the hot spots. Logan Creek on the beach is where the hottest action is, fishing in 70 feet of water anywhere from 20 to 50 on the downrigger. Out at the Swiftsure Bank the action is nonstop. Chinook and coho fishing was at its best and drifting for halibut was good as well. Two weeks ago the first annual Port Renfrew derby was held. Des Hatchard wound up taking home first place with a 30-pound tyee; he also took third with a 19-pounder; and Corey Arnett got second with a 28-pounder. Hopefully next year the weather will be better and more anglers will get involved. Until next time... Keep your rod tip up! Kiwi Magic

Arts & Entertainment Local poet gathers poems about elders’ lives Pirjo Raits Sooke News Mirror
She is known as the “poet of the skies,” the instigator of random acts of poetry and the heart behind the Elder Project. Wendy Morton, says she has gotten an education from First Nations people. As the catalyst for the Elder Project, she has listened to the stories shared between elders and the younger generation. Some are joyous, others are sad and all are a truth spoken in the form of poetry. Submitted photo
Covers from two of the Elder Project booklets. Right, poet Wendy Morton.
My Elder, Dan Norris I grew up around wood stoves and sawdust stoves. We had a small house, 18 people, no running water. There were roses outside, a smokehouse for drying fish. We made sure our chores were done first, then we could go play. We had to eat at the table because the Elders were talking, teaching us. We swallowed their knowledge.
Kali Jack and Tyson Jack From an interview with Danny Norris It all began while Morton was on a flight and her seatmate Barb Stoochnoff, a teacher at Chemainus secondary school, began talking. Morton said she was a poet and wanted to turn students into poets. That’s how it all began. She met Denise Augustine, the coordinator for Aboriginal education, who shared
her vision of a book of poems created by the students from the stories told by their elders. Enter Kim Fenner at Coast Capital Savings and a corporate donation to the project. Coast Capital Savings and the Toronto Dominion Bank were instrumental in making the ongoing project possible. “It was really generous of them,” said Morton. This project expanded to include First Nations stu-
dents across the province, resulting in half a dozen booklets with First Nations art on the covers and in the pages, along with photos and of course, the poems. “They are songs of hope,” said Morton. “Generally even the darkest ones are hopeful.” Many of the poems are the result of stories which had not been told, perhaps because of the shame attached or the need to forget, said Morton.
“One of the things I can do as a poet is train these kids,” she said. “This whole thing is about engendering pride. Once they have that they can do just about anything.” Some of the First Nations kids she works with are struggling to find themselves. She said that if these kids can get out of the traps which keep them from being whole people, the world is open to them. “They are accomplished, smart and capable, they have a resourcefulness I
wish I had.” The closeness and pride shared by the kids and the elders is evident, especially at the launch of each of the books. This makes Morton very proud and very humble. “I have a skill set to pass on and it seems to me that it is going to be my path.” Morton would love to produce a book for the First Nations kids in Sooke as well as in Port Renfrew. But it is dependent on a sponsor from a school and a corporate sponsor. “I want to keep doing this as long as I can keep doing it, I have the energy and the capability.” Morton is the recipient of a number of awards for her poetry, including the inaugural Spirit Bear Prize, Golden Beret Award and most recently the Colleeen Thibaudeau Outstanding Contribution Award. She has written four books of poetry and one memoir. Morton lives along the shore in Otter Point and nurtures beautiful gardens and poetry.
Songs of the heart with David Sinclair and Kent Fiddy For our final concert of the season on Saturday, June 30, the Sooke Folk Music Society had a change of plans and is now proud to present David Sinclair and his special guest Kent Fiddy. Scholarship award presented to EMCS student The Community Prevention Education Continuum (CPEC), now Healthy Choices Inspire Youth (HCIY), initiated a $500 scholarship, that partly came from 2011 Community Grant Program under the District of Sooke. The award will go towards the continuing education of
a Edward Milne community school student who qualified under Community Drug Prevention Scholarship Award. This is the first Drug Free Scholarship Award given to an EMCS grad. On Sunday, June 10, the president of the former CPEC, Ted Dever and the present presi-
dent of Healthy Choices Inspires Youth Society, Les Haddad, presented the award and the scholarship cheque to Lillian Stearns-Smith at the grad ceremony at SEAPARC. “We at HCIY continue to work with youth and adults to inspire youth to make Healthy Choices, especially
this month during grad. We had over100 signed pledges on our Stay Dry for the month of June to support the Dry Grad initiative. These pledges will be posted at EMCS to show the community support,” said Ellen Lewers.

The Pastor's Pen A popular hobby of late is scrapbooking. Individuals pass many pleasant hours sorting and organizing thousands of photos taken over the spread of many years. Once they are arranged and cut to size, they are formatted into scrapbooks, often as gifts for grown children or grandchildren. As such, these scrapbooks outline a family's history and also remind them of the many wonderful things that have happened over the years. Remembering what God has done in our lives is important, especially when life starts to heat up. When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and freed them from slavery, there was great rejoicing over God's miracles on their behalf. All their years of praying and persevering had Âżnally been recognized. They were free; a new life lay before them. And yet, as soon as life's experiences started heating up again, they tossed God's greatness to the wind and rebelled against Him. Like spoiled children, they failed to be patient and await God's timing in their lives. They failed to make the right choice, the choice to trust that amidst the heat of life, God was at work for their good. Psalm 106 verse 7 says, " When our fathers were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea." That same Psalm begins with the reminder, " Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." Keeping a cool head when life is hot requires remembering and choosing. It requires choosing to trust that the Lord is good all the time and that "His love endures forever." It requires remembering all the miracles He has already done and not tossing them to the wind but allowing them to blow through our minds as a cool and refreshing breeze of comfort and hope amidst the heat.
